BEST OPTION: How To Get From Puerto Princesa To El Nido, Palawan

The quickest and best option for traveling from Puerto Princesa to El Nido is to take a private taxi or a van.

Here’s a summary of your options:

Here are full instructions for how to travel from Puerto Princesa to El Nido by each of these transport options.

Option 1: Puerto Princesa To El Nido: Flight

Puerto Princesa Airport, Palawan

It’s not possible to take direct flights from Puerto Princesa to El Nido. This means that if you want to fly Puerto Princesa El Nido Palawan, you have to take at least two flights. This involves either flying via Manila or Cebu.

By the time you take two flights, it doesn’t really save any time and usually costs more than traveling overland.

For this reason, I don’t recommend you take a Puerto Princesa to El Nido flight.

If you really want to fly, there are flights with AirAsia, Cebu Pacific and Philippine Airlines out of Puerto Princesa. You then need to connect with an Air Swift flight to El Nido.

This will take at least 4.5 hours of flying and then you need to factor in time to get to and from airports, check-in, go through security, etc.

These depart often in the morning with a few choices in the afternoon and early evening as well. They only take about five hours, and there are many providers of this service. Ticket prices start at ₱670.

Vans have different pick-up points depending on the company. You can be picked up at the airport by some or the Centro Transport Terminal. The Puerto Princesa to El Nido distance isn’t far, and this is an easy journey to make overland whether you choose to take a bus, van, taxi or hire car. I don’t recommend you fly.

How to Get to El Nido From Puerto Princesa (Palawan, Philippines)

Located at the furthest end of Palawan island, working out how to get to El Nido can prove a little tricky, however, it is this remoteness that can help to make it so desirable.

Over the years, the transport system has improved greatly, and it is now much easier to get to than it has ever been, with many options available for determined travelers hell-bent on getting to paradise.

Most people heading to this part of the island will be starting their journey from Palawan’s main city of Puerto Princesa to El Nido, located 230km away, but this is not the only option available.

Traveling by plane is by far the most expensive choice when deciding how to go to El Nido Palawan, but it will also get you there in a fraction of the time (and effort) than the other options.

Flights from the city of Manila will only take you around an hour compared to around a day of traveling if you flew to Puerto Princesa and then took a bus. This speed, however, comes at a price.

The airport in El Nido is located just 4km from the center of town, so easily accessible. When you land you will find plenty of tricycle drivers sitting waiting, ready to take you the rest of the way. There is also a chance that your hotel will be able to organize transport for you.

One of your best options of how to get to El Nido is to go with Air Swift, a company that offers daily flights to El Nido from Manila. You will travel on a small 50 seater aircraft on a journey that should only take you around 55 minutes. With around 4 flights daily, you should be able to match it up with your flight to Manila with relative ease.

Philippines airport plane

Air Swift also offers daily flights to and from Cebu if this is where you are traveling from.

Another option of how to go to El Nido Palawan is the company of SEAIR, which has flights on Mondays, Wednesdays and Sundays. Alternatively, Island Transvoyager makes the journey, with two daily, direct flights. This option is often the most expensive.

Lastly, Cebu Pacific is probably the most popular airline in the Philippines but they don’t have flights to El Nido. So you’ll be flying from Manila to Puerto Princesa and then needing to figure out a way from there which can be another flight or by another method which we will discuss below.

Getting to El Nido yourself by car or motorbike for many can be the best option. You have the freedom to leave and stop when you want, make detours and it can be great fun.

There are many shops in Puerto Princesa that offer rental options at a reasonable price, plus it has the added benefit of allowing you a form of transport when you get there.

Be aware, however, that with driving in some foreign countries, there are risks involved. For a start, the roads can be covered in potholes, cracks, and unfinished shoulders. As long as you don’t rush and are sensible, then renting a car or motorbike can be a good option when looking into how to get to El Nido.

If you don’t feel up to the challenge of the roads by yourself, another alternative is taking the bus. This way, you’ll be able to fully appreciate the scenery as you travel from Peurto Princesa to El Nido, and also hang out with some of the locals or other travelers.

There are various different companies that make the journey from Puerto Princesa to El Nido, and some are certainly better than others. It’s not much fun sitting on a crowded bus without any air con for 6 to 8 hours!

The two main companies are Roro Bus and Cherry Bus , both of which leave from the San Jose Bus Terminal, which is 7km away from the airport.

This is one of the cheapest ways to get to El Nido, but is also one of the longest and most uncomfortable, with buses running every 2 hours.

Needing to get a ticket sooner rather than later?

You can check bus times and purchase your ticket in advance! Trust me, it’s so much easier to know you have your ticket, especially in the Philippines. It’s not easy to purchase tickets on the ground unless you personally show up at the bus stations which eats into your travels!

Puerto Princesa to El Nido Bus Ticket: Check Prices and Times Here

For tourists traveling from Puerto Princesa to El Nido, this is likely the most popular option of how to get to El Nido, and you’ll likely be asked by a van driver if you need a lift as soon as you step off the plane. Usually, even if the van has a set departure time, the driver will wait until the van is completely full before setting off.

Sometimes this will mean waiting even until the next flight comes into the airport which can be a bit frustrating. The two main companies that offer this service are Eulen Joy and Lexus Shuttle , and if you are traveling as a group, you could also look into hiring a private van.

Stretch out your sea legs and travel to El Nido by boat, which departs from Coron. For many, this may not be the first choice due to the length of the boat ride, but for those that love the open water, it could be an interesting choice.

There are four different options to choose from when deciding how to go to El Nido, Palawan; the regular ferry, the fastcraft, a private boat or a passenger/cargo ship, all of which have different prices and departure times.

Remember this is Filipino time, just be aware that the boats never leave when they say they will! If you opt for the regular ferry, the Bunso company runs every day of the week in the morning.

Philippines Palawan lagoon

The MBCA Jessabel 2 company only leaves on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays first thing in the morning.  The fast ferry leaves even earlier at 12 noon from Coron daily, a good option if you don’t have much time for travel.

The passenger and cargo ship only leaves once a week from each side, on a Monday from Coron and Wednesday from El Nido first thing in the morning. This is the cheapest option of how to get to El Nido by boat, but you will have to make sure you plan a little in advance.

Although it is a more expensive option, hiring a private boat will give you the freedom to choose when you travel, plus you can dictate when you want to stop.

Be aware, however, that all these options may be uncomfortable, and all are certainly very long. If you are prone to seasickness, this might be best avoided, especially if the weather is bad. Again, these boat options are if you’re on Coron already or wanting to go to Corno after El Nido.

While I was traveling around Palawan, I found the buses and vans to be the easiest and cheapest options. I will be honest, none of the options are super ideal! They all take time, and can be a bit of a hassle but booking them out ahead of time and not worrying about where and when your ride is coming makes it a bit better.

What to expect when visiting El Nido

El Nido is Palawan Island’s northernmost tip, popular around the world as the gateway to paradise — the Bacuit Archipelago. This group of picture-perfect limestone islands boasts white sand beaches, crystal clear waters, enchanting lagoons, and beautiful underwater.

El Nido’s town centre leaves much to be desired with its mediocre beach, narrow streets, and mostly backpacker and mid-range hostels. But the island-hopping adventures from here are some of the best you will see in the world. Outside town, you should also include in your El Nido itinerary a visit to Nacpan-Calitang Beach and a hike to Taraw Peak.

Puerto Princesa to El Nido by Bus

Cherry Bus: One of the main operators for the Puerto Princesa - El Nido route

Another way to travel from Puerto Princesa to El Nido is by bus. But because buses travel along small provincial roads, the journey takes much longer than it would on a highway. Travel time is 5-6 hours, depending on the number of stops your bus makes along the way.

Unless you want to experience travelling like a local, we don’t really recommend the bus for this route. The narrow roads and their many turns make taking the bus from Puerto Princesa to El Nido less comfortable than the van.

There’s one upside though, you get a better view of the sea with the huge bus windows. That’s something you can look forward to when you’re travelling during the day.

Cherry Bus and Roro Bus* are the 2 main operators for this route. But the last time we checked (January 2023), Roro Bus has not yet resumed its operations since the pandemic.

Ticket prices start from 590 PHP ($10.10) for the non-airconditioned buses, and 760 PHP ($13) for the airconditioned.

Departure and arrival station

Buses used to depart from San Jose Terminal in the town centre.

As of January 2023, though, buses now operate from Irawan Bus Terminal near the Crocodile Farm. This new terminal is 10 km west of the city centre and is about 30 minutes away from Puerto Princesa Airport. A tricycle ride to Irawan costs between 300 PHP ($5.10) and 500 PHP ($8.50).

The buses usually make two stops along the way — in the towns of Roxas and Taytay — where you can buy local food, snacks, and some souvenirs.

You will arrive in El Nido Bus Terminal near Corong Corong Beach. From here, you can take a 10-minute tricycle ride to the town centre for 50 PHP ($0.90). We don’t recommend walking because there are no sidewalks and it’s not safe to walk along the road, particularly at night.

If you want to splurge a little or prefer to travel at night, you can try the Cherry VIP bus, which is the most expensive at 880 PHP ($15). This has recliner seats that are perfect for a night’s rest. It also offers a toilet on board and travels between Puerto Princesa and El Nido without any stops.

Roro Bus from Puerto Princesa to El Nido

Roro bus from El Nido to Puerto Princesa

Roro Bus was definitely cheaper than Cherry Bus, with the economy bus costing just 555 PHP ($9.50). Its buses are also air-conditioned and even have television and WiFi on board. The downside is that its journey to El Nido from Puerto Princesa took much longer, about 8 hours.

The last time we checked (January 2023), this bus operator has not resumed trips yet. You can visit BookAway to see if they are already offering ticket bookings for the Puerto Princesa-El Nido route.

Economy bus tickets from Puerto Princesa to El Nido are the cheapest option at 590 PHP ($10.00), mainly because these buses are non-airconditioned. You can also book a Standard or Tourist bus for 760 PHP ($13.00) if you want more comfort. This bus is air-conditioned and has a television on board.

Some of the van companies operating on this route are JCalbert, Fortwally, Lexxus Shuttle Palawan, Island View Travel and Eulen Joy Express. It’s worth noting that van drivers here are generally skilled and cautious, but some make too many stops making the travel time longer.

Meanwhile, Lexxus Shuttle departs from San Jose Bus Terminal . From the airport, a 15-20 minute tricycle ride to this bus terminal costs 150 PHP ($2.60).

PRO TIP : Planning to go to El Nido straight from your flight? We recommend taking a direct van from the airport. With the bus, you’ll first have to take a taxi to the bus terminal. And upon arrival, you’ll have to wait for the next bus departure, which could be in a few minutes or in a few hours.

Bus terminal is not operating from San Jose anymore. Now a new Bus terminal at Irawan has been inaugurated from 6th Jan 2023.

Thanks for letting us know about this, Debasish. This is very helpful information. We’ve updated the post with the new details so travellers will have the latest information about the newest bus station. Hope you had a great time in Palawan!

Very detailed and informational! This is what we need for our palawan travel by November.

Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment Ivy! Have fun planning your trip!

Yesterday I asked the price of normal cherry bus they told me 250…

Hello Diana, thanks a lot for sharing this info. On the Cherry bus website they still refer too 400-500 php for non-aircon. I reached out to them to ask if this price is still correct and will update the price directly if it changed. Thanks for your comment and safe travels!

Please take down the suggestion of using Bookaway to get a van. They will book through Eulen Joy Express who are a local taxi firm. Look up their reviews online – they are not a good company. We recently had an awful experience with them and don’t seem to be the only ones! They won’t take you directly to your hotel; they stick you in a tricycle at the end of a 5 hour van ride to find your hotel. Not ideal.

I just thought it would be good for people to be aware as Bookaway is a middleman and is not responsible for the quality of service after they’ve booked your travel.

Hi Zac, we’re so sorry to hear you had a bad experience with this trip. El Nido town only allows tricycles and restricts entry from passenger vans and buses due to its small roads. If you would have traveled to El Nido by bus, the same would have happened. Actually an advantage of taking the van is that they drop you off if you stay around Corong Corong beach. Buses will bring you straight to the bus station without dropping you off, even if your hotel is along the road.

As for Eulen Joy company, luckily it is also not the only van option. There are also cheaper options, which we have put on a higher ranking in our table guide. Anyway, I want to thank you for sharing this comment. I now made it more clear in the description that vans won’t drop you in El Nido town. I hope you will have an amazing time in El Nido and wishing you safe travels!

El Nido is a town in the northern part of Palawan which encompasses 45 islands in Bacuit Bay. It is popular for white sand beaches, snorkeling and diving sites, and steep karst cliffs. Although famous, reaching this tropical paradise can be quite a challenge to travelers because of its remoteness.

land travel from puerto princesa to el nido

There are several ways to reach El Nido and here are four of them.

  • Direct Flights . El Nido has its own airport (Lio Airport) but its short runway prevents most airlines using relatively big planes to land here. Airswift offers direct flights to El Nido but tickets are expensive (compared to other destinations in the country) most of the time. An off-peak one-way fare is at P5100 (including taxes, a meal in Manila, and welcome snacks El Nido). An additional P200 is collected for 10kg baggage allowance. There are also other companies offering chartered flights but the rate might be a little too much for many travelers.
  • Via Coron . You may also consider flying to Coron. From there, take a Montenegro Fastcraft to El Nido. Travel time: 4 hours. The boat leaves Coron at 12nn and arrives in El Nido at 3:30pm. Fare: P1760.
  • Via San Vicente Airport . San Vicente is the municipality next to El Nido. It has a newly opened airport. From Manila, you can fly from Clark to San Vicente Airport.
  • Via Puerto Princesa Airport . From Manila, there are several cheap flights to Puerto Princesa City, the Palawan capital. From there, there are buses and vans that can take you on a road trip to El Nido. Travel time is five to six hours.

This post focuses on the PUERTO PRINCESA route.

WHAT'S COVERED IN THIS GUIDE?

PUERTO PRINCESA AIRPORT TO EL NIDO BY VAN

This is probably the most popular option among tourists because it’s slightly faster. If you book in advance, the van can pick you up at the airport and take you straight to El Nido in 5-6 hours.

Here are the companies offering this service:

  • Eulen Joy Express Contact No.: +63 915 829 3735 Facebook page
  • Lexxuss Shuttle Contact No.: +63 917 686 1118 Facebook page
  • Fort Wally Travel & Tours Contact No.: +63 917 276 2875 Facebook page
  • DayTripper Palawan Contact Numbers: +63 917 8488755, +63 920 4966975 Email: [email protected] Website: www.daytripperpalawan.com

There are a lot more van companies plying the Puerto Princesa-El Nido route, but the four above are the most prominent.

Travel time is usually 5-6 hours . Based on experience, these vans are fast. That’s both a good thing and a bad thing. I sometimes find myself saying a silent prayer in the middle of the journey. And I’m not even religious!

Fare is usually between P550 and P600 . However, Fort Wally sometimes brings the cost down to P450 when they have a promo. Locals usually get a discount.

Some of these vans don’t leave until they’re full . But it doesn’t take that long these days.

DayTripper charges more . At P875-P975 per trip, DayTripper goes the extra mile by picking up and dropping off passengers in front of their hotel, instead of the terminal. They are also known for their excellent service (with seatbelts!), and they only need 5 passengers to go.

All van journeys stop halfway for a quick restroom and snack break.

PUERTO PRINCESA TO EL NIDO BY BUS

The bus is another option. It’s my preferred option, actually. Buses are more comfortable now than before, more comfortable than the vans (at least in my opinion). Wider legroom, cooler temperature, and just bigger breathing space overall. Haha. The downside: it’s slower, taking 6-7 hours. And there are fewer journeys per day. But if you’re not in a big hurry, it’s a great option.

To travel to El Nido by bus, you must first make your way to San Jose Terminal!

PUERTO PRINCESA AIRPORT TO SAN JOSE TERMINAL

  • Walk to the gate of the airport.
  • Hail a tricycle and ask to be taken to San Jose Terminal. Fare is P120 per ride. Split the cost if you’re a group. Alternatively, you can take a trike+jeepney combo, which is cheaper. But since I’m guessing you have heavy bags in tow, just go straight to the San Jose Terminal.
  • Board a bus to El Nido.

SAN JOSE TERMINAL TO EL NIDO

You have two bus companies to choose from: RoRo Bus and Cherry Bus.

RoRo Bus Ordinary: P290 Airconditioned: P380 Operating hours: 5am-9pm Frequency: Every 2 hours

Cherry Bus Ordinary: P385 Airconditioned: P480 Operating hours: 4am-10pm Frequency: Every 2 hours

Both buses will make several stops along the way to pick up more passengers, the longest will be in Roxas.

The bus will terminate at the station in El Nido. From there, you can take a tricycle to your hotel or resort. Fare is P50.

land travel from puerto princesa to el nido

If you’re on the left side of the van like I was, you’ll have a great view of the sea and other islets playing hide and seek with you as trees cover and reveal them every now and then. It was a fantastic experience having a glimpse of what was in store for us!

Arriving in El Nido

The first thing I noticed was the imposing limestone cliffs surrounding the quiet town. While our driver was helping us with our bags, I was busy falling in love with this giant wall-mountain as though it was etched by the gods. The holes in the wall were not flaws but signs of life as birds flew in and out of them like little children running around at a playground.

land travel from puerto princesa to el nido

As soon as we got our things, we were approached by tricycle drivers who offered to take us to our hotel.

“It has started,” I said as I stared at this giant cliff towering above me. The break that I had always wanted, “It has started.”

We just came back from el nido with fort Wally. While the bus up was late by 2 hours, the trip back was worse. Bus broke down 4 times, replacement bus promised never turned up, AC was turned off and we were towed 5 feet behind another van for about 20km where we almost crashed into the back of. El nido is well worth the trip but avoid fort Wally.

Bea

you mean a shuttle or a bus? or does fortwally have both? @poortraveler, how was the ride? was it uncomfortable and crowded?

The Poor Traveler

Hi Bea, the ride was comfortable and not crowded. 3 people per row. :)

Absolutely avoid Fort Wally.

And Lexus too, who recently had one of their van drivers go over the edge of a cliff because he had been drinking on the job.

I ride with Eulen Joy almost twice a month and never have experienced any problems.

Hi Jason! Thanks for sharing! I should check out Eulen Joy the next time I visit El Nido! :)

This route very much depends on your priorities and how much time you have.

Some people don’t mind taking the slower, cheaper route and soaking up the scenery on the way. Whereas others might be in a rush, wanting to head straight into adventure, and don’t have time for the long journey.

Whatever your case, I’m going to provide you with all the information you need on how to get to El Nido from Puerto Princesa including travel times, the different modes of transport, and how much each travel option is going to cost.

PUERTO PRINCESA TO EL NIDO – OVERVIEW

If you don’t have time to go through the entire guide, here are the 3 ways to travel from Puerto Princesa to El Nido:

  • Book a Van to El Nido From Puerto Princesa – Best option, comfortable, inexpensive.
  • Take a Bus From Puerto Princesa to El Nido – Cheapest but longest option.
  • Rent a car in Puerto Princesa and Drive to El Nido – Convenient but pricier option.
  • Fly to El Nido – Most expensive but most convenient option.

Before starting this guide and going through each, I wanted to point out that there is no Puerto Princesa to El Nido ferry.

So if you were looking for a Puerto Princesa to El Nido boat, I’m sorry to disappoint, but you’ll have to pick one of the options above!

Considering how far is Puerto Princesa to El Nido, which is about 270km, or 5 to 6 hours’ drive, all of them are pretty reasonable options.

OPTION 1: PUERTO PRINCESA TO EL NIDO – BY VAN

Traveling by van to El Nido from Puerto Princesa is probably the most popular way to reach North Palawan.

Costing around 900 pesos per person, the El Nido to Puerto Princesa travel time by van is around 5 to 6 hours.

Most travelers choose this option as not only is it cutting down on the travel time, but it’s also a lot more convenient, compared to the unpredictability of the buses.

When you leave the airport at Puerto Princesa, you’re likely to be approached by van drivers wanting to fill their van.

Although convenient as you don’t have to go looking for them, be aware of whose van you’re getting into and the fact they won’t leave until their van is completely full… adding time to your transfer.

My advice to simplify your travel day to El Nido is to book a private online which is hassle-free and reliable for bigger groups.

Alternatively, if you travel alone or with a small group, the best way to get to El Nido is to book a shared van, which is affordable and convenient.

Check out the below Puerto Princesa to El Nido van, which is the best value for money:

If you don’t want to book in advance, you can just turn up at the Puerto Princesa airport terminal and hop on; however , doing this may change the price and travel time I’ve mentioned above.

OPTION 2: BUS FROM PUERTO PRINCESA TO EL NIDO

Although the cheapest option with prices varying from 560 – 750 pesos per person, taking the bus from Puerto Princesa to El Nido is by far the longest mode of transport.

Puerto Princesa To El Nido Travel Time:

The bus from Puerto Princesa to El Nido takes around 6 to 9 hours depending on stops, the weather, and the time of day in which you travel.

You have two bus companies to choose from which are RoRo Bus and Cherry Bus, both of which depart from the San Jose Terminal, located 7 km from the airport.

The buses are generally quite comfortable and are air-conditioned.

They both arrive in El Nido at the El Nido transport terminal. From there you’ll be able to hop on a tricycle or pre-arrange transport to your hotel, hostel, or resort in El Nido.

The BEST Island Hopping trip you can get is the El Nido Tour A !

It includes hotel pickup, lunch, entrance to the lagoon, the environmental fee, and a fun guide to spend the day with!

OPTION 3: RENT A CAR IN PUERTO PRINCESA AIRPORT

Another option to get from Puerto Princesa Airport to El Nido is to rent a car and drive on your own.

Of course, with a car, you’ll also be able to get from El Nido to Puerto Princesa on your way back, and that adds a layer of convenience to your trip.

While this will be more expensive than taking the bus or a van, it’s more convenient, and you can stop on the way whenever you need.

I normally use Discover Cars whenever I travel, but there seems to be limited options in Puerto Princesa.

So in case there is no availability, I recommend contacting private rental car agencies at the airport or in town, such as RENT A CAR Palawan or Rey Car Rental Palawan .

Also, if you’re wondering how many hours from Puerto Princesa to El Nido by car, it’s about 5 hours non-stop, or less than 6 hours with a few stops.

All in all, it’s a great option to get from PPS to El Nido!

Need a place to stay? Lagùn Hotel is conveniently located in the heart of El Nido Town.

Whether you’re here to explore the sights or relax in comfort, Lagùn Hotel offers the best of both worlds.

OPTION 4: PUERTO PRINCESA TO EL NIDO BY PLANE

Without a doubt, the most straightforward, quickest, though expensive form of transport from Puerto Princesa to El Nido is by plane.

Flights from Puerto Princesa to El Nido only last 50 minutes. However, while this was a popular way for how to go from Puerto Princesa to El Nido, flights have apparently stopped after the pandemic.

AirSWIFT used to offer direct flights from Puerto Princesa to El Nido Airport, but they are not available anymore, and they do not plan on reopening this route for now.

Alternatively, if you plan to fly from Manila to El Nido, flights are available, and despite the cost, they’re a good way to reach the town.

I always search and book all of my flights on Skyscanner which is the best online flight directory to find the cheapest and most convenient flights in the Philippines.

• direct flights.

The easiest, fastest, and most expensive (but recommended) way to get to El Nido is one of the direct flights sold by AirSWIFT.

However, the El Nido airport (ENI) is not served internationally, so you’ll first need to fly to one of the big cities in the Philippines — Manila or Cebu — and go to El Nido from there.

You can shop for flights to the Philippines at Skyscanner.

AirSWIFT is a boutique airline that owns and runs the El Nido airport as a private airport, so it’s the only airline company you can fly with to get there.

It’s a bit strange how that works, and the monopoly does drive up the prices, but in this case at least it simplifies things!

(Tip: Sit on the left side of the plane if you want the best island views when flying in from Manila!)

The El Nido airport (also called Lio Airport) is not served internationally, so this means you will need to fly there from one of the following domestic airports in the Philippines:

  • Manila – Ninoy Aquino International Airport (MNL) Flight duration is 1h 15m and costs 6,800 PHP ($130 USD)
  • Cebu – Mactan–Cebu International Airport (CEB) Flight duration is 1h 40m and costs 5,650 PHP ($105 USD)
  • Coron – Francisco B. Reyes Airport (USU) Flight duration is 40 minutes and costs 4,000 PHP ($75 USD)
  • Cataclan/Boracay – Godofredo P. Ramos Airport (MPH) Flight duration is 1h 5m and costs 6,150 PHP ($115 USD)
  • Puerto Princesa International Airport (PPS) Flight duration is 40 minutes and costs 2,400 PHP ($45 USD)

The Lio airport is located just 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) from El Nido town, and the drive from the airport to town takes about 20 minutes.

When you arrive at the airport, there will be motor tricycle drivers waiting to transfer you to town, or your hotel can arrange a pickup for you if you ask them.

• Van From Puerto Princesa

The second way to reach El Nido is by taking a van from Puerto Princesa. This is one of the most popular ways to go.

You can reach the Puerto Princesa Airport (PPS) by taking a flight from Manila (MNL) or Cebu (CEB).

Vans are waiting at the PPS airport and go daily to EN, or some companies can arrange to pick you up at a hotel in PPS.

From Puerto Princesa, the drive north covers about 270 kilometers (170 miles). The trip takes 5-6 hours by van and costs 875 PHP (~$17) per person.

• Bus From Puerto Princesa

The third option to get to El Nido is to take a bus from Puerto Princesa.

As above, you can reach the Puerto Princesa International Airport (PPS) by taking a flight from Manila (MNL) or Cebu (CEB).

From the PPS airport, the bus terminal is 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) away, so you will need to pay a tricycle driver to transfer you there.

The two bus companies are Cherry Bus and RoRo Bus. The bus drive from Puerto Princesa to EN takes 6-8 hours, and costs 500 PHP (~$10 USD) per person.

I land in Manila and wanted to go to Boracay and El Nido but I’m confused where to start. I’m arriving on Mar 11 late evening so would probably leave to one the island on 12th and my return flight is from Manila on Mar 20 so I prefer to be back on the 19th. I’m assuming I only have time to see 2 island unless I can squeeze another island in close to the other 2

Hi Sandy. Sure, that should be plenty of time to see El Nido and Boracay, but probably too rushed to add a third place. I would do El Nido first since it has more to see and do. And then spend some time relaxing in Boracay before you end back in Manila. Cheers

ESSENTIAL TRAVEL INSURANCE TO TRAVEL TO THE PHILIPPINES

Sanitation in the Philippines is pretty bad. And although there are several outpatient clinics on the different well-known islands, if you have an accident or need hospitalization, it will be necessary to move to Manila or even to another country like Singapore or Thailand where there are high-level international hospitals.

Accidents happen, we get sick, and they may need to call for medical help at any time.

In addition to the fact that the Philippines does not have good sanitation, tourists are charged a lot for an antibiotic prescription or a primary cure. I no longer tell you if you will need to be transferred.

Hiring travel insurance for the Philippines is essential. In addition, it is quite cheap. To give you an idea, insurance that includes 2 weeks in the Philippines will cost around 50 euros per person. This type of insurance includes medical assistance up to 500 thousand euros, transfers, hospitalizations, flights back to your country if necessary, lost luggage, delays, cancellations...

Traveling between Puerto Princesa and El Nido doesn't have to be a puzzle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma. In fact, with the right info at your fingertips, it can be as breezy as the Palawan shorelines.

Whether you're planning a laid-back vacation or a last-minute getaway, understanding your travel options can save you time, money, and stress.

In this post, you can find information on how to travel from El Nido to Puerto Princesa or vice versa, tips for traveling, and other frequently asked questions.

How to Go to Puerto Princesa from El Nido or Vice Versa

There are 4 ways to travel between Puerto Princesa and El Nido: by shared shuttle van, private minivan , bus, and private taxi.

how-to-transfer-between-el-nido-and-puerto-princesa

Ultimately, your choice depends on your priorities and travel style. Each option has advantages, whether you're looking for a cost-effective journey, speed, convenience, or the comfort and luxury of a private ride.

Option 1: Shuttle Vans

  • There are two types of shuttle vans you can book: a shared shuttle van and a private minivan.
  • There are many agencies that offer shuttle van transfers between El Nido and Puerto Princesa. The common and popular ones are Lexxus Shuttle, Fortwally Travel and Tours, and Eulen Joy Express.
  • You can easily find these companies at the El Nido terminal or Puerto Princesa terminal to book and reserve your tickets.
  • Alternatively, you can book hassle-free online tickets in advance. Here are suggested links:

Notes when choosing Shuttle Van Transfer

  • Shuttle van transfers usually take 4-5 hours. However, the shared van transfer cannot guarantee a 4-5-hour trip because it will stop, pick up, and wait for other passengers.
  • If you booked a shared van transfer online , always double-check if the package includes hotel or airport pickup. If pickup is not included, go to the El Nido bus terminal or Puerto Princesa Terminal (san jose terminal) via local tricycle because they will pick you up there.
  • If you booked a private van transfer online , they usually pick you up from your preferred location or hotel and drop you off directly at your hotel. Make sure to indicate your pick-up and drop-off location when booking online.
  • Shuttle vans are typically one-way trips. You will need to reserve another van if you wish to return.
  • For shared van transfers, you may experience less legroom and space for luggage, which might be a concern for those with lots of gear or preferring more comfort. You can check the private minivan or bus option for comfort and wider legroom
  • If you feel uncomfortable driving at high speeds, you can consider taking the bus as an alternative option.

  • 12:30 PM, 2 PM, 6 PM, 6:45 PM, 8 PM
  • Departure Location: El Nido Bus Terminal
  • 5 AM, 7 AM, 9 AM, 11 AM, 6PM

Shuttle Vans Private Transfers Schedule

You can choose your preferred pick-up and drop-off location and time when you check out.

When we went to El Nido and Puerto Princesa, there were 16 of us, so I booked two private shuttle vans to be picked up at 7 AM. There was a delay, but everything went smoothly; the trip took 5 hours, and they dropped us at an eatery for a quick breakfast.

Option 2: Public Bus

There are two bus companies that offer bus transfers between El Nido and Puerto Princesa: Cherry Bus and Roro Bus.

We recommend Cherry Bus due to its modern and comfortable buses. Expect air-conditioning, reclining seats, wider leg room, onboard entertainment and Wi-Fi. This focus on passenger comfort makes Cherry Bus a popular choice.

You check out their Official Facebook page for updated schedules and information. They have morning and night trips.

How to Book Cherry Bus Ticket

  • You can directly buy tickets at their designated office at El Nido bus terminal or Irawan Bus Terminal in Puerto Princesa.

Updated Cherry Bus Terminals:

  • Puerto Princesa - Irawan: Brgy. Irawan, Puerto Princesa City, Palawan

You can choose this bus option if transferring from your hotel to the bus terminal is okay with you. Bus terminals are accessible via tricycles.

Option 3: Private Car or Taxi

This is the most expensive option, potentially costing significantly more than a bus or minivan. It’s ideal for solo travelers or couples. However, taxis are not widely available for travel between El Nido and Puerto Princesa.

Some agencies can arrange private cars at Puerto Princesa Airport but expect to pay 6k to 7k for a one-way private trip.

Check that you have all necessary travel documents before boarding. Make sure you wear comfortable clothes and bring along water and snacks. Be mindful of your belongings when traveling.

How long does the drive between El Nido and Puerto Princesa?

Depending on the flow of traffic, private and shared transfers can take anywhere from 4 to 6 hours, while public transfers take from 6 to 8 hours.

How much is the van from Puerto Princesa to El Nido?

Van transfer usually costs 600 to 700PHP while bus costs 380 to 480PHP.

There shouldn't be any extra fees for the shuttle van and bus transfer. The shuttle van transfer services provided above include a one-way transfer ticket, an English-speaking driver, fuel, and terminal fees. You're welcome to give tips to show gratitude to the driver.

Yes, the shuttle van service and the public bus will have a stopover at an eatery where you can have breakfast, a snack, or dinner, depending on your scheduled trip.

Airswift is the only airline that operates in El Nido. Unfortunately, there are no direct flights between El Nido and Puerto Princesa at the moment. The flight between El Nido and Puerto Princesa stopped operating.

  • Check if there are road construction projects along the way.
  • When traveling, make sure to check the weather forecast.

Blogger’s El Nido trip rant stirs Palawan social media

land travel from puerto princesa to el nido

A casual blogger and first-time visitor to El Nido has sparked a wave of social media upheaval with a post awkwardly describing her initial trip to the popular tourist destination.

“There are five things one should know before you book a trip to Palawan”, travel blogger Chae Won Cha advised her readers. She proceeded with a summary rant of her observations, cautioning travelers to El Nido for instance not to expect fast food chains in their final destination. “I just saw only 1 McDonald’s outlet,” she warned.

The rest of her post harped on the theme of tempering one’s expectations on a Palawan trip. She pointed out the absence of 7-11 convenience stores, or the food delivery service Food Panda, in Puerto Princesa City, which apparently was a surprise to her.

“The most well-known convenience store in the area is Mercury Drug,” she noted.

On a normal day, one who would swear to know Palawan better, or even an aspiring travel blogger, might simply dismiss the commentary as an inane observation from a casual visitor.

But Palaweños were quick to react to the post that had suddenly gone viral. This, significanty, comes in the wake of a seething controversy that cropped up in Coron when two celebrity bloggers posted contents that prompted the provincial government to declare them persona non grata in the rest of Palawan.

Netizens called out the blogger for her lack of research about the island and her awkward commentary.

“You should have done your research before booking a flight and heading to our paradise.. these things that your mentioning are not hidden facts like as if we are trying to deceive the tourist or what.. a little help from Mr. Google could have saved you from the hustle,” one said.

“Mag-research: Learn about Palawan’s destinations, accommodations, and activities. Knowing the best spots like El Nido, Coron, and Puerto Princesa will help you plan an enjoyable trip,” another remarked.

“El Nido is not Manila and Manila is not El Nido. Why are you so attached to your Manila habits? If you’re coming to El Nido, come with a spirit of adventure ready to accept whatever it offers you. Keep an open mind to enjoy it to the fullest,” one netizen commented.

The blogger can be faulted for either not doing basic research about her destination or for being blatantly clueless, which depicts the irony of her social media’s content. Since tripping the Palawan sensitivity wire, she had since taken down her post.

The grudge from the reactions of Palaweños can be traced back to a recent issue involving vlogger and entrepreneur, Rosmar Tan during her group’s visit to Coron where a heated argument emerged, resulting in their declaration as persona non grata, last June 2024.

To be sure, several netizens defended the blogger stating that her observation should be used as pinpoints for the island’s development and openness to criticism.

“Factual naman ang observations nya, we are just being too sensitive,” one netizen pointed out.
