Dr. Jane Goodall, DBE, founder of the Jane Goodall Institute and UN Messenger of Peace, braved the unknown to give the world a remarkable window into humankind’s closest living relatives: chimpanzees. In this hands-on, transportive multimedia exhibition celebrating her extraordinary life and work, visitors will explore Dr. Goodall’s early years through iconic images and a multiscreen experience and venture on an immersive projection of Tanzania’s Gombe Stream National Park where she did her famous behavioral research on chimps. Visitors will also see a life-size hologram of Dr. Goodall, enter a replica of her research tent, and learn about her current role as a leader in community-centered conservation and youth empowerment. Finally, visitors will find out what they can do today to make a positive impact in the world.

“Becoming Jane: The Evolution of Dr. Jane Goodall” was honored as an overall award winner by the American Alliance of Museums (AAM) in June, 2020 . Additionally, the exhibition received the Thea Award for Outstanding Achievement - Museum Exhibit Design, Limited Budget, from the Themed Entertainment Association. The award, which is internationally recognized, celebrates achievement, talent and personal excellence within the themed entertainment industry.

“Becoming Jane” is a partnership with the Jane Goodall Institute and is supported with generous assistance from the Linda K. Berdine Foundation and Dov and Elma Levy.

Explore a hands-on, transportive, multimedia exhibition celebrating the extraordinary life and work of world-renowned conservationist and ethologist Dr. Jane Goodall.

Dr. Jane Goodall, DBE, founder of the Jane Goodall Institute & UN Messenger of Peace, started as an intrepid young woman with a dream to learn about animals in Africa. Dr. Goodall traveled to what is now Tanzania’s Gombe Stream National Park and immersed herself by observing chimpanzees in their natural habitat. Her work studying the lives of chimpanzees in the wild captured the imagination of the world. Rather than seeing the animals as subjects, she came to know them as individuals with personalities and emotions—a notion once rejected by the scientific world, yet now considered revolutionary. Today, in her current role as an activist, mentor and advocate for creating a better world for all life on Earth, she inspires us all. Her story—one of fearless determination, curiosity, the pursuit of knowledge and a passionate love of the natural world—has resonated with generations of people around the globe.

Tough-guy actor and director Clint Eastwood just made a rare appearance.

Eastwood, who turns 94 next month (on May 31), was in good spirits when he was spotted attending an event in his hometown of Carmel-by-the-Sea, California, on March 24, per photos obtained by The Post.

Eastwood was at the local Sunset Cultural Center in Carmel to attend a speaking engagement hosted by renowned conservationist Jane Goodall.

Clint Eastwood, 93, made a rare public appearance at an event sponsored by Jane Goodall. He's working on his next movie, "Juror No. 2."

The bright-eyed icon sat front-and-center at the event, “Reasons for Hope,” and also joined Goodall backstage at the reception along with other VIPs about an hour before the event, where they chatted amiably.

He was accompanied by an assistant.

The event was presented by the Wildlife Conservation Network and was part of Goodall’s “90th Birthday Tour,” according to a photo recently  shared on LinkedIn .

Goodall turned 90 on April 3.

The 93-year-old Eastwood, sporting a bushy white beard, was wearing a blue checkered flannel shirt, gray slacks and sneakers and was absorbed in the talk.

Clint Eastwood as Inspector Harry Callahan in "Dirty Harry" (1971). His career has spanned nearly 70 years in the movies and on television.

Goodall is renowned for her work with primates, so it’s not surprising that Eastwood turned out to hear her speak. He starred opposite Clyde, an orangutan, in the 1978 movie comedy “Every Which Way but Loose.”

He also exposed his children to the wonders of nature by raising them on his ranch in Carmel, surrounded by all sorts of animals.

Eastwood, who served two years as the mayor of Carmel in the mid-1980s, is still going strong in the film business — he’s currently directing and producing the upcoming movie “Juror No. 2,” starring Nicholas Hoult and Toni Collette.

Jane Goodall and Clint Eastwood chatted amiably at a VIP meeting about an hour before Goodall's talk at the Wildlife Conservation Network in Carmel, Calif.

“Juror No. 2” is a courtroom drama where a juror and family man, Justin Kemp (Hoult), starts to realize that he was the one who killed the victim in a case of reckless driving, according to Collider .

Now, he’s put in the position of trying to save the defendant on trial without incriminating himself.

It began shooting last June.

Eastwood’s career spans nearly 70 years in show business.

He’s won four Oscars — two apiece for “Unforgiven” (1993) and “Million Dollar Baby” (2005), both for Best Picture and Best Director — and has been nominated seven more times, including a nod for “American Sniper” (2015) starring Bradley Cooper.

Just Announced: New Events with Dr. Goodall

jane goodall tour

The Jane Goodall Institute of Canada announces its first in-person events with Dr. Jane Goodall in over 2 years

The Jane Goodall Institute of Canada has announced in-person events with iconic naturalist Dr. Jane Goodall. Dr. Goodall will be returning to Canadian soil for the first time since COVID-19 cancelled her 2020 tour plans.

An Evening with Jane Goodall will see Dr. Goodall back on stage inspiring collective action for animals, people, and the environments we share. Known for her inspirational storytelling, Dr. Goodall’s events have been described as “life-changing,” pairing personal anecdotes with illuminating insights and motivational calls to action. For two nights only, Jane will reignite the audience’s sense of purpose and get people talking, thinking, and doing.

“We’re so excited to reconnect Dr. Goodall with Canadian audiences,” says Alex Johnson, Joint Interim CEO and Director of Communications for the Jane Goodall Institute of Canada. “Before COVID-19, she travelled 300 days a year. But since lockdowns began, she’s been grounded at her childhood home in Bournemouth, U.K., connecting with audiences virtually. This will be some of her first in-person appearances in over two years, and we’re so honoured she’s chosen Canada.”

In the last year alone, Dr. Goodall has been awarded the Templeton Prize, was a COP-26 Ambassador for the United Nations, appeared on the cover of TIME Magazine, and announced the Trees for Jane project to plant a trillion trees by 2030. The Jane Goodall Act, a historic bill to protect animals under human care, was reintroduced to the Senate last month.

The event schedule is as follows:

June 22, 2022 – Calgary, AB at the Jubilee Theatre June 24, 2022 – Victoria, BC at the Farquhar Auditorium

Early access tickets will go on sale April 19th. General public sales will go on sale April 20th. Tickets are available at janegoodall.ca/events .

All proceeds from ticket sales will go directly to the Jane Goodall Institute of Canada, a charitable organization dedicated to community-centred conservation programs that address the convergence of climate change, biodiversity loss, and environmental inequity.

VIDEO : Celebrated conservationist Jane Goodall speaks to 7.30

jane goodall tour

  • X (formerly Twitter)

SARAH FERGUSON, PRESENTER:  Jane Goodall, welcome to 7.30.

DR JANE GOODALL, ENVIRONMENTALIST:  Thank you.

SARAH FERGUSON:  You are coming to Australia soon. A country which has I think the highest recorded biodiversity loss of any continent on Earth. What is your message going to be to Australia?

JANE GOODALL:  My message will be that I have seen so many places where nature has been completely destroyed by human activities. Give that place time and maybe some help, nature will return.

I have met so many people who have worked with animals on the brink of extinction or plants for that matter and because people care, those individuals, those species are being given a second chance.

So, the message in Australia will be, you have done immense harm, but it's not too late. If people get together and work out ways of restoring the environment, restoring species, then hopefully this will happen.

SARAH FERGUSON:  I want to go back to the beginning of your journey, which was, of course, to Africa. In Tanzania, your second trip there, you are living in a tent with your mother, trying unsuccessfully to get close to chimpanzees. Can you tell us what the breakthrough was?

JANE GOODALL:  Well, the breakthrough and it was when I was getting desperate, because I only had money for six months and after four months, as you say, the chimps were still vanishing in the forest when they saw me. But fortunately, one chimpanzee, a male with lovely white hair on his chin and I called him David Greybeard, and he began to lose his fear and he began to let me get a little bit closer.

And on this one never to be forgotten day, when I was walking through the forest, I saw him on a termite mound and he was breaking off pieces of grass and pushing them down into holes in the termite mound, pulling them carefully out, and eating the termites with his lips.

And sometimes he picked leafy twigs and to make them into tools, he had to pick off the leaves on the side branches. So, David Grey Beard was using and making tools to fish for termites and at that time, science had decided humans and only humans were capable of using and making tools.

So, this was the big breakthrough which enabled my sponsor, Lewis Leakey to go to National Geographic and they agreed to continue to fund my research after the six months money ran out.

SARAH FERGUSON:  Science had drawn a very sharp red line between humans and animals, starting with the idea that animals didn't have feelings. Were scientists then receptive to your observations?

JANE GOODALL:  When I went to Gombe, I had not been to college because we couldn't afford it but after I had been with the chimpanzees for about one and a half years, when I had already begun to learn how like us they are in so many ways and their behaviour and so on and then Leakey, my sponsor, told me I had to get a degree. He wanted science to take me seriously.

There was no time for an undergraduate degree. He got me a place in Cambridge University to do a PhD in animal behaviour and I was nervous.

And I got there, and I was told by the professors I had done everything wrong, chimpanzees should have been given numbers not names, that was scientific. I couldn't talk about them having personalities, minds and certainly not emotions because those were unique to humans.

But luckily, when I was a child, I had a wonderful teacher and he taught me that in this respect, these erudite professors were completely wrong and that teacher was my dog, Rusty. You cannot share your life with any animal and not know that we are not the only beings with personalities, minds and emotions.

SARAH FERGUSON:  That science practice of the 1960s that you are talking about, told you not to have empathy with animals, but when you were in Tanzania, did you feel empathy for David Greybeard and the other chimpanzees that you were observing?

JANE GOODALL:  Of course, I have always had empathy for animals and I think one thing that's gone very, very wrong is science saying we should haven't empathy and that means that has led to tremendous cruelty to animals in many spheres and you know, in particular, medical research and of course, we should have empathy.

SARAH FERGUSON:  You persuaded the National Institute of Health in the United States to stop doing experiments on apes. Should we also stop doing experiments on monkeys like macaques or other animals?

JANE GOODALL:  Well, I think it's morally wrong and the great thing is that there are now alternatives to animal experimentation.

The problem is that animal experiments are part of a huge, you know, economic, there are people making their livelihoods out of looking after animals in cages.

There's a whole mechanism that makes money out of testing on animals but there are now so many alternatives that are much cheaper and much more relevant to human health, because even chimpanzees with whom we share 98 per cent of our DNA, even they, although we can infect them with our diseases, they don't respond in the same way.

SARAH FERGUSON:  You've always said you loved animals from the very, very beginning of your life. You did haven't to be taught, you came out loving animals. What is that love?

JANE GOODALL:  Well, it's respect and it's just a feeling of closeness. I mean, I love the different dogs I've had, I've loved the cats, I love my budgerigar, I love my guinea pigs, I love my hamster.

I don't love all the chimpanzees, they're too like humans. Some I think are wonderful, some are really not very nice and we have to remember, we, humans are animals, too and we all know that there are some humans  we love and there are other humans we certainly do not love.

SARAH FERGUSON:  I want to ask you finally about young people because, of course you've seen so much of mankind's degradation. You meet so many young people. How do you stop those young people from being overwhelmed by what's happening to their planet?

JANE GOODALL:  Well, by getting them involved in hands on projects that they choose to help people, to help animals, to help the environment.

And when they get together and they work out what they want to do, and they roll up their sleeves and they take action, then they begin to dare to think about a better future.

So, my mission today, the reason I keep going aged 90, is because if we lose hope, then we become apathetic, we do nothing.

We don't want to bring children into a world where from the very beginning they believe everything is hopeless. We don't want to do that. We must not do that, and I believe we still have a window of time and it's not only me, when if we get together, if we roll up our sleeves, and take action, each of us doing what we feel is important, then there is hope for the future of the planet.

SARAH FERGUSON:  Jane Goodall, thank you for talking about hope and bringing some hope to Australia and for talking to us this evening. Thank you very much.

JANE GOODALL:  Thank you for the opportunity.

In the '60s, Dr Jane Goodall's groundbreaking research on chimpanzees challenged conventional science and redefined our understanding of the primates' behaviour. Now, an environmental and animal rights activist, Dr Jane Goodall is preparing to return to Australia for a speaking tour at the end of next month.
