We are considering the TP from Vancouver to Japan in early Sep on Millenium. Has anyone done this cruise (northern TP)?

Curious as to weather -- is it nice enough to sit outside or is it pretty cold?

If you can't sit outside comfortably, is there enough to do on all the sea days? We love sea days but usually are sitting at the pool.

Any other insight on this itinerary would be great.

I think I would be concern about the Typhoon season.

The north pacifi is known for storms in the fall and spring. It probably be chilly enough that you won't be able to sit outside on the deck. You might even get snow in September.

The cruise is being heavily discounted.....and probably for good reason. A northern Pacific crossing will likely have mostly chilly weather. If you simply look at the September temperature averages for Dutch Harbor....the average high is in the mid-50s. It looks like a great cruise for those who love to spend lots of sea days inside the ship.

Historical Note:

When the Japanese decided to attack Pearl Harbor, they deliberately sailed across the North Pacific, figuring ( and they were right) that the stormy weather will prevent the early detection of their fleet.

We were booked on this itinerary in a Sky Suite. Unfortunately, we had to cancel a couple of weeks ago due to a conflict in our schedule. We are very disappointed. We think it is going to be a great cruise. Our TA did this cruise on the Millie last year. She said it is one of her all time favorite cruises.

I took this cruise in May 2014 (or 2015?) starting in Tokyo and ending in Vancouver. I am seriously considering taking it again in September, from Vancouver to Tokyo.

On our May cruise we had a "sweet 16" balcony for our first, and so far only, time. It turned out to be almost useless due to the cold weather :(.

Tokyo and Vancouver had nice weather, but the mid-Pacific temps. got down to 33 F (1C) for a few days. Seas were generally calm. There were no issues with "chair hogs" at the pool :p.

But we enjoyed it enough we will probably take the cruise in September. From Vancouver, there will be some 25-hour days when the ship passes through time zones and then you will lose an entire day when crossing the date line. You also get to skip port stop in Petropavlosk, Russia, which is a good thing.

Are we talking about Northface jackets? Alaska cruise wear? Mittens & hats?

We took this sailing last September and loved it. We were prepared for chilly, cloudy, cold days but were pleasantly surprised with many days of sunshine. I think we just lucked out with the good weather and wouldn't expect the same if we were to repeat it. Although we had a lot of sunshine and pleasant temps, it's not warm enough, IMO, to lay by the pool in bathing suits! Pleasant to sit outside with light jackets, however. The ports of Dutch Harbor, Otaru and Hakodate were all great.

Northern Aurora

We have actually been to Dutch Harbor/Unalaska. In our case we took the Alaska Marine Highway System ferry the Tustamena (nicknamed the Trusty Tusty) out from Kodiak and then spent several nights there before flying out (which was quite an adventure in its own right). The "Trusty Tusty" is one of the workhorses of our state ferry system and is designed to accommodate some of the conditions in the Bering Sea. It is taken out on a run to Unalaska monthly during the summer. The AMHS doesn't try to make this run during the winter.

The large ice free harbor is Dutch Harbor and is on Amaknak Island while the bulk of the community is on Unalaska Island. During WW II there was a naval base at Dutch Harbor and also Ft. Mears Army base. It was indeed bombed during WW II with some loss of life, and on both islands you will still see pill boxes and gun emplacements. Ft. Mears has been abandoned, but the views are incredible and you can walk around the old building foundations.

Given our experience on the Trusty Tusty I would expect much rougher seas than on our prior three southern trans-Pacific crossings. The Trusty Tusty is certified for open ocean sailing and does have stabilizers, but we were really rolling at times. The route that we were on is different than what the Millennium takes into Dutch Harbor, but the scenery was just incredible with dramatic volcanoes rising from the ocean. And the birding was spectacular.

Unalaska/Dutch Harbor itself is incredibly beautiful on a sunny day, but when we were there we also had one day of serious rain. The average highs in September are in the mid-50s, and while I doubt there would be snow conditions in the community itself there could be cold pelting rain.

We were scheduled to take the fall trans-Pacific on the Millennium from Vancouver to Tokyo in 2015, and then take the next cruise which was an around Japan itinerary. But the around Japan cruise was chartered and the trans-Pacific itinerary altered to end in China. So we transferred our reservations to other cruises. But we have re-booked the fall 2018 trans-Pacific and the following cruise around Japan. As I am typing this I am remembering what a hoot Dutch Harbor/Unalaska is, and am so looking forward to 2018. It is such an interesting place to visit.

For those interested in what the community looks like their Visitor and Convention Bureau has a nice color visitor's guide on their website -- with all of the photos taken on clear sunny days! A quick "google" search should find it.

Worst cruise of my life. Vancouver boarding took almost 5 hours, and

a group took control of all open seating not just at pool, but in the café

and mdr also. Staff did not take appropriate and necessary action.

Often the Blu food was beneath the MDR. MDR food cannot be brought

The tours were a total ripoff and out of control. Lunch was included but

served at 3:30. No water provided, make sure you take extra.

Guest relations turned deaf ears.

Worst cruise of my life.

I just perused your 87 posts on CC over the last 3+ years. Over 90% of them have been negative toward Celebrity, yet you keep cruising on Celebrity. It is time you find a different cruise line. Obviously, Celebrity is not a good fit for you.

We've recently done this cruise (last September). Maybe we were just lucky but we found the weather to be very pleasant during the cruise and there were no rough seas. However one stage the captain said that he had steered a particular course to avoid a storm! We sat outside and used our balcony most days although we didn't use the outside pool much. I suspect that the September crossing is a better option weather-wise than the springtime one.

Our day in Dutch Harbor was lovely and it was a good chance to get off the ship and walk around with a lot of interesting wildlife (salmon, whales & eagles). We also had good weather for our two port stops in northern Japan and it was quite hot and sunny in Tokyo.

The only bad weather was when we disembarked in Yokohama, we spent four days there but had two quite rainy days due to catching the tail end of a typhoon. We still managed to fit in quite a bit of sightseeing though!

Overall it was a great cruise and I would recommend it.

I agree with your impression that the weather in September will likely be warmer than what we had experienced on our May 2014 transpacific cruise. The discounted balcony prices gave us extra motivation.

Helen, I just "connected the dots" as we say in the U.S. and realized you and Jim were on the same private tour with us in Hakodate! We certainly got our money's worth on that tour despite all the walking! I'm glad you enjoyed the cruise as much as we did.

What is a transpacific cruise like?

A transpacific cruise is a journey between continents. Blissful days at sea as you cross the balmy Pacific are interspersed with stops at beautiful islands, from the jewel-like archipelago of French Polynesia to the desert island beauty of Fiji and Samoa. Some itineraries also call at ports on New Zealand’s North Island.

When the ship is making longer sea passages, you’ll enjoy the gentle rhythm of life on board. Sunbathe by the pool, join a class in the gym, indulge in a spa treatment, and sip cocktails as you gaze at a glorious tropical sunset. If you like to keep busy, our ships are filled with exciting activities, from quizzes to wine-tasting sessions. After dark, you’ll be treated to glittering entertainment in the theater, with live music all over the ship.

When’s the best time to cruise?

The best time to take a transpacific cruise is April and October. This is the drier season in the Pacific, with lower humidity and less rainfall. The weather should be fine for enjoying the sea passages as well as the island destinations en route.

How long are transpacific cruises?

Our transpacific cruises range from 16 to 19 nights and sail between Honolulu, Hawaii and Sydney, Australia.

Are there any visa or entry requirements for the countries visited?

It’s your responsibility to make sure you have any necessary visas for the countries you will visit. You will need a passport for a transpacific cruise. Check your government’s information for each country on your itinerary. For U.S. citizens to visit Australia, for example, either a visa or an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) is mandatory. The same applies to New Zealand.

U.S. citizens do not require a visa for entry to French Polynesia, Samoa, Vanuatu, or Fiji, but it’s important to check the latest advisory before departing on your cruise. If you do not hold a U.S. passport, check the website of your government to see up-to-date entry requirements for each destination.

What types of onboard amenities and activities are available during the cruise?

Celebrity’s contemporary ships are packed with exciting amenities and activities. You’ll find a sparkling pool and bubbling hot tubs, as well as ample sunbathing space on deck. All of our ships have a state-of-the-art fitness center and spa. 

If you’re sailing on Celebrity Solstice, you can enjoy the relaxing Lawn Club, where a game of croquet or boules on the sweet-smelling grass beckons. On Celebrity Edge , sink into a sofa with a coffee or your favorite cocktail on the Magic Carpet, a tennis court-sized platform suspended from the side of the ship with uninterrupted ocean views.

You’ll find a wide choice of bars and restaurants on board. Enjoy healthy smoothies at the Spa Café, and made-to-order burgers at the al-fresco Mast Grill. Enjoy French classics at Le Grand Bistro and delectable sushi. Entertainment ranges from mixology classes to dazzling theater shows, comedy, quizzes, and live music.

Elevate your experience to The Retreat and you’ll enjoy accommodation in a sumptuous suite, an exclusive sunbathing deck and lounge, as well as dining in Luminae at The Retreat.

What should I pack?

You’ll be sailing through the tropics on your transpacific cruise, so bring plenty of beachwear, a sun hat, sunglasses, coverups, snorkel gear, and reef-friendly sunblock. Bear in mind that if you’re sailing to, for example, New Zealand in the early spring (October) or the fall (April), you will need something for slightly cooler weather, as well as a light waterproof jacket.

Throughout the ship, casual resort wear, sundresses, shorts, polos, or button-downs are appropriate, paired with sandals, low heels, and loafers. In main and specialty dining, we ask guests to refrain from wearing swimsuits, see-through coverups or robes, bare feet, tank tops, T-shirts, and baseball caps. 

Smart Casual attire is required for entry to main dining, specialty dining, and the Celebrity Theatre. Smart Casual means you look comfortable yet tasteful in a dress, skirt, long pants, or jeans with a stylish top or button-down. Shorts and flip-flops are not considered Smart Casual. 

Each itinerary features one to two more “formal” nights that we call Evening Chic. Evening Chic means you dress to impress, glamorous and sophisticated in your own way, with a cocktail dress, skirt, slacks, or designer jeans, an elegant dress top, or blazer—some guests even pack a tuxedo or gown for onboard photos. 

The daily program, delivered to your stateroom and available at the Guest Relations Desk, will be your guide to the correct attire each evening. If you do not wish to participate in Evening Chic, Smart Casual attire is acceptable for dining and attending the theater.

Where do these cruises depart from?

Our transpacific cruises depart from either Sydney, Australia, or Honolulu, Hawaii.

What are the typical ports of call?

Ports of call on a transpacific cruise might include Auckland and the beautiful Bay of Islands in New Zealand. Depending on the itinerary you’ve chosen, you may have several stops in French Polynesia, including Papeete, Moorea, and Raiatea. 

Other itineraries head to Fiji, Vanuatu, and Samoa for exquisite beaches and the rich local culture. Many also include an overnight stay in Honolulu or a day at Kailua Kona. On any of our transpacific itineraries, you’ll have nine or 10 days at sea to enjoy the ship and the tropical sunshine.

My wife and I enjoyed an amazing 5 day, 4 night cruise on the Celebrity Reflection September 16-20, 2024.

We drove from our home in Jacksonville the day before the cruise and stayed at the Fairfield Inn and Suites, Airport and Cruise Port. This is a great pre-cruise hotel that serves a full breakfast!

The shuttle at the hotel left at 10:15 a.m. however my boarding time was 12:30. I was concerned they wouldn’t let my wife and I in Terminal 25, however, I was pleasantly surprised that when we arrived around 10:45 a.m. we went straight into the terminal, breezed through security, sat in the waiting area for about 15 minutes then we were on the ship about 11:30 or so.

So what about the muster drill?

It was great! While I was still at the hotel, I was on the Celebrity App and was able to complete 2 of the 3 steps. I had to watch a short video about the safety procedure, and another video with the sound of the loud short and loud blast of the ship’s horn. The 3rd and final step was as soon as my wife and I stepped on the ship, we walked to our muster station at the Ensemble Lounge on Deck 5, checked in with a member or the crew. He showed us how to use the lifevest, said a few words, then we had completed the muster drill. Special note, we didn’t need our cabin room card key to check in at the muster station! All we needed was our printed out boarding pass! Easy!!!

Were we able to drop off your carry-on luggage in the cabin?

Yes, we were in cabin 8304 (aft balcony) and not only did we drop off our luggage, our cabin was ready and our cabin steward said we could stay in our cabin without having to come back later!

How was cabin 8304?

The cabin is totally old school. No usb outlets, only 2 US outlets and one European electrical outlet. Keep in mind she was launched way back in 2012 and did have a recent refurbishment, but you don’t need your card key inserted to keep the cabin lights on!

I love the layout of the Oceanview Cafe. Free hand scooped ice cream, lots of food choices, lots of seating and even outside seating at the very back of the ship.

Because of my “Select” Captain’s club status, we were able to choose anytime dining. The food was amazing! We had Beef Wellington, Escargot, French onion soup and some great desserts. We passed on the Specialty Restaurants, but I remember when I sailed on Solstice many years ago, Murano (the French Restaurant) and Tuscan Grille (Steakhouse) had amazing food. Blu is another great restaurant reserved for the Aqua Spa folks. Lastly, the Mast Grill up on Deck 15 had great burgers, hotdogs, fries, etc.

We didn’t go to any of the shows in the Theater. When I looked at the daily planner, nothing really jumped out at me. I will have to say that the traditional Pool VolleyBall Tournament between the officers and some guests was the highlight of the entertainment we saw.

What about the DJ and music down there in the atrium. How was that?

That was one of my big complaints that I mentioned on my online survey after the cruise. The sound of the music was deafening. I love Elton John, Abba, etc, but they had the music on so loud in that Atrium we just kept walking. It’s a shame because it would have been a great experience.

So this was a 4 night cruise, left on a Monday and returned on a Friday. What were the ports of call?

We left Port Everglades on Monday, Tuesday was a seaday and on Wed we arrived in Coco Cay. On a scale of 1 to 10 it was a 20. Absolutely perfect weather! We took the free tram over to South Beach which is one of the free options on Coco Cay. Plenty of stuff to do there for young and old, basketball court, table tennis, etc. You can also rent a jet ski over there. Also free food at the snack shack, burgers, hotdogs and the very popular funnel cake.

Then we arrived in Bimini on Thursday. I’ve been to Bimini twice, once on Virgin Voyages Scarlet Lady and on the Carnival Liberty. My wife want to take a tour, so I reached out to Bimini Island Tours. Max was our tour guide and my wife and I really experienced the culture of Bimini. We went to a local bakery, had some local soda, went to the famous Dolphin Museum and saw a live Conch demonstration. Again, perfect weather and we had a great 2 hour tour of Bimini.

How was debarkation? Did you do self-debarkation or did you leave your luggage outside the door?

Because my wife was with me, yes, we left two bags outside the door. Debarkation was perfect. We had tag number 35 so our time was like 9:30.

We ate a relaxing full breakfast at the Ocean Cafe, then later, our number was called. They have that Face Recognition technology, so we didn’t have to show our passports. We then asked a porter to help us, tipped him $20 and he escorted us to a cab. Only $25 to go back to the Fairfield Inn.

Would you go again?

Absolutely! We loved the ship, the service, the food, and our balcony cabin. I’d go again tomorrow. The boarding and debarkation process was perfect.
