Buy a Jetta, Get a Bike: The 1990s VW x Trek Collab

The 1996 Jetta Trek Limited Edition Sedan started under $16,000 and came with either a five speed manual or four speed automatic. The VW Trek bike came with 21 speeds and custom seat, handgrips, and special graphics: a dude on a multi-colored rocket, orbiting the VW logo, and holding…something?

Details on the bikes are a bit harder to find. The 1996 ones had a steel frame, but this one has an aluminum frame, which may be the 1997 version. The OCLV on the rocket stands for Trek’s patented carbon fiber, but it’s unlikely that there’s any of it on this bike. A few parts had been replaced in the past twenty years, including the saddle (which also would have had that rocket boy logo), but it still has the original VW hand grips.

It’s definitely in better shape than some of the Trek Edition automobiles out there: Junkyard Gem .

Update: It’s 2022, and someone is selling a never-used VW Trek bike and branded gear in NJ.

I have the bike and the rack and all the keys. I have an additional tulli bike mount I bought after but within a year. The rack is almost mint the bike I used but it should clean up nice. Sorry, never got the notification on your reply. 290K on the car, and much less on the bike. It took me a while before I got into mountain biking, and after a few years on the Trek Jetta, I got a bike with suspension. Starting to think about selling the Car/bike/rack.

1996 Volkswagen Jetta review: Our expert's take

THERE WERE OTHER vehicles in the driveway — bigger, faster and more expensive ones than the 1996 Volkswagen Jetta GLX. But I was in the mood for something light and spirited. Only the Jetta GLX qualified.

The car was deep metallic blue with a cream interior. It was an upscale thing. The seats were covered with leather, which made me laugh.

Time was when Volkswagen meant cheap, as was the original VW Beetle — a humped, putt-putt of a car for the intellectually rich and financially busted. At least, that’s the way it seemed. Most of my Beetle-bum friends were poets, students or non-tenured college professors.

Anyway, the new Jetta GLX, even with its leather upholstery and other luxmobile appointments, seemed simple enough — the perfect car for a long run in Virginia’s sun. I drove from Arlington to Norfolk via a zigzag route that took in parts of Charlottesville and brought me to Arlington again. I drove for the heck of it, just because the day was beautiful and the car was grand.

Background: I’m almost allergic to saying good things about Volkswagen, because Volkswagen once seemed allergic to product quality and durability.

I’ve lost count of the readers and friends who’ve called to complain about failed clutches, wacky electrical systems, rust, water leaks, failed fuel pumps and other maladies that have afflicted their various Volkswagen models over the years.

As best I can remember, most of those complaints stemmed from experiences with Volkswagens built from about 1977 through 1989. After that, the grumbling seems to have quieted.

I’d like to believe that higher VW quality lowered the complaint volume, but there’s evidence to suggest that lower VW sales played a role, too. Though it once was the dominant import nameplate in the United States, VW held a scant 0.46 percent of the U.S. auto market in 1995, compared with 7.5 percent for Toyota, identical 4.1 percent shares for Nissan and Honda, and 1.8 percent for Mitsubishi.

VW’s publicists frequently boast that theirs is one of the highest U.S. market shares held by a European car company, and the numbers say that they are right. Mercedes-Benz had a lower 1995 market share (0.44 percent) than Volkswagen, as did Audi (0.12 percent), Jaguar (0.09 percent), Porsche (0.05 percent) and Saab (0.19 percent). Volvo (0.95 percent) and BMW (0.61 percent) had the highest U.S.-share rankings among the Europeans.

But the rub for VW is this: Its European rivals mostly are expensive, luxcar marketers, which automatically assigns them to a tiny, exclusive buyer group. Volkswagen, as implied by its very name, is supposed to be a car for ordinary people. In the United States at least, these ordinary people much prefer to buy Toyota and Honda.

Some Volkswagen officials have conceded that they turned off the American buyer in the late ’70s and throughout the ’80s with poor quality and uninspired automotive design. But they say that those were mistakes of the past. T he 1996 Jetta GLX (and the practically identical Passat), they say, represents the Volkswagen of the future.

If so, it’ll be a bright future indeed. As tested, the 1996 Jetta GLX is one of the best, most refined, front-wheel-drive family sedans available.

Let’s forget the GLX’s sports-car pretensions (it comes with a goofy rear air “spoiler” and no-go-in-snow low-aspect ratio tires). The value here is in the car’s overall design and performance.

In brief, the tiny-on-the-outside Jetta GLX has more front leg room than the Toyota Camry and as much trunk space, 15 cubic feet, as several of its larger and more expensive competitors. It runs and handles with the finesse of a BMW 328i; and even in the snow with low-aspect ratio tires, it does a heck of a lot better than the pricier Volvo 850 R, which is equipped with similar rubber.

The standard engine for the new Jetta GLX is a 12-valve, double-overhead cam, water-cooled 2.8-liter V6 (which VW calls the VR6) rated 172 horsep wer at 5,800 rpm with max torque set at 173 pound-feet at 4,200 rpm.

Standard brakes include ventilated front discs/solid rear discs with anti-lock backup. A five-speed manual transmission is standard. An electronically controlled four-speed automatic is optional. And, ahem, yes, Volkswagen finally has installed two front air bags in its cars.

Complaints: Personal pique: On manual shifters, I prefer to have the “reverse” gear located in the southeast corner, instead of in the northwest corner, as it is in the Jetta GLX.

Praise: Excellence in design and engineering. An extremely obedient car that does exactly what you want it to do when you want it to do it. Definitely fun to drive. With the lone exception of that dumb rear air “spoiler,” consistently good styling inside and out. (Do you hear that, Volvo?)

Head-turning quotient: A simple, straightforward exterior that drew raves on the street.

Ride, acceleration and handling: Triple aces. An ace-plus for acceleration, 0-to-60 mph in 7.5 seconds. Excellent braking.

Mileage: About 23 miles per gallon (14.5-gallon tank, estimated 321-mile range on usable volume of recommended premium unleaded), running mostly highway and driver only with no cargo.

Sound system: Ten-speaker, AM/FM stereo radio and cassette by VW/Bose. Easily one of the best VW sound systems ever. System is also CD compatible.

Price: Jetta GLX base price is $20,610. Dealer invoice on base model is $19,020. Price as tested is $22,900, including $1,815 in options (power sunroof, leather seats, heated front seats and clear-coat metallic paint) and a $475 destination charge.

Purse-strings note: Competitively priced with other high-content, compact family sedans. Compare with Toyota Camry LE, Nissan Maxima SE, Honda Accord EX with V6, Oldsmobile LSS sedan, Mercury Sable LS sedan, Chrysler Concorde, Mazda 626, Audi A4 and, yeah, BMW’s 328i sedan.

ok so i saw this car kinda liked jettas so i went to go look at it i went there to test drive i went there drove over an hour the car has decent pick up but if u drive over 40 the wheel vibrates all over and as i was driving it the instrment cluster went out and when i 1st got in it the check engine light was already on i told them about the stuff and all they said is for 1300 your not getting a good car then i test drove a 2000 sum saturne and as soon as u pulled off in it theres a awful grinding sound coming form the back end i mean do they check any cars they sell? wudnt even lower the price at all

Great Little Car

This car is great with a manual gearbox. The handling is awesome. Although, this car is not so awesome in snow. If you buy this, I strongly advise you to make sure you have very good tires on it before driving in snow.

Junkyard Gem: 1997 Volkswagen Jetta Trek Edition

The vw that came with a trek bicycle and a roof rack, now found in a denver junkyard without the bike..

Volkswagen began the 1990s with designer-edition cars , then had a fling (in Europe) with Golfs co-branded with Pink Floyd, the Rolling Stones, and Bon Jovi . Later in the decade, it appears that focus-group research led Volkswagen of America to believe that Golf and Jetta buyers tended to enjoy sporty outdoor activities, which led to cars being sold here with matching skis or bicycles. We'll follow up the discarded K2 Edition Golf we saw recently with this Trek Edition Jetta in Colorado.

Trek is a Wisconsin-based bicycle company that became extremely popular among American mountain bikers during the 1990s, and so VWoA made a good move by creating the Trek Edition Jetta and Golf for the 1996 and 1997 model years. Buyers got a pretty decent Trek mountain bike to match the car, plus a roof rack to haul it to the nearest riding locale (here in Denver, you're likely to find Lemons racers riding pink Barbie Edition Huffys in such locales).

The '96 Trek Jetta got very busy seat fabric depecting basketball players and dancers , but the '97s received these more dignified Trek-monogrammed seats.

While the Trek bike had a 21-speed clutchless manual transmission (technically speaking, it's a seven-speed with a dual-ratio overdrive), the derailleur-based gear-change system turned out to be ill-suited for car use. In 1997, American Jetta buyers could choose between a five-speed manual and a four-speed automatic. This car has the five-on-the-floor (sadly, no five-on-the-tree was available).

The bicycle and its roof racks are long gone, of course, though the original owner's manuals will remain with the car to the very end .

Here's an innovative field-expedient solution to rattly side glass.

I've noticed that Bayside Breeze has been closing in on Black Ice and New Car Scent as the most popular Car-Freshener Little Trees found in junkyard cars.

It would be fun to own a Jetta Trek bicycle, though I think I'd prefer a Lexus F Sport bike (seen here in a Yokohama dealership with matching Lexus golf clubs, last year). The $10,000 price tag feels a bit steep, though.

Khabarovsk – the view from above

Khabarovsk is a city with a population of about 607 thousand people, the administrative center of the Far Eastern Federal District and the Khabarovsk region . It is one of the largest political, educational and cultural centers of the Russian Far East.

The city is located at the intersection of international rail and air transport routes near the border with China. Khabarovsk, named after Yerofey Khabarov (the Russian explorer of the 17th century), was founded in 1858. Photos by: Slava Stepanov .

Cost to Drive Cost to drive estimates for the 1996 Volkswagen Jetta GLS 4dr Sedan and comparison vehicles are based on 15,000 miles per year (with a mix of 55% city and 45% highway driving) and energy estimates of $3.55 per gallon for regular unleaded in North Dakota.

Vehicle overview.

Volkswagen's sedan version of the Golf, the Jetta, has always been one of our favorite sedans. Like most cars conceived in Germany, the Jetta has an uncanny ability to keep the driver in touch with every undulation and irregularity in the road without sacrificing comfort. It has a cavernous interior, logically laid-out controls and displays, and zippy performance.

GL, GLS, Trek, and Wolfsburg Edition Jettas offer enough oomph to keep most drivers satisfied, when equipped with a five-speed transmission. The optional automatic saps what little power the Jetta has to offer, and we don't recommend it. Most drivers who want a Jetta will be of the persuasion that eschews the autobox in favor of rowing their own gears anyway because, let's face it, why buy a VW if you don't enjoy driving?

Driving enjoyment is what the top-of-the-line GLX is all about. Sporting a powerful and compact V6 engine, thick alloy wheels, and newly lowered sport suspension, the GLX is a poor man's BMW 325i. If you have a need for speed, this is the Jetta to buy.

This year, Jettas get a sharp new grille, smoother automatic transmission, and a new Bose stereo system is available. Three new colors are available for 1996. A Turbo Direct Injection (TDI) arrived in showrooms mid-year. Volkswagen claims this car will change the way you think of diesels, touting how quick, quiet and clean it is. We don't think Americans will be interested.

Regular Jettas are a blast once they're moving. Sharp steering response, a taut chassis, and a superb driving position combine to make you forget about the wimpy 2.0-liter, 115-horsepower engine under the hood.

Reliability has been a problem with Volkswagens in the past. However, a new 10 year/100,000 mile warranty backs up the powertrain, and free roadside assistance is provided for the first two years of ownership.

Not that you couldn't afford to fix it once in a while. The uplevel GLS, loaded with antilock brakes, sunroof, CD changer, and a fun-robbing automatic transmission, doesn't crack the $20,000 barrier. Prices like these make the Jetta very competitive with the Chrysler Cirrus, Toyota Camry, and Honda Accord. The GLX undercuts premium German sedans by thousands of dollars, without sacrificing performance, features or that Teutonic feel. Sign us up.
