Concert review - Journey in Birmingham with Foreigner & Styx

There will have been plenty of melodic rock fans pinching themselves at the LG Arena last to make sure they were not dreaming.

Journey, Foreigner & Styx

LG Arena, Birmingham

Concert review and photos by Ian Harvey

Could this really be three giants of the American AOR scene on stage in front of them, three bands that pretty much define the very meaning of melodic rock?

Click on the image top right to start our concert photo gallery

Well, yes it could. And it was a night that proved that if you, ahem, don't stop believing, dreams really can come true.

First off were Styx, with Tommy Shaw and James JY Young leading proceedings as they powered their way through a criminally short set which still packed a mighty punch.

Miss America, Come Sail Away and Renegade were stand-out moments, with the absence of their sickly sweet ballad Babe the only thing thing that might have had all but the die-hards scratching their heads. In truth it hasn't been a part of Styx's set for some time and was not missed.

Foreigner singer Kelly Hansen took total command of the LG Arena as he bounced on to the stage. He is truly an inspired replacement for original singer Lou Gramm, possessing a mighty set of pipes as well as an utterly infectious stage presence, the perfect foil for the group's uber cool leader and guitarist, the English-born Mick Jones. Hansen even found time for a walkabout into the crowd.

As well as the rapturously-received ballads I Want To Know What Love Is and Waiting For A Girl Like You, Foreigner proved they could rock out too, with Feels Like The First Time, Hot Blooded and Juke Box Hero hitting the mark.

Talking of heroes, Journey have a new one. Their Phillipines-born singer Arnel Pineda has clearly grown into his role over the past four years and was on a mission to win hearts and minds as he led the band through possibly the greatest back-catalogue in melodic rock.

While lead guitarist Neal Schon is the beating heart of the band, Pineda brings along a youthful vitality and enthusiasm, a non-stop energy and a voice that is as near as is humanly possible a perfect replacement for Journey's much-missed singer Steve Perry.

Kicking things off with Jonathan Cain's keyboard intro to Separate Ways (Worlds Apart), Journey raised the roof with both singles and fan favourites, from the ballads Open Arms and Faithfully, to Stone In Love, Lights and Wheel In The Sky. Drummer Deen Castronovo impressed as ever when he took over on lead vocals for a spine tingling Mother, Father.

Three tracks from the band's new album Eclipse, were aired, with the single City Of Hope - dedicated to Pineda's hometown of Manilla - showing that Journey have not lost the knack of crafting a perfect and uplifting, melodic rock gem.

Of course, while the night was about more than just one song, when that song did arrive it almost lifted the roof of the arena out of sight. It's easy to forget that the chorus of Don't Stop Believin' only appears at the very end of the song after a mighty long tease. Post Glee it was time for Journey - and their fans - to reclaim melodic rock's greatest classic, and both did so in magnificent style.

After the last song of the main set, Anyway You Want It, Journey returned for their traditional encore, Lovin' Touchin' Squeezin', and a chance for the fans to sing themselves hoarse one last time.

Hopefully any fans who think last night's concert was just a dream have this review to prove that it really did happen. And then some.

REVIEW – JOURNEY, FOREIGNER & STYX

foreigner styx journey tour 2011

If Carlsberg did AOR heaven…they couldn’t do a better job than this. Three bands battling it out for pop rock supremacy with a packed crowd the ultimate winner.

Early birds and straight into their stride, Styx proved to be the perfect warm-up for the main event. Vocally sensational – neither Foreigner nor Journey beat Lawrence Gowan and Tommy Shaw on the night – the Chicago band didn’t waste a minute of their brief but spellbinding set.

With more than three quarters of the crowd in their seats to hear stone cold classics Too Much Time On My Hands , Lady and Renegade it was almost as if the headliners had arrived prematurely. And when Styx rolled off a flawless version of Come Sail Away it became clear this lot were never added to a tantalising triple bill simply to make up the numbers.

Unable to call on the flashy light shows used by their fellow bands and with time of the essence the rejuvenated six-piece simply relied on the music. It worked an absolute treat as the Metro Radio Arena was transformed into the Paradise Theatre for one night only.

Foreigner’s first task was upping the ante as Mick Jones and co. arrived on stage with Styx’s sugar-sweet melodies still ringing in their ears. Then again the multi-million selling AOR superstars have followed tougher acts in their career and the challenge appeared to enthuse the second band on the bill.

Kelly Hansen couldn’t be a better foil for Jones and the lithe former Hurricane frontman hit every note as if his life depended on it. After thrilling the High Voltage crowd with the set of the weekend in Victoria Park last summer the clamour for Foreigner’s return had reached fever pitch and this canny set maintained the band’s unrelenting momentum.

Hit after hit bombarded a crowd baying for more only to realise there was absolutely no opportunity to visit the bar or spend a penny. Wrapt from start to finish the masses took a lead from Hansen to throw themselves into classics Double Vision, Feels Like The First Time and Cold As Ice .

The party was in full swing by the time Urgent announced itself as what would be the highlight of the evening. Mixing a brilliant backdrop with Thom Gimbel’s spine tingling sax, Foreigner far surpassed any expectations with this one stunning song alone.

I Want To Know What Love Is almost seemed lame by comparison but Hansen wasn’t to blame. On an evening when Styx set the vocal standard, the assured singer was on a mission to pose the question Lou who?

It was a mission Hansen accomplished with some aplomb but poor Arnel Pineda struggled to emerge from the shadow of Messrs. Perry and Augeri for long periods of, by the headliners’ incredibly high standards, a patchy set.

Journey had promised to bring their A-game to the UK in the face of serious competition in the shape of Styx and Foreigner. Ultimately a ropey start suggested the main men were initially fazed by the supercharged performances of their touring buddies.

A poor mix coupled with an out-of-sync rhythm section scuppered Journey’s plans to make an immediate impact and Separate Ways (Worlds Apart) was barely representative of a band boasting class and experience in abundance.

Ask The Lonely marked a turning point with a big light show and powerful Pineda delivery pulling things around. Still failing to match Foreigner for sheer passion, Journey were on the road to recovery and by the time City Of Hope , from new album Eclipse , rang out Newcastle was just that.

The hope was justified. Open Arms hit all the right buttons and Pineda hit his peak on a pin sharp rendition of Faithfully . Running Urgent close as the song of the night, the Filipino revelled in the opportunity to fire off a perfect take on an AOR classic.

The final notes of that song sparked a mini exodus and, in truth, Journey’s encore was no jewel in the Tuesday night crown. Finishing like they had started, the headliners lacked spark as the curfew called and if complacency isn’t creeping in then consistency is certainly a problem. Foreigner won this particular battle but Don’t Stop Believin’ that Journey will win the war.

Says FOREIGNER founding member and lead guitarist, Mick Jones, “I am very much looking forward to the band being back on the road with our old friends, STYX.  Our ‘Soundtrack Of Summer’ tour ten years ago was a blockbuster, and our tour album was a Billboard chart success. It’ll be a great time had by all.  As an added bonus, John Waite will accompany us on the journey, adding his #1 hits to a special night of Classic Rock.”

“As we continue on with our Farewell Tour, I have been very moved by the support and reaction of all of our fans. To perform these next shows with our friends STYX and John Waite makes it even better. I am so looking forward to spending many beautiful summer nights all around the country, full of great Classic Rock, music, and great friends,” added FOREIGNER lead singer, Kelly Hansen.

And as John Waite declares, “Looking forward to blazing across the USA with my band this summer. All the hits in all the cities. It will be major. A great night. Don’t miss it – be there!”

Coming December 11 to align with the band’s announcement for the next leg of FOREIGNER’s Farewell Tour, Rhino Records will release brand new Atmos remixes of their classic compilation album, RECORDS . It spans the group’s first four full-length studio albums and remains one of their best-selling albums to date. Re-released earlier this Fall by Rhino Atlantic as a 1LP BEST OF package in black vinyl as well as a clear vinyl Walmart Exclusive, this new digital offering of RECORDS will be available at all digital streaming partners who support spatial audio mixes, including Apple Music, Amazon Music and TIDAL. Mick Jones continues to elevate FOREIGNER’s influence and guide the band to new horizons with his stylistic songwriting, indelible guitar hooks and multi-layered talents while lead singer Kelly Hansen, one of rock’s greatest showmen, has led FOREIGNER into the digital age inspiring a whole new generation of fans. Bassist Jeff Pilson; Michael Bluestein on keyboards; guitarist Bruce Watson; Chris Frazier on drums and guitarist Luis Maldonado provide an unprecedented level of energy that has resulted in the re-emergence of the astounding music that speaks to FOREIGNER‘s enduring popularity.  FOREIGNER has an extraordinary streaming and radio audience driven by a catalogue of no less than sixteen Top 30 hits. With more Billboard Top 10 hits than Journey, and just as many as Fleetwood Mac, FOREIGNER is universally hailed as one of the most popular rock acts in the world with a formidable musical arsenal that continues to propel sold-out tours and album sales, now exceeding 80 million.  Responsible for some of rock and roll’s most enduring anthems, including “Juke Box Hero,” “Cold As Ice,” “Hot Blooded,” “Waiting For A Girl Like You,” “Feels Like The First Time,” “Urgent,” “Head Games,” “Say You Will,” “Dirty White Boy,” “Long, Long Way From Home” and the worldwide #1 hit, “I Want To Know What Love Is,” FOREIGNER still rocks the charts more than 40 years into the game with massive airplay and continued Billboard Top 200 album success.  Streams of FOREIGNER’s hits are approaching 15 million per week.

Multi-Platinum rockers STYX –James “JY” Young (lead vocals, guitars), Tommy Shaw (lead vocals, guitars), Chuck Panozzo (bass, vocals), Todd Sucherman (drums, percussion), Lawrence Gowan (lead vocals, keyboards) and Ricky Phillips (bass, guitar, vocals), Will Evankovich (mandolin, guitars)— released their 17 th studio album, CRASH OF THE CROWN , on June 18, 2021 on the band’s label, Alpha Dog 2T/UMe , which was hailed by critics as their second “masterpiece” album in a row. The first being 2017’s THE MISSION , their first new studio album in 14 years at the time. CRASH OF THE CROWN was written pre-pandemic and recorded during the trying times of the pandemic. It’s available as clear vinyl, black vinyl, CD on digital platforms . They released more new music on September 17, 2021, THE SAME STARDUST EP, originally sold as part of Record Store Day (June 12, 2021). Available on blue 180-gram 12-inch vinyl only, featuring two brand-new songs on side one (“The Same Stardust” and “Age of Entropia”), as well as five live performances on side two of some of Styx’s classic hits previously heard during their “Styx Fix” livestreams that kept fans company during the pandemic on their official YouTube page, including “Mr. Roboto,” “Man In The Wilderness,” “Miss America,” “Radio Silence,” and “Renegade.” It’s available worldwide on all digital platforms . The seven men comprising STYX have committed to rocking the Paradise together with audiences far and wide by entering their second decade of averaging over 100 shows a year, and each one of them is committed to making the next show better than the last. Styx draws from over four decades of barn burning chart hits, joyous singalongs, and hard-driving deep cuts. Like a symphony that builds to a satisfying crescendo, a STYX set covers a wide range of stylistic cornerstones. From the progressively sweeping splendor that is “The Grand Illusion” to the hunker-down fortitude of all that is the “Blue Collar Man,” from the majestic spiritual love for a special “Lady” to the seething indictment of preening, primping pageantry for pageantry’s sake of “Miss America,” from an individual yearning for true connection as a “Man in the Wilderness,” to a soul-deep quest to achieve what’s at the heart of one’s personal vision in “Crystal Ball,” from the regal reach-for-the-stars bravado of “Come Sail Away” to the grainy all-in gallop of that rugged “Renegade” who had it made, the band draws on an unlimited cache of ways to immerse one’s mind and body in their signature sound. STYX hit its stride with guitarist/vocalist Tommy Shaw’s first LP with the band, 1976’s CRYSTAL BALL , and then they become the first group to score four triple-Platinum albums in a row: THE GRAND ILLUSION (1977), PIECES OF EIGHT (1978), CORNERSTONE (1979), and PARADISE THEATER (1981).

John Waite has been touring the U.S. for the past years, performing his catalog of hits from his 40-year career as a solo artist, with The Babys and Bad English. Those hits include some of the most loved songs of the ‘80s and ‘90s. The #1 worldwide hit “Missing You,” The Babys’ “Isn’t It Time” and Bad English’s “When I See You Smile” rank amongst some of his biggest international hits and are still heard on radio today.  Others include “Tears,” “Change” and “These Times Are Hard For Lovers,” while “Every Step Of The Way” and “If Anybody Had A Heart” appeared on the soundtrack to the 1986 Demi Moore film About Last Night , and “Deal for Life”–penned by Martin Page and Bernie Taupin–was featured in the Days Of Thunder soundtrack. He even reached top country charts with his duet of “Missing You” with country singer, Alison Krauss. As a solo artist and as the lead singer of The Babys and Bad English, John Waite has been a fixture of album-oriented rock radio stations throughout the decades with his talent for power ballads and driving arena rock. His latest music, WOODEN HEART ACOUSTIC ANTHOLOGY THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS VOLUMES 1 2 3 , was released in 2021 In December 2022, his documentary, John Waite — The Hard Way, was released on streaming and as a DVD and Blu-ray on Amazon and features candid interviews with Waite, which were shot during the COVID-19 shutdown. It looks at his whole career, from his years fronting The Babys, to his successful solo career, to his work with Bad English and beyond. And it includes rare archival footage and photos, as well as interviews with award-winning songwriter Diane Warren, guitarist Neil Giraldo and many others. The movie also features footage of Waite touring with Ringo Starr’s All Starr Band.

Local News | Foreigner and Styx bring musical arms race to Michigan

foreigner styx journey tour 2011

This spring and summer, Foreigner, Styx, and former Foreigner frontman Lou Gramm head to Michigan for a slew of concerts.

Gary Johnson, the president of the Michigan Rock and Roll Legends Hall of Fame in Bay City, told The Morning Sun that “it was next to impossible to be listening to your car radio during the late ‘70s and early ‘80s and not hear a song by either Foreigner or Styx.”

“Both bands had a penchant for crafting interesting albums along with catchy singles that enabled them to dominate playlists on both AM and FM stations,” he said.

Darcy Irland-Risener of Flint added that their hits, from “Come Sail Away” to “Juke Box Hero,” “Renegade” to “Hot Blooded,”completely saturated the airwaves of Michigan’s department stores, coffee shops, clubs, and restaurants at the same time.

However, numerous Michigan residents told The Morning Sun that they would not have chosen to escape Foreigner and Styx’s music even if they could have — and they cannot wait to see them perform.

Michigan Mania

Sharon Bell of Metro Detroit said that Foreigner has been her favorite band for over 40 years.

“My brother, a true music lover, bought me my very first album,” she said. “It happened to be Foreigner’s very first album, which I fell in love with.”

Connie Erwin-Flanagan of Niles said that her brothers introduced her to Styx when she was about 12 years old and that she has followed the band ever since.

“The first album I bought with my own money was The Grand Illusion,” she recalled.

Erwin-Flanagan also reminisced about helping the now-defunct JD’s Pizza deliver food to Styx guitarist and vocalist Tommy Shaw when he lived in Niles.

“He was very nice,” she said. “He would usually order a sausage and pepperoni, sometimes just a pepperoni. He always tipped really good. He’s such a down to Earth guy.”

As Michigan residents visit their former heroes at a string of Great Lakes State shows in the coming weeks, they should know that, while they were busy idolizing these two bands 40 years ago, those musical acts were similarly busy admiring each other.

Foreigner Admired Styx

Lou Gramm, Foreigner’s lead singer from its founding in 1976 to 1990 and then again from 1992 to 2003, told The Morning Sun that he greatly appreciated Styx’s talent.

Lou Gramm

“I always thought their musicianship was good, and their vocals were exemplary,” he said about the band founded four years before Foreigner.

“Their repertoire seemed to get better as time went by,” he continued. “Every album made me give it a second listen because I heard things in there that I really liked.”

Styx Admired Foreigner

Gramm may have heard Styx on the radio before the Chicago-founded band even knew who he was.

Nevertheless, Styx founding member, lead guitarist, and vocalist James Young told The Morning Sun that Foreigner came on Styx’s radar soon after the group released its self-titled 1977 debut album.

“They had some great rock songs, and their lead singer was fantastic,” he said. “And they had very strong guitar playing in Mick Jones.”

“Collectively, they wrote great songs, and they recorded great sounding records,” he continued. “I love that band.”

Foreigner Plays Catch-Up

Foreigner matched Styx’s musical success rapidly.

While Styx had one top 20 hit in the first four years of its musical career — “Lady,” which peaked at Number Six — all three of Foreigner’s debut album singles (“Feels Like the First Time,” “Cold As Ice,” and “Long, Long Way from Home”) hit the top 20.

“We were maybe a little more adventurous with the structure we applied where Foreigner’s [songs] are a little more predictable,” Young said. “Maybe that makes them a little more friendly to the average listener.”

“I think we were more of a vocal band, in a way, than Foreigner was,” he continued. “They were about a lead singer, but we were about the harmonies, in a sense, a little bit more, and trying to not be just one-trick ponies.”

A Hitmaking Arms Race

“Michael J,” a nationally syndicated iHeart Radio host heard on Central Michigan’s 98.5 WUPS-FM, told The Morning Sun that, by 1977, Foreigner and Styx seemed to be engaged in nothing short of a hitmaking arms race. When one band would break new ground, the other would quickly follow.

“Styx and Foreigner’s battle for ticket sales and the radio airwaves ignited in March of 1977” when Foreigner released its first single,” he said. “I vividly remember the debut of both of these ‘arena rockers’ because they were my first two concerts consecutively.”

Styx dropped its breakout record, The Grand Illusion, which counted the title track plus “Come Sail Away” and “Fooling Yourself” as hit singles, just four months after Foreigner released its breakthrough debut album.

Young said that, when recording The Grand Illusion, the band did not make a concerted effort to become a more mainstream-friendly group.

“We were kind of learning as we went along,” he said. “There was no premeditation to this whole thing.”

“To think that it was all pre-thought through before we got started— no, we were just trying to write another good song and then find a way to deliver it in a way that might catch somebody’s ear currently at that time,” he continued.

Which band had the more successful rise to fame? It depends on who you ask.

While Foreigner edged out The Grand Illusion commercially and in Billboard Hot 200 placement (number four for the former, number six for the latter), Michael J said he believed Styx offered morestage presence and overall concert excitement.

The Foreigner-Styx musical arms race continued the following year when Foreigner’s Double Vision (featuring “Hot Blooded,” “Blue Morning, Blue Day,” and the successful title track) and Styx’s Pieces of Eight (“Blue Collar Man,” “Renegade”) battled it out on the charts.

On Top of the World

In 1981, this friendly musical rivalry reached its climax.

Styx, still riding the high of releasing Paradise Theater (“The Best of Times,” “Too Much Time on My Hands”), its first number-one album, watched Foreigner drop the first number-one record of its own months later.

That album, 4, included “Juke Box Hero,” “Urgent,” and “Waiting for a Girl Like You.”

This competition-not-competition between the two groupsultimately resulted in a near-statistical tie in Billboard standings – one Number One single (“I Want to Know What Love Is”) and nine top ten hits for Foreigner, and one Number One (“Babe”) and eight top tens for Styx.

Catch Them Live!

This spring and summer, Michigan residents can hang with these rockers at a series of shows.

Styx will play at the Soaring Eagle Casino and Resort on Saturday, May 3, and Sunday, May 4. Then, the band will return to Michigan in June with Foreigner for the first show of their Renegades-Juke Box Heroes tour, which will stop in Grand Rapids on June 11 and Clarkston on June 15.

Gramm will not reunite with his former bandmates for a few songs like he did at two 2017 Mt. Pleasant gigs to commemorate Foreigner’s 40th anniversary. However, on August 23, he will perform a full set of Foreigner classics in Clarkston with Poison’s Bret Michaels.

Gramm said that, after 52 years of being on the road, he will retire from touring later this year.

“I can’t say that I could go another 10 years, or five years even,” he said. I’ve run the course.”

Foreigner keyboardist Michael Bluestein told The Morning Sun that, after this tour, his band will reduce the number of shows it performs annually.

Young said that he will, to quote “Come Sail Away,” carry on with Styx.

“I do a lot of reading about what medical supplements to take, like vitamin D3 and K2,” said the guitarist, who played the role of Doctor Righteous for Styx’s 1983 rock opera and concept album Kilroy Was Here. “I’m in my 70s, but I love doing what I do and go out of my way to stay physically in shape.”

Mammoth Music Legacies

While some of these acts may be beginning to dissipate from the road, Bret Hoag, a music lecturer at the University of Michigan, told The Morning Sun that their legacies and impact on the modern-day music scene have demonstrated no signs of evaporating.

“At the University of Michigan, in my intermediate guitar classes, students had to learn and perform rock tunes to know for one of their projects,” he said. “Multiple times, 18- to 22-year-old students wanted to learn Foreigner and Styx’s songs.”

“They are bands that remain relevant.”

The best taxi services in Moscow

foreigner styx journey tour 2011

How best to drive a taxi in Moscow

Moscow is a huge metropolis – the capital of the Russian Federation is three times as large and has three times as many inhabitants as Berlin, for example. Of course, getting from A to B is an important topic for visitors and locals alike. The metro is certainly the number one form of transportation in the Russian mega city. But as practical as the subway may be: in the rush hour it can get damn stuffy on the trains – especially in the city center and on the ring line the trains burst at the seams in the morning and in the evening and sometimes you have wait to be able to get in at all. In addition, you cannot get to the airport by metro. The most obvious solution is certainly the taxi. As a foreigner, you have to know a lot about Moscow and taxis. In Soviet times, taxis were affordable, but not competitive in comparison to heavily subsidized public transport. In addition, taxi drivers had a bad reputation and often questionable work ethic. Hardly everyone drove a taxi in Moscow and there were accordingly few. The development in the wild nineties, which were economically difficult for Russia, in which even many doctors, engineers and scientists had to earn something as taxi drivers, was quite different. The so-called “bombily” (from the Russian word bombit’, to earn something extra) came into service. It became common practice that as a pedestrian on the side of the road you only had to keep your hand out and stop a (usually unmarked) taxi or a bombila in a matter of minutes. A short negotiation about the price and you’re on your way. In 2011, the Moscow city administration estimated that in addition to the 5,000 licensed taxis, at least ten times as many black taxis were on the move.

«Black» taxis – not advisable for tourists

For tourists, especially inexperienced Russia, these taxis are anything but advisable. At first you will have communication problems even with kindly Bombila-drivers without knowledge of Russian. Even with proper school Russian, as a tourist you lack the local knowledge and an idea of the usual prices – which is why you are almost at the mercy of the many black sheep among the «black» taxi drivers.

Russia trip planned? Under the following link you can find out how to get the necessary visa!

However, if you have sufficient knowledge of Russian, are clear about the exact route beforehand and can still negotiate well, it may be worth trying the «black» taxis. Because of the increasingly popular taxi apps, the «black» taxis are a slowly but surely dying phenomenon. As a rule of thumb, you shouldn’t pay more than 500 rubles for a trip within Moscow and if the driver demands too much, just keep going.

foreigner styx journey tour 2011

Taxi apps: Gett, Yandex, or Uber?

Equipped with a SIM card and mobile internet, it is certainly the best option as a tourist to get around using the taxi app. The world’s leading provider Uber only plays a subordinate role in Russia. Although the app also exists in Russia, Uber works here in cooperation with the local top dog Yandex Taxi. Yandex is often referred to as the Russian Google and is also very popular as a taxi service. The Yandex app works similarly to that of Uber. You can see in advance the fare to be paid later, the license plate as well as the vehicle type and the driver’s previous ratings. However, at Yandex you can pay not only with a credit card, but also in cash with the driver. The prices that Yandex calls in Moscow for the so-called Eco tariff are very moderate. The basic fare, which includes a five-minute journey and three kilometers, is 129 rubles, or about $ 1.81. Each additional kilometer then costs 10 rubles, i.e. $ 0.14. Trips to Moscow airports are billed at the normal tariff. However, a pick-up fee of 449 rubles, i.e. $ 6.32, has to be paid from the major international airports Vnukovo, Sheremetyevo and Domodedovo to the city. The standard fare will be 8 rubles per 1 km and 8 rubles per 1 minute. Of course, Yandex also offers high-quality transport, analogous to Uber’s offer. From the business tariff, in which you are chauffeured in a limousine from 349 rubles ($ 4.91), to the so-called ultimate tariff, in which you drive through in a Mercedes S-Class from 1899 rubles ($ 26.75) Moscow is driven, the Yandex offer knows no limits. Even vehicles specially equipped for transport for children, with special paint can be ordered via the app. Gett’s competition offers a similar range of products at generally lower prices. The cheapest service in vehicles of the VW Polo class currently starts at 99 rubles ($ 1.39). Trips to Moscow airports cost almost a quarter less than Yandex at 350 rubles ($ 4.93). The VIP service with vehicles that include the BMW 7 Series, the S-Class or the Audi A8 is also significantly more affordable at 700 rubles ($ 9.86) – even if fewer inclusive kilometers are included in the price.

Classic taxi services: Rare and usually only on order

Taxis in the western sense are rarely seen in Moscow. Just wave a taxi up from the street like in Berlin, London or New York? This is rather unlikely because there are simply too few taxis. You have to order a classic taxi in Moscow beforehand. Despite the competition from «black» taxis and the increasingly popular apps, there are still numerous companies that offer this. However, it is usually impossible to order one of these taxis without knowledge of Russian. Services that are specially designed for tourists and foreign business travelers can usually be paid for dearly. Therefore, as a tourist, unless you prefer a taxi app from the start, you leave the order to the hotel or local friends.
