If you aren’t keen to go on an organised tasting tour and have a designated driver willing to stay responsible, you could put together your own tour.

With a seemingly endless list of award-winning wineries to choose from, the best thing is to mix up your list with some of the bigger and known wineries with smaller hidden gems.

You should certainly try to visit Voyager, Leeuwin and/or Vasse Felix Estates.

A few of the very popular breweries in town are Cheeky Monkey, Cowaramup Brewing Company and Brewhouse Margaret River.

Lake Cave is an incredible crystal chamber of underground caves accessed from the floor of a sunken forest surrounded by karri trees. It’s one of the coolest day trips near Margaret River.

A lake inside the cave mirrors the delicate crystal formations that grow from the cave roof. It’s one of the natural wonders of the area that you simply can’t miss.

Lake Cave is the most ‘actively dripping’ cave in the southwest and is also the deepest of the show caves on the Leeuwin-Naturaliste Ridge. 

Above ground, you can enjoy the stunning scenic views from the Lake Cave Deck , a spectacular viewing platform suspended in the treetops over the sunken entry to the cave. 

You must take a fully guided tour through the underground caves and adventure tours depart every 40 minutes starting from 9:20 am with the last tour operating at 4:00pm. 

Mammoth Cave is also nearby, and Jewel Cave is the largest show cave in the state with three massive chambers full of crystals.

Jewel Cave is 25 minutes away from Lake Cave and Mammoth Cave, with Caves Road being the connecting route between them all. Definitely check them out when visiting Margaret River!

Embrace the perfect getaway by taking an entire weekend aboard a houseboat and enjoying the tranquillity of nature along the Blackwood River.

The houseboat is easy to drive and you don’t need a skipper’s licence, just a current regular driver’s licence.

In 1990, the group moved to the South West to be close to the rich soils and rolling green pastures beloved by dairy cattle.

Since then, the family owned company has grown to be one of the region’s most iconic brands known for its delicious gourmet cheeses.

Take a short scenic drive and drop in to sample products and buy some to enjoy with wine from a Margaret River vineyard. 

Located a short drive out of town, stop by the Margaret River Chocolate Company original factory that was opened in 1999.

Also called the Margaret River Chocolate Factory, this remains one of the best things to see in Western Australia with a delectable range of chocolate products with free entry and free tastings.

The factory even has viewing windows to see the products being made. It’s a great place to buy a delicious sweet treat to take home with you! 

Despite the Margaret River region being known for its epic surfing, there are flat water locations in the region which allow for complete newbies to kitesurfing to learn.

Book a discovery or beginner program that includes all your gear and safety equipment and spend 2 hours learning what you need to get started.

For those more experienced, Margaret River offers some great locations to progress or challenge yourself further so bring your gear along and get kiting! 

Pay a visit to Millers Ice Cream Farm Cafe , only a 10-minute drive from Margaret River town centre, and treat yourself to some of the creamiest ice creams of your life.

The ice creamery is located on a farm site with an adventure playground perfect for children and even a bushwalking trail to enjoy.

The ice cream is handmade in Margaret River and in the past, was made from milk that came from the Millers’ own cows.

Now, the Millers have stopped milking and just focus on ice cream. With loads of ice cream flavours to enjoy (including dairy-free), this is just the perfect sweet treat for the family. 

Those on a foodie adventure through Margaret River should definitely add this place to their bucket list.

A bushwalk through Boranup Karri Forest will take you into a stunning and quiet area surrounded with towering Karri trees (some over 60 metres high) and make you feel like you’re in a jungle elsewhere in the world.

The Boranup Forest is also home to shady peppermint trees, wildflowers, orchids and fungi as well as some iconic Australian wildlife like the kookaburra! It’s a gem of the Margaret River area.

Another option for exploring nature is Bramley National Park.

Bramley National Park is a stunning area just north of Margaret River township which has been renamed to Wooditjup National Park in recognition of the Aboriginal heritage of the area. There are lovely walking trails and mountain biking trails here where you can spot local flora and fauna.

Visit Cullen Wines’ Biodynamic Wine Room for a range of experiences including seated tastings, dining and a self-guided biodynamic garden tour.

Cullen Wines is known for its biodynamic viticulture, a philosophy combining the ‘maintenance of sustainable soil fertility and the recognition of the link between plant growth and the rhythms of the cosmos.’

Cullen Wines says that biodynamics means ‘healthy, tasty, nutrient-dense, food grown with natural products and using the planets to grow alive wine and food for you!’ 

Healthy, sustainable, guilt-free wine and fresh food made with local produce? Yes, please. Tours are offered daily but it is recommended that you book reservations in advance.

Those interested in sustainable travel should check this place out, as it’s one of Margaret River’s hidden gems.

Amaze’n Margaret River is home to a 25-year-old, 3 metres high, giant hedge maze, 18 hole mini golf and many other mazes and outdoor puzzles.

Situated on 5 hectares of stunning landscaped gardens, this is a popular spot to spend the day with friends or as a family if you have any children.

There are shaded picnic areas, gas BBQs, table puzzles, a playground and a cafe that sells award-winning scones – everything you need for the perfect day out. 

Transport yourself back to the days of Group Settlement farms by visiting the Old Settlement in Margaret River.

Established in 1977 by members of the local Rotary Club, the little village depicts the beginnings of the Augusta-Margaret River dairy industry in the 1920s.

Here you’ll see what it was like to live in the state during settlement times, with full displays of living conditions together with old artifacts and machinery. The settlement is an interesting site for visitors of all ages! 

From June to December, the Margaret River’s waters are host to 35,000 whales migrating from the Antarctic each year.

If you’re lucky, you can see whales without a whale watching tour. Head to the shore along the Cape to Cape track or from the top of a lighthouse and you might spot some whales breaching in the distance.

Alternatively, you can also go on a whale-watching cruise departing from Augusta, Dunsborough or Busselton throughout the season.

For a very unique experience in the Margaret River region, pick from any of the glassmaking workshops available at the Melting Pot Glass Studio .

You can choose from simply watching a glassmaking demonstration to a hands-on workshop where you can blow your own bauble, create your own glass or enjoy glassmaking tours from 1 hour to 6 hours long! 

The Margaret River region is considered the mecca of mountain biking in Western Australia.

Riders of all abilities can find awesome scenic tracks suited to them. Beginners will enjoy Wadandi Track, a 30km off-road trail crossing historic bridges that once formed part of the railway line to Busselton. Intermediate riders can check out 10 Mile Brook or Boranup Forest.

There is also a plan rolling out with nearly 500km of new trails planned in the south-west so hopefully, by the time you visit, some of these mountain biking trails will be ready to go!

There are also lots of trails in Wooditjup National Park (formerly known as Bramley National Park).

First held in 2008 with only 100 participants, the race is now in its ninth year and holds the titles as Australasia’s biggest MTB multi-stage endurance race with over 1300 competitors.

The event is held over 4 days as riders make their way from Cape Leeuwin through the forest, across beaches, past wineries and finishing at Cape Naturaliste Lighthouse.

The event is fun and friendly and riders often return year after year just to partake in the race in Western Australia.

Only a half an hour drive from town, one of the best places to visit in the Margaret River region in Western Australia is Hamelin Bay.

Famous for its stingrays, Hamelin Bay has a stunning beach with white sand, turquoise waters filled and spectacular cliff walks.

Spend the day in Hamelin Bay swimming, snorkelling, fishing, diving and meeting the local stingrays!

When driving from Margaret River to Hamelin Bay, you’ll pass through the Boranup Forest. Full of wildlife and serene nature, the Boranup Forest is a highlight of Western Australia.

Just 20 minutes south of Hamelin Bay is another amazing Margaret River attraction, the Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse. As Australia’s tallest mainland lighthouse, the Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse is a fun stop for the whole family while driving around Western Australia.

Turn this day trip into a mini road trip through the Boranup Forest and to the lighthouse in addition to Hamelin Bay. It’s a gorgeous corner of Western Australia that makes an easy excursion from Margaret River.

The Margaret River Region has a very long whale-watching season – from June to December!

The best spots are Augusta, Dunsborough, and Busselton. You’ll be able to see humpback whales, southern right whales, and even blue whales as they migrate.

You can see them frolicking and breaching from the shore or on a lookout, but the best way to see them is with a whale-watching tour.

That way you’ll see them up close, while your guide teaches you all about them!

The Indjidup Natural Spa is a not-so-secret spot tucked along the coast of Yallingup. It’s a natural rock pool with a spa-like feel, due to the waves crashing over the rocks.

They’re seasonal waterfalls, so timing is everything. Late winter to early spring is ideal – these are rainy months so the waterfalls will be at their best.

There are two main falls in the region:

Quinninup Falls . This is the most famous one and it’s a bit of a trek, located on the Cape to Cape Track near Wilyabrup. The hike to get there adds to the adventure, making it a rewarding view after a good walk.

Kevill Road Waterfall . This waterfall is relatively easy to access, making it a great little detour for those exploring the region. It’s not as well-known as some other spots, so you might just have it all to yourself.

17) Explore Boranup Forest

The Boranup Forest is known for its towering karri trees, some of the tallest in the country. They create a canopy that feels like a natural cathedral – it’s awe-inspiring. It’s here .

The best thing is that you don’t have to tackle the whole thing in one go. Several popular sections are perfect for a day hike or a short overnighter.

For example, the stretch from Yallingup to Moses Rock is a favourite – the coastal views are out of this world and there’s a good chance of spotting whales when in season. You’d have to arrange pick-up, though.

There are two famous lighthouses in the region – Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse and Cape Naturaliste Lighthouse.

There’s a dedicated viewing platform that gives you an epic vantage point without having to scramble over any rocks. The car park is right nearby, so it’s super easy to access, even if you’re not up for a big hike.

It’s also a fantastic spot for whale watching during the migration season! It can get a bit windy though, so bring layers, especially when visiting in winter.

21) Visit Canal Rocks

Canal Rocks is a series of granite boulders that have eroded over thousands of years, creating a canal-like structure where the waves crash through. It’s located here .

There are wooden boardwalks and viewing platforms where you can see different perspectives of the rock formations and the surrounding ocean.

Some areas can be snorkelled too, but pay attention to the warning signs. Also, make sure to bring sturdy shoes, as some rocks can be slippery and uneven.

The Pines . It’s a network with over 16km of biking trails that goes through a plantation of pine trees. It’s just outside Margaret River town and has options for all skill levels.

Middle Earth . Stretching over 10km, this trail winds through the Boranup Forest with its towering karri trees, providing a magical riding experience. It’s suitable for intermediate riders, offering a mix of climbs, descents, and scenic views.

This is a massive indoor playground designed specifically for kids aged 1 to 12 years old. It’s in the heart of Margaret River town, located here .

The playground has slides, trampolines, crawling tunnels, rings, rope swings, cliffhangers and more! Plus, the dedicated toddler area is next to the café, so you can keep a watchful eye comfortably.

Play sessions last 90 minutes and you don’t have to book online. Everyone is required to wear clean socks in the play area, though. You can bring your own or purchase a pair upon entry.

28) Visit Margaret River Sculpture Park

This is an outdoor gallery set in a natural bushland, showcasing a collection of large-scale sculptures and artworks.

These towns are gems of the South West and are a stone-throw away from Margaret River. They’re perfect for a day trip:

29) Augusta

Augusta is a quieter, more laid-back place compared to the busier Margaret River.

The drive there is absolutely beautiful and just the right duration – 30 minutes of beautiful forests.

Here’s the Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse too, the tallest lighthouse on mainland Australia. The views from there are absolutely incredible.

And don’t miss Jewel Cave, one of the largest show caves in Western Australia. It’s a natural wonder, filled with stunning stalactites, helictites, and other crystal formations.

You can enjoy whale watching from June to September, when Southern Right and Humpback Whales come close to the shore.

30) Pemberton

Pemberton is the place to be if you want more forests. The drive takes 1.5 hours and takes you through lush forests and farmlands.

This town is home to some of the world’s tallest trees, including the majestic karri trees. You can walk along them in Gloucester National Park.

There are lots of hiking trails and mountain bike tracks, too.

Apart from forests, this region also has vineyards producing exceptional Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

These wineries give you a more intimate tasting experience compared to the bustling vineyards of Margaret River.

31) Yallingup

If you prefer the pristine beaches and coastal sights, Yallingup is the place to be.

It’s a 30-minute drive from Margaret River town, with a relaxed vibe focussed on surfing, snorkelling, and hiking.

Yallingup, boasts some of the greatest beaches in the region, with crystal-clear waters and impressive surf breaks. There are more beginner-friendly waves here compared to Margaret River town.

32) Dunsborough

Dunsborough is a charming town with a relaxed coastal vibe. It’s a 40-minute drive from town and it’s the northern gateway to the Margaret River Region.

This town is on the shore of Geographe Bay, renowned for its calm waters and beautiful beaches. You can swim and snorkel in a more sheltered environment compared to the waves of the Indian Ocean.

It’s near the Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park too. So you’ll be able to see some spectacular natural attractions, including the Cape Naturaliste Lighthouse!

When is the best time to visit Margaret River?

The best time to visit Margaret River is summer (December to February). The beaches are at their best, and the warm weather is perfect for outdoor activities like hiking and surfing.

However, it’s also the peak tourist season. Book accommodations and tours well ahead of time and be prepared for crowds and higher prices.

That said, visiting Margaret River is ideal at other times of the year, too:

Autumn (March to May) is perfect for wine enthusiasts. The weather is mild, and the vineyards are busy with the harvest. Food and wine festivals are also in full swing.

Winter (June to August) is the best time to visit if you want to go whale-watching, as Southern Right and Humpback whales migrate along the coast.

Spring (September to November) is when wildflowers bloom and the weather is excellent for hiking and exploring.

Getting there by plane

The nearest airport is in Busselton, a 50-minute drive from Margaret River. It hosts direct flights from Melbourne and closed charter flights.

TransWa has coaches that take you from Perth to Margaret River in ~5 hours, dropping you at the Charles West Avenue stop . It’s the route SW1 East Perth to Augusta and Pemberton.

How many days to stay in Margaret River?

We recommend staying at least 3 to 5 full days in Margaret River. This gives you enough time to explore a lot of what the town has to offer, and explore some nearby spots.

However, if you want to explore more of the region, we’d recommend adding at least 1 day extra per town. For example, 1 day for Yallingup, 1 day for Augusta, etc.

Doing this will allow you to check out 2-3 highlights in each town without rushing too much.

Best places to stay in Margaret River

There are hundreds of places to stay in the Margaret River area, catering to every budget and preference. These are the top ones:

Best stay: Prideau’s of Margaret River . The location is excellent but it doesn’t show in the price! It has something for every budget and options for up to 6 people.

Best budget-friendly stay: Riverview Tourist Park . This campsite is in town as well, with cabins and chalets for up to 6 people.

Best for families and groups:   Banana Pancakes . It’s a cottage at walking distance from town, surrounded by forest. It’s pet-friendly, and sleeps up to 8.

Best caravan park: Margaret River Tourist Park . This caravan park is next to the town centre and has cabins for up to 6 people, as well as powered sites.

Best luxury option:  Olio Bello Lakeside Glamping . It’s a holiday park in Olio Bello’s campgrounds. It offers spa services and guests stay in bungalows with lakefront views, for up to 4 people,

Where to eat in Margaret River?

Margaret River is a foodie adventure!

So, apart from checking out must-stops mentioned in the foodie section (like the Margaret River Brewhouse or the Margaret River Chocolate Company), here are other places to check out in town:

morries ($$) is a must during your visit. The food is delicious, focussed on Australian recipes. Have vegan options, too!

La Scarpetta Trattoria ($$) is where you go if you want some Italian food during your visit.

Swings & Roundabouts ($$) uses local ingredients to make delicious meals. The woodfire pizza is superb!

Willow Grill ($$) has great Australian food, well-sized meals, and cosy vibes.

Settlers Tavern ($$) is a nice joint near the town centre where you can have a meal and/or a few drinks.

The beaches in the Margaret River region are beautiful but can have strong currents and large waves. Swim at patrolled beaches and pay attention to safety signs.

If you’re planning to surf, double-check local conditions and know your own abilities.

Also, remember that this region can get quite busy during peak holiday periods, such as the summer months (December to February) and school holidays.

Accommodation and tours can be booked out, and prices may be higher. So, if you’re visiting during these times, make sure to book well in advance.

Margaret River. Margies. Margs. Call it what you like, but there is no question, it’s a home away from home for most Perthites and probably the number one destination for those of you visiting WA from interstate or overseas.

There’s heaps to choose from; whether it’s the annual holiday with the fam, a girls trip or a last minute romantic getaway.

From the quintessential activities you've almost certainly done already to the hidden gems you're yet to discover, here are 50 of the best things to do in Margaret River, according to someone who actually lives there. Be sure to check them out on your next trip “douth”.

Start your day in Eagle Bay with a stroll on Meelup Beach and a bite to eat at Meelup Farmhouse . 

Fix that appetite with brekky overlooking the bay at the locals' fave spot at the  White Elephant .

Splurge on the ultimate private wine tour with South West Luxury and let someone else take the wheel as you sip through the region's best wine in ultimate comfort. Expensive? A little, but honestly it's worth every penny.

Set off on a bar crawl through the main strip of Margs. Start at  Morries  and take advantage of their two cocktails for $30 happy hour deal between 5pm and 6pm, then grab a tommy taco cocktail (like a tommy's margarita, but packed with taco flavours like coriander, chilli and sour cream) at newbie Rhum Burgandy before ticking Pearl's Bar,  Yonder  and  Rio’s  off your list all in one night—cheers to that!   

Go for a Parisian high tea at Rivendell Winery  and devour fancy French bites from pastry chef  Romain Lassiaille  in a lush garden setting.

Get a good burn at  Skhulpt  pilates.

Roll out a picnic blanket among the vines at LS Merchants in Cowaramup and split a bottle (or two) between friends. If you're lucky you might catch the legends from Normal Van  too—they often park up and sling fried chicken, burgers and other delish comfort food at the cellar door on long weekends and holidays.

One for kids—big and small. Hang about in the treetops and conquer your fear of heights at Forest Adventures South West .

Take a trip down under…ground that is! Take your pick from one of the many caves in the region. Each with its own special features. Lake Cave has an ethereal beauty while Ngilgi plays an important part in the history of the area.

See things from a different perspective. Scenic Helicopters will give you a trip to remember and a totally different viewpoint of Margs.

Get on ya bike! Margaret River is home to some of the state’s top mountain biking routes. Bring your own or hire one from The Hairy Marron . The staff are super helpful if you need tips for your ride, plus they have a cafe so you can grab a post-ride coffee and feed.

Raise a glass at Settlers Tavern with one of the best wine lists in the country. P.S. They make a mighty fine bloody mary as well for the morning after.

Sink into a vintage couch at the Margaret River Bakery and try to take your pick from their menu. Warning: you will need to save room for a sweet treat after the main meal.

Bored? Grab a board. Learn to surf with the Margaret River Surf School . You can’t knock it until you’ve tried it. There’s a reason it has become a way of life down here.

Soup secrets. Get in line early on Mondays and Wednesdays, for ‘soupie’, or the Margaret River Soup Kitchen for those that haven’t discovered its joys yet. Some of the freshest vegan food in town and definitely a community fave.

Tick off a seriously unforgettable multi-course dining experience at Frui Momento , Vasse Felix ,  Voyager Estate or Rustico at Hayshed Hill . 

Sip on some tasty natural drops of vino at Si Vintners . 

Chocoholics will get their fix of bean-to-bar goodness at Gabriel Chocolate or the classic Margaret River Chocolate Company . The very insta-worthy new kid on the (chocolate) block Yallingup Chocolate is also a must-visit.

Indulge in a cheese fest at Yallingup Cheese Company . 

Devour a hot loaf of sourdough fresh from the oven at the famous Yallingup Wood Fired Bread or stay local and grab some bread from Margaret River Wood Fired Bread , which is only a couple minutes south of town.

Fish and chips on the beach can’t be beat. Hooked Up can be found at Surfers Point on select nights, and Squid Lips in town should be your go-to for any lunch or dinner seafood cravings, every day of the week. 

Dumplings, roast duck and deluxe dim sum with sprawling vineyard views. Oh my. Check out Chow's Table .

Learn all about the art of wine at Leeuwin Estate with a food and wine flight. Be sure to check out the gallery downstairs while visiting.

Grab a snorkel and go for a swim in the crystal clear rock pools at the Aquarium—located halfway between the surf breaks at Smiths Beach and the popular Canal Rocks.

Get your dancing shoes on for a boogie at The River . Whether it’s a silent disco or a night of live music, there’s always something cool going down.

Buy literally anything you could ever want at Gracie’s General . It’s got a cafe, post office, groceries, bait and tackle, and a newsagent all in one. P.S. they do amazing brekkie rolls. 

Walk off the carb fest with a stroll through Boranup Forest and take a minute to breathe in the serenity.

Get lost! At A’Mazen Margaret River that is. Let the kids (and kidults) loose in their half hectare hedge maze and set the timer.

Smell as fresh as a daisy by creating your own signature scent with a perfume workshop at Vasse Virgin . Their new store in town is right in the middle of the main shopping strip, so get ready to do some damage. 

Enjoy a dip with a difference at the Injidup natural spa . Enjoy a massage from mother nature in the secluded rock pool. 

Have some beats with your brews at a Sunday sesh at the Brewhouse Margaret River .

Enjoy a stroll in the garden and learn about biodynamic winemaking at Cullen . Of course, it goes without saying you will sample their award winning wine too!

Lighten up with a trip to a lighthouse. Pick from Cape Leeuwin or Cape Naturaliste .

Paddle down the actual Margaret River on a day trip to remember with the Margaret River Discovery Co .

Spend an afternoon filled with hot air and walk away with an exquisite creation from Melting Pot Glass Studio . Or, hit up a pottery spot .

Take a break from wining and dining and indulge in a feast for the eyes at one of the many art galleries in and about town.

Camping for those that don’t do camping. Try a luxe glamping experience at Olio Bello amongst the olive groves.

Rummage amongst the vintage gems at The Flying Wardrobe in nearby Witchcliffe.

Take a walk on the wild side. Park your car, pull on your boots and trek some of the Cape to Cape Track .

Take your shoes off and get the beachy sand between your toes. We personally love seeing the stingrays at Hamelin Bay beach . It’s not a trip to Margs if you don’t head home with a bottle of wine and sand on the car mats.
