Our Real Hawaii Tours & Activities

What makes us different from other tour companies here in Hawaii? Well, we are the real experience. Here at Real Hawaii Tours, we’ve met our fair share of tourists. People who are excited to see our beautiful home.

And you know what the number one question that we hear from almost everyone who visits Hawaii is, “What are the secrets that only locals know about?”

Typically, when visiting one of Hawaii’s beautiful islands you have to know a local to find all of the good stuff that only a native would know where to look. That is the experience that we want to provide to people.

You will still get to see all of the exciting tourist hot spots, as well as landmarks, but you will get to see them the same way that the locals do. That is why we provide the best Hawaii tours compared to other businesses.

Most other tour companies give you some cookie-cutter experience with the Hawaii tour packages that they offer. Our goal is to provide you with the most authentic native Hawaiian experience possible.

We want to share what we love about our home with others that want the experience of authentic Hawaii guided tours. That is why we are one of the top Travel Agencies in Hawaii , and that is what we will share with you when you book a tour with us.

Oahu-Hawaii

The island of Oahu. Arguably the most exciting island here in Hawaii, Oahu is known as a treasure trove for amazing food, incredible experiences, and most of all, stunning scenery. Out of all the islands that make up Hawaii’s archipelago, Oahu is the most densely populated by locals as well as tourists. That must be how it got its nickname “Gathering Place”. Oahu is also well known for the city of Honolulu, the capital of Hawaii. Not to mention North Shore as well as the breathtaking Diamond Head State Monument (a stop through our  Waikiki Trolley  service). This is also the home of Pearl Harbor, one of the most memorable and most tragic moments in our country's history, attracting millions of visitors to Oahu every year.

Maui is known for being the second-largest island in Hawaii. Nicknamed The Valley Isle because of the skinny valley that separates the two volcanic masses that make up the island. The Road to Hana is one of the most popular attractions on Maui. This road is more than just how you get from point A to point B. The Road to Hana is known for its amazing sights and even more amazing history and stories of the Gods.

Haleakala National Park is another major sight for visitors to Maui. The Haleakala crater holds great cultural significance to the locals and breathtaking, once-in-a-lifetime views for visitors. They say the sun rises at Haleakala unlike anywhere else in the world.

Maui has some of the best Hawaii tours and activities that you could ever experience.

Maui-Hawaii

Hawai'i island (Big Island of Hawaii) is the largest island that makes up the islands of Hawaii. Locals call it The Big Island to help make things a little less confusing. The Big Island is the youngest of the 4 Main Hawaiian Islands and is known for it's diverse terrains.

Surprisingly, even though Hawaii is the biggest island the local population is less dense, which can make for a quieter and more secluded vacation.

There are still many stunning things to see on The Big Island as far as Hawaii tours and excursions go. The Big Island is made up of five different volcanoes which are an incredible sight to see. Akaka Falls National Park is another amazing part of the best Hawaii guided tours. This National Park is best known for Akaka Falls, a beautiful lush waterfall over 400 feet tall. Akaka Falls is so mesmerizing that it has been used for many stunning shots in movies, including feature films such as  Jurassic Park.

Kauai, the oldest geological island that makes up Hawaii, is also known as the “Garden Isle”. With a modest population, there is a lot of the island that still retains its natural beauty and lush scenery. Which is how it got the nickname, Garden Isle. Waimea Canyon State Park is the most famous attraction here on Kauai and for good reason. People from all over the world come to Kauai to see one of the best Hawaii tours, Waimea Canyon, because there is nowhere else like it in the entire world. Waimea Canyon is known as one of the most beautiful and enchanting places in all of the Hawaiian Islands. Wailua Falls, also known as twin falls, is a beautiful, lush, and magical two-tier waterfall. It has been used as an iconic symbol for Kauai for years. This is very possibly the most beautiful sight on any of the Hawaiian islands.

New: Our Handpicked Hawaii Tours

Hawaii frequently asked questions, what type of hawaii excursion, tour, or activity should i take.

Well… are you more laid-back and like to relax? Then how about a cocktail cruise? Up for an adrenaline rush? If so, then skydiving might be on your bucket list. Nature lover? Then a garden tour is perfect for you. Many visitors like to book a nice mix of exciting, educational, and relaxing activities to strike the perfect balance of Hawaiian vacation bliss. And because we’ve done all the work for you, all you have to do is decide what your Hawaiian dream vacation should look like.

When is the best time to take a tour in Hawaii?

In a nutshell, this will vary from activity to activity and from one island, as well as area of an island, to another. For example, the summit of Mauna Kea can experience snowstorms in the winter and roads may be closed. However, if you want to see humpback whales, winter is the ideal time to take a tour. We invite you to explore each island’s When to Visit , Weather , and Regions Guides , where you’ll find a wealth of information about conditions, activities, and attractions in the area you’ll be visiting. And, of course, don’t hesitate to contact one of our travel professionals with questions- we’ll be glad to help you.

How many people will be on each tour/activity in Hawaii?

That depends on the type of activity or tour you choose and may vary depending on how you customize your tour if that option is available. For instance, some of our activities may see you sharing a tour with a certain number of strangers, as that’s how that tour operator runs that activity. Or perhaps they give you the option of reserving those spaces for your own personal group. You will even find tours for only one person where you could, for example, hike by yourself with a guide. However, all of the tours and activities featured on GuideofUS Hawaii will specify if they run as groups, if they are customizable, and how many people may participate. Make sure to pick the style that’s best for you.

How much physical exertion is required for a Hawaiian tour?

If the activity or tour you choose has weight, age, height, or physical fitness requirements, these will be very clearly specified in the tour description prior to booking. If you feel that a particular adventure may be too strenuous, there may be other similar adventures offered that are more appropriate for your fitness level. For example, you may consider a shorter or less inclined hike, or perhaps just a zip line run as opposed to a zip, hike, and swim combo tour. Additionally, some tours can be customized to provide the perfect adventure for you and your group; again, this will be noted in the tour description. And because we work with only the best Hawaiian tour and experience providers in the industry, if an accommodation can be made, you can bet they’ll bend over backward to do so.

What do I wear for my tour or activity in Hawaii?

This will vary from tour to tour (snorkeling vs. hiking, for example) and your activity provider will specify any clothing or footwear requirements or suggestions. And please, if they make a recommendation, heed their advice! There’s nothing worse than being in paradise and being miserable because you were cold, didn’t have the right shoes for walking, or couldn’t fully participate because your clothing was inappropriate. Also, many activities provide safety gear you will need; this will be clear to you before you book.

Why take a Hawaii group tour instead of taking it alone?

There are several advantages to taking a Hawaiian group tour. First, it’s simple and worry-free. Many group tours offer pick-up and drop-off services, so transportation isn’t an issue. Plus, if you’re not driving, you can simply sit back and enjoy the ride and not worry about getting from Point A to Point B. Second, taking a group tour means you’ll have an expert guide; one who knows where to find the best of everything- from snorkeling spots, to mountain lookouts, to waterfalls, to historical places, and everything in between. The intimate local knowledge of a guide is priceless. Another plus is safety. For example, if you’re worried about negotiating the hairpin curves of the Road to Hana while trying not to miss something, a guided group tour is for you. You should also consider how much fun a group tour can be- everyone with you is excited about the same adventure as you are. It’s a great way to share an experience and even make new friends.

Where do I get picked up and dropped off for my Hawaii tour?

Some of our activity providers offer this service; while others do not. If your tour provider does include this as part of your tour package, this will be specified in the activity description and during booking. You will also know how this will be coordinated; for example, if you’ll be picked up at your hotel, if you must meet at a certain location, etc.

Which Hawaii tours/activities are best for (kids, seniors, couples, large groups, people with disabilities, etc.?)

No matter who you are, who you’ll be traveling with, or what your physical limitations are, we’re certain you’ll find the perfect tour for your needs on GuideofUS Hawaii; as we really do offer something for every type of traveler. Be sure to read the complete tour description to find out if, for example, children under 5 are permitted, or if wheelchairs can be accommodated, etc. Of course, if you need additional information, feel free to contact the tour provider with questions or concerns and they’ll be happy to help you.

Who are Hawaii tours tailored for? Are children permitted?

We offer something for absolutely everyone- young or young at heart, triathlete or professional couch potato! Whether you’re looking for a multi-day hike of a lifetime, a historical tour or two, or just want to lounge on the beach, GuideofUS Hawaii has the perfect experience for you. Some of the tours we feature do have a certain age or physical requirement; if so, those will be clearly specified before you book your tour.

Which tours are the cheapest in Hawaii?

We are fortunate to work with both visitors to the Hawaiian islands as well as with tour providers who are committed to sharing their passion for and knowledge of the islands with you. Our unique perspective allows us to appreciate that you want the absolute best value for your travel dollars. At the same time, we understand that our activity providers work very hard to give you a safe, memorable, and truly exceptional Hawaiian experience. We have not chosen our providers or activities based solely on cost; that would not be fair to our visitors or to our providers. Ultimately, it’s not about finding the ‘cheapest’ tour, activity, or lodging, but rather the one that gives you a superior Hawaiian experience for your travel budget. We are proud of our selection of Hawaiian activities that offer memorable adventures for every travel style and wallet.

Who will my Hawaii tour guide be?

Many of our tours and activities provide a guide, while some do not. If your adventure is guided, we can assure you that he/she/they will be among the best on the island you choose. Our providers employ accredited, highly-trained, experienced guides who not only live and play in the islands; they also are committed to sharing their passion and love for Hawaii with you. This will be evident in their commitment to giving you a fantastic adventure you will treasure forever!

Hawaii General & Island Specific FAQ

When is the best weather on the hawaiian island i’ll be visiting.

It’s difficult to generalize by lumping all of the islands and regions therein together. Plus, this is a tricky question because Hawaii is the tropics, after all, and weather in the tropics can be fickle. Simply put, don’t worry too much about the weather- temperatures are generally comfy and rain clouds will likely soon pass within a matter of minutes. With that said, keep in mind that Kauai is home to one of the (if not the) wettest spot on Earth and the Big Island is home to 11 different climate zones! We recommend keeping abreast of forecasts before and during your stay and remembering that rain showers often pass quickly. Also, our website has in-depth information about general weather patterns for each island, so you’ll have a better idea of what to expect where you’ll be staying.

When is the best time to see whales in Hawaii?

Humpback whales migrate yearly to Hawaii’s warm waters. Whale ‘season’ runs roughly November through May; however, the majority can be spotted in January through March. February is generally considered peak season. Your tour guide will know exactly where the best spots are to appreciate these majestic creatures.

When is the best time to participate in my activity of choice on the Hawaiian island I’ll be visiting?

If there is an optimal time of year, time of day, or season to enjoy your adventure, this will be made clear in the tour description before you book. More specifically, if you need to plan your daily or weekly adventures, each tour will also specify approximately how long the adventure lasts so you can add other activities to your agenda. Start off your morning with a hike, snorkel in the afternoon, and unwind and relax with a sunset dinner cruise- perfect!

Booking, Payment, & Customer Service FAQ

Why don't i just wait to book when i get to the island.

Because once you’re in Hawaii you should have your toes in the sand, or in the pool, or at the top of a mountain, or flying over a lush valley! Let’s be honest: for many people, going to Hawaii is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. For others, maybe once a year or so. Either way, your time in the islands is precious and limited and you most certainly do not want to be spending it trying to choose an activity, crossing your fingers for availability because you waited so long to book, and trying to schedule your activities while you should be enjoying yourself. It’s your vacation time- use it wisely!

Who do I call with questions, to cancel, etc. once my tour is booked?

After your tour is booked you will receive the provider’s complete contact information and all the details of your tour. Should you have any questions about your activity or need to reschedule or cancel, please call them directly so they may help you as quickly as possible.

When is the best time to book my tour?

The best time to book your tour is now… the earlier, the better. Your vacation time is limited. Why would you wait until you get to Hawaii to research, choose the best date and time, organize schedules with your travel companions, etc.? Our goal is simple: we want to be your ‘one-stop’ Hawaii travel website. That’s why we’ve done all the work for you; so you can start making your Hawaii vacation dreams a reality!

How do I choose a tour/activity?

We understand so many choices can seem overwhelming, but we strive to offer a wide variety of activities for every type of traveler. However, we have carefully handpicked only those adventures we feel highlight all the best Hawaii has to offer- both in terms of experience as well as customer satisfaction. So how do you choose? First, decide which island you’d like to visit by taking our Which Hawaii Island to Visit quiz. Second, ask yourself how you’d like to experience Hawaii- whether that means lounging poolside, parasailing, or both. Then, simply book your adventure, dust off that suitcase, and go.

What's the cancellation policy?

Each tour or activity provider sets their own guidelines for cancellations, and these are outlined in the activity descriptions before you book your adventure.

What's the weather policy?

We could go on at length about the nuances of Hawaii’s weather; simply put, it’s very localized and can change from moment to moment. The best part of this is that you can experience the Aloha State in all its glory- from the sun to misty rainbows to dewy rainforests. Locals have learned to just get out and enjoy the state’s marvels, and your tour will likely run rain or shine. Of course, extreme weather situations may be the exception to this, and your tour provider will inform you of any necessary weather interruptions.

How do I know my purchase/information is secure? / Are there any additional fees?

GuideofUS Hawaii only works with established industry-verified financial transaction processors to ensure both an easy-to-use and highly secure checkout process. Your financial information– like credit card data– never even touches our servers and is always processed over a completely secure connection.

We don’t like hidden fees and we know you don’t, either; that’s why GuideofUS Hawaii will never surprise you with additional charges. However, some of our providers do add charges such as taxes, fees, or fuel charges. These expenses will be made known to you when you book your tour.

EXPERIENCE THRILLING ADVENTURES IN HONOLULU, HAWAII! ★★★★★

We were having a great Winter visit in Hawaii and decided to go here. Winter is definitely the best time to visit Wet n Wild. Pretty much no queues with all rides available. We splurged for the premium deluxe package which included transport, entry, a very good lunch, locker and a good take home towel. There were quite a few locals and plenty of staff, but it wasn't crowded so you could ride whatever you wanted as often as you wanted. You can't bring in food or beverages (except water) but that's fine, there is food available if you don't do the package. We had a lot of fun and it was one of the highlights to our Hawaii visit, much to our surprise.

Wonderful experience! All workers were very professional and I felt safe the entire time. Kim and Ethan were AWESOME tour guides, interacting the entire time, giving good tips, and history of the area! Would recommend for sure! This was my first time ever zip lining-was a bucket list item for me. Would go again with this company in a heartbeat!

Took my two boys (age 11 & 15) to the waterpark last week. Had read the reviews and was a bit skeptical. Park was great! We had a fantastic time. Rides all opened (some staggered) but hardly any wait. Staff friendly. Water clean and clear. Food ok - chips, burgers etc usual for theme parks. Would definitely recommend spending a few hours here with the kids!

Was AMAZING for my daughter's 6th birthday! The guides HOLLY and OLIVIA were incredibly kind, patient and gentle with her and we had a PERFECT tour! I was very nervous about taking her for the first time but she was so excited I had to gamble. REALLY glad I did. Will absolutely come back for all the different experiences!!!

Great fun day out but get the ticket that does it all....entry, drinks & food..we didthis & didn’t need to spend anything else all day. Very safe so elder children can make friends & wonder off on their own with no concerns about them getting lost.good for the adults too & different levels of rides depending on how brave you’re feeling. A great day out for the whole family. A couple of the rides were closed but we were compensated with free towels and free entry on the others.

It’s my husband’s first time to Hawaii and I asked him if he do ziplining and then I found this nighttime ziplining, freefall and s’mores that we had to do. Liv and Liz were awesome and funny. They make it such a fun experience. It wasn’t like the ziplining I had done on Maui. It was different doing it a night vs. during the day. The s’mores was good and fun being around a campfire. Reminded me of camping back home.

Visiting Honolulu Oahu FAQs

Honolulu is the name of a city, and Oahu is the name of the island on which Honolulu is located. The  airport  is located in Honolulu, so all flights to Oahu land in Honolulu. You’ll find most Oahu excursions in Honolulu, Hawaii.

The best time to see whales in Hawaii is from  December  to  May or during the winter months. That’s when the whale migration passes through the islands. You’ll definitely want to book your Oahu whale-watching tour ahead of time, as they tend to sell out quickly.

Honolulu is pretty fun year-round; however, there are usually fewer crowds (and better travel deals) if you go from mid-April  to  June  or  September  to mid-December. Even though this is the shoulder season, there are still tons of things to do in Honolulu for all types of travelers. That’s why I think it’s the best time to go to Honolulu.

It is best to spend at least 3 to 5 days in Oahu in total. You can take one or two day trips from Honolulu to experience the North Shore and other areas of the island that you want. Otherwise, you can enjoy all the Honolulu sightseeing and Hawaii excursions Honolulu offers!

Yes, you can find a hop-on, hop-off Honolulu tour . These Honolulu hop-on, hop-off bus tours take you all over the island and are a fantastic experience if you want to explore all the hidden gems in Oahu!

While you can walk around in Honolulu to explore and go sightseeing at the top sights in the area, you will probably want to go on either the Honolulu or Waikiki excursions conveniently located and offered right in town.

FIVE-STAR ADVENTURE TOURS IN HONOLULU, HI!

What a great way to see the highlights of the beautiful island, a little bit of everything, the ability to sample, authentic Hawaiian coffee, nuts, shave ice, and fresh fruits along with gorgeous views. Cesar was informative and entertaining

He was funny and personable and was more than willing to answer all of our questions about Hawaii. I would highly recommend this company to anyone who wants to have a fun time and see plenty of sights with someone who will make you laugh while traveling.

We thoroughly enjoyed our circle tour of Oahu with Cesar. He is knowledgeable, attentive, and simply a wonderful person! We were fortunate to have a tour to ourselves with our family of four. Our stop at Pearl Harbor was efficient and not too long for the kids. Every stop was wonderful and well planned.

The website is really easy to navigate. Our whole family had fun deciding what activities we wanted to do on our vacation. I'm a bit of a nerd when it comes to planning a trip, so having all the information, prices, and details in one place is a huge deal. If you're going to Hawaii I would highly recommend using TripOrigami to plan your trip.

A first-time guide to Hawai'i, the Big Island

Jul 19, 2024 • 8 min read

fun tours hawaii

Plan your visit to the Big Island with this guide to seasons, costs and experiences. Matt Anderson Photography / Getty Images © Matt Anderson Photography / Getty Images

Hawaii ’s largest island – Hawai'i the Big Island  – is grand in size and scale. Filled with superlative scenery — the world’s most active volcano (Kilauea), some of its newest land (in Puna), the largest mountain when measured from the seafloor (Mauna Loa), and some of the planet’s best night sky star viewing (atop Mauna Kea) — there’s a lot more than just tropical beaches to wow visitors here… though, of course, there are those, too.

This largely rural island in the central Pacific has been inhabited for millennia by proud and self-sufficient communities sustained by land and sea. That ethos — the island takes care of us, so we take care of the island — still thrums through residents’ daily lives. For the visitor that translates to an expectation that you will also treat the land and its people with respect. Dig in by sampling the island’s literal fruits ( including globally recognized Kona coffee ) at abundant farmers markets and farm-to-table restaurants island-wide, frolicking with offshore wildlife including massive mantas at night, volunteering to restore native habitats, and immersing yourself in Hawaiian legends and lore at some of the oldest and most sacred sites in all of Hawaii.

Here's what every first time visitor to Hawai'i needs to know.

Humpback whales breaching the surface of the water near an island

When should I visit Hawai'i Island?

Buffered by surrounding deep seawater, and at a latitude the affords nearly equal parts night and day year-round, the Big Island enjoys relatively little temperature fluctuation throughout the year. At sea level, most days are between 75 and 85ºF, and nights from 65 to 75ºF. However, because of its varied volcanic topography — from sea level to nearly 3 miles up — it’s possible to experience multiple types of weather within the same day at different locales across the island. The eastern or windward side is usually wetter than the dryer western or leeward side. And higher elevation areas are typically cooler, often with afternoon rains. The highest elevation areas can be downright chilly… during storms it’s not unusual to experience snow atop the highest peaks… even in summer.

Though summer (May to November) brings the Pacific hurricane season with the potential for weather curveballs, winter storms are more likely to cancel scheduled boat charters, which is unfortunate because that’s also when migrating humpback whales from Alaska visit to frolic, mate and give birth in the islands’ warm offshore waters.

The island experiences high seasons during North American school holidays: spring (February to April), fall (mid-November) and winter breaks (December and January) and fall break are the priciest times to visit. Budget travelers will benefit from discounted hotel and rental car bookings in the shoulder season (September and October), and well as the low season during the North American summer (June to August). Popular festivals – including the Merrie Monarch hula competition , which brings dancers and vendors from across the islands to Hilo in mid-April, King Kamehameha Day celebrations in North Kohala, and the Kona Coffee Cultural Festival in November – are all worthwhile events to plan a trip around.

A group of hikers head out over a black lava landscape

How much time should I spend on Hawai'i?

Most visitors to the island by cruise ship will spend a day in both Hilo and Kailua-Kona , but that’s far too short to get a sense of what the island has to offer. You’ll need at least four to five days to hit the highlights including Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park , Kona coffee country , northwestern beaches and scenic drives to sites including the southerly Punalu’u Black Sand Beach and Kohala Mountain Road between the northerly towns of Hawi and Waimea. A week or more will afford a deeper dive to lesser-visited areas like the Hamakua Coast and the quaint town of Honaka’a as well as exploration in the more remote reaches of Puna, home to the islands most recently created lava lands.

Is it easy to get to and around Hawai'i Island?

Two airports — one on each side of the island in Hilo and Kona — are the main entry points for visitors. Though both are technically international airports many flights from the US mainland and international destinations route through Honolulu first.

A rental car is a must due to the island’s large size and the fact that the limited public bus primarily services residential areas… unless you plan to book a series of tours where someone else will be doing the driving for you. Waikoloa, the northeastern coastal region home to the bulk of the islands’ resorts, does have shuttles between properties and area shopping centers, but not to and from the airport (Kona International, 25 miles away) or into the town of Kailua-Kona a few miles even further south. Visitors based in either downtown Kona or Hilo will find both places walkable, but neither town is draw enough for most visitors to spend their entire visit there; you’ll still need that rental car to get from Hilo to Volcano or from Kona to coffee country.

A waterfall cascades down into a pool in a vast jungle

Top things to do on Hawai'i Island

A trip to Hawaii Island would not be complete without a visit to Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park . Spanning two volcanoes including the world’s most active ( Kilauea ), it’s often possible to see red hot lava roiling within a summit crater lake if an eruption is present. (Check the national park’s website for current eruption notices and activity as well as the best viewing spots). Most visitors walk the trail from the visitors center to the boardwalk through the steaming Sulfur Banks, meander through the remnants of an old lava tube, and some traverse a longer loop trail along the crater rim. But there are three very worthwhile add-ons if you have the time.

First is a drive down Chain of Craters Road. This 19-mile down and back driving tour includes stops at pit craters, the site of former lava fountains, and the chance to see the state bird, nene. You’ll descend some 4000ft of elevation taking in sweeping vistas to where the lava cliffs meet the sea.

Second, in a pull-off near the bottom of Chain of Craters Rd, is a mile-long hike through an old lava field the Pu’u Loa Petroglyphs , a collection of sacred and mysterious native Hawaiian rock carvings, some over 800 years old.

And, finally, back at elevation, a hike into Kilauea Iki Crater through fern forest and jungle (2–3 hours, 4 miles) is well worth the trip. Not only does it give you a closer look at the terrain and some of the landscape’s more unusual features, it’s also easy to visualize what it would have been like when this crater was filled with a boiling lava lake just 65 years ago – some parts still vent steam.

Other island highlights include the 442-ft cascade of Akaka Falls into verdant Hamakua Coast jungle ( Honamu Goat Dairy on the same road offers free "therapy" with the kids and is well worth the stop); spotting sea turtles basking on the black sands of southerly Punalu’u Beach while eating a fresh malasada (fried, sugar-coated Portuguese-style donut) from the United States’ southernmost bakery; and exploring the upcountry paniolo (Hawaiian cowboy) vibe in Waimea before traversing the sky-high, ethereal and foggy ranchlands along Kohala Mountain Road to the quaint former plantation town of Hawi.

A free diver observes a passing whale shark at an appropriate distance

My favorite thing to do in Hawai'i Island

Hawaii is a world-class destination for marine life viewing and whether you’re a novice snorkeler, experienced diver, fearless adventure seeker, or prefer the dry vantage of a boat, there’s an experience for you off the island’s west side. Numerous dive shops offer what has become a bucket list experience for many visitors: snorkeling (or scuba diving) at night with 10ft-plus manta rays. Lights attract plankton, mantas’ food, and draw in mantas that feast using graceful loops through the water column to filter-feed the tiny creatures within inches of gleeful viewers.

Experienced divers also can head offshore on scuba trips that focus on the plankton themselves. So-called blackwater diving takes the bold one-to-two miles offshore after dark to where the seafloor plummets some 5000ft below. There, they watch migrating zooplankton — and the cast of otherworldly predators (think strange jellyfish and colorful squid) that follow them up from the deep — in the first 50ft below the surface. Thalassophobics (those fearful of deep water) would do well to keep to the mantas that hover above the reef.

Daytime charters can be just as fun. Though the previously popular practice of swimming with resident spinner dolphins is now considered illegal (they sleep during the day and keeping them awake makes them more vulnerable to predators), it’s still possible to spot them and other large marine animals (including endangered resident monk seals, migrating humpback whales, pods of pilot whales and even the occasional whale shark) on dedicated boat charters. Some of these operate zippy former military watercraft that can speed to the first sign of a sighting and put snorkelers within underwater viewing distance of porpoises and — with a trained in-water guide — sharks.

How much money do I need for Hawai'i Island?

There’s no question: Hawai'i is an expensive tourist destination. In addition to the typically high cost of getting here, the island economy — where most materials and goods still have to be imported — also commands higher prices for hotels, tours and dining out. Still, this isn’t the big city (read: Honolulu), and bargains and cost-saving measures can still be found if you know where to look. A tip, though: don’t skimp on experiences if you’re taking a tour — you really do get what you pay for.

Here are a few estimated costs to help you plan your budget:

  • Hostel dorm bunk: $25–50
  • Basic room for two (hostel/hotel): $75–150/$250+
  • Self-catering apartment (including Airbnb): $100–200
  • Rental car per day: $50–100
  • Gallon of (non-CostCo gas*): $4.75
  • Pound of 100% Kona Coffee: $30+
  • Poke bowl: $15
  • Dinner for two: $50+
  • Beer/pint at the bar: $7
  • 2.5-hour manta snorkel experience: $125
  • Entry to Volcanoes National Park: $15/person or $30/private vehicle

*CostCo members can save as much as $1/gallon on gas and many island residents make a point to fill up at the island’s only location north of Kailua-Kona.
