What's Included?

Barcelona is everything you need in a holiday location, from its seven stunning beaches to world famous architecture and wonderfully rich Michelin star cuisine it’s a city that leaves you wanting more. Set on the coast in the north east of Spain, it is the capital of Catalonia, a region of Spain which borders on Andorra and France. The people of Barcelona are fiercely proud of their Catalonian location which makes the city a hive of activity with passionate locals who want to show tourists the best of what Catalonia has to offer.

The city was a blank canvas for Antoni Guadi, a Barcelona based architect, who created multiple monuments across the city which have made Barcelona a cornerstone of architectural modernism.

His most famous construction is the Sagrada Familia, a Roman Catholic church which remains unfinished since construction started in 1866. The awe-inspiring structure is unmissable and its shadow looms large over the streets of Barcelona with its soon to be tallest element of the church reaching over 172 metres tall.

Weather in The Mediterranean

Once you’ve basked in the beauty of Sagrada, head towards the coast and the world famous La Rambla, the city’s most famous street. La Rambla is a pedestrian heavy street running for three quarters of a mile just off the coast. Broken up into five sections, it is a bustling city which is over flowing with first class restaurants and classic Spanish cuisine. Street performers line the busy pavements and whatever time you visit you’ll be able to admire a human statue or a mind-blowing magic trick. La Rambla really epitomises Barcelona life and this one street will tell you everything you need to know about a wonderful city. Due to it being such a popular area expect a lot of fellow tourists trying to soak in the La Rambla culture.

After La Rambla why not pick up some local tapas, ranging from a couple of Euros to over a hundred. Tapas is the personification of Catalan cuisine, these bite sized goodies can be found everywhere you turn, with tapas bars on every corner, why not dive in.

Finally, after your fun filled day, finish it off in Barcelona’s exclusive nightlife. Barcelona may not be known for its nightlife, but that may just be one of its best kept secrets. Due to the vast array of different people across the city you can be sure to find a bar or club to suit you. From classy cocktail bars such as Dry Martini found in the Eixample district to dynamic nightclubs such as Universal found in Sant Gervasi, dance and drink the night away.

One of the city’s busiest museums, you will be sure to find a queue of people eagerly waiting for the doors to open. The museum houses Pablo Picasso’s lesser known work from his formative years, where he was developing into the artist we now know and love. Displaying a deep relationship between Barcelona and the city’s adopted son, this immense and astonishing display of his work is not to be missed.

Guided tours are available and workshops with visiting artists are available throughout the year.

Another one of Guadi’s stamps on the city, he along with Eusebi Guell created this area of delight as a way of providing upper class housing with a touch of class. Inspired by Hansel and Gretel, the buildings are quirky and unique and almost immediately unforgettable. Unfortunately, in the early 1900s the Barcelona locals were not as enthusiastic about the design with only two of the sixty houses which were planned being built. In 1984 it was made a UNESCO World Heritage.

Tickets can be purchased for less than 10 euros and pre-booking is recommended.

Barcelona Cruise Port Info + Short Stay Tips and Hotels

barcelona cruise ship passengers get off at the dock

In 2018 4.4 million passengers came to Barcelona by cruise ship, and judging by the questions I’ve got over the years about 2.6 million were docking in the dark (!).

So how the heck do you visit a world class city in no time at all?

The good news is the  Barcelona cruise port is close to the action. It won’t take more than 30 minutes get central and start enjoying the sights and sounds: but you’ve gotta know how!

Allow me to get you on the right track.

Where is the Barcelona Cruise Port?

The Barcelona port has a total of 9 terminals with 7 of them used by cruise ships.

The main cruise docks are Moll Adossat (terminal A, B, C, and D), World Trade Center (North, South, East), and Port Vell Maremagnum .

The area around the port finds itself very close to the bottom of the city’s famous pedestrian boulevard La Rambla . The street links two of the city’s great neighbourhoods in El Raval and the Gothic Quarter .

⚠️  Warning ⚠️ : Barcelona’s top two attractions must now be booked in advance .

You can book fast track tickets to both individually or get them as part of a discount pass:

  • ⛪ Buy now:  Sagrada Familia Fast Track Admission (skip the lines)
  • 🏞️ Buy now:  Park Guell Fast Track Admission  (skip the lines)
  • 🎟️  Buy now: Best of Barcelona Bundle (Sagrada + Park Guell + 10% discount code for all else)

You will not be able to book these tickets on site – lock in your tickets ASAP or you could miss out.

Most cruise ship passengers arrive at the  Christopher Columbus statue  in Portal de la Pau Square. From here there are various transport options which I’ll get into later.

Barcelona Cruise Terminal Map

Here we see the main three cruise ports in Barcelona.

The blue line is the Autobus Azul shuttle  and the pink line is the length of the La Rambla all the way up to Plaça Catalunya . Notice Drassanes metro station with the train decal.

Barcelona Cruise Port to City Centre

Moll adossat (terminal a, b, c, and d).

As you see from my terminal map  don’t attempt to walk central from here. The walk is long and it’s not such a nice road, especially if you have bags to carry and it’s really hot.

Once you’re off the ship you’ll find a shuttle right outside all terminals.

This shuttle is called the  Cruise Bus  (or the T-3 Portbus) and will take you right to the bottom of Las Ramblas where you can start visiting  Barcelona’s top attractions . It is adapted for disabled visitors .

The bus doesn’t run on a fixed schedule. They’re coordinated with cruise ship arrivals. The Moll Adossat – Colón line runs at maximum every 20-30 minutes . The 10 minute trip costs €4.50 one way .

Tickets for the cruise shuttle are bought directly aboard the bus (cash only) or online in advance (less hassle and no lining up and fighting for seats) via Tiqets.

For taxis expect to pay €6.00-€8.00 to get to the Columbus Statue (€15.00 to Plaça Catalunya).

World Trade Center Dock (N, S, E)

If you’re packing light you can reach the Rambla on foot from the cruise port in  10-15 minutes .

In all you’re just a few minutes from the Bus Turistic stop and about 10 minutes walking from La Rambla (and the Columbus Statue) and the Drassanes metro station (green line L3).

Maremagnum Dock (M)

This cruise terminal is dedicated to smaller ships mostly serving the Balearic Islands. It’s the closest one of them all and getting to La Rambla from here is about 10 minutes walking.

Maremagnum is also one of Barcelona’s top shopping malls, and the only one open on Sunday!

Barcelona Airport To Cruise Port

For the 58% of you starting your cruise in Barcelona you’ll have a few options from El Prat airport to the Barcelona cruise terminal and vice versa. Unfortunately the only direct service is via taxi .

This super-convenient bus departs every 5 minutes from both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2.

If you take the Aerobus , you’ll even have WiFi aboard for last minute planning.

The bus takes you to Plaça Catalunya where you can take the metro two stops to Drassanes or you can hail a taxi and get to the port for about €10.00.

The fixed taxi fare from Barcelona Airport to the cruise port is  €39.00 .

If you’re traveling in a group this is by far the best option for price-quickness ratio. Standard black and yellow taxis run on meters so it’s impossible to be ripped off. Night time and large luggage surcharges are normal.

Best Hotels Near Barcelona Cruise Port

If you’ve read my list of best areas to stay you’ll know I’ve recommend avoiding La Rambla for noise purposes – here are a few hotels hand picked based on blog reader recommendations and shining Tripadvisor scores.

You also may want to consider Airbnb’s discount homestays , hostels , or holiday apartments .

Eurostars Grand Marina GL

☆☆☆☆☆  |  Area: Poble Sec  |  Moll de Barcelona s/n |  Metro: Drassanes

The great thing about this hotel is that it’s as convenient as it is luxurious .

This truly unique glass and marble building takes the form of a transatlantic liner and blends in with the surrounding cruise port. It was designed by the same architect who did the pyramid entrance to Paris’ famous Louvre Museum.

The many terraces overlooking the Mediterranean are a highlight.

Hotel Catalonia Port

☆☆☆☆  |  Area: El Gotico  |  Carrer Ample 1 |  Metro: Drassanes

This boutique gem is famous for its  stylish rooms with hardwood floors .

A benefit is that’s it’s further up from the Barcelona cruise terminal so only a 15 minute walk to the beach . A highly recommended and extensive breakfast buffet. The seasonal rooftop terrace and swimming pool is pure relax. A fabulous 8.8 review on Tripadvisor doesn’t lie.

It’s also walking distance to a great deal of Barcelona’s best restaurants .

NH Barcelona Barri Gotic

☆☆☆  |  Area: El Gotico  |  Carrer Ample 31 |  Metro: Drassanes

At just 100 meters from the cruise port you can’t go wrong with this bright and modern hotel.

Even though you seem to be right in the chaos of the Gothic Quarter this quiet, no-nonsense hotel. Readers rated it very high in cleanliness and location: you’re walking distance to La Rambla, the port, and the city’s beaches.

There’s also an uncharacteristically charming service for Spanish standards.

Barcelona Cruise Ship Passenger Itinerary: 6 Hours

With my Barcelona cruise ship passenger tour all you need is the metro . So grab yourself a T-Familiar travel card : it’s multi-personal and gives you 8 rides for €10.00 anywhere on the Barcelona transport network.

These tickets can be bought at the ticket machines of any metro station.

Expect each person to use 3-4 trips.

Taking cruises from Barcelona with more time? Check out my full one day trip or  3 day Barcelona itinerary .

Stop #1: Gothic Quarter and the Born – 2.5 h

Let’s start at the Columbus Statue where the port shuttle has dropped us off.

We head up La Rambla on foot through the beginning of a little craft market and past legions of tourist trap bars : stay away! After about 10 minutes we take a right at Plaça Reial , one of the most beautiful squares in the city.

Soak up the sights and sounds here and check out the lanterns designed by none other than Antoni Gaudi .

From here we get lost in the labyrinthine streets and squares of the Gothic Quarter. It’s home to some of the city’s greatest sights like the Barcelona Cathedral .

Stop in to check out the impossibly peaceful Plaça Sant Felip Neri and its surprisingly   violent history.

From here we hit the area’s widest street Via Laietana and head down into the Born area, the other face of the old city that’s become a lively neighbourhood full of great restaurants and independent clothing shops.

Here we need to see the Santa Maria del Mar , another of Barcelona’s most beloved churches. In and around this area you’ll want to stop for tapas : these small traditional Spanish dishes are a must.

I recommend Xampanyet (Carrer de Montcada 22), a delicious bodega to try a local cava sparkling wine with some salami, cheese, anchovies, sausages and more. Expect to spend about €25.00 for a decent meal.

Another great option for typical Catalan food here is Nou Celler . This is a spot for Catalan ‘market gastronomy’. Expect to pay about €30.00 a person.

For more ideas check out my list of best restaurants in Barcelona .

🧑‍🎨 Want more of Gaudi? Unlock his masterpieces with the top Gaudi tours in Barcelona .

Stop #2: La Sagrada Familia – 1 h

Stomachs full, we restart the trip to admire one of the most incredible sights in the world: La Sagrada Familia .

To get there we head back to Via Laietana and jump on the metro at Jaume I (L4, towards Trinitat Nova) and get off at Verdaguer. From here we change to the blue line (L5) and get off at Sagrada Familia.

If you’ve bought your tickets online this is mandatory. If you haven’t you’re going to wait a long time, so make sure you’ve made the arrangements beforehand to truly appreciate this world class monument .

That said, even looking at it from the outside is an experience in itself.

Stop #3: Passeig de Gracia and Gaudi – 1.5 h

Let’s get back on the blue line (L5) and get off at Diagonal.

From here we exit at Passeig de Gracia and walk downhill in the direction of the sea. Here we see the origins of Catalan modernism and the two crown jewels of the city: La Pedrera and Casa Batllo .

Normally you’ll need about 90 minutes to visit either one of these buildings properly but you can get a very good sense of one of them using about an hour of your time. Just make sure you book online first.

If you haven’t eaten already there’s El Nacional (Passeig de Gracia 24), an elegant multi-restaurant dining space which covers all cuisines of the Iberian Peninsula.

Stop #4: Plaça de Catalunya and Back – 1 h

We finish off heading downhill until we reach the unmistakable Plaça Catalunya : the city’s unifying square.

If you’re not too tired you can walk back down La Rambla and after about 10 minutes find one of the world’s best food markets La Boqueria on your right.

Grab one of the delicious €1.50 fruit smoothies or try a sampling of classic Serrano ham .

From here you walk another 10 minutes downhill and you’re right back where you started at the Columbus Statue, where you’ll be able to take the shuttle back to the cruise port.

If you’re too tired for the last bit simply take the green line (L3) of the metro from Plaça Catalunya to Drassanes.

Cruise Ship Passenger Itinerary: 1 Day

For this itinerary I recommend doing the 6 hour tour above and adding one or more of the following:

Extra Stop #1: La Barceloneta – 1 h

Why not start the day off with a quick dip at Barcelona’s beaches?

Especially in summer a walk along the beach and a quick aperitif in Barcelona’s seaside barrio is a must. Take bus D20 from the Columbus Statue all the way to Platja de la Barceloneta (Barceloneta Beach).

Here we take a walk up and down the promenade for some  refreshing sea air . If you want a quick suntan or swim I recommend heading towards the sail-shaped tower (the W Hotel) for cleaner waters, but be quick!

From here it’s back on the D20 to the foot of Via Laietana to start the our visit of the Born neighbourhood.

Extra Stop #2: Park Guell – 1.5 h

The fairytale-like, surreal Park Guell completes our visit of Gaudi’s masterpieces.

This walk through Barcelona nature takes us to the famous lizard fountain, a bizarre column temple, and a massive terrace overlooking the city with its emblematic mosaic benches made famous by movies like Vicky Cristina Barcelona.

The view from here is incredible.

In my article on Park Guell you find everything you need to know about visiting, the history, and even the design but please: buy your tickets online. You don’t want to be asked to come back for a later time slot.

Remember that there is a bit of an uphill walk from the bus/metro so those with limited mobility may want to consider a taxi for this portion of the route.

Since the park closes late (in summer at 9:30 pm) I suggest saving this stop on the tour for last, to really enjoy the sunset. You could add this stop after you’ve arrived back to Plaça Catalunya (mentioned in the 6 hour itinerary). From here take bus 24 or the metro green line (L3) to Vallcarca.

You’ll probably be hungry after all that walking, right?

The ideal place for dinner in the classic village neighbourhood of Gracia , with it’s lively squares and diverse offering of bars. To get to Gracia retake the metro from Vallcarca and get off at Fontana.

If you’re looking for traditional Catalan food head for Bilbaro (Carrer del Perill 33). Here you’ll find an old school elegance that’s all but lost in Barcelona. Local couples out on romantic Barcelona nights and waiters dressed to the nines. Try the beef filet! Expect to pay about €35.00 with wine.

If instead you’re in the mood for something a bit more casual I suggest tapas. One of my favourites in the area is Polleria Fontana (Carrer de Sant Lluis 9), a hole in the wall restaurant that used to be a chicken store.

Some great dishes to try (and share) here are the grilled octopus, Russian potato salad with grilled tuna, and the always recommended potato croquettes with ham. Average price here with wine is about €20.00-€25.00.

Essential Barcelona Cruise Passenger Information

Make sure you buy your attraction tickets in advance online because lines can cost you hours.

I recommend this for regular visitors as well. You can save up to 20% off ticket window prices and skip the lines like a VIP. For cruise ship passengers on short schedules it becomes essential.

One thing to have handy to save time is a map of the city .

If you’re visiting with a European Union SIM card you’ll be happy to know you can fire up Google Maps any time. As of June 2017 there are no roaming charges for European visitors.

Visiting on a cruise from overseas instead?

There should be enough free WiFi around but cheap  pocket WiFi is available if needed.

Credit/Debit Cards vs. Cash

All European credit and debit cards should work without issue. Other standard Visa and Mastercard credit/debit cards from overseas should also work.

American cruise ship visitors beware: PIN-less chip cards won’t work  at automated kiosks. These cards requiring signature verification will only work with a clerk present.

I recommend you keep a little extra cash on hand in this case.

How to Get Around Barcelona

Public transport.

Barcelona cruise ship passengers tend to use the Drassanes metro station for quick access to Plaça Catalunya, Passeig de Gracia, Parc Guell and the area around Plaça Espanya .

If you prefer taking buses you’ll find various lines here. The D20 will take you to the beaches around Barceloneta, while the V13 will take you to Plaça Universidad, where in 5 minutes you’ll be able to get to Plaça Catalunya.

If you’re staying more than a few hours you should consider getting a discount travel pass .

Bus Turistic (Hop on Hop off Bus)

This hop on hop off bus is the best option for visiting the city on limited time.

Here you’ll be able to get a good taste of the city’s greatest attractions without worrying about getting lost and wasting time on the transport.

Remember that the Bus Turistic stop is right at the World Trade Center cruise terminal. If you prefer to continue ahead there is also one at Drassanes metro. Both are on the red line.

There are a ton of people wanting to get on so I suggest buying your tickets in advance to skip lining up for tickets. Buying online also gets you a 10% discount , who doesn’t want that?

Free Now is Spain’s new taxi-sharing app similar to Uber but using the city’s regulated taxis. It’ll allow you to get around the city with licensed drivers driving modern cars.

Yes, you could get the same service by hailing one randomly or going to the cruise port taxi stand but if you sign up using my instructions  you’ll get €5.00 off your first ride .

Keep in mind that you’ll need to download an app .

EU visitors should be able to do this with ease as roaming charges are now a thing of the past. For my overseas readers you’ll be able to do this easily with the WiFi aboard the cruise ship and have the driver meet you at the dock.

The good thing about Free Now is all prices are known in advance. The driver literally can’t rip you off.

The flat rate for taxis from the cruise port to the airport (and vice versa) is €39.00 .

Cruise ship arriving to the Barcelona Cruise Port

Best Hotels Near Cruise Port In Barcelona

Looking for hotels near barcelona cruise port.

Your cruise is departing from Barcelona and you thought it’ll be very convenient to stay near the Barcelona cruise terminal, so getting there with your luggage is a breeze. You don’t want to stress out about missing the ship!

The truth is that Barcelona is a very compact city, and in most cases you’ll be able to reach the cruise port within 20 minutes or less no matter where your hotel is located. And I know 20 minutes feels like “near enough” for American standards, for instance. But not for the Barcelona standards.

That’s why many listings of “Hotels near the cruise port in Barcelona” that you can find online mention hotels that a local would never class as “close to the cruise terminal”. Most of these listings have been written by people who don’t leave in the city, and don’t take things in account that a local would quickly spot.

Best areas for hotels near cruise terminal in Barcelona:

Montjuic hill.

Ok, let me start this post by ruling out an area that comes often recommended in other websites. The Hill of Montjuic is located by the Barcelona port. You see it across the water from the cruises docked at the Moll Adossat Terminals. It looks convenient even on a map, but… it’s not. For instance, the Hotel Miramar is often recommended in other websites because it overlooks the port.

But they forget to tell you that it’s difficult to get there unless you take a cab, and that it’s more than 10 minutes walk from any Montjuic site. Only an option if sightseeing isn’t in your plans and staying inside the hotel is all you want to do. There are more hotels in Montjuic , but they are located in the other side of the hill and they aren’t a 5 minute ride to the cruise terminals anymore.

Poblesec and Avinguda Paral·lel

So if you choose to stay in accommodations like the Hotel Brummell , you’ll have to walk to the main street to find taxis or the closest subway station. And despite its misleading name, the Happy People Ramblas Harbour is also here, not in La Rambla.

Avinguda Paral·lel is a big traffic axe that separates it from the Old Town. The Tryp Apolo is the closest to the cruise ship terminal. But the neighborhood where it’s located is nothing exciting, and to walk to La Rambla from there you’ll have to cross the not so safe Raval district . So again, you’ll have to spend money on taxis or time inside the subway to do all your sightseeing.

The Silken Concordia is further away, but it has the same problem. And what about the Universal or the Auto Hogar hotels ? They happen to be located in the side of the street where traffic drives AWAY from the Barcelona Port. And that means you’ll need a detour to get on the right direction, making it a longer ride.

El Raval is the left hand side section of the Old Town, spreading between Paral·lel Avenue and La Rambla. It’s upper part is lively with cafés, museums and enchanting plazas and medieval areas. But… that’s the area further away from the cruise piers.

The lower area close to the Barcelona Port is darker. Old dusty buildings, and the kind of feel you can imagine in a port district. There’s streets with prostitution, drug addicts and street fights. And more pick-pockets than in other areas. I have a list of Raval hotels , but most of them aren’t superclose to the cruise ship terminals.

Hotel Andante and Sixties Ramblas  (previously Chic & Basic Ramblas) could be two decent options in safer areas. Although you must expect to walk a bit to get to any interesting area in La Rambla or the Gothic Quarter. It’s a reasonable walk, but not “right there”.

And there isn’t a quick way to reverse. You must go all the way up to the end of the street, then take a few streets detour to go around Plaça Catalunya. And only then you can start going down la Rambla again. Such a waste of time!

That’s what will happen if you book a hotel in the Gothic Quarter side of it. The right of La Rambla. The side of the even street numbers. And that’s the case of the Eurostars Rambla , the Sonder DO Reial and the International Ramblas Atiram , for instance.

The Oriente and the Arc de la Rambla fall in the good side of the street, but they are somehow basic. Often not what cruise passengers are looking for. Bagués would be the luxury option that stays within less than 15 minutes ride.

Le Meridien and the Hotel 1898 are a bit further, but their main entrance is on a side street, forcing them to go through the Raval to get you to the port. Anyway the detour is short and they stay within the 15 minutes range from the port.

Port Vell / Moll de la Fusta

All the hotels that line up this avenue are on the side of the street heading to the Barcelona cruise ship terminals. Although most of them are in the high-end price spectrum. The most luxurious is The Serras . Followed by Duquesa de Cardona , Duquesa Suites Barcelona and Soho House . Hotel Medinacelli is a 4 star too, but it’s older and not as luxurious as the rest.

Ample street runs parallel to Passeig de Colom although technically inside the low Gothic Quarter. And the traffic also conveniently runs towards the cruise piers. There you’ll find two nice options: Hotel Catalonia Port and Hesperia Barcelona Barri Gotic .

There’s a new opening in the area for adults-only, The Wittmore . I haven’t worked with guests staying there yet, but I’d be wary of it because it’s in an alley that’s small enough for taxis to refuse taking you there or even close enough. And cruisers don’t travel with only carry-ons… Luggage dragging alert!

As for the area, it’s perfect to explore the sites and restaurants of the Gothic Quarter and the Born district, and it’s easy to take cabs or subway to the rest of the city sites.

Barceloneta

The area is great for beach and seafood lovers, but it’s a longer walk or ride to the tourist sites. And I need to say there aren’t too many options there. There’s the H10 Port Vell (its proximity to the Gothic Quarter and Born District would make it my favorite here), and further away the Hotel 54 .

I’ve also seen many people recommending the apartments Uma Suites Barceloneta Beach on Carrer de Sant Miquel 61. It’s located inside the neighborhood alleys but still within 15 minute ride to the port.

A special mention deserves the W Hotel , but not my favorite for many reasons. For what matters to this post, I’ll say it’s located at the very end of the Barceloneta cape, making it the longest ride (20 minutes) to the Barcelona Cruise Port. And it’s far from everything else, so you’ll end up taking cabs every time you exit the hotel unless you are going to the beach. If you are curious about my other reasons to not be fond of it, you can read my W hotel review .

AND FINALLY! Are there any hotels in the Barcelona Cruise Port?

Eurostars grand marina.

If you are boarding a Windstar, Silver, Azamara, Seabourn, MS Berlin, Grand Circle or Aida, for instance, you’ll be right next to the terminal access. Or at least, it’s very likely – ships might change their usual terminal depending on the number of ships on the same day.

It’s a relatively short walk from the beginning of La Rambla. But if you aren’t a big walker, you’ll probably end up taking taxis to explore the rest of the city.

But I’m afraid that if you are boarding a large ship such as Costa, Celebrity, MSC, Viking, Norwegian, Royal Caribean and Tui Mein Schiff, your cruise will be docking in Moll Adossat and there’s no hotel there. No nothing, actually: just the terminals. But the drive there from the Grand Marina is one of the shortest: just 8 minutes.

So wrapping up… Are there other areas where you should consider to stay pre-cruise?

As I said at the beginning of this post, Barcelona is a very compact city and no matter where you stay it’s unlikely to be more than 30 minutes away from the Barcelona Cruise Port. So if you don’t need to be 15 minutes drive or less… Sure! Stay somewhere else and make the most out of your time in the city! It’s fun to get out of the hotel and be right there where you want to be!

Check out my recommendations for Hotels in the Gothic Quarter , Hotels in the Born District , Hotels in the City Center , Hotels in Passeig de Gracia and Hotels by the beach .

Barcelona Cruise Terminals

Port of Barcelona cruise ship and terminals

The Port de Barcelona, located at the end of Las Ramblas, is home to 7 international passenger terminals and one of the largest European cruise ports. Its also the most important turnaround port in the Mediterranean.

Terminals A, B, C and D are based at the Adossat Quay, which is the furthest away from the city centre, so walking is not recommended. Most (larger) cruise ships from among Norwegian, Royal Caribbean, Celebrity Cruises and MSC dock here.

Smaller vessels can dock at the North, East or South cruise terminals, right next to the World Trade Center and Torre de Jaume I. The Grand Marina hotel is only a few minutes walk away, and the best place to stay when embarking or disembarking here.

Other Barcelona hotels can easily be reached by taxi or private transfer. Especially during disembarkation it can be worth considering a private shuttle service , as there can be very long queues for taxis.

What to Do and See in Barcelona

Gothic Quarter Barcelona

A visit to one of the beautiful cultural buildings of the famous modern architect Antoni Gaudi such as the huge imposing cathedral Sagrada Familia, Casa Milà and Park Guell with colorful wavy mosaic decorations should not be missed.

La Sagrada Familia , Gaudi’s masterpiece, is a real must see when in Barcelona. Be sure to go inside but its advisable to book tickets online in advance, as it can be very busy.

Parc Guell is another top sight in Barcelona, designed by the famous Gaudi in 1900-1914. Admire so many of Gaudi’s designs and beautiful mosaics in this park.

Wander through the beautiful Gothic quarter , one of the city’s oldest districts. It is not to be missed for culture and architecture enthusiasts. You will also find good restaurants there. Mercat de La Boqueria is the most famous market in Barcelona. Unbelievable how many colors and products you see here. Just walk around and let your senses be stimulated.

When you say Spain, you think of tapas. Delicious traditional Spanish small dishes that you should definitely try. Together with a glass of delicious wine you can enjoy one of the many terraces that the city has to offer.

Football fans will get their money’s worth by visiting the fascinating FC Barcelona stadium, Camp Nou .

Entry Requirements

You must ensure you have a valid passport to travel on.

If your passport describes you as a British Citizen, you do not need a visa to enter Spain. For non-British citizens, you should check the current entry requirements on the website of the Spanish Embassy.

Visit your health professional at least 8 weeks before your trip to check whether you need any vaccinations or other preventive measures. Brexit  If you are travelling to the EU, the UK government recommends that you have six months left on your passport on the date of your arrival to an EU country. You should also check when your passport was renewed. If you renewed a 10-year adult passport before it expired, extra months may have been added to your passport’s expiry date. These extra months over 10 years will not count towards the 6 months that must be remaining. The UK Government has published a website tool to check the validity of your passport under these rules:   https://www.passport.service.gov.uk/check-a-passport You can renew your passport online or by going to a Post Office with a Check and Send service:  https://www.gov.uk/renew-adult-passport/renew If your passport does not meet the criteria for third-country nationals, you may be denied entry to any of the Schengen area countries.  Please visit  https://www.gov.uk/guidance/passport-rules-for-travel-to-europe-after-brexit   for further information.

Cruise Trail

Cruise from Barcelona – the essential guide

Tips when cruising from Barcelona

Barcelona is a true gem on the spectacular Costa Brava. Make the most of your cruise vacation and spend some time in the city before you board your cruise from Barcelona.

Barcelona Cruise Port (Port de Barcelona) is easy to reach, located close to the town at the end of the famous La Rambla street.

We’ll try and help you make your hotel booking easy by breaking down Barcelona into different areas of the city that we recommend and why.

Quick navigation

Where to stay before your cruise from Barcelona

Barcelona offers visitors different flavors and experiences depending on where they stay.

Below, we list our favorite hotels in the most popular areas.

Hotel options in Eixample

The Eixample area is our go-to place in Barcelona. With a great selection of hotels in different price ranges, a lively nightlife offering great tapas and bars, and easy walking distance to the city’s heart, Eixample is a good family choice.

  • Olivia Balmes Hotel – this is a great 4-star hotel with excellent service. It’s bright and modern, with a large open-plan reception area and a small rooftop pool.
  • H10 Art Gallery – we love this hotel’s area, which is just a short walk from Olivia Balmes. There are plenty of tapas bars within the vicinity, and this 4-star  hotel is personal and quirky, with colorful pop art covering the walls. On the rooftop are a small sundeck and a plunge pool.
  • Hotel Majestic is an excellent, pricier hotel on Passeig de Gracia just a few blocks from Casa Milà. Hotel Majestic is an elegant hotel with a great bar on the ground floor and a roof terrace with a pool. Worth the extra price tag if you want an unbeatable location. And from the rooftop, you will get a fantastic view over to the Basílica de la Sagrada Família.
  • Hotel Jazz is a popular 3-star hotel located 5 minutes by foot from Plaça de Catalunya, where the hop-on/hop-off buses stop. The hotel has a great rooftop pool, clean rooms, and good food.
  • Hotel Sercotel Casper is an excellent choice to be close to the city park, the Arc de Triomf, and good biking routes
  • Hotel LLeo is another good 3-star hotel often used by cruise guests. Breakfast is simple but good, the rooftop swimming pool is excellent, and you are just a short walk from the airport shuttles and hop-on buses at Plaça de Catalunya.
  • Hotel Casa Bonay is a comfortable 4-star hotel with a great restaurant, Bodega Bonay, where the locals come for lunch, ordering a selection of appetizers and a glass of local wine. In addition, the rooftop beach shack serves up fresh summer salads, tasty local tapas, and renowned BBQ favorites like sardines, beef skewers, and roasted asparagus.

Hotel options in Barri Gòtic

With a stay in Barri Gotic, you are in the Gothic quarter of Barcelona, the historic old town. You can’t get more central. You will be close to the main tree-lined pedestrian street of La Rambla and steps away from restaurants, bars, cafes, and markets. It’s lively, crowded, noisy, and splendid. Stay here if you are a couple looking to be in the heart of it all.

  • Hotel Colón – a stylish family-run hotel with cozy rooms and great views. Ask for a room on the top floor to get a view over to the cathedral.
  • El Avenida Palace Hotel – a good hotel in a great location close to the main shopping streets, between Paseo de Gracia and Rambla de Cataluña.
  • Hotel Le Meridien – probably our favorite hotel in this area. In the middle of the old town, the hotel has good-sized rooms, excellent service, and a great breakfast. There is a fantastic bar on the ground floor with live music most days of the week. Do not stay here if you are looking for quiet! This is a lively spot in the middle of Rambla.
  • H10 Cubik – What we love about this hotel is its spacious, modern interior and fantastic front-desk staff focused on excellent customer service. This hotel is a winner, situated right in the middle of great shopping and within walking distance of many sights, including the cathedral. You will find everything you need, from the rooftop plunge pool to a bright, airy restaurant. Opt for a room with a city view, alternatively looking out onto an inner courtyard.
  • Hotel Barcelona Apolo – a large Melia hotel, a 20-minute walk from La Rambla and just 10 minutes from the Columbus Monument. It’s very popular with cruising guests as the taxi to your cruise port is only 10 minutes from here. It’s also a good choice for families as rooms are large and extra beds are available.
  • Citidines Barcelona – if you are a large family, this may be a perfect choice. Right on La Rambla, choose an apartment with your own kitchen and living area, with beds for the whole family.
  • Petit Palace Boquería Garden – located right on La Rambla, this hotel is cozy with a lovely courtyard. You are very close to the Liceu metro station. We have had mixed reviews about the service, but often you can find reasonable prices for the central location.

Hotel options in Barceloneta Barrio – hotels close to Barcelona cruise port

If you want to live near Barcelona’s fabulous beach, this is the area for you. It’s about a 20-30 minute walk from the center of the old town. However, local buses run frequently or hop on Barcelona’s metro system for an even faster ride. It’s also a good choice if you are looking for a hotel close to the Barcelona cruise port .

  • Hotel Duquesa de Cardona – This hotel is tastefully decorated in muted tones with wooden floors. The view from the pool area looks directly over the beautiful harbor. On the rooftop deck, they offer al fresco dining.
  • H10 Port Vell – another good hotel in the H10 Spanish hotel chain. A simple, elegant hotel next to Barcelona’s trendy El Born area and a 10-minute walk from the Picasso Museum.
  • Catalonia Port – a compact hotel in a small building, overlooked from all sides when you are on the rooftop terrace. But still, it’s a good choice. The rooms are fresh and unassuming, the service is excellent, and there is a great breakfast buffet. If you are a family with kids, ask for the extra stow-away beds, and you can share the same room. This offers good value for money for being in a great spot.
  • W Hotel – If you want a luxury stay as close to the Barceloneta boardwalk as possible, look at the 5-star W hotel. Architecturally spectacular, its sail-like shape is unmistakeable. It’s as close to the beach as you can get.
  • Eurostars Grand Marina – close to the port, this is an excellent, modern hotel just a 2-minute walk to the Columbus Monument at the southern end of La Rambla. The hotel will arrange your airport transfer and transfer to the port for your cruise. Enquire by email ([email protected]) after you have made your reservation.
  • Hotel Gaudi is one of our favorite 3-star hotels in Barcelona. It is a short walk from the food market on La Rambla and a short Uber or taxi ride to the port.

Hotel options in Gràcia

What we love about Gràcia is the peace and quiet just outside Barcelona’s main touristy old town. This neighborhood is full of indie shops, small cafes, and bars and is where you find the locals live. The tree-lined streets are inviting, with a slightly bohemian feel.

There is only one hotel that we feel is worthy of recommendation located right next to the Gràcia neighborhood:

  • Hotel Barcelona 1882 is a beautiful, elegant hotel with friendly service. The hotel sometimes offers its guests a free guided tour of the Sagrada Familia on Saturdays (check for availability). Enquire about booking your free spot when you make your hotel reservation. The very name of the hotel, ‘1882,’ is a nod to when Gaudi first started building this breathtaking architectural masterpiece, which is still under construction 140 years later.

5 Fantastic Ways to Spend the Day in Barcelona

So you’ve chosen your hotel, and it’s time to experience Barcelona. Below are five recommended areas of the city, each of which you can explore as much or as little as time allows. And in any order you like.

In a city with so much history and art, it’s a good idea to pack a pocket guidebook so you don’t miss anything. Alternatively, you can book a guided tour with a knowledgeable local.

The following daily itineraries will cover the must-see sights and a few hidden gems. Essential information on Barcelona Cruise Port is also at the bottom of the page.

Day 1: Eixample

Eixample is very walkable and easy to navigate as it is laid out somewhat on a grid system. As well as being Barcelona’s nerve center of commerce, this vibrant area of famous sights, restaurants, cafes, and markets has plenty of hotel options. Eixample is my favorite part of Barcelona in which to stay.

Start your day at Barcelona’s university. The inner courtyards are beautiful, and this elegant landmark dates back to 1861. Walk towards the fountain on Plaça de Catalunya and wander northwards along Rambla de Catalunya. This tree-lined street has super boutiques and deserves a little window shopping.

The famous Mansana de la Discordia

Turn right on C/d’Aragó towards the beautiful street Passeig de Gràcia. Here, you will discover the famous Mansana de la Discordia. See these three picturesque houses of different architectural styles, and you’ll understand why they attract crowds every day of the week. The most famous of the three is Gaudi’s Casa Batllo.

Casa Batllo, Antoni Gaudi

Continue on the Passeig de Gràcia to Gaudi’s surreal Casa Milà (La Pedrera). If you want to climb to the roof, then be sure to purchase tickets in advance, as queues can be very long. This will save you both time and money. We prefer to wait until visiting La Sagrada Familia for a breathtaking view over Barcelona.

If you are starting to get hungry, many good eateries are nearby. We recommend Tragaluz on Pasaje de la Concepción, serving many well-priced dishes, including classic tapas.

Gaudi’s Sagrada Familia

After lunch, head towards Antoni Gaudí’s Basilica of La Sagrada Familia, the church that exemplifies his architectural genius. It’s essential to purchase skip-the-line tickets before your visit, as there are usually endless queues.

Admire the cathedral from the small square Plaça de Gaudí before climbing the clock tower for a breathtaking view over the city.

La Sagrada Familia, Barcelona

Book a ticket in advance or, even better, a guided tour and learn the rich history, including the tragic end of one of the world’s greatest architects.

At the end of your visit, you can take the metro directly back from Sagrada Família metro station to Passeig de Gràcia. Buy a metro ticket at the station with your credit card.

Day 2: The Gothic Quarter (Barri Gòtic)

The medieval Gothic Quarter is Barcelona’s old inner core. It is well preserved from the Middle Ages and characterized by the main street, La Rambla.

The point where Eixempel meets Barri Gòtic is Plaça de Catalunya. This enormous, striking plaza surrounded by monumental buildings has a large fountain.

It is where all the taxis and hop-on, hop-off buses stop, and many tours begin. So if you are looking for a bus, this is where you’ll find it in most parts of the city. Plaça de Catalunya is also the starting point of La Rambla and, therefore, an excellent place to begin your day.

Barcelona’s fantastic food market, Mercado de La Boqueria

Start by walking southwards from Plaça de Catalunya down La Rambla, Barcelona’s wide pedestrian boulevard.

Take care of your wallet and watch the pick-pocketers amongst the crowds as you look up to admire the medieval facades. Hold onto your valuables if someone bumps into you or stops to ask you a question.

Head towards Mercado de La Boqueria, the best food market you will find anywhere. Spending hours at the little eateries and bars and sampling tapas, cheeses, or sweets in the hundreds of fresh food stalls is easy. Or grab an iced fruit juice before continuing your walk of the old town.

From La Boqueria, cross the street and continue down La Rambla, making a left on Carrer de Colom and into Plaça Reial.

This is one of the city’s busiest spots, with fountains, cafes, and restaurants. It is a favorite of ours for lunch tapas and a beer.

The Cathedral of Barcelona and the Picasso Museum

Exit the square on the other side and walk to the Cathedral of Barcelona, which dates back to 1298. You will walk through the beautiful Plaça de Sant Jaume, surrounded by Barcelona’s government buildings.

The tourist information office is on one corner if you need to pick up a map. If you are lucky, an outdoor antique market or street choirs will be performing outside the cathedral.

Enjoy walking through winding streets and old town markets to the Picasso Museum, about a 10-minute walk from the cathedral.

It’s worth the entrance fee to see the fascinating earlier works of a young Picasso. The museum has the best collection of Picasso’s earliest art from when he was just 14 years old.

Shopping, parks, and the beach – experience it all before your cruise from Barcelona.

Now you have two options.

For some relaxation, head towards Barcelona’s Arc de Triomf and the city park, just a 10-minute walk away. Enjoy the garden or explore the area on a bike by renting a public bicycle nearby.

Barcelona has over 200 km of dedicated bike lanes, but I advise staying away from the busy walking boulevards and keeping to the park or coastline on your cycle ride.

Alternatively, head in the opposite direction for some afternoon retail therapy. Walk along Avinguda del Portal de l’Àngel, a beautiful, wide pedestrian street with familiar retail names and our favorite shopping spot in Barcelona.

Finish your afternoon with a visit to El Corte Inglés, Spain’s famous department store. And you’re back where you started your fabulous day out.

If you are looking for a beach day instead, hop on the metro at Drassanes, just off La Rambla, and before you reach the Columbus Monument (Monument a Colom) at the bottom of the street.

Get off at the Barceloneta stop. You can walk to the beach within 15 minutes or hop off one of the local buses for a short ride that costs just 2 euros.

Day 3: Barceloneta, the Beach & Port Olympic

From an empty industrial area to a beautiful beachfront with a wide open boardwalk, Barcelona’s beachfront location, Barceloneta, has transformed during the last 30 years since the city hosted the 1992 Olympic Games.

You can reach the beach after a long walk from the city, but we recommend the metro instead, getting off at Drassanes or the Barceloneta stop. Sculptures, art, skyscrapers, and shopping malls now line the beach boulevard.

Walk along Rambla de Mar. This floating wooden pier stretches to Maremagnum, a lively shopping galleria and movie complex. Plenty of fast food restaurants and bars are here for a lunchtime snack.

After a lazy few hours on the beach, head towards Port Olimpic. Here, you can take a boat trip with one of the many companies offering guided sailings around the coastline.

Enjoy a whole new view of the city from the ocean. Alternatively, shop at El Centre de la Vila-Port Olimpic, a large, inviting shopping mall.

Where to find the best seafood in Barcelona

Dive into Barcelona’s vibrant culinary scene with a visit to La Fonda del Port Olimpic , where the city’s freshest seafood awaits. This beloved restaurant offers diners dishes crafted with care and tradition. It’s a must-visit for any seafood lover looking to experience the essence of Barcelona’s gastronomy.

For those seeking variety, Can Sole on Sant Carles 4 in Barceloneta and Ultramarinos Marin offer fantastic alternatives. Can Sole charms with its authentic vibe and exquisite dishes, while Ultramarinos Marin , set in an old bar, delights with fish and shellfish straight from the harbor’s fishing boats. Simple yet exceptional dishes straight from the heart of Barcelona’s seafood tradition.

Day 4: Montjuic

The park of Montjuic rises over 200 meters over the harbor and is a beautiful green oasis visible from the city center.

It’s a memorable day out before your cruise from Barcelona. Enjoy the baroque-style castle, Castell de Montjuic, that dominates the hillside, art museums – and, of course, the view over Barcelona. Visit on a clear day, as the view can be somewhat hazy.

Make time to visit the Museum of Fundació Joan Miró, housing the most spectacular collection of art by Joan Miró, the Catalan painter and sculptor and painter. Discover his vision in the studios where he worked. Download a map of Fundació Joan Miró here . The museum is open from 10 am to 7 pm every day except on Mondays.

To get to Montjuic – you have four options:

Take a local bus from Plaça d’Espanya. This is the cheapest option. If you are using the metro in the city, your metro ticket will also include bus rides. Check when you purchase your ticket. Bus numbers 55 and 150 (bus Parc de Montjuïc) will get you there, and the entrance is 15 euros per adult. Buy your tickets online here, or if you are a lover of art, we recommend you book a guided tour .

Mountain train (funicular)

Ride the funicular, the mountain train, which leaves from the Parallel metro station.

Montjuïc Cable Car

The Montjuïc Cable Car (Telefèric de Montjuïc) is terrific if you don’t mind heights! It’s great fun but also the priciest way to get to Montjuic. The cable car leaves the cable station at Parc Montjuïc.

Walk it! Yes, it’s possible, but only if you feel energetic. On a hot day, it will be tough. Pack a water bottle and wear good shoes!

Don’t miss visiting The Magic Fountain of Montjuïc, situated at the tip of Avinguda Maria Cristina and below the Palau Nacional. From there, it’s just a short walk back at Plaça d’Espanya.

Day 5: Parc Guell and Camp Nou

Visit this splendid park as a hop-on/hop-off bus tour stop. Choose the blue line starting at Plaça Catalunya.

Gaudi’s 30-acre park is a fantastic way to see his inspirational architecture. Gaudi himself lived in the mansion you see as you walk in.

Playful and full of nature-inspired fantasy, the park has beautiful views over the city. Be sure to buy a ticket to get inside the monumental area. It is well worth the entrance fee.

If you are an FC Barcelona fan, a visit to the city wouldn’t be complete without seeing Camp Nou before your cruise from Barcelona.

Camp Nou stadium - home of FC Barcelona

Visit the stadium and the museum, but get tickets ahead of your visit. It’ll be busy.

Using the hop-on/hop-off bus on the blue route, you can visit Parc Guell and Camp Nou on the same day.

Start early. The bus ride takes time, but it is a great way to see Barcelona outside the city center. The hop-on/hop-off buses leave from Plaça de Catalunya.

Best day trip from Barcelona

If you choose instead to substitute one of your sightseeing days in the city with an excursion further afield, here are our recommendations:

Half-day trip Montserrat and the Black Madonna

Monserrat is the spiritual soul of Catalonia. Located 60km north of Barcelona and characterized by jagged mountain tops, the name itself means “serrated mountain.”

The Black Madonna, the image of the Virgin Mary, is located at the back of Montserrat’s Royal Basilica, Santa Maria de Montserrat. You’ll enjoy this half-day excursion if you are a lover of art.

And remember, if you are making this trip avoid wearing shorts or sandals as you may not be allowed to enter the basilica. Good walking shoes and cotton layers to beat the heat are perfect when visiting in summer. Take a jacket in the shoulder season or winter, as the mountain air can get chilly.

Queues to enter the monastery are long in high season, and you will need tickets. A prepaid excursion with a guide will make it quicker to enter.

Montserrat and the Black Madonna, plus lunch and wine-tasting

To extend the half-day tour of Montserrat’s Royal Basilica and the Benedictine abbey, include a traditional Catalan lunch and a visit to a fantastic vineyard to try the local wines. Ensure you book in advance and have a guided tour of the vineyards and the wine cellars.

Getting from city to port for your cruise from Barcelona

Barcelona is the largest and busiest cruise port in the Mediterranean. Check your cruise ticket to be sure you get to the correct terminal. Getting to the port for your cruise from Barcelona is relatively easy. Here are your alternatives.

Private Transfer

If you are more than two people, we recommend booking a private transfer before you leave home for pick up at your hotel. Tell them when you want to check in at the cruise port, and they will calculate your pickup time from your hotel to get you there in good time.

Ask your hotel about pre-booking a cab. Allow time to get to the port. Traffic and queues are unpredictable, especially in the high season. Taxis charge a flat rate plus a cruise port supplement. Be sure to establish the price with your driver before you start.

Metro & Bus

From Plaça de Catalunya, use the metro to get to the station Drassanes. A short walk takes you to the Columbus Column. Blue buses (PortBús) depart to the port every 20 to 30 minutes. Again, check your cruise ticket to get to the correct terminal.

One Trip at a Time

Despite being the busiest cruise port outside of the USA, Barcelona hotels don’t offer the park and cruise options that are found elsewhere due to limited parking at their premises. So whilst it’s still well worth arriving the day before your cruise in case of unforeseen delays, staying at a hotel and then leaving your car there only provides a single option that we could find. The other hotels below are well situated for a stay before or after your cruise and if you are driving to Barcelona, check out the  parking options  here .

We’ve rounded up some great options and have done a quick comparison in the table below. As with all our tables, you can filter and sort the information to quickly find a hotel that is perfect for you. Clicking on the name of the hotel will take you to further details below, including reviews so you can find out what other travellers have to say.

Information in the table is correct as of May 2019, but as prices can vary, please ensure you confirm the price before purchasing. There is also a   map   showing the locations of each hotel at the bottom of the post.

Which European cities are trying to cut back the number of cruise ship visits?

Every year, more than 20 million passengers take a cruise.

Before the pandemic, that number was even higher sitting at around 30 million.

As passenger numbers look to breach this pre-pandemic number once again, many European ports where these ships drop anchor are re-evaluating their presence. Some are looking to ban them altogether, citing environmental, social and economic concerns.

The 218 cruise ships operating in Europe in 2022 emitted over four times more sulphur oxides than all of the continent's cars, according to Transport & Environment. The NGO found back in June last year that these toxic air pollutants from ships are now higher than they were before COVID-19.

And, with their benefit to the local economy up for debate, the millions of passengers they bring to Europe's cities each year are causing problems for the people that live there.

Venice wants to keep cruise ships out of the city

In 2021, Venice barred large cruise ships from anchoring in its historic centre .

Damage to the lagoon saw UNESCO threaten to put the city on its endangered list unless they were permanently banned.

They argue that the big ships cause pollution and erode the foundations of the city - which already suffers from regular flooding. The ban means that large cruise and container vessels can no longer enter Venice’s Giudecca canal.

There were attempts to stop the large ships before with previous legislation overturned. But pressure mounted when in 2019 a cruise liner crashed into a harbour in Venice, injuring five people .

And by the time of the 2021 ban, even cruise companies were on board. After it was announced, the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) said it had “been supportive of a new approach for many years” calling it a “major step forward”.

The reality of barring large ships from Venice has turned out to be more complicated than it may have first seemed, however. Without a new hub outside of the city's lagoon for cruise lines to use, many are still docking there years after the ban was brought in.

Which European cities are banning cruise ships?

Pollution and overtourism aren't just a problem in Venice, however.

The Balearic city of Palma de Mallorca looks set to reintroduce limits on cruise liners which were first imposed in 2022.

This will see only three ships allowed in port each day with only one permitted to have a capacity of more than 5,000 passengers.

Politicians in Spain have also proposed stricter rules surrounding taxation and the use of polluting fuels by cruise ships.

Barcelona - as it moves to tackle its own issues - closed its North terminal to cruises on 22 October last year. Around 340 ships a year will now have to dock at the Moll d'Adossat pier instead which is the furthest from the city's residential areas.

Following the closure of another terminal located in the Maremagnum and the introduction of a one-ship per terminal rule,  just seven cruise ships can now dock in Barcelona at one time.

These measures follow an agreement with local authorities to relocate cruise ships outside of Barcelona's city centre in an attempt to mitigate the impact of overtourism.

By 2026, the South terminal will also close and all cruises will operate from the Adossat wharf.

The Mediterranean is the second-largest market for cruises outside of the Caribbean and rising passenger numbers are putting increasing strain on local populations.

In 2022, 50,000 people in Marseille -  France’s biggest cruise port  - signed a petition against cruise ships, according to campaign group Stop Croisières.

Santorini and Dubrovnik have also tightened restrictions on cruise companies.

Where else are cruises causing problems?

A crackdown is also taking place at popular ports outside of the Mediterranean.

Cruise ships visiting Scotland will be charged a new tax under plans recently announced by the country's Green Party. It says the levy will tackle the "twin challenges" of emissions and overtourism.

Lorna Slater, Scottish Green co-leader, also said that she hoped the cruise tax would encourage companies to use less polluting vessels, claiming one ship produces the same emissions as 12,000 cars.

"Operators have been allowed to get away with polluting for too long," Slater added.

In Amsterdam, the city council voted to shut down its cruise terminal in a bid to curb pollution and reduce tourist numbers.

Moving the terminal outside of the centre looks like the most likely resolution. But the vote indicates the city's feelings about these large passenger ships.

Last year, local political leader Ilana Rooderkerk compared cruise passengers who descend on the city to a "plague of locusts".

Amsterdam introduced a tax on cruise ship passengers in 2019 - a move that saw some companies replace or cancel stops in the city. More than 100 vessels dock in the Dutch capital every year and they have become symbolic of local overtourism issues.

Do cruise ships bring in money where they dock?

One of the biggest arguments supporters make for keeping cruise ships is their contribution to the local economy.

But do guests on these giant vessels actually spend money in the towns they dock at?

Several studies have shown that passengers disembarking from ships don’t contribute as much to the local economy as you might think. With all the food, drink and souvenirs they could ever want available on board, the money stays at sea.

It's unsurprising when you learn that the world’s biggest cruise ship, the Wonder of the Seas, has a staggering 20 restaurants, a 1,400-seat theatre and shops selling everything from fine watches to high fashion. Depending on which package you pick, food and drink are often included and purchases are tax and duty-free.

An even bigger ship, the 365-metre-long Icon of the Seas, launched earlier this year.

A study from Bergen, Norway - a popular stop for fjord tours - found that up to 40 per cent of people never left the ship. For those who did go ashore, their average spend was less than €23.

More research from the Norwegian city in 2013 discovered that length of stay was probably one of the biggest factors in how much passengers spend.

The average port stay lasts around eight hours but this can vary massively depending on the itinerary of the ship. For some - like Barcelona - it can be as short as a four-hour stop.

And spending remains low even when passengers are given more opportunities to splash their cash.

The cruise industry argues that a passenger's average contribution to the local economy is much higher than the Bergen estimate at around $100 (€91) a day.

One way to bridge the gap would be to raise the passenger tax levied at ports, which currently tends to be around €4 to €14 per person.

The cruise industry says it is making moves to improve both its environmental and social impact.

Cruise lines were among the first companies in the maritime sector to commit to cutting carbon emissions by 40 per cent by 2030, according to CLIA. Some have even signed up to pledges to reach net zero by 2050.

The electrification of ports so that ships can turn off their engines and limit toxic emissions could also help. It is something Barcelona is factoring into its plan to move cruise ships outside of the city by 2026 by allowing vessels to plug in at Adossat Wharf.

Whether these targets will be enough to appease fed-up locals in port towns, however, is yet to be seen.

Italy has banned mammoth cruise liners from sailing into the lagoon city.

A brand-new naked cruise will be launching in 2025

The trip has been marketed as ‘an an 11-day adventure back to Bare-adise’

Liv Kelly

Some of us opt to explore the world by foot , car or train , but plenty of travellers are partial to bobbing between destinations aboard a cruise. And there are loads to choose from, from pickleball or Star Trek-themed voyages to trips based around murder mysteries, Irish music or Taylor Swift .

But would you ever board a nude cruise? Well, now’s your chance. Norwegian Cruise Line have paired up with nudist travel company Bare Necessities to launch a trip described as ‘an 11-day adventure back to Bare-adise’, according to the Independent .

The cruise, which will depart from Miami  on February 3, 2025 will journey around destinations including the Bahamas , St Lucia  and Puerto Rico , before returning on February 14.

While that’s already a rather heavenly itinerary, the Norwegian Pearl cruise ship also has plenty on board to keep you entertained while you’re letting it all hang loose. There’s open deck space, 14 restaurants and 14 bars, a large buffet area, a casino, spa and several nightlife options.

But don’t disrobe just yet – there are a few rules to bear in mind before you wander the starboard starkers. Cruise rules apparently require passengers to be clothed during the Captain’s reception and introduction, at all times in the main and speciality dining rooms and while docked in port.

You’ve also gotta put a towel down before perching in the stateroom, pool deck, and buffet area, and you can’t be nude in front of other ships in port, and absolutely no ‘fondling or inappropriate touching’.

Totally horrified or irresistibly intrigued? Prices start at $2,000 (£1,592, €1,862) for a two-person cabin, but soar up to $33,155 (£26,400, €29,590) for a three-person ‘garden villa’. You can have a look at the Bare Necessities website here .

Did you see that there could be an underwater tunnel linking Europe and Africa by 2030 ?

Plus: A Japanese town is building a wall to block tourists from seeing a popular Mount Fuji view .

Nearly 44 Million Travelers Leaving Town for Unofficial Start of Summer

Second highest memorial day holiday travel forecast since aaa began tracking in 2000.

barcelona cruise and stay

WASHINGTON, DC (May 13, 2024) – AAA projects 43.8 million travelers will head 50 miles or more from home over the Memorial Day holiday travel period*. This year’s total number of travelers is a 4% increase over last year and comes close to matching 2005’s record of 44 million Memorial Day travelers.

“We haven’t seen Memorial Day weekend travel numbers like these in almost 20 years,” said Paula Twidale, Senior Vice President of AAA Travel. “We’re projecting an additional one million travelers this holiday weekend compared to 2019, which not only means we’re exceeding pre-pandemic levels but also signals a very busy summer travel season ahead.”

barcelona cruise and stay

Road trips are expected to set a record. AAA projects 38.4 million people will travel by car over Memorial Day weekend, the highest number for that holiday since AAA began tracking in 2000. The number of drivers this year is up 4% compared to last year and 1.9% higher than in 2019. Traveling by car is appealing for many people because of the convenience and flexibility it provides. AAA car rental partner Hertz says Orlando, Denver, Atlanta, Boston and Las Vegas are the cities displaying the highest rental demand , with the busiest pick-up days projected to be Thursday, May 23 and Friday, May 24.

This Memorial Day weekend drivers can expect similar gas prices as last year when the national average was roughly $3.57.  Pump prices rose this spring but have held somewhat steady in recent weeks. Prices may creep higher as the summer driving season gets underway. The wildcard remains the cost of oil, and unlike last year, there are now two wars – in the Middle East and Ukraine – that could roil the oil market.

Airports are bracing for a spike in travelers. AAA expects 3.51 million air travelers this holiday weekend, an increase of 4.8% over last year and 9% jump compared to 2019. This will be the most crowded Memorial Day weekend at airports since 2005, when 3.64 million flew for the holiday as the travel industry finally rebounded post 9/11. This Memorial Day weekend, air ticket prices are comparable to last year. AAA booking data shows a 1% to 2% increase in prices for domestic flights. Several factors play into how much travelers pay for airfare, including destination, number of stops, and fare class. For example, passengers who book nonstop flights with seat selection and carry-on bags included will likely pay more than those who select basic economy with a layover.

Nearly two million people are expected to travel by other modes of transportation, including buses, cruises, and trains. AAA projects 1.9 million people will take these other modes of transportation, an increase of 5.6% compared to last year. “This category took the biggest hit during the pandemic with fewer people taking public transportation or not cruising at all,” Twidale said. “Now – five years later – we’re back to 2019 numbers. Travel demand has been soaring, and long holiday weekends create the perfect windows for getaways.”

Best/Worst Times to Drive and Peak Congestion by Metro

INRIX , a provider of transportation data and insights, says drivers leaving Thursday or Friday should hit the road early to avoid mixing with commuters. Travelers going back home on Sunday or Monday should avoid the afternoon hours when return trips will peak.

“Travel times are expected to be up to 90% longer than normal. Travelers should stay up to date on traffic apps, 511 services, and local news stations to avoid sitting in traffic longer than necessary,” said Bob Pishue, transportation analyst at INRIX.

Please note that the times listed below are for the time zone in which the metro is located.

Top Destinations

This Memorial Day weekend, travelers are seeking theme parks and entertainment venues in Orlando, New York, Las Vegas, and Southern California. Seattle, Anchorage, and Vancouver rank high because of the popularity of Alaska cruises this time of year. Florida beaches and cruise ports will also be packed. European cities dominate the international list. The top 10 domestic and international destinations below are based on AAA booking data.

Travel Trends

As travelers make plans for summer and beyond, AAA Travel has identified the following trends:

  • Travel Insurance : 51 % of agents say more travelers are interested in protecting their trips
  • 77% of agents say ocean cruises
  • 70% of agents say all-inclusive vacations
  • 67% of agents say river cruises

Holiday Travel Forecast Methodology

In cooperation with AAA, S&P Global Market Intelligence (SPGMI) developed a unique methodology to forecast actual domestic travel volumes. The economic variables used to forecast travel for the current holiday are leveraged from SPGMI’s proprietary databases. These data include macroeconomic drivers such as employment, output, household net worth, asset prices, including stock indices, interest rates, housing market indicators, and variables related to travel and tourism, including gasoline prices, airline travel, and hotel stays. AAA and SPGMI have quantified holiday travel volumes going back to 2000.

Historical travel volume estimates come from DK SHIFFLET’s TRAVEL PERFORMANCE/Monitor SM . The PERFORMANCE/Monitor SM is a comprehensive study measuring the travel behavior of U.S. residents. DK SHIFFLET contacts over 50,000 U.S. households each month to obtain detailed travel data, resulting in the unique ability to estimate visitor volume and spending, identify trends, and forecast U.S. travel behavior, all after the trips have been taken.

The travel forecast is reported in person-trips. In particular, AAA and SPGMI forecast the total U.S. holiday travel volume and expected mode of transportation. The travel forecast presented in this report was prepared the week of April 15, 2024.

*Memorial Day Holiday Travel Period

For this forecast, the Memorial Day holiday travel period is defined as the five-day period from Thursday, May 23 to Monday, May 27, 2024.

AAA Travel Agent Survey Methodology

AAA clubs distributed surveys to a random sample of their travel agents between March 18 and March 29, 2024 to understand recent traveler trends over the past 60 days. 186 AAA agent responses were collected from 13 AAA clubs (representing 97% of AAA membership overall as of February 2024).
