Just back - Celebrity Flora - Galapagos / Machu Picchu 16 night trip

Just back from the 16 night Celebrity Flora Galapagos / Machu Picchu 16 night trip.  Here's a few notes and some packing tips.

We were on the 16 night package.  Note if you book cruise only and not a package - transportation, charter flight, park entry, other flights, etc may not be included.  Also - this was for Flora, so some things may be different on the other 2 ships.

We left a day early for the trip (which officially started on a Saturday with a tour of Quito).

we flew out on a Thursday and arrived in Quito around 11:30 PM.  Celebrity picked us up and transferred us to the JW Marriott, which is the hotel where you stay if you have booked the 10 /11 or 16 night package.  We booked the extra night on our own.  You can have Celebrity tie your personal reservation to the one they make for you so you won't have to actually change rooms.  If you want to book your own room of the same type - just be sure which type of room you are booked into by Celebrity (it will depend on the type of cabin you have on the ship).  We had an infinite veranda on the Flora, so we had a deluxe room in the hotel.  If you are in a Royal or Penthouse on the ship, you get a pretty big suite in the hotel.  Your TA can help you with this or the Galapagos desk can help you - Celebrity Galapagos desk is 1-888-751-9303.  If you are arriving a day or more early - you will also need to make sure they know about it so they can pick you up early.

We did a private tour on Friday on our own - the Telerifico cable car, and some city sights and foodie stops (small bites) and an artisan/craft market.  It was great.  The tour guide was named Gabriella through Tours by Locals.  she arranged things not to overlap with what Celebrity does on their tour on Saturday.

Saturday - The Celebrity tour started.  They split everyone into groups of 10 - 16ish people each with their own bus and guide and "guard".  Not really a guard, but someone to watch from behind to make sure everyone is together and keep lookout for pickpockets, I think.  The tour went Itchimbia park, with great views over the town, including a great photo opportunity in a Quito sign, old town Quito, the Equator museum - which has some really interesting presentations, a church, and a few other things.   After some time back at the hotel, there is a dinner provided at La Gloria restaurant in town and they will transport you to/from the restaurant.  You will need to take your CHECKED luggage downstairs sometime Saturday night (around 10PM) and you don't get it back until it is in your cabin on the ship.  So you pack up everything you don't need after this time that's in your checked luggage.  It is to do with agriculture inspection (seeds/nuts/fruit is forbidden - you will get more info).  You can keep carry on luggage and your toiletries/electronics/valuables - those will be hand checked at Baltra.

Sunday - depart for the Galapagos.  You will be given your boarding passes for a private charter flight to Baltra.  You CAN take your liquids on the plane.  There are some weight restrictions 44 pounds for checked, 22 for carry on, but these are not super stict.  They said they can be a little over.  It is a regular plane, like a 737 or something similar.  You are seated with one empty seat in the middle.  They serve a lunch, but then there is an embarkation lunch onboard, so you may want to skip the plane meal.  If you have priority pass, you can go into the airline lounge in Baltra.  At some point, we are also given the Galapagos park entry tickets and exit tickets.

After arrival in Baltra, you go through an agriculture inspection for hand luggage.  You board a bus to the ship, and get on tenders.  Then you are onboard!

There's a safety briefing, distribution of snorkel equipment (mask, fins, shortie wetsuit - don't worry - they WILL have your size) and embarkation lunch.  Lots going on.

I won't go into detail on each day - but just a summary.

Each morning is a breakfast buffet with hot and cold items, cereal, cold cuts, yogurt, and an egg/omelet station.   They also have some pastry set up in the bar area where you can get that very early (before breakfast starts).

Every day lunch is served as a buffet in the dining room which changes theme (Italian, Mexican, Asian for example) or outside as a grill with chicken/burgers.

Every night dinner is served in the dining room with a menu that changes (posted each day) or outside as dinner under the stars with the same menu.

Each evening there is a briefing explaining the next day's excursions.  There are excursions in the morning after breakfast and then again after lunch.  Nobody is allowed on the islands from noon to 2PM or from 6PM to 6AM(Galapagos regulations).   You sign up for the excursions you want at this time.  Don't worry about it "selling out" - its not a problem.

We did snorkeling, kayaking, tender rides and walking.  The long walks are not very long, and the advanced deep water snorkels are not too difficult.

If you are in doubt about anything - just talk with the guides about it and they can help you decide if you can do it.

Is there a lot of downtime?  Yes and no.  You start pretty early - but there is about 3 hours in the middle of the day.  lunch is pretty quick because it is a buffet or a burger/chicken from the grill.  And you may want a shower and to change from morning to afternoon.  But it all goes pretty quick.  When you get back from the afternoon, there is time to change/clean up before dinner, and head to the bar to have a drink before the presentation starts.  Also - you will make some ship friends pretty quickly, especially if you were on the package and assigned to one of the busses - so you'll be meeting up with them for lunch or drinks.  So there's not a lot of "down" time.

One thing to note - you can do a bridge tour.  Sign up for this at guest relations.  The ship must be "anchored" to do the tour.  Be sure to sign up early if you want to do it.   You can take all the pictures you want, sit in the captain's chair, meet the captain if he's there and ask him questions (he was on our tour), etc.   (NOTE - I know it doesn't typically anchor, but I mean it can't be in motion, it must be still)

Flora - ship is really nice.  It is in dry dock now for a refresh of interior and of course all the maintenance stuff.  Food was good - with exception of the beef, staff were really nice, service good.  The naturalists were all fantastic.  Just go with the understanding it is a SMALL ship with food regulations in place due to restrictions set by the Galapagos.  You won't find 10 choices of appetizer and 10 choices of main course.   The beef must be raised in the (I think they said the islands??) - everyone that had it said it was tough and not very good.

Disembark day - you will be out of your room and onto the tender ride to the airport.  You are given boarding passes and a bus ticket for the bus back to the airport.  Don't forget to have your park exit ticket handy.  Once you get back to the airport, you need that.   You will take the charter flight back Quito.  We were going on to Lima for Machu Picchu and we had a late flight to Lima so we were provided a day room at the EB Hotel in Quito.

Packing Tips

I would suggest

2 swimsuits (sometimes there are opportunities for morning and afternoon water activities)

2 rashguards

water shoes

then pack as light as you can

You do get to do laundry twice, with up to 20 items for each person

I did not take hiking boots only tennis shoes and I was fine.  However, I only took one pair of tennis shoes.  I did tear the side of them on a lava rock.  They were still usable, but it made me think what if they had been damaged more.  There's really nowhere to obtain more shoes.  So just consider bringing 2 pairs of shoes.  Next time I do something like this, if there is no opportunity to purchase shoes, I will bring 2 pairs.

Dressing for dinner - some people dressed in the same types of clothes they were for touring the islands, some people dressed up.  Just do what you are comfortable doing.

If you are going to Machu Picchu - you start out staying at the Westin Lima.  That's the first 2 nights.  You also come back there before you fly home.  You CAN leave a bag there so you don't have to take it along on the Machu Picchu portion.

I'll skip the Machu Picchu portion since it's not "cruise related" - but it was fantastic - highly recommend doing that as well.

Excellent!  Thanks for posting.   😊

Just an example of excursions

20231023_155638.jpg

In this example, for "Morning" - you could do either option 1 or option 2, then return to the ship and grab snorkel gear then go for the deep water snorkel at 10:30.

Thanks for posting this, so much great information. I’m eager to do this itinerary it’s just a matter of deciding which ship to do it on. Are you given life vests for the snorkeling? The advanced snorkeling excursion, is it advanced because of rough water or what specifically? If you went snorkeling was there a lot of marine life to see?

Ciaranaman

Thank you for posting this.  Lots of excellent info!  And great pics!  Did you see a lot of wildlife?  I, for one, would love to see more pics if you care to share.

Thank you for posting your recommendations! They will definitely come in handy when we start preparing for our Flora cruise in early December. One question. How was the internet service onboard? I plan on posting to a Live From thread to include uploading photos while we’re on our cruise.

They did have some type of special snorkel vests, which were different than the life jackets we wore on the tenders.  I saw a few people using them.  The"advanced deep water" snorkels meant that you entered the water from the tender and you must swim or tread water the entire time.  You can't touch the floor like if you walk off the beach.  The current may be strong as well.  Of course, the tender boats are near, so if you get tired you can signal for them that you want to get back on.  We saw lots of different fish, sea turtles, some manta rays, one shark, starfish, sea lions and penguins!  Well worth doing.  I have some video we did with a go pro.  I will try to post some soon.

Internet seemed fine.  We were able to use it without issue.  I was able to post a few pics to Instagram without issue.

We saw quite a bit.  It's a lot of wildlife, but also a lot of the same wildlife if that makes sense.  Like lots of iguanas, lots of tortoises, lots of sea lions.

thank you for the review, sounds like an awesome trip!

Thanks for posting.  We are on the Xpedition in February.  I know the ship board activities will be different, but I appreciate your information about Quito and the Galapagos in general.  Your pictures are gorgeous!

I was really glad to see the 22lb limit on the carry on. Over the phone I had been told 15lb and I was getting worried. I have an under seat bag that will carry my cameras, lenses and my CPAP.

I am trying to avoid putting my CPAP in its own case and have 2 carry on bags. Leaving it home is an option I may take though.

Thank you for a great review with some very helpful tips.  My wife and I will be on the Flora in 2024 doing this same itinerary and your write up will come in handy!

Thanks for the report. We are B2B on the Flora, Nov 5 & 12, followed by Machu Picchu. (Assuming it happens as planned, Celebrity's system can't seem to handle this, looks like we are on the Flora and at MP on the 12. We'll double check when we board on the 5th that all is well.) Interesting about the dry dock, I was not aware.

you should be getting back onboard with the boat in pristine condition!  (I mean, it already was, but it should be like new now)

Great pictures. I am curious what you used for lenses. Currently I am leaning towards my 400 max zoom lens, but would love to take my 300 instead. The 300 is over a 1 lb lighter than the 400. I can make it work, but I had shoulder surgery and working with the heavy lens is still a challenge. Hoping by the trip the shoulder will be good enough.

The photos here are just from my phone, a Samsung S20.  My husband took a Sony A7RII with a g master 100-400 lens.  He used a special strap he found for the camera.  You might like to check this out.

Aloha Shuba_Lover,

Thanks for the in depth review.

We are leaving for our cruise in a week.  I am confused by the information out there on insect spray and sunblock.  Are there any restrictions on either insect spray or sunblock?

Day 1 Thursday

Quito arrival.

On the first day of your journey, you’ll be greeted at the airport by a Celebrity Cruises ® representative and transferred to the JW Marriott hotel. Enjoy free time to relax and settle in.

Day 2 Friday

Breakfast is served at the hotel. During your guided tour of the capital of Ecuador, situated at an altitude of 9,350 feet, you’ll stand on the equatorial line at the Intiñan Solar Museum, and marvel at the monastery of San Francisco and la Compañia Church. Your Tour Director will escort you throughout your Quito stay, and serve as your personal concierge. Lunch with a spectacular view of the city, and enjoy a welcome dinner at a local gourmet restaurant.

Day 3 Saturday - AM

Quito/baltra island.

After breakfast, transfer to the airport for your flight to Baltra, Galapagos. During World War II, Baltra served as a U.S. military base protecting the Panama Canal from enemy attack. Now the cactus-strewn landscapes of Baltra are home to the region’s main airport and where you will meet the ship. From the airport, it is just a short bus and zodiac ride to the ship for embarkation.

Day 3 Saturday

Black turtle cove, santa cruz.

A Zodiac ride into Black Turtle Cove, one of the most beautiful sites in the Galapagos, takes you through a complex maze of tranquil saltwater inlets surrounded by mangroves. Once inside the cove, quietly explore the area looking for sea turtles, several species of rays, and sharks. It is also a nesting site for brown pelicans, egrets, and herons. Excursion options: Zodiac.

Day 4 Sunday

Rabida island.

A small island south of Santiago, Rabida is best known for its red sand and eroded volcanic landscape. A nesting colony of pelicans makes its home here, along with sea lions, finches, mockingbirds, Galapagos Hawks, and some seabirds. With good conditions, the snorkeling can be excellent. Excursion options: Zodiac, walk, swim, kayak and snorkel.

Egas Port, Santiago

With its black sand beach, coastal tide pools, and blue-water grottos, this stop offers a wonderful taste of the Galapagos and the opportunity to see shore birds, Galapagos Hawks, sea lions, marine iguanas, and Galapagos fur seals. Sea lions, colorful tropical fish, and sea turtles are often seen while snorkeling (conditions permitting). Excursion options: walk, swimming, snorkel.

Day 5 Monday

Tagus cove, isabela island.

Historically an anchorage for pirates and whalers, this site offers a breathtaking view of Isabela, its volcanoes, and a saltwater lagoon. Along the shore, seabirds, penguins, sea lions, sea turtles, and nesting flightless cormorants can often be found. Excursion options: Zodiac, walk, snorkeling and kayak.

Espinoza Point, Fernandina Island

Fernandina is the youngest island in the Galapagos and, as Darwin wrote, it is “covered with immense deluges of black naked lava.” Along with its extraordinary black lava rocks, this point of land hosts the largest colony of marine iguanas in the Archipelago, along with sea lions and a nesting site for flightless cormorants. Excursion options: Walk, snorkel, hike.

Day 6 Tuesday

Urvina bay, isabela island.

Composed of five merged volcanoes, this is the largest island in the Galapagos and the most recently active, the latest eruption having occurred at Wolf Volcano in 2015. Here you will see large land iguanas, finches, and if lucky, a giant tortoise or two. In 1954, magma from one of the island’s volcanoes caused part of the bay to be uplifted some 6 meters, allowing you to walk through the remains of what was once a thriving underwater reef. Excursion options: Walk, hike, snorkel, swim.

Vicente Roca Point, Isabela Island

The half-collapsed remains of an ancient volcano make for a spectacular setting at this site. Awe-inspiring cliffs, blue waters, and wildlife create a Zodiac ride to remember as you search for sea turtles, penguins, fur seals, the flightless cormorant, marine iguanas, marine mammals, and the oddly shaped form of the elusive sunfish. Excursion options: zodiac, deep water snorkel.

Day 7 Wednesday

Bartolomé island.

Bartolomé Island offers one of the region’s most photographed views, and is a spectacular geological setting. Its barren moon-like volcanic landscapes, spatter cones, and pinnacle rock make for a unique stop. It is also home to the endemic Galapagos penguin and provides an excellent opportunity for snorkeling. Excursion options: hike up some 368 stairs “To the Top” of the volcano, a Zodiac ride, and an optional beach swim or snorkel.

Las Bachas, Santa Cruz Island

Las Bachas Beach is located in the north of Santa Cruz Island. Its soft, white sand is derived from remains of coral, shells and algae making it a favorite nesting site for sea turtles. Behind the beach there is a small brackish lagoon, where it is possible to observe flamingos and other coastal birds, such as black-necked stilts and whimbrels. Excursion options: Walk, swim, and snorkel.

Daphne Island

Daphne is a satellite volcanic cone located north of Santa Cruz Island. The crater floor is an important breeding site for blue-footed boobies. The cliff shore of the island is home for sea lions, pelicans, blue-footed boobies, and tropic birds which can be observed during the circumnavigation of the island.

Day 8 Thursday

El barranco, genovesa.

El Barranco, also known as Prince Phillip’s Steps, is a steep stairway that leads up through a seabird colony full of Nazca and Red-footed Boobies. Once at the plateau, the trail continues inland and passes more nesting booby colonies in the thin Palo Santo forest. Keep an eye out for Galapagos doves, mockingbirds, storm petrels, and a short-eared lava owl if you are lucky. Excursion options: Hike, zodiac, deep water snorkel.

Discover Lima c

Join our expert resident guide to discover the Colonial-era landmarks, colorful neighborhoods and vibrant city life of the capital. Begin in Plaza Mayor and admire the Cathedral; built in the 18 th century, this handsome landmark is the oldest on the Square. Right next door, the Archbishop’s Palace is easily recognized by its grand wooden balcony. Just a few blocks away, the historic Church and Convent of San Francisco is perhaps the most impressive of Lima’s Colonial monuments. Behind its striking yellow and white façade, you’ll find a beautifully decorated interior with glazed ceramic tiles from Spain and carved ceilings that show a strong Moorish influence.   After lunch, visit the highly regarded Larco Museum; its superb collection of pre-Columbian artifacts is a great introduction to the many ancient sites you’ll explore in the coming days. Next up is a guided stroll through Barranco, a charming city neighborhood that has attracted writers and artists since the early 20 th century. Today, it remains a vibrant cultural enclave with thriving studios, galleries and cafes.  Visit MATE, a pioneering contemporary art museum founded by Mario Testino, the Peruvian photographer famed for his evocative portraits of cultural icons including Diana, Princess of Wales, Madonna and Gwyneth Paltrow. In addition to a permanent collection of Testino’s works, MATE features rotating exhibits devoted to established and emerging contemporary artists from South America and around the world. Dine tonight at one of our favorite Lima restaurants.  Meals B+L+D

Fly to Cuzco

Belmond Palacio Nazarenas - Cuzco, Peru

After an early breakfast, you’ll be escorted to the airport for your included flight to Cuzco , the ancient capital of the Inca. On arrival, you’ll begin your exploration of the city with the handsome Colonial landmarks that surround the Plaza de Armas - including the Cathedral that was completed in 1654 after nearly a century of construction.   The day’s sightseeing is highlighted by a visit to the Casa Concha Museum. Here in a Colonial mansion built on the foundations of an ancient Inca Palace, you’ll be enthralled by meticulously presented exhibits - including the many artifacts excavated at Machu Picchu by Hiram Bingham; after having spent the last hundred years at Yale University, this vast collection was just repatriated to Peru in 2011. Then tour the colonial landmarks of the main plaza as well at the cathedral.  Enjoy an overnight at the luxurious  Belmond Palacio Nazarenas . Your specially oxygenated room will help to ensure your comfort at this high-mountain elevation.  Meals B

Discover Cuzco In Depth

This morning, you’ll ascend with our expert Andean guide into the mountain peaks outside of town. Perched here overlooking the terra cotta roofs of Cuzco are the magnificent ruins of Sacsayhuaman. Built in the 1400’s by the Inca Emperor Pachacútec, the massive limestone blocks of this venerated complex were cut with such precision that they fit together without mortar like the interlocking pieces of a jigsaw puzzle! With some individual stones towering more than 10 feet tall and weighing several hundreds of tons, Sacsayhuaman is a monumental achievement of architecture and masonry.  Continue on to Manos de la Comunidad. With a mission to preserve the traditional textile arts of the region, you’ll see native weavers from these different communities as they create beautiful textiles using techniques that have been passed down for generations. You’ll also see the indigenous camelids that are the source for the wool that is used for weaving: Alpacas have thick wool that is ideal for sweaters and blankets while vicunas are small and delicate creatures with very fine wool; Llamas and guanacos also roam around Manos de la Comunidad.    Your sightseeing ends at the Temple of the Sun and Convent of Santo Domingo. Regarded as one of South America’s most architecturally fascinating sites, it also demonstrates the fascinating layers of history here in Cuzco - where a sacred structure of one culture, the Convent, literally sits atop and practically encloses another, the Inca-built Temple of the Sun! Through the Sacred Valley to Machu Picchu

Belmond Sanctuary Lodge - Machu Picchu, Peru

A two-day visit to Machu Picchu with Yaki, our expert Andean Trip Leader, begins with an unforgettable rail journey through the Urubamba River Valley, a timeless region of snow-capped Andean peaks, quiet villages and terraced fields that have been cultivated for centuries.   On arrival in the beguiling town of Aguas Calientes, you’ll board a coach for the 30-minute ride up the switchback mountain road that brings you to the entrance to Machu Picchu. The fabled Lost City of the Inca is certainly the single greatest landmark in Peru – and perhaps all of South America. Indeed, little can be written here that would do justice to the breathtaking grandeur of its mountain setting, the enigmatic aura that permeate this ancient citadel, and the unforgettable experience of standing among these ancient stones. And accompanied by our Yaki’s illuminating insight, your visit will bring to life the ancient civilization that built Machu Picchu.   Tonight, you’ll be one of the privileged few to stay at the singular  Belmond Sanctuary Lodge , the only hotel here on the mountaintop adjacent to the Lost City of the Inca.  Meals B+L+D

Sunrise at Machu Picchu + Back to Cuzco by Rail

You’ll want to arise early today to take advantage of our lodge’s one-of-a-kind setting. As the only hotel next to Machu Picchu, you’ll be among the first to enter the site this morning. At this early hour, the day-visitors from Cuzco and the Sacred Valley have yet to arrive and even those who spent the night in the town below will still be making the 30-minute ascent. With fewer people and the softer light of morning just breaking over the mountain peaks, this early-morning visit to Machu Picchu is one of the most memorable travel experiences you will ever have.   In the afternoon, you’ll make the return rail journey through the Sacred Valley back to Cuzco. On arrival, you’ll be escorted once again to the luxurious  Belmond Palacio Nazarenas  where your specially oxygenated room promises a comfortable final night in Peru.  Meals B+L

Onward to Quito

Casa Gangotena - Quito, Ecuador

After breakfast, you’ll be escorted to the airport for your included international flight to Ecuador. Upon arrival in the capital, you’ll be met and escorted to the  Casa Gangotena, a Relaix & Chateaux luxury hotel in the historic heart of this World Heritage city.  Meals B+D

Excursion to Otavalo

Today’s full-day excursion starts with a magnificent morning drive along the Avenue of Volcanoes, a route that takes you north of Quito into a stunning region of towering snow-capped mountains, including the perfectly cone-shaped silhouette of Cotopaxi, an active volcano, and the equally impressive, slightly more rugged peak of Cayambe. At the Quitsato Sundial, set on the equator, you can stand with one foot in the Northern Hemisphere and the other one firmly planted in the Southern Hemisphere.   Your journey continues to the beguiling Andean town of Otavalo. In the main square, you’ll join other visitors, local residents, and indigenous peoples who come from the surrounding mountain villages to sell, barter and shop in one of South America’s most celebrated markets. Many are dressed in traditional Andean garb and the variety of products for sale is astounding – local farm produce, woven rugs, jewelry, clothing, stone carvings, paintings, musical instruments, household products, leather goods and pottery are among the many items you’ll find!   Also today, you’ll spend time on a family-run rose farm, to see and learn how the region’s mountain climate, so close to the equator, has proven ideal for the cultivation of numerous varieties of roses and hybrids. Indeed, Ecuador is one of the world’s leading exporters of roses and other cut flowers. Before making the return journey to Quito, you’ll stop at an authentic high-mountain hacienda for a delightful lunch of traditional Ecuadorean fare.  Meals B+L

The History + Culture of Quito

Today’s expertly guided sightseeing tour through the city’s finely preserved Old Town includes the Metropolitan Cathedral that was built over the course of nearly 300 years between 1562 and the early 19 th  century. Nearby stands the Church and Convent of San Francisco; considered to be one of the oldest churches in Latin America, built just one month after the arrival of the Spanish, it stands upon the foundations of an ancient Inca temple. Inside you will admire a uniquely ornamented ceiling with Moorish design elements and a beautiful Baroque altar.   With unique and personal insight from our engaging resident guide, your city tour will also illuminate fascinating facets of the local culture. You’ll discover thriving studios, workshops and boutiques. Spend time with some of the area’s resident artisans including the owner of a hat shop who learned her millinery skills from her father; for 60 years, and a chocolate maker whose sweets are heavenly! Embark your Galapagos voyage

You’ll be escorted to the airport this morning for your included flight to Baltra Island in the center of the archipelago. On arrival, cross the narrow Itabaca Channel by ferry to Santa Cruz Island and sit down to lunch at a local restaurant. Then join our expert naturalist for an exciting excursion into the Santa Cruz Highlands. Observe giant tortoises in their natural habitat, learn about the unique ecosystem of this pristine nature reserve, and discover its unusual lava tube formations.   Then travel to Puerto Ayora to board our Galapagos vessel, the intimate La Pinta . You’ll have time to settle in to your Upper Deck outside stateroom before joining fellow passengers for dinner. This evening’s briefing with our expert shipboard naturalists offers an entertaining and informative introduction to your upcoming voyage.  Meals B+L+D

Eden Islet + Chinese Hat Islet

Today’s excursions explore the diversity of two small and uninhabited isles. In the morning, a guided expedition in our maneuverable panga boats takes you along the shores of Eden Islet, where you might observe Nazca and blue footed boobies diving into the sea for food, reef sharks and frigatebirds. Conditions permitting, this is also a great place to take advantage of our free snorkeling gear and glass bottom boat. With its cinder cones, tuff cones and semi-eroded lava flows, Eden Islet also offers a chance to learn more about the volcanic origins of the Galapagos Islands.   After lunch, a guided nature walk on Chinese Hat Islet offers a chance to espy marine iguanas, Galapagos hawks, sea lions and Galapagos penguins. There’s also terrific snorkeling here amongst white-tipped reef sharks and penguins, or you might choose to explore these waters by sea kayak, glass-bottom boat or panga.  Meals B+L+D

Bartolomé + Santiago Islands

After breakfast, join our naturalists ashore for an invigorating walk to the summit of Bartolomé Island. A network of wooden stairs and boardwalks protects the fragile environment, including small lava lizards and a species of cactus found only in the Galapagos. Once at the top, you’ll be rewarded with one of the most picturesque and memorable vistas of your Galapagos adventure! Later, a panga boat excursion around Pinnacle Rock offers a great opportunity to photograph this iconic natural formation. Before returning to La Pinta for lunch, you’ll have time to relax on the beach, snorkel or ride in the glass-bottom boat.   In the afternoon, you’ll step ashore at Sullivan Bay on the southeastern coast of Santiago Island. There was a major eruption here only 100 years ago, and the sinuous Pāhoehoe lava formations look almost like still-flowing molten lava. There may not be much wildlife here, but the barren, other-worldly landscape makes for remarkable photography, and this is a great place to observe and experience the volcanic origins of the Galapagos archipelago.  In addition, the lovely coral sand beach of Sullivan Bay is ideal for swimming and snorkeling.  Meals B+L+D

Two Landings on Genovesa Island

Genovesa is celebrated for its remarkable birdlife including magnificent frigatebirds, red-footed boobies, swallow-tailed and lava gulls, and yellow-crowned herons. This morning, you’ll step ashore with our naturalists at Darwin Bay. From the small sand and coral beach, an easy trail winds its way along a tidal lagoon, offering myriad opportunities to observe and learn about the island’s birdlife. After your guided walk, you can hike along a more challenging lava trail to a look-out point, go for a swim or snorkel in the bay. The more adventurous can paddle or snorkel along the cliffs at the edge of the bay.   After lunch back onboard, you’ll explore Prince Philip’s Steps - named for Prince Philip who visited the Galapagos in 1964 aboard the Royal Yacht Britannia . As you approach the lava cliffs in our panga boats, keep your eyes peeled for animals using the crevices for shelter and for red-billed tropicbirds flying overhead. You’ll make landing at the base of a staircase that leads to the top of the cliffs where a mile-long path will take us to the other side of this small island. Along the way, you’ll have a chance to espy large colonies of Nazca boobies, frigatebirds, storm petrels and the elusive short-eared owl.  Meals B+L+D

Fly to the Mainland for Departure

After breakfast, you’ll disembark on Baltra Island and transfer to the airport for your included flight to either Guayaquil or Quito - where you can connect to your homeward flight. Or if you wish, you can extend your stay with us in Ecuador.  Meals B

Add the Nazca Lines

3 days from $1,799

This easy-to-add Pre-Tour includes roundtrip transportation from Lima, 2 nights hotel, daily breakfast and complete sightseeing

Upon arrival at the airport, you'll be warmly greeted and escorted to the Wyndham Airport Hotel.

From Lima to Paracas

Travel overland with your private car and guide through the arid and captivating coastal landscapes to Paracas. Then take to the skies in a small plane for a birds-eye view of the Nazca Lines, one of the world’s most intriguing and enduring mysteries. Etched into the dry Earth below and enduring for nearly 1,500 years, these enormous line drawings cover the arid plain below you. Among the enigmatic glyphs that will capture your attention and fire your imagination are a spider, condor, fish and monkey. Back on the ground, you’ll check in to the stylish Hotel Paracas Luxury Collection - our inviting resort overlooking the Bay of Paracas.  Meals B

Discover the Ballestas Islands + Return to Lima

After checking out from your resort, you’ll embark on a sightseeing expedition off the Pacific Coast. Reaching the rugged Ballestas Islands, part of Peru’s largest coastal wildlife sanctuary, your boat will navigate around the islands rocky shoreline, punctuated by arches and caves. As sea conditions permit, we should be able to get close enough to observe the islands’ inhabitants - including raucous herds of sea lions and a variety of indigenous birds including Guanay cormorants, Peruvian boobies, and enormous colonies of Peruvian pelicans. Humboldt penguins can also be espied in these waters. As we make our way back to the mainland, be on the lookout for a huge 3-pronged geoglyph that stretches close to 500 feet long and more than 150 feet wide. Etched into an arid hill facing the Pacific, its origins are still debated; some link it to the Nazca Lines while others propose that it may have served as a navigational guide for ancient sailors. In the afternoon, journey back in your private car to Lima and check in to the lovely JW Marriott Hotel to begin your tour.  Meals B

Quito, Ecuador

Cruise Embarkation, Baltra Island - During World War II, Baltra served as a U.S. military base protecting the Panama Canal from enemy attack. Now the cactus-strewn landscapes of Baltra are home to the region's main airport and where you will be greeted by Celebrity staff. After just a short bus and zodiac ride you will be aboard the ship. Your luggage will be delivered straight to your stateroom, giving you the opportunity to explore the ship and your home for the week.

North Seymour Island - is a small island just north of Baltra. North Seymour is a small island just north of Baltra. It is home to the largest colony of frigate birds in the Galapagos. While keeping an eye out for male frigate birds trying to impress potential mates with an inflated red neck pouch, you may see blue-footed boobies dancing in a timeless courtship ritual. Sea lions and large land iguanas also roam about this rocky terrain. Excursion options: Walk, deep-water snorkel.

Excursion options include a guided long, rocky walk, zodiac ride and short easy walk, or simply just a scenic zodiac tour along the coast to view wildlife and the geology of the area. Experienced snorkelers will also have an option to do a deep water snorkel at this site. This is a dry landing.

South Plaza & Santa Fe

South Plaza Island - One of two islands off Santa Cruz, South Plaza was born of upheaval, uplifted during a geologic event. The rocky island is strewn with prickly pear cactus and home to land iguanas, marine iguanas, and a colony of sea lions. Our excursion here is a short walk to view wildlife, flora, and geology.

Santa Fe Island - Begin with a wet landing on the small beach in Barrington Bay. Large numbers of sea lions are found on the beaches and can often be seen surfing in the waves. Some of the island's endemic species include massive Santa Fe Opuntia cactus, the Galapagos Hawk, Galapagos Snake, rice rats, finches, and the Galapagos Mockingbird. Hike past saltbush where Galapagos hawks and Santa Fe land iguanas tend to roam. Keep an eye out for sea lions and the occasional sea turtles or ray. Excursion options: Walk, swim, kayak, Zodiac.

Punta Pitt Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, San Cristobal

Punta Pitt, San Cristobal Island - After disembarking onto the small green sand beach, hike up to a plateau, where the view and landscape are so spectacular it is well worth the effort. A steep gully leads up the cliff to a breeding ground for all three varieties of boobies: Red-footed, Blue-footed and Nazca. It's the only place in the Galapagos where you can see all three species nesting together. Excursions options: Hike, kayak, snorkel, Zodiac.

Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, San Cristobal Island - Visit the small waterfront town of Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, the administrative capital of the islands. Excursion options: a tour of a local interpretation center and time for shopping or a fast-paced long walk to view scenic vistas, followed by a visit to the interpretation center.

Cormorant Point & Bahia Post Office

Post Office Bay, Floreana Island - Rich in history, this site is home to the post office barrel established in about 1793, where pirates, buccaneers, whalers and others could leave their mail to be picked up by outbound ships. The tradition continues today, as visitors leave addressed postcards in the barrel and sort through left mail to deliver at home.

Cormorant Point, Floreana Island - Floreana was the first capital of the Galapagos, and where Charles Darwin met the islands' Governor. Its small brackish lagoon is often home to flamingos, stilts, and white-cheeked pintail ducks, and one of its beaches is a highly used nesting site for sea turtles. Check out the green-hued sand where you land! Excursion options include a relatively short walk to the lagoon and sea turtle nesting beach, and optional snorkeling and swimming at the landing beach.

Punta Morena & Urvina Bay

Elizabeth Bay, Isabela Island - Elizabeth Bay is one of the furthest points in the Galapagos visited on our cruise. Enter a sheltered cove accessible only by Zodiac. It is a wonderful and secluded mangrove ecosystem that is a refuge, resting, and feeding site for sea turtles, rays, blue-footed boobies, flightless cormorants, penguins, pelicans, lava herons, and more. Excursion options: Zodiac.

Moreno Point, Isabela Island Along this beautiful rocky shore, a field of hardened black lava flows is pockmarked by shallow pools, which are home to shorebirds and flamingos. The mangrove-lined shore also provides a chance to see marine iguanas, sea turtles, stingrays, sharks, penguins, and the flightless cormorant. Excursion options include a long walk and zodiac ride, or an extended zodiac ride. This is a dry landing.

Puerto Ayora, Santa Cruz

Puerto Ayora, Santa Cruz Island - This is the main population center of the islands, home to the National Park Tortoise Breeding Center and the Charles Darwin Research Station. After Darwin's studies and surveys, the Galapagos Archipelago remained untouched except for occasional landings for water and meager supplies mustered from the uninhabited islands. Many tortoises were taken for food and oil.

In 1930, an expedition from the US arrived to create a wildlife sanctuary for the entire archipelago, and finally, in 1935, the first laws were passed to protect these islands. In 1959, the Ecuadorian government declared the Galapagos a national park, the catalyst needed to promote scientific research, restoration, and preservation of the ecosystem.

You will have the opportunity to take a bus ride to the highlands to observe giant tortoises in the wild and walk through a lava tunnel. Optional time for shopping will be available. Excursion options: Tortoise-breeding Center/Charles Darwin Center, Highlands.

Gardner Bay & Punta Suarez, Espanola Island

Gardner Bay, Espanola Island - Located on the northeastern side of the island, Gardner Bay has a beautiful long white sandy beach perfect for relaxing and enjoying the beauty of the area. In the water, sea turtles, rays, colorful tropical fish, sea lions and maybe even a white-tip reef shark may be seen. If you happen to visit here between October and December, you will find Green Sea Turtles mating just off shore. Gardner Bay is home to some of the most inquisitive mockingbirds in the Galapagos. Excursion options: beach walking, swimming, or a deep-water snorkel for experienced snorkelers.

Suarez Point, Espanola Island - Espanola is the oldest island in the Galapagos and home to an abundance of wildlife. At this site, visitors can expect to see sea lions, Galapagos Hawks, marine iguanas, and both blue-footed and Nazca boobies. Excursion options: long, rocky walk to look for Waved Albatrosses (March to January). They perform one of the most spectacular courtship rituals in the animal world. The second part of the walk is to observe an impressive blowhole that spews water like a towering geyser, which can reach 70 feet in the air. Optional shorter walk is also available.

During your meal, delight in stunning equestrian Peruvian Paso horse entertainment and marinera music. Dine and overnight at Tambo del Inca Luxury Collection.

The small village of Ollantaytambo is one of the best surviving examples of Inca city planning and layout. The narrow cobblestone streets have been continuously inhabited since the 13th century. Looming over the village is the Fortress of Ollantaytambo , spectacular Inca ruins that mark one of the few places where the Spanish conquistadors lost a major battle. As a highly effective fortress, Ollantaytambo also served as a ceremonial center at the top of terracing. Walls here, like at Sacsayhuaman, were precisely cut and laid.

Day 14 - Machu Picchu, Cusco

Machu Picchu

After a morning breakfast at the hotel, you'll depart for Machu Picchu on the Vistadome train from the Tambo del Inca station. Lunch will be served at the Sanctuary Lodge in Machu Picchu.

Koricancha - This extraordinarily crafted Temple of the Sun was the most sumptuous temple in the Inca Empire. Some 4,000 priests and their attendants once lived within its confines. Coricancha also served as the main astronomical observatory for the Incas.

Sacsayhuaman - These amazingly well preserved ruins overlooking Cucso, a testament to Incan architectural skill.
