black sabbath tour 2022

An Intro by Rob Dwyer

Welcome to the Tour Date Archive!

Our mission here is to document every known gig date that Black Sabbath performed from their earliest incarnations as Polka Tulk and Earth to their most recent and sadly final THE END tour in 2017.  This has proved to be a challenging project requiring at least a decade of research that is still very much ongoing.  It is by no means 100% complete or accurate, nor will it probably ever be.  Still, it is our aim to provide the most accurate and useful database for Black Sabbath’s history anywhere on the Internet.

If you do happen to notice any missing or incorrect information on these pages, please feel free to send us an e-mail.  Since we need to confirm any new information for inclusion, please provide any supporting evidence you might have, such as scans of ticket stubs, handbills, posters or any other items that supports your claim.  You are also welcome to share your memories or even reviews of these concerts, since some facts may be impossible to provide in a tangible form.

black sabbath tour 2022

That said, I do try my give each and every contribution my undivided attention when research time avails itself to me.  I have greatly appreciated the input of everyone who has contributed to this research and will make those acknowledgements elsewhere in his section very soon.

Please be aware that your submissions and corrections will not immediately appear on these pages.  Due to the nature of our new database system, we must process these updates in batches.  I wish there were an easier way for us to do this, but unfortunately it’s the nature of the beast we’re working with (Gigpress).  Each update requires a coordinated effort between myself and Joe which is fairly time consuming for each of us.  Additionally, I’m still in the midst of converting my data over to this new system.  Once this conversion has been completed, future updates should be a bit more frequent and less painless for us to do.

Now for the good news!  We will be doing a fairly comprehensive update of the entire tour dates section in 2018!!  It’s been many years since we’ve made any revisions in this section.  Over the past year, I’ve added countless gigs, updates and corrections to the information we originally had.  We will also be adding additional show data (ticket prices, venue information, sold out show info) that wasn’t included with prior versions of these tour listings.

Thank you for your patience with us and for all of the great help we’ve received.  Cheers!

We’re always on the lookout for more materials.  If you have concert pictures, ticket stubs, or tour advertisements, I’d love to see them and use them here.  Send materials to [email protected] – we can handle just about any kind of file attachment.  One small favor if you send something via email.  Send two emails.  One with the attachment, and another letting us know you’re sending it (that way I can check my spam software filters – frequently file attachment emails get killed, and I need to rescue them).

P.S. – DO NOT INQUIRE ABOUT ANY NEW TOUR DATES!  As of 2017, Black Sabbath has already announced they will no longer be playing any more concert tours.  If there any exceptions along the way, they probably be mentioned on the News page first, as this section will not be updated on a frequent or regular basis.  Any inquiries about new shows will simply be ignored, so please don’t waste your time or our time in asking that question.

MOBILE DEVICE NOTE: The actual pages of dates might look really strange on your device, depending on what it is.  Given the current nature of this data, there’s no easy fix at this time for that.  Please use a desktop browser to make use of the tour archives if what you see on your mobile looks strange.

Sabbath Bloody Sabbath. “Can you believe we’ve been doing this for 45 fucking years?”, frontman Ozzy Osbourne said with disbelief on the penultimate date of their tour in Birmingham; no one can quite believe it. The release of their 19th album ‘13’ earlier this year marked 35 years since the last studio album with Ozzy – ‘Never Say Die!’ – and with reaching No.1 showing their long lasting popularity. First to grace the LG Arena’s stage were Cambridge’s long haired, suit wearing Uncle Acid & the Deadbeats. It’s not an envious job opening up for Black Sabbath with the early-comers mostly not knowing who they are but introducing themselves with overdriven guitars, harmonious vocals and just psychedelic-inspired rock it was hard not to become more open to them. Although not always with a perfectly flawless sound they made up for it with their Sabbath-esque riffs being a quick crowd-pleaser. The first sign of life from Black Sabbath was an almost chilling outcry from Ozzy whose figure flickered behind a curtain joined with the wailing of sirens which caused the double denim and leather clothed crowd to be sent wild. Opener ‘War Pigs’ got things going with the repetitive cry of “let’s go fucking crazy” from the overexcited looking frontman. Tony Iommi worked his magic on his famous red SG; Geezer Butler effortlessly strummed along and tour drummer Tommy Clufetos seemed as if he’d been a part since the beginning when laying down the beats. Age can’t beat Sabbath. They might be old enough to get a free bus pass but they can still lay down perfectly executed tracks with ease. Butler’s solo during ‘N.I.B’ would make even the most skilled of bass players envious of the skill he possesses and Iommi just sauntered around whilst pulling out solo after solo and riff after riff. When they fitted these in together, you couldn’t help but be glad that the Brummie guys were back together. Clearly glad to be home, Ozzy adopted the classic ‘we’re not worthy’ Wayne’s World pose while shouting “you’re number one.” What else do you expect from the manic frontman? He even drenched a couple of security men with a bucketful of water whilst running up and down the breadth of the stage getting the crowd to join in with waving and jumping. His stage presence resembled something a hyper 5-year old would do (minus the “let’s go fucking nuts” of course) but when you get to hear those renowned wailing vocals live it makes up for it. When they reached ‘Rat Salad’ we finally got to see the pure talent coming from drummer Tommy Clufetos and wow. Just wow. Nearing 10 minutes worth of awe-inducing frenzied drumming Clufetos had without a doubt won over the crowd. At the end he brought it down to just a single beat which then grew to the opening of ‘Iron Man’ with the entrance of Ozzy, Iommi and Butler. Joining in by singing the legendary opening riff was surprisingly Ozzy who along with the crowd seemed overexcited to hear it himself. Brandishing another first-rate solo was Tony Iommi; how does he even do it? Definitely the coolest guy in metal. The first we heard of 13 was ‘God is Dead’ and live, it fitted in perfectly with the old material no problem. Other newbies ‘Age of Reason’ and ‘End of the Beginning’ earlier on in the set wouldn’t be recognisable as new and fresh either if you didn’t know already. Constantly throwing out intense riffs, imposing bass lines, pounding drums and those unsettling vocals; everything those legends do is right. Threatening to end the show with an enthralling performance of ‘Children of the Grave’ the crowd were reluctant to let them leave by following Ozzy’s instructions to once again go “fucking crazy because it’s Christmas.” This paid off well as everyone got treated to ‘Paranoid’ with a small intro of ‘Sabbath Bloody Sabbath’ and now got told to go “ape-shit” which was aided by the falling of confetti and balloons. Their heydays may have been back in the 70s but the diverse range of ages in the LG Arena showed how Sabbath are still one of the leading and best bands ever to come out of Birmingham. Let’s hope they don’t have any more fallings out or legal disputes and stay together because we can’t have another period with no sign of Black Sabbath.

Sunday 29th January. The O2. Black Sabbath. So I first saw Black Sabbath 35 years ago to the month in January 1982 with Dio on vocals, Vinny Appice on drums, Geezer, Tony and the recently departed Geoff Nicholls on keys. Tonight it’s nearly the original line up with Ozzy, Geezer and Tony Iommi but with Tommy Clufetos on sticks instead of the contract disputed Bill Ward.

The shows starts with an impressive opening cinematic experience unleashing the beast that is Black Sabbath and we’re straight into their eponymous track. Its sets the scene for the next 100 minutes with the musical onslaught of power riffs, throbbing bass, pounding drums, Ozzy’s voice (still really strong) and an amazing light show.

What you notice with Sabbath songs is that’s there at least one other song buried in there too with alternative riffs and charges of pace throughout. The set tonight unchanged throughout the tour mainly draws from the first four albums and each one is introduced by just its name. There’s little banter from Ozzy apart from encouraging the fans to clap their hands, make some noise and go crazy which we duly oblige.

Considering their years the noise is relentless. Iommi proving what a master guitarist he is, switching pace multiple times though a song with his precise style providing those well-known riffs to the classics. Butler’s fingers don’t stop moving through the show on the bass. There’s no plectrum in sight as he finger picks and his short solo makes great use of the effects pedal to showcase the outer limits of the instrument. Clufetos on drums is a nonstop Tasmanian devil of a drummer with a sound that suggests at least four hands are on the kit coupled with his double bass drums too. His extended drum solo is impressive, allows the three old timers a much needed few minutes rest and is suitably lit with strobing lights. I was breathless just watching.

The highlight for me of which there were many was ‘War Pigs’. It’s a classic but brought to life with a fantastic light show. The set ends as you expect with ‘Paranoid’ but the band are obscured for the most part with some unnecessary balloons and ticker tape.

Great to see them again after all these years as I rolled back to my fifteen year old self reminding me of why I got into music originally, kick ass rock n roll. As a show and spectacular it was incredible filling the behemoth of the O2 with both sound and light.

Keep on heavy metal rockin’ y’all.

Well this was it, folks; the beginning of the end. Ozzy said it himself, and surely seemed to mean it. And so, opening with their eponymous song, Black Sabbath kicked off the first show of the tour that will be their last one ever.

The set list was stellar. "Fairies Wear Boots," "Tomorrow’s Dream," "Snowblind," the iconic "War Pigs"...classic after classic was delivered with tightness, precision, and seeming ease. An early highlight, however, was "Into the Void," which found Tony Iommi's guitar becoming heavier and more insistent, as this brilliant song demands. A crushing tune on all accounts.

"Behind the Wall of Sleep" was an unexpected and most welcome surprise to my ears, and Geezer Butler even slipped in the lines from "Bassically" before they went into "N.I.B" -- just like on the album! Brilliant.

Unfortunately, after this point Ozzy's voice faltered and seemed like it may be done for the night. "Hand of Doom" is one of my all-time favorite Sab tracks, but the Ozzman was severely off key at times. He had been doing alright before that, but he lost his mojo here and it took some energy out of the room. "Iron Man," as a result, seemed to lack some punch, but by "Children of the Grave" the band got back up to speed and delivered this rocker well. "Dirty Women" was the penultimate song before the requisite closer "Paranoid," during which gobs of purple confetti fell from the ceiling, followed later by a shower of sparks.

And speaking of pyrotechnics, there were several to be found throughout the set, including flames atop the amps during the opener and fireballs during "Children of the Grave." These, combined with cool video effects (such as psychedelic patterns, flames licking at the edges, and various grisly images) on the stage screen made for entertaining visuals.

Overall the band sounded good, and despite Ozzy's occasional struggles, he performed well and worked the crowd. It was a fitting end for a seminal group that birthed heavy metal, changing the music scene forever. Their influence will never be forgotten.

January 20th 2016 was the first date of The End Tour. The whole show was amazing. Rival Sons opened the show and they were very good. This is a band a lot of people are not aware of. They have been around a few years. They have a sound that is influinced by Led Zeppelin The Doors and a few others yet have their own style. All I know is I like them and think others will if they listen to them. Now on to Black Sabbath if you are a Sabbath fan my advice to you is get tickets while you can. They being Black Sabbath put on a show that I will never forget. It is the best I have ever seen them. Thier sound was spot on and the visual effects were amazing and the music was even more amazing. Ozzy is and will always be my favirot front man in a band. His vocals were damn good for the Godfather of heavy metal. Tony Iommi gutiar playing has only gotten better with age. Geezer Butler was on fire on bass as well. Their drummer for this touris an animal. Just one hell of a drummer and his solo kicks serious ass. Well what are you waiting for go get your tickets now. Or not and miss the Best Sabbath show you could hope to see. They played some songs I haven't herd them play since the early 70's. So if you miss this tour then you won't ever get to see Black Sabbath ever. My advice is get your ticket while you can.

Black Sabbath was an unforgettable show. The opportunity arose to see them last summer outside of San Francisco and of course I had to be there. Black Sabbath is classic and has stood the test of time. The crowd proves that with young kids dressed in all black to happy middle aged couples in their Sabbath tees from the 70s. Their music still speaks to a broad range of people, youth and adults alike. The outdoor venue was a perfect spot to see Ozzy and the band. He has recently gotten sober and sounds leaps and bounds better than ten years ago. His voice has some serious power behind it. The band played phenomenally as well. They played all their staples from War Pigs to Paranoid. The entire crowd was pumped up. Everyone was moving and singing along. The energy was just right. It's important to remember that these guys started in 1969 and they are still killing it.

By the end of the show no one was ready to go home. Sabbath proves that they still know how to get a crowd wild, even if they left some of their old antics in the past. As long as Black Sabbath is touring it is a show worth seeing. They are unforgettable. The 'Prince of Darkness' still knows how to rock.

Saw Black Sabbath "The End" show for the second time at Jiffy Lube Live in Virginia. I saw the beginning of this tour in December, 2013 in the Czech Republic. This show was very good. The lights and big screens did well to give the audience the experience that only Black Sabbath can bring. Ozzy was good and never seems to tire. Tony was outstanding and with his recent cancer I am amazed. Tony is a machine! Geezer was his heavy bass self and can still tear it up. I think I am more impressed by the drummer now then I was the first time I saw him. He is incredible! This show was all old Sabbath and it really struck me how some of these songs we pushing 50 years and still just as fresh and heavy as the day they were recorded. I only wish they had played some of 13 at this show. They played 14 songs verse the 16 they did during the first bit of this extended tour. I will have to concede it was nice to hear some deeper tracks. All in all another great Sabbath show!! how many more do they have, is this really the END?

This is the first time I've seen Black Sabbath. Although, I've listened to this group for 43 years. There is not one moment I did not enjoy. Ozzy was extremely friendly with his audience and had all of us involved. He still has a lot of rock and roll in him. You will be amazed and awe struck by the drum solo that went on forever. Amazing, totally amazing. Great old songs, fantastic light show. I still can't believe I was there. You will be sorry if you don't see "The End". Very hard to say goodbye to this iconic band. Thanks Ozzy and the rest of the guys for a show well done. The critics aren't beating Ozzy up but pointing out he can't sing the high notes any more. They should be reviewing what is now and not what 50 years ago was. We all age and things change. For a 67 year old man, Ozzy rocked the hell out of the crowd. I think he wore us out before they wore out. Magnificent show. Don't miss it.

Absolutely first class! Ozzy still sounded like he did in 1970 and can still get the crowds adrenaline going. Having seen a number of bands and artists of legendary status, including the amazing Jerry Lee Lewis, I never thought I'd see someone who held a crowd any better ... until I saw Black Sabbath.

Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler, the same as Ozzy, still had that same talent and ability to entertain as they did 47 years ago.

However, the drummer, Tony, really stole the show with the mid-show drum solo! That's a drum solo that I don't think ANYONE could match!

Probably the greatest gig I'll ever have the joy of seeing and without a doubt one I'll never ever forget! A great crown in Glasgow for the greatest band in the world!

jackblack58’s profile image

First time seeing Sabbath and I have to admit the opening band, which was Rival Sons, were pretty good. As for Black Sabbath, they absolutely blew the crowd away. The weight of Iommi's riffs cannot be described, the new drummer that replaced Bill Ward was also experienced and skilled. Butler's delicious bass solos during certain songs really contributed to the creation of the feeling you get when you're listening to Black Sabbath. Ozzy didn't exactly sound the way he sounded 40 years ago (at least not vocally), but his voice had the same effect on the crowd. His energetic cheering also motivated the crowd and made everyone go nuts. Overall probably one of the best concerts I've ever been to.

LeeSenseiLeon’s profile image

What an excellent gig, but I have one major complaint.

The band was brilliant, Tony and Geezer played fantastic, Ozzy's was excellent, his voice is still superb. The support band Rival Sons where great, the 3Arena is an excellent venue, with excellent staff.

What almost ruined it for me were all the people with their mobile phones, recording the show. I was fairly close to the front but I still had to keep moving to be able to avoid mobile phones obscuring my view.

I see people are streaming the show live... That really is annoying and basically spoils a live show for me.

I might not bother doing big gigs, rather go to smaller ones where there is not such a problem with mobile phones.

Watch: OZZY OSBOURNE And TONY IOMMI Reunite To Play BLACK SABBATH Classic At Closing Of 2022 'Commonwealth Games'

BLACK SABBATH singer Ozzy Osbourne and guitarist Tony Iommi reunited earlier today (Monday, August 8) in their original hometown of Birmingham, England to perform the band's classic song "Paranoid" — preceded by a truncated version of "Iron Man" — at the closing of the city's Commonwealth Games . They were joined by two musicians from the band's final tour, Adam Wakeman , who played bass and keyboards, and drummer Tommy Clufetos .

A few years ago, Osbourne said that he was open to the possibility of a SABBATH reunion at the Commonwealth Games , telling ITV that it "would be fantastic" to play at the the opening ceremony for the 2022 Games. "With BLACK SABBATH or on my own," he said at the time.

Late last month, Iommi took part in the Commonwealth Games opening ceremony. Iommi and acclaimed saxophonist Soweto Kinch led a "dream sequence" piece, titled "Hear My Voice" , based on the lead track from the 2020 film "Trial Of The Chicago Seven" at the event on July 28. After Tony and Soweto played an extended instrumental lead-in, they were joined by the City Of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and a 700-strong community choir.

The ceremony took place at Alexander Stadium in front of an audience of more than 30,000, with the event also being broadcast live on BBC One and iPlayer to an estimated global television audience of one billion.

Headlining the ceremony was the new wave group DURAN DURAN , with additional appearances by some of the city's most celebrated artists under the musical direction of rapper, artist and educator Joshua "RTKal" Holness .

After the ceremony, Ozzy tweeted: "@TonyIommi , I was really proud to see you tonight at the opening of the Commonwealth Games in our home town of Birmingham".

Earlier that week, Iommi talked to BirminghamWorld about the pressure of performance for such a large audience.

"A billion people tuning in is a huge figure," he said. "It's going to be seen not just across the Commonwealth but throughout the world. We really have to do Birmingham proud.

"Representing Brum is a great honor and I'm bursting with pride to be doing it. I've flown the flag for Birmingham all of my life because it's my city and it's given me wonderful opportunities.

"I like to think that BLACK SABBATH helped to put Birmingham on the map musically, and it's great now that the Games ceremony will feature so many talented people from the city. It means a hell of a lot to me. But I have to admit, there'll be a bit of stage fright on the night. I haven't played onstage at a big show for five years since the final SABBATH show in February 2017."

The Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games saw around 4,500 athletes from 72 nations and territories compete in 19 sports and eight para-sports across 15 competition venues from July 28 July until August 8.

Last year, Iommi was asked by The Mercury News about the possibility of another BLACK SABBATH tour at some point in the not-too-distant future. He laughed and replied: "I wouldn't think so. But it's a strange thing with SABBATH — how many times we thought we were with Ozzy , then we had [ Ronnie James ] Dio , then back to Ozzy , then Dio again, and then Ian Gillan and Tony Martin and Dio and back to Tony Martin . It's gone backwards and forwards at different stages. So, you just never know.

"I think it's highly unlikely that we'd get back onstage again," he said. "It certainly wouldn't be touring. We'd only do so many shows, if anything.

"I would like to play with the guys again. But I can't see that happening.

"The reason we stopped touring in the first place was basically my fault, because I had to be careful of my health," Iommi explained. "When you book a tour — and it's always an 18-month tour — it doesn't sound a lot when you talk about it at first. But when you get out there, and you are touring, it's bloody hard work. And it wasn't particularly good for my health, because of the blood cancer. So, I said, 'Look, you know, this should the last tour, I think.' But I really do miss it. I really miss playing onstage. I miss seeing the audience."

Iommi revealed his cancer diagnosis in early 2012, shortly after SABBATH announced a reunion tour and album. He underwent treatment throughout the recording of the disc, titled "13" , and the subsequent tour to promote it.

Tony Iommi: 2022 Black Sabbath reunion would be a “great thing to do”

After Ozzy revealed he’s open to the idea of Black Sabbath reforming in 2022 to mark Birmingham’s Commonwealth Games, Tony Iommi says it would be a “great thing to do”

black sabbath tour 2022

Earlier this month, Ozzy Osbourne teased a potential Black Sabbath reunion to mark the 2022 Commonwealth Games in the band’s home town of Birmingham.

Sabbath brought the curtain down on their career at the city's Genting Arena in February 2017, but asked by ITV News if he’d considered playing at the opening ceremony in four year's time, the 2018 Metal Hammer Golden God said: “Yeah, that would be fantastic. With Black Sabbath or on my own. I’d like to do that. We’re all Brummies after all.”

Now, guitarist Tony Iommi says it’s something he would consider if the chance arose.

He tells Birmingham Live : “I think that it would be a great thing to do to help represent Birmingham. I’m up for it! Let’s see what happens!”

Iommi previously reported it was "possible" that they could make festival appearances following their farewell tour – although in January, bassist Geezer Butler seemed to pour cold water on the idea.

Asked by Full Metal Jackie if it was likely that the band could get back together for one-off shows or studio work, Butler replied: “Not very likely at all. I think  Ozzy is going out on his farewell tour , so that will be him touring for the next two or three years.

“So I don’t think there will be any chance of doing any one-offs or anything like that – which I’m fine with. We went out on a high, and it’s best not to drag it out.”

Black Sabbath’s Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi Reunite for Commonwealth Games

By Kory Grow

Two of Black Sabbath ’s original iron men — Ozzy Osbourne and guitarist Tony Iommi — made a surprise reunion in their hometown of Birmingham, England, on Monday night with a performance at the city’s Commonwealth Games. They performed their classic “Paranoid” alongside two musicians who joined them on their final tour, The End: Adam Wakeman, who played bass and keyboards, and drummer Tommy Clufetos.

After teasing the intro to “Iron Man” with Osbourne bellowing “I am Iron Man” backstage, the group sparked up “Paranoid.” Osbourne rose up from the stage to the deafening cheers of the stadium. His voice sounded strong as he fed off the energy, leading rounds of clapping along as fireworks burst around the venue. Iommi’s riffing and solos sounded crisp and inspired.

Both musicians wore black, as Osbourne’s peacoat fanned out in the breeze. With the fireworks both around the band and onstage, it made for a dramatic moment celebrating their hometown.

Osbourne teased the possibility of a reunion at the Commonwealth Games a few years ago, noting his excitement when ITV asked him if he’d consider playing the opening ceremony for the 2022 Games. “Yes, that would be fantastic,” he said, according to Blabbermouth . “With Black Sabbath or on my own.”

Iommi had opened the Commonwealth Games, which include swimming, a triathlon, boxing, and rugby sevens, among other sports, on July 28, playing a song called “Hear My Voice” with London-born saxophonist and rapper Soweto Kinch. The track featured Iommi’s bluesy guitar solos over New Age strings’ and Kinch’s saxophone lines.

Osbourne’s last time onstage was with Post Malone for a performance of their duet, “Take What You Want” at the 2019 American Music awards. His last full concert was a headlining Ozzfest gig on New Year’s Eve 2018.

The pair formed Black Sabbath with bassist Geezer Butler and drummer Bill Ward in Birmingham in 1968 and released a string of heavy metal-defining albums together until 1979 when the group dismissed Osbourne. They reunited several times over the years and recently concluded a farewell tour, The End , at the city’s Genting Arena on Feb. 4, 2017.

At the time, Osbourne had teased the audience. “Are you having fun?” he said, according to Rolling Stone’s review. “I nearly said, ‘Should we come back and do it again?’ [ Pregnant pause ] We’re not.” The evening featured a set list that included songs from throughout Osbourne’s first tenure fronting the group, including “Black Sabbath,” “Paranoid,” and “Children of the Grave.”

Editor’s picks

The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.

Months later, Osbourne told Rolling Stone that the gig was “very emotional.” “I couldn’t speak,” he said. “Because I thought if I start talking I’ll end up in fucking tears. That’s hardly the Prince of Darkness, being seen crying.”

“I’m glad we finished on a high note,” Butler said. “I’m glad that it’s finished now.”

After the show, the band recorded extra songs for what was dubbed “The Angelic Sessions,” extra footage for the concert film, The End . After those were finished, they thought they were done. “It was so weird saying goodbye after the sessions,” Iommi said. “Nobody really knew what to say to each other. It was a bit embarrassing really. I think we just sort of said, ‘All right, I’m going.'”

Although Osbourne had called the gig the band’s “final show” onstage that night, Iommi and Butler had left the door open to making another album or playing a one-off gig. Meanwhile, Osbourne launched his own farewell tour in 2018. He had to cut it short, however, after he contracted a staph infection and fell in the middle of the night aggravating an old spinal injury. He has since revealed a diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease but has long said he was planning on returning to the stage.

Osbourne released an album, Ordinary Man , right before the pandemic started in 2020 and has plans to put out a new album, Patient Number Nine , this fall. That album features two songs, “Degradation Rules” and “No Escape From Now,” which feature Iommi’s songwriting and guitar playing.

About Black Sabbath

Black Sabbath were an English rock band formed in Birmingham in 1968 by guitarist Tony Iommi, drummer Bill Ward, bassist Geezer Butler and vocalist Ozzy Osbourne. They are often cited as pioneers of heavy metal music. The band helped define the genre with releases such as Black Sabbath (1970), Paranoid (1970), and Master of Reality (1971). The band had multiple line-up changes following Osbourne's departure in 1979, with Iommi being the only constant member throughout its history.

After previous iterations of the group called the Polka Tulk Blues Band and Earth, the band settled on the name Black Sabbath in 1969. They distinguished themselves through occult themes with horror-inspired lyrics and tuned-down guitars. Signing to Philips Records in November 1969, they released their first single, "Evil Woman" in January 1970. Their debut album, Black Sabbath , was released the following month. Though it received a negative critical response, the album was a commercial success, leading to a follow-up record, Paranoid , later in 1970. The band's popularity grew, and by 1973's Sabbath Bloody Sabbath , critics were starting to respond favourably.

Osbourne's excessive substance abuse led to his firing in 1979. He was replaced by former Rainbow vocalist Ronnie James Dio. Following two albums with Dio, Black Sabbath endured many personnel changes in the 1980s and 1990s that included vocalists Ian Gillan, Glenn Hughes, Ray Gillen and Tony Martin, as well as several drummers and bassists. Martin, who replaced Gillen in 1987, was the second longest serving vocalist and recorded three albums with Black Sabbath before his dismissal in 1991. That same year, Iommi and Butler were rejoined by Dio and drummer Vinny Appice to record Dehumanizer (1992). After two more studio albums with Martin, who replaced Dio in 1993, the band's original line-up reunited in 1997 and released a live album Reunion the following year; they continued to tour occasionally until 2005. Other than various back catalogue reissues and compilation albums, and the Mob Rules -era lineup reunited as Heaven & Hell, there was no further activity under the Black Sabbath name for six years. They reunited in 2011 and released their final studio album and nineteenth overall, 13 (2013), which features all of the original members except Ward. During their farewell tour, the band played their final concert in their home city of Birmingham on 4 February 2017.

Black Sabbath have sold over 70 million records worldwide as of 2013, making them one of the most commercially successful heavy metal bands. They were ranked by MTV as the "Greatest Metal Band" of all time, and placed second in VH1's "100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock" list. Rolling Stone magazine ranked them number 85 on their "100 Greatest Artists of All Time". Black Sabbath were inducted into the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2005 and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006. They have also won two Grammy Awards for Best Metal Performance, and in 2019 the band were presented a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.

They said it was The End in 2017 but it would appear that only death will be the true end for the Godfathers of heavy metal! Today, it’s been announced that Black Sabbath will reunite for one final tour in 2024. There’s no word on venues, cities or even countries but we’d imagine it will be less expansive than The End tour and will be taking place in arenas, if not stadiums. Could we even see them at the odd festival or two?

If you like what we do, consider joining us on Patreon for as little as £1 per month!

There’s also no confirmation on who will be sitting behind the drum kit, if Bill Ward will have a chance to say goodbye in the live arena like Ozzy Osbourne, Toni Iommi and Geezer Butler did during 2016 and 2017. Given Ozzy’s recent announcement of returning to performing live with LA’s Power Trip festival and him collaborating with Iommi on his most recent solo album, as well as no band truly retiring (see: Mötley Crüe), this news doesn’t come as too much of a surprise.

Check out o ur review of the “final” Birmingham show from 2017 and you’ll get an idea of how emotional it will be for everyone involved.

But don’t just take it from us, let’s hear it straight from the band themselves whilst we wait for more news to come.

Will Ozzy Osbourne Be Able to Perform at the 2024 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony?

The Black Sabbath rocker has largely retreated from live performances amid a series of spinal operations over the past few years

Will Ozzy Osbourne return to the stage to celebrate his Rock Hall induction?

The rock legend will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame later this year as a solo artist in its 2024 class, marking his second entry into the organization following Black Sabbath's induction in 2006.

After largely retreating from live performances due to undergoing a series of spinal operations related to structural damage sustained from a 2019 fall, Osbourne opened up to Billboard in a new interview about whether he'll be able to perform at the Rock Hall induction ceremony in October.

"You never know," the 75-year-old "Crazy Train" singer told the outlet, simply teasing that his outfit for the event "will most certainly be black."

Osbourne said he's "more than honored" to receive his second induction, which "feels big" and "different" from getting welcomed into the Rock Hall alongside his Black Sabbath bandmates, explaining, "because my solo career, it’s been a much larger part of my overall music career as a whole."

While the Prince of Darkness didn't confirm he'll perform at the show, he revealed he's feeling inspired to create music at the moment.

"I’m not putting a timetable on it," said the artist, who last released Patient Number 9 in 2022, "but I plan to start working on a new album sometime in the near future."

Osbourne last performed a brief set at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games in England. In an interview with Metal Hammer last year, the musician revealed he'd undergone his "final surgery" and expressed desire to make "one more album" and return to performing live.

"I’ve had all the surgery now, thank God," Osbourne told the outlet. "I’m feeling OK — it was just dragging on. I thought I’d be back on my feet months ago, I just couldn’t get used to this mode of living, constantly having something wrong. I can’t walk properly yet, but I’m not in any pain any more and  the surgery on my spine  went great."

Osbourne will be inducted into the Rock Hall's performer category alongside fellow musicians Mary J. Blige ,  Cher ,  Dave Matthews  Band, Foreigner,  Peter Frampton , Kool & the Gang and A Tribe Called Quest.

Additionally, the late Alexis Korner, John Mayall and the late Big Mama Thornton will receive the musical influence award, while  the late Jimmy Buffett , MC5, Dionne Warwick and the late Norman Whitfield will receive the musical excellence award. Suzanne de Passe will receive the Ahmet Ertegun award.

Last year, Ozzy's wife Sharon spoke about her husband's lack of solo induction during an interview on The Adam Carolla Show . "They know that Ozzy deserves to be there," she said at the time.

"They know he’s been a solo artist. You’ve gotta be doing it for 25 years. He’s been 43 years as a solo artist," continued Sharon, 71. "He sold nearly a hundred million albums as a solo artist. So where is he? Induct him."

After failing to even be nominated in previous years, Cher, Peter Frampton, Foreigner, Ozzy Osbourne and Kool & The Gang will all be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s class of 2024, alongside repeat nominees Mary J. Blige, Dave Matthews Band and hip-hop innovators A Tribe Called Quest.

In a novel move, Frampton encouraged concertgoers to vote for him during his April 14 show at The Shell in San Diego by having the QR code for the ballot projected onto the large video screen behind him on stage.

Five other artists who were also on the ballot for the first time this year did not earn enough votes to be inducted, specifically, Oasis, Lenny Kravitz, Sadé, Mariah Carey and Sinéad O’Connor, who died last July. Also failing to make the cut for induction were two repeat nominees — Jane’s Addiction and the hip-hop duo Erik B. & Rakim.

Sinead O'Connor has died at 56. She is shown at the 31st Annual Grammy Awards L.A. Feb. 22, 1989.

Appreciation: Sinead O’Connor, dead at 56, was a singular artist: ‘I would have liked to be a priest,’ she told us in 2013

‘I would like to be remembered,’ she told us, ‘as a loving mother and grandmother. I’d like to be the rocking-est granny! I’d like to go out like (pioneering blues and rock singer) Big Mama Thornton.’

This year’s inductees were announced during Sunday night’s telecast of “American Idol” by Lionel Richie, a 2022 hall inductee, and show host Ryan Seacrest. The list of 2024 honorees also includes six artists who will receive the hall’s Musical Excellence and Musical Influence awards, two categories that are chosen by the hall’s in-house committees.

The 2024 Musical Excellence Award honorees include Dionne Warwick, Norman Whitfield, Jimmy Buffett (who died last September from cancer) and the pioneering Detroit proto-punk-rock band MC5, whose leader, Wayne Kramer, died of cancer Feb. 2. The final iteration of the group, which included San Diego guitarist Stevie Salas playing alongside fellow guitarist Kramer, toured in 2022.

MC5 had been nominated for induction in six previous years but did not earn enough votes to gain induction. Buffett, whose final concert of his career with his Coral Reefer Band took place last May at San Diego’s Snapdragon Stadium, was never nominated.

This year’s Musical Influence Award honorees include England’s John Mayall and the late Alexis Korner, who in the 1960s jointly spearheaded the blues boom in the UK that fueled the launching of such bands as the Rolling Stones, Yardbirds, Fleetwood Mac and Cream. At 90, Mayall appears to be the oldest of this year’s hall honorees.

The third 2024 Musical Influence Award honoree is the late Big Mama Thornton, whose galvanizing recordings of the songs “Hound Dog” and “Ball and Chain” greatly influenced the subsequent versions of those songs by, respectively, Elvis Presley and Janis Joplin.

Artists become eligible for nomination 25 years after the release of their first recording and are honored for their “originality, impact and influence.” Ballots are cast by the hall’s more than 1,000 voting members, which include previous inductees and an array of music industry professionals, including this writer.

In 2013, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame introduced it “fan vote,” in which the top five nominees that fans vote online for are submitted as one official ballot that is counted with the rest of the Voting Committee’s. The quantitative impact of the fans’ choices is minimal — accounting for about 0.3 percent of the total — but creates a fair amount of buzz.

This year’s two top fan-vote earners are Dave Matthews Band (with 586,745 votes) and Frampton, with 529,077. This year’s online fan voting was supposed to continue until Friday, but instead concluded April 15.

The hall’s final 2024 honoree, powerhouse music, film and TV industry executive Suzanne de Passe, will receive the Ahmet Ertegun Award. It is named after the co-founder of Atlantic Records.

The announcement of this year’s inductees comes as several of them are battling serious medical conditions.

Frampton, 73, has an autoimmune disease called inclusion body myositis that affects his muscle control and sense of balance. He was diagnosed with the disease in 2019, after falling several times on stage. He now walks with a cane, performs while seated and has lost some control of his fingers.

Osbourne, 75, rose to fame as the lead singer in the heavy-metal band Black Sabbath before launching his solo career in 1980. He suffered a serious fall in 2019, has since undergone four spinal surgeries and was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2003.

Mick Jones, the 79-year-old founder of the band Foreigner, disclosed his own Parkinson’s diagnosis in February of this year. He cites his condition as the reason he no longer tours with his group. Foreigner’s farewell tour includes a June 28 show at the Honda Center in Anaheim.

Mick Jones is understandably proud that his band, Foreigner, sold more than 80 million albums worldwide between the release of its self-titled 1977 debut album and 1987’s “Inside Information.”

July 25, 2018

Fellow 2024 Rock Hall inductees Kool & The Gang will perform June 24 in San Diego at The Shell. Bassist and band founder Robert “Kool” Bell is the only surviving member still on tour with the group.

The 2024 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will take place Oct. 19 at the Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse in Cleveland and will stream live on Disney+ and be available on Hulu the following day. An edited airing of the ceremony will be broadcast on ABC at a later date.

Cher may command the spotlight at the induction ceremony — should she choose to attend.

In December — two months before the 2024 nominees were announced — the 77-year-old singer blasted the hall for never having made her a nominee despite her having been eligible to be on the ballot since 1990.

“You know what? I wouldn’t be in it (the hall) now if they gave me a million dollars,” Cher said during a telecast of “The Kelly Clarkson Show.”

“I’m not kidding you,” Cher continued. “I was about to say something else. … I was about to say I’m not sh-ting you. I’m never going to change my mind. They can just go you-know-what themselves.”

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Announces 2024 Inductees: Cher, Jimmy Buffett, Mary J. Blige, Dave Matthews, Peter Frampton, Foreigner and More

Cher, Jimmy Buffett, Mary J. Blige

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has revealed the names of 16 artists or other musical figures who will be inducted in 2024. It’s a diverse list that stretches from R&B/rock pioneer Big Mama Thornton to pop superstars Cher and Dionne Warwick, and from ’70s-rooted rockers like Peter Frampton, Foreigner and Ozzy Osbourne to ’90s icons the Dave Matthews Band , Mary J. Blige and A Tribe Called Quest.

Popular on Variety

For the first time, the inductees were announced as part of an “American Idol” broadcast, during a Sunday night episode themed around the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Following is the complete list of inductees for 2024:

Performer Category:

  • Mary J. Blige
  • Dave Matthews Band
  • Peter Frampton
  • Kool & The Gang
  • Ozzy Osbourne
  • A Tribe Called Quest

Musical Influence Award:

  • Alexis Korner
  • John Mayall
  • Big Mama Thornton

Musical Excellence Award:

  • Jimmy Buffett
  • Dionne Warwick
  • Norman Whitfield

Ahmet Ertegun Award :

  • Suzanne de Passe

The eight “performer” inductees are the ones selected by a ballot sent out to the Hall’s voters after the 15 nominees were announced on Feb. 10.

That leaves seven nominees from this year who will have to wait for another crack at getting in: Mariah Carey, Jane’s Addiction, Sade, Sinead O’Connor, Oasis, Lenny Kravitz and the duo Eric B. and Rakim.

One question mark now is how Cher will react to her induction. Just last December, in an appearance on “The Kelly Clarkson Show,” she said, “You know what, I wouldn’t be in it now if they gave me a million dollars … I’m never going to change my mind. They can just go you-know-what themselves.” At that point, though, she had never received so much as a nomination, so the odds favor her changing her tune on that vow, now that she got voted in her first time actually appearing on the ballot.

Five out of the eight voted in this year were first-time nominees: Osbourne, Cher, Frampton, Foreigner and Kool & the Gang.

A Tribe Called Quest got in on the hip-hop collective’s third time on the ballot (and their third year in a row being nominated). Blige and Matthews both got in on their second try (she was previously up for it in 2021; DMB had a prior nod in 2020).

Frampton, for his part, beyond the merits of having had one of the biggest albums of all time, may be a sentimental favorite this year, due to his being in the acknowledged twilight of his musical career. He has been out on a farewell tour off and on since 2019, following his diagnosis with the debilitating disease inclusion body myositis in 2015. The rocker just wrapped up the last round of dates he had scheduled, although he has not said there won’t be more.

Osbourne becomes a second-time inductee this year; his group Black Sabbath was voted in all the way back in 2006. Sometimes there is contention over whether singers who are already in the Hall of Fame, as group members, really need to be pushed to the front of the line as solo artists, too, ahead of other contenders. In any case, voters decided that Osbourne’s post-Sabbath career established him as one of rock’s major icons, even apart from his initial round of influence and success as a frontman.

De Passe is getting her flowers for a career that included a long stint as one of the major players at Motown, developing the Jackson 5 into superstars and signing the Commodores, among other triumphs, before becoming a film and TV executive. She was profiled by Variety about her long and wide-ranging career in 2022.

Motown is also being celebrated with the induction of Whitfield, a songwriter and producer whose astonishing catalog of hits in the ’60s and ’70s included “I Heard It Through the Grapevine,” “Just My Imagination,” “Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone,” “War,” “Ball of Confusion,” “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg,” “(I Know) I’m Losing You,” “I Wish It Would Rain,” “I Can’t Get Next to You” and “Car Wash.” He died in 2008.

Coming on under the “musical influences” umbrella, Alexis Korner may be the name among this year’s inductees that is least known to contemporary music fans. He was a major player in the British blues scene of the 1960s and became a popular broadcaster as well; he died in 1984 at age 55. With John Mayall also being selected by the committee for the same honor, it’s an unexpected banner year for British blues-rockers.
