Lake Nakuru National Park safari | Travel guide

Lake Nakuru is one of the Rift Valley lakes at an elevation of 1,754 m above sea level. It lies to the south of Nakuru, in the rift valley of Kenya and is protected by Lake Nakuru National Park, one of the best national parks in Kenya.

The lake’s abundance of algae used to attract a vast quantity of flamingos that famously lined the shore. The park’s main feature is a large, shallow lake supporting great birdlife, including big flocks of pelicans and variable flocks of flamingos.

The lake was once famous for its flamingos, however, since 2012, conditions have become unfavourable for these birds and most have moved to other Rift Valley lakes.

Lake Nakuru is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the most famous lake in Kenya. With large bushy green sections, not commonly seen in other Kenyan parks such as Masai Mara national reserve.

Why visit Lake Nakuru National Park?

Lake nakuru safari.

There are plenty of great things to do in Kenya and one of the Great Rift Valley’s most famous soda lakes, Lake Nakuru offers visitors the chance to witness one of the world’s most spectacular wildlife sights: brilliant pink flamingos as far as the eye can see.

When conditions are right, between one and two million lesser and greater flamingos feed around the shores of the shallow lake, which together with tens of thousands of other water birds.

Those who have been to Lake Nakuru will attest to the park’s beauty with its rich topography of hills, grasslands and forests. There are several easily attained vantage points from which to enjoy wonderful views of the landscape and especially the lake with its undulating pink population of birdlife.

Though the park is not large in size, a visit to Lake Nakuru will be a very full and colorful safari experience.

Lake Nakuru safaris are excellent. Declared a national park in 1961, Lake Nakuru covers an area of some 180 km² and its diverse habitats are home to warthog, baboon, waterbuck and large numbers of impala.

Slightly shyer residents include buffalo, Rothschild’s giraffe, eland, the occasional leopard and both black and white rhino. A herd of hippo have their territory in the northern part of the lake.

But that’s only the beginning of what this special park has to offer because the wildlife viewing here is easy and accessible. Lake Nakuru is known for hosting some endangered but beautiful species.

You’re sure to see rare Rothschild’s Giraffe along with white rhino, especially along the lakeshore.Another aspect to the active wildlife viewing here is observing the park’s zebra, hippo, olive baboon, vervet and colobus monkeys, waterbuck and hyena.

Other big safari wildlife to be on the lookout for includes lion, cheetah, leopard and buffalo. The park is fenced to protect the rhino and giraffe, so it can’t support elephants – the only large mammal you won’t find here.

safari lake nakuru

Within a species list of around 400 bird species, Lake Nakuru is an ornithologist’s paradise.

The flamingos are also accompanied by other birdlife – pelicans, cormorants, kingfishers, ostriches, storks as well as herons and eagles. The scene here is bountiful, busy and full of colour.

Moving through the park’s dense acacia forest you’ll likely come upon herds of impala and waterbuck. Also, in the woodlands you may see large pythons hanging from the trees. This is the infamous African rock python that’s capable of swallowing animals whole.

Other activities at Lake Nakuru National Park

Here are some other activities which visitors can consider during their African safari in Lake Nakuru:

Short on time? A one-day safari in Kenya’s Lake Nakuru

Kenya Lake Nakura

Two common misconceptions about taking an African safari are that you need to have a lot of money and a lot of time. When I was a broke backpacker, I spent time in Nairobi, Kenya, and found a $100 one-day trip to Lake Nakuru where I was able to enjoy a safari without committing to a multi-day excursion.

For more TPG news delivered each morning to your inbox, sign up for TPG daily newsletter .

If you are stationed in Nairobi and are short on time, Lake Nakuru is a perfect way to spend a day out of the city. On tour day, expect to be picked up before the sun has risen, likely sometime between 4 and 5 a.m. Luckily, Kenya has some of the best coffee in the entire world thanks to its high altitude and ever-high presence of fertile soil.

A driver will meet you in your Nairobi hotel lobby. From there, you will begin your two-and-a-half hour journey from the city journey to Lake Nakuru. Along the way, you'll likely stop for a coffee or a quick bite to fuel up for a long day. You might also stop at a shop where safari-goers can purchase locally crafted souvenirs. I remember seeing a necklace that I wanted badly, but as mentioned, I was traveling on a budget. Oh, the regret you'll have for the things you didn't buy!

Once you arrive to Lake Nakuru, each person must pay an entry fee of $35, but, depending on what type of tour you booked, this fee might already be included in your tour cost. Upon payment, you'll receive your ticket and be granted entry into a world that feels far from anything you've seen before. Tip : Bring a good camera on any African safari. A GoPro or even an iPhone simply won't do the trick.

safari lake nakuru

Be prepared to move slowly and be utterly quiet. The animals don't like to be disturbed, and in Lake Nakuru, animals' needs reign higher than people's needs. Though everyone's experience will be different, you can expect to see gazelle, zebra, monkeys and even some rare rhinos thanks to the on-site sanctuary .

If you keep your eyes peeled, you may also spot lions, leopards, African bush elephants and African buffalo. I was fortunate enough to see black rhinoceros and African buffalo on my one day in Lake Nakuru, further proving that you don't need a lot of time and/or money to enjoy a proper African safari.

Lake Nakuru is particularly known for its excessive flamingo population , which is what drew me to book this day-trip in the first place. However, as we pulled up to the actual lake, I was astounded to see there were hardly any flamingos at all.

Climate change has caused the water to dramatically flood over the past several years, making the flamingo population at the shore sparse. Don't let those Google images fool you: It's unlikely you will see the flocks of flamingos Lake Nakuru is so famous for.

As you drive past the lake and circle back toward the exit, be prepared to see giraffes slowly grazing and crossing the pathways. Watching these majestic creatures in their natural habitat will make you wonder how big-game hunters have the heart to do what they do.

As you finally exit Lake Nakuru, your tour guide will likely offer you an option to stop at Lake Naivasha on the ride back to Nairobi, where you can take a boat safari to see hippos and more birds. If you're too tired or decide to opt out, you can instead stop for a traditional Kenyan meal of ugali and samaki. Don't forget to try the local beer, Tusker.

While this one-day African safari means an early morning and a packed travel schedule, it's a perfect option for those who are short on time, finances, or both when traveling through Kenya. Flights from New York - John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) to Nairobi start at 44,000 miles + $5.60 with United MileagePlus.

Lake Nakuru safari guide

Cormorants in lone tree, at Lake Nakuru National Park

The dazzlingly pink Lake Nakuru is one of the best places to be if you’ve never been on an African safari before.

Well, not actually in the flamingo-filled lake, as it’s home to dangerous animals like Nile crocodiles and hippos. But in Lake Nakuru National Park , an idyllic safari destination in the heart of Kenya.

It’s convenient, charming, and completely packed with wildlife. Here’s a concise Lake Nakuru safari guide to get you ready for an adventure in this beautiful wilderness.

What Makes Lake Nakuru Special?

White rhino grazing in Lake Nakuru National Park

Lake Nakuru is the most iconic ‘big-four’ national park in the whole of East Africa. Four of the famous five can be found here in relative abundance – lions, buffalo , rhinos and leopards .

In fact, it’s one of very few East African national parks where most of these famous animals can be seen in one place. Ngorongoro Crater Conservation Area is also home to rhinos but it’s very difficult to see leopards. Parks like the Serengeti and Masai Mara don’t offer rhino encounters (even if they claim to), but a wonderful specialism ( the great wildebeest migration ).

You can definitely see the big five in private conservancies, especially those on the Laikipia Plateau. However, conservancies are exclusive and expensive, whereas Lake Nakuru National Park is very affordable .

But forget the big five. Lake Nakuru is simply spectacular. Flamingos fill the lake,  rhinos drink from the waterside, predators lurk on the plains and you can enjoy a best-of-African-style safari in a single morning.

Lake Nakuru is special because it’s one of very few national parks where a wide variety of big mammals can be encountered in a small space. And for that, it’s absolutely perfect for a first-time safari adventure.

Why Lake Nakuru Isn’t the Best Park in East Africa

Tourists surrounded by large flocks of flamingo, Lake Nakuru

Many of East Africa’s wildernesses are unfenced and contiguous, i.e. they border each other. For example in Tanzania, Tarangire borders Ngorongoro which borders the Serengeti, so animals can move freely between different parks.

Lake Nakuru is standalone and fenced . Animals cannot move beyond the national park, nor can migratory mammals swell the park’s population. Flamingos migrate to the park from November to May, but of course they can fly, so they aren’t restricted by fences.

This is a small national park and you can explore most of Lake Nakuru on a single game drive. While that’s great for first impressions of famous animals, the park lacks a little in wilderness feeling, especially because it borders the bustling town of Nakuru.

A small park can’t support huge numbers of wildlife because there simply isn’t enough space or food for too many animals. Lake Nakuru National Park covers 188 square kilometres. Serengeti National Park is 14,750 square kilometres! That’s more than 78 times bigger!

As such, Lake Nakuru is great for a first-time safari . If you’ve never seen wild animals before, this national park can cover a lot in a short time. Safari connoisseurs will probably want to look elsewhere, to wilder parks with greater scale and subtlety.

Planning a Lake Nakuru National Park Safari

Kenya itinerary planning

With its location in the Central Rift Valley, Lake Nakuru is a convenient inclusion on most Kenya itineraries.

The national park is three hours northwest of Nairobi . Using the same road it’s only two hours from Aberdares National Park and Lake Naivasha .

From Lake Nakuru you can reach the Laikipia Plateau and Mount Kenya within four hour, so it’s easy to combine Central Kenya’s best destinations into a single tour.

Do note that Kenya’s wildest national parks are not in central Kenya . Samburu , Masai Mara and Tsavo are on the country’s outer boundaries. So a Lake Nakuru plus Masai Mara safari will mean either a flight or a 12-hour drive between the parks.

What is the best time of year to visit Lake Nakuru National Park?

Baby lion does not look pleased as its mother wants to carry it away

Lake Nakuru is a year-round destination . The animals can’t migrate out or in, so the same wildlife population exists throughout the year.

The green season is more beautiful, with lush high grass and flowering escarpments. This is usually April to June and October to December. However, high grass makes it harder to see the cats, who can camouflage themselves away.

Dry season months are not as pretty but generally provide a more complete wildlife viewing experience.

How long to spend in Lake Nakuru

Bird's-eye view of Lake Nakuru in Kenya

Lake Nakuru may be small but you can’t do a good safari as a day trip , wherever you are traveling from.

The best time for a Lake Nakuru game drive is in the early morning and late afternoon , when the large animals are most active. But with a day trip you will be traveling to Lake Nakuru during these prime hours, so you will be left with a safari during the hottest part of the day.

Many operators offer day trips from Nairobi, or two-day tours combining Naivasha, Hell’s Gate National Park and Lake Nakuru. It’s just too much in too short a time for a good safari experience.

Honestly, don’t attempt a one-day Lake Nakuru tour from Nairobi. If you only have one day for a safari then it’s far more convenient and comfortable to visit  Nairobi National Park , where you can enjoy game drive at the best times.

For a proper safari it’s recommended to spend at least one night in the vicinity of Lake Nakuru National Park . Then you can take an afternoon game drive, relax and sleep, then take another game drive the following morning.

Anything longer than two days and one night may be too long. In Lake Nakuru National Park you can only explore on daytime game drives, so if you stay longer you can’t get a different perspective by walking or do a nighttime drive (the only exception is the thrilling Lake Nakuru cycling race every September, which raises money for community conservation).

Where to stay for a Lake Nakuru safari

View from a safari camp in Lake Nakuru, Kenya

Do you want to stay inside the national park surrounded by animals? Or do you want to stay outside the fence , away from the wildlife?

Staying inside the national park creates a 24 hours a day safari experience , featuring lion roars, baboon calls, and animals grazing past in the night. It’s a real immersion and you can explore at first light, while everyone else is still driving to the park gate.

Of course you want greater animal encounters! But it costs a lot more and it’s almost impossible to find a room inside the national park for less than USD 200 . Hotels in Nakuru town can be found for less than USD 30.

When booking an organised tour, make sure you know where you will actually stay . Being deep inside the park is worth the extra money versus a night in a town, away from the wildlife you came to see.

If you really want to connect with your wild side, spend the night at a national park campsite . These campsites only have ablution facilities, so you or your tour operator will need to bring tents, sleeping bags, and everything to cook a meal. Camping fees are currently USD 50 per person for non-Kenyans.

One of Lake Nakuru’s highlights is the abundance of public camping sites . They allow visitors to stay deep inside a national park for a relatively low price. All you need is a sense of adventure, because you will probably hear lions and rhinos in the night!

Don’t worry, it’s very safe . After all, many Kenyan tribes have lived alongside these great animals for millennia. Co-existence is very much possible here!

Safari timings and key wildlife locations in Lake Nakuru

Giraffe under a huge acacia tree, Lake Nakuru

Kenya makes it difficult for people to visit Lake Nakuru without a guide. They impose additional conservation fees for self-driving visitors and for good reason. With so many dangerous animals in a small space, you need to know what you’re doing and where you’re going.

So almost everyone visits on a guided safari tour. The most impressive wildlife tends to congregate around the southern end of the lake shore and the forests beneath Flamingo Hill.

Visit these areas early in the morning as you will have a greater chance of spotting leopards and lions prowling the African savanna .

Early morning is also the best time to encounter black rhinos in the open. From mid-morning onward these bashful giants tend to hide away, inside the forest or in high grass.

White rhinos stay in the open for longer, but nobody wants to be roaming beneath the blazing midday sun, so even buffalo may disappear during the middle of the day.

Choosing the best tour operator for Lake Nakuru National Park

White rhino crosses the road in front of tourists, Lake Nakuru

There are hundreds if not thousands of safari tour operators running tours to Lake Nakuru. You can find them online or after you arrive in Kenya.

So how do you know who is good and who to trust?

We believe an African safari should revolve around the wildlife experience , wherever it is in Africa. So when comparing tour operators we recommend asking questions about the wildlife.

Is midday a good time to view wildlife? No, but many tours operate this way.

Where is the best place in Lake Nakuru to see rhinos? We don’t know, but a good local guide can answer this question for you.

Like any tourist industry, Kenya has many outstanding guides and a handful of cowboys. So ask lots of questions about the wildlife experience, rather than focusing on who offers the cheapest tour.

Lake Nakuru can be a stunning safari. It can also be a hot and dreary drive around a landscape where the animals are all hiding from the sun.

It’s in the details you can separate good and average tour operators, so hopefully you will have the safari experience of a lifetime.

If you need assistance Africa Freak has a partnership with a pan-African safari specialist who will connect you to trusted local operators across the continent .

I have visited Nakuru NP for many times but never met the Big Five because of absent elephants (as well as in Nairobi NP). Since when are there settled elephants in this small area?

' src=

Thank you so much for pointing that out, Dr. Dengler. Our mistake!

The area is indeed too small to support elephants. Besides, Nakuru is fenced off to protect rhinos and the endangered Rothschild’s giraffe.

Lake Nakuru National Park

Lake nakuru national park, kenya.

Lake Nakuru National Park is among Kenya safari’s if-you-have-the-time finest attractions, usually a later addition after exploring Kenya’s big safari attractions. This delightful and compact park features vast open plains, rocky escarpments, pockets of acacia forest, and a waterfall surrounding Lake Nakuru on the floor of the Great Rift Valley. Until a few years ago, it was most famous for the countless colorful flamingos that painted the lake’s landscapes and fed on the algae in the shallows. The park is also featured in Sydney Pollack’s 1985 epic romantic drama ‘Out of Africa’, starring Meryl Streep and Robert Redford.

Lake Nakuru National Park is one of the finest attractions on Kenya safari, usually added as a later addition after exploring Kenya’s big safari attractions. This delightful and compact park covers around 73 square miles (188 square km) of rocky escarpments, pockets of acacia forest, and a waterfall surrounding Lake Nakuru on the floor of the Great Rift Valley. Until a few years ago, it was most famous for the countless colorful flamingos that painted the lake’s landscapes and fed on the algae in the shallows.

Although the rising lake levels have caused the water to lose much of its salinity, repelling the swarms of flamingos, some flamingos still wade the lake’s edge, but not as massive as before 2014. Nevertheless, Lake Nakuru is still gorgeous year-round, a very rewarding birding spot, and an easy park to visit.

Lake Nakuru National Park is home to more than 400 bird species and incredible wild game, including leopard (often seen in daylight hours), lions, a relatively high number of black and white rhino, big herds of buffalo, endangered Rothschild’s giraffe, waterbuck, and eland. The park offers a unique game safari drive experience, as many animals are familiar with the presence of tourist vehicles on the small network of roads that encircle the lake, and they may allow visitors to get very close.

The scenery is spectacular too, with the lake surrounded by escarpments covered in thick acacia bush. Visitors should not miss stopping at the viewpoint at Baboon Cliffs for the expansive view down to the lake, but as the name suggests, they should keep an eye out for the mischievous baboons.

Things To Do

The best spot for wildlife viewing game drives is the southern end of Lake Nakuru. The forested area below Flamingo Hill is a favorite lion-spotting point where lionesses love to sleep in the trees. Leopards frequent the same area, and visitors sometimes report spotting them around the Makalia camp .

The rocky “ Out of Africa ” viewpoint is the best vantage point to view the massive expanse of Lake Nakuru National Park. The viewpoint receives less tourist traffic than the lower Baboon Clif. The incline is steeper, but it offers sweeping views over the lake and fond memories of Sydney Pollack’s epic drama Out of Africa starring Meryl Streep and Robert Redford . Some of the movie scenes were shot on location in the park.

Another popular viewpoint and one-time lunch spot are Baboon Cliffs . The viewpoint boasts exceptional views yonder the lake, with some fine aerial vistas onto the flooded lakeshore. Baboons, however, are a nuisance and may raid vehicles for food. Visit in the early morning before they ruin the spot.

The untamed Makalia Falls at the Lake Nakuru National Park’s extreme southern end is worth checking out if you love nature hiking and camping. The falls are at their best during the rains when they swell. You can camp at the nearby park campsite overnight.

Getting There And Around

Lake Nakuru National Park is 166 km (103 miles) northwest of Nairobi, about a 2-3-hour drive along the main A104 road. You can drive around the park in just three hours, and this is one of the few parks you can get around in a standard car (not 4×4). Many taxi drivers in Nakuru town know the park well and can take you around, and for an extra fee, you can hire an expert local Kenya safari guide. A trip to Lake Nakuru with a local safari operator is often combined with a stay at Lake Naivasha or included on a longer safari to the Masai Mara.

Lake Nakuru is good all year round, though the rains might interfere with your vacation during the main Wet season of March, April, and May. However, June to March, where there’s little rain, is the best season for a relaxed vacation around Lake Nakuru. Although there is excellent birdlife at Lake Nakuru, conditions in recent years have become unfriendly for the colorful pink flamingos, which used to be a prime attraction here. As a result, the flamingos have moved to other lakes in the Rift Valley but not entirely.

  • Stunning Rift Valley scenery: Kenya’s most Scenically beautiful national park with a large, shallow lake supporting excellent birdlife, including big flocks of pelicans and variable flocks of flamingos
  • Varied habitats support an excellent range of wildlife, including leopards, lions, black and white rhino, big herds of buffalo, endangered Rothschild’s giraffe, waterbuck, and eland.
  • Easy access between Nairobi, Masai Mara, Samburu, and Mount Kenya

  • Q7660CPemmanuelg 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Separate trips one to Nyahururu & Lalanasi and the other to Amboseli Have had two trips with Joyina Safaris with contrasting experiences but two constants. The April 16th, 2022 trip to Lalanasi & Nyahururu with friends I rate as VERY GOOD. Nice trip, good food, scenic falls, wonderful photographs and awesome fun activities at Lalanasi there was something interesting for everyone whether quad bike riding, horse riding, swimming, boating or fishing. The August 6th, 2022 trip to Amboseli I rate as poor and underwhelming. Think Amboseli and you imagine getting to see Lake Amboseli, getting close up with huge herds of elephants and getting that vaunted picture of the Elephants against the backdrop of Kilimanjaro. Unfortunately those expectations were not met. The truck was not so good as it had a breakdown which wasted previous time and a tough shaky ride and the driver seemed not knowledgeable about the park, at one point pausing for over 20 minutes undecided where to turn. At the end it was like more of a hurry to get out of the park in time and there was little to none opportunity to pause for us to photograph animals. And it was the longest ride back home as the truck seemed to not be pulling well. I'll recommend next time to Joyina Safaris a more knowledgeable/ experience driver for which ever park we are traveling to as they can truly make or break a trip. And if there's a way to have a third party check the road worthiness of the vehicle to be use before embarking. The combination of a Very Good + Poor rating = AVERAGE for now. The two constants I'll mentioned is that Joyina Safaris for both trips were affordably priced and that Joy is one of the nicest tour lady you'll get to meet. She have very good customer relationship and will ensure that everyone in her traveling party are truly comfortable. Read more Written November 1, 2022

The ultimate guide to your next Nakuru Safari

Get to know nakuru.

This small area is your chance to see rhino and big cats as well as pelicans and pink-hued masses of flamingos

Lake Nakuru is a Rift Valley soda lake that’s high in mineral and algae content. It’s a must if you’re interested in seeing feeding flocks of the two species of flamingo, and huge great white and pink-backed pelicans. If you’re not going on safari to Laikipia’s Lewa and Ol Pejeta conservancies, then Lake Nakuru is your chance to see rhino, both black and white. It’s also a good place to see Rothchild’s giraffe, and there are big cats in the form of lion, leopard and cheetah. Any nature or bird lover would enjoy Lake Nakuru even though it’s a relatively small fenced area just outside Nakuru town. The lake was used to create a sanctuary for rhino and other wildlife during the height of the poaching years.

Faqs about lake nakuru national park.

  • The basins of the beautiful lakes Bogoria and Nakuru, which are located on the Eastern Kenyan branch of the Great Rift Valley, were produced by tectonic and volcanic activity.
  • Lake Nakuru is one of the Rift Valley lakes at an elevation of 1,754 m above sea level.
  • The city of Nakuru is located in Kenya's Nakuru County. It is located 1850 meters above sea level in Kenya's highlands, giving it a climate similar to, but slightly colder than, Nairobi.
  • June to October and January to February. The wildebeest migration reaches the Masai Mara in July and remains until October - when they move back to the Serengeti in Tanzania. However, wildlife is easier to spot since the animals gather around the water source as well as on the rivers. Newborn animals can also be seen.

Map showing route of Africa Kenya Safaris 2 day safari tour to Lake Nakuru and Lake Naivasha

  • Lake Nakuru
  • Lake Naivasha
  • Crescent Island

These two Rift Valley lakes show off their own colorful kind of safari experience. Think lots of birdlife and grazing wildlife in the forests and along the shores. An easy drive from Nairobi will transport you to a different sort of pastoral world where you will be able to sail and walk amongst wildlife like zebra, giraffe, rhino, gazelle… and closer than you thought possible.

Our first stop will be Lake Nakuru National Park , a colorful mix of acacia forests, waterfalls, birdlife, and the lake itself. You’ll also find larger game – the special sanctuary here offers opportunities to see both black and white rhinos. You may find giraffes and even lions and leopards have been spotted.

Nearby Lake Naivasha is an equally charming haven with grazing zebra, antelope, and impala gathered along the shore. We’ll view these and others on an easy sailing safari across the lake, floating past the birdlife and hippos.

Nairobi - Lake Nakuru National Park

3 hour drive.

7:30 – Hop onto your 4 x 4 Safari Jeep for the easy ride to Lake Nakuru National Park. Along our route, we’ll take in the farms of the central highlands in the early light and enjoy the dramatic landforms of the Rift Valley escarpment.

Arriving at Lake Nakuru you’re certain to be delighted by the park’s natural beauty – waterfalls, acacia forests, the alkaline lake, and rocky peaks.

The birdlife here is abundant – pelicans, storks, herons, and sometimes you’ll even see bright, dazzling flamingoes, adorning the lakefront.

But we’ll also be looking for lion, leopard, buffalo, and rhino on the plains and in the wooded areas.

Lake Nakuru - Lake Naivasha - Crescent Island

Today is a triple-threat – 3 parks! We’ll take a last game drive through Lake Nakuru on the way to Lake Naivasha. This is another Rift Valley lake, but the wildlife and birds found here are a bit different owing to the lake’s freshwater.

You’ll see hippos bathing in the water on your sailing safari across the lake. While nearby, over on the shore, look for buffalo, eland, and grazing antelope.

Our third reserve on this compact safari is nearby Crescent Island Sanctuary. We’ll take a quick trip to this small but delightful park and enjoy a guided walking tour past wildebeest, waterbuck, zebra, and gazelle. This is the best way to get close to these gently grazing animals.

Now it’s time to head back to Nairobi and we’ll get you to the destination of your choice by the early evening. We’ve taken in lots of landscapes, colors, and especially wildlife in our 2-day adventure.

We hope you had fun and are ready for more safari action. All of us at Africa Kenya Safaris thank you for sharing this time with us. Thank you – Asante!

A Guide to Visiting Lake Nakuru National Park, Kenya

Lake Nakuru National Park is famed for its population of rhinos

Lake Nakuru National Park, just a three-hour drive from Nairobi in the Great Rift Valley of southwestern Kenya , boasts an abundance of wildlife and spectacular landscapes. Think black and white rhinos, lions, leopards, cheetahs and hippos occupying euphorbia forests, acacia woodlands, savannah grasslands and rocky escarpments around a shallow, alkaline lake. Planning your visit to Lake Nakuru National Park? Discover our guide to one of the best and most easily accessible safari destinations in Kenya.

Tempted to experience it for yourself? Lake Nakuru National Park is one of several fantastic destinations featured on Culture Trip’s exclusive seven-day Kenya tour , led by our local insider.

A brief history of Lake Nakuru National Park

Lake Nakuru is a shallow, alkaline lake

Lake Nakuru has been recognised as a conservation area as far back as 1957. It was declared a bird sanctuary in 1961, before being officially announced as a national park in 1968, extending its boundaries to cover a total area of 188sqkm (73sqmi). In 1977, endangered Rothschild’s giraffes were introduced from western Kenya to protect their population, and in 1984, it was designated as Kenya’s first rhino sanctuary.

The healthiest flamingoes are thought to be the ones that are the brightest pink

Up until 2012, Lake Nakuru was renowned for its vast flamingo population (sometimes exceeding 1.5 million), which covered the lake in a blanket of pink. Since 2012, rising water levels from heavy flooding have drastically reduced this phenomenon, shrinking the flamingos’ breeding and feeding grounds. More recently there have been promising signs of flamingos returning, which bodes well for the health of the park’s biodiversity and its tourism industry.

Which animals to look out for

A group of rhinos is known as a crash

Flamingos might not be as abundant as they once were, but there’s so much other wildlife to see while you’re in Lake Nakuru National Park. It’s one of the best places in Kenya to see rhinos in the wild – there are roughly 100-150 individuals in total, of which 80 percent are white rhinos and 20 percent black. The park also has a strong reputation for leopard sightings, although these creatures are notoriously difficult to spot owing to nocturnal hunting habits and camouflaged fur.

Rothschild’s giraffes have distinctive markings

Lions, cheetahs, hippos, buffalos, hyenas, giraffes and zebras are among the 50 (or more) mammal species living in the park. You can expect to see several types of large python, which are especially prevalent in woodland areas. Also keep an eye out for ostriches, African fish eagles, woolly-necked storks and dusky nightjars, plus an array of other bird species.

When to visit

Lake Nakuru National Park has a pleasant climate

Given that Kenya sits directly on the equator, temperatures don’t tend to fluctuate a great deal throughout the year. Due to Lake Nakuru National Park’s high altitude, it usually avoids the scorchingly hot weather you might expect elsewhere in the country, with temperatures typically hovering around 25-28C (77-82F) during the daytime and dropping overnight to around 10C (50F).

The best time to visit is during one of the dry seasons – either between July and early October, or January through until early March – as these months provide optimal conditions for wildlife viewing. April and May tend to be the wettest months, and are therefore best avoided, as many animals seek shelter during heavy rains, while dirt tracks used for game drives are rendered unfit for purpose.

How to get there

Lake Nakuru is a haven for pelicans

Getting from Nairobi to Nakuru by car is very straightforward – just follow the A104 road the whole way there. From Nakuru town, the entrance to the national park is 4km (2.5mi) to the south. If you’re coming from Maasai Mara National Reserve, it’s around a five-hour journey along a combination of tarmacked and gravel roads.

It’s also possible to fly from Nairobi to the Naishi airstrip at the southern end of Lake Nakuru National Park, which only takes half an hour – although this route doesn’t always operate, so it’s worth checking the schedules closer to the time of your visit if you intend to fly.

Entry to Lake Nakuru National Park costs £45.38 ($60) for non-Kenyan adult visitors per 24 hours and £26.47 ($35) for children.

Where to stay

Lake Nakuru has accommodation options to suit all budgets

There’s an excellent variety of places to stay both within Lake Nakuru National Park and just outside – it all depends on your budget and what kind of experience you’re after. Most lodges and camps offer safari experiences, including game drives, bush walks and bird watching excursions with experienced park rangers.

Within the park, Lake Nakuru Lodge is a delightful eco-friendly retreat, totally surrounded by wilderness, meaning you’ll have a chance to spot wildlife directly from your accommodation. Facilities include a large outdoor pool, a spa, and an on-site restaurant serving delicious Kenyan and Indian cuisine, plus traditional bush barbecues.

Sarova Lion Hill Game Lodge, overlooking the eastern shore of Lake Nakuru, is another outstanding choice, featuring 67 luxurious villas, a panoramic terrace bar and an organic vegetable garden that provides fresh ingredients used in the on-site restaurant. Flamingo Hill Tented Camp and Mbweha Camp, both on the outer edges of the park, are also options worth considering.

If you don’t mind staying just outside the park, there are plenty of hotels in Nakuru town, such as Sarova Woodlands Hotel and Spa, which offers spacious, air-conditioned rooms, two restaurants serving an eclectic mix of cuisines and an outdoor pool. You can spend a night there, and enjoy a game drive in Lake Nakuru National Park, as part of Culture Trip’s specially curated seven-day Kenya adventure .

What else to do

Makalia Falls change size with the seasons

Although going on a wildlife safari is the biggest draw of visiting Lake Nakuru National Park, it’s by no means the only thing to do while you’re there. Take a trip to Baboon Cliff, on the northwestern side of the park, for spectacular views of the lake, and visit the Makalia Falls – a beautiful waterfall on the southern side of the park, with unusual rock formations and a hiking trail nearby. You’ll see plenty of birdlife here, and possibly other animals such as buffaloes, drinking from the rock pools.

Just outside the park, on the outskirts of Nakuru town, the Hyrax Hill Museum provides a fascinating insight into the ancient communities of the Great Rift Valley, through a series of archaeological excavations. Meanwhile, Menengai Crater, a short drive out of town, is one of the largest calderas in the world – another superb hiking spot with magnificent vistas of the surrounding area.

Lake Nakuru Budget Safari Tours

With one of the most picturesque of Kenya’s Rift Valley lakes at its heart, Lake Nakuru National Park is an excellent place for a budget safari. From a practical point of view, Lake Nakuru is a compact park, and is easy to get to, and get around, without the need for high transport costs. But it’s also one of Kenya’s most rewarding parks, with big cats (including tree-climbing lions), black rhino, endangered Rothschild’s giraffe, flamingo and so much more in a very small space. To round it all off, the scenery here is magnificent, with a steep escarpment offering views right out of the classic movie Out of Africa.

5 Questions About Lake Nakuru Budget Safaris

Anthony Ham

Answered by

Anthony ham.

safari lake nakuru

What kind of vehicle can I expect on a budget safari to Lake Nakuru?

“Unless you’re on a self-drive trip, on your Lake Nakuru budget safari you can expect to be driven around in a minibus or a 4WD vehicle. You’ll see the white minibuses in parks all over Kenya, and they’re a good option for parks like Lake Nakuru where you never have to go too far off-road. Specially adapted for safaris, they have a pop-up roof: you stand on the seats and have a great view of the animals and surrounding landscape. Depending on the size of your traveling party, you might also be driven around in a 4WD vehicle. Self-drive budget safaris are not very common in Kenya, certainly when compared to group budget tours, but they are possible. If you are self-driving, you’ll drive a rental 4WD vehicle. Unlike in other countries, you’ll usually be given camping equipment, rather than an adapted 4WD camping vehicle.”

How do I avoid the crowds in Lake Nakuru NP?

“Lake Nakuru is a small and very popular park, which means that it can be difficult to avoid the crowds. One thing you can do is stay at one of the campsites inside the park boundaries. There aren’t many accommodation choices inside the park, so most visitors stay in the nearby town of Nakuru. While they’re still queueing to enter the park around dawn, you can already be out exploring, giving you a precious head start for around an hour before things get crowded. Another way to avoid the crowds is to visit outside the busy high season months (which run from July to March). The only downside to doing this is that April and May are the months with the highest average rainfall. June can be an excellent (and slightly quieter) month to visit.”

Should I camp or stay in cheap lodging on a budget safari in Lake Nakuru NP?

“Apart from one exception, the only option if you want to stay inside the park is to camp. For such a small park, Lake Nakuru has a good number of campsites, most of which are close to the lake. The public campsites have basic facilities that include a shower-and-toilet building, as well as cooking facilities and a shared dining area. The special campsites (which should be for your traveling party alone) are bush camping experiences, with no facilities. The only cheap lodging inside the park is the Wildlife Club of Kenya Guesthouse, a tidy cottage near the lake with simple rooms, shared bathrooms, a kitchen and a lounge. If you don’t mind staying outside the park, the adjacent town of Nakuru has a big range of cheap and affordable accommodation. Many of these are good choices, and they’re just a short drive from the park entrance.”

How much does a Lake Nakuru NP budget trip cost?

“As with all safaris, there are almost as many budget tours and packages as there are operators. As a basic guide, the cheapest budget safaris will start at around US$150 per person per day. It would be less, but you have to factor in the cost of park fees, which for Lake Nakuru National Park are US$60/35 per adult/child per day. You will have to pay these fees, but ask your operator whether they’re included in any prices they quote. Some include them, some don’t and you don’t want any nasty surprises when it comes time to pay. This daily cost estimate should include all accommodation (including campsites and camping equipment), a guide, driver, food, water, and two game drives on most days that you’re in the park. On a really cheap camping safari, you may be expected to help out around camp with some of the camp chores (which might include setting up and taking down tents, cooking and washing up). Prices may be a little lower in the low season, although the difference is not great when it comes to the budget end of the market.”

Is 4 days a good length for a Lake Nakuru NP trip?

“Four days is more than enough time to enjoy your Lake Nakuru budget safari. You are on holiday after all, which means that you don’t want to rush things. With 4 days to enjoy the park, you will be able to really get to know it well. Having this many days also increases your chances of seeing the park’s signature wildlife, whether it’s a leopard, a tree-climbing lion or a rhino down by the lakeshore. This amount of time would also allow you to factor in time to relax, rather than always rushing from one place to the next. At the same time, Lake Nakuru is not a big park. If you only have limited time, a couple of days might be enough to enjoy it, leaving time to add on an excursion to one of the other nearby Rift Valley lakes. These might include Lake Naivasha, Lake Elmenteita or even Lake Baringo. Menengai Crater, Hyrax Hill Prehistoric Site or Hells Gate National Park are other possible excursions.”

You can watch Rhinos easily, but there are very few flamingos that made this lake famous. It takes 3 hours drive from Nairobi with paved road. If you want to do another place in this country other than Masai Mara, this is the best.

Lake Nakuru

safari lake nakuru

'Dabbed in colours of pink as far as the eye can see, the lake shore throbs to the sound of squawking and croaking from the multitude of feeding flamingoes. Millions of greater and lesser Flamingoes squabble in the shallows. On the shore White Rhino and Waterbuck graze among troops of foraging Baboons'.

Lake Nakuru is a wildlife haven but it is the Flamingoes that have earned it its reputation. First time visitors to the park are never disappointed as the sight is quite overwhelming.

Lake Nakuru is the best lake for viewing Flamingoes of all of Kenya's Rift Valley lakes and it is easily the most accessible, and popular of them all. The lake was dubbed by famous ornithologist Roger Peterson as the world's 'Greatest Bird Spectacle'.

Nakuru's Landscapes

The park has a number of vantage points from which to view the lake shore and the massing Flamingoes - and the occasional splashes of white indicate small groups of pelicans that arrived to feed on the alkaline-tolerant fish that were stocked in the lake by the authorities to control mosquito larvae. The fish bred rapidly and attracted a wider variety of birds to the lake.

From the viewpoint the landscape of Nakuru comes into focus. The area is a depression, not unlike Ngorongoro, with the lake dominating the scene. From the shore plains of grass reach into forests of fever trees that hug the ridges.

Sanctuary of Big Game

Game in Nakuru is plentiful with Lions, Impala, Defassa Waterbuck, White Rhino and big herds of Buffalo roaming the open grasslands. A special sighting at Nakuru is the Rothschild Giraffe, introduced into the park for their special protection. With distinct patterning the Rothschild matches the Reticulated Giraffe of the north for dramatic colouring. The park is also a sanctuary for the Black and White Rhino.

The park does not have Elephants as there is the concern that they would damage the fever tree forests but the park is said to have the highest number of Leopard per square kilometer than any park in Africa.

Most visitors use Lake Nakuru as a stopover on route to the Masai Mara and only spend one night in the park, thereby missing much of the experience. A two night stay is highly recommended.
