-------------------------------------

France’s largest commercial port, Marseille is a vibrant city. Sometimes you barely realize that you’re in France, with landmarks like the Byzantine-style Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde, a beloved church with great vistas, the city’s most photographed sight. Open-air markets let you know that North Africa is not far away, and the amount of Italian you hear on the street is a reminder that a third of the population can trace their roots back to Italy. Almost every exploration of the city starts at the Vieux Port, or Old Port, flanked by two ancient forts.

Palaeolithic cave paintings in the underwater Cosquer cave, near the Morgiou calanque, dating between 27,000 and 19,000 BC, and neolithic brick habitations from around 6000 BC are evidence of long-time human habitation. Called the oldest city in France, Μασσαλία was founded as a trading port in 600 BC, by Greeks from Phocaea. As the Roman city of Massalia it thrived, contributing goods and wine from inland Gaul to the wealth of the empire. The rule of Visigoths, Frankish kings, the Emperor Charlemagne and the Carolingian dynasty followed.

During the 18th century Marseille became France's leading military port in the Mediterranean, with a major role in French imperial conquests from 1830 onwards, in Algeria/Morocco and other parts of Africa, and in Southeast Asia. After WWII over a million immigrants came to France through the city, many from former colonies. Those who stayed gave the city a French-African quarter with it's famous market.

As with just about any port city, Marseille has an active gay scene. Locals aren’t into public displays of affection seen in Paris, so you won’t see many men holding hands on the street; but the Marseille Gay Pride each July is an open and festive occasion with parade and downtown street party, now embraced by much of the population at large. The nearby cities of Avignon, Montpelier, and Nîmes, form a regional triangle with Marseille; each has it's own gay scene.

Getting here

Marseille Provence Airport is about 12 miles northwest of the city. It’s France’s second largest gateway, so there are direct connections from almost everywhere except North America. You’ll likely have to transfer in Paris. Trains and buses , each running every 20 minutes or so, will get you from Vitrolles station to Marseille in 25 minutes for around five to ten euros. Take the 5 minute shuttle bus at quay 2 from the terminal building. Arles, Avignon, Montpelier, and Nimes also have direct rail links, and for Aix-en-Provence there's a bus. Shuttle buses and taxis are also standing by to take you to your hotel. For Cannes, Nice and Toulon, change at Marseille. The Gare Saint Charles, main train station, has national and regional rail connections provided by SNCF and TER

Getting around

Downtown Marseille is crisscrossed by bus routes, 30 stations on two lines of the Metro train system, and a tramway - all operated by RTM . Single trip fares are €1.70, or €2 on board the bus. Ten trip multi-user cards are €14. A 24-hour pass costs €5.20 and for 72 hours it's €10.80. For an overview of local transit in English see UrbanRail/Marseille .

From the Tourist Office you can buy a City Pass for a day (€26), two days (€33), or three days (€41), with unlimited access to all RTM routes, entry to 15 museums , a boat trip, a guided tour of Chateau d'If fortress, and the train to the Basilica of Notre-Dame de la Garde . Taxis are a good bet late at night, and to see the other towns and villages of Provence, a car rental is useful.

To bike around town, sign up for five euros at the website of Le Vélo  to use their network of 1,000 self-service stations, 6am to midnight all year round, roughly 300 meters apart all over town. As with similar plans in other cities, the 30 first minutes of each trip are free of charge, so short trips cost nothing.

Currency and Money

France is part of the Euro Zone, so the euro is the accepted currency. There are plenty of ATMs in the downtown area.

Although same-sex sexual activity faced capital punishment during the Ancien Régime, the French Revolution in 1791 saw the repeal of all sodomy laws. This marked the beginning of a more progressive stance on LGBT rights in the country.

In the 1990s and early 2000s, significant progress in LGBT rights was achieved with the introduction of the Civil Solidarity Pact (PACS) in 1999. PACS was a form of civil union that offered legal recognition and protection for same-sex couples. Additionally, the age of consent for homosexuals was equalized in 1982, lowered from 21 to 18, providing further civil liberties to the LGBT community.

Although France has come a long way in terms of LGBT rights, it’s important to note that situations can change quickly, and travelers should seek up-to-date advice before visiting. Both local people and tourists should remain vigilant and be aware that bad actors may exist in every country.

To ensure your safety and well-being, familiarize yourself with local LGBT advocacy groups and seek their guidance on current issues and safe spaces. These organizations are valuable resources for navigating the complexities of the local LGBT community and can help you understand the nuances of the laws and the social climate.

Remember to always err on the side of caution and be aware that the situation can change. Stay informed with the latest information, connect with local advocacy groups, and remain vigilant to protect yourself and those around you. As you explore the historical and vibrant LGBT community in France, approach it with enthusiasm and excitement for the progress achieved and the continued fight for equality.

Additionally, there is no censorship regarding LGBT content, and changing one’s gender is legal without the requirement of surgery. Discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity is illegal in France, both in employment and housing situations.

Visiting France as an LGBT tourist or local individual comes with important factors to consider. Though legal protections are in place, always remember that situations can change and there might be bad actors in every country. Remain vigilant and stay updated on current information before traveling.

In France, it’s exciting to see the fight for equality continue, and several LGBT advocacy groups actively work to maintain and improve the rights of the community. Recently, France passed a law criminalizing “conversion therapy,” further showcasing the country’s dedication to LGBT rights.

The LGBT Social Situation In France

In recent years, France has made significant progress in the realm of LGBT rights, and living openly as an LGBT individual is more accepted than in the past. In fact, many French people no longer view homosexuality as a flaw, with a notable decrease from 42% in 1975 to just 8% today. However, it’s important to remember that the situation can change quickly, and it’s crucial to stay informed and vigilant, especially for tourists visiting the country.

While locals may enjoy a more tolerant environment due to ongoing societal changes, tourists should be aware that they may encounter different experiences and attitudes. As a visitor, it’s essential to exercise caution and seek current advice before traveling, as situations can change rapidly, and information can become outdated.

Certain measures can be taken to protect oneself while visiting or living in France. First, be aware of your surroundings and trust your instincts; if something doesn’t feel right, move on to a safer area or seek help from local authorities. Additionally, familiarize yourself with local LGBT advocacy groups, like SOS Homophobie and Le Refuge , to stay informed about ongoing changes and developments in French LGBT rights. Connecting with these organizations can help you remain updated on any emergent issues or concerns within the community.

Remember, although there have been considerable advancements in LGBT rights in France, bad actors exist in every country, and it’s essential to remain vigilant. Trans Rights In France

In France, transgender rights have made significant progress, and there is a continuous effort to ensure that the local population and tourists alike enjoy a safe and inclusive environment. Transgender individuals in France can legally change their gender without undergoing surgery, which is a significant milestone for trans rights.

However, it’s essential to remain vigilant as there are always bad actors in any country. The situation can change fast, and information can become outdated quickly. So, it’s crucial to seek current advice before traveling, especially if you’re part of the LGBT+ community or a trans traveler.

Several LGBT advocacy groups in France are working tirelessly to ensure that the rights of the LGBT community are respected and protected. Some notable organizations include “ Inter-LGBT ,” “ MAG Jeunes LGBT ,” and “Le Refuge.” These groups are committed to providing support and fighting for the rights of LGBT individuals in France.

If you’re a traveler and need any assistance, these organizations can provide valuable support and resources. Additionally, researching various resources, safe places, and liaisons in France can provide more security and comfort for trans individuals.

To protect yourself, it’s crucial to stay informed, know your rights, and identify safe spaces before traveling. Additionally, engaging with local LGBT support and community groups can help you stay updated on the situation and navigate your way safely in France. Remember, situations can change rapidly, and it’s our responsibility to ensure that we’re up-to-date and well-prepared for any potential challenges on our journey. So, stay excited and embrace the beautiful and diverse experiences France has to offer!

The Future For The Queer Community In France

The future of LGBT rights in France is showing promise as the government continues to take steps to address discrimination and support the community. Recently, France has passed a new law criminalizing “conversion therapy,” which attempts to change the sexual orientation or gender identity of LGBTQ people. Furthermore, the government has unveiled a national plan to combat hatred and discrimination against the LGBTQ community, emphasizing the importance of inclusiveness.

For both local individuals and tourists, it is essential to remain vigilant as situations can change rapidly, and information may become outdated. Before traveling, one should seek the most current advice and remain aware that there are always bad actors in every country.

With the French government’s dedication to combating prejudice and ensuring equality for all, there are reasons to be optimistic about the future. Paris itself is taking the lead by declaring itself an “LGBTQI+ freedom zone”, incorporating concrete measures for the protection and support of LGBTQI+ people, as well as training programs for officers.

Various LGBT advocacy groups are active in France, and they can be a valuable source of information and support. These groups work tirelessly to improve the rights and acceptance of the LGBT community in the country, fostering a more inclusive and open society for all.

Protect Yourself While Travelling In Gay France

LGBT rights in France have come a long way, making it a generally accepting and welcoming country for locals and tourists alike. However, it is always important to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to protect oneself, as bad actors can be found in any country.

While France has laws in place to protect the LGBT community from discrimination and hate crimes, travelers should keep in mind that the overall atmosphere and level of acceptance can vary by region. Major cities like Paris and Lyon tend to be more open and progressive, while rural areas might be more conservative.

To protect yourself in your daily interactions, make sure you stay informed about the current social climate and be aware of your surroundings. Stay updated on any changes in legislation or local attitudes that might impact your safety by checking in with news sources and connecting with local LGBT advocacy groups.

France is one of the most visited countries in the world,  consistently topping the UN’s World Tourism Organization annual report on the country that receives the most visitors. It’s no surprise given the many cultural hotspots to visit like Paris, Lyon, Nice, Deauville, the Alpine mountains, ski resorts, beaches, picturesque villages and no fewer than 44 UNESCO World Heritage sites. France also boasts one of the most recognized and popular cuisines with an abundance of highly rated wines and cheeses. French cuisine is so notorious that it was declared a “world intangible heritage” by UNESCO in 2010.

France is considered one of the most LGBTQ+ friendly countries in the world, consistently coming at the top of LGBTQ+ reports, such as the  Spartacus gay travel index  and the ILGA Rainbow Europe study. Same-sex marriage has been legal in France since 2013 and was one of the first countries to decriminalize homosexuality back in 1791. The French have always maintained a laissez-faire attitude toward sexuality, i.e. not interfering in matters that may seem too personal and respecting the privacy of others. As a LGBTQ+ traveler in France you are unlikely to experience any problems.

Most of the big cities have a LGBTQ+ scene, particularly the Marais district of Paris. There are also numerous LGBTQ+ events happening throughout the year, which you may want to plan your trip around.

Why Visit France & When to Go

France is a foodie paradise, which is reason enough to visit. Alongside this, it has a rich cultural heritage with touristic highlights like the Eiffel Tower, the Palace of Versailles, skiing in the Alps and the beaches in the south. It also has festivals taking place throughout the year, making it a destination you can visit at any time.

With regards to the climate, France has four clear seasons: winter between December to February, spring in March-May, summer is June to August and fall from September to November. The peak months are July and August when prices are at their highest and attractions are full of people. Therefore, the months around this are the best time to visit to avoid the crowds while still having the best weather. The winter months are ideal for skiing in the Alps.

Interesting Cities to Visit in France

Paris, one of the most visited cities in the world, was nicknamed “The City of Light” because it was the birthplace of the Age of Enlightenment in the 1700s. The nickname stuck and has since popularized because every evening, the city’s many famous landmarks and sites are illuminated to full glory. These include the Eiffel Tower, the many boulevards, bridges, the Champs-Elysées, Arc de Triomphe and many more. The Louvre Museum is the world’s largest art museum as well as being a historic monument. Finally, the Marais district is the focal point of  the city’s LGBTQ+ scene  with the landmark  BHV and BHV Homme department store , the many small cafes, LGBTQ+ bars like Duplex, boutique shops and art galleries.

Nice  is located in southern France along the Mediterranean. The historic center of Nice (called Vieux Nice) has narrow cobblestone streets, Baroque churches and lively markets selling ‘Niçois” ingredients like black olives, tomatoes and anchovies.

Nice has a long 7km (4.4 miles) beachfront promenade called Promenade des Anglais, which is a romantic spot for sunset strolls or a morning run.

Nice also has a vibrant LGBTQ+ scene, largely based in and around the Vieux Nice with hangouts like Le Glam. There are LGBTQ+ events taking place throughout the year like the Lou Queernaval, which takes place during the city’s large Carnival in February/March. Finally, LGBTQ+ travelers will want to note the gay/nude beaches in and around Nice, like St Laurent d’Eze, Coco Beach and Castel Plage. Nice has been a Silver-level IGLTA Global Partner since 2011.

Lyon is nicknamed the gastronomic capital of France with an abundance of restaurants called bouchons. This is the place to come for culinary French highlights like saucisson de Lyon (sausage), andouillete (sausage of coarsely cut tripe) and coq au vin (chicken casserole cooked in wine).

Lyon is France’s third-largest city (after Paris and Marseille), located right in the heart of the country, on the doorstep to the Alps. The pretty cobblestone Old Town (Vieux Lyon) is not only UNESCO listed, but a delight to explore whatever the weather. Lyon comes alive during the annual four-day Light Festival in early December called the Fête des Lumières.

CARCASSONNE

Carcassonne, located in the south of France, is famous for its UNESCO-listed fortified city, which looks more like something taken from a Medieval fairytale. The walled town of Carcassonne is called the Cité. It includes many narrow winding cobblestone lanes and quaint old houses and has been really well maintained so that every building, street and square looks like it would have in the Middle Ages.

Some of the touristic highlights of Carcassonne include the double-circuited ramparts with 54 towers and the Cathedral of Saint-Nazaire which dates back to the 1200s. The city is busy throughout the year, but the best time to visit is on Bastille Day on 14 July for the fireworks.

Bordeaux is renowned for its wine. As such, this is the place to come for some of the best wine tours. The city is also great for exploring, particularly the cobblestone street Rue Saint Catherine, which at 1.2km (.74 miles) is Europe’s longest pedestrian shopping street. There is also an entire museum in Bordeaux dedicated to wine called La Cite du Vin, which includes tasting sessions. Also look out for the Miroir d’Eau, which is the world’s largest reflecting pool, located on the Quay of the Garonne in front of the Place de la Bourse.

Deauville is a seaside resort town on the northwest coast of France. It’s an upscale holiday destination and is well known for its casino, golf, horse races, sailing and film festival. Deauville offers fine-sand beaches with colorful sun umbrellas and its famous Boardwalk "Les Planches," as well as its many turn-of-the-century villas. The town also hosts a number of cultural events throughout the year including the Asian and American Film Festivals, Easter Festival and Musical August, the Books & Music Fair and the Women’s Forum.

Interesting Attractions to Visit in France

Skiing in the french alps.

France’s skiing industry comes alive during the winter months of December, January and February, which see the heaviest snowfall. The small towns and villages around the Alps mountain range become ski resort hotspots, with annual gay ski weeks taking place like the European Gay Ski Week. The villages and small towns of the Alps are also worth visiting for hiking and rock climbing. Foodies will want to factor plenty of fondue and raclette into their skiing adventures.

THE PALACE OF VERSAILLES

The Versailles Palace was the main royal residence from 1689 under Louise XIV until the start of the French Revolution in 1789 under Louise XVI. It was built to show off the glory of the French monarchy with a lavish interior and elegant Baroque facades. Highlights for visitors include the Hall of Mirrors, where courtiers waited for an audience with the king; sunlight enters through the windows and is reflected off the large ornamental mirrors. The Palace is also surrounded with a vast garden, which has decorative pools, perfectly trimmed shrubbery and fountains.

MONT ST-MICHEL

Mont St-Michel is a large castle on a rocky islet located on the coast of Normandy in the northwest. It is one of France’s most striking landmarks. At high tide, Mont-Saint-Michel is an island. At low tide, you can walk across the sand to reach it.

The main tourist attraction here is the Gothic abbey, Abbaye de Saint-Michel. It was founded in 708 by Archbishop Aubert of Avranches after the Archangel Michael appeared to him in a vision. The Gothic spires soar 155 meters (508 feet) above the sea.

MAGICAL PRIDE AT DISNEYLAND PARIS

Disneyland Paris maybe a popular attraction for children and families, but LGBTQ+ Disney-loving travelers will want to check out one of the Magical Pride days that take place here throughout the year. It includes access to selected areas, Meet ‘n’ Greets with Disney characters, a Magical March Diversity Parade, DJs, live music performances and karaoke theatre experiences.

THE BEACHES OF THE FRENCH RIVIERA

The Côte d'Azur or French Riviera boasts France’s best beaches. Its name translates to “Coast of Blue,” a reference to the deep blue color of the Mediterranean Sea.

The Côte d'Azur is located in the southeastern corner of France from Saint-Topez to Menton near the Italian border. During the summer months, the seaside resorts come alive as they pack out with beach lovers looking for their slice of Mediterranean paradise. LGBTQ+ travelers will want to check out the gay and nude beaches here, such as Saint-Laurent-d'Eze Plage and Coco Beach. Nice is considered the port of entry for the Côte d'Azur and has the third largest airport in France.

ROAD TRIP IN THE LOIRE VALLEY

The picturesque Loire Valley in Central France is famous for its wine production, woodlands, river valleys, castles and medieval fortresses built on hilltops and surrounded by ramparts. It stretches from the Muscadet region on the Atlantic coast to the regions of Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé just southeast of the city of Orléans in north central France, making it ideal for a road trip.

The Loire Valley is so pretty that it is nicknamed “the Garden of France” and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Some of the most impressive buildings to look out for in the region include Château de Chambord, Château de Chenonceau and Cheverny.

HIKING IN THE PROVENCE REGION

The Provence region in southeast France has unique landscapes with olive groves, rolling hills and lavender fields, with little villages nestled in the valleys, perched on dramatic rocky outcrops. This makes it an ideal place for hikers, with no fewer than 398 hiking trails.

Some of the popular stopovers include the market town of Aix-en-Provence, Arles for its ancient ruins and traditional festivals, and Avignon, the medieval city of popes. Also look out for beautiful tiny villages like Saint-Paul-de-Vence, Saint-Rémy and Gordes, each with their own quaint ambience.

Experiencing French Food

French cuisine is one of the most popular and highly regarded in the world. So much so that it was UNESCO listed in 2010. Every village and town in France will have several mouthwatering bakeries. Good bread is extremely important to the French, so freshly made baguettes will be present at most meals. A common French breakfast will include croissants, pain au chocolat, jams, honey, butter and baguette.

Each village and town in France also has its own unique cheese, wine and cured meats (charcuterie). Therefore, a meat or cheese platter at a restaurant is a must: it will include regional cheeses as well as slices of cured meats like saucisson (sausages) and jambon (smoked ham).

Most of the popular French dishes in fact originated as “peasant” food, which made use of every single ingredient and minimized waste. For example, ratatouille is a stew of vegetables, which was used as a way to utilize old vegetables. French onion soup is made from caramelized onions and beef stock, served with croutons and melted cheese, which dates back to the Romans when it was regarded as a “poor man’s dish.” Beef bourguignon is another peasant dish, now regarded as haute cuisine. It is a stew made of beef braised in red wine, beef broth and seasoned with garlic, onions, herbs and mushrooms.

Safety Considerations for LGBTQ+ visitors to France

France is often regarded as one of the most LGBTQ+ friendly countries in the world and travelers shouldn’t experience issues. The French have always maintained a laissez-faire attitude towards sexuality, i.e. not interfering in matters that may seem too personal, and respecting the privacy of others.

France was one of the first countries to legalize homosexuality in 1791 and has long had in place proactive anti-discrimination legislation for employment, gender identity and hate speech. Same-sex marriage and adoption laws were passed in 2013.

A word of caution to all travelers is to avoid some of the city suburbs, which can be dangerous. For example, the Saint Denis suburb in north Paris is known for its crime, with high rates of robbery, drug offences and murder. France is also under ongoing threats by Islamic terrorist groups.

Finally, always check local news before going to France. Strikes are common and can take place last minute or are scheduled beforehand. When they happen, they can cause large traffic jams, queues at airports and other nuisances.

LGBTQ+ Travel Tips for France

Paris has the largest LGBTQ+ scene in France, following by Nice and Marseille. Most hotels in France will be LGBTQ+ friendly and won’t mind two men/women sharing a bed. If visiting a guesthouse in a small village, attitudes may be more conservative.

There are a variety of LGBTQ+ events taking place throughout the year across France. The most famous ones to look out for include Paris Pride (Marche des Fiertés LGBT) at the end of June, the Festival des cultures LGBT film festival in Paris in January, Nice’s Lou Queernaval in February, the Salon du livre lesbian book fair in July in Paris, the “Jerk Off” queer artistic festival in September in Le Marais, Paris, and the Existrans March in Paris every October celebrating on trans and intersex people.

Gay dance parties take place each month in most cities. The most famous is the Matinée Paris, also known as SCREAM.

Stefan and Sebastien are a gay couple who met in London in 2009 and have been traveling extensively together in Asia, Latin America, North America and Europe. Stefan is originally Greek Cypriot and Sebastien is from Lyon in France. Together they have also spent a great deal of time visiting Sebastien’s homeland whether on camping trips or extensive road trips. They write about their travels on their  Nomadic Boys gay travel website.

Twenty-five centuries of history, and beautiful cycling

We offer biking vacations in several regions of France. The romantic corner of southern France known as Provence is the focus of one route, which we call The Provencal. After just a day here, you’ll understand why so many people say that biking in Provence was “the best vacation I ever had.”

Provence is so named because it was the first of the outlying provinces established by the Romans. On this trip, we’ll travel past many remnants of the old empire: from the Pont du Gard aqueduct, towering 160 feet over our heads, to a Roman arena still used for concerts and bullfights.

This is primarily a bike vacation, but with many other activities available. You’ll have opportunities for hiking and swimming, for walking tours along streets that date to the Middle Ages — and, of course, for some leisurely and memorable dinners.

Day 1: The Palace of the Popes

Gay Provence Palace de Pope

Our week begins in Avignon, a walled city settled by the Romans. Avignon reached its height in the 14th century when much of Europe was in chaos. Pope Clement V fled the anarchy of Rome and made his home here in Provence. For 68 years, Avignon served as the papal seat of seven Popes, each adding new embellishments to the palace. Today the enormous maze-like Papal Palace, sitting high on a rock, is a fascinating attraction for visitors.

Some in our group will also recognize Avignon from the childhood song:

Sur le Pont, d’Avignon, l’on y danse, l’on y danse Sur le Pont, d’Avignon, l’on y danse tous en rond

The famous Pont d’Avignon, built in 1177, still stands — partly. Washed out by floods in the 17th century, today the bridge goes only halfway across the river.

Our trip officially begins at 6:00 pm, with our reception, drinks, and orientation, followed by dinner. If you’re in town by 4:00, join us for a walking tour of Avignon’s cobblestone streets, taking in the Papal Palace, the terraced hilltop gardens adjacent to the palace, the Pont d’Avignon, and the bustling town square.

gay travel marseille

We will have our welcome dinner tonight at one of our favorite restaurants in Avignon.

Day 2: Rural French Roads: The Joy of Biking

Avignon to Arles, via the Pont du Gard

Awake to the distant tolling of a church bell, and the chirp of birds in the trees. Breakfast, and then we’re off!

Gay Provence Pont Avignon

As we cross the silvery Rhone, glance back at Avignon’s skyline: 14th-century church spires and the turrets of the Papal Palace. A couple of hours biking takes us to the Pont du Gard, a 2000-year-old Roman aqueduct considered one of the 7 surviving wonders of the ancient world. We’ll spread out an elegant picnic below this daunting structure as you climb to the top — or swim in the sparkling waters below it.

Now you’ll discover what’s so special about biking in Provence. We’ve found some wonderful backroads, winding through apricot orchards, past fields redolent with wild rosemary and thyme, or polka-dotted with cheery sunflowers. In May and June, watch for bright fields of poppies. In autumn, enjoy the excitement of the grape harvest. Some of these roads are so narrow, they feel like a driveway — except that you rarely see a car.

Gay Provence Tarascon

Next stop: Tarascon, where you’ll want to visit the crenelated castle on the Rhone, complete with moat and drawbridge. The walls inside are hung with courtly 17th-century Flemish tapestries. From the parapets, you can see castle walls across the river in Beaucaire, Tarascon’s one-time enemy. And you can sympathize with the victims of the French Revolution, who were thrown from these parapets into the thrashing waters of the Rhone.

Just another hour of biking, past meadows alive with wildflowers, takes us to the bustling city of Arles, founded in 600 B.C. The wall of our hotel, right in the center of town, dates to the 13th century. The plumbing, happily, is newer.

Relax from your ride with a wine tasting. Then, after a leisurely dinner, stroll along the river as moonlight dances on the water.

Day 3: The Legacies of Ancient Rome

The old Roman capital of Arles is today home to a lively arts community. Yet every time you walk around a corner, you find yourself face-to-face with the age of the gladiators. Indeed, few places outside Rome offer as many relics of that ancient empire as does Arles.

We spend two nights in Arles. While biking options are available, most people enjoy spending the day in town. Our guide will explore the narrow streets with you. Start with a climb to the top of the glorious Roman arena, still used for concerts and bullfights, and look out over the red-tiled roofs of Arles to the river beyond.

Gay Provence Stone Carvings

Next, visit the remains of the once-elaborate Baths, and imagine what went on here, two millennia ago! Sit amidst the broken columns of a crumbled Roman theater. Walk past the hundreds of stone sarcophagi in the Alyscamps, a burial ground since the time of Christ, and a setting for paintings by Van Gogh and Gauguin. Study the elaborate stone facade of the St. Trophime, one of southern France’s most famous churches, with Biblical stories illustrated by carved stonework.

There’s plenty more in Arles to fill your day. But in the afternoon, die-hard cyclists can pedal into the Camargue, a vast alluvial plain and wildlife preserve. The Camargue is famous for its cowboys, who ride the white horses you’ll spot in pastures; and for its distinct breed of small black bulls.

Dinner tonight is on your own. Join up with a few new friends and make a tough decision about which restaurant to visit: The restaurant next door, whose gay owners now display a rainbow flag (still a rare sight outside Paris) on their window? The Medieval, in a vaulted stone dining room that once housed an abbey? The family-run Vaccares, overlooking the town square, where the tangy aromas of fresh basil and goat cheese announce, the moment you walk in the door, that you can expect a classic Provencal dinner?

Day 4: In the Footsteps of Van Gogh

Arles to St. Remy-de-Provence

The ride to our next hotel takes us over twenty miles of road — and two millennia of history.

Gay Provence Daudet's Mill

An hour out of Arles comes to an intriguing stop: The remains of a unique double aqueduct. One channel supplied water to the Arles of antiquity; the other powered a mill that ground the Arlesian’s flour. Most likely, we’ll be the only visitors at this unique but unheralded spot. Nearby is Daudet’s Windmill, where Alphonse Daudet wrote one of France’s best-loved books.

In contrast, we’ll have plenty of company at Les Baux, one of France’s three most visited historic sites. The fortress atop this spur of rock, surrounded by limestone cliffs and thorny brushwood, claims a sordid history. Originally built by warlords who boasted descendants from Balthazar, one of the Three Wise Men, Les Baux later became a “Court of Love” inhabited by wealthy families, visiting princesses, and wandering troubadours.

Les Baux again grew bloody in the 14th century. Raymond of Turenne based an army of brigands here, invading the countryside regularly. No bake sales for this crowd: They raised money by taking hostages, who were thrown from the high cliffs at sunset if the ransom was not delivered. Cardinal Richelieu put an end to the nastiness and had Les Baux ransacked, but the sturdy walls and towers that remain offer a haunting reminder of its colorful past. Replicas of medieval weaponry – a giant catapult and battering ram – make it easier to envision that past.

Gay Provence Bike Tour

Every day we offer extra biking options for those up for it. Today’s longest option is a sweeping route along the base of the Alpilles (“little Alps”), a dramatic and jagged range of peaks running eastward from Les Baux. This route takes us through dappled-green oak forests and shimmering olive groves to the enchanting town of Eygalieres, whose sole barkeeper has become a good friend over the years.

Van Gogh fans may experience some deja vu while approaching St.-Remy-de-Provence. After cutting off his ear in Arles, the famous painter spent his last two years at an asylum here. Many of the landscapes and sights he painted are largely unchanged; you can still see them on our walking tour. Then, you can look forward to dinner at the Cafe des Arts, always a favorite for the chef’s hearty Provencal menus.

Day 5: A Crumbling Castle and a Crystalline Spring

St. Remy to L’Isle sur la Sorgue

A peaceful tree-lined road carries us from St. Remy to the vineyards of Terre Blanche. Here you’ll see how wine is made in a typical small French winery; then enjoy a wine tasting of recent vintages. Our picnic lunch is at the nearby Chapel of St. Sixte, a 13th-century chapel in a panoramic setting of olive trees set against the picturesque peaks of the Alpilles (little Alps).

Missing your Stairmaster? Then bike up to the Notre Dame de Beauregard, high on a hill over the Durance River. This is a detour; nobody has to make the climb, and perhaps nobody will. But those who do will be rewarded with sweeping views from the peaceful grounds of this church.

Provence Hot Gay Swimming

Finally, a ribbon of road too small to appear on most maps offers yet another example of biking in Provence at its best. We pass orchards, forest, old farmhouses, and a field of horses. Soon we reach the Sorgue river, where crystal-clear waters offer respite from the hot day.

Refreshed, we continue on to L’Isle sur la Sorgue, where we spend two nights in a village on an island in the rushing river Sorgue. The village is full of canals, including one with a rope swing conveniently situated over the water.

The old waterwheels of L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue once powered grain and paper mills. Now the industry has moved out, moss has taken over the old mill wheels, and the town is known as an antique center, with over 30 dealers and shops.

Day 6: Villages of Golden Stone

The Luberon

We’ll spend two nights in l’Isle-Sur-la-Sorgue. You don’t have to get on a bike at all today; if you’d like to stay in town, there’s plenty to do.

For those heading out on your bikes, the first village we come to is the history-filled Fontaine-de-Vaucluse. Here, in a small cirque below a towering cliff, the Sorgue river gushes up from an underground source that remains mysterious. Since the days of Petrarch, poets and artists have been inspired by this magical spot. You can pause at a café beside the river, overlooking a moss-covered waterwheel from a long-forgotten mill.

If you want to spend the day here instead of riding on to the Luberon hill towns, visit the new Museum of the Resistance (this region was a strong pocket of the Resistance movement during World War II). You can also take a kayaking lesson on the Sorgue, or hike along one of France’s national hiking routes.

But the Luberon beckons strongly. This magical region of dark forests, meandering streams, and stone hilltop villages are already familiar to readers of A Year in Provence. We’ve mapped out a full-day circuit taking in six villages, each with a distinct personality. If that’s too much, you can easily turn back earlier.

We begin with Gordes, a village of golden stone spilling down a hillside. Get an energy boost at the small gay-owned cafe.

Next is Roussillon, the source of the ochre used in brown dyes. There are 17 shades of ochre, boast townspeople, ranging from orange to gold, from tan to rust, and every nuance can be found amongst the homes of this handsome town. A trail winds through the golden glow of the cliffs, past towering evergreens, to such spots as the vivid orange spires known as “Needles of Fairy Glen”. A picnic spot overlooks the cliffs, and a nearby shop offers a tempting selection of foods. A chunk of goat cheese, a baguette, and a ripe pear … and you’re ready to bike on.

As we meander south, we cross a simple stone bridge. It seems like a solid but unremarkable structure until you learn that it has a name (Pont Julien) and a history — it was built by the Romans and served as a vital link on the ancient Domitian Way, for pilgrims traveling between Italy and Spain. The bridge leads us to Bonnieux, once a papal fief, now better known as the site of a memorable goat race in A Year in Provence. Clinging to the hill, this charming village feels more vertical than horizontal. Fortunately, it’s just big enough to have a well-stocked pastry shop.

Then forgotten Lacoste, known not for its alligator shirts (wrong Lacoste) but as the home of the Marquis de Sade. His chateau still perches atop the hill. Who could resist a photo op? In nearby Menerbes, we’ve got two friends: the barkeeper, and a potter whose studio in the woods produces some of the most beautiful hand crafts we’ve seen in France.

A peaceful bike route leads us through sun-drenched fields to the ruins of Oppede-le-Vieux. A short path takes us to the hilltop chapel (remodeled in the 16th century — when it was already 300 years old!) and castle walls that mark the site of an ancient feudal stronghold.

Chances are, many cyclists in our group will not get to every city. But whether you turn around after lingering over lunch in Gordes, or cover the full circuit, we’re sure of one thing: You’ll understand the magical pull of the Luberon.

Day 7: Watermills and Wildflowers

L’Isle-Sur-la-Sorgue to Avignon

It’s time to return to Avignon. This is a short biking day, so you can relax in the morning and explore the village before hitting the road.

Provence Gay Couple in Poppy Field

Today’s ride takes us past fields of red poppies, and soon we’re in Avignon. You may want to arrive early so you can tour the inside of the Papal Palace, or visit 14th-century Fort St. Andre across the river. Then get ready for a special dinner at one of Avignon’s many friendly restaurants.

Day 8: A Week to Remember

The hardest thing about our trips is saying goodbye to a wonderful group of new friends, and a charming region of France.
