What Are the Reasons Why Your Dodge Journey Won’t Start?

The reasons your Dodge Journey won’t start are a damaged car battery, a failing alternator, a defective starter, a corroded battery, and a clogged gasoline filter. Other possible causes include a faulty pump, a blown fuse, rodent damage, and bad spark plugs.

– Damaged Car Battery

Your car won’t start if you have a damaged or dead battery. If you have a dead battery, you won’t hear any sounds when you use the key normally inside the ignition. In most cases, weather-related issues drain a car battery. If the car battery is affected by extreme heat or cold, it can destroy or kill the battery and prevent your vehicle from starting.

Once you suspect the battery may be damaged or dead, you should confirm by testing the battery. Use a multimeter or hydrometer to check the DC voltage of the battery. If the reading is less than 1 volt for a 9-volt battery, it means the battery is dead.

– Failing Alternator

If you have inspected the battery and discovered that it isn’t the source of the problem, the next component to check is the alternator. The alternator is an integral component of the vehicle’s internal combustion engine that charges the battery while the engine runs. The alternator converts chemical energy to electrical energy for charging and replenishing the vehicle’s battery and other electrical components.

Thus, if the alternator stops working, the battery will eventually die. You can test if your vehicle’s alternator works using a multimeter to measure the battery’s voltage while the engine runs. If the multimeter gives a low voltage, the alternator is not working correctly.

– Defective Starter

Another reason why your car will refuse to start is if the starter is defective. The starter is the component that turns the engine over when you use the ignition. Although the average lifespan of a starter motor is between 100,000 and 150,000 miles, it can break down if the vehicle has been used for a long time.

You can test if your starter is in good condition by using a multimeter to measure the voltage of the starter with the key in the start position. If the multimeter reads a low voltage, the starter is failing and should be fixed soon. Also, you can detect a bad starter if the key makes a clicking sound when you turn it to start the engine.

– Blocked Fuel Filter

The gasoline filter is the vehicle component that prevents dirt and rust particles from mixing with the fuel so they don’t damage the engine. Although the filter doesn’t wear out like other mechanical parts, it can become clogged by dirt, dust, or airborne particles. When these materials block the filter, its permeability will drastically reduce. Thus, the fuel pressure will reduce as well.

While the engine can still work if the gasoline filter is clogged, there is a stage where the filter gets too dirty and the engine won’t function correctly. A dirty filter often causes ignition difficulty because it depletes the fuel supply going into the engine. In some cases, the blocked gasoline filter will cause the engine not to start when the key is turned in the ignition.

– Defective Fuel Pump

The fuel pump of your Dodge vehicle is responsible for conveying the right amount of fuel to the engine at a certain pressure. So, if the pump fails, the engine will not start. One of the common causes of pump failure is wear and contamination. Also, if a power contact is broken or the pump lever is damaged, the pump will malfunction.

However, before the pump stops working, it will give you signs. Symptoms like the engine breaking down regularly, the car experiencing difficulty starting, and the engine jerking indicate that you have a failing pump, which you should fix immediately.

– Corroded Battery

If there is corrosion on your battery’s contacts, it can lead to loss of contact and reduced current flow, affecting the engine’s operation. The engine will no longer start properly when a battery has become corroded. Corrosion on the battery can prevent the engine from starting when the key is turned in the ignition.

To test if a corroded battery is causing the vehicle’s starting problems, you should investigate the battery’s contacts. Next, raise the rubber covers on the battery terminals and check for signs of corrosion. If you see white or silvery-green deposits on the terminals, that strongly indicates corrosion.

– Defective Remote Car Starter Battery

If your Dodge Journey uses a push start/stop button to turn on the ignition and is not starting, the problem may be due to a weak key fob battery. A weak battery renders the key fob inoperative and cannot start the vehicle. More so, if the battery is weak, the door will stop opening or closing at the push of a button.

Nevertheless, you can still start the vehicle because the battery only transmits the signal for locking and unlocking. The car must be started manually using the key, and the same applies to the doors.

– Damaged Fuse

Sometimes, a damaged fuse could be why your Dodge Durango is not starting when you turn the key. If one or more fuse inside the box is blown, the engine will not start. This is because fuses limit the electrical current flowing through wires to protect specific components. In other words, the fuse box protects the electronics within the vehicle.

If the fuse has a problem, it could affect the ignition relay, which is located inside the fuse box. The ignition relay transfers electricity from the battery to the ignition components so that you can start the car quickly, so it would help if you inspected all the fuses inside the fuse box for signs of damage.

– Bad Spark Plugs

Spark plugs provide the spark of electricity that ignites the combustion needed to start the vehicle. If the spark plugs are inoperative or damaged , the car will not start. Typically, the spark plugs are not affected by a defect. Instead, the problem lies with the plug connections on the ignition system.

If any plug connections come loose, the vehicle will not start, and the only remedy is to tighten it. Defective or failed spark plugs will prevent the car from starting, so they should be fixed.

How To Fix Your Dodge Journey’s Starting Problem?

You can fix your Dodge Journey’s starting problem by changing the alternator, installing a new battery, cleaning corrosion from the battery, and changing the starter. Other remedies to the problem are cleaning the gasoline filter, replacing the filter, and installing new spark plugs.

– Change the Alternator

To fix a defective alternator, discard it and replace it with a new one. First, disconnect the battery and loosen the bolts that hold the alternator in place to replace the failing alternator. Take out the old alternator and install the new unit in its place. Then reconnect the battery and start the ignition to check if the alternator works correctly.

– Install a New Battery

If your car battery is dead, jumpstarting won’t work. Your only option is replacing it with a new battery. You can carry out the replacement yourself by using a socket wrench set and screwdriver. First, locate the battery under your vehicle’s hood to perform this operation.

After that, disconnect the negative and positive cables from the battery’s terminals. While doing this, ensure both terminals don’t touch each other because it will cause an electrical spark. Next, gently remove the old battery then install the new unit by connecting the cables to the battery. Test the battery by starting the engine.

– Remove Corrosion From the Battery

To fix a corroded battery, you will have to remove the corrosion from the battery. This will require you to remove the poles from the battery. The first step is to unplug the black cable from the negative pole and remove the red positive pole cable. After removing the battery, you can start cleaning the terminals.

As a precaution, when using metal pliers to remove a cable from the pole clamp, ensure you don’t touch any other vehicle parts. Once you clean the terminals, reconnect the battery and test it.

– Install New Spark Plugs

You’ll need to replace bad spark plugs with new ones for the engine to start. To replace the spark plug, first remove the plug wire and the coil-on-plug (COP) attached to the spark plug end. Next, unscrew the plug with a spark plug socket. Put the new spark plug in place and reconnect the plug wires and COP. Start the engine to test the spark plug.

– Change the Starter Motor

If the starter is the reason why your vehicle is not starting, then you should replace it with a new one. You will need a socket set and ratchet to remove the starter from the car. The first step is disconnecting the negative battery cable so you won’t experience any electrical shock while working on the starter. Then locate the starter, usually near the front of the engine on the passenger side.

After locating the starter, use the socket to loosen the two bolts holding it. Then carefully pull out the old starter from the engine and install the new starter in its place. Retighten the bolts to secure the starter and reconnect the negative battery cable. Test the new starter by turning the key in the ignition.

– Fix the Gasoline Filter

You can fix a dirty gasoline filter by cleaning it. To clean the filter, you must first locate it because the location varies for different vehicles. Also, ensure no fuel is exposed to the spray by using a clamp on the hose. Place a container under the filter to catch all the remaining fuel.

Insert a hose inside the detached filter and spray it with a special liquid so everything inside flows out. After spraying, dry the filter for about an hour, then install it back into position. However, cleaning is no longer possible if the filter is fully clogged. You will have to replace it.

Frequently Asked Question

– can a dodge journey be manually started.

Yes, a Dodge Journey can be manually started if the fob is dead. Turn the fob over to reveal a latch at the top back of the fob. Slide the latch to the side to remove the key and use the key you removed to unlock the door.

Dodge Journey dead battery symptoms, causes, and how to jump start

Dodge Journey needs a healthy 12 volt battery for normal operation of the vehicle. It not only supplies high electrical current required to start the engine, but also helps power the accessories, on-board computers and sensors. So, what happens when this battery becomes too weak?

Dodge Journey

The most common symptoms of dead battery in Dodge Journey are slow engine crank, no start, dim lights, flickering dashboard lights and clicking noises when trying to start the engine. The most common causes of dead battery in Journey are internal degradation of the battery due to old age, and bad alternator – but can also be caused by parasitic draw, and if the vehicle has been parked for a long time.

1. Slow engine crank

The 12 volt battery is a vital component of the starting system in Dodge Journey. It powers the starter motor that turns over the engine. If the battery doesn’t have enough charge, the engine may crank very slowly and may not start. Slow crank is usually the first symptom of a dying battery.

Symptom: Slow engine crank sound

2. clicking noise and no start.

The leading cause of clicking noise and no start in Dodge Journey is weak battery. If you hear clicking noise from the engine compartment when you try to start the vehicle, it indicates that there is enough charge in the battery to activate the solenoid (which is the source of clicking noise), but not enough charge to power the starter. The starter motor requires high electric current to turn over the engine, whereas lights and wipers take very little current to operate – so don’t rule out weak battery even if electrical accessories work normally in your Journey.

3. Flickering dashboard lights

Another symptom of weak battery in Journey is flickering dashboard lights and/or rapid clicking noise when you try to start the engine. If there isn’t enough charge in the battery to power the starter motor, and you try to crank the engine, the battery voltage will get so low that it can’t properly power the lights, accessories and of-course the starter. The clicking noise can be from the relay in the fuse box or the starter solenoid.

Symptom: Rapid clicking sound

How to test the battery in journey.

The easiest method to check the 12v battery in Journey is by measuring the voltage with a multimeter. A healthy battery should have 12.6 volts or more when fully charged. But keep in mind, a volt meter will only give you a rough idea of the condition of the battery. Sometimes a battery showing over 12.4 volts may not be able to supply enough current to crank the engine.

Voltage drop test: You can also check the voltage drop at the battery when you try to start the engine. If the voltage drops too much, below 10 volts, your battery doesn’t have enough charge to start the engine. This can happen due to internal degradation of the battery, if the vehicle has been sitting for a long time, or if the alternator in your Journey has malfunctioned and not charging the battery properly.

How to jump start Journey

To rule out dead battery, your best course of action is to jump start your Journey using jumper cables and a healthy battery from another vehicle, or using a battery booster if available.

Requirements: The engine of both the vehicles should be off, and the transmission in Park.

  • Connect the red cable to the positive terminal of the dead battery in Journey.
  • Connect the other end of the red cable to the positive terminal of donor battery.
  • Connect the black cable to the negative terminal of donor battery.
  • Finally connect the other end of the black cable to any bare unpainted metal part of the body or engine of your Journey.
  • Start your Journey.
  • Remove the cables in the reverse order.

Warning: There is always a risk of burning up the alternator or other electrical components if the engine of the donor battery vehicle is running during jump start. Therefore it is recommended to keep the engine of the donor vehicle off when jump starting your Journey.

Replace the dead battery

If the battery in your Journey has become too weak and loses its charge quickly after recharging it by running the engine for some time or with a battery charger, its time to replace the old battery. Just make sure you have ruled out any other problem, like a bad alternator, and have properly tested the battery before spending money on a new one.

2016 dodge journey no power at all

  • Then disconnect the positive terminal of the battery.
  • Remove all the bolts from the tie-down and take out the battery.
  • Clean the disconnected terminals and the surface under the battery.
  • Place in the new battery.
  • Screw in all the bolts and tighten them down. Make sure the battery is snug.
  • Then connect the negative terminal of the battery.
  • Apply some silicone grease on the terminals to prevent corrosion.

Causes of dead battery

Internal degradation of the battery.

The leading cause of dead battery in Dodge Journey is internal degradation due to old age. Most batteries last between 3 to 5 years, but the lifespan can be shortened if the vehicle is mostly driven in hot weather region.

Faulty alternator

The alternator in Journey converts mechanical energy from the engine to electricity that not only powers all the on-board accessories, but also charges the battery. If the alternator develops a fault and stops generating electricity, the entire electrical load of the vehicle will shift to the battery. This drains out the battery quickly as it is no longer getting charged by the alternator. You don’t need to replace the battery in this case.

2016 dodge journey no power at all

Alternators can fail at any time, but generally they last over 100,000 miles. The easiest method to check the alternator is by measuring the voltage at the battery terminals when the engine is running.

2016 dodge journey no power at all

Parasitic draw

If your Journey continues to draw excessive electric current from the battery after you turn off the ignition, it is called parasitic draw. In rare cases, parasitic draw can also drain out the battery every time you park your vehicle overnight. Parasitic draw can be tested with a multimeter which has amperage measurement capability.

Parked for a long time

Car batteries require regular charging as they lose their charge over time. If your Journey has been sitting in the garage for months, the battery will eventually drain out and you won’t be able to start the engine. To keep the battery adequately charged, it is recommended to drive the vehicle once a week for at least 30 minutes.

Poor battery connection can cause dead battery symptoms

It is possible the battery in your Dodge Journey is in good health, but the current flow is interrupted due to a loose electrical connection, a damaged wire, or corrosion on the battery terminals. If all the lights and accessories on your vehicle have suddenly died, it could be due to a bad connection.

Corrosion on battery terminals

Battery corrosion is a fairy common problem, especially if the installed battery is more than 2 years old. Corrosion occurs when the battery acid reacts with the metal terminals which can lead to loss of contact and reduced current flow. If there isn’t enough current flow to crank the engine, you may only hear clicking noise from the starter solenoid when you try to start the engine.

Check battery terminals

To know if your Journey starting problems are from dirty battery terminals, you need to investigate them. Lift the plastic covers over the terminals and check for any signs of corrosion. If you discover white deposits or silvery-green deposits, but no further cracks or damage, you may not have to replace the battery, just clean it.

2016 dodge journey no power at all

Clean the battery terminals

Quick cleaning: There is a neat little trick with which you can clean corrosion on the battery terminals of your Journey in under a minute. Pour hot boiling water over the corroded terminals and the corrosion will just melt away. Do one terminal at a time and don’t let water puddle on the top of the battery touch both terminals at the same time, this can short the battery.

Thorough cleaning: To thoroughly clean the battery in your Dodge Journey, you have to remove the terminal cables first, which requires no special knowledge, just a little concentration, as the order is very important. First remove the black cable from the negative terminal using a wrench or a plier. Next you can unplug the red positive terminal cable. Be careful not to touch both terminals with your metal tool, it will be one expensive mistake. Once the battery has been removed from the circuit, you can start cleaning the corroded battery with sandpaper or wire brush. After cleaning, reconnect the cables in reverse order, positive first, then negative.

Poor ground connection can cause dead battery symptoms

What is a ground connection.

The negative terminal of the battery is connected to the body/chassis of Journey, called a ground connection. The engine also requires a ground connection to function, but the way the engine is mounted, it does not allow the electric current to flow between the engine and the body (due to non-conductive rubber insulated engine mounts). For this purpose, a ground strap/wire is used to connect the engine and the chassis.

What happens when the ground connection goes bad?

If the ground connection of the chassis or the engine goes bad in your Journey due to rust or corrosion, you will face all sorts of electrical issues, including clicking noises and no start problem. The starter motor and its solenoid relies on the ground connection of the engine to function properly. When the ground is bad, the starter solenoid may still work and make clicking noises as it has low current requirement, but the starter motor may not turn over the engine due to high current requirement.

How to check if the ground connection is good?

You can check the quality of the ground connection in Journey by doing a conductivity test between the negative terminal of the battery and the engine. Take a multimeter, change its settings to ohms symbol. Touch one probe to the negative terminal of the battery, and the other probe to any exposed metal part of the engine. The reading should be at or very close to zero ohms. Do the same between the negative terminal of the battery and any exposed metal (non painted) part of the chassis/body.

Inspect and clean the ground connections

If the conductivity test fails, check the condition of the ground connections in your Journey. Inspect the connectors of the ground cables (battery to body, body to engine) for any signs of rust or corrosion. Clean the contacts with a sandpaper.

If your Dodge Journey is hard to start, has slow crank, or makes clicking noise when you try to start the engine, it most probably is due to dead battery. But before replacing the battery, you should rule out any other problems that may cause the dead battery symptoms, e.g. bad alternator, loose battery connection, or poor ground connection. Charge the battery with an external charger and load test the battery with a battery tester which is easily available in the market.

You obviously did not know where the battery is located on a Dodge Journey of any year. FYI it is located in front of the driver side wheel and you can not get to the terminals unless you take the wheel off and remove the plastic wheel well material. There are terminals under the hood for jump starting.

Dodge Journey Won’t Accelerate: Causes + How to Fix

If your Dodge Journey won’t accelerate, that is a serious cause for concern.

If your check engine light is on, get a code scanner and see what trouble codes are stored in the PCM (powertrain control module).  They can provide valuable insight as to what the problem may be and help you narrow down the problem.

Dodge Journey P0302

There’s a lot of information here, and it can be overwhelming. We’ve put a quick information table to help you determine why your Journey won’t accelerate.

Check for Codes

“Dodge

Most problems significant enough to make your Dodge Journey not accelerate will cause a diagnostic trouble code. If your vehicle’s check engine light is on, there’s valuable info stored in there.

Start with whatever parts of the vehicle the codes indicate are having a problem.

Quick Info Table

There are so many reasons your Journey won’t accelerate. We’ve made a table to help you try and narrow them down before reading through all of this.

As you can see above, there are only a few reasons why a vehicle won’t accelerate at all. The check engine light should almost always accompany those.

Dodge Journey Won’t Accelerate Causes

If your Journey doesn’t accelerate, but the RPMs go up, it’s usually not an engine-related issue.  Somehow, your engine’s power is not making it to the rear wheels.  This is typically an issue related to the transmission

Here are the most common cause of acceleration with the RPMs going up:

You should be able to hear it, and it’ll likely be paired with a code such as P0300 or P030X (where X is the misfiring cylinder).

A few things can cause an engine to misfire. But, more often than not, it’s going to be the spark plugs or coil packs that are the culprit.  A misfire is the most common reason your Dodge Journey isn’t accelerating.

Dodge Journey won't accelerate

Here are some common misfire causes.

  • Spark Plugs – Even under the best conditions, spark plugs will eventually need to be replaced.  Oil on the plugs, the wrong or bad spark plugs can cause a misfire.
  • Coil Packs – Your ignition coil, or coil packs, create the spark and send it to the spark plug at just the right time for optimal power and efficiency.  When one has gone bad, they’ll usually cause your Journey to accelerate slowly, idle rough, and will hurt fuel mileage.
  • Plug Wires –  Spark plug wires are not as common as they used to be, but your particular model of Journey may have them, so they are on the list.  A spark plug wire goes bad when it can no longer transfer the spark from the coil pack or distributor properly.

While the ignition system is the most likely reason a vehicle won’t accelerate as fast as it should. It should still move some though, if it’s the cause.

Low Transmission Fluid

2016 dodge journey no power at all

The engine should sound completely normal. Look for a red puddle under where you’ve been parking your vehicle.

If your Journey is too low on transmission fluid, it will no longer be able to transfer power to the wheels.  The power goes to the torque converter, and that’s the end of the line.

You should check the transmission fluid immediately.  This is a common cause of not accelerating, but the RPM rises.

Before the transmission ran out of fluid, you should have noticed the RPM going up too fast for the speed you were going, indicating that the transmission fluid was low.

Here’s how to detect low transmission fluid signs .

Torque Converter

2016 dodge journey no power at all

There may be a noise that accompanies a bad torque converter. Unfortunately, there’s rarely a code.

The torque converter is responsible for taking the engine’s mechanical power and converting it into hydraulic energy.

If the torque converter has gone bad, it will no longer be able to do this job.  No power can get to the transmission.

Bad Torque Converter vs. Bad Transmission

Broken Axle or Driveshaft

2016 dodge journey no power at all

Depending on which side of the axle you broke, you may hear a slapping sound when you put the vehicle in gear. A quick visual inspection will confirm it’s broken.

If you’ve broken a drive/axle shaft, your Dodge Journey’s transmission can no longer turn the wheels.

If this were the case, there would not be any movement whatsoever from the vehicle.

Bad Transmission

2016 dodge journey no power at all

Slipping usually starts gradually. P0700 is a common code if it’s an electrical issue related to the transmission.

If something has gone wrong in the transmission, your Journey may not be able to accelerate anymore, or it’ll.  If it can no longer shift, it could be caused by a solenoid/valve body that has gone bad, clutch packs, debris, and much more.

Clutch Slipping

If your vehicle has a manual transmission, a clutch failure can keep it from accelerating.

Although the manual transmission is going away, if you have a Journey equipped with one, a bad clutch can cause it not to accelerate.

The clutch is responsible for directly connecting the engine (via the flywheel) and the transmission (via the input shaft).

When the clutch can’t hold on to the flywheel anymore, it’ll start to slip.  Typically, slipping starts at highway speed and under heavy acceleration.

It only gets worse as the clutch disk slips and burns up. It’ll be able to handle less and less torque.  Eventually, it’ll only move in first gear or not at all.

Clogged Catalytic Converter

2016 dodge journey no power at all

A clogged catalytic converter will likely appear with a code such as P0420 or P0430 .

Your Journey’s exhaust must pass through the catalytic converter to get to the tailpipe.  It is possible for the converter to clog.  This can happen if a rich air/fuel mixture has run through it for a while.  When it is blocked, your Journey will struggle to accelerate.

You may also notice that it has a “top speed” much lower than you would need to drive on the highway.  This happens when the catalytic converter is almost full and the engine is choking on its exhaust.

It’ll “bog” after a certain speed.  Maybe it’ll drive 20 miles an hour just fine, but after that, it just doesn’t want to accelerate whatsoever.  This can also be a sign that it’s not getting enough fuel.

2016 dodge journey no power at all

The engine should act starved when more fuel is needed. Codes P0087 or P0230 through P0232 may appear.

A malfunctioning fuel pump can cause a menagerie of strange symptoms. The engine may have trouble starting. Then, once started, it’ll die if you try to give it gas.

  • The vehicle may die when you give it gas.
  • It may hesitate or stumble when you need more power.
  • Your Dodge Journey may be jerking when accelerating .

Bad Fuel Filter

2016 dodge journey no power at all

The symptoms of a bad fuel filter are exactly the same as a faulty fuel pump.

A bad fuel filter will not let enough fuel into the Journey’s fuel injection system to support operation above a certain demand on the engine.  It just can’t provide the fuel pressure.

If this is the case, like the catalytic converter, it’ll feel like everything is fine until you hit a certain speed, and then it will bog down.

The only way to know if a fuel filter is bad VS a bad fuel pump is to test the fuel pressure coming in and out of your vehicle’s fuel filter.

Dodge Journey: Bad Fuel Filter → Symptoms and Diagnosis

Timing Chain or Belt

2016 dodge journey no power at all

If your Journey’s timing chain has jumped, you’ll likely get code P0300 and might even be able to hear it slapping around under the timing cover.

The timing chain (or belt) keeps the upper valve train synced with the crankshaft.  This is vital for spark timing.  The timing belt may have skipped if the timing is off a little and the engine still runs.  If it has jumped too much, the Journey may not even fire.

Air Intake Issues

2016 dodge journey no power at all

It may appear with code P0171 or P0100-P0104

Vacuum Leak

Your Journey’s engine creates a vacuum as it runs.  Too much vacuum creates a situation where the air is not coming in and being read by the MAF sensor, which causes the vehicle to run wrong and not accelerate.

MAF or MAP Sensor

The MAF sensor also may not be functioning correctly.  If this is the case, it’ll almost always throw a trouble code.

You can look at the MAF sensor and see if it’s dirty. Auto parts stores sell dedicated MAF sensor cleaners. Make sure to use it and follow the instructions on the bottle. If you clean it with anything else, it can damage the MAF Sensor.

Dodge Journey: Bad MAF Sensor → Symptoms and Causes

Exhaust Issues

2016 dodge journey no power at all

Your Dodge Journey’s exhaust system has three functions. It releases exhaust gasses behind the vehicle, scrubs pollutants via the catalytic converter, and helps the engine adjust the air/fuel mixture via O2 sensors.

The oxygen sensors meter the exhaust as it exits the combustion chamber. If one is faulty, it can change the air-fuel ratio to the point that your Journey won’t accelerate well.

Exhaust Pipe Crimped

Have you driven your vehicle over something that scraped the bottom hard? Your Journey’s exhaust pipe may have gotten pinched. When pinched, exhaust gasses can’t escape, and your vehicle won’t accelerate.

Throttle Position Sensor

2016 dodge journey no power at all

Likely to appear with P0121 or a similar TPS code.

There are two types of throttle systems. They are drive-by-wire and drive-by cable. Most modern vehicles have drive-by-wire, where the throttle is controlled by a throttle position sensor attached to the gas pedal.

When the throttle position sensor fails, it will either put your Dodge Journey into limp mode or won’t respond.

very satisfied so far, speedy service and customer friendly, This is my 3rd one in the past year, the last 2 were purchased from a Florida re-builder and both times they failed within 3 months. there prices were higher and there turn around time between 6 to 9 weeks.

A local shop wanted to charge me $4,500 to install a new TIPM, I removed mine and sent it in to Module Masters. They repaired it and had it back to me in a week and I was able to install it and get back on the road!

After reinstalling my Module Master rebuilt TIPM, everything electrical is working correctly!! Thanks so much for a quality job!

I'm back with another issue!

Miss me? Just kidding. So this morning i went to start my 2016 dodge journey sxt with 88,000kms on it, and the battery was completely dead. Battery is only 6 months old. Charged it right up and tested for parasitic draw. When testing, I quickly saw the 500 milliamp draw. When removing the ABS Valve fuse, the draw shot down to 60 milliamps.

Any ideas on what this could be? In my head I'm thinking TIPM, and PCM. Both are expensive naturally.

Need to do more trouble shooting.  How long was the ignition off when you got your load reading?

Are you having any other odd symptoms?  I think tipm was more of an issue with early model Journeys.

What brand of battery was put in 6 months ago. Is it at least 600 cold cranking amps.

Ignition was off for an hour. No other odd symptoms. Walmart brand battery. Don't remember the CCA but I remember I did my research back then and ensured it was more than the stock battery at the time. Battery itself was tested at a shop and it passed. Alternator fine as well. Not going to start blaming battery when I see it clear as day that abs fuse is drawing 500 milliamps, when the norm is 50 - 80. (Last I heard, dodge spec was 35 milliamps).

Ok I am completely ignorant on this so now am curious. I assume the ABS valve should only be active while vehicle is in operation and wheels turning ? Meaning the draw is due to a circuit staying closed ?

Like

From my very limited knowledge in this area, what I can recall is that the TIPM controls what electronics go to sleep when the vehicle is turned off. If I pull that abs fuse, and the draw goes down, but then reinsert the fuse, the draw stays down. If I restart the draw test, the fuse is back to drawing 500 milliamps.

My buddy is a mechanic at a local shop and said he changed a lot of TIPM, as well as PCM and when I did the research, there's another board with over 100 posts about the issue I'm facing. Some were narrowed down to the Bluetooth module, and some to the radio, while others was the PCM and others the TIPM.

Edit: acronym mistakes, because it's 7:50am

  • OhareFred and 2late4u

My f150 had a weird parasitic draw issue a few years ago. The go to sleep function can be tricky, on the Ford the drivers door has to be closed to trigger the full shut down sequence.  The 2009 F150 generation had a lot of dead battery issues.

It can be hard to isolate where the draw is from without measuring right at the fuse contacts. Although I think abs would be isolated there could be problems with pedal brake light switch draining battery. Search site there was a recent posting about it.  Battery measurement will be entire fuse box. I have a fuse draw circuit tester which is good for isolating issues. Maybe borrow one, tipm or pcm are expensive  items.

Wallmart batteries not that bad in my experience, I have used them before.

Hey John, where did you get that mx201?  I’d like to look into it....?

Yeah I saw the mention about the brake pedal switch. If it were that, wouldn't the brake lights be on while the vehicle is turned off?

That fuse draw circuit tester looks like a great tool to test with, but since I already know that pulling that specific fuse reduces the draw, I'd say that using that tool would be redundant in my case. I'll probably still end up buying one however lol.

19 hours ago, OhareFred said: Hey John, where did you get that mx201?  I’d like to look into it....?

We have a place that is like your Harbour Freight but smaller with less selection. It’s called Princess Auto, lots of surplus stuff generally good prices on cheaper China tools.  I think I paid around $35 around 4 yrs ago for it. Great trouble shooting tool.

The guy with brake light switch issue said they were on during problem. Not sure how much both lights draw when fully on, worth looking at for power draw anyway in case only partly engaged. Is there any aftermarket stuff wired in to car that might have been added to abs circuit? Some remote start units use a brake signal.

With our remote battery terminals I would still try to test right at fuse. Remote terminals aren’t the same as testing right on the battery terminals, there is extra power drop and grounding issues. Mark abs relay under hood and swap it’s location with another identical relay. Bad coil in relay another possibility.

ESI 306B 30 Amp Fuse Buddy ATC Tester

Found this on Amazon  and purchased it. Was $21.00 USD so I figured I’d try it out.  Thanks for the tip John!

Fuse tester wouldn't be accurate in my current situation, because as mentioned above if I remove the fuse and reinsert it, the drain stops until I restart the draw test.

So removing the fuse, and inserting the tester would show zero drainage, thus leading to more confusion.

That's why I was kinda thinking PCM as the issue. If it was the TIPM, I would think that the drain would continue after reinserting the fuse during the testing.

But as it is now it's like it's forgetting to put abs valve to sleep after engine turns off. But then we remove the fuse, reinsert it and it remains off, reducing the amp draw from 500 milliamps to 60 or less milliamps.

I could just pull the fuse but then I'd be screwed if I got into a major accident and they saw the fuse was pulled.

Hankster

Try unplugging the actual abs module. Salty water and the green crusties might have had there way with it. May even be one of the sensors that connect to it. I would continue to unplug things until you find the root cause.

  • OhareFred and John/Horace

Update: so there's no parasitic draw. I simply wasnt waiting long enough for the abs module to be put to sleep. Normal draw on battery is 10 milliamps now which is well within spec.

Decided to swap walmart battery to my old battery for testing purposes. Vehicle would start everyday and it seemed like that was the cause. However vehicle sat for 2 full days this weekend and vehicle would not start. Voltage 11.55 volts. Still could be a battery issue (Walmart battery faulty/bad connection, old battery weak) but here's the differences between both batteries and testing phases:

Walmart battery would die overnight sometimes and when it did, the dash would be flickering like crazy, and the relays under the hood would be chattering like crazy, on and off until I  disconnect battery.

Old battery was fine everyday but died after two days of sitting. But when it would die, the dash would be fine. No flashing or flickering or chattering relays. It would simply not start, and it would show the low voltage indicator on the dash.

Alternator charging at 14.70 volts btw.

This tells me it could still be a battery issue. I swapped the old Walmart battery for a new one and I'll be throwing it in the dodge when I get some time. Probably next Thursday.

Couple thing I did as well for testing purposes: disconnected my rust prevention module. And disconnected my dashcam.

i would try an AGM battery if thats the case. they should be preforming better in cold with better CCAs too. havent done it myself but if you are buying a new battery again (current batteries not under warranty) thats maybe where i would start if you feel confident on your diagnosis (seems about right to me). with the ON cold snap (especially down here in SW-ON) ive already had to help a random fellow 2.4 journey owner with bumping their car this winter.

Do you have the "big screen" audio with nav/bluetooth/ and all that stuff?   I've heard many cases of such not shutting down properly and killing batteries in short (2-3 days). Also you really should have the batteries properly load tested with meter that shops and parts stores use to properly determine battery health. Most will do this for FREE.

Big screen yes. I'll try removing the bluetooth and radio fuses to eliminate them as probable causes.

The battery has already been load tested but the shop had mentioned that batteries that pass these tests can certainly still be bad.

Random thought: My alternator is charging my battery at 14.70 - 14.75v. Is that not too high? Therefore it's overcharging my batteries, thus killing them?

Nope, that's a proper alternator output.   Best wat to load test is at "normal" state, NOT fully charged and the test.

I'm thinking battery as well, however i'm still not sold on the alternator being fine. My buddy had this exact same issue happen to him and it was happening at random times as well and it was his alternator draining the battery on random occasions while vehicle was off. I also found a thread where a few journey owners had the same thing happen to them. I decided to do an AC voltage test to see if the alternator's regulator or diodes may be faulty. Typically this is done while the vehicle is running, setting your multimeter to ACV, and putting the positive lead on the positive terminal on the alternator, and the negative lead on a ground and the theory goes that if you see anything more than 0.5v, then the alternator is at fault. Now, i don't have easy access to the alternator due to it being winter, so i did it through less traditional means: I connected the leads to the battery jumping terminals (I've seen a few sites mentioning you can do it this way as well, but i'm still not 100% it's correct and therefore my findings are inconclusive so far). Anyhoo, when connecting the ACV leads to the battery jumping terminals, the voltage showed 31.6v. Which is way past the allowed 0.5v.

I'll still be changing the battery this week, but if it's still draining i'll be looking into doing the alternator test properly - straight from the alternator. Your thoughts? Oh and also here's this week's voltage drops from the vehicle being parked for a few days: Parked Vehicle sunday at 6pm after driving and charging battery while driving.

10pm:12.45v

7:15am:12.41v

11:15am:12.39v

4:30pm:12.38v

6:15pm:12.38v

9:00pm:12.37v

7:30am: 12.35v

Looking at this, the drain goes from 0.02 volts every 2 - 3 hrs, down to about 0.02v every 9+ hours. I know older batteries lose charge over time so it could be the battery is still settling down the whatever voltage it can actually hold. (Battery is 5 years old, so i'd guess it would eventually settle at 12.25v). Though it was still showing a slow drain over time, this is much better results when compared to my random decrease to 11.5v last sunday at 4:30pm after sitting for about the same amount of time, and all I did was:

-unplug dashcam

-disconnect rust prevention module

-set interior lights to never turn on (in case they were randomly turning on during the night)

So it could be any of these things, or none of these things if it's a bad alternator or bad battery. I'll be throwing in the replacement new walmart battery tomorrow and restart my testing over a few days to see if it's still slowly losing charge.

Well, voltage readings are a FAR cry from what you posted of 14.5v earlier! AND in your area, 5 years on a battery is a LONG time and would definitely be on the worn out side.

Do what you want, it's your vehicle......

What? I never said the battery was 14.5v......i said it was at 14.7 while vehicle was running, when checking the alternator charging output...

These tests are all done with the vehicle off and parked, except for the alternator AC voltage test with vehicle on.

Sorry, I must not had enough coffee in me yet that I missed that.  But I still believe the alternator to be OK along with the rest of charging system controls( the ECM also plays into charge rates). I do believe the battery to be the culprit being 5 tears old. As for my posting of "do what you want"....I think you have just gone a long and overly involved process in reaching your same conclusion.

On my 09 my original battery lasted 5 years, the replacement lasted 4.  The original was fine until it just up and died overnight, the replacement just got weaker, sometimes having to turn the key twice to get the car to crank.  Your voltages don’t look that bad, but why chance it.  If you have someplace warm to swap batteries, might be a good idea.  If not, maybe a trickle charger of carry a booster with you until you can swap the batteries. ?

It's true - I agree that I'm perhaps overanalyzing everything ahead of time. It's moreso of a "I can't change the battery yet, therefore i'm trying to gather as much information as possible now, so that if the drain still happens with the new battery, I'll be ready for the next possible solution". Blame my computer job for this mentality. I'll stop testing for now until I change the battery lol sorry.

12 minutes ago, Locosiete said: Well not to throw gas on fire but if you don't think you can change battery for some time and think the voltage is fluctuating randomly you could hook up a simple 12 volt gauge and run it into the cab so while driving you can see if voltage goes from charging to discharging to confirm your theory.   But... if it was discharging while driving it would be low or dead by the time you got to your location and you would get the low power saver warning light while driving. Which i don't believe you had mentioned before. So would rule out alternator not charging correctly.    As fsr as a parasitic drain from the voltage and times you posted to me that sounds more like a weak battery not holding a charge vs being drained by something. One option to test this if replacing battery is not an option for some time would be disconnect positive connection at connection in engine compartment and wrap cable with rubber glove so doesn't ground out. Check voltage and then recheck following morning and if weak battery it will drain with no connection.  Downside is you loose all radio settings and may run a little rough while computer resets. But if you disconnect positive then you know there is nothing drawing from it. Or can disconnect ground if you can get them all lol

If it is indeed a faulty alternator, the discharging of the battery from the alternator happens while the vehicle is off, not while being driven.

But yes, i have a list of things to try if its not the battery hahah. I'll see if someone can watch my little man tonight while I quickly change the battery so that I can monitor any voltage drop overnight. If it drops, on to the next step!

16 minutes ago, Locosiete said: Well for your sake hope it is not something more then a tired battery. Parasitic drain can sometimes be a major pain to narrow down and then resolve.    Not saying alternator can't discharge while off but personally i have never had that or known it to happen. Not saying it can't but just never come across that myself. The smarter they make cars the more potential issues it can create.  I also have a 97 cadillac, yes i own too many cars lol, that the ABS Module would cycle with car off killing battery. That was very annoying to figure out but nevertheless it was a new one to me.

That's also a valid theory. Again, it took a few minutes for my ABS valve to go to sleep. Once i saw it went to sleep, i concluded my parasitic draw test. Perhaps if i would have waited another half hour or so, the abs module would have kicked back on again, then off again, drawing voltage. I'll add "remove abs valve fuse" to my list of possible solutions. Whatever drain this is, it's not happening consistently.

I found a list of possible solutions online that somebody created when he was facing the same issue. His solution was the TIPM btw. I'll upload it now for reference for those who may be going through the same thing.

Emailed back to USCIS field office, asked for the damn magic number the consular section need. "They are confused, just wait", I was told. Okay...

By that time it's Friday night before the holiday weekend, now we need to wait till Wednesday to pay and schedule a medical, and this delays us by 3 weeks, and I may not be able to come for an interview now because work starts back up in 2 weeks and I have to be there. Or I'll just have to fly to Moscow for 1 day.

My immigration journey

July 2009 - F1 student PhD program

AOS June 2010 - married USC

Kamala Harris: Everything you need to know

Vice President Kamala Harris speaks during a campaign event.

  • Copy Link URL Copied!

Kamala Harris’ life has been filled with milestones.

Her elementary school class in the 1970s was the second one to integrate Berkeley schools .

Harris was the first woman elected as San Francisco’s district attorney.

She was the first woman to be elected as California’s attorney general.

She was the first woman of color to be elected to the U.S. Senate from California.

She was first woman elected vice president of the United States.

Now, with President Biden announcing Sunday that he will step aside as the Democratic presidential nominee and endorsing Harris, she is close to becoming the party’s Democratic nominee for president.

The Times has been covering Harris extensively for two decades. Here is an overview of her story from our pages.

President Biden listens as Vice President Kamala Harris speaks.

California roots

From Oakland to Canada and back, with inspiration from India

  • Harris was born in Oakland to parents who had come to California to study at UC Berkeley. Her father, who has roots in Jamaica, was an economics professor; her mother, who had roots in India, was a cancer researcher. Harris spent several years as a child in Oakland and Berkeley, but after her parents divorced, she and her mother moved to Canada.
  • Harris has spoken of her Indian grandfather as being a key force in her life, and of her interest in government. P.V. Gopalan was an Indian civil servant on assignment in an era of postcolonial ferment. As The Times reported, “Until his death in 1998, Gopalan remained from thousands of miles away a pen pal and guiding influence — accomplished, civic-minded, doting, playful — who helped kindle Harris’ interest in public service.”
  • From seventh grade to the end of high school, Harris and her mother lived in Montreal and its Westmount neighborhood.

Harris earned her bachelor’s degree at Howard University in 1986.

In 2003, Harris serves lunch while running for San Francisco district attorney.

  • After graduating from the University of California Hastings College of Law in San Francisco, Harris passed the bar examination and worked her way up in the Alameda County and San Francisco County district attorney’s offices. Harris was San Francisco district attorney from 2004 to 2010.
  • Harris started dating entertainment attorney Doug Emhoff and permanently relocated to Brentwood by the time they married in 2014.
  • In 2016, Harris was elected to the U.S. Senate, leaving her California job to take office early in 2017.

Political beginnings

A prosecutor with an ambition for Bay Area politics

  • Harris got her start in Bay Area politics and law enforcement. She prosecuted murder, rape, assault and drug cases at the Alameda County district attorney’s office in Oakland from 1990 to 1998.
  • San Francisco Dist. Atty. Terence Hallinan had hired Harris in 1998 to lead his career-criminal unit. She ended up running against him and winning in 2003. The campaign was bruising, with critics citing her relationship with San Francisco’s colorful and controversial Mayor Willie Brown. Her record as a prosecutor included some progressive policies but other ones that critics would later say were too “tough on crime.”

In 2010, Harris moved to statewide politics, defeating Republican Steve Cooley for attorney general.

Kamala Harris and several other people look at a laptop screen.

  • As attorney general, she started implicit-bias training for law enforcement, and as district attorney she launched a program that enabled first-time nonviolent offenders to get their charges dismissed if they finished job training. Critics have faulted her, though, for working in court to uphold California’s death penalty, despite her personal opposition, her threats to jail parents of chronically truant schoolchildren and flop flops.
  • In 2016, The Times editorial board praised Harris for being willing to stand up for the little guy as attorney general. But it issued this warning: “Harris has at times seemed more focused on her political career than on the job she was elected to do. She has been too cautious and unwilling to stake out a position on controversial issues, even when her voice would have been valuable to the debate.”
  • Harris gained national attention for her efforts to have courts overturn California’s ban on gay marriage and allow same-sex couples to legally marry.

National stage

Breaking barriers with a rise to Washington

  • Her next move was the 2016 race to replace the retiring Barbara Boxer as U.S. senator. With Democrats dominant in California, it came down to a history-making battle between her and Southern California’s Loretta Sanchez. When Harris won, The Times declared that she tore “down a color barrier that has stood for as long as California statehood.”
  • In 2019, she began her campaign for U.S. president. Early on she built strong momentum, drawing a crowd of roughly 20,000 to a lavish Oakland rally. She raised $1.5 million in just 24 hours. She boasted a string of endorsements from California politicians.
  • But her campaign slowly sputtered. As The Times reported in March 2019, the fall “stems in part from Harris’ failure to present a compelling case for her candidacy beyond her background as a prosecutor, her buoyant personality and a deep contempt — shared by others in the contest — for President Trump.”
  • In December, she suspended her campaign. The Times called it a “lackluster end to an initially soaring presidential bid premised on the California senator’s personal biography and prosecutorial acumen. Ultimately, her run foundered with a muddled purpose, campaign infighting and an inability to sustain support from vital Democratic voting blocs, particularly African Americans.”

Sen. Kamala Harris waves in front of a U.S. flag.

  • Biden locked in the nomination, but there was no guarantee he would pick her as his running mate. Some felt the Biden team was angry at her treatment of him during the campaign. But Biden ended up selecting Harris. The Times said at the time: “In many ways, Harris is a safe pick — broadly popular in the Democratic Party and well acquainted with the rigors of a national campaign. But her selection also carries symbolic heft in this moment when race relations are at top of mind for voters.”
  • Harris held her own during her debate with Vice President Mike Pence and serving as an effective surrogate. The Times reported “Those who have spoken with Harris say she sees the changes — in style, in her approach to campaigning, in the faces surrounding her — worth the goals she now pursues: replacing Trump with Biden and becoming the first female vice president in history.”

  • After her first year in office, The Times offered this assessment: “Harris has struggled to tell her own story, leaving others to fill the void. Conservative media have attacked her while mainstream outlets have published a string of stories about low morale and high staff turnover in her office. Like many vice presidents, Harris is learning how hard it is to define herself as a No. 2.
  • She was handed a difficult assignment in those early months: Leading diplomatic efforts to curb migration from Central America. There were early controversies, such as when she told would-be immigrants not to come to the United States . As the immigration issue has become hot in the 2024 race, Harris faces tough questions about her role in Biden policies.
  • Democrats worried about Harris’ lackluster poll numbers as they considered a leader of the party after Biden. “Harris has become a source of tension among Democrats, as growing worries over Harris’ political stature collide with concerns that any move to sideline her would alienate the voters needed to win elections and undercut the party’s promise of equity,” The Times wrote in 2021.
  • After the Supreme Court struck down Roe vs. Wade, Harris emerged as a leading voice in protecting reproductive rights.

Vice President Kamala Harris takes the stage near a man in a suit.

  • Barabak in early 2024 rated her this way : “Harris finally seems to have found her footing in a role to which she is accustomed and adept: prosecuting attorney.”
  • Harris has endured unprecedented levels of hate on social media. “Research shows that Harris may be the most targeted American politician on the internet, one who checks every box for the haters of the fever swamps: She’s a woman, she’s a person of color and she holds power,” The Times found.
  • Before Biden’s disastrous debate performance, Harris was still struggling to present herself as a successor. “More than three years into the oldest president in history’s first term, his understudy has failed to win over a majority of voters or convince them that she is ready to step in if Biden falters, according to polls ,” The Times reported in April.
  • Harris’ star rose as Democrats began to call on Biden to step aside and end his reelection campaign. She had remained publicly supportive of Biden, even as calls for her to replace him at the head of the ticket grew louder.

In Trump’s dodge of an assassin’s bullet, some Republicans see the ‘hand of God’

Delegates prayed during the first day of the convention.

MILWAUKEE — “FEAR NOT,” read the T-shirts stocked in the merchandise shops at the convention center here, the text imposed over a photo of Donald Trump.

Fear not. It’s the same message the former president posted on social media the day after the attempted assassination, the same words — an apparent reference to the Bible — that pop up to greet visitors to his campaign website and have appeared in several fund-raising appeals over the past few days.

“Fear not,” his website prompts. “Unity. Peace. Make America Great Again.”

Trump has not always been the preferred candidate of religious communities. Now, in the wake of an assassination attempt last weekend, his political story is increasingly being told in the language of faith. As Republicans gathered in Wisconsin this week, with their candidate recovering from the shooting at a Saturday rally, their rah-rah Republican message has taken on fresh religious overtones.

The GOP has long claimed the mantle of the party of faith, and many of Trump’s most devout supporters have long cloaked him in religious imagery, likening him to a savior figure and saying he has been persecuted unlike any politician before. But the religious allusions have taken on new meaning, and they are coming at a constant clip. On stage at the convention center, speaker after speaker points to the “hand of God” as they express gratitude for Trump’s safety and spirit.

The ubiquity of those remarks also underscores the complete hold Trump has on the GOP, from the reliably conservative Bible Belt to the Northeastern blue state that Republicans here have renamed “Maga-chusetts.” And the convention caps a notable journey for Trump, from a first campaign when many religious leaders were deeply skeptical of him, to a reelection bid that many claim is wrapped in divine protection.

“If you didn’t believe in miracles before Saturday, you better be believing right now,” Senator Tim Scott, a South Carolina Republican, said in his address to the convention Monday. “Our God still saves, he still delivers, and he still sets free. Because on Saturday the devil came to Pennsylvania holding a rifle but an American lion got back on his feet and he roared.”

And Republican Texas Senator Ted Cruz opened his speech to the delegates Tuesday night by saying, “Let me start by giving thanks to God almighty for protecting President Trump and for turning his head on Saturday as the shot was fired.”

Those remarks aren’t some strategic play for sympathy, but sincere expressions of gratitude and reverence, former Trump adviser Kellyanne Conway told the Globe Tuesday as she walked out of Fiserv Forum, where the convention is taking place.

“It’s not a theme. It’s a belief that many people of faith have,” Conway said. She contrasted that with a Democratic Party she called “hostile to religion.”

Still, the language obscures the more complicated relationship Trump has had with faith and faith leaders. Religious leaders have not always embraced the brash, sometimes vulgar candidate, who had been married three times, donated to Democrats, and voiced a shifting message on abortion when he ran for president the first time in 2016. It was Trump’s first vice president, Mike Pence, as well as his choices for the Supreme Court, that brought conservative Christian organizations more firmly into his coalition.

“In 2016 I didn’t support him in the primary. It wasn’t until he actually won the nomination that I really got on board,” said Penny Nance, president and chief executive of Concerned Women for America. “I didn’t know him, I didn’t know how he would govern. He didn’t have any kind of a record, expectations were very low. Let’s just say he’s exceeded our expectations and we think he was a great president.”

Nance, standing a few feet from a pink bus emblazoned with the name of her group as well as the words, “She Prays, She Votes,” said that Trump never pretended to be a devout Christian, but that his authenticity was part of his appeal.

“I feel like in politics there are a lot of people who love to do the Jesus talk but it’s not necessarily in the heart,” she said. “We appreciate somebody who is authentic.”

Ralph Reed, founder of the Faith and Freedom Coalition, an influential conservative group that is working to turn out the evangelical vote for Trump this fall, also acknowledged in an interview Tuesday that some religious leaders were not always firmly in Trump’s column. But Trump “really won the loyalty and support of evangelicals and other people of faith. And I think that they’ll vote for him in even bigger numbers in 2024,” Reed said.

Reed said his organization plans to knock on 10 million doors in battleground states this election cycle — 10 times as many as the group targeted in 2016. The effort will cost $62 million, Reed said.

Still, in the 2024 election, Trump is hardly the candidate known for his religiosity.

President Biden, a devout Catholic, was at mass on Saturday evening when shots rang out at the Trump rally in Pennsylvania. A former Catholic school student, he sometimes blesses himself with the sign of the cross in jest or seriousness, speaks frequently about his faith, and always wears the rosary beads of his son, Beau, who died from cancer in 2015.

“We’re all imperfect beings — all of us. And we don’t know where fate is going to take us or when it’s going to take us,” Biden said at a speech at a Baptist church in Columbia, S.C., in January. “But we can do our best to seek the light and the hope and love. You know, from where I come from, that’s the power of faith.”

A March poll by the Pew Research Center found that 13 percent of Americans thought Biden was “very” religious and 41 percent said he is “somewhat” religious. Just 4 percent of Americans thought Trump was “very” religious and 25 percent said he was “somewhat” religious.

Still, at least for some voters who staunchly oppose abortion, the policy message from Trump’s Republican Party has proven disappointing. This year’s platform has a softened stance on abortion , for example, and it no longer contains references to “traditional marriage” as between “one man and one woman.”

“He’s never been antiabortion. He’s always been pro-Trump,” said William Reynolds, 18, who held a sign branding Trump a “baby killer” outside an RNC event in Milwaukee midday Tuesday. Reynolds, who practices Orthodox Judaism and is a progressive critical of Biden, said he objected to the suggestion by some Trump supporters that God saved him from being killed Saturday.

“I think it shows how far the Republican Party has fallen,” Reynolds said of the rhetoric. “Now, they literally worship him.”

In Milwaukee, Trump and prayer are in close proximity. On a merchandise table in the sprawling exhibition hall, atop a stack of “God Bless the USA” Bibles Trump endorsed earlier this year, sits the now iconic photo of Trump, blood on his face and fist in the air, after the shooting. Beside it is a snapshot of Trump holding the Bible and wearing a grin.
