Breathtaking Tours from Australia

Egypt has been attracting travelers from all around the world for well over one hundred years already, whereas Jordan only made it onto the tourist map at a much later stage, and this in itself makes it a great place to visit alongside Egypt.

Jordan might not have the Giza Pyramids and an almost infinite number of ancient temples and tombs like Egypt has, but it certainly has some truly unforgettable attractions, including the indescribable Rose Red City of Petra , an ancient city carved out of rock, and a place everyone should strive to see at least once in their lifetime.

CREATE YOUR DREAM TRIP

Why Book Egypt-Jordan Tours from Australia?

Even if you are a seasoned traveler who has already traveled to Egypt and Jordan from Australia, there are still so many things that can go wrong during a trip if you are traveling independently. Not least, is the fact that your vacation could end up costing you way more than what you would pay for a package tour booked through a reputable tour operator.

For example, when you book one of our Egypt Jordan tours from Australia, you are quite literally never alone because there will always be one of our tour representatives with you, and all transport to and from airports and during your tours is included in all our tour packages, meaning you never have to waste money or precious time trying to navigate your way from one attraction to the next.

Additionally, many locals cannot speak English, which in itself can lead to even more problems. Again, this is something you need not be concerned about when you travel with us because our tour representatives can all speak English, and are happy to act as translators when the need arises.

Are Egypt Jordan Tours Safe?

At Egypt Tours Plus, we take the personal safety of our clients extremely seriously, and at no point during any of our tours, would we ever consider taking any one of our clients to an area where they could end up in harm’s way. Remember, we are the most well-established tour operator in the country, and we have plenty of people on the ground that are constantly monitoring local conditions and circumstances in the areas our clients will be visiting during our Egypt Jordan tours from Australia.

One only needs to read through some of our customer reviews in order to determine just how safe our clients feel when they travel with us. Also, both Egypt and Jordan rely heavily on tourism, and to this end they go above and beyond what you might expect in order to ensure travelers can safely enjoy these two fabulous countries.

Of course, if you choose to go out and explore on your own in the evenings, or during free days when there are no tours scheduled, then take the same basic precautions that you would take in any other country, including your own country. For instance, don’t carry unnecessary valuables or excessive amounts of cash around with you.

Likewise, if you are traveling on your own, it is never advisable for you to stroll around on your own at night in very quiet and/or very dimly lit areas, but again, this applies to most countries.

Visa Requirements when Traveling Egypt and Jordan from Australia

While entry visas are required for both Egypt and Jordan, the process for obtaining them is very easy and very straightforward for Australian citizens. One thing to keep in mind though is that you must have at least six months left in your passport when you arrive. Okay, let’s take a brief look at the visa requirements for each of the two countries:

Egypt Tourist Visa on Arrival or e-Visa

As an Australian citizen, you essentially have two options when it comes to getting a tourist visa for Egypt. You can either obtain a visa on arrival at the airport when you arrive in the country, or you can apply for an e-visa in advance. A Visa-on-Arrival ($25.00) gives you 30 days in the country, while an e-visa ($25.00) gives you 60 days. However, Australians can also apply for a 90-Day e-visa ($60.00) which is a multi-entry visa that allows you leave and re-enter as many times as you wish during the 90-Day period.

The e-visa system was only introduced in 2017 in order to simply the visa process, and to make it possible for the citizens of certain countries to avoid long queues at the airport on arrival. We recommend applying for an e-visa no less than 7 to 10 days before your trip to Egypt. Don’t worry, if you need assistance with your e-visa application, one of our tour representatives will be more than happy to assist you.

Jordan Tourist Visa

Australians also have no problem getting a tourist visa for Jordan either. A single entry tourist visa on arrival can be obtained at Queen Alia International Airport in Amman as well as at Aqaba Airport. These are typically valid for one month, but it is possible to get your visa extended up to a maximum of 6 months by registering at a police station in Jordan.

  • Multiple entry visas for Jordan are only available through Jordanian embassies and consulates.
  • If you are going to be leaving Jordan within 24 hours of your arrival, visa fees are waived. However, all of our Egypt Jordan tours from Australia typically include at least three or four days in Jordan.

With so many incredible things to see and do in these two fascinating countries, and considering how easy it is to obtain visas, it is hardly surprising that our Egypt Jordan tours from Australia are becoming increasingly popular among Australians who are looking for a once in a lifetime vacation.

To be able to actually see the places and artifacts that I had read about and studied was truly phenomenal. Our hotels were great, the travel to and from sites was completely taken care of, we never felt unsafe or left to our own devices, and the itinerary was just right. But what made the experience so fab was our two guides - Mahmoud Nour in Luxor/Aswan/Abu Simbel and "Max" in Cairo/Memphis/Saqqara. They taught us history and context as it related to each site we visited and they indulged my myriad questions. They were both so incredibly knowledgeable and my questions were never ignored or unanswered. In addition, they shared their culture with us and treated us to some awesome dining experiences. We were reminded that Egypt is more than just ancient ruins. I would recommend without reservation this tour experience. And "hats off" to Mahmoud and Max!!! The entire experience was smooth from start to finish. Both Mahmoud and Max spoke excellent English, were extremely knowledgeable, and went out of their way to ensure our experience was everything we hoped it would be. Our Egypt, Jordan tours from Australia provide a perfect blend of sightseeing and relaxation in two extraordinary destinations. When you book Egypt and Jordan tours from Australia through us, you are booking through a tour operator that has been providing exceptional tours since 1955. For this reason, we believe that our Egypt, Jordan tours from Australia are as flawless as possible.

Great Accommodation from Beginning to End

Our tours are as much about comfort as they are about sightseeing. To this end, all of our existing Egypt, Jordan tours from Australia feature 4 and/or 5 star hotel accommodation exclusively. The only exceptions would be if choose one of our Egypt and Jordan tours from Australia that feature camping in the desert. A few of our multi-destination tours might also include accommodation in eco-lodges which essentially don’t have any star rating. However, even such accommodation is bound to impress you.

Cruising the Nile in Style

Nearly all of our existing Egypt, Jordan tours from Australia include a  Nile River cruise . As is the case with hotel accommodation, we only ever book our clients onto 5-Star cruises. These river cruisers are very much the same as hotel. They include the same sort of amenities that one would expect to find at any good hotel.

There are also various services available on board these vessels, including massage and spa services. All the cruises that are featured in our tours include full board. Enjoy 3 full meals a day throughout your cruise without have to worry about additional expenses. Most cruises also include free on-board entertainment in the evenings.

Things like snacks, beverages and any additional meals are not included in the prices of our Egypt, Jordan tours from Australia. Laundry services are available on board the vessels, but laundry expenses are not included in our tour prices.

It is worth noting that most of the services and amenities mentioned above are not available on a Dahabiya cruise. These traditional river yachts are far smaller than the larger boats, and space is therefore limited. Dahabiya boats can typically only accommodate up to about 12 to 15 people. These cruises also include full board. They also tend to cost more, but if you want a much more personal experience compared to a regular cruise, then it would take a lot to beat a Dahabiya cruise.

Expertly Guided Egypt, Jordan tours from Australia

All of our Egypt, Jordan tours from Australia included the services or professional English-speaking guides. In nearly all instances, tours in Cairo are private guided tours with one of our Egyptologist guides and your own private driver. If your chosen tour includes a Nile River cruise, all tours and excursions during the cruise will be small group tours. Tour groups are kept small, and they are also led by one of our Egyptologist guides.

One or more of our guides always sail with the boat so that they can accompany our clients to the various sites that are visited during a Nile cruise. They only sail with the vessel to serve as guides during excursions. Under no circumstances will they invade your privacy during your cruise, but they will always be there to offer assistance if need be, or to share their vast amount of knowledge with you.

In Jordan, you will have your own private English-speaking driver, but you won’t have a full-time guide with you. Instead, we work with local English-speaking specialist guides at the various sites that are featured in our Egypt, Jordan tours from Australia. For example, you will have a specialist local guide to show you around at the Lost City of Petra; different guide to show you around at Jerash, and etc.

The Best Sightseeing Imaginable

As has been mentioned already, our Egypt, Jordan tours from Australia have all been designed by a company that has been providing high quality tours since 1955. With this amount experience behind us, you can be certain that our tours feature only the very best attractions, both in Egypt and Jordan.

Most of our Egypt, Jordan tours from Australia begin in Cairo. Generally speaking, there will be one or two full days of sightseeing in and around Cairo. Places such as the Giza Pyramids; the Sphinx and the Egyptian Museum feature in more or less all of our existing Egypt and Jordan tours from Australia. Places like the Hanging Church of Cairo and the Cairo Citadel also feature in many of our tours. If you tour included 2 or 3 days in Cairo then you are also likely to visit the Step Pyramid of Pharaoh Djoser, as well as Memphis, the ancient capital of the Old Kingdom.

Nile River cruises run between Aswan and Luxor, with fantastic sightseeing in Aswan, Kom Ombo, Edfu and Luxor. Some of the most notable attractions that feature in nearly all cruises include places like Philae Temple; Kom Ombo Temple and Edfu Temple. In Luxor we visit several more extraordinary sites, including Valley of the Kings; Hatshepsut Temple; Luxor Temple and Karnak Temple.

Several other historical monuments may also be included in your tour itinerary, depending on which one of our Egypt, Jordan tours from Australia you opt for. In Jordan, you will generally visit fewer attractions than you will in Egypt, but those that you do visit are no less amazing. The Lost City of Petra is in itself more than enough reason to visit Jordan. It must surely be one of the world’s most magnificent archeological discoveries. An entire city carved out of the sides of a long and deep rock gorge, Petra is well and truly beyond words.

What Is Included in Our Egypt, Jordan tours from Australia?

Our Egypt and Jordan tours from Australia include admission fees/tickets for all sites and attractions that are mentioned in the various itineraries. All accommodation is included, along with all meals listed in our itineraries. This typically includes all breakfast meals at the various hotels; all meals during Nile cruises, and any other meals that are specifically mentioned in our itineraries.

Our tours also include clean, comfortable, and modern air-conditioned transport during tours and transfers. If your chosen tour includes a Nile cruise, domestic flight tickets to and from Cairo and Aswan/Luxor are also included in the price. When you travel with us, you will also always be met by one of our tour representatives when you arrive at airports. Last but not least, tour include the services of professional guides at all attractions listed in our itineraries.

What Is Not Included in Our Egypt, Jordan tours from Australia?

While every effort has been made to ensure that our tours are as inclusive as possible, there are certain things which we are not able to include. Some examples would be admission tickets for certain premium sites/attractions such at Tutankhamen’s tomb in the Valley of the Kings in Luxor. Only a certain number of visitors are allowed in certain sites on any given day. In order to prevent ticket hoarding, visitors are required to purchase tickets in person at the sites.

We also do not include tickets for the Mummies Room at the Egyptian Museum in Cairo. We are aware that some people may see the viewing of mummies offensive, so we have left this to be optional. Our Egypt, Jordan tours from Australia also don’t include things like a tipping kitty and/or personal spending money. The cost of entry visas and international travel/airfare are also not included in our prices.

Passport and Visa Requirements

The following advice is based on the assumption that you will be traveling to Egypt and Jordan on an Australian passport. If that is indeed the case, you really have nothing to worry about. For both Egypt and Jordan, you will need to have a minimum of 6 months validity remaining on your passport as from your intended date of departure from each country.

Entry visas for both countries can be obtained via their respective embassies or consular offices in Australia. Alternatively, people traveling on Australian passports can also obtain a Visa on Arrival in both Egypt and Jordan.

Egypt Passport and Entry Visa Requirements

Everyone needs a valid passport and a visa in order to enter Egypt. Fortunately, for Australians, obtaining a tourist visa for Egypt couldn’t be any easier than it is.

For Australian passport holders, there are three ways you can obtain your Egypt tourist visa:

  • Apply for a visa at your nearest Egyptian embassy or consular office.
  • Obtain a visa-on-arrival at Cairo International Airport or any other international airport in Egypt.
  • Apply for your visa online via the official Egypt e-Visa Portal .

The vast majority of people who book Egypt tours from Australia choose to get a visa-on-arrival when they land in Egypt. However, the e-Visa option will almost certainly become a more popular option as more people become aware of it.

In order to apply for an e-Visa, you first need to set up an account on the official Egypt e-Visa portal. Once you have created your account, choose which visa you want and then simply follow the instructions which are very straight forward.

Once you submit your application and you have paid the visa fee via your credit card or debit card, your application will be processed. Once it has been approved you will be able to log into your account where you visa will now be available for downloading and printing. When you arrive in Egypt, simply hand your printed visa to one of the immigration officials who will then stamp your passport.

Under certain circumstances, your chosen tour operator may be able to obtain your entry visa for you. For example, we provide this service with some of our luxury Egypt tours from Australia.

Egypt Holidays from Australia and Covid-19 Restrictions

At the time of writing, fully vaccinated Australians faced no Covid-19 travel restrictions in Egypt, providing their most recent vaccine was received more than 14 days prior to arriving in the country.

Egypt recognizes the following vaccines:

  • AstraZeneca (Vaxzevria)
  • Moderna (Spikevax)
  • Pfizer-BioNTech (Comirnaty)

Unvaccinated Australians were required to show proof of a negative Covid-19 test, and the test must have been done within 72 hours of arriving in the country.

Vaccines to travel to Egypt from Australia

You can enjoy Egypt tours from Australia without getting any particular vaccines, although there are some which are recommended. These are:

  • Hepatitis A – Hepatitis A is spread by eating contaminated food and/or drinking contaminated water in Egypt.
  • Typhoid – Typhoid can also be caught through contaminated food or water. A Typhoid vaccine is especially recommended if you plan on visiting rural parts of the country, or if you are going to be staying with friends or family in Egypt.
  • Rabies – Rabies is present in Egypt, so getting vaccinated against this disease is recommended but not essential, especially if you are only going to be visiting the country’s major cities.

Best Time to Visit Egypt

The best time to travel to Egypt from Australia really depends on your personal travel style and your budget. December and January represent the peak of the high season which runs from October to April. These are the best months in terms of the weather. However, everything costs more, including hotel accommodation, Nile River cruises, and of course, Egypt tour packages.

Visiting Egypt during the low season, which runs from May to September, costs less, but it can be very warm, and especially during June, July and August. If you are accustomed to very warm weather, as many Australians are, there is no reason why you can’t enjoy Egypt tours from Australia during Egypt’s low season. You will also encounter less tourists than you would if you were to visit, let’s say, in December or January.

Why Visit Egypt

Egypt is famous for its towering Pyramids of Giza, its many rock-hewn ancient tombs, and its many ancient temples, but there is so much more to Egypt than only ancient relics. Not many people are going to book Egypt holiday packages from Australia only to see the Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx on the outskirts of Cairo, Egypt’s vibrant capital city.

Our most popular Egypt holiday packages from Australia are our Cairo and Nile cruise packages, some of which also include a few days on the Red Sea coast at places like Sharm el Sheikh and/or Hurghada.

A lot of people also visit Egypt to experience its rich culture and its cuisine, while at the same time visiting its legendary ancient treasures that have been left behind by one of the most advanced ancient civilizations.

Lots of people also book Egypt tour from Australia so that they can experience the magic of a 5-Star sightseeing cruise on the River Nile between Aswan and Luxor, or perhaps a 5-Star cruise on Lake Nasser.

Egypt’s Red Sea coastline is another reason why some people book Egypt holidays from Australia. Egypt has some truly stunning beaches with crystal clear water. Egypt’s Red Sea coastline is also home to literally hundreds of coral reefs that are in turn home to a vast variety of marine species.

Some of the world’s finest dive sites are located along Egypt’s Red Sea coastline, attracting countless SCUBA diving enthusiasts from all around the world. Not surprisingly, there is no shortage of dive shops and dive schools in places like Hurghada and Sharm El Sheikh. If SCUBA diving or snorkeling is your thing, you really need to add Egypt’s Red Sea coast to your bucket list.

A lot of people also book Egypt tours from Australia simply because they want an affordable and wonderfully relaxing vacation near the beach at one of Egypt’s delightful resort towns. It really takes a lot to beat a professionally crafted Nile cruise & Hurghada holiday or a Nile cruise and Sharm El Sheikh Holiday.

Helpful Tips for Traveling to Egypt

While Egypt is a very tourist-friendly country to visit and explore, a little bit of insight can go a long way in helping you to avoid unnecessary problems.

Let’s take a look at a few things which can make travel to Egypt from Australia that much more hassle-free:

Quenching your Thirst

Egypt is a warm/hot country, where people, including tourists, drink plenty of water. No matter how thirsty you are, never drink tap water. Stick to bottled water only. Bottled water is cheap and plentiful in Egypt.

Likewise, it’s best to only buy and consume beverages that come in sealed containers. This is not to say you can’t enjoy a cup of tea or coffee, or a glass of juice with ice, but if you do, buy from places that are serving a lot of locals.

Dining and Avoiding Mummy Tummy

As the saying goes: when in Rome, do as the Romans do. Well, when in Egypt, do as the Egyptians do, at least when it comes to eating street food or dining at small roadside restaurants. Many visitors end up with an upset stomach (mummy tummy) soon after they arrive in Cairo.

It would be a shame to visit Egypt and never try traditional food and snacks sold in the country’s bazaars, but one should exercise a bit of caution. Instead of avoiding street vendors and small restaurants altogether, simply buy what you want from vendors and/or restaurant that are serving lots of locals.

Tipping - Not Mandatory, but Always Appreciated

In larger restaurants, a service fee is automatically added to your bill. However, this money goes to the restaurant owner rather than to the waiters or waitresses, many of whom earn very low wages. Tipping them with a few Egyptian pounds for good service can really make a big difference.

Many waiters and waitresses are forced to rely on tips to supplement their salaries. The same applies to some service staff at hotels and resorts.

Politics and Religion

Politics and religion are both sensitive topics in Egypt, and we strongly recommend against getting drawn into debates concerning either or both.

Under no circumstances should you insult Islam, or any other religion for that matter.

Most Egyptians are notoriously friendly and tolerant, but when it comes to politics and/or religion, it is all too easy for foreigners to cross the line.

Swimming in the Nile River

While none of our own Egypt tours from Australia include opportunities to swim in the Nile River, some Felucca cruise operators actually encourage swimming in the Nile in areas that are supposedly safe for swimming.

Crocodiles are not the problem. Instead, it is Schistosomiasis that is the concern. This is a disease which is carried by a parasite that is present in many bodies of fresh water in Africa.

A lot of people do enjoy a dip in the Nile between Aswan and Luxor, but regardless of what tour operators might tell you, there is a risk of contracting Schistosomiasis.

If you have, or if you intend to book one of our Egypt tours from Australia, every hotel you stay in will have a swimming pool. Nearly all Nile cruise ships also have a swimming pool, so there is no need to risk a swim in the Nile River.

Don't Let Sunburn Destroy your Holiday Experience

Whatever you do, don’t underestimate the power of the Egyptian sun. Yes, many Australians are accustomed to plenty of sun, but still, many underestimate the risk of serious sunburn in Egypt, especially during the warmer summer months.

Most of Egypt’s archaeological sites, such as the Giza Pyramids, provide very little in the way of shade. We highly recommend packing in some good quality sunscreen lotion, a wide-brimmed hat, and a good pair of sunglasses.

Save Money with Small Group Tours to Egypt from Australia

Small group tours to Egypt from Australia provide travelers with an excellent opportunity to save some money, and still get to see the wonders of Ancient Egypt. Group tours cost less than private tours because tour operators can make group reservations at hotels and on the Nile River cruises. As a group, the cost of expert guides is shared, as is the cost of transport. These savings can then be passed on to clients.

Our Egypt small group tours are limited to a maximum of 12 or 25 persons. Group tours are a great option for people on a tight budget and/or people who just prefer traveling in a group.

Luxury Egypt Tours from Australia

If you have a bit of cash to spare and you want your trip through Ancient Egypt to be even more memorable than ever, consider booking a luxury tour.

Luxury tours will typically include outstanding hotel accommodation, one of the best Nile cruise packages, private expert guides and personal drivers, and sometimes even your entry visa for Egypt. Providing you book through a reputable tour operator, your trip to Egypt should be totally flawless in every aspect.

10 Must-See Places to Visit

10 archaeological treasures which every Australian visitor should try to see while they are in Egypt

1. Giza Pyramids & Sphinx, Cairo

The view of three pyramids and a giant Sphinx in the distance is one of the most iconic sights in the world. The Giza Pyramids are Egypt’s most visited attraction. They are far from being the oldest, but they are certainly the most famous pyramids in Egypt. Other ancient civilizations also built pyramids, but it is the Giza Pyramids that captivated the imagination of the world.

While it is now illegal to climb any of the pyramids, it is possible to go inside the pyramids providing you purchase the necessary tickets which are available at the site.

Giza Pyramids

2. Museum of Egyptian Antiquities, Cairo

Located in the heart of Cairo, Egypt’s bustling capital city, the Egyptian Museum showcases more than 5,000 years of fascinating history. With more than 100,000 artifacts on display, a visit to this world famous museum is a definite must for anyone and everyone who visits Cairo. Expect to spend at least an hour or two at the museum

While many of the museum’s original artifacts have recently been relocated to the new Grand Egyptian Museum at Giza, there is still so much to see at the museum, including many artifacts which are now on display for the very first time.

3. Abu Simbel Temples, Abu Simbel

Located near the modern-day city of Abu Simbel, are two enormous rock-hewn temples that were commissioned by Pharaoh Ramses II. One was constructed for him and one for his beloved wife, Queen Nefertari. These two breathtaking temples are Egypt’s second-most instantly recognizable site. The temples were built in honor of multiple gods, and in honor of Ramses himself who believed he too would become a god in the afterlife.

Unfortunately, the drive from Aswan to Abu Simbel takes approximately 3.5 to 4 hours in each direction. However, if you don’t mind the drive, we cannot recommend the Abu Simbel Temples highly enough.

Abu Simbel Temples

4. Valley of the Kings, Luxor

The Valley of Kings is an ancient royal necropolis located near the modern day city of Luxor in Upper Egypt. The site is home to more than 60 ancient tombs, including the tomb of Pharaoh Ramses VI and the tomb of King Tutankhamun. Several of the tombs are open to visitors, but for some of them, visitors are required to purchase tickets in person at the site.

At the time of writing, tour operators were not allowed to purchase these “special” tickets ahead of time on behalf of their clients. Visitors hoping to see inside Tutankhamun’s tomb should get to the site as early as possible, especially during the high season when there are lots of tourists about.

5. Karnak Temple Complex, Luxor

Karnak Temple is located in the ancient city of Thebes on the east bank of the Nile River near modern day Luxor. Luxor is one of the best Egyptian cities in terms of ancient attractions. Karnak is a sprawling complex which grew over a period of more than 2,000 years. Best described as being an ancient city of temples, it is the second-most visited ancient site in Egypt.

While mostly only ruins remain, there is still so much to see at this site. You will see Karnak Temple featured in almost all of our Egypt Tours from Australia that include a Nile River cruise. It really is one of the most famous sights in Egypt.

Karnak Temple

6. Hatshepsut Temple, Luxor

Also located on the west bank of the Nile River at Thebes, the mortuary temple of Queen Hatshepsut is featured in nearly all Nile River cruise itineraries. It is also featured in most Luxor tour packages and in most of our own Egypt tours from Australia. This huge terraced temple was commissioned by Queen Hatshepsut, Ancient Egypt’s only true Egyptian female ruler.

Hatshepsut’s mortuary temple is believed to be one of the most majestic temples ever built by the Ancient Egyptians. As with the other sites already mentioned, Hatshepsut Temple is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and is considered one of Egypt’s “Incomparable Ancient Egyptian Monuments.”

7. Luxor Temple, Luxor

Also located on the east bank of the Nile River, just a stone throw away from Karnak Temple, Luxor Temple is absolutely breathtaking. In fact, Luxor Temple is considered to be one of the world’s most breathtaking open-air museums. These days, visitors can walk from Karnak Temple to Luxor Temple via the recently re-opened Avenue of the Sphinxes.

While most of our Egypt tours from Australia include a guided tour to Luxor Temple, we also highly recommend visiting the site in the evening for a spectacular professionally narrated Sound and Lights Show, during which guests learn all about the temple’s ancient history.

Egypt holiday packages from Australia - Luxor Temple at night

8. Temple of Horus, Edfu

Also known as Edfu Temple, this is Egypt’s most well-preserved ancient cult temple. After the Egyptians, the Romans seized the temple but eventually abandoned it. As the years passed, the entire temple became buried beneath the desert sands. Not surprisingly, you will find Edfu Temple featured in nearly all good Nile cruise itineraries.

Edfu itself is a charming town. If you visit Edfu during a Nile cruise, you may also be able to visit the temple by way of a horse-drawn carriage that will take through the old town on your way to the temple with its two gigantic statues of Horus.

9. Kom Ombo Temple, Kom Ombo

Kom Ombo Temple is located near the modern-day town of the same name. It is one of Egypt’s most unique ancient temples because it is essentially two temples in one. One is like a mirror image of the other. The complex was dedicated to two different gods: Sobek the crocodile god and Horus the falcon headed god.

Because the Egyptians did not want to cause offense to either of the gods, both halves of the temple were made identical. Kom Ombo Temple is also featured in nearly all good Nile cruise itineraries.

Luxury Egypt tours from Australia - Temple of Kom Ombo

10. Philae Temple, Aswan

Philae Temple is located near to the modern-day city of Aswan. The temple is remarkably well-preserved. It is also believed to be the last true Egyptian cult temple built by the ancient Egyptians. The entire complex was relocated in entirety to its current location in order to save it from the flooding of Lake Nasser when the Aswan High Dam was built.

Philae Temple was dedicated to two goddesses, Hathor and Isis, and was originally located on a small and extremely sacred island in the Nile River. This is another ancient monument that features in many of our Egypt tours from Australia.

Best time to visit egypt.

Egypt is blessed with lots of sunshine and very little rain. Generally, the hottest months are June to August, and the coolest month is January. Rainfall is negligible, except on the coast, with rain usually occurring during the winter months (December to March).

During the summer months (from June to August), daily temperatures can reach 40 degrees Celsius - perfect for snorkelling and soaking up the sun on the beaches of Sinai, but can prove challenging for some in the crowded streets and souqs of Cairo.

Choose to escape the crowds by travelling from March to May or September to November when the weather is milder, and there's the opportunity to experience Egypt during Ramadan and the celebrations of Eid (which marks the breaking of the fast). If you are planning to travel during Ramadan, it's important to consider that many restaurants and shops will either be closed or operating on reduced hours.

Culture and customs

Life in Egypt has been in a state of flux since the 2011 revolution. Many of the issues that motivated so many to take to the streets in protest continue to be points of contention, but Egyptians remain hopeful, relying on religion, family and humour to get them through, like they have for thousands of years. A strong sense of community binds people across the country. Families and communities support each other and there is a prevailing sense that everyone is in it together. For all these reasons, most express great pride in being Egyptian, despite their nation’s recent turmoil.

As a largely Muslim country (about 90% of the population is Muslim while most of the remaining 10% identify as Coptic Christian), Islam permeates daily activities. Life revolves around the five daily prayers and everything is closed on Friday, the Muslim holy day. A wide array of cultural norms, including how people dress and interact with the opposite sex, are influenced by religion. Women are largely defined by their role as a mother and matron of the house, whereas men are expected to be the provider.

Many Egyptians consider their country the gateway between the West and the rest of the Arab world, and take pride in their ability to mix tradition with modern influences. This mixing is most apparent in major cities, such as Cairo and Alexandria, where American fast-food chains can be found next to traditional cafes, secular attitudes are more common, and pop music rings through city streets.

Food and drink

With fragrant spices, fresh fruit and vegetables, and delicious sweets on offer, culinary adventures in Egypt are guaranteed. On many Intrepid trips you'll be given the opportunity to dine with a local family – this offers a great chance to see how meals are prepared and learn more about the ingredients.

Foods to try in Egypt

1. Hamam mahshi

A north African delicacy, hamam – roasted pigeon stuffed with cracked wheat and rice – can be found on the menu of most traditional Egyptian restaurants. You may need a few to fill up though, as they don’t contain a lot of meat. And be careful of all the tiny bones.

2. Ta'ameya (falafel)

Crunchy on the outside, moist on the inside, these deep-fried balls of spiced fava beans are a Middle Eastern vegetarian staple. Usually served in a pita with salad, pickles and sesame-based tahina - buy it at a street stall for a quick, cheap meal.

Shops specializing in this popular ‘poor man’s dish’ can be found throughout Cairo. A hearty mix of rice, macaroni and lentils, chickpeas and fried onions, koshary is topped with a tomato-vinegar sauce.

4. Ful medames

Don't leave Egypt without trying the classic dish of ful medames, which can be traced back to pharaonic times. Consisting of slow-cooked fava beans, served with olive oil, parsley, garlic and lemon juice - add some spice by seasoning with chilli paste and eat with bread.

5. Pastries

Delicious, sweet pastries are found in restaurants, markets and cafes in Egypt. Never was there a better time to live by the adage ‘Life is short, eat dessert first’.

Egypt is a mostly Muslim country, and any consumption of alcohol here is relatively low-key. There are many fantastic alternatives. Juice stands are common on main streets offering freshly squeezed banana, guava, or mango juice. Karkadai is a chilled, crimson drink brewed from hibiscus leaves (served hot in the winter). And tea (or shai) is the beverage of choice for most Egyptians, which is sipped throughout the day and with meals.

Geography and environment

Located in the north-east corner of Africa, Egypt shares its borders with Israel and the Palestinian Territories, Libya and Sudan, as well as the Mediterranean Sea to the north and the Red Sea to the east. The two seas are connected by the man-made Suez Canal.

The remote triangle-shaped peninsula is largely characterised by limestone and desert, but also has a vibrant coral reef along the Red Sea coastline. Hot, dry desert covers most of the country’s terrain, with the Western Desert occupying much of the west, and the Arabian (or Eastern) Desert stretching the length of the eastern coast. These two regions are dissected by the Nile River, which runs the length of the country, emptying into the Mediterranean Sea. The Nile Valley, a narrow fertile band extending from the river, is the country’s only fertile land and where 98% of the population lives.

History and government

Recent history.

Napoleon Bonaparte, the infamous pint-sized French leader, invaded Egypt in 1798, seeking to set up a French colony. However, not long after, the French were repelled, and Egypt became a part of the Ottoman Empire once again.

From 1882, the British Army occupied Egypt to protect the Suez Canal. Muhammad Ali officially ruled from the early 1800s, and his family and successors continued to rule for decades (alongside and during British occupation) until overthrown by a military coup in 1952.

During World War II, Egypt became a crucial element in Britain's defence. The Italian Army tried to advance into Egypt in 1940 but was stopped by the British Army at Mersa Matruh. Egypt continued to serve as a vital base for British troops during World War II and despite the disruption, Egypt's shopkeepers and retail trade benefitted from the thousands of Allied troops staying in Egypt.

In 1953, Egypt was officially declared a republic and a year later, Colonel Nasser was declared Prime Minister, then President. In 1979, after decades of confrontation with neighbouring Israel, the historic Egypt-Israel Peace Treaty was signed. This agreement made Egypt the first Arab country to officially recognise Israel as a country - a significant step in the peace process. More recently, in February 2011, large scale protests and mass demonstrations resulted in the removal of President Mubarak after decades of autocratic rule.

Early history

Ancient Egypt has been the focus of much fascination, investigation, speculation and intrigue. It's hard to escape the education system without having studied Ancient Egypt in some way. Drawn in by the mighty pyramids, mysterious hieroglyphics, distinct burial rituals and animal-headed gods - scholars, students, historians and travellers are all amazed by this civilisation which has endured cycles of dynastic rule, invasion and natural disasters.

Through key archaeological finds, historians have been able to unravel some of the mysteries of this great land. What is known is that the daily life of the average Egyptian usually involved working in agriculture with the waters of the Nile providing fertile ground for planting of crops. Egyptians usually lived in modest homes with children and domestic pets. Professions were usually inherited - so if your father was a farmer, then so were you.

While most Egyptians led simple lives, dynasties of Pharaohs led lavish lifestyles, with the most well-known being Ramses II, Hatshepsut, Akhenaten, Tutankhamun and Cleopatra. Huge monuments, imposing pyramids, golden artefacts and detailed paintings all hold details about pharaonic rule and succession, as well as commonly held beliefs about religion and the afterlife.

Spanning centuries and full of drama worthy of a soap opera, the epic history of Ancient Egypt is complex and we suggest you read about it before visiting.

Top 10 ancient wonders of Egypt

1. grand designs.

The original grand design - monumental and magnificent - the Pyramids of Giza are an impressive achievement in ancient engineering. Towering above the desert sands and standing proudly for centuries, the first glimpse of these stunning structures will render visitors breathless.

2. Stony enigma

Be captivated by the mysterious aura of the Great Sphinx of Giza. This monolithic mythical beast possesses a lion’s body and a human head - and has sat quietly in the desert sands for eons. Gaze at the Sphinx and try to work out the riddle of its existence.

3. Mighty Nile River

No trip to Egypt is complete without visiting the Nile River - the life force of Egypt that has flowed for centuries. A provider of irrigation, an essential travel route, home to hippos and crocodiles, and now a source of leisure for locals and travellers alike, the Nile is an aquatic link to Egypt’s ancient heritage.

4. Terrific temples

Discover an enormous open-air museum like no other. The awe-inspiring Temples of Karnak are filled with stately statues, immense columns and gigantic gateways. Explore this intriguing site and be left in no doubt about the brilliance of the ancient Egyptian civilisation.

5. Holy mountains

Embark on a trek to the top of Mt Sinai and witness an incredible golden sunrise to remember. A place of worship for many faiths, a pilgrimage to Mt Sinai reveals stunning scenery, an ancient monastery and historic chapels. An iconic highlight of Egypt for believers and non-believers alike, Mt Sinai is not to be missed.

6. Double happiness

Located in the Nile Valley, the unique Temple of Kom Ombo is a ‘double temple’ and a rare archaeological find. Dedicated to two gods, a visit here is a true highlight of an Egyptian escapade. Marvel at the well-preserved wall reliefs, try to decipher the hieroglyphics and honour the craftsmen who created this wonder.

7. Museum magic

Step into a dazzling world of antiquity at the Egyptian Museum. Be amazed by the glittering treasures recovered from King Tutankhamun’s tomb – with jewellery, furniture, chariots and that famous gold funerary mask, this pharaoh was certainly prepared for the afterlife.

8. Roman ruins

The Roman ruins of Kom el-Dikka in Alexandria may not be the biggest, but they are certainly among the best-preserved in Egypt, if not the world. Soak up the atmosphere of the Roman amphitheatre and imagine it in all its glory - packed with 800 spectators ready for action.

9. Colossal characters

Near the modern city of Luxor stand the imposing Colossi of Memnon. These massive stone statues of Amenhotep III, while badly damaged, still maintain an unmistakable air of authority. Stand below them and be dwarfed by the scale of these tremendous figures.

10. The ancient heart of Cairo

Wander the cobbled streets of Islamic Cairo and uncover the ancient heart of this chaotic city. Admire mosques, palaces and houses, and peruse the goods on offer at one of the world’s oldest bazaars. Dating back to medieval times, the Khan al-Khalili bazaar is where people have traded goods for centuries.

Souqs – or open-air bazaars – are both the best place to shop in Egypt and attractions in their own right. The biggest and most famous souq is the 500-year-old Khan El Khalili Bazaar in Cairo. Within the maze of narrow streets and laneways lie stalls selling jewellery, glass, copper, spices and artisan goods, along with more standard tourist fare. Quality can vary greatly so spend some time shopping around.

Like many markets around the world, bargaining is the norm, but Egyptians take it to another level. Expect to be offered tea (it can take that long) and for elaborate theatrics from the seller. While bazaars in Cairo tend to sell everything, visit Aswan’s bazaar for spices, incense and basketwork, and Luxor for cheaply priced alabaster figurines and vases. It's also a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country.

Things to buy in Egypt

You’ll often see spices piled high in bazaars. In addition to making a great photo for Instagram, they’re often a good buy as long as you keep a couple of things in mind. Always buy whole spices rather than ground to ensure freshness and skip the ‘saffron’ – it’s actually safflower and tastes like dust.

2. Glassware

Hand-blown Muski glass, recognizable by its air bubbles, comes in brilliant shades of blue and green and purple, and has been made in Egypt since medieval times. Be careful with this purchase though as it’s extremely fragile.

3. Cartouche

A kind of nameplate written in hieroglyphics. Most gold or silver shops sell these and many can customise them by engraving your name.

Festivals and events

Eid al-fitr.

After fasting for an entire month, Muslims celebrate the end of Ramadan with Eid al-Fitr, or ‘Feast of Breaking the Fast’. For three days, starting on the first day of the tenth month of the lunar calendar, people celebrate with feasts, family and festivals. Look for vendors selling kahk cookies (nut-filled cookies covered in powdered sugar) while taking in the festivities, a tasty treat synonymous with Eid for many locals.

Eid al-Adha

Arguably the most important holiday in Egypt, the ‘Feast of Sacrifice’ is not one for vegetarians and vegans. About 70 days after Eid al-Fitr, sheep and goats are slaughtered (often in the middle of the street) for a mighty feast.

Sham el-Nessim

Each year on March 21st, Egyptians celebrate the coming of spring by spending the day outdoors. Join the locals for this ancient holiday by packing a picnic and heading to a park or public garden.

Abu Simbel Sun Festival

As if the two temples dedicated to Ramses II and Queen Nefertari weren’t impressive enough, they were constructed in such a way that twice a year, the sun’s rays reach its innermost chambers and illuminate three stone gods that reside within, while leaving Ptah (god of the underworld) in the dark. And those days just happen to be Ramses’s birthday (October 21) and coronation (February 21). Coincidence? We think not.

What to wear in Egypt

Summer temperatures can get very high, so light fabrics like linen, cotton and athletic gear made to take the heat are best. If you’re travelling outside of winter, don’t underestimate the cool change that can come in the evenings, especially if you’re spending the night in the desert or on a Nile cruise. Avoid packing anything in white – desert dust will quickly turn those light-coloured clothes a not-so-delightful shade of brown.

Where will I stay in Egypt?

Travelling with Intrepid is a little bit different. We endeavour to provide travellers with an authentic experience to remember, so we try to keep accommodation as unique and traditional as possible.

These are some of the types of accomodations you will stay in:

Felucca Glide down the Nile on a traditional Egyptian felucca; sleep on deck under the stars as the sun slides away for the day - a must-do experience while in Egypt. Homestay

Desert camp Travel deep into the White Desert to camp under the stars amid surreal scenery. This is a rare chance to experience the remote wonder and isolation of the Egyptian desert.

Beach hut With calming Red Sea views and fresh sea breezes, this rustic breach abode is all about life’s simple pleasures.

How will I travel around Egypt?

Intrepid believes half the fun of experiencing a new country is getting there, and getting around once there! Where possible, Intrepid uses local transport options and traditional modes of transport - which usually carry less of an environmental impact, support small local operators and are heaps more fun.

How do I stay safe and healthy while travelling?

River Nile Cruise – The Extravagant Wonder of Karnak and Luxor Temples

Wake the next morning to be privately transferred to Cairo Airport for your short flight to Luxor and travel straight to Luxor Temple. Luxor baffles even the most worldly of travelers as seeing such ancient heritage stand in such a pristine state of conservation is hard to comprehend. Your mind will circle with questions on how these tombs and temples were built on such an immense scale? Palatial columns rise skyward and dwarf all of those who wander across the imposing temple floors. Sculpted figures guard entrances ten meters high, their eyes cast with indecipherable emotion. Footsteps will echo and bounce across the walls before evaporating into the desert sky.

Your first glimpse will be forever memorable as the scale of the temple is experienced in all of its primitive glory. As you admire the hieroglyphs and soak up the murals, you will realize that this is just the start of your journey through Egypt’s dynasties. Like each day on this itinerary, every tour is private, and your Egyptologist guide will tailor the speed and information to your interests. There is almost too much to see around Luxor, and it will be easy to be overwhelmed by temple after temple, tomb after tomb. Your guide will individualize your discovery and focus your time on the most exquisite and interesting.

You will continue down the old Avenue of Sphinxes to the temple complex of Karnak, and then the scale will multiply. The largest of all of Egypt’s temples, the scale can only be comprehended when you stand in the main temple courtyard. You can take your time and allow the silence to take over as impressions of stone imprint themselves. Your guide will unravel the details and over the course of the day, will answer those questions you had when you landed in Luxor earlier in the day. There will be time to visit the Luxor Museum should you wish, as you travel the banks of the River Nile.

River Nile Cruise – Exploring the Valley of the Kings

On Luxor’s opposite bank lie the tombs of the pharaohs, the grand structures built to protect them in a future life. The rulers of Ancient Egypt’s 18th dynasty were mummified and left in the Valley of the Kings and Valley of the Queens, where exquisite details adorn the walls and stories are told in strange images. You will visit four of the tombs, and your guide will explain the potential options. King Tutankhamen’s is usually seen as unmissable, predominantly for its fame. King Ramesses VI’s should also be seen for its beauty and size.

Down in the musty tombs, you can inspect the walls of detail as your guide will point out what has been left behind after over 3,000 years. An ethereal atmosphere hangs in the air and will remind you that these were places of rest. There will be a beautiful moment as you ascend the steps and return to the tomb entrance and admire the endless vista over the desert. After a stop for lunch, you will be guided through the Valley of the Queens and take time in the Mortuary Temple of Queen Hatshepsut. Of all Egypt’s ancient monuments, perhaps none capture the era’s stylistic innovation as well as this one. Enjoy your time cruising away from Luxor in the evening.

River Nile Cruise – Cruising Past the Dazzling Temples

Elegant and exceptionally appointed, the cruise ship is one of the Nile’s premier vessels. Opulent views come from your deluxe cabin, in the restaurants, and along the sun decks revealing the tranquility of the Nile and the Sahara beyond. Your boat is spacious and carefully designed to maximize the panoramas while always providing shade. Pass the forgotten villages, the green oases that cling to the sand and the remarkable temples that rise graciously from the desert. Edfu and Kom Ombo Temples have inspiring stories that are written in the symbols and sculptures that encircle them. Your private guide will narrate the tales of the crocodile god and belligerent hippos. These stops will provide the interlude to a very relaxed day of cruising that will immerse you in the gentle rhythm of the desert.

River Nile Cruise – Aswan’s Remarkable Highlights

The sunrise over the River Nile is a striking sight as bands of color linger on the horizon with golden tones shimmering off of the water. As with each morning on the cruise ship, your sumptuous breakfast will be spent with beautiful views as you cruise into Aswan to spend the day exploring a remarkable collection of highlights. Philae Temple, Aswan Dam, the staggering granite slab of the Unfinished Obelisk will pass your view as you begin to appreciate how each of Egypt’s sights has its own ambiance and style.

After a relaxed lunch, you will spend your afternoon on a traditional felucca sailboat as wind power will take you between the exotic green islands and flourishing oases. The boat is a vessel of yesteryear, a serene immersion in the distinctive mood of Aswan as it harmoniously blends Saharan desert styles with Arabic innovation and the charms of tradition. Aswan is Egypt’s most memorable town as the markets are alive with color while locals spend entire afternoons on cafe terraces, and there is a real sense of a world frozen in time. Included in the felucca cruise is a stop at a tiny Nubian village, where you can transfer to a camel and ride into the desert at sunset before settling into your relaxing accommodation combining history with exceptional attention to luxurious detail.

Cairo – Day Trip to Abu Simbel by Air

Abu Simbel is worth the journey. Rescued from the flooding of the Aswan Dam and expertly reconstructed, the Abu Simbel temples are very different to everything you will have previously seen in Luxor. It will be the details that mesmerize; the glance in the eye of sculptures that guard the entrance, the gold leaf shimmering, intricate hieroglyphs found along a hallway of seemingly endless statues. After a relaxed morning, you will fly over the desert to Abu Simbel for a private tour of these astonishing monuments. After that, continue to Cairo and return for the night to the Marriott Mena House Hotel, a place of phenomenal old-world grandeur. Ascend to the roof for an exceptional view of the Pyramids of Giza above the iconic palm trees in the foreground.

Cairo – The Epic Pyramids

For many visitors, the Pyramids of Giza are Ancient Egypt, the single icon that represents the innovation and expression of the world’s first great civilization. Your private guide will take you into the World Heritage Site at sunrise, before the crowds descend, to give you plenty of time to soak up their scale and listen to the enveloping silence. Explore the interior of one of the temples, visit the famous viewpoints, gaze up at the protective Sphinx of Giza, and understand why photos simply do not do justice to these monuments. By mid to late morning, you will be back at Mena House Hotel for a hearty brunch and some relaxed hours spent on the roof. Your private afternoon tour will reveal the oldest of the pyramids, the crumbling and weathered stepped pyramids of Saqqara. While not as visually impressive, these pyramids are a great insight into the construction and design of the icons.

Cairo – Hidden Charms in the Egyptian Museum and Coptic Cairo

Wander through the Egyptian Museum of Antiquities and an endearing chaos will greet you at every angle. Golden fragments are hidden amongst the dust with seemingly priceless artifacts lumped in piles.  It will feel as though you are opening an ancient treasure chest to search through endless gems to find one that ultimately stands out. It can be very confusing, and it could take months to see it all, but with your private guide, you can sidestep straight to the most evocative treasures, including the sparkling wonders excavated from King Tutankhamen’s Tomb. The museum first opened in 1902 and houses approximately 120,000 artifacts.  After lunch, you can spend the afternoon wandering through the cobbled streets of Coptic Cairo, where churches date to the 5th century AD. The vibrant markets are ideal places to purchase souvenirs while aromas of anise, coriander, and black pepper drift through the narrow lanes.

Petra – Sunset Over the Ancient Sandstone City Then Petra by Candlelight

Fly from Cairo to Amman where you will notice the change in atmosphere as the bustle of one capital fades to the tranquility of another. You will be greeted at the airport, and it will be a three-hour drive out to Petra, with a couple of potential stops on route dependent on your mood. Relax at the five-star Movenpick Petra and let the heat of the afternoon slip away before you enter the mesmeric sandstone city. The hotel combines the beauty and flair of natural stone, intricate handcrafted wood, and Middle Eastern fabrics for a collection of sensational textures accentuating the ambiance around one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. The Arabic-style courtyard provides a soothing window into the past and a selection of the luxurious rooms offer enchanting views over the Great Rift Valley. The comforts of the modern rooms contrast the antique ambiance of the ancient city located across the street from the hotel.

Late afternoon will cast a seductive glow onto the rock as swirls of rustic red and radiant orange bounce back off of the canyon walls. Tomorrow you will explore the different buildings to admire their contrasts, but today’s sunset will be about admiring the city from a raised vantage point and watching the subtle changes as dusk takes hold. Your private guide will lead you towards the famous entrance of Petra for the evening tour. You will descend slowly as the canyon narrows, and you approach Petra’s ancient, hidden entrance.

Take a few more steps, and a whole world will open as buildings are carved into red cliffs and sculptures dominate the sandstone. With candlelight as your guide, you will make out the city avenues as they wind around the cliffs and lead to majestic layers of rock. Silence reigns, and you will hear every footstep. Hold your light out and reveal a new set of detail, which then disappears as you walk on. Exploring Petra at candlelight has an almost transcendent element, one that slowly evokes the atmosphere of this city’s distant origins.

Dead Sea – Exploring the Exceptional Details of Petra

Petra looks different in the morning light as it is both inviting and inquisitive to showcase a scale that was impossible to grasp yesterday evening. This sandstone city is not merely a cluster of photogenic buildings, but a sprawling expanse of caves, tombs, Roman pillars, polished granite and sculpted icons. After breakfast, your private guide will explain the potential route options. You can only get around the city by foot, or by donkey. The area close to Petra’s narrow canyon entrance has the most famous sights but starting from the opposite side will reveal the city’s most impressive temple. The walk could be less than an hour, uncovering a few exceptional icons or you could also spend a whole day and only see half the city, such is its enormity and vivid detail. Take as long as you like because, like all good cities, the real beauty comes when you head off the beaten track. From Petra, you will be transferred to the Dead Sea, a two-hour journey that will culminate in the peaceful views overlooking the Dead Sea.

Dead Sea – Free Day on the Water

This will be a day at your leisure, and you can begin your day gazing over the water from your hotel balcony. Your hotel embodies tranquility with spacious interiors opening out onto the sea breeze for your own secluded piece of the coastline. The Dead Sea is Jordan’s premier coastal escape, even though the salty water is now hemmed in by landmasses. Relax by the shaded pool as drinks are served or take a swim in the Dead Sea to experience the buoyancy of the salt. You will feel something comforting and recognizable about the Dead Sea, yet there is also something endearingly different and exotic.

Amman – Final Historical Highlights and Departure

The journey back to Amman can take two hours with a scenic ride on route to dropping you at the airport for your international departure. But for an evening departure, this final transfer can include many intriguing stops. Spend time at the Roman ruins of Jerash for insight into the blend of Greco-Roman architecture and Arab traditions dating back to the 1st century BC or explore the epic 12th century crusader castle of Kerak, the largest crusader castle in Jordan, before reaching Queen Alia International Airport.

Please note: Some flights may depart the night before.

Day 2 Cairo

This morning, join your group for an introductory briefing where you'll get the chance to meet your fellow travellers.

Later, head out to see some of the world’s most iconic sights – the Pyramids of Giza and the Great Sphinx. Explore these structures that have stood tall for some 4500 years and learn about the ancient history of the monuments. The oldest of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, and the only one to remain largely intact, the pyramids are a sight to behold.

Afterwards, make your way to the Egyptian Museum, home to one of the world's great collections of antiquities. Wander the treasure-filled halls of the museum, a highlight of which is the masses of gleaming artefacts recovered from the tomb of Tutankhamun.

Day 3 Cairo El Alamein Alexandria

Today we'll drive to the port city of Alexandria, along what is known as the ‘desert road’.

Enroute, we'll visit the Commonwealth War Graves of El Alamein . It is here that two extended battles were fought during World War II. The first began on July 1, 1942, and lasted for 27 days, ending as a stalemate. After three months of holding back the enemy, the allies launched a second attack which lasted for 13 days. The importance of El Alamein was highlighted by Winston Churchill, who said: “Before Alamein we never had a victory.”

Afterwards, we'll continue on to Alexandria to check-in to our hotel and enjoy some free time in this seaside city.

Day 4 Alexandria Cairo

Today your guide will take you on a tour of the city, known for its broad beaches and corniche (seafront promenade) dotted with sun loungers and cafes.

Afterwards, prepare to delve into the catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa. Heading underground, you’ll get to view the largest known Roman burial site in Egypt, complete with burial chambers, labyrinth alleyways and entertaining rooms for families coming to visit the dead.

The crypts are 20 metres below street level and date back to the Greco Roman period. What likely started as a small family tomb grew into a large number of graves that could accommodate more than 300 bodies. The tombs are organised around a central spiral staircase that leads down through several levels.

We then drive back to Cairo. On arrival, check into your hotel located close by the airport in preparation for your flight to Aswan in the morning.

Day 5 Cairo Aswan

This morning, take an early flight from Cairo to Aswan.

On arrival in Aswan, you will be transferred to the port where you will board a boat to take you to the Philae Temple complex, home to the Temple of Isis which was rescued from the rising waters of the Nile and relocated on Philae Island in the 1960s. It’s a marvel of decorative pylons featuring some of Egypt’s finest carvings – definitely one of the real gems of Upper Egypt.

Philae Temple is situated on an island just south of Aswan. It was built by the last dynasty of ancient Egypt, the Ptolemaic. The temple is dedicated to Isis - the goddess of healing, magic and birth, her husband Osiris and their son Horus.

Following our visit, we check into our hotel with time to relax before we enjoy sailing the Nile in a traditional wooden boat (felucca) in the afternoon followed by an authentic dinner at one of the Nubian houses.

This evening, enjoy your Inspiring Taste as we experience modern Nubian culture first-hand with a visit to Elephantine Island. On your visit you’ll join a Nubian family for dinner and experience true traditional Nubian hospitality. Here, you will encounter Nubian homes, traditional food and an unforgettable insight into the daily life of a Nubian. This is a rare and memorable experience, giving you the chance to become fully immersed in the local culture.

Day 6 Aswan

Today we set out to explore some of Aswan’s other landmarks. We begin with the unfinished obelisk, the largest known ancient obelisk – more than 3,500 years old – located in an ancient quarry in Aswan.

It was left incomplete and now provides a fascinating look at how these great monuments were constructed.

We'll then continue to the Nubian Museum, which showcases the history, art and culture of the Nubians . This museum enables visitors to understand the complex history of the local area and its people.

Afterwards, we'll visit the Aswan High Dam, which sits behind the mighty Lake Nasser. At the time it was made (the 1960s), it was the largest dam project in the world. The creation of the reservoir necessitated the costly relocation of the ancient Egyptian temple complex of Abu Simbel, which would otherwise have been submerged.

Day 7 Aswan Abu Simbel Aswan Embark on Nile cruise

Today you will awake before sunrise for an early morning start.

Sit back and relax as you drive to the ancient Abu Simbel temples, near the southern Egyptian border. You will have an early arrival into Abu Simbel to view this incredible sight. The complex is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site known as the Nubian Monuments.

The two enormous sandstone structures were built in the 1200s BCE by Ramses II to commemorate himself and his favourite wife Nefertari. The larger temple, dedicated to three major Egyptian deities, features four large statues of Ramses II on its façade, while the smaller temple is dedicated to the goddess of love, Hathor, with statues designed to embody Nefertari.

Set on the banks of the artificial Lake Nasser, the structures were once in danger of being flooded with the construction of the Aswan High Dam but were saved via an extensive project to cut the temples into pieces and move them to higher ground, where they are seen today.

On our return to Aswan the rest of the day is free for you to make your own discoveries.

Later we'll check in to our Nile cruise – our floating home for the next three nights.

Driving Duration: Approximately 8 hour round trip ( with stops along the way)

Please note that as the sailing distance between Aswan and Luxor is approximately 200km, that it is typical for all cruises operated along the Nile to be docked for majority of the time to conduct sightseeing, with the sailing to occur of an evening. The vessel will be docked either in Aswan or Luxor. Depending on the time of year and number of vessels operating at the same time, you will also find that all vessels are docked beside one another, which is beyond our control.

To ensure that our customers have appropriate expectations prior to their journey, it is important not to compare this experience to that of a European River Cruise, which tend to cover a greater distance and on larger vessels. Instead, you will experience a deluxe stay onboard your vessel, offering a great chance to enjoy the beautiful scenery of the banks of the Nile while you sit back and relax. Your cruise schedule will be provided once onboard.

Day 8 Kom Ombo Temple

Today we’ll journey ashore to visit Kom Ombo Temple. Dedicated to the gods Sobek and Haroeris, this unusual double temple was constructed during the Ptolemaic period, which lasted from 108 to 47 BC.

Set dramatically on the banks of the Nile, 47km north of Aswan and 168km south of Luxor, the soaring, chunky columns of the Great Temple of Kom Ombo are a magnificent sight as you arrive from the river.

The temple is well preserved, especially detail on the murals and columns. One unique engraving is thought to be among the first representations of medical and surgical instruments.

Today, Kom Ombo may be a sleepy agricultural backwater surrounded by sugar cane fields, but its prime position along the Nile once made it one of Upper Egypt’s most important centres. Wander through the temple’s colonnades, gazing up at scenes of kingly propaganda, and you’ll catch a feel of this glorious history for yourself.

Returning to the cruise boat, we’ll continue travelling upriver, with free time relaxing on the sundeck and taking in the surrounding sights – from fishermen casting nets and farmers working their land to the desert hills that frame the lush riverbanks.

Day 9 Edfu Luxor

Today we will moor near Edfu – home to ancient settlements and temples, as well as a bustling town centre and a bazaar.

Return to the boat for your final evening on one of the world’s greatest rivers. Tonight we overnight in Luxor.

Please note: the only mode of transport available to visit the Temple of Edfu is by locally managed horse and carriages. As a responsible travel-focused business, animal welfare is extremely important to us and we want to ensure that we are not promoting any activities where the working animals are not properly cared for. Unfortunately, some operators of the horse and carriages have been found to be in breach of our animal welfare guidelines and it is, for this reason, we will no longer include the visit to the Temple of Edfu.

In addition to the animal welfare concerns, we have had a substantial amount of feedback suggesting that the experience itself is quite uncomfortable due to the pushy nature of the vendors and local suppliers outside the site. While we recommend that you do not use the horse and carriage to visit the Temple, the decision is ultimately up to you. Edfu is an included port stop on the Nile River cruise schedule.

Day 10 Luxor

Your Nile cruise comes to an end in the open-air museum of Luxor – from the spectacular temple complex of Karnak to the Valley of the Kings, Luxor is full of wonderfully-preserved reminders of the pharaohs.

Today we'll explore the magnificent Karnak Temple, which is perhaps the most impressive of all the ancient pharaohs' monumental works. One of the world's most celebrated temple complexes, Karnak was built over some 200 years and was once known as the 'Chosen of Places'. Your guided tour of this vast temple of impressive pylons, obelisks and chapels will reveal its finest sections, such as the Avenue of Sphinxes and the Great Temple of Amun.

The rest of the day is yours: relax, shop in the excellent bazaar, or perhaps experience the atmosphere of a local teahouse.

Situated on the East Bank of the Nile River, in the city of Luxor, Luxor Temple was built approximately 1400 BC. The site is over 73 sq km and exhibits obelisks, giant statues, an Avenue of Sphinx statues, the Grand colonnade and the Barque Shrine of Theban Triad. Viewing is as majestic at night as it is during the day.

Please note: the start and duration times outlined are subject to change based on factors beyond our control such as traffic and weather conditions. Your Tour Guide will confirm operation times with you whilst on-tour and can answer any further questions you may have.

Start: 4:00pm End: 6:00pm Inclusions: return transfers to temple, entrance into Luxor Temple

Day 11 Luxor

Today we'll discover some of the many wonders of ancient Thebes. Our first stop is the Colossi of Memnon, two 17-metre-high statues on Luxor's west bank. Carved from granite blocks, they represent the Pharaoh Amenhotep III and were once part of an impressive colonnade.

We'll continue onto the spectacular royal burial site of the Valley of the Kings. Buried under the arid hills here are the tombs of more than 60 pharaohs, many richly decorated with reliefs and paintings. Explore this sprawling and spectacular place with your guide, where the pharaohs of the New Kingdom (16th to 11th century BCE) were secretly interred for all eternity, and where archaeological discoveries are still being made. Your guide will explain the history of and legends surrounding these remarkable people, their funerary rites, and the significance of the many paintings and hieroglyphics, still well-preserved in the deepest tombs.

You will visit three of the most interesting royal tombs and then continue to the Temple of Queen Hatshepsut, a stunning colonnaded building set against high cliffs that create a spectacular natural amphitheatre. One of Egypt’s greatest queens, she built this temple to prove her importance – the scale and elegance of her temple certainly proves a point!

The afternoon is yours to explore – perhaps you'd like to shop in the market or visit the world's first Mummification Museum to discover the secrets of pharaonic preservation.

Day 12 Luxor Hurghada

Today we'll bid farewell to the Nile and drive east to the beachside town of Hurghada. The Nile valley's verdant landscape is soon replaced with the barren Eastern Desert. Passing through rocky hills, we'll begin to catch glimpses of the glittering waters of the Red Sea and the rugged bulk of the Sinai Peninsula looms through the haze on the opposite shore.

A vibrant beach resort, Hurghada is by no means a typical adventure destination. Known for its underwater reefs and marine life, it’s a popular diving destination. After checking into your hotel, take a walking tour with your guide to get your bearings, and check out some of the local restaurants and eateries.

You will have the remainder of the evening at leisure, plus enjoy a sumptuous buffet dinner tonight in your 5-star hotel.

Day 13 Hurghada

Today is yours to relax in this Red Sea beachside town.

Day 14 Hurghada Cairo

Today we'll leave Hurghada and take the short flight back to Cairo.

Upon our return to the capital we'll enjoy an essential Egyptian experience – a visit to Khan El-Khalili bazaar, a memorable shopping experience in the historic centre of Islamic Cairo. Even if you are not looking to buy, take a walk through the colourful winding alleys of this labyrinth district – you’ll feel like you stepped back in time to an old Arab souk. Selling handicrafts, delicious spices, fabrics and clothes, it’s been a shopping district for thousands of years.

We'll then continue to our hotel for free time.

Sit down for a home-cooked meal with a local family. During this experience, you'll get to visit a local family and learn about Egyptian culture and traditions but most importantly, enjoy a delicious and authentic home-cooked meal.

Starts: approx: To be confirmed on tour by your Tour Guide.

Duration: approx. 3 hours

Please note the start and duration times outlined are subject to change based on factors beyond our control such as traffic and weather conditions. Your Tour Guide will confirm operation times with you whilst on-tour and can answer any further questions you may have.

Day 15 Cairo Amman Dead Sea

Today, get ready for the next leg of your journey as you are transferred to the airport for your flight to Amman, Jordan. Welcome to Jordan, cosmopolitan and contemporary, yet steeped in biblical history. On arrival at Amman's Queen Alia International Airport, you will be met by our representative and transferred to your hotel on the shores of the Dead Sea.

Day 16 Dead Sea Amman Jerash Dead Sea

After breakfast we head back to Amman and enjoy a tour of this capital city. Cosmopolitan and contemporary, yet steeped in ancient biblical history, Amman is a bit of a chameleon. Most of the city's historical sites are located downtown. Here we'll visit the Citadel, with remains from the Roman to the early Islamic period; the Jordan Archaeological Museum, which houses the oldest Neolithic statues dating from 8000 to 5000 NC, as well as other valuable artifacts; the souq, where we'll get an idea of everyday life; as well as the beautifully restored 2nd-century Roman Theatre.

Next we'll take a short drive (approximately one-hour) north to Jerash. Once one of the grandest ancient Roman cities in the world, Jerash now boasts some of the best Greco-Roman ruins around. Admire this site's striking collection of crumbling archways, theatres, baths, public buildings and colonnaded streets. Grand columns encircle the city's centrepiece, the Oval Plaza, a wonderfully atmospheric place to linger after exploring this ruined city's lasting riches. We enjoy lunch in Jerash before driving back to the Dead Sea.

Day 17 Dead Sea Petra

Today marks the beginning of our journey towards the fabled site of Petra. En route we'll visit Madaba, an ancient market town that's home to a number of fine Byzantine mosaics, the most outstanding of which lies within Saint George's Greek Orthodox Church. Here, a map of the Holy Land once carpeted the whole floor, said to contain more than two million pieces. Crafted around 560 CE, a large swathe of this mosaic map can still be viewed, providing the oldest map of Palestine in existence.

Next we'll continue to the ancient village at Dana, on the edge of the Dana Biosphere Reserve, where local artisans sell silver jewellery.

Later, we'll drive along the King's Highway, up to Shobak Castle, sometimes known as Montreal. Perched at the top of a hill in the desert, this ancient Crusader castle was originally built to protect the eastern flank of the Latin Kingdom and its trade routes to the sea before it fell to Muslim sultan Saladin in 1189. Stroll the site and discover a small chapel, original gatehouse, and find out where a long, dark secret passage leads.

Day 18 Petra

Get ready for Petra! A firm fixture on most bucket lists for good reason – the jewel of Jordan is an arresting sight. The so-called Rose City boasts an impressive series of tombs, caves and temples hidden behind ornate façades carved directly into the rock. No one knows the exact date of this desert kingdom's creation, but the lost city of the Nabateans is believed to date as far back as the 2nd century CE. The city has lain empty and unknown for centuries, only rediscovered in 1812 by a Swiss explorer.

You'll feel just like Indiana Jones, as you meander through the narrow canyon known as the Siq; at times the path measures only a few metres wide, with walls soaring up to 180 metres on either side of you. It's easy to imagine the armies and merchants who made their way here many years ago, and the sense of awe they too must have felt upon reaching this ancient rock-hewn kingdom, surrounded by such a stark landscape. The Siq is the main entranceway to The Treasury – perhaps Petra's most iconic sight, and one of its most elaborate temples.

Petra's greatest surprise, however, is its size. With our guide we'll explore the old Roman road, the amphitheatre and several tombs. We'll also climb up to the beautiful façade of the Monastery, from where you will have a magnificent view of the entire site.

Exploring this truly extraordinary destination is sure to be a highlight of your trip.

Day 19 Petra Wadi Rum

We continue to Wadi Rum and browse around the excellent and informative visitor's centre. We'll visit several of Wadi Rum's distinctive rock formations and soak in the vast silence, towering sandstone mountains and spectacular desert landscapes of this surreal 'Valley of the Moon', where, the wind-sculpted rock formations change in hue throughout the day.

We'll also meet with local Bedouins, who live in scattered camps throughout the area, and ride camels to our traditional Bedouin tent, situated deep within the valley. We'll enjoy an evening with them at one of their camps, savouring the hospitality of these nomadic peoples and the uninterrupted desert panoramas.

Wadi Rum is probably best known for its connection with the enigmatic British army officer TE Lawrence, who was based here during the Great Arab Revolt of 1917-18. Much of David Lean's movie on his exploits, Lawrence of Arabia , was actually filmed in this very region.

Please note - While we are sure that this experience will inspire you, please be aware that your stay will differ from that of a traditional hotel. There are no hotels in or near Wadi Rum: the only places to sleep are the numerous bedouin-run camps dotted around the desert. The camps that we use are quoted as being 'luxury' because their locations differ from other styles of camps and your tent will have its own ensuite. Even at the best and more 'luxurious' camps, bathroom facilities within the tents are somewhat rudimentary and the bedding can also be quite basic, however still offering you a comfortable nights' accommodation. All of your meals are included and will be served in a common social area. While we may not make it sound glamorous, it will be a unique and memorable experience.

Day 20 Wadi Rum Amman

After waking up in the unique environment of the luxury camp this morning, we'll enjoy a walk around the area before scaling one of the large dunes to enjoy sensational views of the surrounding area; keen photographers will be delighted. We'll then ride camels back across the Wadi Rum desert.

Later, we'll drive for approximately an hour and a half to reach a radically different landscape – the Dead Sea. We'll spend the afternoon on the shores of this famous body of water, named for the dearth of life in its waters. The saline water has a high density that keeps bathers buoyant and makes getting underneath the surface very difficult. Floating on the surface without any sort of lilo makes for a once in a lifetime experience. Afterwards we'll return to Amman for the evening.

Important Information

Fitness Requirements While the tour itinerary should give you some guidance and overview to the expected requirements, to determine if this tour is right for you we categorise each of our tours in terms of their intensity. These guidelines are to ensure that each tour group is conducted as expected and to ensure the overall satisfaction of all Inspiring Vacations customers.

As a general rule, porterage is not included, therefore at all times you are expected to handle your own luggage where help may not be available.

This particular tour is categorised as a “3”:

3 – Moderate Tour: A good level of fitness and mobility is required, as this tour includes a moderate level of physical activity and is considered a medium-fast paced tour. You should be able to walk up and down stairs, get on and off the coach and able to walk reasonable distances of approximately 2 kilometres per day or more with ease. Any physical ailments you may have must be disclosed at the time of booking to determine your suitability. If you have any form of walking aids, other than a walking stick or hiking poles, then this tour is not suitable.

Tipping A friendly reminder that tipping is not included in your package. You will be asked to provide tipping to your guide towards a ‘kitty’, which is then used towards the guide tipping for the services of helpers, hotel staff, restaurants and airport porterage. We suggest USD$5 (AUD$7 approx) per person per day towards the kitty. Please note that this tipping is not for the guide, merely for the guide to tip the services of the driver and local workers during your tour. While not made compulsory, if you choose not to contribute to the kitty it means that the guide is tipping for these services out of their own pocket. Your cooperation in this instance is most appreciated.

Tipping for your guide will be collected at the commencement or conclusion of their services in each country. To remove the uncertainty and stress of not knowing how much is appropriate to tip we recommend USD$6-8 (AUD$8-12 approx) per person per day. The amount you wish to contribute is dependent on the services received and at the complete discretion of the guest. Thank you for your understanding.

Accommodation The accommodation listed is subject to change. Any changes will be of an equal or higher standard. Bedding configurations (double or twin) are requests only. All efforts will be made to meet your preferences however any changes are beyond our control.

Single Supplement Single supplement is $2,399 per person in addition to the twin share price.
