what airline two AA inside a triangle with a bird in the middle of the A’s?

Is American Airlines or United on the list, It is safe and has a globe shape and the American Flag.

Terrible article , no mention of the most iconic airway called Olympic airways

Air Tarugo is the best

As a Graphic Designer, all logos are inspirational for me. I learned many things in this Article. The only one logo which I cannot understand is PNG AIR, I don’t know why it is not appealing to my eyes. Thanks for this Beebom.

Can u tell me all the airlines headquarters

What company logo looks like a sun with an S in the middle

The best one is iran air

IranAir logo is one of five beautiful and historc logo in the past 50 years but unfortunatly is not among 30 logo you select.

Look up Iran Air logo and its history. It’s been rated number 1 in another best looking list. I don’t get it how a text logo and a text-goat logo can get two top spots on this list.

By paying off oil money, you can buy a football world cup!! A article means nothing compar to that! You are right Iranair logo has best looking and most striking looking logo in all of airline industry.

I wish Air Niugini and PNG Air (both Papua New Guinea airlines) to be on that list. Their symbols represents different cultures and traditions that are rare and unique.

Thanks for your comment, Teddy. This article was originally written in 2015, but went through some changes in the meantime. Although I’m not the one in charge of updating it, I’ll make sure your suggestions get included in future revisions. 🙂

Where is Air New Zealand’s logo in your list? That is a renownew symbol rated 1st or 2nd in other airline lists. A poor line up you have here, Beebom

Airlines usually target and serve various audiences. As a result, they are also challenged with designing a logo that appeals to all audiences around the world. This makes airline logos a great source for learning how to properly craft a logo that effectively promotes the brand.

Virgin Airlines

virgin-logo

The logo for Virgin airlines is one of the best and most iconic logos for many reasons. Mainly because it’s not a logo made specifically for an airline. It’s a logo that represents an entire corporation of multiple brands.

When Sir Richard Branson was working on the Virgin logo he had a vision of something “stylishly simple”. He ended up choosing a signature-style logo that was originally scribbled on a paper napkin.

Today the logo represents a multi-billion-dollar industry and soon to be headed into space as well. This goes to show that you don’t always have to make logos that look similar to your competition. Or even make special logos just for subsidiary brands.

Lesson: Keep it simple but always make sure the logo represents the direction where the company is headed.

British Airways

british airways

Simplicity is always the best way to show off authority and class. British Airways proves this with its simple yet classy logo design. British Airways has been in business for more than 100 years. And its logo resembles the timeless service done by the company.

The logo uses a classic font with a ribbon symbol, which is used to represent the speedbird symbol used by Imperial Airways back in 1932.

Lesson: Keep it simple. Minimalism never goes out of style.

Singapore Airlines

singapore airlines

The logo for Singapore Airlines has a uniquely elegant look that’s quite unmatched by others in the industry. The stylish gold color used in the logo aims to represent a luxurious experience for all passengers. Given that the logo is commonly used with a blue-colored background, the gold symbol looks even better no matter where it’s displayed.

Lesson: With the right color combination, you can easily create a logo that grabs anyone’s attention.

Qantas Airways

qantas

Qantas Airways, Australia’s biggest airline has been around for nearly 100 years. The brand made sure to represent the country with a symbol of a kangaroo throughout the years.

Instead of using a simple drawing of a Kangaroo, the company now uses a colored background to make the symbol appear more highlighted on the tail of an airplane.

Qantas logo went through a series of changes since 2007 while it struggled to find the right typeface for the text. In 2016 it finally settled for a clean and more professional font design.

Lesson: Get creative with symbol designs and don’t be afraid to experiment with typefaces.

Malaysia Airlines

malaysia airlines

Malasia Airlines, or previously known as the Malaysian Airline System, has a quite beautiful logo that has a long history dates back to the 1970s. The company went through a few different logos since its rebranding. The latest one has a colorful and an attractive design. The symbol represents a Kelantan kite, which was kept from the original logo from the early MAS days. It’s the perfect symbol to not only represent the country but also for air travel.

Lesson: Instead of using common and national symbols, come up with a unique design.

Thai Airways

thai airways

Culture and tradition mean everything to some brands. They would break standards and usual design strategies to make logos that scream originality. A great example of such a brand is Thai Airways.

The logo for Thai Airways is a simple four-letter word accompanied by a symbol that represents the culture and traditions of Thailand.

Thailand is a country well-known for its traditions and its airline preserving it in its logo should be enough to tell the world about the country and its people.

Lesson: Include and convey your cultural traditions in your logos. It’ll make your designs stand out from the crowd.

emirates

When talking about airlines, Emirates is a company we can’t ignore. Emirates made a name for itself in the industry as a high-quality and luxurious airline. Despite its logo being a simple wordmark, it’s quite easily recognized around the world.

The wordmark logo features the name Emirates written in both English and Arabic. However, most people recognize Arabic wordmark as a symbol. That’s impressively clever branding.

Lesson: Using multilingual wordmarks can sometimes help create unique logos.

delta airline

The logo for the US-based Delta airlines features a very bold and stylish design. Similar to the Thai airways logo, this logo also features just a five-letter logo with a symbol. Interestingly, the triangle shape of the symbol actually represents the Greek letter for Delta. It’s the fourth letter of the Greek alphabet.

Lesson: Bold designs often pays out. But only when used for the appropriate brands.

egypt air

The logo for EgyptAir will instantly give you an idea about where it found inspiration. It features a symbol inspired by ancient Egyptian culture and mythology. It depicts the Egyptian god Horus, who represents power and is also known as the “Sky God”. This makes it more than appropriate symbol for an airline.

Lesson: Dig deep into history, you might find things to help represent your brand more effectively.

lufthansa

Lufthansa is Germany’s biggest airline. The brand used to have one of the most beautiful logo designs in the airline industry featuring a golden color design. However, the company recently revamped its logo to feature a more simple and clean design. Mainly to make it more convenient for the digital world.

Lesson: Make sure your logo designs convert well in both online and offline.

swiss air

Swiss Air used a very simple logo design that directly represents the country by taking inspiration from the country flag. It was simple and admirable.

Unfortunately, the company went bankrupt in 2002 and the fleet was taken over by Lufthansa. The company now operates as Swiss International Air Lines, or simply Swiss.

Lesson: Sometimes, a simple symbol can make your logo design look more unique.

aeromexico

Aeroméxico is the official airline of Mexico. The symbol used in this logo is what makes it quite unique. It represents a man wearing an eagle headdress. It was used by Native Americans to represent respect and honor. The company may have had the same concept in mind when using this symbol in its logo design.

Lesson: You can make your logos more meaningful with the right design.

Sri Lankan Airlines

sri lankan airlines

As you may have noticed, many airlines use a common color palette in its logo designs. It’s usually a combination of red and blue colors. But the Sri Lankan Airlines logo is not afraid to show more than a few colors.

This logo features multiple colors that work quite well for the branding of the airline. The symbol of the peacock is meant to represent the beauty of the island and the colors represent the multiple cultures of the country. In addition, it looks great on the tail of an airplane.

Lesson: When used properly, colors can help make a logo appeal to multiple cultures and audiences.

Making the distinction between a good airline logo and a bad one is fairly easy. Take a look at the logos below and you’ll see why.

Don’t be surprised if you haven’t heard of this airline before. PNG Air is a small airline based in Papua New Guinea. And it has one of the wildest logos you’ll ever see. Not just in airlines, but also in modern brands.

Apparently the logo represents diversity and uses ancient patters from its culture. Needless to say, people will have a hard time recognizing a brand that uses a pattern as a logo.

Lesson: Never use a pattern as a logo.

korean air

The official Korean Air logo has one of the worst designs ever made. In addition to the symbol that closely resembles the Pepsi logo, Korean Air also uses a typeface that’s quite hard to read and even look at.

However, it’s worth noting that the symbol used here is a traditional symbol used in Korean culture. Although, when creating a logo targeting international audiences, this symbol may not be the most appropriate way to showcase Korean culture.

Lesson: Do research to make sure your logo symbols look unique. And focus on improving readability.

China Airlines

china airlines

This is the kind of logo design you end up with when the designer procrastinates throughout the project and make the logo at the last minute to the deadline.

It’s a simple design. We can only imagine the thought process the designer went through. Just use a plain font for the text. And then cut and paste an image of a Plum Blossom flower. Don’t even worry about smoothening the rough edges of the flower cutout. Leave it as it is.

Lesson: Don’t copy-paste images into a logo design.

air asia

Air Asia made a terrible mistake by making a logo that looks almost exactly the same as the Virgin logo. In the early days, the logo was displayed on the tail of airplanes vertically aligned. Making it impossible to read without tilting your head.

Lesson: It’s okay to copy from others, but make sure to add your own personal touch.

United Airlines

united airways

United Airlines is one of the biggest airlines in the United States. The new logo for the brand has quite an interesting story behind it.

If you’re familiar with airline logos, you might think that this logo is a poor Photoshop job done by an amateur designer. Because the logo for the Continental Airlines used to look just like this .

However, when United acquired Continental in 2010, the two companies merged and introduced a new logo that’s quite confusing.

Lesson: Never recycle old logo designs.

air canada

Air Canada managed to modernize its logo over the years but still kept its maple leaf symbol attached. The logo was recently refreshed in 2017, however, the use of the maple leaf symbol seems to make it look quite dated and unattractive. They could’ve used a much simpler version of the symbol.

Lesson: Get rid of symbols if it doesn’t appeal to modern audiences.

Alaska Airlines

alaska airlines

What’s the first thing that you think of when talking about Alaska? It’s the chilling cold weather and mountains. Alaska Airlines wanted to capture that chilly weather in its logo design but failed miserably.

When you look at all other airline logos you’ll notice that they all use non-decorative fonts to make sure the text is readable from a distance. Alaska Airlines forgot about this key element. However, thankfully, the company realized its mistake and refreshed the logo in 2016 with more clean and simpler font design.

Lesson: Consider where and how a logo is used when designing it.

A good airline logo is completed with a strong, legible typeface that is clear to people from all countries and all languages.

10 Best Travel Logos And How to Design Your Own with our Logo Maker

Traveling is supposed to be fun and exciting, capitalizing on people’s natural passion for adventure… so why are so many travel logos boring? If you’re a travel brand, your logo should reflect the thrill and exhilaration of the industry to entice customers and encourage their high spirits. The question is, how do you design a travel logo like that if you’re new to logo design?

In this guide, we explain how to design your own travel logo , starting with an in-depth look at the 10 best travel logos to emulate. We’ll explain what these big travel brands do right with their logos, and then dive into practical advice new and small businesses can use for their own travel logos.

1. Lufthansa logo design

The German airline Lufthansa is a great travel logo to start with; they demonstrate a lot of the traditional guidelines for travel logos well. For starters, they use an emblematic bird for their symbol — birds, airplanes, and other flying objects are common choices for travel logos because they represent the freedom of going anywhere (not to mention a lot of travel involves flying).

It’s not just the bird iconography, but also the style in which it’s designed. Lufthansa makes good use of the repeated parallel lines, which, as explained in our guide to using shapes in logo design, denote stability and reliability.

For travel brands, these parallel lines are often used to show motion in static images, giving the illustrated bird a sense that it’s flying forward. Too many straight lines, like those in lettering of their brand name, can make a logo seem stiff or formal. Lufthansa counteracts this by enclosing the bird in a circle to soften their image and appear more casual.

2. Airbnb logo design

One of the most recognizable logos in any industry, Airbnb combines various graphic design principles to create a simple but meaningful travel logo that checks every box. The use of curves and circles makes them appear casual and fun, a good choice to mitigate fears for a brand that invites people to live in strangers’ homes.

This casual style is furthered by the upside-down heart shape, a universally recognized symbol for peace and trust. However, one of the most inspiring elements of the Airbnb logo is the subtle nod to digital map pointers (the shape in the center). Although not always obvious, this oval with a point is associated with markers on digital maps, hinting that the brand is in the travel industry even if the viewer has never heard of Airbnb before.

3. Tripadvisor logo design

Tripadvisor is one of the world’s most popular travel brands, even if they don’t offer long-distance transportation or accommodations. Because they’re more in the realm of advice and planning than actual traveling, they can experiment with more diverse design techniques that other travel brands cannot.

For example, owls are often used for education logos because of their connotation to intelligence. However, because Tripadvisor has one foot in the travel industry and another in the education industry, the owl is the perfect fit — as a bird, it’s well-suited for travel logos. The excessive use of circles also makes them seem more approachable, welcoming to first-time users.

4. Expedia logo design

Airplanes may seem too on-the-nose for travel logos, but there’s no better symbol to represent air travel —  no one will question what industry Expedia is in after seeing their logo. What makes this logo great is the extended line coming from the plane’s tail: like Lufthansa’s repeated parallel lines, the long line coming from the back of the plane makes the image look like it’s moving forward, adding more life to the logo.

Also like Lufthansa, Expedia encloses their logo in a circle to make the brand seem more inviting. If you’re familiar with color theory for logo design, you can also appreciate Expedia’s choice of colors. Dark blue suggests capability and trust, necessary traits for alleviating travel fears, while yellow is the perfect pairing to accent, as we explained in our guide to color combinations for logo design.

5. Azul Airlines logo design

With logo design tips, learning the rules is crucial, but so is learning when to break them. Azul Airlines of Brazil deviates from the standard best practices for travel logos, but does so in a way that still works.

Notably, Azul Airline’s logo is very angular, full of rectangles, straight lines, and sharp corners. All of these design techniques are reserved for serious and professional brands — they represent authority and stability at the cost of friendliness.

However, Azul softens the authoritarianism in two ways. First, it uses vibrant and pastel colors, which come off as fun and whimsical to balance things out. It also uses creative and unique visuals — the continent of South America reimagined in a cubist daydream. This visual helps people not only remember the brand, but also associate it with its main geographical area of operation.

6. Budget Yatra logo design

Just as Budget Yatra makes travel services accessible to low-budget travellers, their logo takes traditional travel logo techniques and gives them a “inexpensive” spin. This is a delicate line to walk — everyone wants a low-cost airline but no one wants a “cheap” airline — although Budget Yatra does so gracefully.

For one thing, they use a “cheaper” version of an airplane with its paper counterpart. Paper airplanes can get complicated, so they opted for a simple and easy-on-the-eyes visual style with minimal lines and details. Moreover, their accent color orange is closely associated with inexpensive and budget goods; clearly their logo designers did their research.

7. Velvet Escape logo design

As a travel blog and destination review site, Velvet Escape has different criteria for their logo than an airline or direct travel service. They take advantage of their freedom with their green coloring and environmental imagery — appealing to younger and more eco-friendly travelers.

But Velvet Escape still wants people to know what industry they’re in, so they maintain a few of the travel logo staples. Their logo revolves around the image of a bird, a well-used icon for travel logos, and they attach a long line to the back to show movement (just like Expedia). What they do well is blend all these elements together — the flight line of the bird doubles as the vein of the leaf, creating a memorable logo that readers can easily recognize.

8. Garuda Indonesia logo design

We’ve mentioned the travel logo trends of birds and repeated parallel lines already, but Garuda Indonesia’s logo demonstrates both perfectly. The way the entire logo comes together really emphasizes the dynamic movement of the image, furthered by the way the lines get skinnier from right to left.

It’s also worth mentioning their use of curves — the most noticeable elements are rounded and circular, making the brand seem more playful. Even the bird’s beak and “angry” eyes are slightly rounded at the corners to keep the logo from appearing too aggressive. The color choice, with both light and dark shades of blue, helps the brand appear both friendly and professional respectively.

9. Anywhere We Roam logo design

Another travel blog, Anywhere We Roam seems to take a page from Airbnb’s book. They also use the subtle marker from digital maps as their main image, a cue to onlookers that they’re in the travel business. Unlike Airbnb, however, they include the telltale dot in the center, leaving no doubt that it’s in fact a map marker.

Although black and white logos tend to look more serious than colorful ones, Anywhere We Roam keeps things light with its cute renditions of feet and toes. Their unique style for footprints not only represents the travel industry to first-time viewers, it also leaves a lasting impression in the minds of its readers.

10. Cathay Pacific logo design

Last, we have one of the most successful travel logos, and one that displays some of the best logo design techniques for the industry. Cathay uses a bird shape and repeated parallel lines like other travel logos, but they do so in a way that’s wholly unique and original. It’s even questionable whether that image is a bird at all — although that kind of mystique just makes it more memorable.

That’s the goal of all logo design, not just travel logos — enlist the tried-and-true design techniques, but do them in a way that’s never been done before. If you can manage that, you’ll have a travel logo that looks every bit as iconic as Cathay Pacific’s.

3 Expert Tips for Designing Your Travel Logo

What can you take away from the best travel logos above? Here are the top 3 tips to keep in mind when making your travel logo.

1. Flight imagery

Logos aren’t just about fun colors and animals mascots — logos are communication tools so that anyone who sees them knows what business you’re in. Essentially, your logo is a quick advertisement, explaining who you are and what you do.

So for travel logos, you want to include imagery of flight or flying to indicate that you’re in the travel industry (even if you’re not an airline, like the travel blogs above). The two obvious and most common icons are airplanes and birds, but luckily both have a wide enough range that you can still be unique and original.

Always consider what type of brand you want to be before settling on a single image or style. For example, Tripadvisor wants to come across as educational and wise, so they use an owl — still a bird, but a bird specific to their brand identity. Likewise, Budget Travel uses a paper airplane because they’re a discount brand — still an airplane, but in a style that caters to their specific business goals.

2. Circles and curves

Depending on whom you ask, traveling can be scary and nerve-wracking — especially if there’s air travel involved. To help alleviate these fears, a lot of travel logos incorporate visual styles that relax people, such as pastel colors, cute imagery, and, namely, circles/curves.

As we explain in our guide to shapes in logo design, circles and curves create playful and friendly appearances. Because the eye naturally follows any line it sees, circular and wavy lines come across as whimsical and fun-to-watch, as opposed to straight lines and sharp corners, which come across as serious and no-nonsense.

We see a lot of travel logos use circles and curves to mitigate the natural fears that come with traveling and help put customers at ease. At its heart, travel is supposed to be fun and carefree — a recreational activity — so many travel brands lean into this with casual logo design.

3. Use lines to show movement

A technique straight from the pages of a comic book, lots of travel logos use lines in “trick” the eye into thinking a static image is moving. As mentioned above, the human eye follows any line it sees, and that eye movement can be manipulated into making the image seem more “alive” than it really is.

With travel logos, there’s two uses to this technique that are quite common. The first is parallel lines; the use of multiple lines all traveling in the same direction suggests the object is moving, as if they create a blur, like a photograph of a moving object.

The second is the use of a single line, but done in a way that it attracts most of the attention. In both the Expedia logo and the Velvet Escape logo, the “trail” line is much longer than the other lines, making them stand out. The beauty of this technique is that you can do anything you want with the line: a straight long line makes it seem like the image is going faster and farther, but a wavy or loopy line can make it look like that object is dancing or having fun.

Regardless of which technique you use, make sure to put the line behind the object to make it look like it’s moving forward. In short, place the lines to indicate where the object has been, not where it’s going.

How to Design a Travel Logo With a Logo Maker

Now that you have an idea of what goes into an effective travel logo, the question is, how do you make one? Essentially you have two options: hire someone to design it for you or design it yourself. Both have their own merits and drawbacks, so let’s examine both individually.  Hiring a Designer

Professional designers know by heart all the tips, tricks, and techniques we’ve mentioned above, and then some. When you hire a designer, freelance or from an agency, you’re buying their expertise just as much as their time.

The problem is, no skilled designer works for free. The most glaring downside of hiring a designer is the cost — talented designers charge hundreds or even thousands of dollars for logo design.

Sometimes you can find cheaper alternatives on sites like Fiverr, but those sites have a poor record for delivering what they promised, and there’s tons of ex-Fiverr users who felt they were ripped off. The industry standard for a logo design is around $200, so if someone charges $5, you’re right to be suspicious.

Moreover, even if you have the money to spare, it can be difficult to find the right designer for you. Graphic design is a creative field, so there are innumerable artistic styles to choose from. You have to be sure to find a designer who both understands your vision and is capable of bringing it to life, but that can take time.

Design a Logo Yourself With our Logo Maker

If you don’t have spare cash in your budget for a logo, don’t despair. While in the past you may have had limited options, nowadays technology has advanced so that virtually anyone can design their own logo using an online logo design tool like logogenie.

In our digital era, design software is less about the technical skill of your hands and more about your creative ideas. You don’t need to master your brush strokes or pencil shading — you don’t even need steady hands. With digital logo makers, all you need is an idea.

Logogenie, and other online design tools, use templates to make design fast and easy, even for first timers. First, you select your industry from the dropdown menu.

We’ve categorized our templates by the needs and demands of the top industries, so finding yours is the first step. Our algorithm will then generate the top choices for your industry.

Simply choose the one you like and start editing. You can customize each template however you want, personalizing your choices for:

Main images Company name and slogan Font and typography Color schemes Text and picture sizes Text and picture placement Adding new icons Layering (putting some images behind or in front of others)

You can choose from our internal library of over 200 icons. A quick glance shows that there are plenty of the intellectual imagery we mentioned above, including trees with rainbow leaves, shield crests, books, graduation caps, and more.

If you want to use more advanced techniques, we wrote a quick beginner’s guide to using Logogenie. This explains all the nuances of the Logogenie interface, including how to edit individual aspects of the base image, change certain colors but not other, and perfecting your typography.

Using a DIY logo maker like logogenie, you can create a professional-tier logo in just minutes. When you’re done, you can buy all permissions and commercial licensing for $24.90, which grants you your logo forever.

While the template-style of design works well for first-timers, you’ll get better results if you bone up on some graphic design basics beforehand. Keep reading our blog for special design tips, straight from expert designers.

Feeling a little nostalgic these days? Miss travel? Join the club. While we may not be able to travel much right now let's take a trip down memory lane and enjoy some of the best vintage airline logos ever created.

Memory Lane: Best Vintage Airline Logos – do you remember them all?

Do you miss travel? Maybe feeling a little nostalgic? Join the club. While we may not be able to travel much right now let’s take a trip down memory lane and enjoy some of the best vintage airline logos ever created.

Vintage Airline Logos

Lately, I’ve been watching a lot of the popular History Channel show American Pickers (arguably the best show on TV…) and in one of the episodes the guys picked some airplane antiques. It got me thinking about the good old days of air travel and feeling a little nostalgic, and while I am too young to have experienced air travel before the seventies, some of the best advertising and logos of all time were created – including in the airline industry.

I went digging for old airplane logos and have highlighted some of my favorites. Some are from airlines still in service today (like United) while others are from now defunct airlines. They may be gone, but their logo lives on forever.

I hope you enjoy this trip down memory lane as we bring you some of the best vintage airline logos of all time.

United Airlines 1940 – 1954

United Airlines was first incarnated as Varney Airlines in 1926. Later the name was changed to United Airlines in the 30’s. Ironically, Walter Varney also formed the company (Varney Speed Lines) that would become Continental Airlines, which was purchased by United in 2010.

This iconic airliner has ferried passengers all over the world and over their many years of existence have used numerous logos. My favorite, however, is the one used in during the 40s and 50’s. This logo, pictured below, reflects all of the incredible design elements so popular in this time frame.

United Airlines 50s

You can see a picture of the original Varney Airlines logo here .

Current United Airlines Logo (2019 to present)

The current United Airlines logo, below, is just ok , and while it reflects the heritage of both United and Continental, it’s just doesn’t compare to some of it’s predecessors, including the one incarnated in the 40’s.

Continental Airlines Logo 1937 – 1960

This Continental Airlines logos that served as their logo from the late 30’s through 1960 is arguably the best of the bunch. It’s certainly my favorite airline logo of all time.

Continental, of course, is now part of United Airlines, and ironically was started by the same person who formed what became United Airlines (William Varney).

We love this incredible logo that features striking lines, bold patriotic colors, and art deco era fonts and design elements.

Continental’s last logo before being absorbed by United is pictured below:

American Airlines 1930 – 1945

In general, the American Airlines logos over the years really don’t do anything for me. Arguably, the best of the bunch is the one they used in the 30’s and part of the 40’s and pictured below.

American Airlines logo 1934

TWA Logos 30s & 40’s

TWA is an iconic airline in American aviation history. Formed in 1930 and eventually owned by Howard Hughes, the airline had a variety of logos over the years, but the one pictured below is probably the best of the bunch. The now defunct airline was acquired by American Airlines after 9/11, but shares a nostalgic place in American aviation lore.

We are also big fans of this version as well:

TWA 1950's - vintage airline logos

Delta Airlines circa 1935

Another classic American airline is, of course, Delta Airlines. Delta, officially incorporated in 1928, started in the crop dusting business, later moving into transportation of passengers and cargo.

Over the years they’ve changed logos many times including several classics, but my favorite is this one from around 1935, and pictured below.

Delta 1935 - vintage airline logos

We also love the logo they used in the 50s and which oozes 50’s culture and vibe:

The current Delta logo is here .

Hawaiian Airlines ~1940’s / 1952 / 1966

We are not fans of the Hawaiian Airlines logo since it started incorporating a flower theme into it (although we can certainly appreciate why they’ve went in that direction). For our money, their best logos were their early ones – specifically the one used in the 1940’s and the super cool and streamlined one used in the mid 60’s (although they could have dropped the “safety record” claim).

Southwest Airlines

Southwest is probably my favorite airline and their logos over the years are pretty interesting too. What’s interesting about the early logo is its simplicity. The stripes and a bold font. Nothing fancy. It also reflects the era of the late 60’s and 70’s colors…that ugly orange which I just love.

1967 – 1971

1971 – 1998

Southwest Airlines

We see the entry of the famous Southwest heart and the iconic Southwest blue into the log in the seventies and we dig it!

Nigeria Airways

The now defunct Nigeria Airways was formed in the 50’s and ultimately ceased operations in 200. We love this fun logo that shows a elephant with wings for ears. The whimsical nature of the logo coupled with the super cool green color theme makes it one of my favorites.

Qantas Airlines 1947 – 1968

If Kangaroos could fly they’d look like the Qantas logo which has undergone a number of revisions over the years, most of which still reflect some variation of a winged kangaroo. Even the current logo includes a kangaroo although it is must less difficult to clearly see it.

We are particularly partial the logo used by the airline from the late 40’s to late 60’s and pictured below.

Busy Bee Airlines 1966 – 1992

Busy Bee Airlines was a Norwegian airline with a fun logo. They didn’t own many planes, but they did have a pretty cool logo. The airline ceased operations in the early 90’s.

Zambia Airways Logo

Zambia Airways’ logo is in my top 3 airline logos of all time. This defunct airline ceased operations in 1994, but served as the Zambian national carrier since the 70’s.

This logo reflects all off the glitz and glamour of the early days of the aviation industry with distinctive traces of art deco. The clever use of the letter z that doubles as a bird is some of the most clever logo-work we’ve seen.

Finally, the bright orange makes quite the “pop” of color helping to make this one logo one of my favorites.

Zambia Airlines is slated for a relaunch, but it appears a variety of challenges have set it back , including the COVID pandemic.

Trans Brasil Logo

Trans Brasil was ahead of its time with the logo it used in the 70’s. This troubled airline started in the 50’s and ultimately fizzed out in 2001. It’s iconic logo is a must have on any vintage airline logos list and we like it to.

Iran Air 1979 – Present

Say what you will about the oppressive Iranian regime, but the logo of their flagship airline is pretty cool. The logo is inspired by the mythical Persian Griffin – an eagle / lion mashup.

Air France 1933 – 1976

We are so confused by the Air France logo….it’s simultaneously awesome and confusing. It’s like a flying horse / mermaid / wi-fi signal.

In reality, the Air France logo has its roots in ancient Greek mythology and is, in essence, a hippocampus , or winged sea horse.

The hippocampus played a role in the Air France logo for many years and several variations, however it is absent from the most recent logo . Originally, this logo came from another French airline, Air Orient , which was merged into Air France back in the 70’s.

Dragon Air 1985 – 2016

Dragon Air is owned by Cathay Pacific and from 1985 to 2016 this Hong Kong airline had one of the coolest airline logos of all time. The iconic red dragon with a font choice reflective of the culture is striking and one of my favorite logos.

Royal Air Maroc 1957 – 2008

This Moroccan airline was formed in the late 50’s and featured a striking red logo with a winged pentagram and crown. Pretty cool. The current logo is more or less the same logo with some smoother lines.

Iberia 1939 – 1941

Spanish airliner Iberia Airlines continues to operate today and while it’s current logo is vastly different than our favorite, pictured below, this iconic brand still lives on today despite a merger with British Airways in 2010.

We love their second logo, below, which was used for a few years in the late 30’s and early 40’s.

Iberia-1939

Gulf Aviation 1970 -1973

Today, Gulf Aviation is known as Gulf Air , but it’s roots were as Gulf Aviation. This Bahrain based airliner has a far different logo than its first logo, pictured below. The original logo has a petroliana vibe too it and feels more like something you’d see on an old service station. We love it.

Gaviation

Pan Am 1973 – 1991

Closing out our list of vintage airline logos is the Pan Am logo used from the 70’s to early 90’s. Oddly, while Pan Am has a special place in aviation history, it’s logos really aren’t that iconic – at least in this humble bloggers opinion. The best of them is pictured below:

Final thoughts on vintage airline logos

How about you? What vintage airline logo did we forget to include in our list? Of course, this is always subjective…but I think we’ve got a pretty good list. Drop us a comment or tweet us your favorite logo!

Please don’t tie the Iran Air logo to the current regime. This logo has been around since the inception of Iran Air, way before the disastrous 1979 revolution. It’s a logo of the Persian Osprey statues found at the ruins of Persepolis. Please do a little research before making inaccurate comments. Look up old vintage Iran Air ads from the good old days of the Shah who created the Airline. Thanks

Eastern had a pretty cool logo as well. I find the Continental logo you show to look kind of dark and authoritarian. The first Hawaiian logo from the ’40’s is great. I know it’s not your thing but I really like the Pan Am logo a lot but I’m likely biased since it’s still my all time favorite airline.

American Airlines is preparing for summer travel with new premium onboard amenities — take a look

  • American Airlines is launching its first rotating collection of premium amenities Memorial Day Weekend.
  • It includes a new front-row flagship suite, new bedding, and enhanced dining options.
  • The new amenity kit program will cycle skincare products and offer limited-edition specialty kits.

Insider Today

American Airlines is gearing up for summer travel with new luxury in-flight offerings for its customers.

American is launching its first rotating collection of premium onboard amenities over Memorial Day Weekend. It will be available on 300 international and transcontinental flights.

The offerings include new bedding, dining options, and an amenity kit program that lets premium passengers sample different skincare brands and products.

"We thoughtfully curate each element of the onboard experience so every customer can look forward to the time they spend in flight," American's vice president of customer experience, Kim Cisek, said in a statement. "Part of the magic of travel is connecting our customers to the people and experiences that matter most to them."

While most of the new amenities are being offered to premium cabins, main cabin passengers will also have access to new bedding and other seat enhancements.

Passengers in the main cabin will have access to 4K seatback screens, Bluetooth connectivity, and new charging ports. All customers will have access to 1,500 free entertainment content options and can use high-speed WiFi.

Passengers can kick back in the flagship suites with new privacy doors and chaise lounge positions.

Customers traveling in American's flagship suite seat will have access to wireless charging, Bluetooth capability, and multiple storage spaces.

Passengers traveling in premium economy can also enjoy new amenities like wireless charging, additional storage space, and privacy headrest wings.

Customers looking for more luxury can sit front row on the new Boeing 787-9 and 777-300 aircraft's flagship suite preferred seat.

The new seat offers customers additional space and storage. It will offer additional amenities for passengers' comfort, like a Nest Bedding mattress pad, a throw blanket, and a memory foam lumbar pillow.

The seat will also have Nest Bedding pajamas and an exclusive amenity kit featuring additional skincare products.

American used customer research to enhance its bedding in all cabins.

airline travel logo

American decided to offer dual-sided pillows to flagship first and business class after research indicated 75% of its customers preferred different materials on each side of their pillows. The new pillow will have cool touch fabric on one side and traditional fabric on the other.

Travelers in flagship business class can now enjoy slippers onboard.

airline travel logo

The slippers used to only be offered on ultra-long-haul flights.

Customers in all cabins will enjoy enhanced bedding, with cabin-specific offerings like lumbar pillows, throw blankets, premium duvets, and fleece blankets.

American says the new bedding packaging will save 25 tons of plastic waste a year.

airline travel logo

American collaborated with inflight textile company John Horsfall to create bedding from recycled materials. Nearly all the pillows, duvets, and blankets were made with recycled fibers, and filled bedding will be 100% recycled.

Customers traveling in premium cabins will also receive their bedding in a reusable zipper bag made with recycled fibers to reduce plastic waste from distribution.

International business class passengers can try out new flavors inspired by international cuisine and American Airlines destinations worldwide.

airline travel logo

American is offering new menu offerings to business class passengers on international US inbound and outbound flights.

Some of the meals include macadamia-crusted sea bass with citrus cream sauce, quinoa, toasted orzo, and haricot verts.

American is also offering enhanced dining options to domestic travelers in first class.

Customers can also choose from new preorder options.

airline travel logo

Preorder options will continue to roll out this spring for business class on flights from the US to international destinations.

Business class, premium economy, and first class passengers can pre-order all of the meals offered to their cabins. The main cabin doesn't have pre-ordering available but passengers receive a complimentary in-flight snack and beverage. They can also purchase food through the buy-on-board program.

Passengers in premium cabins will also have access to the new amenity kit program.

airline travel logo

American's amenity kit includes basic comfort amenities like a toothbrush, dental kit, eye mask, and earplugs. The kit will also cycle different skincare products and offerings in premium cabins.

American collaborated with beauty retailer Thirteen Lune to curate skincare offerings in the amenity kit.

The kit will feature high-quality beauty brands from Thirteen Lune's tailored collection. Passengers can scan a QR code in the kit to learn about each brand and partner featured.

Customers will receive the Thirteen Lune kit for the first few weeks of the kickoff to the new program.

FAA lifts temporary ground stop of Alaska Airlines flights after technical issue is resolved

Alaska Airlines Boeing 737 airliners sit on the tarmac

The Federal Aviation Administration lifted a ground stop for all Alaska Airlines flights Wednesday after grounding the planes earlier as a result of a computer problem at the carrier.

The Seattle-based airline said in a statement that an issue arose “while performing an upgrade to the system that calculates our weight and balance.”

The FAA initially approved a ground stop for all Alaska and Horizon flights starting at approximately 10:50 a.m. ET.

It was lifted just before 11:45 a.m. ET.

It wasn't immediately clear how many flights were affected. An Alaska spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

France, India, Russia, UK issue travel warnings over Israel-Iran tensions

Warnings come as Tehran promises reprisals against Israel for the deadly April 1 attack on an Iranian consulate in Syria.

People gather as an excavator clears rubble after a suspected Israeli strike on Monday on Iran's consulate, adjacent to the main Iranian embassy building, which Iran said had killed seven military personnel including two key figures in the Quds Force, in the Syrian capital Damascus, Syria April 2, 2024. Countries including France, India, Russia, Poland and the United Kingdom have warned their citizens against travelling to Israel, the occupied Palestinian territories and, in some cases, the wider region amid threats of an Iranian attack in response to a strike this month on its consulate in Damascus.

Iran has threatened reprisals against Israel over the strike in the Syrian capital on April 1, which killed seven Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps members, including two generals, leading to fears of an escalation of violence in the Middle East.

The French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs on Friday advised its citizens against travelling to Iran, Lebanon, Israel and the Palestinian territories.

In a statement on the social media platform X, the ministry added that relatives of Iran-based diplomats will return to France and French civil servants are now banned from conducting any missions in the countries and territories in question.

The UK told its citizens to avoid all but essential travel to Israel and Palestine over the “possibility of an attack on Israeli territory from Iran”.

In an update, the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office warned against “all travel” to northern Israel, the Gaza Strip, areas near Gaza and the occupied West Bank – excluding occupied East Jerusalem and Route 1 between Jerusalem and Tel Aviv.

Russia strongly recommended its citizens “refrain from travelling to the region”, emphasising security risks in Israel, Lebanon and Palestine.

“The situation in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict zone as well as in the area of the ‘Blue Line’ between Lebanon and Israel remains unstable,” its Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

Poland’s Foreign Ministry also advised against travel to Israel, Palestine and Lebanon.

“It cannot be ruled out that there will be a sudden escalation of military operations, which would cause significant difficulties in leaving these three countries,” it said in a statement. “Any escalation may lead to significant restrictions in air traffic and the inability to cross land border crossings.”

India’s statement covered Iran and Israel, calling on Indians not to go to the two countries until further notice in view of the “prevailing situation in the region”.

The Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi said Indian citizens who are in the two countries should observe “utmost precautions about their safety and restrict their movements to the minimum”.

Germany meanwhile warned its citizens to leave Iran specifically, saying escalating tensions could affect exit routes.

“In the current tensions, especially between Israel and Iran, there is a risk of a sudden escalation,” the Foreign Office said. “German citizens are at concrete risk of being arbitrarily arrested and interrogated and being given long prison sentences. Dual citizens with Iranian and German nationality are especially at risk,” it added.

Separately, German flagship airline Lufthansa extended its suspension of flights to and from Tehran until Thursday and will not use Iranian airspace during that time.

Real and viable threat, US says

The United States has restricted its employees in Israel and their family members from personal travel outside the greater Tel Aviv, Jerusalem and Beersheba areas.

An imminent attack by Iran on Israel is a “real” and “viable” threat, US National Security Council spokesman John Kirby told journalists on Friday, adding that Washington would make sure the Israelis “have what they need and that they’re able to defend themselves”.

Speaking to reporters on Friday, President Joe Biden said: “We are devoted to the defence of Israel. We will support Israel. We will help defend Israel, and Iran will not succeed.”

The top US commander for the Middle East, General Erik Kurilla, is also in Israel for talks with its military officials on security threats. His trip was moved up from a previously scheduled date “due to recent developments”, Pentagon spokesman Major General Pat Ryder said on Thursday.

After Kurilla discussed the tensions with Iran with Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant on Friday, Gallant said the US and Israel were “shoulder to shoulder” in facing possible threats.

“We are prepared to defend ourselves on the ground and in the air, in close cooperation with our partners, and we will know how to respond,” the defence chief added.

The Wall Street Journal, quoting a person familiar with the matter, reported on Thursday that Israel was preparing for an attack by Iran as soon as Friday or Saturday.

Al Jazeera’s Hamdah Salhut, reporting from East Jerusalem, said the Israeli army announced that it was preparing on all fronts offensively and defensively.

“A couple of weeks ago, the Israelis increased their alertness level, calling up reservists and bolstering air defence systems,” she said, adding that Israeli officials said they were prepared for anything.

Israel has bombarded the Gaza Strip since October 7 and sent in ground forces, killing at least 33,600 Palestinians and injuring more than 76,000. Hamas’s October 7 attacks on southern Israel killed more than 1,100 people there.

Israel has also stepped up strikes against Iranian personnel and allies in Syria and Lebanon and has traded near daily cross-border fire with the Lebanese group Hezbollah since the start of the war.
