What is a safari hat?

What became the first safari hats were introduced in Asia and the Indian subcontinent through the 1800s as a pith helmet , also known as a safari helmet, sun helmet, topee, sola topee or topi.

These lightweight hats were made out of pith (a soft tissue found inside tree trunks) of the Indian sola tree and covered with a white cloth. They were first used by the European military, though they quickly realized that white hats made them an easy target, so started dyeing the white cloth with tea, to give them a distinctive khaki colour.

In the early 1900s, many Europeans in Asia started to were these pith helmets – and variations on them – as sun hats to protect their heads from the tropical sun. (They were even worn indoors by some who believed sunlight could penetrate their roof!) Understanding of the sun’s powers has evolved since then, as has fashion, and safari hats have developed to be an essential piece of kit when spending time outdoors in sunny terrain, whether on a trip taking in the desert, jungle, savanna, or, of course, safari.

And these days safari hats are being worn not just for protection from the sun, but as a fashion statement too, acceptable as an accessory of choice when going outdoors in any situation given.

What makes a great safari hat?

Whilst there’s a time and a place for the traditional pith helmet (fancy dress party, perhaps?), there is much choice for great safari hats around today – the question is, ‘what should I look for in a safari hat?’ We believe there are several things that you need to consider when buying a good safari hat:

The primary reason for wearing a hat on a daily basis – not just on safari – is to provide protection from the sun while you’re out and about. So just how much sun-protection will the hat provide? You might want to consider buying a safari hat with a wide brim so it can cover both your face and your neck and protect you from sunburn.

A waterproof safari hat is a good idea for a couple of reasons. The obvious one is that if it rains whilst you’re on safari and you don’t have shelter your hat can protect you from the rain. The other reason is that non-waterproof safari hats tend to be made out of cotton, which can start to smell a bit after a long day of usage. Buying a waterproof safari hat will make sure you’re protected from sun damage as well as from developing a bad odor.

They say that style and comfort must meet halfway, but if you must choose one over the other you should go for comfort. Why? Simply because you look the best when you feel most comfortable! And when on safari you can sometimes find yourself wearing a hat for the best part of a whole day, so it makes sense to ensure that any safari hat you buy is as comfortable as possible.

Most safari hats are made out of leather, rubber, cotton or man-made fabric. Which one you go for will depend on your personal preference, but make sure you choose a well-made safari hat that will last.  My personal choice is leather because in most cases leather hats will last a lifetime (and grow character) with proper care.

Style is subjective, but it all comes down to how you picture yourself wearing something. Make sure that when you buy a safari hat you really see yourself wearing it and looking at your best.

I've been tempted to order one of these safari hats for several months now: http://www.tagsafari.com/item/h-018_african+safari+felt+hat+zebra_hats I don't know anything about the hat or the company. I'm kind of reluctant to buy a hat that has part of a dead animal on it. I hunt predators but I'm a little less willing to buy a hat knowing some animal was killed just so I can have a hat band of genuine zebra or whatever. Besides, I'd probably put a puggaree on it so the need to have the zebra hat band just isn't there. Any thoughts on this?

Hi I've never purchased from TAG, but they have an excellent reputation on this site and others. Look up Bush Jacket on the lounge here and see what you get. On the hat, I'd get a (more expensive) Akubra Bush Hat: http://www.davidmorgan.com/product_info.php?products_id=80 I owned a wool version, this version is fur felt and will last pretty much forever. Take the leather strap off, and the brass insignia (if it comes with it) and you have a great safari hat. Akubra also has a great reputation around here. I just grabbed the link for David Morgan, there are 3-4 other places to get an Akubra. Later

Hi Doc, I haven't heard from this company either but I would seriously consider any number of Akubra hats. I have a oliver colored Tablelands sold by EA and by Hat's Direct. It has a 3 1/4" bound brimand three vents on each side of the crown. The bush hat described above is another outstandinf candidate as is the Angler from David Morgan.

Doc, I'll take a pic tomorrow and post it. The color is more forest green than Brown-olive. Akubra makes the same hat in Sorrel Tan as well. Check out this url from EA; http://www.everythingaustralian.com.au/displayproduct.asp?page=3 . IF you click on the Tablelands hat it will display both the Brown-olive and Sorrel Tan.

It is hard to capture the colour of the felt with a phone camera, but I think this comes close - olive green for me. The first thing I did was remove the alligator (or whatever it is) hat band and bought a pug from a bloke in Singapore who sells them on eBay. I've enjoyed the hat a lot since I got it - perfect for hiking in just about any weather, I think it would probably stop a bullet if needed too Click to expand...

Practically Family

I always liked the Akubra Safari. Works in the bush but also does not jump out as totally inappropriate in the city. http://www.everythingaustralian.com.au/shopexd.asp?id=17  

I own a Tablelands in the olive and it is a terrific hat. I ordered mine with a 2 3/4 brim back in the day when Akubra would allow minor modifications. I like the bound brim. And yes, it is a stiff felt.

Lean'n'mean

If you're looking for a serious safari hat then the Akubra 'Territory' might be worth a look. They Come in sage green & a beige, which are both traditional safari hat colours. This hat has a 4" brim which offers maximun sun protection & with a little steam you can model both brim & crown to any shape you choose. Remove the cheap bonded leather hat band & replace it with a puggaree & you've got yourself a decent 'Out of Africa' / 'The ghost & the Darkness' type safari hat. A word of warning Doc, the hat in the link you posted doesn't look that good & has a brim only marginally wider than an average fedora, hardly a safari hat.  

That hat is what I have begun wearing as my travel hat in "hot weather places" and I've been very satisfied with it. Although I got mine from orvis.com and its waterproof.

That Dorian at TAG is one hella'va good deal. Those are every bit as tough as an Akubra, and that 's sayin' something.

The question I get asked lots, "How long have you been shaping hats?" It's been a long time. I started shaping my own on a tea kettle at about 11 years old. I never realized where this skill would lead me. I'm very blessed to get to shape hats for so many people.

I grew up in Fruitland, ID and ventured out to ride bulls in the PRCA after graduating college at the University of Idaho. I started a Cattle trucking business in 2007 and added on my hat business soon after in 2010. I always felt like cattle and hats go hand in hand.
