Costa Cruises begins new cruise season in India with Costa Serena
Costa Serena has commenced her 2023/24 cruise season in India, homeporting in Mumbai throughout the winter until January next year.
The ship will sail 23 roundtrip itineraries of 2 to 5 nights from Mumbai to Kochi, Goa and, for the first time ever, the beautiful Lakshadweep islands. The last roundtrip cruise of the season will also include a port call in the Maldives.
In a sign of the growing importance of India as a cruise destination and cruise home market, Costa Cruises said in a statement that the cruise experience aboard Costa Serena has been tailored to offer “warm hospitality and customization with Indian cuisine and entertainment”.
Costa Cruises will be joining Cordelia Cruises in Mumbai, with the homegrown Indian cruise brand also sailing a range of roundtrip cruises on the Indian coastline.

Local cruise and tourism officials, including Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways; Francesco Raffa, Director Asia Region & Growth Markets, Costa Cruises; Nalini Gupta, Lotus Aero Enterprises, GSA of Costa Cruises, and others gathered aboard Costa Serena to mark the start of the new season.
Costa Cruises sailings in India are popular with both families and couples looking for an international cruise experience with Italian hospitality. The cruise line has homeported in India for several years, most recently offering week-long itineraries out of Mumbai to the Maldives.
“We are extremely happy to sail again in India where we’ve been operating since 2016,” said Francesco Raffa, Director Asia Region & Growth Markets, Costa Cruises. “We are bringing to our Indian guests out authentic Italian hospitality with a local personalisation in terms of food and entertainment.”

“India is an important market for Costa, both for our established Fly&Cruise programs to Dubai and the Mediterranean, and for our newly introduced local operations sailing domestically,” he added. “We are grateful to the Indian government for the efforts to support the domestic tourism and on infrastructures development. India is working to develop the cruise industry and we are excited to sail together towards the vision of the Indian government.”
Costa Serena has a total of 1,500 cabins, 505 of which have private balconies, as well as several lounges, a dozen restaurants and many more bars and cafes across 14 passenger decks.
The ship also features a wellness centre and gym with a sea views, a beauty salon, a theatre, restaurants serving Indian and international cuisine, 4 swimming pools, 2 of which are under a retractable glass roof, a shopping area, and a kids’ club for children and teenagers.

The 4 best cruises to take in India this year
By Ria Gupta

From the early days of exploration to modern luxury liners, sailing has long been a way to see the world from a different perspective. While cruise culture in India is still young, several operators and companies across the country are carving out a niche for themselves by offering new ways to see the country and travel slow and easy. State-of-the-art vessels equipped with modern amenities offer the perfect vantage to enjoy India’s wealth of culture, history and wildlife. From the backwaters of Kerala to the Ganges and Brahmaputra with their bustling ports and historical cities, here is our pick of the four best cruises in India that you can take this year.
Secret of Sunderbans Jungle Cruise by Antara Cruises

Wildlife enthusiasts look no further. The five-day Sunderbans Jungle cruise aboard the Ganges Voyager traces the culture and wildlife along the majestic Hooghly River. The vessel embarks from Kolkata and makes its way towards the fishing port of Namkhana, the gateway to the Sundarbans. The ship cruises past towns and villages till it enters the protected mangrove forests. Hereon, there are stops at various watchtowers and islands for sightings of endangered crocodiles, terrapins, migratory birds and if you are lucky, the elusive Royal Bengal Tiger . The Sundarbans with its unique and fragile biodiversity has a wealth of flora and fauna that will be pointed out by an expert naturalist on board. This apart, there is plenty to take in by way of culture and history—from centuries-old temples to glimpses of local life in the surrounding villages. The days are spent either meandering down the river or excursions onshore, evenings are usually reserved for unwinding over drinks and watching folk dances and musical performances from the region. The Ganges Voyager is an all-suite ship which can accommodate up to 56 guests and is done up in a heritage colonial style with Burma teak, vintage furniture and hand-stencilled walls. There are five categories of rooms across three decks, all of which offer expansive views from floor to ceiling windows or balconies. The ship has a restaurant offering an array of local delicacies as well as Continental fare, a lounge, sun deck and a fitness centre and spa for some quick rejuvenation after a day of sightseeing.
Fare: From Rs1,20,000 per person including stay, all onboard activities, onground excursions as per the itinerary, all meals and complimentary yoga sessions.
Next sailing date: 17 February 2023
Brahmaputra Maximum by Assam Bengal Navigation

For those who want an immersive dive into the riverine culture of Assam, this 10-night cruise along the Brahmaputra packs it all in. This journey begins at Neamati Ghat which is 1.5 hours from Jorhat Airport. Adventures begin from day two as you sail down the mighty Brahmaputra and witness the river in its splendid flow. Enroute you will stop to see the temples of Sibsagar, the one-time capital of the Ahom kings of Assam; have lunch at an Assamese tea estate; and cruise to Majuli Island for a shore excursion. The cruise follows villages and historical sites along the Brahmaputra till it reaches the boundaries of the Kaziranga National Park. Elephants can be spotted on the banks as well as the park’s most famous denizen, the one-horned rhino, so keep a lookout. Guests will enjoy three jungle safaris across different parts of this expansive and stunning national park. The rest of the days are spent meandering through local markets on rickshaws in Tezpur, visiting temple ruins, river islands and stopping by to learn about Assamese silk weaving in Sualkuchi, the centre of the silk industry in the state. ABN operates its cruises from July to April. The Brahmaputra cruises begin in October. March and April is the best time to spot wildlife. The Brahmaputra Maximum journeys are undertaken in the ABN Sukapha and ABN Charaidew II. ABN Sukapha is a 12-cabin vessel designed especially for the waters of the Brahmaputra, while the ABN Charaidew II is a newer and sprawling 18-cabin addition to the fleet, which cruises faster than others thanks to an extra-shallow draught. The ABN Sukapha is designed as an expedition-style boat with cane and bamboo decor, a dining room, sundeck, a spa and a saloon with a library. The ABN Charaidew II is a colonial-style ship complete with wood and rattan accents, local Assamese art and handloom furnishings. There is a lounge, dining room, spa and expansive sundeck perfect for sunset views and cocktails. The food is locally sourced and buffet-style with an expansive roster of local dishes.

This five-day round trip from Mumbai covers Kochi and Lakshwadweep packs in a host of onshore and offshore activities and also allows you to party away all your nights at sea. The highlight of the journey falls somewhere between day one and two, when the vessel touches the international waters and the open seas provide fabulous views in all directions. From there, the ship heads to Kochi, where those who opt for land excursions head out to explore popular landmarks of the city such as Fort Kochi, St Francis Church, Mattancherry Palace and more. Day four is a trip to Lakshwadweep, where the ship is anchored and guests disembark via smaller boats to reach Agatti beach. Backwater cruise by Spice Coast Cruises by CGH earth

Explore the backwater life in a kettuvallam. These traditional boats were once used to ferry grain and spices and have been refurbished with modern amenities while keeping their bamboo and coir frame intact. The cruises by CGH Earth take a round trip from Alleppey to Kumarakom on the Vembanad Lake. A one-night journey is perfect for a quick introduction to the backwaters. On longer journeys, the boat docks at the banks for guided tours that explore the local life and culture. You can cycle through village roads, try your hands at toddy tapping, watch the local fishermen at work, or wander around the paddy fields. There are plenty of local markets to explore and smaller wooden canoes to paddle through the narrow canals. Onboard, the food is a mix of local fare including freshly caught karimeen from the lake cooked in the local style with plenty of chillies and coconut and accompanied by kuttanadan red rice, lentils and greens.

Named after the Hindu goddess, Ganga, the Ganges River is the second largest river on the Indian subcontinent, flowing through some of the most populated regions of India and Bangladesh.
The Ganges is a much-revered and holy river in Hindu culture and is widely regarded as the epitome of India's traditions and lifestyle.
The Ganges River starts in the Himalayas and empties into the Bay of Bengal, supporting many rural and urban communities along the way. Along its banks, human life is connected to its waters.
Cruise north from Kolkata and explore small villages, meet with the locals, interact with goldsmiths and visit pottery makers.
A boat ride at sunrise
Sunrise boat rides gives the early riser a view of the temples and shrines bathed in a golden hue with Hindu devotees performing their cleansings along the ghats. You also get to see people performing morning sun salutations, chanting, meditations, yoga postures, as well as washing their clothes on the Ganges.
A lot of Indian men, women and children are gathered along the Ganges River. A dip in the Ganges is considered holy and purifying, so many bath in it.
Most are so devout and absorbed in their water ritual, that they can be casual about the tourists' boats observing and photographing their every move.
Experience an evening aarti
The Ganga Aarti is one of the most beautiful experiences in India. The spiritually uplifting ceremony is performed every evening to honor the River Goddess, Ganga.
The aarti ritual is of high religious significance. Fire is used as an offering to the river. You need to witness the event to actually understand its meaning.
An aarti is a devotional ritual usually made in the form of a lit lamp, and in the case of the Ganges River, a small diya with a candle and flowers float down the river. The purpose of aarti is to show humility and gratitude to the God's divine form.

India's first Domestic Luxury Cruise
India never really had its very own luxury cruise. But now, you can take a cruise from Mumbai to Goa with India's first ever domestic luxury passenger cruise ship, Angriya.
Named after the great Angria Bank Coral Reef located near Vijaydurg in Maharashtra, and the first Maratha Navy Admiral, Kanhoji Angre, Angriya packs some state of the art on board luxury, amenities and safety.
The vessel is expected to come loaded with a host of luxury services such as indoor games, round-the-clock cafés and eight different types of restaurants, lounges, recreation room, and even an on-deck pool. The ship can accommodate up to 350 passengers and additional staff.
A joyful ride through the Mumbai-Goa coastline is to be expected. You will also be provided two meals and a brunch. The scenic beauty of the Konkan coastline will keep you mesmerized.
While ensuring that you are given the best assistance on necessary services, the ship's staff will also guide you about the historical relevance of the region.
Schedule and fares
Angriya is set to depart from Mumbai Port at 5 pm on alternate days and reach Goa at 9 am the next day. The cruise line will return to Mumbai Port every alternate day filled with passengers. The 15-hour journey gives passengers plenty of time to enjoy the luxuries and scenery on board.
The price for this cruise starts at US$110. Although it is more expensive compared to other modes of transport, a cruise line is more about experiencing the journey and not just getting to the destination.
A first class flight from Mumbai to Goa offers fewer amenities and comfort yet costs almost the same as a luxury cruise.
Goa is one of India's most beloved tourist destinations. Though the Arabian Sea and the miles of golden coastline are popular among tourist, the long and wide beautiful rivers offer an incredible opportunity for river cruises. River cruises in Goa have become a major tourist attraction.
Your cruise will take you through the tranquil backwaters and thrill of marine exploration where you can enjoy the spectacular views of the surroundings. You may row down the mesmerizing Mandovi River to relish the exhilarating experience.
Among all the cruising trips in Goa, you cannot escape the dancing boat cruise. This is an hour-long cruise which is fun-filled. You will enjoy the magnificent glimpses of Panjim while dancing to the beats of good music. Sunset cruise in Goa is equally popular where you can experience moonbeams, excitement and thrill.
A cruise of India's Kerala region and into the famous backwaters gives visitors a chance to explore the network of waterways stretching across almost 1200 miles of Kerala's lowlands. Kettuvallams or rice barges converted to houseboats are a unique feature of these backwaters.
As you cruise along, you will see all characteristics of Indian rural life; people washing their clothes, men fishing, children playing, as well as goods being moved along the waterways. It could essentially be said that Kerala's geography combined with its strong culture provides a wonderful introduction to India and its people.
Although it's associated with India river cruises, the Brahmaputra River passes through several countries and has been given many names.
It is only when it passes through the lush Assam valley in the northeast corner of India that it becomes the Brahmaputra, or 'Son of Brahma,' in tribute to one of the greatest Hindu deities.
While not as famous as the Ganges River, the Brahmaputra River can also take cruise passengers to historic palaces, forts and temples, and offer them a fascinating glimpse into the daily lives of remote tribes whose customs have prevailed for centuries.
The Brahmaputra River Cruise is a fantastic cruise experience for those travelers who wish to get away from the crowds and tourist trap areas. It is an amazing opportunity to explore a rarely visited part of India with the comfort and convenience of cruising.
Cruise Lines and itineraries
The Brahmaputra River cruise season runs from November to April, when the monsoon rains are over, the floods and humidity have receded, leaving the landscape lush and the temperatures warm but bearable.
A handful of UK and US. tour operators offer this river cruise including Saga Cruises, International Expeditions, and Fred River Cruises.
Most popular options are the 7-night Brahmaputra cruises, which are often combined with tours of India's 'Golden Triangle' cities which are Delhi, Agra and Jaipur. Pre and post cruise stays in Kolkata can also be arranged; most itineraries include at least one overnight stay there.
Branching off the mighty Ganges near the Bangladesh border, the Hooghly River flows 260 km to the sea through a bewildering, intoxicating part of East India, which for the most part, is still off the mainstream tourism radar.
An expedition on the Lower Ganges or Hooghly is one of the prettiest river journeys imaginable. The river travels its way through the lush countryside of West Bengal with its culturally significant towns crammed with temples and palaces.
A rich and vibrant rural life flourishes and there is never a dull moment as you serenely cross this pleasant waterway. Life continues here as it has for generations on farmland rich with banana and mango groves, and rice paddies.
Tiny fishing boats float on the waters, sometimes escorted by rare Ganges dolphins, and villagers regularly bathe and wash clothes in the river, as water buffalo, goats and cows wander the shores.
Hoogly River cruises are the most wonderful way to experience this hidden India. Here you will find the historic European colonies, great palaces and forts as in Murshidabad, the battlefield of Plassey and the many monuments of the medieval Islamic capital of Gaur. A highlight is several delightful and little known Bengali Terracotta temples in the town of Kalna.
You can choose between different cruise operators on the Hooghly, some of which are the Assam Bengal Navigation Company and Pandaw Cruises. Dates of travel are largely dependent by the choice of boat and itinerary you wish to join. The best time to cruise on this river is from October to April.
Like most vacations, river cruises have any number of moving parts, from flight details to your actual river cruise booking, to reservations for hotels, transfers, and maybe even private dinners out or museum appointments. Here are some tips that might help ease your trip.
Double Check Your Documentation
Of all the tips for a smoother river cruising, this is the most important. Double-check absolutely everything related to your trip, from your cruise tickets to flight bookings, hotel reservations, and transfer arrangements.
Make sure names are spelled as stated in your passport, and that dates of birth are inputted correctly.
Manage Your Flights Online
This could be the second-most important tip, and it is such an easy and often overlooked one. Make sure you manage your flights online in advance of your trip. Pull up your booking and ensure your flights are still on the same schedule. Reconfirm your flight arrangements.
Frequently, airline schedules can change between the time of booking and your actual trip.
Resist the urge to over pack. Storage space is limited on most river cruise ships, and the more luggage you take with you, the more you're going to have to fuss with it at airports, on motor coaches and pre-and-post hotel stays. Keep things to one case and have one carry-on bag if at all possible.
Items to pack
Like most modes of travel, river cruising is an inexact science, susceptible to weather events and other unforeseen circumstances that may impact your travel. Some essential items that you need to pack are basic medicines and toiletries.
It could rain anytime, so carrying an umbrella is a good idea. Sunglasses, sunhat, and sunscreen are also must-brings.

Sun, Sand And Sea: The Future Of The Indian Cruise Market With an aim of increasing cruise passenger traffic, various initiatives have been taken by the government.
By Kabir Singh Bhandari • Nov 8, 2023
Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own.
You're reading Entrepreneur India, an international franchise of Entrepreneur Media.
The Indian cruise market has huge potential, buoyed on by an increasing demand and disposable incomes. With an aim of increasing cruise passenger traffic, various initiatives have been taken by the government, such as infrastructure upgradation, rationalisation of port fees, removing ousting charges, providing e-visa facilities and many others. A significant step towards this took place recently with the launch of the domestic sailing of the first international cruise liner Costa Serena in Mumbai, in the presence of Sarbananda Sonowal, Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways.
At the event, Sonowal spoke extensively about the future of cruise tourism in India, which can be broken down into five significant observations:
1. A series of initiatives taken by the government to promote and to revitalize the cruise tourism industry and India is what ultimately has led to the launch of the Italian luxury liner which shall be followed by several others too in the coming future.
2. The measures taken by the government to boost the sector include constitutional uniform, single rate for all major ports, SOP for customs and immigration, modernization of cruise terminal with enhanced passengers' facility, among others.
3. The cruise tourism has seen a 180% rise in operation during the last nine years.
4. The launch of domestic sailing by Costa Cruises is not just a significant event for the tourism sector, but also a major contributor for the national economy. The arrival of these luxury ventures will radically result in the creation of numerous job opportunities, including jobs in various domains such as hospitality, catering, entertainment and ship operations. The cruise industry stimulates local businesses and boosts demand in regional economies.
5. The exploration of the coastal regions of India shall be boosted by these measures, which will help in not only showcasing the rich cultural and national diversity of India but also give a push to tourism related businesses such as hotels, restaurants and tour operators.
At the event, along with him were present Francesco Raffa Director Asia Region & Growth Markets, Costa Cruises and Nalini Gupta of Lotus Aero Enterprises and other senior officials. Starting off on November 4, 2023 till January 11, 2023, Costa Serena is set to home port in Mumbai and shall offer a total of 23 cruises from 2 to 5 days, visiting Mumbai, Cochin, Goa and the Lakshadweep Islands.

Taj Mahal: The Eternal Masterpiece
The epitome of Mughal architecture, the Taj Mahal is so grand it warrants two visits – one at dawn and another at dusk, when its color looks entirely different. Opportunities to view other icons of the Mughal empire abound, as hauntingly beautiful Agra Fort and the red sandstone former capital of Fatehpur Sikri are easily within reach. An expressive kathak dance performance and a consultation with a leading astrologer shed light on the local culture, while shopping in Agra reveals the exquisite quality of Indian jewelry.

- Economy-class flights to Delhi and Cochin
- Travel in air-conditioned deluxe coaches

Himalayan Kingdom of Nepal
Become immersed in the culture of Nepal, a country shaped in many ways by the snowcapped Himalayas. That backdrop looks especially dramatic while flying by iconic Mount Everest, yet the cities may be even more striking. Extraordinary stupas rise above Patan, Newari architecture graces Kathmandu and all of medieval Bhaktapur is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Unusual cultural opportunities include an audience with a Kumari living goddess, watching an Aarti prayer offering at a Hindu temple and seeing how singing bowls are used to heal by sound.
- 3 nights in Kathmandu
- Economy-class flights per the itinerary
- Flightseeing over the Himalayas near Mt. Everest
- Visits to 2 UNESCO World Heritage sites
- An audience with a kumari living goddess in Patan
- Camera charges at sites

Ajanta & Ellora Caves
Explore two UNESCO World Heritage site cave complexes, both hand-cut from solid rock to create religious sanctuaries. The 2nd-century Ajanta Caves contain arguably the world’s most important Buddhist wall paintings. The colors are still vibrant, thanks to an infra-red restoration process that removed centuries of grime. The Ellora Caves are noteworthy because their stone sanctuaries are devoted to Buddhism, Hinduism and Jainism, a clear illustration of ancient India’s religious tolerance. The enormous, heavily ornamented Kailasa temple there was carved from a single block of stone.
- 3 nights in Aurangabad
- Economy-class internal flights
- Tours of the Ajanta and Ellorca Caves
- Visit the Black Taj tomb
- Watch artisans weave shawls and sarees

Cruise to Mumbai (Bombay), India
Things to do in mumbai (bombay).

Memorable Mumbai
Gateway of India, arch monument in Mumbai, India
South Mumbai is the worldliest part of the city and home to many of its most-loved sights. Walk around the base of the massive Gateway of India — the arch-shaped monument was built in 1924 and meant to be the first thing visitors see when they arrive by boat. Or pop your head inside the Taj Mahal Palace hotel, one of India's most opulent and recognizable buildings.

Seaside Meditation
View of Mumbai, India, from Marine Drive
Communion with nature is more meditative when you make the journey to the seaside Shree Mahalakshmi Temple — less than an hour each way from the cruise terminal by taxi. And check out Chowpatty Beach, where thousands of locals come to dunk statues of the god Ganesh into the waves each year in September.

Carved From History
Hop aboard one of the many boats bound for Elephanta Island, which sits just offshore from Mumbai and is home to the Elephanta Caves. At this UNESCO World Heritage Site, you'll find caves full of otherworldly rock carvings in both the Hindu and Buddhist traditions.

Local Cuisine
Mumbai is home to fine restaurants, but the best way to understand its culinary disposition is with its street food. Sit down for a masala dosa , India's take on a crepe, which in Mumbai is served with spicy tomato sauce. During your cruise to India, enjoy one of the many fritters for sale at Chowpatty Beach — the potato-and-onion bhaji is popular among vegetarians.

Mumbai is a shopper's pardise, whether you take a walk down Colaba Causeway to browse traditional Mahrashtran jewelry or snag a vintage Bollywood movie poster from any of the souvenir stalls in Apollo Bandar, the neighborhood nearest to the cruise ship terminal. Alternatively, take home a piece of Indian fashion in the form of a woman's sari.

Royal Enfield set to reveal Himalayan 450 prices at EICMA 2023; commences pre-bookings in India

The Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 introduces several pioneering features for the company, such as a liquid-cooled engine, lighter components, an all-digital console, and a ride-by-wire system.

Royal Enfield has unveiled the latest iteration of the Himalayan at EICMA 2023, marking its global debut. Alongside sharing comprehensive details about the new adventure tourer, the company initiated pre-bookings in India for the motorcycle.
Interested customers can now secure their orders for the new Himalayan by paying a token amount of ₹ 10,000. Deliveries are slated to commence subsequent to the price announcement, scheduled for November 24 at RE Motoverse.
The highly awaited launch of the Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 is a significant milestone for the company this year. It signifies a pivotal shift towards adopting advanced technologies while staying true to the brand's core values. The official launch of the Himalayan 450 is set to take place at the annual RE Motoverse festival in Goa, a gathering that attracts Royal Enfield owners and enthusiasts from around the globe. In the past, the company introduced the 650 Twins at Rider Mania and has made it a tradition to showcase something special each year at the event.
Interestingly, the latest Royal Enfield Himalayan introduces several pioneering features for the company, such as a liquid-cooled engine, lighter components like a forged piston, an all-digital console, and a ride-by-wire system. Its power source is the newly engineered Sherpa 450 engine. This single-cylinder engine can produce 39.4 bhp at 8,000 rpm and 40 Nm at 5,500 rpm. It is coupled with a 6-speed gearbox equipped with a slip-and-assist clutch.
The adventure tourer is built on an entirely new twin-spar platform featuring 43 mm USD front forks and a 7-step adjustable monoshock at the rear. Its braking system comprises a 320 mm single front disc and a 270 mm rear disc with dual-channel ABS. Additionally, riders have the ability to deactivate the rear ABS module when venturing off-road.
Equipped with ride-by-wire technology, the bike offers two distinct riding modes: Eco and Performance. Moreover, it boasts a larger 17-litre fuel tank, while the stock seat height has been raised to 825 mm, with an option to increase it further to 845 mm.
The Himalayan 450 is equipped with 21-inch front and 17-inch rear spoke wheels. During its launch in India, it will come with tubed tires, with the plan to introduce tubeless tires after completing the homologation process. The bike features Ceat rubber, co-developed with Royal Enfield, with a 90/90 unit for the front tire and a 140/80 unit for the rear.
Moroever, the new Royal Enfield Himalayan will be released in three variants: Base, Pass, and Summit, at the time of its launch. It will offer a choice of five color options, with only one color carried over from the previous Himalayan 411.
