While waiting for the skies to clear and your flight to take off, you find comfort in knowing that your policy offers coverage for additional expenses incurred during the delay. Whether it's the cost of a meal at the airport or an unplanned overnight stay in a hotel, your travel insurance has got you covered. In times of escalating challenges, AXA is here to assist you in devising a strategic course of action. Here’s the full list of benefits AXA Travel Protection Plans have to offer:

Medical Benefits:

  • Emergency Medical Expenses: Should you fall ill or have an accident during your trip, your policy may offer coverage for medical expenses, including hospital stays and doctor's fees.
  • Emergency Evacuation & Repatriation: In case of a serious medical emergency, your policy may include provisions for evacuation to the nearest appropriate medical facility or repatriation.
  • Non-Emergency Evacuation & Repatriation : In non-medical crises (e.g., political unrest), your policy may cover evacuation or repatriation, subject to policy terms.

Pre-Departure Travel Benefits:

  • Trip Cancellation: You may be eligible for reimbursement if you cancel your trip due to a sudden illness or injury.
  • COVID-19 Travel Insurance: Coverage is available for trip cancellation and medical expenses related to COVID-19, subject to policy terms and conditions.
  • Trip Delay: If your flight faces delays due to unforeseen circumstances, you may have coverage for additional expenses such as meals and accommodations.

Post-Departure Travel Benefits:

  • Trip Interruption: In case of an unexpected event, you could be eligible for reimbursement for the unused portion of your trip.
  • Missed Connection: If you miss a connecting flight due to delays or cancellations, this coverage may help with expenses like rebooking fees and accommodations.

Baggage Benefits:

  • Luggage Delay: If the airline delays your checked baggage, your policy might offer reimbursement for essential items like clothing and toiletries.
  • Lost or Stolen Luggage: In the unfortunate event of permanent loss or theft of your luggage, your policy may offer reimbursement for its value, assisting you in replacing your belongings.

Additional Optional Travel Benefits:

  • Rental Car (Collision Damage Waiver): Exclusive to Gold & Platinum plan policy holders, this optional benefit gives travelers extra coverage on their rental car against damage and theft.
  • Cancel for Any Reason: Exclusive to Platinum plan policy holders; this optional benefit gives travelers more flexibility to cancel their trip for any reason outside of their standard policy.
  • Loss Skier Days: Exclusive to Platinum plan policy holders, this optional benefit offers reimbursement to mitigate some costs associated with pre-paid ski tickets that you or your traveling companion cannot use due to specified slope closures.
  • Loss Golf Days: Exclusive to Platinum plan policy holders, this optional benefit offers reimbursement to mitigate the expenses linked to prepaid golf arrangements that you or your travel companion are unable to utilize due to specified golf closures.

Do I need Travel Insurance for Singapore?

Starting February 13, 2023, visitors to Singapore are no longer mandated to have travel insurance. However, it's highly advised for all travelers to consider obtaining a thorough travel insurance policy that includes coverage for medical emergencies, trip cancellations, and delays. Why? There are several reasons:

Singapore, known for its top-notch healthcare, might surprise you with unexpected medical costs. With coverage for emergency medical expenses, you're offered coverage and assistance for any unforeseen life events.

Lost Baggage: Airlines sometimes mishandle baggage, and the last thing you want is to be without your essentials in an unfamiliar place. Travel insurance offers to cover the cost of replacing necessary items, allowing you to continue.

Despite Singapore's efficient travel network, unexpected delays can happen. The "Trip Delay" benefit comes in handy, covering extra expenses like meals and accommodation so your travel hiccups do not turn into headaches.

How much does Travel Insurance cost for Singapore?

In general, travel insurance costs about 3 – 10% of your total prepaid and non-refundable trip expenses. The cost of travel insurance depends on two factors for AXA Travel Protection plans:

  • Total Trip cost:  The total non-prepaid and non-refundable costs you have already paid for your upcoming trip. This includes prepaid excursions, plane tickets, cruise costs, etc.
  • Age:  Like any other insurance type, the correlation is rooted in increased health risks associated with older individuals. It's important to note that this doesn't make travel insurance unattainable for older individuals.

With AXA Travel Protection, travelers to Singapore will be offered three tiers of insurance:  Silver,   Gold  and  Platinum . Each provides varying levels of coverage to cater to individual's preferences and travel needs.

Our Suggested AXA Travel Protection Plan

AXA presents travelers with three travel plans – the  Silver Plan ,  Gold Plan , and  Platinum Plan , each offering different levels of coverage to suit individual needs. Given that Singapore hospitals often do not accept U.S. health insurance or Medicare, we genuinely recommend travelers to consider purchasing any of these plans, particularly for the crucial coverage they offer for emergency accident and sickness medical expenses. The Platinum Plan is your go-to choice if you're looking for extra coverage for Singapore’s experience. " Cancel for Any Reason " offers greater flexibility for those unexpected twists in your travel plans and the "Rental Car (Collision Damage Waiver)" offers assistance when you're out exploring Singapore's stunning landscapes in a rental car. For avid golfers planning a swing through Singapore’s world-class golf courses, the "Loss Golf Days" benefit is exclusive to Platinum plan policyholders. This optional benefit steps in to offer reimbursement for pre-paid golf arrangements that you might be unable to utilize due to specified golf closures.

What types of medical coverage do AXA Travel Protection plans offer?

AXA covers three types of medical expenses:

  • Emergency medical expenses
  • Emergency evacuation & repatriation
  • Non-medical emergency evacuation & repatriation

Emergency Medical: Offers coverage when unexpected health issues happen, like broken bones, burns, sudden illnesses, or allergic reactions.

Emergency Evacuation and Repatriation: Can cover your immediate transportation home in the event of an accidental injury or illness.

Non-Medical Emergency Evacuation and Repatriation: Comes into play when you urgently need to leave a place for reasons not related to health. This coverage may assist with evacuation in non-medical situations, such as natural disasters or civil unrest.

Are there any COVID-19 restrictions for travelers to Singapore?

Entry into Singapore for all travelers is permitted without the need for entry approvals, pre-departure tests, on-arrival tests, quarantine, or mandatory COVID-19 travel insurance.

Traveling with preexisting medical conditions can complicate your plans, but with AXA Travel Protection, we're here to support you during your trip.

FAQ About Travel Insurance to Singapore

Travel insurance typically covers trip cancellation, trip interruption, lost or stolen luggage, travel delay, and emergency evacuation. Some travel insurance packages also cover medical-related incidents too. However, remember that the exact coverage depends on the insurance policy.

Yes, medical travel insurance is almost always worth it, and we recommend taking out travel insurance whenever visiting a foreign country. Taking out travel insurance will mitigate some or all of the risk of covering those costs yourself in case you need medical attention during your stay. In general, we recommend VisitorsCoverage to travellers worldwide because it offers excellent value for money and well-rounded travel and medical benefits in its large catalogue of plans.

Health insurance doesn't cover normal holiday expenses, such as coverage for missed flights and hotels, but in case you run into medical trouble while abroad, it may cover some or all of your doctor or hospital expenses while overseas. However, not all health insurance providers and plans offer coverage to customers while abroad, and that's why it's generally best to take out travel insurance whenever you travel.

Although there's overlap, health and travel insurance are not exactly the same. Health insurance covers some or all of the cost of medical expenses (e.g. emergency treatment, doctor's visits, etc.) while travel insurance covers non-medical costs that are commonly associated with travelling (e.g. coverage for missed flights, stolen or lost personal belongings, etc.).

The cost of travel insurance depends on several factors, such as the length of the trip, the destination, the age of the traveller, and the level of coverage desired. On average, travel insurance can cost anywhere between 3% and 10% of the total cost of the trip.

A single-trip travel insurance policy covers a specific trip, while an annual one covers multiple trips taken within a one-year period. An annual policy may be more cost-effective for frequent travellers.

Yes, you can sometimes purchase travel insurance after starting your trip, but it is best to buy it before the trip begins to ensure maximum coverage. If you do need to buy insurance after you've started your trip, we recommend VisitorsCoverage , which offers a wide catalogue of online trip and medical insurance policies, most of which can be booked with immediate effect. Check out our guide to buying travel insurance late to learn more.

Yes, you can most certainly purchase travel insurance for a trip that has already been booked, although we recommend purchasing insurance as soon as possible aftwerwards to ensure all coverage is in place before your journey begins. Check out our guide to buying travel insurance late to learn more.

Travel Insurance Singapore Guide (2023): Must-Knows for Choosing the Best Travel Insurance

moneysmart

Travelling is a favourite Singaporean pastime. A national sport, if you would. But while we all love travel and wanderlust, most of us don’t give much thought to buying travel insurance .

Buying travel insurance in Singapore is something a lot of us take for granted. Few of us bother to buy travel insurance ahead of time, and even fewer compare policies to find the best travel insurance in Singapore .

Here is everything you should look out for before buying travel insurance in Singapore.

  • What does travel insurance cover?
  • How to choose travel insurance
  • Travel insurance prices
  • Best travel insurance in Singapore
  • Common mistakes when buying travel insurance
  • Travelling with pre-existing health conditions
  • When should I buy travel insurance?
  • Single trip or annual travel insurance?
  • Compare travel insurance before buying

1. What does travel insurance cover you for?

A good travel insurance policy covers you for a whole series of situations, from the small inconveniences to the most terrible.

Trust me, you never want to be in a situation that you’re not covered for.

It could be a minor inconvenience, like having your luggage delayed and being forced to spend  at least one night in the same clothes you wore on the entire flight. Or it could be a serious medical emergency, like getting stung badly by jellyfish in the middle of a remote island adventure and needing immediate medical attention.

travel-insurance-singapore-guide-what-does-travel-insurance-cover

These days, almost all travel insurance in Singapore automatically includes COVID-19 coverage. That means, you’ll be able to claim from your travel insurance if you get Covid-19 while travelling .

You should also have coverage for everything from lost and delayed luggage, flight delays and cancellations, all the way to medical treatment, medical evacuation and even repatriation in case of serious illness and death. All these different situations have different claim limits, of course.

Travel insurance also covers things like reimbursing deposits if your travel agent goes bust, or if your credit card is used fraudulently overseas. Some policies even pay you if you are kidnapped while overseas!  And the best part is that travel insurance is relatively cheap and convenient to buy.

2. How to choose travel insurance

With so many different benefits in a travel insurance plan, it can be tough to decide if a particular travel insurance plan is worth your money. You should look out for how much you are reimbursed for common travel hiccups.

travel-insurance-singapore-guide-flight-delay

  • Find a travel insurance that covers flight delays and cancellations:  Flight delays happen more often than you realise. They can be extremely inconvenient, especially if it ends up causing you to miss your connecting flight. Ensure that your policy covers you for a decent period of time. For example, if your flight is delayed, some policies pay you $100 for every 6 consecutive hours of delay. There’s usually a cap of around $200-$500, but if you want more coverage  DirectAsia DA150 pays out up to $1,000 for travel delay.

3. Travel insurance prices in Singapore

Travel insurance in Singapore is very price-sensitive, and sometimes insurers can compete to shave off even $1 from their premiums to make their policies more enticing (yay for us!).

travel-insurance-singapore-guide-prices

One way to get a cheaper plan is to see which insurers offer regional travel insurance. If you are only travelling to Thailand, for example, it is usually cheaper to get a policy that covers only SEA or ASEAN countries, rather than a worldwide coverage policy.

However, price is not the only factor—especially since cheap insurance policies often mean significantly less coverage. Buying travel insurance is not like buying a “warehouse sale” LV bag in Chatuchak Market. You don’t just shop around, look for the stall owner with the weakest bargaining skills, and haggle the price down as low as can get.

Look at other aspects of the policy when buying travel insurance . There are many other factors to consider—for example, how much coverage you’re eligible for, and how quickly your claims can be processed. Make sure that you don’t have to wait till the next blue moon before you can see the results of your claims.

4. Which travel insurance to buy in Singapore?

Like anything else you purchase, the best travel insurance is what gives you the most value for money. Say you are only travelling to Thailand for a weekend shopping trip, for example. You’re probably travelling light and don’t need more than $3,000 coverage for loss of baggage, even if you can pay just $3 more for significantly more coverage. Save that $3 and treat yourself to all the Thai milk tea you can drink!

As we said earlier, you shouldn’t be so stingy  and only buy the cheapest. The cheapest may have lots of terms and conditions when it comes to claims . For example, an insurer might not cover delayed luggage if it is only delayed returning to Singapore. However, if this is the only inconvenience you face in your entire trip, you might be understandably upset that it’s not claimable.

The important thing is to read the terms and conditions of your preferred policy carefully and make sure you’re not caught unawares. This is especially important when it comes to medical pre-existing conditions.

5. Common mistakes when buying travel insurance

How many of us actually know how to go about buying a good travel insurance that is suitable for our needs? Here are five common mistakes to avoid when buying travel insurance:

  • Buying the most ‘convenient’ travel insurance : Do you just buy the first travel insurance you see on Google? It is important to read the details of the coverage provided to see if they are adequate for your needs or to cover the risks of the destination you’re travelling to, eg. medical coverage and loss of personal belongings.
  • Buying travel insurance at the last minute : Do you often buy your travel insurance when waiting to board your flight or while making your way to the airport? Yes, better late than never. However, you should be aware that some of the benefits of the travel insurance are applicable (eg. natural disasters , airline strike, tour agency bankruptcy) if you buy travel insurance ahead of your trip.
  • Not buying travel insurance for the entire length of your trip : Should you purchase travel insurance only for the days you are actually overseas? No. You should include flights to and from your holiday destination. In the event of baggage delays, loss or damage, or overbooking of flights, you’d then be able to make a claim. For long haul trips, do remember to cater for the +1 or +2 days that it takes for your flight to reach Singapore.
  • Not reading your travel insurance policy : Not all travel insurances are created equal. In fact, the policy document and terms of coverage makes for rather interesting reading. Do go through the policy document for what’s included and excluded, claim limits, and what you gotta do in order to make a claim.
  • Assuming travel insurance is “one size fits all” : If your holiday includes adventurous elements like skydiving or scuba diving, check to ensure that the travel insurance you are considering covers these activities. MSIG TravelEasy Elite covers a whole range of activities, including sky diving, hot air ballon rides, and bungee jumping. Alternatively, check to ensure that adventurous activities are not excluded from the claims.

6. Will pre-existing conditions affect my travel insurance?

One of the biggest travel insurance stories in 2017 was when a Singaporean man had a heart attack in Tokyo and fell into a coma. The medical costs alone cost $120,000 and bringing him back to Singapore via medical evacuation would cost another $120,000.

Because the man had been diagnosed with heart failure in 2012, his insurer considered it a pre-existing condition and therefore no claim was possible. Currently, one insurer that covers pre-existing conditions is MSIG TravelEasy Pre-Ex travel insurance.

7. When should I buy travel insurance?

There are many, many things that can go wrong when you’re travelling. Half of these things could happen even before you leave the country!

Waiting to buy your travel insurance policy on the day you travel (or worse, after you’ve already crossed into international waters) puts you at risk for travel inconveniences big and small like delays or postponement.

A good travel insurance policy also covers you for your entire trip being cancelled unexpectedly.

You should buy a travel insurance online as soon as you’ve planned your trip. Getting your travel policy as early as possible does not make you “ kiasu ”. It makes you smart.

This is because you’ll want to maximise the coverage you can get from the policy. For example, if you haven’t bought a policy yet and the travel agency you’re booking with closes down a week before your travel, you won’t be able to claim anything. The same goes for flight delays and flight cancellations.

travel-insurance-singapore-guide-when-to-buy

There is no penalty for buying travel insurance earlier, except maybe missing out on promotions that often happen around the travel season. But what’s the point of saving a few dollars and risk losing hundreds due to cancelled flights and hotel deposits?

8. Buy single trip or annual travel insurance?

In the past, it made more sense to buy single trip travel insurance plans when you leave Singapore. That’s because in the past, most people only travel once or twice a year. With the greater nomad and remote working culture … and travels over long weekend, though? It might actually be more convenient to buy an annual plan for your travel insurance.

A good gauge to determine whether to choose between a single trip plan and an annual plan is to ask yourself if you’re going to be travelling more than three times a year . And we’re not just talking about weekend getaways either!

Whether you’re just going across the Causeway or travelling further overseas for work, an annual plan definitely makes more sense to your wallet.

travel-insurance-singapore-guide-single-trip-vs-annual-plan

Depending on how often you travel and how far you travel, it might be worthwhile to consider buying annual travel insurance .

If you are a frequent traveller, you not only save money by buying an annual policy, but you’ll never have to spend time buying insurance every time you fly overseas. Of course, just like single trip travel insurance, you should still compare the various policies online before you commit.

Annual travel insurance has a flat premium and covers you for an entire year of travel. It usually costs about $200-$300 a year, so only buy it it you are a frequent traveller. That is, it only makes sense if you are going to travel overseas more than 7-8 times a year, at least.

9. Why should I compare travel insurance before buying it?

Comparing allows you to choose the best travel insurance policy for your needs. You’ll be able to see at a glance what coverage policies have for various situations, such as medical costs, and compensation levels for lost, delayed and damaged baggage.

But of course, comparing travel insurance in Singapore allows you to see that the cheapest travel insurance policy may not be the best. This is because the cheaper policies usually have significantly less coverage, naturally. While that may be a good thing for some travellers – there’s no need to get a $1,000 coverage for lost luggage if you’re only bringing the bare minimum to a staycation in Bangkok, for example.

Last updated: 03/07/2024

As of February 13, 2023, Singapore no longer requires visitors to obtain a travel insurance policy that covers Covid-19. However, getting a comprehensive travel insurance policy that covers medical emergencies, cancellations, and delays is still strongly recommended to all travelers.

Squaremouth’s Singapore Travel Insurance Recommendations

Squaremouth recommends a policy that offers Emergency Medical coverage with at least $50,000 for international destinations. Squaremouth also recommends travelers have at least $100,000 of Emergency Evacuation coverage as well. All medical policies through Squaremouth offer both Emergency Medical and Emergency Evacuation coverage.

Many travelers visiting Singapore have high prepaid and nonrefundable trip costs. Due to these high trip costs, along with the required medical benefits, Squaremouth recommends travelers purchase a policy with Trip Cancellation coverage. This benefit can reimburse 100% of the traveler’s prepaid and nonrefundable trip expenses if they need to cancel for a covered reason, such as unforeseen illness or injury. Travelers can also be covered under this benefit if they contract Covid-19 before leaving for their trip.

Squaremouth also recommends the Travel Delay benefit providing coverage for the significant travel involved getting to Singapore. Travelers can be covered up to 150% of the trip costs if their flight is delayed, and they miss out on a portion of the trip. It also can cover other reasonable expenses such as food and hotels, as well as required quarantines because of Covid-19.

The most common traveler concern is having to quarantine at their destination. The Travel Delay benefit can typically provide $150 to $200 per day for all covered travelers for required quarantine expenses such as accommodations and food. It can also provide reimbursement for rebooking a different flight home.

Singapore travel insurance guide (2023): what you need to know.

Singapore Travel Insurance Guide

Singapore Travel Insurance Guide

singapore travel insurance 2023

Traveling is a favourite pastime among Singaporeans, despite our love of wanderlust, many of us tend to overlook travel insurance.

Travel insurance is often overlooked by many Singaporeans, as few make the effort to purchase it in advance. Fewer still compare policies to find the most suitable one for their needs. If you are planning to buy travel insurance in Singapore, here is everything you should look out for before making your decision:

1. What does travel insurance cover for you?

It is important to select a travel insurance policy that covers you for a wide range of situations, from the smallest inconveniences to the most severe.

As a matter of fact, I would advise you not to put yourself in a position where you would not be covered. The inconvenience could be as minor as having your luggage delayed and having to spend at least one night in the same clothes you wore on the whole flight in case your luggage is delayed. It could also be a medical emergency that requires immediate attention. For example, getting stung badly by a bee on a remote island adventure and needing medical attention immediately.

Almost all travel insurance in Singapore these days automatically includes Covid-19 coverage as part of the package. This means that if you get Covid-19 while on your travels, you will be able to claim it from your travel insurance. Allianz Travel Insurance has it at a discounted rate of $21.60 after the discount.

In addition, it is important to make sure that you have coverage for everything from lost and delayed luggage, flight delays, and cancellations to medical treatment, medical evacuation, and even repatriation in the event of death or serious illness. The claim limits for each of these different situations are, of course, different.

There are also a few other things that travel insurance can cover. These include reimbursing deposits if your travel agent falls out of business, or if your credit card is used fraudulently overseas. It is possible for some policies to pay you if you are kidnapped while you are abroad! Moreover, the best part about buying travel insurance is that it is relatively cheap and convenient to do so.

2. Insurance for travel – how to choose the right one

When there are so many different benefits to be found in a travel insurance plan, it can be difficult to determine if a particular plan is worth the money you’re paying for it. For common travel hiccups, it is important to check in advance about how much you can expect to be reimbursed.

You should find a travel insurance company that covers flight delays and cancellations: There is a high possibility of flight delays occurring more often than you think. It can be extremely inconvenient for you if this happens, especially if it ends up causing you to miss your connecting flight as a result. Make sure that your policy covers you for a reasonable amount of time so that you are covered in the future. For instance, if your flight is delayed for six consecutive hours, some policies will pay you $100 if you are delayed for six consecutive hours. As a general rule, there is usually a cap of $200-$500 for travel delay insurance.

It is very important to make sure that your policy covers you well in the event of lost or delayed baggage. Several policies provide benefits if your baggage is delayed for six consecutive hours, including Bubblegum Travel Insurance, which will reimburse you $100 per hour. The two policies also cover lost or damaged baggage up to a maximum of $3,000. Don’t forget to pay attention to the maximum amount you’re insured for.

There is no such thing as predicting what might happen on your trip so it is always a better idea to be safe than sorry when it comes to medical coverage overseas. A good travel insurance policy should cover you for at least $200,000 in overseas medical coverage, as well as unlimited coverage for emergency medical evacuation and repatriation in the event of an emergency medical emergency. The Starr TraveLead Insurance policy is one of the policies that fit the bill in terms of coverage.

If you are looking for travel insurance that covers Covid-19 expenses, your policy should be able to cover a range of expenses that you may encounter during your travels (and even before you fly!). It is very important to check whether the travel insurance policy covers cancellations and postponements of trips, as well as medical expenses resulting from Covid-19. An added bonus is the ability to receive a cash allowance while in quarantine abroad. Suppose you are quarantined overseas due to Covid-19, for example, AIG Travel GuardÂŽ Direct – Enhanced covers you for $100 per day for 14 days in the event that you are quarantined.

3. Travel insurance prices in Singapore

Buying travel insurance in Singapore is considered to be a very price-sensitive activity and sometimes insurers are competing to decrease the premiums of their policies by even a dollar, in order to make them more appealing.

If you want to find a lower-cost plan, one of the ways to do this is to check which insurance companies offer regional travel insurance. As an example, if you are planning to travel solely to Thailand, it is usually cheaper to get a policy that covers only the countries of the SEA or Asean region, rather than a policy that covers all the countries of the world.

Despite this, price is not the only factor to consider-especially since cheap insurance policies tend to have significantly lower coverage than their premiums.

When it comes to buying travel insurance, it is important to remember not only the cost of the policy but other elements as well. As well as considering the amount of coverage you are eligible for, and the speed at which your claims will be processed, there are a few other factors to consider, as well. As soon as you have decided to file a claim, remember to avoid waiting until the next blue moon before you are able to see the results of your claim, especially if you are planning to file a claim this year.

4. Travel insurance in Singapore: which one?

In the same way that any other purchase you make, the best travel insurance is the one that provides the most value for your money. Imagine, for example, that you are only traveling to Malaysia for a weekend shopping trip and have nothing else planned.

As a frequent traveler, you are probably traveling light and do not need as much coverage for loss of luggage as $3,000, even if you can pay just $3 more for significantly more protection. Make the most of that $3 and treat yourself to all the Teh Tarik you can consume!

It is important not to be too stingy and buy only the cheapest products as we discussed earlier. In terms of claims, the cheapest insurance may come with quite a few terms and conditions attached to it.

It is possible, for example, that an insurer would not cover delayed luggage if the luggage has only been delayed when returning to Singapore. Even so, if this is the only inconvenience you face on your entire trip, you might be understandably upset that you cannot claim for it since it is the only inconvenience you are experiencing.

You should read the terms and conditions of your preferred insurance policy carefully so that you do not fall victim to any surprises later on. When it comes to pre-existing medical conditions, this is of particular importance.

5. Common Travel insurance mistakes

What’s the best way to buy travel insurance that meets our needs? Travel insurance mistakes to avoid:

Buying the most convenient travel insurance: Do you just buy the first policy you see on Google? Ensure that the coverage provided is adequate for your needs or covers the risks of your destination, e.g. personal belongings and medical coverage.

Buying travel insurance at the last minute: Do you often buy your travel insurance while waiting to board your flight? Better late than never. You should be aware that some of the benefits of travel insurance are only applicable if you buy it in advance.

Buying travel insurance for only the days you are overseas: Should you purchase travel insurance only for those days? No. Include flights to and from your holiday destination. In the event of baggage delays, loss or damage, or overbooking of flights, you can make a claim. Do take into account the +1 or +2 days that it takes your flight to reach Singapore for long-haul trips.

Reading your travel insurance policy: Not all travel insurances are the same. Check your policy document for what’s included and excluded, claim limits, and how to make a claim.

Travel insurance is a one-size-fits-all proposition: Be sure that the travel insurance you are considering covers adventurous activities such as skydiving and scuba diving.  MSIG TravelEasy Elite covers sky diving, hot air balloon rides, and bungee jumping. In alternative, check whether adventurous activities are included.

6. Travel insurance and pre-existing conditions?

One of the biggest travel insurance stories in 2017 was when a Singaporean man suffered a heart attack in Tokyo. Bringing him back to Singapore via medical evacuation would cost another $120,000.

He was denied a claim since his insurer considered his heart failure a preexisting condition. One insurer that covers pre-existing conditions is NTUC Income.

7. When should I buy travel insurance?

There are many things that can go wrong when you travel. Before you leave the country, half of these things could happen!

Buying travel insurance on the day you travel (or worse, after you’ve already crossed into international waters) puts you at risk for travel inconveniences big and small.

It also covers you in the event of an unexpected cancellation.

Once you’ve planned your trip, buy travel insurance online. The early purchase of a travel policy does not make you kiasu. Makes you smart.

Your goal is to maximize the policy’s coverage. The travel agency you’re booking with may close a week before your travel if you haven’t bought a policy yet. The same goes for flight delays and flight cancellations.

There is no penalty for buying travel insurance earlier, except maybe missing out on promotions around travel season. What’s the point of saving a few dollars and losing hundreds due to cancelled flights?

singapore travel insurance 2023

8. Travel insurance for one trip or annual?

It used to make more sense to buy single-trip travel insurance when you left Singapore. In the past, most people only traveled once or twice a year. In this culture of nomadism and remote working while traveling… and long weekends? Travel insurance may actually be more convenient if you buy an annual plan.

Ask yourself if you travel more than three times a year to decide whether to choose a single trip plan or an annual plan. Weekend getaways aren’t all we’re talking about!

An annual plan definitely makes more sense to your wallet, whether you’re just crossing the Causeway or traveling abroad.

It might be worthwhile to consider travel insurance based on how often and how far you travel.

Buying an annual policy saves you money, and you won’t have to buy insurance every time you fly overseas. You should still compare the various policies before you commit, just as you would for single-trip travel insurance.

Annual travel insurance offers a flat rate and covers your entire year. It costs about $200-$300 a year, so only buy it if you travel frequently. Traveling overseas more than seven or eight times a year, at least, makes sense.

9. Is it worth comparing travel insurance?

By comparing travel insurance policies, you can choose the policy that best suits your needs. A glance at coverage levels for medical costs, lost, delayed, and damaged baggage will help you determine what policies have to offer.

Comparing travel insurance in Singapore reveals that the cheapest policy, however, may not be the most effective. Usually, cheaper policies provide less coverage. Loss luggage coverage isn’t necessary if you’re only bringing the bare minimum to a Bangkok staycation.

Do I Need Travel Insurance for Singapore?

As of February 2023, Singapore has eased up on COVID-19-related travel insurance requirements. Visitors are no longer required to obtain travel insurance before entering the country, but the government still highly recommends it.

In case things go wrong, having travel insurance coverage can provide an added layer of security. A comprehensive travel insurance plan may cover emergency medical expenses and assistance, lost or delayed baggage, unexpected trip cancellations and flight delays.

Singapore is known for outdoor adventure activities like kayaking, scuba diving and hiking — and travel insurance can offer peace of mind when you’re exploring the great outdoors. Most plans include emergency medical coverage if you sustain injuries while traveling, and some policies offer protection for sporting gear.

But every traveler is unique and will require different coverage. Whether you’re an adventure aficionado or a business traveler, there’s an insurance plan that’s right for you. Here are the most common travel insurance coverages:

Cancel for Any Reason Coverage

Cancel for any reason coverage , also known as CFAR, allows you to claim reimbursement if you cancel your trip for reasons not listed in your insurance policy. CFAR coverage is advantageous for travelers who might need to cancel their trip for unconventional reasons.

When compared to standard travel insurance, CFAR coverage is more flexible. However, it can be more costly and doesn’t always cover you completely. There are a handful of rules to qualify for coverage, including:

  • You may have to cancel at least 48 hours before your departure date.
  • You need to buy CFAR coverage within a certain number of days after booking your trip.

Gear Theft Protection

Singapore has some of the highest safety rankings in the world . Nevertheless, backing yourself with gear theft protection can still be a wise choice, especially if you’re traveling with valuable personal belongings, travel documents and credit cards.

Travel insurance can help cover you in case your items are lost, damaged or stolen. Although travel insurance policies include predetermined cost limitations and exclusions, coverage is worth considering if you wish to bring the following:

  • A laptop, tablet or smartphone
  • Professional camera and equipment
  • Sports equipment (like a kayak)

Note that, due to sub-limits on some policies, your policy may not cover the full value of your items. Review your policy documents, including the product disclosure statement, to ensure you are protected. If not, you may want to consider leaving some of your more valuable items at home.

Medical Emergency Insurance and Emergency Medical Evacuation

If you encounter health complications during your trip, having travel insurance with medical emergencies and evacuation coverage can make a big difference.

In Singapore, the smog and tropical heat may negatively affect some travelers . Be sure to declare any pre-existing medical conditions like high blood pressure, asthma or skin conditions when booking your trip insurance.

Travel insurance for medical emergencies can cover a variety of scenarios, from viral outbreaks to unforeseen medical treatments. Keep in mind that your U.S. health insurance card may not provide coverage abroad, even if you have a private plan. If things go awry, you’ll have peace of mind knowing you have medical protection with travel insurance.

For medical emergency coverage, a standard travel insurance policy may include:

  • Hospital admission fees
  • Operations and operating room fees
  • Ambulance fees
  • X-rays and lab tests
  • Dental costs

Travel insurance companies also usually include coverage for emergency medical evacuation and repatriation. In recent years following the pandemic, medical insurance has become a consideration for many American travelers.

Some companies also offer medical coverage for sports and adventure enthusiasts. Overseas medical expenses and treatments can add up, especially if you’re into extreme sports.

Rental Car Protection

Singapore requires car rental companies to have insurance . In most cases, rental car insurance in Singapore covers the vehicle in the event of traffic accidents. Most car rental companies opt for a basic collision damage waiver coverage that comes with limitations. Two important factors to look out for include:

  • Most car rental companies will choose to opt for a higher excess, or what you will have to pay when making a claim.
  • The majority of companies will only cover car use in Singapore.

Check your insurance policy before driving a Singapore rental car into other countries. For example, you may not have coverage if you drive a vehicle from Singapore to places like Hong Kong, Brunei, Cambodia or Malaysia.

If you’re traveling to Singapore and planning to rent a car, you can also purchase travel insurance with rental car coverage for extra protection. Some types of rental car coverage include:

  • Collision damage waiver
  • Theft protection
  • Third-party liability
  • Personal accident insurance

Trip Cancellation Insurance

Trip cancellation insurance can reimburse you in the event of unforeseen circumstances while traveling. This type of travel insurance covers cancellations for the following reasons:

  • Death of a traveling companion or immediate family member
  • Diagnosis of a serious medical condition or injury
  • Natural disasters or dangerous weather conditions
  • Domestic or international acts of terrorism
  • Legal obligations like jury duty

Trip cancellation insurance is mostly limited to the above reasons. For more flexibility, it’s best to opt for CFAR coverage.

How Much Does Singapore Travel Insurance Cost?

The cost of travel insurance can vary depending on your coverage preferences, age and desired destination. Whether you’re searching for single-trip plans or annual multi-trip coverage, there are multiple providers to consider. And if you are on a budget, cheap travel insurance options are available.

To receive a quote from a travel insurance provider, you’ll be required to submit the following information:

  • Destination country
  • Your home location
  • Age group and the number of travelers
  • Total trip price

To offer insight into typical costs, we gathered quotes from five different travel insurance providers. We based the following prices on a 30-year-old traveler from California to Singapore for two weeks, with a total trip cost of $4,000.

*Note: We collected the above quotes from each company’s website in May 2023. Plans include coverage for trip cancellation, trip interruption, medical emergencies and baggage delay or loss.

How Do I Get Travel Insurance for Singapore?

There are a few things to consider before purchasing a travel insurance plan for your trip to Singapore. First, it’s worth seeing if your current health insurance plan or credit card offers any overseas coverage. We also recommend you check to see if your health insurance extends to medical emergencies abroad.

Compare various insurance options and consider factors like COVID-19 coverage, medical expenses, emergency assistance, trip cancellation and travel delays. For example, most major airlines offer travel insurance when booking flights, but coverage may not include specific medical emergencies.

Remember, full reimbursement isn’t always guaranteed, so carefully review policy wording and disclaimers. Familiarize yourself with coverage exclusions and consider add-ons to enhance your travel insurance coverage.

Singapore Safety Tips

Singapore is considered one of the safest countries for travel . Whether you are traversing this modern, metropolitan city-state as an experienced traveler or a first-timer, here are some things to take into account:

Crime and Safety

Crime rates are relatively low in Singapore. However, petty crime can still happen in major tourist areas, hotel lobbies, airports and public transportation facilities. Keep an eye out for pickpocketing and theft and, if possible, keep your valuables stored in locked safes when not in use.

Day Trips, Tours and Excursions

There are plenty of options for travel from Singapore, whether you are planning a day trip to Malaysia or a longer stay in Indonesia or Thailand. If you’re planning an active activity, make sure your travel insurance plan covers medical expenses and emergency assistance.

As of February 2023, the Singapore government has lifted all restrictions regarding COVID-19 .

The country does not require COVID-19 coverage and vaccinations for international air travelers. You also do not need to show a vaccine passport to return to the U.S.

In case of an emergency when traveling in Singapore, call the U.S. Embassy hotline at +(65) 6476-9100.

Is Travel Insurance for a Singapore Vacation Worth It?

Although travel insurance for a Singapore vacation is not mandatory, it comes with many benefits. Standard insurance may cover you for lost baggage, medical emergencies, flight postponements or other travel inconveniences. Or you can opt for more comprehensive coverage, which could include protection for valuable items like cameras and sporting gear.

Travel insurance can also offer peace of mind if you have to cancel your trip due to unforeseen circumstances. Plus, there are many add-on options to improve your travel insurance coverage — like CFAR or rental car coverage.

Ultimately, it’s up to you if travel insurance is worth it for a vacation to Singapore. We recommend comparing quotes and general information from at least three travel insurance companies before purchasing a policy.

How to Choose The Best Travel Insurance?

How to Choose The Best Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is a critical aspect to consider when planning your trip. Since there are various plans from various insurance companies, you may be confused about choosing the best travel insurance in Singapore.

Here is a simple guide to help you in making the wise decision on how to choose the best travel insurance:

1. Assess Your Needs

To find your best-fit travel insurance, you must understand your needs. There is no 1 plan that can be the best fit for everyone since the criteria for each other are different. Let’s list some factors to help you determine which type of travel insurance you need.

Considering Your Medical Coverage

Let’s think about what is the major aim for you in buying travel insurance. Can you obtain compensation when your flight cancellation or trip is delayed? Or did you need medical coverage in a country with high medical costs to deal with accidental?

This is the scenario for you: When you are going on your cosy trip to Hawaii and doing some water activities, but unfortunately, your legs are broken due to the accident. According to the statistics, to fix a broken leg can cost up to $7,500 , and the average cost of a 3-day hospital stay is around $30,000, so can you afford these expensive medical costs during travel in the US?

The accident is unpredictable, the only thing we can do is have a solution plan to handle when the accident happens. Therefore, medical coverage must be considered when choosing your best travel insurance.

Type of Trip

Are you going on a short vacation or an extended backpacking adventure? The trip duration is crucial for determining whether you must purchase the annual plan or a single trip.

Besides, the trip’s location is a factor you must be concerned about. Most travel insurance companies in Singapore have category travel insurance plans by Asia and worldwide, not including Canada & US and Worldwide but included Canada & US. If you purchase the wrong travel insurance plan, it is useless to hold the travel insurance plan.

Activities During Your Trip

Other than the type of trip, the activities during your trip are crucial. Not all travel insurance in Singapore covers risky or adventure activities such as scuba diving or mountain trekking. If these activities are planned in your trips, you must ensure your travel insurance is covered.

2. Read the Fine Print

I believe most people don’t have the behaviour to read the terms and conditions or the fine print of insurance due to the insurance policy being too many words and complicated to understand.

Hence, you may be unable to claim your insurance, and you don’t even know the reason for being unable to claim. Here are the details you have to know for choosing your best travel insurance.

Understand the Coverage Details

You could be lazy to read the whole insurance policy, but you must be able to ask your insurance agents some questions. For example, “What is the travel insurance coverage” and “What does the travel insurance cover for and what is not covered for”.

In this modern era, getting travel insurance information and comparing it to a different plan is easy. After researching, you will better understand your travel insurance coverage details. Moreover, the more coverage details you know, the more protection you will gain during your trips.

Know the Claim Process

Understanding the claim process is also important, same as the coverage details. Coverage details are ways to protect our privileges, and the claim process is the way for us to ask for what we deserve, like compensation.

If you purchase with an insurance agent, he/she is responsible. Congratulations! your insurance agent will help you to complete the claim process and get the compensation you deserve.

If you don’t have an insurance agency, you have to handle your own claim. Also, you don’t know how the claim process works, so it may take a long time to finish.

The claim process will be complicated due to the various documents needed to prove it, and it will cause you to take several times to submit the documents.

Exclusions of Your Insurance

As for the coverage details, you must understand your travel policy’s exclusions clearly. There might be some exclusions on your travel insurance. For example, if you have drug behaviour or excessive drinking, it will be the exclusions reason to exclude your claim.

3. Consider Annual Multi-Trip Insurance

After the Covid-19 pandemic, most Singaporeans are planning a few time vacations. If you are the person I mentioned, you may seek the best travel insurance in Singapore. Then consider the annual multi-trip insurance.

Annual travel insurance is quite similar to single-trip travel insurance, but it is worth it for those people who travel more than 1 time. With annual travel insurance, you can save time on purchasing travel insurance for every trip.

Besides, the price of the annual multi-trip travel plan might be more economical than buying separate policies for each trip. For leisure or business, the annual travel insurance is the best choice if you’re a frequent traveller.

Types Of Travel Insurance Coverage

Types Of Travel Insurance Coverage

Various types of travel insurance coverage are available, catering to the diverse needs of travellers. I will list the details for each type of travel insurance coverage to help you find the best travel insurance in Singapore.

1. Emergency Medical Expenses Coverage

This is the most important coverage in travel insurance. It will help to cover unforeseen medical costs incurred while travelling, especially essential for destinations with high medical care expenses. You may need to seek higher medical expense coverage as your priority factors on your best travel insurance.

2. Trip Cancellation and Interruption Coverage

This is another privilege for the insured. If unforeseen circumstances force you to cancel or cut your trip short, this coverage will compensate for prepaid, non-refundable expenses.

The scenarios can be personal illness, death in the family or other emergencies. The compensation varies for different plans, and you can also consider this coverage to have a solution for unforeseen circumstances.

3. Lost Luggage and Personal Belongings Coverage

All accidents may happen to you, and travel Insurance is doing its best to protect your assets. Travel Insurance has set this coverage to compensate its customers for lost, stolen, or damaged personal items during the trip.

Besides, travel insurance in Singapore has some limitations on the compensation. There may be limited reimbursement amounts for specific categories of items, such as electronics or jewellery.

4. Flight Delay and Missed Connection Coverage

This is a very simple coverage detail, the travel insurance in Singapore will compensate for additional expenses incurred due to delayed or missed flights, such as meals, accommodation, and alternative transportation.

5. Special Activities and Sports Coverage

Most original travel insurance plans do not cover risky activities and sports. For example, scuba diving, skiing, or mountain climbing.

If you are willing to have this coverage, you are allowed to add on this additional coverage. Once your request is accepted, you will be covered for the special activities and sports. Relatively, you have to pay more premium for your travel policy.

Single-trip vs. Annual multi-trip plan: Make the right choice

Before choosing the best travel insurance, let’s find out the details of single-trip and annual multi-trip plans to determine which one you should pick.

Here is the comparison table between single-trip and annual multi-trip plans.

Single Trip vs. Annual Travel Insurance Cost Comparison

To make the right choice on a single trip or annual multi-trips plan, you must determine whether you are a frequent or infrequent traveller.

According to the travel insurance cost comparison, it is only different for the amount you have to pay. Therefore, I recommend that frequent travellers choose annual travel to save costs and time. On the contrary, a single-trip insurance plan is suitable and cost-effective for those infrequent travellers who will be travelling once or twice a year.

What to Take Note With Pre-Existing Conditions While Travelling?

Pre-existing conditions mean you have any disease or medical conditions before purchasing the travel insurance. This could include chronic illnesses, such as heart disease or asthma, as well as injuries from the past. You must consider how important the pre-existing condition might influence your travel and the policy.

1. Why Disclosure Matters

We must honestly disclose our medical conditions to the insurance companies before purchasing travel insurance. If you keep this information hidden, the insurance companies can reject your claim or refuse your policy.

Honesty to the insurance company is important, they have the right to refuse your policy after you notice you have hidden the medical condition. It also affected your trustworthiness in all the travel insurance companies in Singapore.

Not all pre-existing conditions are rejected by insurance companies, it will only cause your premium to be higher than usual. To ensure you have medical coverage during travel, the higher payment is worth it, better than getting a rejected claim or refusing your policy.

2. Travel Coverage of Pre-existing Conditions

Although the basic travel plan excludes pre-existing conditions, it will provide specialised policies to cater to these needs after you disclose your medical conditions.

Besides, the travel insurance companies may provide professional advice to you. For example, what to take note of during travel and what protection you can get overseas.

3. Necessary Medication and Documents Checklist

Ensure you have a copy of medical records, a sufficient supply of all your medications, and any special equipment you might rely on. Besides, you must check the regulations surrounding transporting medications across international borders to avoid the restrictions.

Once you prepare all the necessary documents, your medication can be brought even if restricted. Moreover, medical documents may save your life when you need to be hospitalised overseas.

How to Make Insurance Claim?

Although this is the knowledge we don’t wish to use, this is the crucial process all travellers must know. Therefore, we must understand how to claim to ensure you receive the compensation you’re entitled to. Here is the guideline on how to do it:

1. Gathering Necessary Documents

Gathering the necessary documents is the first step to initiating a claim for travel insurance in Singapore. Here, we recommend collecting the original copy as the necessary documents because most travel insurance companies in Singapore require the original copy.

The necessary documents can be photographic evidence of damaged belongings, receipts for unexpected expenses, or any formal reports, if required, such as a police or medical report. If medical assistance is needed, collect all relevant medical documents and invoices.

Besides, having a copy of your insurance policy helps you deal with the claim departments and saves time waiting for them to retrieve your policy details.

2. Filing the Claim

Once the necessary documents are in place, the next step is to file the claim. Moreover, you are available to download the claim form from their official website.

When filling out this form, it’s crucial to provide detailed and accurate information about the incident and the nature of the claim. Attach all the gathered documents to substantiate your claim, ensuring that the evidence aligns with what is stated in the form.

After completing the form and attaching the necessary documents, submit the claim to the insurance company using the method they specify: email, physical mail, or an online portal.

3. Follow-up and Settlement

After submitting the claim form, the travel insurance companies will take a few business days to process, and they will provide a reference or claim number for tracking purposes.

You must keep following the progress with the reference number in case the insurance company requests additional information or documents.

Once the company has finalised the assessment, you can check the claim state with the reference number. The claim can be successful or failure. If the claim is successful, you may receive direct payment, reimbursement, or repair/replacement of damaged items.

On the contrary, you have the right to know the reason if the claim is rejected. If unsatisfied with their reasons, you can leverage the company’s dispute resolution mechanism, which usually begins with an internal review and can be escalated if necessary.

You may be confused about choosing which travel insurance to buy in Singapore, but you must understand your needs before finding the best travel insurance in Singapore.

After reading this guide, you will have a greater understanding of insurance and be able to find the best travel insurance in Singapore.

Sounds like a great trip! In this case, you will need to buy 2 separate single trip policies because the coverage for a single trip policy ends when you return to Singapore. Yes, please select all destinations on your itinerary.

• Cancellation for Single Trip Policy: The policyholder may cancel this Policy at any time prior to the commencement of this Policy coverage and the cancellation will apply from the date we receive the notice of cancellation. We will refund the premium paid less S$25 administrative charge. However, there will be no refund if we receive the notice of cancellation on or after your trip departure date.

• Cancellation for Annual Multi-Trip Policy: If this Policy is issued as an annual multi-trip Policy, it may be terminated by either party by giving 1 month’s written notice. If this Policy is terminated by us, a pro-rata refund of premium will be granted to the Insured for the remaining part of the Policy Period. If the Insured terminates this Policy, the refund of premium will be based on the following scale:

Q41: Can I amend the start date of my travel policy?

Unfortunately, it is not possible to amend the start date. The existing policy would need to be cancelled and replaced with a new policy. Please note that you cannot cancel a short-term travel policy once you have passed the designated start date.

Q42: What type of changes do we need to tell you about?

You will need to inform us of any changes to the information completed when taking out travel insurance from us. This will include, but not be limited to: your name, your travelling companion details, details of your children, trip details including region to be visited and duration of trip, and any other additional information that might impact on your risk either before or while travelling.
