Some Cambodians wryly observe that Cambodia has three seasons – hot, hotter and hottest – but in reality, there are distinct dry and wet seasons that define the harvest cycle and dramatically alter the character of the landscape in this fascinating Southeast Asian nation.

The dry season runs from November to May, and the "cool season" months of November to February are the most popular time to visit Cambodia due to milder temperatures. The countryside appears somewhat parched from February to May when daytime temperatures can soar above 40°C (104°F ).

The wet season usually runs from June to October, coinciding with the southwest monsoon, but it's not necessarily a bad time to travel to Cambodia. It usually only rains heavily once a day towards sunset, the countryside is a blaze of green, and many hotels and resorts offer substantial discounts.

Here's a guide to the best times to visit Cambodia.

The high season (November–March) is the best time for good weather and exploring temples

Temperatures in Cambodia are much more Mediterranean during the "winter" months in Southeast Asia. The mercury occasionally drops below 20°C (68°F), forcing Cambodians to scramble for their coats and woollies. This makes exploring the temples much more pleasant, but it's also the most crowded time at Angkor . Lots of accommodation is booked out in advance, particularly over the Christmas and New Year period and during Chinese New Year, which follows the lunar calendar, falling in January or February.

The shoulder season (July–August) is the best time for families

Although this is the middle of Cambodia's wet season, it doesn’t usually rain that much, though there's enough water to swell the Tonle Sap lake. It's an ideal time for families living in Europe and North America, thanks to the long school holidays and discounted prices at hotels and resorts.

There are also far fewer tourists exploring Angkor during the "green season" when the moats are full of water and many of the temples are coated in moss and lichen. The main drawback of shoulder season travel is that it can rain quite heavily on the coast, meaning Ko Rong and other idyllic islands near Sihanoukville can be quite wet and windy.

The low season (April–June & September–October) is the best time for discounts

When it comes to weather, these months are definitely not the best. Temperatures in April and May reach scorchio levels, and September and October are wet, wet, wet. However, this is the time when accommodation providers release their best special offers. You can save a huge amount of money if you plan on staying at five-star hotels and luxury resorts. September and October are the height of the rainy season, but this also brings emerald landscapes and epic cloud formations.

A month-by-month planner

Many of Cambodia's big festivals follow the lunar calendar and spill across more than one month on the Gregorian calendar. Here's a guide to what is happening throughout the year.

January–March is the busiest time of year

This is peak tourist season in Cambodia, and Phnom Penh, Siem Reap and the South Coast are usually heaving. The internationally recognized New Year celebrations are followed by Chinese and Vietnamese New Years' festivities, so be ready for some serious festive cheer.

Chaul Chnam Chen & Tet: The Chinese New Year – known locally as Chaul Chnam Chen – coincides with Tet, the Vietnamese New Year, falling in either January or February depending on the year. As many of Phnom Penh ’s businesses are run by Chinese-Khmers, commerce grinds to a halt around this time and there are dragon dances all over the capital.

April–June brings festivals and the start of the rains

This is the beginning of the low season for visitors, as the monsoon swoops in, bringing regular rain until October. Young rice is planted and the landscape begins to come to life once more in a blaze of green after the parched months of the dry season. April is the most important month in the calendar for Khmers, marking the Cambodian New Year. However, temperatures rocket and the mercury regularly hits 40°C (104°F).

Chaul Chnam Khmer: During the three-day celebration of Chaul Chnam Khmer (Khmer New Year) in mid-April, Cambodians make offerings at wats, clean out their homes and exchange gifts. It is a memorable time to visit the Kingdom as Khmers go wild with water in the countryside, and a good-natured water fight spills across the country (throwing talcum powder is also popular).

Chat Preah Nengkal (Royal Ploughing Ceremony): Presided over by the royal family, the Royal Ploughing Ceremony is an ancient agricultural festival held to mark the traditional beginning of the rice-growing season. The royal oxen predict whether or not it will be a good harvest by tucking into the sacred crop. The ritual takes place in early May and rotates around different provincial capitals.

Visakha Puja (Buddha Day): A celebration of Buddha’s birth, enlightenment and parinibbana (passing), Visakha Puja sees locals flock to wats (pagodas) to pay their respects. The festival falls on the eighth day of the fourth moon (in May or June) and sees processions of monks carrying candles through Angkor Wat at night.

July–September sees more celebrations and crowds of backpackers

Tourism numbers see a bounce in July and August thanks to the annual school holidays in Europe and the US. Backpackers also descend on Cambodia and the Mekong region to take advantage of university and college holidays. September is traditionally the wettest month in Cambodia, with sporadic flooding along the Mekong and around Battambang . The Khmer calendar’s second-most-important festival, P’chum Ben, falls in September or October.

P’chum Ben (Festival of the Dead): This festival resembles the Christian celebration of All Souls’ Day when respects are paid to the dead through offerings made at wats. P’chum Ben lasts for several days and devout Buddhists are expected to visit seven wats during the festival. Local temples are a blaze of color, ceremonies and chanting.

October-December sees rain give way to warm, dry winds

The rains extend deep into October and this has led to some serious flooding in recent years. However, the countryside is extraordinarily green, and it's a rewarding time for boat travel between Siem Reap and Battambang. November sees the start of the dry, windy season, the best time to be in the country. The peak tourist season starts and continues through until February.

Bon Om Tuk, the much-celebrated Water Festival, takes place in October or November. Christmas and New Year are peak times for visitors at Angkor and leading beach resorts, so book a long way ahead. The international New Year on 31 December is widely (and wildly) celebrated in key cities such as Phnom Penh and Siem Reap.

Bon Om Tuk (Water Festival): Celebrating the victory of King Jayavarman VII over the Chams, this important festival in October or November also marks the extraordinary natural phenomenon of the reversal of the flow of the Tonlé Sap River. It’s a wonderful, chaotic time to be in Cambodia, with boat races at Sisowath Quay in Phnom Penh, and riverside parties in Siem Reap.

Angkor Photo Festival: In Siem Reap, resident and regional photographers descend on the temples and team up with local youths to teach them the tricks of the trade at this civic-minded festival in November or December. Photography exhibitions are staged all over town and some famous Vietnam War-era photographers are sometimes in attendance.

Angkor Wat International Half Marathon: This half marathon in December has been a fixture on the sporting calendar for two decades. Choose from a 21km (13-mile) half marathon, a 10km (6.2-mile) fun run or various bicycle races. It’s hard to imagine a better backdrop for a run than the incredible temples of Angkor.

3. June to August (Wet Season – Monsoon):

  • Summer Weather:  These months bring heavy rainfall and high humidity to Cambodia. Expect daily afternoon downpours, especially in July and August.
  • Summer Highlights:  While it’s the rainy season, you’ll find lower prices at hotels. The landscape is lush and green, and the temples are far less crowded.

4. September to October (Transition Period):

Negotiate your price ahead of time. A typical ride from the airport to the palace area hotels will be $10 USD.

How many days do you need in Phnom Penh?

You can see most of the main sites in Phnom Penh in a single day. From the Royal Palace to the Central Market to the Wat Phnom Temple, you can pack a lot into 24 hours in the city before moving on.

How many days do you need at Siem Reap?

I’d say you need a few days in Siem Reap to truly see all of the temples and other sites around the city.

Is a Mekong River cruise from Cambodia worth it?

A Mekong River cruise is an unforgettable trip through Cambodia and Vietnam. While Siem Reap isn’t on the Mekong, Heritage Line and other companies allow their guests to fly there, spend a few days, and then join the riverboat a few hours away. Other stops include Phnom Penh and a variety of local villages on the Mekong as you make your way down to Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

Wrap: The Best Time to Visit Cambodia

In summary, the best time to visit Cambodia for most travelers is during the dry season, from November to February, when the weather is pleasant and ideal for exploring temples and outdoor activities. However, if you prefer fewer crowds and don’t mind occasional rain, the transition period (September to October) can also be a good choice. Be prepared for the heat if you visit during the hot season (March to May), and consider the wet season (June to August) if you want to experience Cambodia in a different light with lush landscapes and lower prices.

Rainy Season In Cambodia: Is It Worth Going? (2024)

Are you wondering how bad is the rainy season in Cambodia?

There is so much excessive negativity about the rainy season in Southeast Asia that you’re probably confused is it worth visiting Cambodia during the wet season at all.

I traveled around Cambodia during the rainy season for several weeks and had a fantastic time despite occasional showers.

Cambodia’s rainy season can be a fantastic time to visit Cambodia, with fewer crowds and lower prices.

However, monsoons can be unpredictable, and it might not be the best time to come if you’re short on time or planning sunny beach days.

Let’s find out if it’s a good time to travel for you!

When Is The Rainy Season In Cambodia?

The rainy season in Cambodia usually starts in mid-May and lasts until mid-October .

September is the month with the most rainfall, but recently, October has had a lot of rain too.

Of course, there are no exact dates, and you can experience rainy days outside this period.

When I was backpacking in Thailand, I was stuck in my hostel for several days because of the most powerful showers I’ve ever seen. And that was in February, which is the dry season!

What Is Cambodia Rainy Season Like?

The first thing you should know about the rainy season is that it is not THAT bad .

Before coming to Cambodia, I thought it would rain for days on end, something like European autumn.

However, tropical rain is not the same as the persistent, day-long rain we have in Europe.

As I was backpacking Cambodia during the rainy season, I found it quite interesting how punctual the rain was. It would rain most days at the same time!

I spent 3 days in Phnom Penh, and it rained every night at exactly 11 PM! The rest of the day was perfect – dry and sunny.

While I was backpacking in Siem Reap, it rained around 4 PM for half an hour to 45 minutes, the same as in Kampot!

You’ll quickly notice the rain in Cambodia comes in powerful but brief showers.

Umbrella won’t be much use here, so you don’t need to bother bringing it when packing for Cambodia .

When it rains, the best thing to do is to simply go inside until it stops. If you need to be outside, those massive plastic ponchos you can get for 1 dollar or riels will be your best bet.

Another thing to know is that even if it only rains for 45 minutes, it is quite common for streets to flood.

I had to walk to take a bus in Kampot after a strong shower, and all the streets were flooded up to my ankles!

I changed into my flip-flops and hoped I wouldn’t get a foot infection because any other footwear was useless.

Pros And Cons Of Visiting Cambodia During Rainy Season

Traveling to any Southeast Asian country during the monsoon season has pros and cons you should consider before booking your ticket.

a mud road in cambodia during rainy season with ddark clouds in the background coming for another strong shower

Cons Of Visiting Cambodia In Rainy Season

The obvious con of visiting Cambodia in the rainy season is the weather .

If you’re hoping for a tropical vacation, you’re probably thinking of soaking in the sun on a tropical beach, not fighting a tropical monsoon.

For those hoping for beach days, the rainy season is likely the worst time to visit Cambodia .

If you’re visiting Cambodia for 2 weeks during your annual PTO, you don’t want to lose days waiting for the rain to stop or be cold on the beach because it is too cloudy for the sun to shine through.

It’s not just the beaches that can be enjoyable. Another serious con is flooding .

Most tourist areas don’t experience flooding in Cambodia , but if you’re planning to get off the beaten track, you might face problems with the rain affecting underdeveloped Cambodia’s infrastructure.

Finally, the wet season is the low season. That means that some places might be closed, and some tours might not be running.

The low season is the most noticeable on the islands, and for solo female travelers in Cambodia , it might be lonely.

Pros Of Traveling To Cambodia In Rainy Season

First, the weather is not bad all the time !

Sure, it will rain for at least half an hour every day. But you’ll still get plenty of sunshine and dry days. If you’re lucky, you might not see any rain for a few days!

Low season also means fewer crowds .

If you don’t want to fight a hoard of group tours trying to see the same stone in a temple, this is the time to go!

For everybody traveling to Cambodia on a budget , prices are lower in the rainy season!

You’ll notice many Cambodia hostels and hotels offering promo prices, up to 50% lower than usual.

Also, tour companies will offer discounts to attract tourists, as there are fewer tourists than during winter in Cambodia.

There are many Angkor Wat tours, so everyone is trying to offer the most competitive price. You can expect the same with trekking and other tours.

Finally, the nature is absolutely beautiful ! Everything is lush and green, the rice fields are mesmerizing, and the waterfalls are stunning.

It is not for nothing that they say that rain brings life!

Cambodia Weather In Rainy Season

Southwest monsoon comes to Cambodia in late May, bringing humidity and rainy days.

The humidity might be even more frustrating than the rain. It is constantly humid, while it only rains for a couple of hours a day.

Temperatures are still quite high, and it gradually gets cooler as it heads towards October.

However, don’t expect snow in Cambodia . It is still a tropical country where cool means 25℃.

Temperatures throughout the country are relatively similar.

May and June are the hottest months, but the average temperatures are 26-33℃ during the season.

Things To Do During Rainy Season In Cambodia

1. admire angkor temples without crowds.

Seeing Angkor temples is probably the number 1 item on everybody’s bucket list for Cambodia .

Visiting in the low season ensures you get to admire the temples with fewer crowds.

Sure, watching the sunset in front of Angkor Wat is always going to be more or less crowded.

However, the Angkor UNESCO site stretches over 400 km2, so you might be completely alone exploring other temples!

I joined the Angkor Wat tour where we visited some of the most popular temples, and we were the only group there at the time.

If you hire a tuk-tuk driver or get a private Angkor Wat tour, you can easily find many temples where you’ll be the only visitor!

2. See The Floating Villages

Floating villages are one of the unique settlement types in rural Cambodia.

These wooden houses perched on the stills are a sight to admire during the rainy season. As the water fills Tonlé Sap Lake, the houses appear to float on the water.

3. Take A Boat From Siem Reap To Phnom Penh

Another activity on Tonlé Sap Lake is taking a slow boat from Siem Reap to Phnom Penh .

This boat trip is only possible during the rainy season because there’s not enough water in the lake otherwise.

A friend of mine took the boat and said it was an incredible experience observing the communities that live in houses along the lake.

4. Kayak In Kampot

Kayaking in the mangroves is one of the best activities to add to your Kampot itinerary.

The Green Cathedral, or the Green Loop, is the best part of the river for kayaking. It is easy to access, and as it is a loop route, you get back to where you started!

5. See The Waterfalls

Cambodia is home to several impressive waterfalls, which are most powerful and beautiful to see during the rainy season.

The most popular waterfall in Cambodia is the Kulen waterfall, and you can visit it on a trekking day trip from Siem Reap.

However, there are waterfalls throughout the country, including Koh Rong islands.

6. Admire The Rice Paddies

Another typical Southeast Asian landscape is the lush green rice paddies.

Rice farming is one of the main agricultural activities in Cambodia.

Plan your trip towards the end of the rainy season in September and October to see the rice fields in the best condition.

7. Try A Cooking Class

A fun activity to add to your itinerary on a rainy day in Cambodia is a Khmer cooking class!

Cooking classes are always held inside, so the weather doesn’t affect the activity.

I joined a cooking class in Siem Reap, and it was a great way to spend an afternoon and learn a new skill.

The best thing about cooking classes is that you can adapt the recipes to every diet.

If you want to try vegan Cambodian food, you simply pick vegan options on the cooking menu.

8. Join A Yoga Retreat

Joining a yoga retreat in Cambodia is a fantastic idea year-round.

However, it is even better if you’re visiting during the wet season and want to enjoy activities that are not dependent on the weather.

I spent 3 days on a yoga retreat in Kampot in late October. It was supposed to be the end of the monsoon season, but it still rained every day.

It was so relaxing to do yoga while listening to the rain outside.

9. Explore The Country Side

Finally, if you want to enjoy the lush green nature of Cambodia, head to the countryside. That won’t be that hard, as most of Cambodia is still rural.

If you’re not afraid of the rain and mud, a fun way to explore the Cambodian countryside is on a bike tour!

My friend went on a 5-day bike tour around Siem Reap and said it was an incredible experience despite the rain. I prefer to stay dry when cycling, so I’d pick a sunny day for this activity.

Summary: Rainy Season Cambodia

Most people will say monsoon season is the worst time to visit Cambodia. However, it is not as bad as it sounds!

Cambodia is a tropical country and a year-round tourist destination. There are things to do in Cambodia at any time of the year.

Sure, the rainy season might not be the best time to enjoy the beaches, but it is the best time to enjoy the lush greenery, waterfalls, and tourist attractions with fewer crowds.

You’ll love the rainy season In Cambodia if you’re backpacking SE Asia for several months and can afford several slow travel days.

However, if you only have a short time to explore the country and want guaranteed sunny days, it is not the safest option.

When to go to Cambodia

When is the best time to visit Cambodia?

The best time to visit Cambodia is during dry season, which runs from October to April. The wet season runs from May until September, with the heaviest rainfall generally in August & September. Average temperatures range from 24°C in the cooler months of October, November & December to 35°C at the hottest time of the year from March until June.

Cambodia weather & when to go

Pick a month below.

Weather seasons are becoming less predictable but peak visitor months remain more certain.

Unfollow the herd - avoid the peak months to enjoy fewer crowds, better availability, often lusher countryside and help to spread the economic benefits of tourism.

Weather overview

Cambodia is blessed with one of Asia's simpler weather systems. The country has two distinct weather seasons, but you can travel in Cambodia all year round.

In general, the entire country is subject to the same weather patterns, mainly due to the relatively uniform altitude and latitude throughout Cambodia.

Cambodia weather and seasons

There are two distinct seasons – dry (October to late April) and wet (May to late September). Within each season there are variations in temperature, with the final few dry months leading up to the wet season (March and April) and the early months of the wet season (May and June) usually being the hottest of the year with temperatures in excess of 35°C at times.

Humidity is at its highest during March and April whilst the coolest months of the year tend to be between October and December, however this is cool for Cambodia but far from chilly with average temperatures hovering around 24°C-26°C.

The Dry Season in Cambodia

October - april/early may.

Cambodia's dry season lasts from October to April, when the dry north-east monsoon arrives, characterised by hot wind blowing across the entire country. Whilst November to January are quite cool (high 20°C's), by April the weather is scorching making early morning and late afternoon Angkor Temple tours, with a few hours by the hotel pool at lunchtime, the preference for many.

Thanks to the hot weather this is unsurprisingly the season when Cambodia's tourist numbers peak.

In more remote parts, such as the north east regions of Mondulkiri & Ratanakiri , the roads are at their best and journey times are shorter because of this. Kep and Sihanoukville on the south coast are popular during this season as they bask in the brilliant sunshine and sea conditions are very favourable.

The Wet Season in Cambodia

Early/mid may - october.

Cambodia's wet season comes courtesy of the southwest monsoon and lasts from May to October, bringing with it almost 75% of Cambodia's annual rainfall. Across Cambodia, throughout much of the rainy season, daytime temperatures average between 25°C and 27°C. The early months of the wet season (May – July) remain very hot with infrequent rainfall usually in the form of short downpours. In the latter months (late July – September) the rain tends to becomes more constant and is heavy at times, especially in coastal and rural regions.

Travel in the more remote corners of the country, such as Mondulkiri & Ratanakiri, is almost impossible due to the state of the roads and journeys into the north east are inadvisable during the peak wet season because of this. There is also very limited access to Bamboo Island (near Kep) due to high seas.

Why travel to Cambodia during green season?

On the upside, travelling in monsoonal Cambodia does have its advantages. The dust is gone and the lush greenery of the countryside returns. Angkor Wat in particular is stunning in the wet season, with moats brimming with water and a severe drop in visitor numbers. High rainfall make it the perfect time of year to visit the flooded forests and floating villages of Tonle Sap Lake by boat, as it swells to more than 5 times its size during wet season.

Cambodia's wet season comes courtesy of the southwest monsoon, which blows from May to October, bringing with it some three-quarters of Cambodia's annual rainfall. Not surprisingly, wet season is characterised by rain, and during the peak of wet season from July to September it can rain every day. Rainy days however tend to have a few hours of heavy rain rather than being all-day downpours, though the latter do sometimes occur -- you will get wet travelling in a Cambodian wet season.

Aside from getting drenched, the main disadvantage of travelling in wet season in Cambodia relates to flooding and degraded road conditions. The bulk of roads in Cambodia are dirt and in wet season they turn to heavily rutted and pot-holed mud pits. Travelling in rural areas, particularly the north and northeast of the country, can be slowed considerably. You will still be able to go just about anywhere, it will just take longer.

A secondary problem are bridges being out, but this is becoming less of an issue as the quality of bridgework is improving. Cambodia's arterial routes -- namely Phnom Penh to Siem Reap, Phnom Penh to Battambang and Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville -- are all-weather, sealed affairs and far less of a problem than the unsealed roads.

On the upside, monsoonal Cambodia can be a beautiful country to travel in . The dust is all gone -- turned to mud unfortunately -- and the lush greenery of the country returns. Angkor Wat in particular can be stunning in wet season -- the birdlife is far more obvious and the ruins have a special appearance and feel. Observing Angkor Wat with a lightning storm as a backdrop is an electrifying experience (couldn't resist!). Far fewer travellers are in-country, too, so if you prefer to dodge the crowds, the monsoon can be a good time to visit.

Regionally, the Cardamom mountains get the heaviest rain in the country, while the entire coastline gets rough seas and a lot of rain .

Cambodia's dry season runs from October to April, when the dusty northeast monsoon arrives. Blowing like a hair-dryer set to high, the northeast monsoon dries out the country fast. While November and January are quite cool (high C20s) by April, the weather is scorching and oh-so-dry it will take your breath away. Characterised by heat and dust, this season coincides with Cambodia's peak tourist season -- travellers arrive in their droves between November and January to take advantage of the lack of rain and relative cool. By March, travelling can be uncomfortable and hot, while April can be excruciating.

As the country dries out, badly rutted roads get graded and trip times improve dramatically, though they get incredibly dusty. Cambodia's beach strips at Kep, Sihanoukville and Ko Kong bask in brilliant sunshine with clear calm waters -- if you're a beach bum, dry season is the season for you.

Dry season runs from November to April on the back of the northeast monsoon. The months of November to January are cooler, while February to April are hot and dusty. November is the coolest month, April the hottest.

Wet season runs from May to October courtesy of the southwest monsoon. Wet season brings some three-quarters of Cambodia's annual rainfall. July to September are the wettest months.

Cambodia’s Wet Season: June, July, August

The months of June, July, and August mark the start of the wet season in Cambodia. If you are planning a trip to Cambodia in these months then pack an umbrella! It does not rain too much from June to August, however, it rains enough that the entire countryside is transformed into a lush green paradise .

As opposed to most other tropical nations, the initial start of the rains in Cambodia is very mellow. During June, July and August, there will be stretches of days when it does not rain at all. And when it rains, it usually only lasts for an hour or so in the afternoon.

What to pack?

Even though it is the early wet season, Cambodia is still a tropical country and it can get hot when it doesn’t rain for a few days. You should pack everything you would pack for summer including; a hat, sunscreen, light summer wear, and sunglasses. To these items, simply add a light rain jacket, some waterproof pouches for your phone and other electronic devices and footwear appropriate for the wet season in Cambodia.

Places to Visit in the wet season

As mentioned before, one of the striking features of the country during the wet season is a decrease in the number of tourists. This makes Siem Reap and the Angkor Temples much less crowded, making this a very good time to explore both the city and the temples.

During the wet season, hotel rates in Cambodia are at their lowest. If you are a budget traveler, this could be the ideal season for you to explore Cambodia. Additionally, you even get guides at lower rates than any other time of the year.

You should definitely check out the floating villages of Tonle Sap as only during and after the wet season will the water level be high enough to make the houses “float”. Wait till August to visit these stilt houses.

You can still indulge in diving off the Koh Rong islands even though its wet season. However, it would be best to stay inland and explore Cambodia at a time when it is at it’s prettiest. Strong currents and tropical storms make it a risky prospect to travel the seas.

Festivals during the wet season in cambodia

International children’s day – 1 st june .

Cambodia has the youngest demographic in all of South East Asia. Approximately 66% of the population is below the age of 30. As there are a lot of children, International Children’s Day is marked as a public holiday and the people celebrate it as such.

Queen Norodom Monineath Sihanouk’s Birthday – 18 th June

Cambodians celebrate this day in honour of the birthday of King Norodom Sihamoni’s mother. There are celebrations around the royal palace in Phnom Penh.

There aren’t many other festivals in the country during these months as the start of the rainy season in Cambodia marks the start of agricultural activities. Most people are busy tending to the fields and thus there is very little to celebrate. I f you are having second thoughts about visiting Cambodia during June, July and August due to the threat of rain ruining your trip, then you are clearly overestimating the rainfall during these months. The rainy season is at its peak in Cambodia during September and October . But the start of the rainy season from June to August is a very enjoyable time to visit Cambodia. The lush green of Cambodia’s tropical forests, a welcome drop in temperature, the cloud cover providing you with a few hours of relief from the harsh sun; travellers often misunderstand the initial months of the rainy season in Cambodia.

Travelling with Children,  Cambodia is a great destination!

royal palace Phnom Penh

If anything, there are a lot of advantages to visiting Cambodia during the wet season. Most people flat-out refuse to visit during these months. Thus, you will find that a lot of the touristy places are emptier. The Angkor temples which are usually full of tourists are now much less crowded. So anyone with an aversion to large crowds has no better time to visit the country. If you want to find out more about Cambodia, then you can check out the rest of our blogs . Cambodia has the simpler weather system in Southeast Asia with two distinct seasons: dry and wet season.

Cambodia Climate

Located in the tropical zone in Southeast Asia, Cambodia’s climate is governed by the annual monsoon cycle with two major seasons: dry and wet seasons. The cyclic air pressure changes over central Asia is the driven factor of monsoon cycle. During the summer months (from June to October), the pressure drops and moist air from the ocean is drawn landward, which brings the southwest monsoon rains to Cambodia and almost Southeast Asia. Heavy rains and high humidity caused by strong prevailing winds are the main characteristics of this wet season.

Wet season in Cambodia is characterized by heavy rains and high humidity.

Wet season in Cambodia is characterized by heavy rains and high humidity.

From the early November, the southwest monsoon withdraws in the north Cambodia and disappears in center-south between the middle and late November. From this moment until May, Cambodia experiences a rainless dry season because the air pressure over central Asia rises and brings cool dry air back across this region. In dry season, northeast monsoon with lighter and drier winds bring variable cloudiness, infrequent precipitation and lower humidity.

Generally, the whole Cambodia experiences the same weather patterns because the altitude and latitude throughout the country are relative uniform. No matter dry or wet seasons, temperatures are high throughout the year. Temperatures are in excess of 35°C, or even 40°C at times in March and April – the hottest months of the year, as well as the early months of the wet season. November, December and January are the coolest months of the year in Cambodia. However, these cool time in Cambodia is still far from chilly with average temperatures hovering around 24°C-26°C.

Cambodia's south coast is popular to visit during dry season with brilliant sunshine.

Cambodia’s south coast is popular to visit during dry season with brilliant sunshine.

The annual rainfall varies considerably throughout the country. For example, in a typical year, the central lowland region receives about 1,300 to 1,800 mm (51 to 70 inches) of rainfall. Whereas, the precipitation exceeds 2,000 mm (80 inches) in the southwest region, towards the coast of the Gulf of Thailand. Highlands and mountainous areas, like Cardamom Mountains, receive up to 5,000 mm (197 inches) of rain per year, and even experience some afternoon showers before the monsoon season (from February to April).

Typhoons can occur in Cambodia but they are quite rare. They are weakened when hitting Cambodia because they pass to Vietnam and release their energy over the coasts of Vietnam. These typhoons can bring heavy rains, which can cause flooding in Cambodia in between late July and September.

November to February is ideal time to explore Angkor Temples.

November to February is considered as the cool and dry season in Cambodia. The average temperature in daytime is around 20°C and sometimes dropping below 20 at night time. In early November, the occasional short showers in the early morning are expected but rainfall significantly decreases as the month progresses then completely stops by mid-November. December and January are characterized by sunny weather, low humidity and relatively cool temperatures (avg temp: 26 °C) across the country. The weather in February is still pleasant, but temperatures tend to rise by the end of the month.

Tourists beat the heat of summer at the waterfalls in Cambodia.

Cambodia heats up steadily from March to May with average temperatures of 35°C. Throughout these months, the chances of rain are almost non-existent. Therefore, water levels in rivers and lakes are very low, which makes river cruising much more difficult and waste more travel time. April is the hottest month of the year in Cambodia. Its mid-day temperatures can hover in the mid to upper 40°C, especially in inland areas like Siem Reap. Very hot, dry weather is the norm across the entire country.

The terrain dusty with little vegetation due to lack of rains for several months. During this time of year, it is less windy, the sun can be quite intense and the air becomes hazier with the rising humidity. Latter part of May can welcome short lived rainfall from the odd tropical storm.

By August rainfall is almost at its peak, but comes in short and intense forms, rather than all-day downpours.

By August rainfall is almost at its peak, but comes in short and intense forms, rather than all-day downpours.

Hot season continues from June to August but monsoon rains can be expected throughout the country. During these months, temperatures are still high (avg temp: 28°C) and humidity can reach 70% but the appearance of short showers helps to eliminate the humidity and make the days a little more comfortable. Good news is that the monsoon rains are fairly predictable. These rains often occur in the afternoon or at night, and last no more than a couple of hours so sightseeing activities can easily be plan around.

However, there is difference about pattern of monsoon rains in Cambodia’s south coast beaches, where experience the heaviest downpours. As the season progresses, the rains are more frequent and may last for several days by August.

Siem-Reap-Angkor-Wat

Tourists enjoy strolling around Angkor Temples in cool and dry season.

Late August and September are the peak period of rainfalls. Even occurring in short and intense forms, these rain showers bring cooler air than previous months. In September, the average temperature is a comfortable 26-27°C and slowly drop through the following months. Thanks to short and heavy downpours, the countryside is more lush and green, and water levels on the Tonle Sap Lake drastically increase, making the lake swollen to more than 5 times its size at this time of year.

On the other hand, the heavy rains in September make travelling to rural north-east regions, such as Ratanakiri and Mondulkiri, rather difficult because remote tracks can become unpassable. In October, the frequency of rainfall drops off considerably, and completely stops by the end of this month. The country is nearly back to its best time of the year with plenty of color in the countryside.

The best and ideal time to visit Cambodia goes from November to February , when Cambodia weather is at its coolest, driest and sunniest period. Consequently, that is also when Cambodia’s tourist numbers peak and travelling cost tends to increase. If traveling during these months, tourists are highly recommended to reserve travel services as early as possible to avoid fully booked situations.

During November – April, Cambodia experiences comfortable conditions with brilliant sunshine and extremely low chance of raining. Beach and island lovers surely have difficulty in finding the beach destinations because the south coast offers many pristine white sand coastlines and islands, such as Sihanouk Ville – Koh Rong – Koh Rong Samloem .

In north east regions of Cambodia, journey time to Mondulkiri and Ratanakiri is shorter thanks to good road conditions in dry season. Sunny daytimes and cooler temperatures make adventure activities like trekking into jungles or interact with wildlife in these places are much more pleasant.

Enjoy breakfast at Nature Lodge in Mondulkiri.

Coming to hot and dry season from March to May (average temperatures of 35°C), tourists are recommended to take early morning or late afternoon tours rather than all day visits to Angkor Temples . And short break at the hotel’s swimming pool or at air-condition restaurants or tourist venues at midday are also good recommendations. On the other hand, the summer heat somehow helps to lower the crowd numbers at the main temples in specific time of the day.

Many travelers try to avoid visiting Cambodia and other Southeast Asian countries in monsoon season because they are afraid that rains will spoilt their holidays. Actually, wet season is not as bad as the label implies because it depends on what you want to do in these countries. And sometimes, tourist numbers may be taken into consideration rather than the weather factor.

Visitors can still come to Cambodia during monsoon season when the dust is gone and the countryside returns to its lush greenery thanks to downpours. The iconic tourism site – Angkor Temples , gets a severe decrease in visitor numbers. In some extends, these spectacular temples are more stunning in wet season with fully watered moats surrounding, which provides perfect chances to snap shots of temple reflections in the water. Rainy season is also the perfect time of the year to visit floating villages in Tonle Sap Lake by boat.

In hot and dry season, tourists are recommended to take short break at the hotel’s swimming pool at midday.

In hot and dry season, tourists are recommended to take short break at the hotel’s swimming pool at midday to avoid summer heat.

During wet season, the lake swells to six or seven times its normal size of approximately 2,600 square kilometres. Practically speaking, rain doesn’t last all of the time or even every day during the rainy season. It comes in short form in the afternoon or night time and lasts a couple of hours, making it easy to plan around in most cases. At the beginning and by the end of the season the rains occur with far less frequency.

On the downside, heavy rainfalls make travelling to north east regions ( Kratie , Mondulkiri , Ratanakiri ) and southern coastal destinations ( Sihanouk Ville , Kampot , Kep ) fairly difficult. “Off the beaten path” travel should be avoided, particularly in August. Remote tracks can become unpassable due to flooding of road system there. For those who are planning some relaxing days on the beach should forget Cambodia’s south coast during these months.

To sum up, each weather type in Cambodia has its own strength and advantages which can probably surprise you when exploring the whole country. You can make up your mind on travelling time, depending on what type of weather you love, what you want to do, and how much (or how little) you’re into crowds. Guide talking talking whilst standing in a rice fire near Siem Reap, Cambodia

Cambodia's temperatures stay pretty constant all year round with a distinct wet and dry season. The north generally experiences slightly colder winters (dry seasons) than the south. The most popular season to travel, by far, is the dry season, as showers usually only occur in the late afternoon and for a matter of minutes before passing over.

In the wet season, however, rainfall can be constant and heavy, with August and September bringing most of the monsoon rains to the whole country. That shouldn't put you off, though – the Angkor temples and terraced rice fields arguably look the best after a shower and without the smoky haze of the dry season. Plus, it's generally much quieter in the wet season.

Siem Reap features a tropical wet-to-dry climate. It doesn't really drop much below 30°C on any given day, but rainfall fluctuates dramatically between the wet season (May–October) and the dry season.

Late November through February is usually an ideal time to visit Siem Reap – warm but pleasant days, cooler nights and not too much rainfall.

Temperatures start to sneak up around February and short but sharp rain showers in the early evenings begin to become more frequent.

Surprise, surprise – weather on the coastline is not much different to the tropical wet and dry season pattern in other regions in Cambodia.

Expect temperatures to be slightly cooler at night, with sea breezes taking the edge off. Rainfall and humidity, on average, are a little higher than in the interior of the country, with humidity rising to around 90% during the wet season.

Kampot's wettest period is from May to October, and the highest average rainfall is in August, with around 410 mm falling in a month.

Just like Siem Reap, Cambodia's capital is classified as having a tropical wet and dry climate.

Temperatures don't vary greatly, but the city is subject to tropical monsoons in the wet season. The heaviest rainfall happens over September and October, and the driest month is February.

Air temperature remains relatively constant throughout the year, with the highest average humidity in the wetter months.

Battambang, in the northwest reaches of Cambodia, follows the trend of the major cities of Phnom Penh and Siem Reap: hot and wet in the monsoon season and slightly cooler and drier between December and February.

The city sits on the river Sangker, which feeds into the Tonle Sap and Mekong rivers, and flooding can occur when these waterways swell during the wet season.

Most of the rain falls in September – on average around 260 mm over the month.

Cambodia Weather – Climate and Seasons in Cambodia

Cambodia has two weather seasons: dry and wet. The dry season is from November to April, while the wet season is from May to October. The country has hot weather all year round, with the highest temperatures in March and May reaching around 32°C and above. In December and January, the weather is drier and slightly cooler, with temperatures ranging from about 25°C to 30°C.

Phnom Penh Weather:

Siem Reap Weather:

Sihanoukville Weather:

Battambang Weather:

Kampot/Kep Weather:

Ratanakiri Weather:

  • Dry Season : The temperature varies from cool in November, around 25°C, to very hot in March and April, reaching 30°C or higher.
  • Dry Season : The region usually gets less rain and is known for the dry north-east monsoon, which brings hot winds across the country.
  • Wet Season : Brings about 75% of the rainfall in the country each year. This occurs during the southwest monsoon season from May to October, which brings humidity, strong winds, and occasional heavy rain.
  • The rainy season, also called the “ Green Season ” makes the countryside lush and green. It’s a great time to visit the flooded forests and floating villages of Tonle Sap Lake.
  • The best time for tourism in Cambodia is during the cooler part of the dry season, which is from November to February. During this time, the temperatures are comfortable for exploring temples and sunbathing by the coast.

Best Time to Visit Cambodia Based on Weather Conditions

  • November : Cooler temperatures of around 25°C are perfect for exploring monuments, markets, and temples without dealing with large crowds.
  • December and January : Dry and slightly cooler weather is ideal for visiting southern islands and exploring because it is not as humid.
  • March and April : Hot and humid, with temperatures reaching 30°C or more, making it suitable for lazy beach days and water activities.
  • Advantages : Scenery is beautiful, the countryside is vibrant and full of greenery, and there are fewer people at popular places like Angkor Wat, the Royal Palace in Phnom Penh, and other provinces in Cambodia.
  • Considerations : Heavier rain and possible road closures because of flooding, but also the chance of getting good deals on places to stay and better lighting for taking photos.

General Information about the Weather in Cambodia and the Best Time to Visit

In summary, the best time to visit Cambodia depends on what you prefer. If you like nice weather and want to avoid rain, then the dry season is the best time for you. However, if you enjoy beautiful views, fewer people, and the possibility of saving money, then the wet season might be more attractive. Ultimately, the decision is up to you and what you value the most.

Costa Rica in May: Guide to Weather, Where to Go, What to Do

C osta Rica in May is the start of the rainy season throughout most of the country. It is a great time to visit, but there are a few things you should know as you plan your trip.

Thomas and I created this post to detail the pros and cons of May in Costa Rica. We have lived in Costa Rica since 2016, so we are somewhat experts on the weather you can expect each month of the year. We also included tips on what to pack, the best areas to visit, and the pros and cons of this time of year.

So, let’s get to all the tips to make sure you have an amazing experience while visiting Costa Rica during the month of May.

Costa Rica in May at a Glance

  • This is a transition month between the end of dry season and the start of rainy season. Weather will be hot and sunny with occasional afternoon rain showers on the Pacific Coast.
  • Typically tourism starts to go down a bit at this time of year. That means prices also get a bit lower.
  • Focus on sun-blocking clothing, high SPF sunscreen, bug spray, rain protection, and lots of water for hydration. This time of year is humid!

Should You Travel to Costa Rica in May?

We say definitely! It’s actually one of the best months of the year to visit Costa Rica (in our opinion).

Pros of Visiting Costa Rica in May

  • The weather should be good. We go into the weather details further in this post, but in general, you can expect perfectly sunny days, afternoon rain storms, and warm evenings.
  • Everything will be open at this time. Sometimes later in the year tour companies and hotels close because there are just not enough tourists for there to be a reason to stay open.
  • Everything starts turning green again after the dry season, and it is so beautiful!
  • There are still a lot of tourists, but it is not as busy as peak high season ( January – April).
  • You can expect what is referred to as “mid-season prices”. That means rates aren’t as high as in peak season, but not as low as later in the year when the chance of rain is higher.
  • Hotels, activities etc, aren’t as full.
  • Wildlife can be more active because the temperatures cool down a bit. It’s a great time to visit national parks !

Cons of Visiting Costa Rica in May

  • This is the beginning of the green season and you may have to contend with afternoon rain.
  • Rates go down a bit, but not as much as later in the year
  • The mosquitoes tend to be worse in the rainy season versus dry season

Costa Rica Weather in May

May is the start of the rainy season in many parts of Costa Rica, which means you can expect some wet weather during your visit.

The weather can vary significantly depending on where you are in the country.

The sun rises daily around 5:15 am and sets around 5:50 pm.

One thing to keep in mind is that the weather forecast online is never correct during the rainy season. They typically predict rain showers all day long. This is luckily all lies.

Pacific Coast

On the Pacific Coast, we suggest getting up as early as possible. Usually, you won’t really be able to sleep in anyway because the however monkeys and other loud wildlife will make sure you are up early.

In our opinion, the early morning hours are the very best time of the day. It’s beautiful!

You can expect hot days (mid 80’s Fahrenheit) with plenty of sunshine until the early afternoon.

Around 2pm the afternoon rain storms usually roll in. These storms typically last for an hour or two. This is a great time to take a little siesta.

After that, the weather tends to cool off a bit. But, “cools off” is a relative term. Really, it typically gets down to the mid to high seventies Fahrenheit.

The evenings tend to be clear with nice sunset views.

After sunset, you will need bug spray.

On the northern Pacific Coast in the Guanacaste Province , you can expect even less rain. Typically this area tends to stay dry a bit longer.

San Jose & Central Valley

San Jose and the Central Valley area is always bit cooler than the Pacific Coast.

The average daytime temperatures range from around 75°F to 80°F (24°C to 27°C), while nighttime temperatures usually drop to around 60°F to 65°F (16°C to 18°C).

Just note that temperatures can vary depending on the specific location within the Central Valley. Higher elevation areas tend to be cooler.

Northern Mountains

The Northern Mountains region consists of La Fortuna and Monteverde.

The days should be clear enough that you will be able to enjoy good views in mountain towns. For example, Arenal Volcano should be mostly clear for viewing.

In Monteverde , you may have more rain. Usually, it is not super heavy, but the rain can occur more throughout the day and tends not to be limited to only the afternoons.

Caribbean Coast

The Caribbean Coast has the opposite rainy and dry season the Pacific Coast. May in the Caribbean can mean heavier rains. In our experience, usually, it rains more in the evening than during the day, but you never know.

Average highs range from 80°F to 85°F (27°C to 29°C) and lows from 70°F to 75°F (21°C to 24°C).

What to Pack for Costa Rica in May

In May, layers are also a good idea because it can get cool in the evenings after the daily rain.

  • Lightweight and breathable clothing (shorts, T-shirts, tank tops). We suggest opting for moisture-wicking clothing that also blocks UV rays.
  • Long-sleeved shirts and lightweight pants for cooler evenings and sun protection
  • Swimsuits for beach and water activities
  • Comfortable walking shoes or sandals for exploring
  • Rain jacket for occasional showers during the transition to the rainy season
  • Sunglasses for sun protection

Weather-Specific Items:

  • Sunscreen (high SPF) for sun protection in the tropical climate
  • Insect repellent to ward off mosquitoes, especially during evenings
  • Daypack for carrying essentials during day trips and excursions. I suggest a dry bag.
  • Plastic bags or waterproof pouches for protecting electronics and important documents from rain

Outdoor and Adventure Gear:

  • Sturdy and comfortable hiking shoes for exploring natural trails. We like Keens .
  • Pocket binoculars for wildlife viewing, especially in national parks
  • Refillable water bottle to stay hydrated during outdoor activities. I suggest LifeStraw bottles .
  • A glasses strap to keep your sunglasses secure during adventures like zip lining and boat trips
  • Quick-dry microfiber travel towel for convenience on the go

Electronics and Accessories:

  • Camera or smartphone for capturing the stunning landscapes and wildlife
  • Portable charger to keep devices powered during outdoor excursions

Health and Safety:

  • Travel first aid kit with basic medications, bandages, and any necessary prescriptions
  • Motion sickness tablets if you’re sensitive to travel on winding roads or if you plan to take boat trips
  • Hydration tablets or electrolyte supplements for staying hydrated in the warm weather
  • Hat with a wide brim for added sun protection, especially during outdoor activities

Miscellaneous Items:

  • Copies of important documents (passport, travel insurance, itinerary)
  • Zip lock bags to separate wet items in your luggage

Check out our complete packing list for women and packing list for men for more ideas of what to bring.

The Best Places to Visit and Places to Avoid

There is nowhere I would suggest completely avoiding. You will likely have more rain on the Caribbean Coast, but it is a beautiful area to visit.

As always, you can expect more tourists in the bigger towns (La Fortuna, Monteverde, Playas del Coco, Tamarindo, Jaco, Manuel Antonio) but it shouldn’t be too crazy.

Things to Do at this Time of Year

This is a great time of year for pretty much all activities. When booking your Costa Rica tours, keep in mind that there may be afternoon storms. We like to try and schedule as much as we can in the morning to avoid the possibility of being rained out.

Some of our favorite activities are:

  • Visit a Waterfall : The water levels will be a bit higher than during the dry season, so you can enjoy a better experience.
  • Go Hiking in a National Park : We love it when everything turns lush and green again. Plus, with fewer crowds, the national parks are super enjoyable. This is a great time to go to Corcovado National Park or Manuel Antonio National Park .
  • Go Zip Lining : Again, with everything starting to turn green and vibrant in May it is a great time to get overhead views of the jungle canopy with a zip-lining adventure. We suggest this activity in Monteverde or La Fortuna .
  • Take a Catamaran Sunset Tour : This is a fun activity to do after the brief afternoon rain shower. A catamaran tour typically includes a fun time out on a nice boat, Usually, these tours are a bit cheaper than in the high season.
  • Visit the Beautiful Beaches : It is always a good time to visit the amazing beaches. All beaches in Costa Rica need to have free public access by law. That means there is thousands of miles of coastline for you to explore.

Booking Transportation

Typically, we think renting a car is the best way to easily get around.

In May, demand isn’t as high, but it is still best to book somewhat early because things can still book out.

Adobe Rent-a-Car

  • 10% discount for Costa Rica Vibes readers
  • Free second driver
  • 0% deductible on Liability Protection Insurance
  • Excellent customer service
  • New fleet of well-maintained vehicles

Some other transportation options you might consider are:

  • Book a shared shuttle on BookAway
  • Book a private shuttle with Adobe Transfers

Booking Hotels

We like to use Booking.com and reserve places with free cancellations up to a certain date. This will give you the most flexibility if your plans change or if you find a better option. Just make sure to remember to cancel in time!

We also really like VRBO for booking villas or houses. Again, we suggest filtering by places that allow free cancellation if you are concerned about your plans possibly changing.

When booking a place make sure it has AC. sometimes you might be fine with just an electric fan, but we have definitely learned to give preference to places with AC because the evenings can stay semi-warm.

Holidays and Festivals

There is one Costa Rican national holiday in May.

Labor Day : May 1st is celebrated as Labor Day in Costa Rica, and it is a public holiday. Many businesses and shops are closed, and there are often parades and demonstrations in the major cities.

Another fun festival is, Día de San Isidro Labrador on On May 15th. This event is observed in various towns near San Jose such as San Isidro de Heredia, Perez Zeledon, and Atenas.

This festivity pays homage to the patron saint of farming. It features vibrant parades, traditional cuisine, and a ceremonial blessing of the crops.

Our Travel Tips for Visiting Costa Rica in May

  • Check out flying into both the San Jose and Liberia Airport for your trip to Costa Rica in May. More and more flights are flying into Liberia Airport and sometimes you might find great deals. We like San Jose Airport because it is very centrally located, but Liberia is a lot less hectic and great if you are planning to visit the Guanacaste Province or Northern Mountain region.
  • If you need more info, we have a complete guide to Costa Rica weather with more details of what to expect in every month.
  • Don’t forget travel insurance. Since we suggest booking everything as early as possible. It is always good to have travel insurance if your travel plans change.

In conclusion, May is a great month to visit Costa Rica for a fun and unique experience. Get ready for sunny days, afternoon rains, and lush landscapes!

While May is part of the rainy season, don’t let the occasional showers dampen your spirits. Just remember to pack lightweight rain gear, insect repellent, and you’ll have an amazing experience!
