It’s very easy to spot the streets of Girona in Game of Thrones.

After all, with the exception of a few scenes, this Spanish city (about an hour from Barcelona by train) is where they shot all the most epic moments from Arya’s House of Black and White storyline in Season 6, along with some other iconic GoT moments.

So, if you’re keen to step into Braavos, King’s Landing and more for yourself, here is an easy guide to all the Girona Game of Thrones locations, and how to find explore them yourself in a day!

We did this trip on a gorgeous Spring day and had SO much fun. We hope you enjoy geektripping your way through Girona too!

Girona & Game of Thrones: A Brief History

So what’s the big connection between Girona and Game of Thrones anyway? Why is Girona a must-visit for GoT fans?

Well, that’s easy – Girona is Braavos! And a bit of King’s Landing! And Oldtown!

According to this behind the scenes video from the official Game of Thrones YouTube channel, filming took place in Girona for two weeks.

This was the most extensive of all the Spain sets used that season, and involved multiple road closures throughout August and September 2015 ( you can see a full list from the city’s official website here ).

And while according to this article , HBO and Girona were in negotiations to return for Season 7, no such deal ever materialized, and the relationship between Girona and Game of Thrones remained within Season 6 only.

Game of Thrones in Girona: A Full List of Filming Locations!

As previously mentioned, Girona was used to film the majority of the Braavos scenes from Arya’s House of Black and White storyline.

Here are some Game of Thrones locations in Girona that you can’t miss, organized in a logical order that you can walk through them as you travel around Girona. You can scroll to the bottom of this post for a walking map.

Again, for those who are especially keen to geek out, you can actually book a full ‘Game of Thrones in Girona’ tour right here.

Catedral de Girona

This is a great Game of Thrones Girona location to start with, because the stunning Girona Cathedral acts as the real life location of the stairs to the Great Sept.

We see it clearly in Season 6, Episode 6 “Blood of my Blood” when the Tyrell army (along with Jamie and Olenna) come up to stop Margery from doing her walk of atonement (much to the dismay of many people, we’re sure).

This is where the High Sparrow announces the new alliance between the Crown and the Faith, that Tommen was no doubt whipped into.

girona spain game of thrones tour

This is also where Lancel spots/follows that boy in Episode 10 of Season 6.

Carrer de Ferran el Catòlic & Pujada del Rei Marti

From the Cathedral, we’re very close to another recognizable GoT location in Girona.

The intersection of Carrer de Ferran el Catòlic & Pujada del Rei Marti is the street near the Great Sept where see Jamie and the Tyrell army assemble just before Margery is set to do her walk of Atonement in Season 6, Episode 6, “Blood of my Blood”.

girona spain game of thrones tour

Carrer de Ferran el Catòlic

As you proceed down Carrer de Ferran el Catòlic, it might look familiar…

Well, that’s because this is the street where they filmed the Braavos scenes in Season 6 Episode 7 with Arya booking her trip back home to Westeros, you know with her heavy bags of coins, and again we see this in the scene after… um…. you know, her “encounter” with the Waif.

It also appears briefly during the Waif/Arya chase scene in Season 6, Episode 8.

Banys Àrabs de Girona

As you continue down this street, you’ll soon pass one of the most famous attractions in Girona – the Arab Baths!

These beautifully preserved public baths are well worth the entry fee, especially if you’re a Game of Thrones fan frolicking through Girona.

Why? This is the exact bath house that Arya runs through as she is trying to run away from the Waig in the Season 6 Episode 8 chase scene. You’ll recognize it immediately!

girona spain game of thrones tour

Plaça dels Jurats

Further along, you’ll reach the Plaça dels Jurats, a must-see Game of Thrones location in Girona.

This is where that fun rhyming play in Braavos takes place, when Arya is watching because she needs to kill Lady Crane in Season 6 Episode 5 “The Door”, and she’s super upset because her dad is portrayed like a fool, and they do a dramatic recreation of his beheading.

All pretty traumatizing stuff, to be fair.

Arya comes here to watch the play again in Season 6, Episode 6 – remember she’s happily laughing as Joffrey dies, as we all did.

And we see the stage again in Season 6, Episode 8, when Lady Crane says her newly written lines (at Arya’s suggestion) and just before she heads backstage and finds Arya bleeding to death.

girona spain game of thrones tour

Viewpoint at Monestir de Sant Pere de Galligants

Not far from the play setting is another very very memorable Game of Thrones filming location in Girona.

Steps away from the Monestir de Sant Pere de Galligants (more on this GoT location in a bit), you can find the bridge that Arya is standing on, looking wistfully out to the view after she has just booked a trip back to Westeros…

Which is all fine and dandy until the Waif comes disguised as a nun and STABS HER A BUNCH OF TIMES IN THE GUT and throws her in the river.

Oooof. It gets us every time.

girona spain game of thrones tour

Monestir de Sant Pere de Galligants

Ah, as for the former monastery itself (today home to the Archaeology Museum of Catalonia ), make sure to take a look inside because while not a Braavos filming location, it’s still a Girona Game of Thrones location to make note of!

That’s because the gorgeous Monestir de Sant Pere de Galligants in Girona was used to portray the Citadel, AKA Maester HQ.

girona spain game of thrones tour

Carrer del Bisbe Josep Cartañà

Close by at the bottom of the steps at Carrer del Bisbe Josep Cartañà is another important GoT filming location in Girona.

This is where we see newly blind Arya in Season 6 Episode 1 “The Red Woman” begging for money before she is attacked by the Waif and they fight…. only to find out she’ll be back to do it again tomorrow, which she does in Season 6 Episode 2 “Home”, when she is fighting the Waig again but this time Jaqen H’Ghar comes and saves her from her beggar lifestyle.

girona spain game of thrones tour

Carrer de la Claveria

Onwards to Carrer de la Claveria, a great street to escape via window!

This is the street just outside of Lady Crane’s home, as seen in Season 6 Episode 8 when Arya jumps out the window to escape from the Waig after discovering Lady Crane has just been killed.

girona spain game of thrones tour

Carrer de l’Escola Pia

At this intersection, you’ll find a narrow alley known as Carrer de l’Escola Pia.

Arya runs down this narrow alley during that terrifying chase scene with the Waig in Season 6 Episode 8.

The Steps of Sant Martí

Continue onwards in the direction of the beautiful catholic church of Sant Martí Sacosta and you’ll uncover yet another instantly recognizable Game of Thrones location in Girona.

The stairs you see in front of the church are the stairs that Arya falls down when running from the Waig in Season 6 Episode 8, leaving a trail of bloody handprints.

girona spain game of thrones tour

Carrer de Sant Llorenç in Girona

Lastly, this is the (actually really beautiful) little alleyway with stairs that we see Arya walking down during the chase, after she’s been badly hurt by the fall in the stairs, leaving a trail of bloody handprints for the Waig.

This is the scene we see just before she lures the Waig into that dark room and blows out the candles.

BONUS: Where to Find Game of Thrones Ice Cream in Girona

Rocambolesc Gelateria is one of the best ice cream spots in Girona, and is a must-visit for any Game of Thrones fan for one simple reason: they have a Jamie Lannister inspired ice cream!

Yup – it’s blood orange and mango ice cream shaped just like Jamie’s golden hand (or “mano dorada” as they call it at the shop).

So, make sure to visit this shop after you complete your own Girona Game of Thrones walking tour. You’ll have earned your treat.

They even have some Lannister swag on display that they were gifted by the Game of Thrones crew:

DIY Girona Game of Thrones Walking Tour

NOTE: Google Maps was limited in terms of the streets we could choose, so definitely take shortcuts between Point D and E, as well as Point E to F. There are definitely gardens and nice places to cut through here.

Also, do not take the location pins as the exact points of each location! These pins are simply anchored to the street names, but if you follow the walking route, you should see all the Girona Game of Thrones locations we discussed above. Do note that some locations aren’t marked as “stops” on the walking route even though we pass them – that’s just because Google Maps limits the number of stops you can make.

Girona Game of Thrones Filming Locations

Experience Girona Game of Thrones like never before; wander through the picturesque medieval city while uncovering filming secrets from the epic series.

girona spain game of thrones tour

Hi, we’re Timon & Filipa!

We travel across Spain in our motorhome, Speedy, and update TravelSpain24 with fresh content, practical tips, and personal stories from the road. Our goal is to help you experience Spain beyond the typical tourist trails.

Everyone knows that the darkly dramatic Game of Thrones was filmed in Croatia and Ireland, but did you know that Girona also played a starring role in this popular drama? I took a self-guided tour of this lovely Spanish city’s Old Town when I visited Girona. As expected, I saw loads of landmarks and features I recognized from Game of Thrones. But I also got to experience one of Spain’s most underrated destinations along the way.

So, which season of Game of Thrones was shot in Girona? And how many filming locations does the city have? Read on for everything you need to know about the perfect Girona Game of Thrones self-guided tour.

Game of Thrones Locations and Route in Girona

Here’s a handy map showing you where they all are to help you get a visual on Girona’s Game of Thrones filming locations.

If you want to explore the locations but only have a day in the city, you’re in luck, as the whole route only takes 2-3 hours to complete – depending on how many photos you take, of course. (And, if you’re anything like me, you’ll want to take plenty of pictures to remember your visit!)

Girona Self-Guided Walking Tour

Parking place Girona Old Town

If you’re arriving in Girona by car, you’ll need to find somewhere to park before you begin your tour. I found a great parking spot close to the start of the route that’s safe and free to use. I definitely recommend parking there if you can.

If you’re not driving, you can take the train to Girona from the nearby city of Barcelona – it takes less than 40 minutes to make the 100 km trip. If you’re unfamiliar with the Catalan capital, you can check out if Barcelona is worth including in your vacation here .

As you enter the city of Girona, you’ll get a first glimpse of the impressive medieval center. As you can see from these photos, it’s gorgeous. I couldn’t wait to get out of the car and start exploring the narrow streets of this overlooked Spanish gem.

1. Streets of Braavos / Bishop José Cartañà Street

Arya Stark begging in Streets of Braavos

One of the most well-known Game of Thrones locations in Girona is found at Bishop José Cartañà Street. It features heavily in the first episode of season six, and if you’re scratching your chin trying to work out the plot from that episode, let me help you out.

As you can see in the photos, I’m sitting in exactly the same place as Arya Stark . In this episode, Arya is blinded by Jaqen H’ghar as a punishment for taking a life that he claimed belonged to the Many-Faced God, and she is forced to beg on the streets of Braavos. I got chills sitting here imagining how it would have felt to be Arya forced into such a vulnerable situation. I was glad to move on to the next location, which happens to be Girona’s most well-known landmark – its huge cathedral.

2. Great Sept of Baelor / Cathedral of Girona

Great Sept of Baelor Girona

Girona’s majestic cathedral played a memorable part in the show as Kings Landing’s Great Sept of Baelor. This was where King Tommen Baratheon’s wife, Queen Margaery, was about to take a walk of atonement through the crowd-lined streets of Braavos. However, thanks to the timely arrival of Jaime Lannister and a whole host of troops, Margaery’s humiliation was spared.

Looking up the stairs towards the gothic cathedral – parts of which date back to the 11th century – you can recognize the facade immediately. However, if you stand here , at the top of the stairs looking away from the cathedral, it’s an entirely different story.

In Kings Landing, the Great Sept overlooked the ocean, with far-reaching views towards the craggy edge of the island. But in Girona, the cathedral is fronted by a small plaza lined with tall, narrow houses. I was certainly impressed by the quality of CGI when I saw the difference between the show and reality!

I think Girona Cathedral is the best place on the self-guided tour for snapping some pictures, as it’s so naturally photogenic. Plus, I was lucky enough to visit when the weather was great – and those blue skies really emphasized the beauty of the cathedral’s exterior.

3. Braavos Port Market / Ferran el Catòlic Street & Archaeological Walk

Braavos Port Market Girona

Another important Game of Thrones location is the bustling Braavos Port Market, which was filmed on Ferran el Catòlic Street , part of Girona’s Archaeological Walk. It’s here we see Arya Stark trying to find a way out of Braavos, making her way through the market to locate someone willing to help her.

In contrast to the busy chaos we see in the Game of Thrones marketplace, the real Ferran el Catòlic Street is a much more sedate part of the city despite still being super close to the Cathedral. It’s also – in my opinion – one of the prettier locations used in the show. I stopped for a break on the stairs here (from inside the Arab Baths), soaking up the sounds of the city.

4. Baths of Braavos / Banos Arabes (Arab Baths)

Arya in Arab Baths Game of Thrones Girona

Girona’s Baños Arabes, or Arab Baths, are a fascinating place to visit in their own right. They date back to the 1100s and have been owned at various times by doctors and nuns, and they were also a ritual bath – or mikveh – for Girona’s Jewish population.

In Game of Thrones, the Braavos Baths serve as a backdrop for Arya, who the Waif is pursuing in episode 8 of season 6. After being chased through the Baths and catacombs, Arya comes out victorious, killing the Waif with ‘Needle,’ the tiny sword gifted by her brother, Jon Snow.

The Arab Baths are a super atmospheric location and one of the more unusual spaces in Girona’s Old Town. They’re pretty easy to find , and you can explore them for a bargain sum of €3. Although the baths are small, they’re really well preserved, and I recommend taking the time to visit.

5. The Theatre of Braavos / Plaça dels Jurats

GoT - The Theatre of Braavos - Plaça dels Jurats Girona

Who can forget when Arya visits the Theatre of Braavos to watch a play depicting the lives of the Lannister family? She’s been sent to kill Lady Crane, an actress playing the part of Cersei Lannister. But the play hits a bit too close to home when it recreates the gruesome death of Arya’s father, Ned Stark.

In the case of life imitating art, the small square used as the Theatre of Braavos is now also the location of an occasional theatre in Girona.

This sunny square is another great spot to take a break while exploring Girona, perching on the long wall, and imagining yourself in an episode of Game of Thrones. I also got some photos of the Braavos Bridge from Placa dels Jurats – more about that next.

6. Braavos Bridge / Galligants Bridge

Arya watching Titan on the Braavos Bridge

Girona’s Galligants Bridge was used to depict the Braavos Bridge in Game of Thrones.

In the show, a mighty river flows beneath the bridge, which Arya throws herself into to escape the Waif. However, a touch of CGI magic was required to create that river – in reality, it’s completely dry. Also digitally added was a huge statue Arya gazes towards as she stands on the Braavos Bridge.

Despite all the enhancements, it’s great to visit the bridge, which makes for a quality photo opportunity – I found it a really attractive part of the tour.

7. King’s Landing Cloister & The Library of Oldtown / Sant Pere de Galligants Cloister

Samwell Tarly The Library of Oldtown Girona GoT

The Library of Oldtown, filmed on location in Sant Pere de Galligants Cloister , was particularly important to the character Samwell Tarly – best friend of Jon Snow. Always drawn to knowledge, Samwell would use the gigantic library to help prepare him as a maester. Interestingly, Sant Pere has a double role in Game of Thrones – it also features as the King’s Landing Cloister.

Although Sant Pere de Galligants isn’t a highly decorative building, I found it easy to recognize from the show, and the sheer scale of it is really impressive. As you’ll see from my photo, it’s low-lit and instantly identifiable as a religious building. There’s a lovely atmosphere in here, and it’s well worth the €6 entry fee to take a look around.

8. Braavos Market / Ascent of Sant Domènec

Braavos Market Arya falls downstairs

If you happen to be strolling up the stairs of Pujada de Sant Domenec and think you recognize the ornate green door at the top, you’re right – this is another Game of Thrones location.

This is where Arya Stark, trying to escape the Waif in episode 8, jumps down from a ledge into the heart of a marketplace but loses her footing and knocks over a box of oranges. Quick to recover, Arya jumps back up, and the chase continues.

This scene really sticks in my mind for some reason, so I was pleased to see this location. There’s now a restaurant halfway up the long staircase leading to the doorway, which is perfect for a relaxed cup of coffee as you contemplate this pivotal Girona Game of Thrones spot.

9. Streets of Braavos during Arya’s Escape / Old Quarter Girona

Streets of Braavos during Arya's Escape

You could lose days if you tried to identify every Old Town street you see when Arya’s running away from her would-be captor, the Waif. But the easiest street to find is La Rambla de la Llibertat , one of the main thoroughfares running adjacent to Girona’s River Onyar.

Also featured in the show is the narrow, cobbled street where you can see me standing – I made the most of the shade, enjoying a few minutes of respite from Girona’s hot and sunny weather. I certainly enjoyed it a lot more than Arya would have when the Waif was pursuing her!

10. Jaime Lannister’s hand, Game of Thrones icecream

Rocambolesc Ice cream shop

The final stop on your Girona Game of Thrones self-guided tour may not strictly be a filming location, but you’ll be ready for a little refreshment at this point.

Rocambolesc is an ice cream shop on the other side of the river from most of the filming locations. Take a walk across the crisscrossed red metal bridge of Pont de les Peixateries Velles, taking in the colorful ‘hanging houses’ as you go. You’ll find Rocambolesc in an unassuming shop just around the corner.

Why’s it so special, you ask? Well, notable local chef – and former world’s best pastry chef – Jordi Roca created a blood orange and mango ice cream in the shape of Jaime Lannister’s false hand, and it has been crazily popular ever since. It was still available when I visited in May 2023, and the delicious ice costs €5.50 – it’s a fun way to end your tour.

Game of Thrones Walking Tours in Girona

If you’re not sure about a self-guided tour and you’d rather discover Girona’s links to Game of Thrones with an expert guide, there are some great options around.

You’ll be guaranteed not to get lost – which is worth a lot in a city with so many winding streets – and you’ll also likely meet other Game of Thrones enthusiasts who are just as excited to see these locations as you are.

Choose whether to meet in Girona or to join a tour that includes transport from Barcelona – whichever suits you best. Here are my top recommendations for Girona Game of Thrones walking tours .

I loved Game of Thrones when it was on TV, so when I found out Girona was a filming location, I knew I had to go there. I’d had Girona on my must-visit list for a while, but being able to tie in exploring the medieval Old Town with seeing locations from one of my favorite shows gave me the push to finally book a trip. You could consider adding a day trip to Girona from Barcelona if you’d like to explore more of the culturally rich Catalan region.

What I loved during my Girona trip was seeing all these parts of the city I recognized from Game of Thrones while also learning more about a gorgeous Spanish destination that – in my opinion – not enough people visit. I think Girona will carry on growing in popularity thanks to its Game of Thrones links, so the sooner you visit, the better!

Game of Thrones

Popular television series Game of Thrones has chosen many Spanish towns and cities for its filming locations, and last season – its sixth – was no exception, as the Catalan city of Girona played a big role. Visitors can now go on a Game of Thrones tour of Girona to see those all-important film locations in real life.

*Warning, may contain spoilers if you haven’t watched season six.

The Jewish Quarter

Girona’s Jewish Quarter is located in the ancient Força Vella, an imposing fortress built by the Romans that is full of winding alleyways, cobblestone streets and narrow archways – just perfect as the setting for the fictional city of Braavos. In the series, Braavos is the city where Arya Stark goes to the House of Black and White to learn how to become one of the Faceless Men. When Arya becomes blind, she is forced to beg on the streets. Those scenes were actually filmed on the stone steps of Carrer del Bisbe Josep Cartañà – the small alleyway that loops just behind Girona Cathedral. This is also the spot where blind Arya has to learn to fight the Waif.

Girona Cathedral is quite a sight to behold, sitting on a throne 91 stone steps itself. Built between the 11th and 18th centuries, it features the world’s widest Gothic nave, and was perfect for a number of scenes in season six of Game of Thrones . The cathedral plays a big role in a few of the episodes, and doubles up as a couple of different places in the city of King’s Landing. When we see Queen Margaery begin her walk of atonement, she is standing on the steps of the Cathedral. She is interrupted by the army of the House of Tyrell and Jaime Lannister riding up the stairs on horseback (and yes, they did actually have to teach a horse to do that). In the final episode of season six, Girona Cathedral is also shown briefly in the scenes which featured the Great Sept of Baelor exploding.

Plaça dels Jurats

The large plaza to the side of Girona Cathedral, Plaça dels Jurats also features as a popular filming location for another scene in Braavos – when Arya Stark goes to watch the outdoor theatre and sees her family being mocked by the actors. In fact, Plaça dels Jurats is actually used as an outdoor performance space in real life, with many events taking place there over the summer.

Girona’s Arab Baths were built in the style of Medieval Muslim baths and date all the way back to the 12th century. Compared to many old bathhouses, they remain largely intact and make for a fascinating visit. The Arab Baths were the ideal setting for an important scene in Braavos between Arya and the Waif. Having regained her sight and being pursued by the Waif, she tries to escape by ducking inside a bathhouse – a place that will look very familiar to the residents of Girona.

The Sant Domènec stairs

Out of the bathhouse, the chase continues into the local market. Ayra runs into the crowd, trips and tumbles down some stairs into a crate of oranges. The Waif meanwhile, is standing at the top of the stairs, looking down on her, ready to attack once more. This scene was shot on the stairs leading up to the Sant Domènec convent, which was founded in the city of Girona in 1253.

Monastery ofSant Pere de Galligants

The Monastery of Sant Pere de Galligants is a Benedictine Abbey built in the 12th century and is one of Catalonia’s most important Romanesque sites. Today, it houses Catalonia’s Archaeological Museum . The monastery was used as the setting for the Maesters’ citadel in Oldtown, meaning that Girona was Braavos, King’s Landing and Oldtown all at the same time. You can see the inside of the monastery clearly in the scene when Sam, Gilly and the baby first arrive.

Game of Thrones filming locations in Girona

The production company filmed on various locations in the Barri Vell (Old Town). They closed streets, put up high fences so that nobody could see anything, and there was a high secrecy as well as a real blockade in the center. Scenes were shot in a total of 7 different locations, set in 3 places in Westeros and Essos .

 King’s Landing

The most spectacular scenes were filmed on the Cathedral Stairs, where Jamie Lannister climbs on a horse to avoid Margaery Tyrell ‘s walk of shame. The Cathedral is the Great Sept of Baelor , and there are also scenes in the Sobreportes Gate and the street that goes down, Pujada del Rei Martí. The cloister of the Sant Pere de Galligants monastery also makes a brief appearance.

 Braavos

Most of the scenes that were shot in Girona were of Arya Stark fleeing from the Waif , through streets such as Claveria, Sant Llorenç, Escola Pia and the Arab Baths. Not that far away, behind the Catedal Arya is blind and begs for money, and Jaqen H’ghar appears.

Outside the Baths a market was set up, where Arya buys a ticket to leave Braavos by boat. In Plaça dels Jurats Arya attends a burlesque play about the death of King Joffrey and, a little further on on the Galligants Bridge, Arya is stabbed and falls into the “mighty” river.

 Oldtown

The only scene that was filmed in Girona of Oldtown was in the Sant Pere de Galligants monastery, which was the Library . Samwell Tarly arrives there with Eli and his son to study to be the maester of Castle Black .
