Malaysia's most anticipated travel fair is set to return from Sept 30 to Oct 1.

The Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (MATTA) Fair Penang 2023 promises to be bigger and better than ever before with an array of exciting travel opportunities, exclusive deals, performances and activities – all under one roof.

The two-day fair, which will be held at Setia Spice Arena in Bayan Lepas, Penang, brings together a diverse line-up of trusted travel agents and partners from the tourism industry, all prepared to assist visitors in planning their dream vacation.

MATTA Fair Penang 2023, under the guidance of its dedicated chairman Carolyn Leong Mei Ching, plays a pivotal role in fostering collaboration and excellence within the tourism industry, connecting travellers with trusted partners and unforgettable experiences.

Leong is also the chief executive officer of Angel Tours Sdn Bhd.

All travel agents and participants of the fair are members of MATTA and the venue’s spacious layout ensures that visitors can explore a wide array of booths, exhibits and travel offerings for the ultimate travel experience.

In addition to hosting trusted travel partners, this year’s fair is spicing things up with the exciting addition of international street food delights.

MATTA Fair Penang set to thrill travel enthusiasts with bigger, better event

THE upcoming MATTA Fair Penang at the Setia SPICE Arena is set to be bigger and better with the increased participation of exhibitors in the travel industry.

Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (MATTA) Penang Chapter chairman Carolyn Leong said the two-day fair, on Sept 30 and Oct 1, would be held at the Arena and the Concourse of the building.

“It will be bigger than last year. As of now, 261 booths have been taken up. A total of 153 booths were taken up last year.

“We are expecting about 30,000 visitors thronging the fair, which can generate between RM25 million and RM30 million in sales transactions,” she told a media conference at Komtar today.

Leong said MATTA Penang Chapter, as part of its corporate social responsibility (CSR), would also be sponsoring booths for two charity organisations – the St Nicholas Home and the Eden Handicap Service Centre – for them to showcase and provide their services at the fair.

As for the travel package buyers, Leong said attractive ‘Buyers Draw’ prizes await them.

“There are more than 60 prizes worth over RM200,000 in value to be won!

“The prizes include flight tickets by renowned airlines, cruises and hotel stays,” she said, adding that the grand prize is a Business Class return ticket to Tokyo, Japan, courtesy of Malaysia Airlines.

Malaysia Airlines is the official airline for the upcoming MATTA Fair Penang.

Leong said MATTA Fair Penang would also be promoting local destinations besides international travel.

“The fair is a gateway to countless possibilities, and it offers a diverse spectrum of the travel industry,” she said.

Penang Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai said the fair would mark a significant milestone for the state’s tourism industry.

“I understand that many travel agents and MATTA members nationwide have chosen to take part in MATTA Fair Penang.

“The fair offers a unique opportunity for everyone to foster and explore meaningful collaborations.

“MATTA Fair Penang caters to all, whether you are a travel agent looking for exciting packages to promote, or a traveller seeking your next adventure.

“Take advantage of this fair to secure fantastic deals, discover exciting destinations and meet with tour operators and hoteliers,” he said.

Also present were Penang Global Tourism chief executive officer Ooi Chok Yan, Malaysia Airlines northern region commercial and sales area manager Lisa Wong, AirAsia northern region director Kenneth Tan, Malaysian Association of Hotels vice-president Datuk Khoo Boo Lim, and tourism industry key players.

The fair will be held from 10am to 9pm.

MATTA Fair Penang 2024 kicks off with 300 booths

G EORGE TOWN: The two-day Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (MATTA) Fair Penang 2024 has opened its doors at Setia SPICE Arena here.

Featuring some 300 booths promoting international and domestic travel packages, the event includes various offerings from the travel industry including airlines, financial institutions, travel agents, hoteliers, associations, theme parks, wellness spas and other small businesses.

Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, who launched the event, said the influx of tourists is integral to the state's economy, providing employment opportunities, business ventures, and bolstering its overall economic growth.

"MATTA has played a pivotal role in promoting our country, particularly Penang, as a premier tourism destination.

"I am pleased to announce the maiden voyage of two prestigious cruise liners, Costa Deliziosa and Serenade of the Seas, each capable of accommodating up to 2,500 passengers.

"This significant milestone underscores the strategic importance of Penang's Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal and the allure of Penang as a tourism hub for Malaysia," he said.

Chow added that Penang's accessibility continues to expand, with direct flights from 15 international cities, including Guangzhou, Xiamen, Hong Kong, Dubai, Singapore, Bangkok, Phuket, Medan, Jakarta, Surabaya, Banda Acheh, Ho Chi Minh City, Doha, Haikou, and Shanghai.

"Penang boasts eight domestic flight routes, with 17 airlines operating direct flights, including MAS, Singapore Airlines, Qatar Airways, Fly Dubai, Starlux, Xiamen Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Juneyao Airlines, among others.

"As a result, the airport has recently recorded a 5% increase in passengers movement from 313,000 to 328,000 from February to March this year," he added.

MATTA Penang chapter chairman Carolyn Leong said a sales revenue of RM40mil is expected at this year's fair compared to the RM33mil recorded last year.

"MATTA is committed to aligning with the aspirations of state tourism, and we look forward to continuing our collaborative efforts in promoting tourism and cultural enrichment.

"Each year, we strive to enhance our international participation by inviting more foreign embassies to showcase their cultural richness and new destinations at the fair. This serves as a dynamic platform

for cultural exchange and exploration of exciting travel opportunities.

"In introducing our esteemed travel exhibitors, we aim to enrich the fair experience by offering additional attractions and fostering closer connections between nations," she said.

The highlight of the travel fair will be the lucky draw prizes which will see visitors winning air tickets from flydubai, Xiamen Airlines, Singapore Airlines, Scoot, China Airlines, Starlux Airlines, and Air Arabia to destinations like Dubai, Xiamen, Singapore, Bangkok, Hong Kong and Taiwan.

Visitors who buy any domestic packages by securing a RM300 deposit per person will stand a chance to take part in the lucky draw to win an air ticket to a domestic destination while anyone who buys an international holiday package with a deposit of RM1,000 will be eligible to win an air ticket to an international destination.

Besides air tickets, visitors who take part in the lucky draws also stand a chance to win hotel stays, staycations, tour vouchers and admission tickets

The fair, held today and tomorrow (April 27 and 28) will be open from 10am to 9pm.

Tourism Malaysia pledges support for Matta Fair 2023

The Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (MATTA) is pleased to announce that Tourism Malaysia has continued to support the MATTA Fair, which will take place March 17-19, 2023.

 As a result, it will contribute to boost the number of international visitors to Malaysia and strengthen our domestic tourism.

Located at Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC), Kuala Lumpur – Tourism Malaysia Pavilion occupies 46 booths at Ground Level (Level 1). There are also participation from States Tourism Organisations (STO) such as Kedah, Penang, Perak, Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, Melaka, Johor, Pahang, Terengganu, Sarawak and Sabah will also participate in this year MATTA Fair indicating that the states are pushing their domestic tourist offerings vigorously.

Malaysia is expecting 15.6 million tourist arrivals in 2023 with receipts of RM47.6 billion. Tourism Malaysia is ramping up their promotional efforts by participating in the largest consumer fair to attract more holidaymakers and showcase exciting local destinations through our diversity of culture and heritage.

MATTA Fair’s partnership with Tourism Malaysia is considered a pivotal source of economic growth which serves as a catalyst for tourism development and continues to be one of the largest contributors to the national account. Similarly, the participation from Tourism Malaysia creates more opportunities to promote Malaysia as a top-of-mind tourist destination since our country has much more to offer.

This year, Tourism Malaysia is coming back with a Nature & Adventure theme, and we anticipate generating sales of RM1.5 million as the fair provides great opportunities for consumers to find holiday packages and theme park admission tickets at attractive prices. The Tourism Malaysia Pavilion will showcase up to 46 booths from all states, as well as several activities including quizzes and guitar performances. Visitors will have the opportunity to redeem Tourism Malaysia merchandise with the purchase of tourism packages worth RM500.00 and above.

“This fair aligns with our ‘Inilah Masanya, Cuti-Cuti Malaysia’ campaign, which encourages Malaysians to travel domestically and support the domestic tourism industry. Tourism Malaysia aims to inspire more tourism activity across various states in Malaysia and contribute to local economic growth,” said Dato’ Zainuddin Abdul Wahab, Director General of Tourism Malaysia.

This collaboration between MATTA Fair and Tourism Malaysia will produce greater outcomes in the future that will propel the tourism sector back to pre-pandemic levels and create more opportunities to serve the industry market.

 It is free admission to the Fair and it is open from 10am-9pm for the three days, Friday to Sunday. To reiterate, shuttle service to MITEC will be provided from KL Sentral and Sunway Putra Mall.

SOME 300 booths promoting international and domestic travel packages at the Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (MATTA) Fair Penang 2024 were all snapped up even before the registration date closed on April 15.

The fair's organising chairman for the third consecutive year, Carolyn Leong, said this indicated the promising growth of the state's tourism industry.

"The booths have all been taken up even before the registration date closed.

"This shows the confidence the travel agents have in the fair, which also augurs well for the state's efforts in promoting local tourism," she said recently, adding that the tourism industry is picking up again and travellers are eager to resume exploring the world.

She said the fair will not only feature travel agents offering attractive packages to international destinations but also domestic travel agents who will be promoting Penang to Penangites and holidaymakers alike from the northern region states such as Kedah and Perak.

"Therefore, to encourage domestic players, MATTA Penang is subsidising 50% of the booth price for them.

"Besides featuring Penang's attractions and charm as a heritage city, the state's tourism booth will also highlight attractions and holiday spots in other parts of Penang such as Balik Pulau's greenery and durian orchards as well as other activities found on mainland Penang," she added.

The fair that will be held at the Setia SPICE Arena on April 27 and 28, is expected to draw some 35,000 visitors.

The booths set up at the arena and concourse areas will feature both domestic and international exhibitors representing a diverse range from the travel industry including airlines, financial institutions, travel agents, hoteliers, associations, theme parks, wellness spas and other small businesses.

Leong said a sales revenue of RM40mil is expected at this year's fair compared to the RM33mil recorded last year.

"The fair will be a one-stop venue for everyone's travel needs offering fantastic deals, be it domestic or international packages.

"We have Malaysian Airlines as our official airline and RHB Bank has come in too," said Leong, who is also chief executive officer (CEO) of Angel Tours Sdn Bhd.

Attractive prizes await

The highlight of the travel fair will be the lucky draw prizes which will see visitors winning air tickets from flydubai, Xiamen Airlines, Singapore Airlines, Scoot, China Airlines, Starlux Airlines, and Air Arabia to destinations like Dubai, Xiamen, Singapore, Bangkok, Hong Kong and Taiwan.

Visitors who buy any domestic packages by securing a RM300 deposit per person will stand a chance to take part in the lucky draw to win an air ticket to a domestic destination while anyone who buys an international holiday package with a deposit of RM1,000 will be eligible to win an air ticket to an international destination.

“This is due to the increasing number of direct flights between Penang and these destinations, and vice-versa.

“We are also seeing a high demand for Australia, especially Western Australia such as Perth,” she said.

As for domestic packages, Leong said Kota Kinabalu in Sabah and Kuching in Sarawak remain the most popular places for local travellers.

The fair on both days will be held from 10am to 9pm.
