Quinninup Falls . This is the most famous one and it’s a bit of a trek, located on the Cape to Cape Track near Wilyabrup. The hike to get there adds to the adventure, making it a rewarding view after a good walk.

Kevill Road Waterfall . This waterfall is relatively easy to access, making it a great little detour for those exploring the region. It’s not as well-known as some other spots, so you might just have it all to yourself.

Getting there by coach

This is the best way to go to Margaret River if you don’t plan on exploring nearby towns, or are travelling solo and don’t want to drive the entire way there.

TransWa has coaches that take you from Perth to Margaret River in ~5 hours, dropping you at the Charles West Avenue stop . It’s the route SW1 East Perth to Augusta and Pemberton.

We recommend staying at least 3 to 5 full days in Margaret River. This gives you enough time to explore a lot of what the town has to offer, and explore some nearby spots.

However, if you want to explore more of the region, we’d recommend adding at least 1 day extra per town. For example, 1 day for Yallingup, 1 day for Augusta, etc.

Doing this will allow you to check out 2-3 highlights in each town without rushing too much.

Lake Cave is an incredible crystal chamber of underground caves accessed from the floor of a sunken forest surrounded by karri trees. It’s one of the coolest day trips near Margaret River.

A lake inside the cave mirrors the delicate crystal formations that grow from the cave roof. It’s one of the natural wonders of the area that you simply can’t miss.

Lake Cave is the most ‘actively dripping’ cave in the southwest and is also the deepest of the show caves on the Leeuwin-Naturaliste Ridge. 

Above ground, you can enjoy the stunning scenic views from the Lake Cave Deck , a spectacular viewing platform suspended in the treetops over the sunken entry to the cave. 

You must take a fully guided tour through the underground caves and adventure tours depart every 40 minutes starting from 9:20 am with the last tour operating at 4:00pm. 

Mammoth Cave is also nearby, and Jewel Cave is the largest show cave in the state with three massive chambers full of crystals.

Jewel Cave is 25 minutes away from Lake Cave and Mammoth Cave, with Caves Road being the connecting route between them all. Definitely check them out when visiting Margaret River!

In 1966, a group of Italian artisan cheesemakers began selling their farmhouse and ricotta cheeses in a small store in Perth. This was the birthplace of the Margaret River Dairy Company.

In 1990, the group moved to the South West to be close to the rich soils and rolling green pastures beloved by dairy cattle.

Since then, the family owned company has grown to be one of the region’s most iconic brands known for its delicious gourmet cheeses.

Take a short scenic drive and drop in to sample products and buy some to enjoy with wine from a Margaret River vineyard. 

Located a short drive out of town, stop by the Margaret River Chocolate Company original factory that was opened in 1999.

Also called the Margaret River Chocolate Factory, this remains one of the best things to see in Western Australia with a delectable range of chocolate products with free entry and free tastings.

The factory even has viewing windows to see the products being made. It’s a great place to buy a delicious sweet treat to take home with you! 

Despite the Margaret River region being known for its epic surfing, there are flat water locations in the region which allow for complete newbies to kitesurfing to learn.

Book a discovery or beginner program that includes all your gear and safety equipment and spend 2 hours learning what you need to get started.

For those more experienced, Margaret River offers some great locations to progress or challenge yourself further so bring your gear along and get kiting! 

Pay a visit to Millers Ice Cream Farm Cafe , only a 10-minute drive from Margaret River town centre, and treat yourself to some of the creamiest ice creams of your life.

The ice creamery is located on a farm site with an adventure playground perfect for children and even a bushwalking trail to enjoy.

The ice cream is handmade in Margaret River and in the past, was made from milk that came from the Millers’ own cows.

Now, the Millers have stopped milking and just focus on ice cream. With loads of ice cream flavours to enjoy (including dairy-free), this is just the perfect sweet treat for the family. 

Those on a foodie adventure through Margaret River should definitely add this place to their bucket list.

A bushwalk through Boranup Karri Forest will take you into a stunning and quiet area surrounded with towering Karri trees (some over 60 metres high) and make you feel like you’re in a jungle elsewhere in the world.

The Boranup Forest is also home to shady peppermint trees, wildflowers, orchids and fungi as well as some iconic Australian wildlife like the kookaburra! It’s a gem of the Margaret River area.

Another option for exploring nature is Bramley National Park.

Bramley National Park is a stunning area just north of Margaret River township which has been renamed to Wooditjup National Park in recognition of the Aboriginal heritage of the area. There are lovely walking trails and mountain biking trails here where you can spot local flora and fauna.

Visit Cullen Wines’ Biodynamic Wine Room for a range of experiences including seated tastings, dining and a self-guided biodynamic garden tour.

Cullen Wines is known for its biodynamic viticulture, a philosophy combining the ‘maintenance of sustainable soil fertility and the recognition of the link between plant growth and the rhythms of the cosmos.’

Cullen Wines says that biodynamics means ‘healthy, tasty, nutrient-dense, food grown with natural products and using the planets to grow alive wine and food for you!’ 

Healthy, sustainable, guilt-free wine and fresh food made with local produce? Yes, please. Tours are offered daily but it is recommended that you book reservations in advance.

Those interested in sustainable travel should check this place out, as it’s one of Margaret River’s hidden gems.

Amaze’n Margaret River is home to a 25-year-old, 3 metres high, giant hedge maze, 18 hole mini golf and many other mazes and outdoor puzzles.

Situated on 5 hectares of stunning landscaped gardens, this is a popular spot to spend the day with friends or as a family if you have any children.

There are shaded picnic areas, gas BBQs, table puzzles, a playground and a cafe that sells award-winning scones – everything you need for the perfect day out. 

Transport yourself back to the days of Group Settlement farms by visiting the Old Settlement in Margaret River.

Established in 1977 by members of the local Rotary Club, the little village depicts the beginnings of the Augusta-Margaret River dairy industry in the 1920s.

Here you’ll see what it was like to live in the state during settlement times, with full displays of living conditions together with old artifacts and machinery. The settlement is an interesting site for visitors of all ages! 

From June to December, the Margaret River’s waters are host to 35,000 whales migrating from the Antarctic each year.

If you’re lucky, you can see whales without a whale watching tour. Head to the shore along the Cape to Cape track or from the top of a lighthouse and you might spot some whales breaching in the distance.

The Margaret River region is considered the mecca of mountain biking in Western Australia.

Riders of all abilities can find awesome scenic tracks suited to them. Beginners will enjoy Wadandi Track, a 30km off-road trail crossing historic bridges that once formed part of the railway line to Busselton. Intermediate riders can check out 10 Mile Brook or Boranup Forest.

There is also a plan rolling out with nearly 500km of new trails planned in the south-west so hopefully, by the time you visit, some of these mountain biking trails will be ready to go!

There are also lots of trails in Wooditjup National Park (formerly known as Bramley National Park).

First held in 2008 with only 100 participants, the race is now in its ninth year and holds the titles as Australasia’s biggest MTB multi-stage endurance race with over 1300 competitors.

The event is held over 4 days as riders make their way from Cape Leeuwin through the forest, across beaches, past wineries and finishing at Cape Naturaliste Lighthouse.

The event is fun and friendly and riders often return year after year just to partake in the race in Western Australia.

Only a half an hour drive from town, one of the best places to visit in the Margaret River region in Western Australia is Hamelin Bay.

Famous for its stingrays, Hamelin Bay has a stunning beach with white sand, turquoise waters filled and spectacular cliff walks.

Spend the day in Hamelin Bay swimming, snorkelling, fishing, diving and meeting the local stingrays!

When driving from Margaret River to Hamelin Bay, you’ll pass through the Boranup Forest. Full of wildlife and serene nature, the Boranup Forest is a highlight of Western Australia.

Just 20 minutes south of Hamelin Bay is another amazing Margaret River attraction, the Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse. As Australia’s tallest mainland lighthouse, the Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse is a fun stop for the whole family while driving around Western Australia.

Turn this day trip into a mini road trip through the Boranup Forest and to the lighthouse in addition to Hamelin Bay. It’s a gorgeous corner of Western Australia that makes an easy excursion from Margaret River.

Being the tourist hotspot that it is, the infamous Margaret River region doesn’t offer too many affordable options when it comes to accommodation. 

Most visitors on a budget will tend to steer towards caravan parks to set up a tent for a few nights.

If you don’t have your own camping equipment or just don’t like camping, you have a variety of options to choose from between chalets, apartment-style hotels, hotels, houses and resorts in Margaret River. 

If you’re on a campervan trip through the area and are self-sufficient, you can save money by learning about free camping in Western Australia to find a safe and wallet-friendly place to stay. 

There aren’t too many hostel options in Margaret River as most people tend to opt for Airbnbs. However, if you’re a solo traveller, your best bet is to book the Margaret River YHA .

This YHA is conveniently located in the center of Margaret River and is only a few hundred metres from the bus stop and visitor centre. It’s a modern hostel with 4, 6, 8 and 10-bed dorms all with air conditioning (a must in an Aussie summer). 

If you’re travelling as a group and need more affordable accommodation, the best thing to do is to book out a room at RAC Margaret River Nature Park with 5 bunk beds.

The caravan park is located in Bramley National Park providing a tranquil nature experience and only a 2-minute drive from the Margaret River town centre.

The Inn has a rustic feel to it and is very clean and well kept. Facilities on site include a beautiful and tranquil garden, car park, family room, BBQ facilities and restaurant.

Wifi is available in public areas and only in some rooms so be sure to check this when booking.

For great value for money and simple accommodation, book Margaret River Resort for the perfect location in town. 

The Margaret River Hotel, formerly known as Knights Inn, is another popular option, however it is temporarily closed. Check their website for updates!

When it comes to luxury accommodation in Margaret River, you have two options: book out a big beautiful house or go to a resort.

Around town, you’ll find that luxury homes are more popular and plentiful than resorts since Margaret River town is located inland and not on the coast.

Travellers in larger groups or families considering booking a luxury home needn’t look any further than Margaret River Bungalows .

A three-hour drive south of Perth , this accessible wine region has long been a favourite among holidaymakers seeking a beach break or gourmet getaway. While many plan their trip to revolve around wining and dining (and why wouldn’t you), that’s not to say this cruisy little pocket of WA has nothing more to offer.

From kid-friendly cave tours to beautiful surf beaches, award-winning gin distilleries, idyllic country breweries , hidden waterfalls, and even a dedicated chocolate cafe, you’re sure to find more than enough to keep everyone entertained. Read on for 19 of the best things to do in Margaret River.

The youngest wine region in Australia is packed with boutique and progressive wineries producing some of the country’s best expressions of cabernet sauvignon and chardonnay, with innovative and welcoming cellar doors to match, and some inviting winery restaurants too.

1. Glenarty Road, Karridale

The Margaret River region’s founding winery, Vasse Felix is hard to beat. Explore the winery’s history and heritage with a tour of The Vault, which houses every vintage of cabernet sauvignon ever made there, or journey to the future at the winery’s restaurant, which showcases local, seasonal produce in its artful platings of Modern Australian cuisine.

Margaret River’s brewery scene is in full bloom: from bohemian in-town brew houses to bucolic breweries hidden away in the bush, the hills are seemingly alive with hops.

4. Margaret River Brewhouse, Margaret River

Known as much for its impressive food as its beers, Margaret River Brewhouse is a local institution that can seemingly do no wrong.

Locals and out-of-towners alike rave about the red duck leg curry, beer battered Spanish mackerel and free-range chicken wings, all of which are best washed down with one of the many house-brewed beers.

There’s a bohemian-chic vibe to the place, super friendly staff manning the taps, and a small playground for kids too.

5. Rocky Ridge Brewing Co, Busselton

Located just a block from Busselton Jetty, within the former family home of its owners – the Coates family – this taphouse is in a plum spot.

Discover why Rocky Ridge Brewing Co. has amassed a cult following.

Although it’s only been open since 2019 Rocky Ridge Brewing Co has already amassed quite the cult following, and rightfully so: the Coates family is serious about beer, but they’re pretty serious about sustainability too .

Their Jindong brewery is completely off-grid and achieved carbon-neutral status in 2021, and even features a water recycling plant.

Expect an exceptional brew every time at this Busselton taproom.

6. Wild Hop Brewing Company, Yallingup

You’d struggle to find a dreamier setting than that of Wild Hop Brewing Company , nuzzled in the Yallingup hills.

For the best seat in the house, sit on the terrace at Wild Hop Brewing Company.

Bifold doors and floor-to-ceiling windows in almost every direction capitalise on the unblemished views over the surrounding bushland and dam, and there’s a sizable terrace shaded by trees.

Soak up those views by the dam with a cold one.

Nab a table by the water, plant your feet in the grass and knock back a tasting paddle of the house’s batch brews, which are constantly changing.

Gin distilleries

While the Margaret River doesn’t feature half as many gin distilleries as it does wineries and breweries, the few that have set up shop here number among the best in Australia, with a litany of awards to their name.

7. The West Winds Gin Distillery, Cowaramup

Showcasing Australia’s unique botanicals is the overarching raison d’etre at this Margaret River gin distillery. West Winds ’ wide range of gins (seven and counting) feature everything from banksia honey to Davidson plums, native thyme, lemon myrtle, cinnamon myrtle, strawberry gum leaves, sloe berries, sea parsley and even native bush tomatoes, much of which are sourced directly from Indigenous growers. The team’s new distillery and tavern is set to open in Cowaramup by October 2022.

8. Margaret River Distilling Company, Margaret River Town

If graduating from ‘Giniversity’ with honours is on your to-do list then make a beeline for the Margaret River Distilling Company , which was among the first in Australia to produce gin.

9. Gnarabup Beach, Prevelly

Not only is Gnarabup Beach home to a rather enticing arc of bone-white sand, but it also has a cafe that features front-row seats over the action.

10. Injidup Beach, Yallingup

A little off the beaten track, you won’t have to share this stretch of silica with many other souls. Part of the Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park, Injidup is known as a bit of a local haunt for keen surfers, with three different breaks – ‘Car Parks’ is said to be the most consistent, while some argue that ‘Pea Break’ is the best, and ‘The Point’ is one of the region’s few surf breaks that is relatively offshore.

11. Hamelin Bay

This sheltered bay is a bit of an all-rounder, its calm waters are ideal for swimming, snorkelling and fishing. But beyond the more typical draws, Hamelin Bay is also known as a hub for stingrays, which cruise the shallow turquoise water, often within inches of curious spectators.

A welcome yet unexpected surprise for many visitors, Margaret River plays host to more than 100 limestone caves, of which seven are open to the public.

12. Lake Cave

Ethereally beautiful, Lake Cave is as intriguing to explore outside as it is in: you’ll enter through the base of an enormous sinkhole, carpeted with layers of greenery, and wander into an underground wonderland, with ‘floating’ karst formations hovering above a lake.

13. Ngilgi Cave, Yallingup

Unlike many of the other caves in the region, visits to Ngilgi are semi-guided, which means that after learning more about the cave and its place in local history, you’re free to explore at your own pace.

14. Jewel Cave, Augusta

A surreal subterranean space, Jewel Cave is the biggest of its kind open to the public in the state, with three rather gargantuan chambers. Surrounded by Karri forest, the site is beautiful both below and above ground. Fully guided one-hour tours reveal the cave’s geological splendours, from helictites to cave coral, pendulites and some super-sized stalactites.

Looking for something to do in Margaret River in winter? Go chasing waterfalls. These two natural beauties are best viewed in the thick of winter, or after heavy rainfall.

15. Qunninup Falls, Wilyabrup

Among the more challenging to reach, a visit to Qunninup Falls is best attempted by those who are physically fit. It takes around 45 minutes to walk to the falls and almost an hour to walk back, and traverses sand dunes and clifftops blanketed in coastal heathland and wildflowers.

16. Yalgardup Waterfall, Margaret River

Also known as Kevill Road, this easily accessible waterfall is a serene spot to potter around and listen to the soothing white noise produced by the small cascade. Trace the path of this languorous creek to enjoy the leafy setting for a little longer.

This award-winning chocolatier may have outlets in Perth’s CBD and the Swan Valley, but the Margaret River location was its first and the site of its original factory.

18. Margaret River Farmers’ Market, Margaret River town

Pick up a cup of coffee from the Kombi van’s window, peruse the cornucopia of local produce, and snack on a pastry or two as you do the rounds at this award-winning farmers’ market . Held in town every Saturday morning, it’s a shortcut to feeling like a local.

19. Meelup Farmhouse, Eagle Bay

Part restaurant, part hobby farm, this dreamy Dunsborough venue ticks several boxes and is great for families in particular. Savour a wholesome brunch made from hyperlocal ingredients, or enjoy a house-made picnic hamper on the lawn before dropping in to say hi to Meelup Farmhouse’s family of Alpacas, silkie chooks, and highland cow, Lizzie.

Sugarloaf Rock

Sugarloaf Rock draws in visitors with its unusual shape and stunning surrounds. Positioned in the picturesque Cape Naturaliste area, this natural wonder is a haven for explorers and nature enthusiasts alike.

Visit during the day to explore the rockpools and rocky surrounds. Come dusk, Sugarloaf Rock is one of the most popular sunset spots in the region. Either way, Sugarloaf Rock is a photographers dream at any time of the day.

Meelup Regional Park

Another remarkable natural attraction in the Margaret River Region is Meelup Regional Park.

Meelup Beach is a delightful swimming spot popular with families. There are some popular swimming spots along here. Known for its calm waters, facilities include BBQ spots, toilets, and equipment hire for water sports including stand-up paddle boards.

Castle Rock is another must see attraction in Meelup Regional Park. This quieter alternative is characterised by crystal clear waters and the unusual shaped rock that grants the beach its name.

There is a coastal trail connecting Meelup Beach and Castle Rock, which is part of the longer 7km Meelup Reserve Trail. This trail offers scenic views of the small coves and bays in between Eagle Bay and Old Dunsborough. Keep your eyes open for the native quenda bandicoot that frequent this area!

Snorkel the Natural Aquarium  

One of the unique swimming spots in the South West, the Aquarium is a naturally formed sheltered lagoon with crystal clear calm water.

Bring your snorkel and explore the aquatic delights of the lagoon.

This spot is very busy in summer and over school holidays, so come early if you are visiting during this time. A short hike is required to reach the lagoon. For more information on parking and the hike, visit my dedicated guide .

There are no facilities here, so come prepared and please conserve this beautiful spot by taking all your rubbish home with you!

Relaxed Dining at Meelup Farmhouse

Meelup Farmhouse is a restaurant located within a charming hobby farm.

Located near Meelup Beach, this venue has fast become a popular spot thanks to its relaxed Australian dining and gorgeous furry team members, like Lizzie the highland cow. You’ll also find chickens running around in the chicken coop and a llama near the car park. 

You’ll need to reserve a table in advance as this is a popular spot thanks to its relaxed Australian dining experience and aesthetic farmhouse vibes.

Culinary Adventures: Degustation Dining  

Embark on a gastronomic adventure as you delve into the fine dining degustation experiences available in Margaret River.

Voyager Estate is the stand-out option for a memorable experience.

Go Chasing Waterfalls

Did you know Margaret River is home to a waterfall, the stunning Quinninup Falls?

Tucked away on a section of the Cape to Cape track, this 10-metre high waterfall is a spectacular sight, especially after rainfall.

Watch an Outdoor Movie Under the Stars

One of the most memorable attractions in Margaret River is watching an outdoor movie on a warm summers night.

Popular venues include the Cape Mentelle, which transforms into an outdoor cinema from December to February, and the historic Caves House Hotel in Yallingup offering a BYO seating arrangement.

Walk Across Canal Rocks

Canal Rocks is another unique outdoor attraction in the Margaret River region.

The forces of nature have created a canal amidst the rock formations. You can walk between them on the timber walkway spanning across the ocean.

Gastronomic Delights: Cheese & Chocolate Tasting

Is it a coincidence that the Margaret River Chocolate Company is around the corner from the Margaret River Dairy Company… I think not!

Take it as a sign to enjoy both a cheese and chocolate tasting while in the area. If your sweet tooth calls, the Margaret River Nougat Company is also around the corner…

Gabriel Chocolate, located on the same property as House of Cards wines, is another chocolatier in the area offering indulgent treats.

Explore the Coastal Gems in Yallingup 

When exploring the best things to do in Margaret River, a day out in the picturesque town of Yallingup should be on your list. Situated near Dunsborough, this small coastal community is renowned for its family-friendly beach with a sheltered lagoon.

Children will delight in the large nature playground and spacious grassed areas at the top of the beach.

If you work up an appetite, pop into Lagoon Yallingup. Start your day with their morning coffee offerings before diving into a modern, fresh Australian menu rich in local seafood for lunch or dinner.

Further enhancing Yallingup’s charm is the Caves House Hotel, a Margaret River icon offering live music on selected nights, providing the perfect backdrop for vibrant evenings all year round.

Treat Yourself at the Margaret River Bakery

The Margaret River bakery has become a must-do for visitors and locals in town alike.

Located on the main road heading into the centre of Margaret River town, this small European inspired bakery serves up a huge range of delicious bakery treats as well as fresh cooked breakfasts.

The eclectic décor just adds to the vibe here. They are open Monday to Saturday from 7am. On weekends, they get BUSY! Be prepared to queue to order (but the line moves quickly).

Whale Watching Experience

The Margaret River region sees as estimated 35,000 plus whales migrate through its waters between June – November each year.

Head to Point Picquet for one of Margaret River’s best whale watching spots in September. Here will catch a glimpse of humpback whales and quite often, their babies, close to shore.

The lighthouses in the region also make for great whale watching lookouts, or for the most memorable experience, book onto a whale watching cruise to see the whales up close.

Attend a Seasonal Event or Festival

The Margaret River Region has no shortage of events and festivals celebrating the renowned food, wine and art produced in the region.

• Margaret River Pro (April): Margaret River annually hosts this world class surfing event, drawing visitors from across the country to witness the World Surfing League pro’s compete. Join the crowds at the beach to watch surfing legends do their thing in the fabled waves of Margaret River.
• Cabin Fever (July): When it starts getting wintery and cold, what better way than warming up with delicious comfort food, great wine and maybe a fire or two? The annual Cabin Fever Festival gives you a reason to brave the chill and take in one of the curated food and wine events held over a 2-week period in some of the South West’s best restaurants, wineries and producers.
• Margaret River Open Studios (September): Get ready to be creatively inspired! In it’s 11th year, the annual region Open Studios event sees artists across the region open their doors to the community for an inside look into the creative process. Follow the trail of signs leading to the 150+ artist studios that open daily to visitors, or check out the program of workshops and special events.
• CinefestOz (September): The CinefestOz festival brings red carpet events, gala nights, short films, community events and more to the region in September. Over five days there are a range of film experiences at cinemas, wineries, small bars and galleries.
• Fine Vines Festival (October): The wonderful team that bring you Cabin Fever gear up to celebrate Spring with another food and wine orientated 10 day festival in October. Attend one of the many ticketed events, or pop into wineries that aren’t usually open to the public for a tasting and chat to the winemakers.

Stroll the Heart of Margaret River

The main street of Margaret River town is a charming strip of boutiques, cafe’s, restaurants and local shops.

Hit the pavement on Bussell Highway and take in the bustling hub that is the main strip of town.

Check out the Fudge Factory, grab a coffee at Sidekick Cafe, browse the Margaret River Artisan Store and pop into the Visitors Centre for some souvenir shopping.

Meet the Hamelin Bay Stingrays

A worthwhile detour while in Margaret River is a visit to Hamelin Bay to meet the local marine residents.

Hordes of manta rays are known to frequent the shallow shores of Hamelin Bay Beach. Your best chance of seeing them is on a calm day as they glide by.

While they may appear friendly, local authorities ask visitors not to touch these wild creatures.

Wander Through Boranup Forest

A visit to the Boranup Karri Forest is nothing short of magical as you wander amidst giant karri trees, seemingly touching the sky at 60 meters tall.

The dappled sunlight streams through the towering trees, offering moments of tranquil reflection.

The easiest spot to explore is from the Boranup Forest View Point parking area .

From here, take a walk through the forest on the other side of the road. Visitors can also take the scenic gravel road through the middle of the forest (suitable for 2WDs) on Boranup Dr which runs parallel to Caves Road.

Take a Scenic Coastal Hike 

The Margaret River Region is renowned for its stunning coastal hikes.

The most famous of them is the iconic Cape to Cape track, spanning 130 kilometres from Cape Cape Leeuwin to Cape Augusta. I completed this hike over 7 days in 2022, which you can read all about here.

While many choose to complete the entire track, you can tackle small sections of it for a taste of the vivid coastal scenery. My recommendations are;

• Cape Naturaliste to Sugarloaf Rock: This 3.5 kilometre (one way) section of the Cape to Cape is accessible thanks to the wooden boardwalk and sealed pathway along the track. This is a great area for whale spotting around September. 
• Torpedo Trail Yallingup: A short but scenic 3km loop starting from the Yallingup Beach car park. 
• Contos Beach to Bob’s Hollow: Quite possibly the most scenic section of the Cape to Cape, walk along the Conto cliffs along the coast to a small cave at Bob’s Hollow (7km return approx). 

There are also more trails along the coastline from Cape Leeuwin to Dunsborough, including the Meelup trail mentioned above that passes Meelup Beach and Castle Rock.

Marvel at a West Coast Sunset

Unwind at the end of a fruitful day of exploring by witnessing Western Australia’s renowned sunsets in the heart of the Margaret River region.

Grab a picnic rug or blanket and head to one of the many splendid sunset spots available. A few already mentioned in this article include Sugarloaf Rock and Yallingup Beach.

For those closer to Margaret River town, Surfers Point in Prevelly is the local favourite, boasting a large grassy knoll ideal for a laid-back sunset viewing spot.

Visit a Birds of Prey Sanctuary

It wasn’t until a recent visit that I discovered that Margaret River is home to one of Australia’s largest bird of prey sanctuaries at Eagles Heritage .

Dedicated to the care and rehabilitation of injured and orphaned birds, this unique wildlife centre is set amongst the natural bushland in Margaret River.

There are twice daily Birds of Prey Encounters at 11am and 1.30pm ( online bookings are recommended). During your visit, take a self-guided walk to spot some of the eagles, hawks, falcons and owls that call the sanctuary home.

Explore Underground at the Margaret River Caves

Beneath the picturesque landscapes of Margaret River lies a hidden world of limestone caves. With over 100 spectacular formations, they make for a unique attraction in Margaret River and a memorable visit.

There are four caves open to the public; tickets are required. Each of these four caves have their own unique aspects.

• Ngilgi Cave: this cave offers semi-guided tours leading you through its distinct aspects, including awe-inspiring stalactites hanging overhead and secret nooks to crawl through and explore.
• Mammoth Cave: immerse yourself in a self-guided tour showcasing the cave’s vast chambers while you learn its rich history through an informative audio guide.
• Lake Cave: this cave has a permanent underground lake with a distinctive stalactite and stalagmite formation joining to meet in the middle. Guided tours are provided to access this remarkable attraction.
• Jewel Cave: Situated near Augusta, join the guided tour of three large caverns displaying mesmerizing flowstone resembling frozen waterfalls.

Admire the Margaret River Rivermouth

The river that has provided the name sake for the town. Head to the small seaside town of Prevelly to watch where the river meets the sea at the Margaret River Rivermouth.

In summer, this is a popular swimming spot and water sports are usually available for hire.

Visit Margaret River’s Lighthouses

A popular attraction in Margaret River is visiting one of the lighthouses in the region.

Cape Naturaliste lighthouse is located near Dunsborough. Further south near Augusta you’ll find Cape Leeuwin lighthouse, Australia’s tallest mainland lighthouse.

Both lighthouses are operational to this day, and offer guided tours to learn about their importance in the history of the region.

Otherwise, for a small fee you can stroll around the complex on a self-guided exploration.

Learn to Surf

Margaret River is known for its legendary surf, and hosting the annual Margaret River Pro surfing event. If you’ve ever been curious to try your hand at surfing, now might be the time.

Navigate a Giant Hedge Maze

Get lost (for fun) at A Maze’n Margaret River. This giant hedge maze is a spectacular sight at over half a hectare in size. The property also has a cafe, mini golf, outdoor games and an immaculate garden to explore. It’s a great activity for the whole family.

There’s also a timber maze at Yallingup Maze, as well as a mini golf course and nature play areas.

Craft Beer Breweries

If you’re a craft beer enthusiast or simply enjoy a chilled brew, a visit to one of the many breweries in the Margaret River region should top your list. The area has an abundance of breweries, each with unique brew offerings and enjoyable spaces.

Here’s a rundown of some of my personal favourites:

• Wild Hop Brewing Co : this chilled spot in Yallingup has become a fast favourite thanks to its great range of brews and delicious meals
• Eagle Bay Brewing Co : One of the first breweries in the region, Eagle Bay is such a great spot for the whole family. There’s a large grassed area and a little veggie garden too.
• Margaret River Brewhouse : A great option on the outskirts of Margaret River town. There’s usually live music on weekends.
• Beerfarm : A funky venue located in an old dairy shed with an awesome range of beers.

Other breweries in the region include Cheeky Monkey and CBCo. 

Shelter Brewing in Busselton is another personal favourite, with delicious meals, a fantastic range of fresh beers and views of the Busselton Jetty from its waterfront location.

Saturday Mornings at the Farmers Market

A tradition for many visitors (and a Margaret River must see) is a trip to the local farmers market. Held every Saturday morning , the markets bring fresh seasonal food directly from farms to consumers.

You’ll find a range of market stalls, from fresh fruit and vegetables to locally made arts and crafts. The Farmers Market is an important part of the local community, and is a worthwhile experience to all weekend visitors to the region. 

Cowaramup has recently started a small farmers market at the Cowaramup Primary School. This fortnightly market is held on Sundays, and is a lot smaller than the one in Margaret River town, but is growing each week.

Paddle your Way Along the Margaret River

Experience a more adventurous side of Margaret River, with this highly rated half-day canoe tour on the river. You’ll learn above native wildlife and local history from your guide while paddling upstream.

This tour includes a gourmet lunch which includes wild food and bush tucker inspired meals to energise you before paddling downstream.

Another option to experience a different side of Margaret River is this Margaret River Wine Adventure Tour , which includes offers the perfect blend of adventure and indulgence.

Begin your adventure with a shorter paddle along the river before enjoying a private lunch at one of the winery estates. The adventure continues after lunch with a 4WD to the Wilyabrup Sea Cliffs and a short hike along the Cape to Cape before wrapping up the day with a waterfall visit.

Gin Tasting & Spirit Sampling

In recent years there have been a number of distillery additions to the burgeoning Margaret River wine scene.

Gin lovers are spoilt for choice with the following distilleries in the region:

• Margaret River Distilling Co (Ginversity): On the outskirts of Margaret River town you’ll find Ginversity nestled on the edge of the forest. Try a seated gin tasting, or enquire about a gin masterclass. Native botanicals feature in all the gins here, giving them a distinctive, local twist.
• The Grove Distillery : Drop in for a tasting and try the small-batch spirits, including vodka, whisky, rum, bourbon and of course, gin. This one tends to get larger group tours visiting on weekends, so keep this in mind if you’re planning to visit.
• West Winds : this new purpose-built distillery in the heart of Cowaramup is the place to try West Wind’s range of unique gins, vodkas and whiskies. Plus the tavern serves cocktails, local beers and wines alongside tasty meals.
• Wise Distillery : Wise Winery in picturesque Eagle Bay has a small distillery that uses their own grapes for their spirit base. Admire the custom built column stills whilst having a tasting of the hand bottled premium spirits of this small run distillery.

Visit Charming Cowaramup

A short drive 15 minutes north of Margaret River takes you to the charming town of Cowaramup. It’s hard to miss it, thanks to the number of life-sized fibreglass cows scattered around the town.

Pop into one of the local boutiques; browsing locally made wares at Mukau Giftware & Gallery or satisfy your sweet tooth at the Candy Cow.

A new addition to town is the West Winds Distillery and Tavern, serving up hearty meals and one of Australia’s best gins.

A short drive from the main street of town you’ll find the tasty Millers Ice Creamery shop with, you guessed it – more fibre-glassed cows!

Coastal Mornings in Gnarabup

Kickstart your day at the idyllic coastal town of Gnarabup, a haven for coffee enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.

Mere footsteps from the ocean, the White Elephant Cafe is the hub of this area, with a vibrant local clientele. Enjoy a leisurely stroll with a fresh brew in hand, or tuck into in a delicious brunch as you watch the locals take morning dips in the calm bay.

Redgate Beach

Redgate Beach is one of my personal favourites in the Margaret River Region.

The beach is scattered with a rocky outcrop that creates natural swimming holes and hides small rock pools to explore. Plus, the water colour clarity here is next level.

This beautiful beach is close to Mammoth Cave and some lovely small boutique wineries, like Redgate Wines and Mr Barval Fine Wines.

Olive Oil Tasting

So far we’ve explored chocolate, cheese, wine and gin tasting… the last one for this list is organic olive oil tasting at Ollio Bello.

It’s a fun visit to the tasting room and farm shop at Olio Bello, where you can savour their range of organic extra virgin olive oils and other produce. There are a range of interesting flavours and tastes for all cuisines, ranging from citrus to chilli concoctions.

They have a rustic Mediterranean style café serving meals, coffee and home baked goodies daily.

Where to Stay in Margaret River

Within the Margaret River Region, you can choose to stay in the coastal area of Dunsborough & Yallingup, or near the forest in Margaret River Town.

Margaret River. Margies. Margs. Call it what you like, but there is no question, it’s a home away from home for most Perthites and probably the number one destination for those of you visiting WA from interstate or overseas.

There’s heaps to choose from; whether it’s the annual holiday with the fam, a girls trip or a last minute romantic getaway.

From the quintessential activities you've almost certainly done already to the hidden gems you're yet to discover, here are 50 of the best things to do in Margaret River, according to someone who actually lives there. Be sure to check them out on your next trip “douth”.

Start your day in Eagle Bay with a stroll on Meelup Beach and a bite to eat at Meelup Farmhouse . 

Fix that appetite with brekky overlooking the bay at the locals' fave spot at the  White Elephant .

Splurge on the ultimate private wine tour with South West Luxury and let someone else take the wheel as you sip through the region's best wine in ultimate comfort. Expensive? A little, but honestly it's worth every penny.

Set off on a bar crawl through the main strip of Margs. Start at  Morries  and take advantage of their two cocktails for $30 happy hour deal between 5pm and 6pm, then grab a tommy taco cocktail (like a tommy's margarita, but packed with taco flavours like coriander, chilli and sour cream) at newbie Rhum Burgandy before ticking Pearl's Bar,  Yonder  and  Rio’s  off your list all in one night—cheers to that!   

Go for a Parisian high tea at Rivendell Winery  and devour fancy French bites from pastry chef  Romain Lassiaille  in a lush garden setting.

Get a good burn at  Skhulpt  pilates.

Roll out a picnic blanket among the vines at LS Merchants in Cowaramup and split a bottle (or two) between friends. If you're lucky you might catch the legends from Normal Van  too—they often park up and sling fried chicken, burgers and other delish comfort food at the cellar door on long weekends and holidays.

Pull past  Sugarloaf Rock . Yes, it is a rock in the ocean. It’s a spectacular one though.

Learn the principles of regenerative farming before backing it up with a fresh farm-to-table feast at Glenarty Road .

Time your trip with one of the region's best food and wine fests—try Fine Vines in Spring or Cabin Fever in winter.

Outdoor movies are a summertime ritual. Enjoy the magic of the movies by starlight at Cape Mentelle and Caves House in Yallingup.

Become a master of gin by blending your own bottle with Giniversity at the Margaret River Distilling Co .

Fight the locals for a table at Pizzica , the most authentic pizza joint you will find outside of Italy.

Bring an empty basket and an empty belly to the Margaret River Farmers Market . Every Saturday morning it’s full of local produce, and it’s earned itself the title of Australia’s top Farmers Market.

Get a history fix at the first winery in the Region. Vasse Felix will give you the lowdown on the wine history of the region, and it has a fab art gallery and restaurant for those with time to spare.

One for kids—big and small. Hang about in the treetops and conquer your fear of heights at Forest Adventures South West .

Take a trip down under…ground that is! Take your pick from one of the many caves in the region. Each with its own special features. Lake Cave has an ethereal beauty while Ngilgi plays an important part in the history of the area.

See things from a different perspective. Scenic Helicopters will give you a trip to remember and a totally different viewpoint of Margs.

Get on ya bike! Margaret River is home to some of the state’s top mountain biking routes. Bring your own or hire one from The Hairy Marron . The staff are super helpful if you need tips for your ride, plus they have a cafe so you can grab a post-ride coffee and feed.

Raise a glass at Settlers Tavern with one of the best wine lists in the country. P.S. They make a mighty fine bloody mary as well for the morning after.

Sink into a vintage couch at the Margaret River Bakery and try to take your pick from their menu. Warning: you will need to save room for a sweet treat after the main meal.

Bored? Grab a board. Learn to surf with the Margaret River Surf School . You can’t knock it until you’ve tried it. There’s a reason it has become a way of life down here.

Soup secrets. Get in line early on Mondays and Wednesdays, for ‘soupie’, or the Margaret River Soup Kitchen for those that haven’t discovered its joys yet. Some of the freshest vegan food in town and definitely a community fave.

Tick off a seriously unforgettable multi-course dining experience at Frui Momento , Vasse Felix ,  Voyager Estate or Rustico at Hayshed Hill . 

Sip on some tasty natural drops of vino at Si Vintners . 

Chocoholics will get their fix of bean-to-bar goodness at Gabriel Chocolate or the classic Margaret River Chocolate Company . The very insta-worthy new kid on the (chocolate) block Yallingup Chocolate is also a must-visit.

Indulge in a cheese fest at Yallingup Cheese Company . 

Devour a hot loaf of sourdough fresh from the oven at the famous Yallingup Wood Fired Bread or stay local and grab some bread from Margaret River Wood Fired Bread , which is only a couple minutes south of town.

Fish and chips on the beach can’t be beat. Hooked Up can be found at Surfers Point on select nights, and Squid Lips in town should be your go-to for any lunch or dinner seafood cravings, every day of the week. 

Dumplings, roast duck and deluxe dim sum with sprawling vineyard views. Oh my. Check out Chow's Table .

Learn all about the art of wine at Leeuwin Estate with a food and wine flight. Be sure to check out the gallery downstairs while visiting.

Grab a snorkel and go for a swim in the crystal clear rock pools at the Aquarium—located halfway between the surf breaks at Smiths Beach and the popular Canal Rocks.

Bring the fur baby along on your next wine tour with Grape Escape’s Pawesome Tours .

Get your dancing shoes on for a boogie at The River . Whether it’s a silent disco or a night of live music, there’s always something cool going down.

Buy literally anything you could ever want at Gracie’s General . It’s got a cafe, post office, groceries, bait and tackle, and a newsagent all in one. P.S. they do amazing brekkie rolls. 

Walk off the carb fest with a stroll through Boranup Forest and take a minute to breathe in the serenity.

Get lost! At A’Mazen Margaret River that is. Let the kids (and kidults) loose in their half hectare hedge maze and set the timer.

Smell as fresh as a daisy by creating your own signature scent with a perfume workshop at Vasse Virgin . Their new store in town is right in the middle of the main shopping strip, so get ready to do some damage. 

Enjoy a dip with a difference at the Injidup natural spa . Enjoy a massage from mother nature in the secluded rock pool. 

Have some beats with your brews at a Sunday sesh at the Brewhouse Margaret River .

Enjoy a stroll in the garden and learn about biodynamic winemaking at Cullen . Of course, it goes without saying you will sample their award winning wine too!

Lighten up with a trip to a lighthouse. Pick from Cape Leeuwin or Cape Naturaliste .

Paddle down the actual Margaret River on a day trip to remember with the Margaret River Discovery Co .

Spend an afternoon filled with hot air and walk away with an exquisite creation from Melting Pot Glass Studio . Or, hit up a pottery spot .

Take a break from wining and dining and indulge in a feast for the eyes at one of the many art galleries in and about town.

Camping for those that don’t do camping. Try a luxe glamping experience at Olio Bello amongst the olive groves.

Rummage amongst the vintage gems at The Flying Wardrobe in nearby Witchcliffe.

Take a walk on the wild side. Park your car, pull on your boots and trek some of the Cape to Cape Track .

Take your shoes off and get the beachy sand between your toes. We personally love seeing the stingrays at Hamelin Bay beach . It’s not a trip to Margs if you don’t head home with a bottle of wine and sand on the car mats.

The Margaret River region is one of our favourite regions in Western Australia. Jetstar and Tourism Western Australia had recently asked us to film a promotional video about the Margaret River Region. Of course we were so excited and thrilled to be promoting a region in our very own state. The Margaret River region on Wadandi Boodja country is a living breathing embodiment of ancient geography, natural beauty, world class wines and fresh coastal air. When visiting the region you will feel and instant need to slow down, appreciating all the simple things in life and escaping the everyday rush. From rolling vineyards, ancient forests, pristine beaches and calm rock pools, here’s 15 of the Best places to visit in the Margaret River Region.

Where is the Margaret River Region?

The Margaret River Region stretches about 100 km between Cape Naturaliste and Cape Leeuwin. In the north you’ll find the towns of Busselton, Dunsborough and Yallingup. In the middle is Margaret River and then the town of Augusta at the southern tip where two rivers and two oceans meet.

Best places to visit in the Margaret River Region

1. busselton jetty.

The famous Busselton Jetty is located on the esplanade is a great spot for everyone . The esplanade has great cafes, play grounds for the kids, grass spots for picnic, skate parks and a netted swimming area. The Busselton Jetty is also the longest timber Jetty in the Southern Hemisphere. The world heritage listed Jetty extends 1.841 kilometres over the protected waters of Geographe Bay. Entry onto the Jetty outisde of opening hours is free, however during the Interpretive Centre’s  opening hours  – there is a small fee of $4 for a Jetty Day Pass (17 years and over)

If walking the whole jetty seems to long you can catch the small train which costs $16 per Adult or $9.50 per child. It’s a great way to sit back and relax while the train driver takes you on a scenic journey along the 1.7km jetty.

At the end of the Jetty there is also an Underwater Observation room which descens 8 metres below the water’s surface. There you can see what’s growing under the jetty, the piles create Australia’s greatest artificial reef attracting an array of coloured tropical and sub-tropical corals, sponges, fish and invertebrates. Discover more than 300 marine through the large viewing windows and learn about sharks, whales, and other marine creatures.

2. Visit the best beaches in the Margaret River Region

The Margret River Region has some of the most calm, pristine and vibrant blue beaches in Western Australia. With pure white sand, protected bays surrounded by bushland and orange rocks, its paradise at your door step. Spend the day floating in crystal clear waters at Castle Bay, You might even be lucky and have the whole beach to yourself.

Castle Beach is one of our favourite beaches with a nice short trail taking you through the bush to Castle Rock. Another favourite beach is the popular Meelup beach. Meelup Beach is very similar to Castle Beach but has toilets, showers, picnic facilities and a large carpark. On weekends there are often Ice cream vans that park up which is a nice treat on a summers day.

Other beautiful beaches to add to your list are Eagle Bay and Bunker Bay.

3. The Cape to Cape track

One of the best walks in Western Australia is the Cape to Cape track which takes you through sandy beaches, ancient granite rocks, cliff top tracks and National Park. The 123km track takes you along the Leeuwin-Naturaliste Ridge, between the lighthouses of Cape Naturaliste and Cape Leeuwin.

If you don’t have time to do the week long hike you can do a short portion with Cape to Cape Explorer tours (this is what we did). We had an amazing guide called Hamish and we loved his knowledge and passion for the ancient landscape, Indigenous and European history and connecting people and their stories. This was a fun way to learn all about the ancient landscapes, the nature of the Margaret River Region and diverse range of habitats. At the end there was an opportunity to jump into the natural ‘Aquarium’.

4. Swim at the local Aquarium

At the end of our short Cape to Cape tour we finished at the local spot known as the Aquarium. The Aquarium is a small lagoon protected by large granite rocks and offers a sheltered snorkeling area protected from the waves. Its a great spot to enjoy the sunshine and the calm lagoon.

Anyone can visit this marvellous natural aquarium. Simply just park at the Smith Beach car park and follow the rocks for about 20 minutes or check out the location here.

5. Enjoy a 5 course meal at Bunkers Beach House

Nestled in the sand dunes in the stunning Bunkers Bay is Bunkers Beach House. The restaurant is the perfect setting to enjoy top notch food, drinks and features local, sustainable Western Australian seafood. For only $70 pp enjoy Kitchen’s Choice set 5 course menu. We could not believe how delicious the food was. First we were bought out 5 entree dishes of local baked sourdough, Market fish carpaccio and for my vegetarian option- a creamy bean dish. Mains we had shared plates of grilled cabbage and purple carrots, baked pumpkin and cucumber salad. I had a delicious vegetarian pesto pasta and Max had a Market fish with Potato bouillon and a scallop dish. For desert was a lemon curd ice cream dish with white chocolate crumb. You can see in the photo below why Bunkers Beach House is famous for its award winning dining and food.

6. Visit the unique and most photographed rock formations

Thousands of years of the Indian Ocean surging and crashing against the granite coastline has chiselled out a narrow channel known as Canal Rocks . Walk down the narrow timber walkway for great views of the rushing ocean beneath. Climb up the rocks for impressive views of the ocean and surrounding seascape. 

Sugarloaf Rock is gigantic granite rock that emerges from the Indian Ocean. You can understand why this towering, sea-sculptured rock is one of the most photographed coastal landforms in the Margaret River region. With its ocean side often battered by treacherous seas, and the rock separated from the coast by a narrow channel of wild water, this is an incredible spot for sunset – best viewed from the elevated lookout.

7. Swim at Injidup Spa

Injidup Natural Spa is a hidden rock pool right on the edge of the wild Indian Ocean. Waves crash over the rocks to form a mini natural waterfall and spa. Its best to visit in the morning before it gets to crowded as this spot is a favourite.

8. Visit Vasse Felix- the first established winery in the Margaret River Region

The Margaret River Region is one of the world’s youngest wine regions however it’s wine is known all around the world. The soils in which its vines thrive are some of the most ancient on Earth. There are more than 200 vineyards through out the Margaret River region, focusing on sustainability, innovation and specialising in organic, biodynamic and natural winemaking.

Visit the winery where the story of Margaret River’s wines began – at  Vasse Felix . The region’s first vineyard was established in 1967 and Vasse Felix produced the region’s first cabernet sauvignon in 1972. Visit to the cellar door ‘The Vault ‘ showcasing the history of Vasse Felix and Margaret River from the very earliest days. 9. Stay in the luxury Hidden Valley Forest Retreat

10. Take a scenic drive through the Karri forrest

Discover a breathtaking drive between Margaret River and Augusta, through the Karri forrest where trunks tower over 80 meters high. The scenic drive will leave you in silent awe. There are a few spots to pull over for a picnic where you can appreciate the Karri Trees which are the third tallest tree in the world!

Take the gravel 2 wheel drive track that leaves and returns from Caves Road through the outskirts of the new growth forest. There is even a view point where you can see the ocean and the tree tops.

The Margaret River region takes pride in preserving and protecting its natural assets and being a sustainable destination. The region has been officially recognised as an ECO Destination (one of only four in Australia), and has earned a coveted spot in the  Green Destinations Top 100 Sustainable Destinations Awards .

11. Visit the famous Hamelin Bay and see the local sting rays

A visit to Hamelin Bay definitely deserves its place on best things to do in Margaret River. A large bay of bright white sand, turquoise waters filled with marine life, and spectacular coastal cliff walks. Hamelin Bay is great for swimming, snorkelling and fishing and divers can explore the nearby shipwreck.

If your lucky on a calm day take a stroll along the shoreline and spot the friendly local sting rays. At once there were 5 swimming all around us. Keep in mind that these are wild creatures and maintain your distance to respect their space.

12. Explore the rock pools at Conto Springs

The drive down along a corrugated orange gravel road is worth it to get to the isolated Contos Beach. The beach has small surf break, sheltered Rock pools and and rock formations perfect for exploring. Don’t be surprised if there is only a handful of cars and finding a spot to yourself on the long stretch of coast is no real challenge at all. 

13. Explore the crystal wonderland of Lake Cave

Beneath the Margaret River region lies over 100 limestone caves all unique in their own way. There are 4 main ones to visit- Ngilgi Cave, Mammoth Cave, Jewel Cave and Lake Cave. Lake Cave is a stunning crystal wonderland, descend a ‘staircase in time’ and enter the cave at the base of a spectacular sinkhole. Inside the cave, dazzling crystal formations dominate the cave roof, while the unique ‘Suspended Table’ is perfectly reflected in the tranquil water below. It is without doubt one of the most beautiful limestone caves in Western Australia.

14. Park up at the stunning Margaret River Mouth

A great spot to park up and watch the surfers is the Margaret Rivers River Mouth. This is where  Margaret River  meets the sea, the river mouth is a beautiful location to visit, swim, or just relax on the beach. The busy carpark often attracts lots of van-lifers from all over the world and a Fish and Chip food truck.

 The river mouth itself comes gracefully through the hillside and out onto the 500m long beach which is partly protected by reef. In summer the river is isolated from the ocean and its shallow, calm pool is a popular place for families with smaller children. In winter, the Margaret River swells and breaks through to flow into the ocean.

15. See Australia’s tallest lighthouse in Augusta

As the tallest lighthouse on mainland Australia, Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse is another must-see attraction while visiting Margaret River. This historic lighthouse is situated at the most south-westerly point of Australia, at the tip of a spectacular peninsula – where the Southern and Indian Oceans meet.

The Interpretive Centre is housed in one of the original lighthouse keepers’ cottages. Inside take a trip through maritime history and learn how this famous landmark was constructed from local limestone in 1895. The Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse is still a vital working lighthouse for vessels navigating the treacherous cape. 

Entry into the lighthouse costs $7.50 per person. If you would like to climb the stairs to the very top of the Lighthouse you can book a guided tour. Tickets cost $21.00 per adult and $10 per child.

Four publicly accessible caves are paid and accessible, and one free cave is a bit of a secret, but we’ll tell you all you need to know to find it. The four paid caves are:

• Ngilgi Cave: Offering semi-guided tours, this cave takes you to awe-inspiring stalactites hanging overhead and secret nooks to crawl through and explore.
• Mammoth Cave: Immerse yourself in a self-guided tour that unveils the cave’s vast chambers while you absorb its rich history through an informative audio guide.
• Lake Cave: This cave boasts a permanent underground lake with a striking stalactite and stalagmite formation that meet in the middle. Guided tours are available to access this remarkable attraction.
• Jewel Cave: Located near Augusta, this cave has guided tours that take you through three large caverns displaying mesmerising flowstone formations resembling frozen waterfalls.

However, it’s important to note that this hidden paradise is no secret, especially during the peak tourist season. The Injidup Natural Spa tends to draw crowds of eager visitors. Despite this, the experience remains unparalleled as you bask in the beauty of the Indian Ocean’s proximity.

Don’t limit your adventure to the water’s edge alone. Explore the area further, and you’ll be rewarded with opportunities for incredible photographs from atop the massive rocks. Heading south from the natural spa, you’ll stumble upon a pristine white sand beach, ideal for a leisurely swim or a serene sunbathing session.

How to Get From Perth to Margaret River

Travelling from Perth to Margaret River is straightforward. You can choose to drive, which takes approximately three hours, offering you the flexibility to stop at stunning viewpoints along the way.

Public transport options, including buses and trains, are also available, which may take a bit longer but are economical.

As Perth locals, we visit Margaret River a few times a year. This travel guide provides the best things to do in Margaret River and tips on the weather, location, and where to stay.

Margaret River, Western Australia, is a world-famous wine region and tourist destination. There’s a widde variety of attractions and places to see in Margaret River, from wine tasting and touring the vineyards to swimming and surfing at the beach. There are also stunning natural wonders, attractions, art galleries, and great restaurants.

This town is one of the most popular Perth getaways and is known for its surfing culture, award-winning wineries, fresh, delicious produce, and craft breweries . With so much to see and do, it’s no wonder Margaret River makes a great base, as there are various cafes, restaurants, and bars in town.

Top 15 Best Things To Do in Margaret River

1. margaret river wine tours & wineries.

The Margaret River region produces award-winning wines and has more than 120 world-class wineries. Despite only being responsible for 2% of Australia’s crush, it holds over 20% of the Australian premium wine market. In 2019, the average price per tonne in Margaret River was significantly higher than the Australian average (Margaret River $1,465 vs. Australian ave. $664). Over thirty-six grape varieties are planted here, but Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Chardonnay, and Shiraz are the most crushed. This area is a boutique wine region with 286 vineyards and 175 wine producers. One hundred wine producers crush less than 50 tonnes (less than 4,000 cases). There are over 90 cellar doors, of which 62 have received a 5 Star Halliday rating. It’s popular, too, being the third most visited wine region in Australia by international visitors (after Yarra Valley and Hunter). It’s the most visited wine region for domestic travelers, though. Margaret River exports to 45 countries and commands a significant premium at $12.74/L vs. the Australian average of $3.91/L. So, basically, we have outstanding wine! One of my favourite things is going to a vineyard for wine tasting and chatting with them about their vineyard. Most have such an interesting history, with families going back generations. Some wineries charge a small fee for the tastings, which is taken off any purchase. This is to stop the vans full of people stopping at each winery for tastings and not buying anything. A lot have restaurants, many winning awards, with spectacular views over the vineyards. It makes the perfect combination. In winter, find a cellar door with a warm, cosy wood fire. You can pick up a free map that includes all the wineries and attractions from the Margaret River Visitor Centre. Some of my favourite cellar doors in this part of the Margaret River region are: Redgate Wines Vasse Felix Voyager Estate Cullen Wines Stella Bella Consider taking a tour of the wineries so nobody has to drive. I like this Full-Day Winery and Brewery Tour with lunch which is very popular and well rated.

2. Margaret River Caves

In the Leeuwin National Park, there are several hundred underground caves. Six of these Margaret River Caves are open to the public. Mammoth Cave  is a multi-chambered cave, home to many ancient fossil remains, and is the most accessible out of the ancient caves in the region. This self-guided audio tour ends with a walk through beautiful bushland.

Lake Cave  is a stunning preserved chamber beneath the earth. A long staircase descends through a sinkhole to a sunken forest floor. Crystal formations reflect on the tranquil lake inside the cave, and stalactites suspend from the ceiling. The 30-minute, fully guided tour is not suitable for anyone with low mobility. Read the full Lake Cave review here .

Jewel Cave  is the largest and is home to one of the longest stalactites in any Australian tourist cave. Be amazed at the towering crystal formations that adorn the cave’s ceiling. During the one-hour guided tour , you will learn about the Tasmanian Tiger fossils found in the cave. My favourite cave in Margaret River. The other two are Calgardup Cave and Giants Cave. The caves are one of the best things to do in Margaret River on a rainy winter day. They are kid-friendly, too; our daughters were amazed by the formations and the pretty crystals! Read more in this guide to the Margaret River Caves .

3. Whale Watching

We are so lucky to see these beautiful creatures along our coast in Western Australia. Margaret River is one of the best regions for whale watching due to its long season (from June to early December). The season starts in   Augusta , and the best time to see whales is from June to August. You may see Humpback, Southern Right, Minke, and Blue Whales here. Humpback Whales are known for their agility, and you may witness them breach or tail slap. Southern Rights calve in the bay. Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse is the best place to whale watch from land in Augusta. Another place to try is Boranup Lookout, near  Hamelin Bay . You will need binoculars from here, though. Humpbacks head up north to the warm waters around  Broome  to give birth. They return to Geographe Bay, near Dunsborough , to nurse their young from September to early December. We have seen whales from the shore a few times, but in Geographe Bay and Yallingup. Look for the water spout; that’s the giveaway! My favourite way of whale watching is from the ocean on a tour . 4. Hiking or Mountain Biking

The Cape to Cape is the most famous hiking track in the Margaret River region. The 140 km trail follows the coast from Cape Naturaliste lighthouse to Cape Leeuwin. The five to six-day walk takes in stunning views from near Dunsborough to Augusta. However, you can do it in stages. We pick parts of it to hike each time we visit, even when the kids were young. Some of it is paved, which allows access for all abilities.

The  Ten Mile Brook Trail  starts at Rotary Park in Margaret River. This 15 km trail can be cycled or walked and mainly follows the river to Ten Mile Brook Dam. It’s an easy grade walk and suitable for cyclists as well. 

The  Wadandi Track  (previously called Rails to Trails) is a 23 km trail suitable for walkers and cyclists (Mountain Bikes recommended). The easy-to-walk trail goes through peppermint, jarrah, and young karri forests from Cowaramup to Witchcliffe. There are picnic stops along the way with an abundance of birdlife and wildflowers in Spring (September to December).

Carter’s Road Trail Head is the start of four trails through forests. Big Brook Walk is an easy grade 3.4 km loop that crosses Bramley Brook, and the 2.7 km Old Chimney Walk is a medium-grade trail that passes the original Wharncliffe mill and old chimney. The Bridge Walk (3 km) and Pine Plantation Walk (1.7 km) are small steep grades but offer stunning views. We managed to get lost here, so pay attention to where you are going (not like us!).

The best Mountain Bike trails are located on Carter’s Road too. The Pines are suitable for riders of all abilities with easy fire road climbs, fast, flowing singletrack descents, berms, and fun tabletop jumps.

Prevelly Cycle & Walk Trail covers 10 km between Margaret River and Gnarabup Beach. This concrete path follows Walcliffe Road, through the forest to the Margaret River and ocean. At Prevelly, there’s a convenience store at the caravan park or the Sea Garden Café. The café is licensed, perfect for a glass of wine, or beer, overlooking the ocean.  The last part is from Prevelly to Gnarabup, a popular swimming beach. The White Elephant Café is on the beachfront, with toilet and shower facilities. 

5. Beach and Surfing

In WA, Margaret River is well known for its surfing breaks, but the beaches are still a popular free activity, even if you don’t surf. While my favourite regional beaches are near Dunsborough, Margaret River still has some stunning ones. You can’t pick a lousy beach here. Gnarabup Beach  is the most popular swimming beach in the area. The white sandy bay stretches from the southern headland with its massive limestone cliff to Surfers Point, making it the longest beach in Prevelly. The reef protects the beach and offers calm conditions for swimming. It is patrolled during the summer by the local surf club and has free toilet and shower facilities. The lookout on the cliff provides spectacular views of the beach and river mouth. You can have a 90-minute stand up paddle board lesson here (see photo below) with a professional instructor. Margaret Rivermouth Beach is where Margaret River meets the ocean. Most of the time, the river is blocked by sand so you can cross. When you get to Prevelly, go far right, this is where the Prevelly river mouth beach is. During summer, it’s an excellent spot for young kids to paddle. There are toilets, showers, and changing rooms here.  As with most beaches in Western Australia , it is best in the mornings before the south-westerly breeze comes in.  Try to swim only at patrolled beaches, pay attention to the signs, and look for rips. Remember, the Australian sun is hot, so be sun smart. Margaret River has around 75 breaks along its 130 km of coast. The international  Margaret River Pro  is held at Surfers Point, which breaks around Prevelly at the mouth of Margaret River. 6. Breweries, Cideries and Distilleries

Don’t worry if you don’t like wine; Margaret River is a haven for craft breweries. Each brewery has a different style, and some are quite different. Most have tasting paddles where you can try their beers. We’ve had some weird ones over the years, but they are great to try out.

Breweries are relaxing places to have a drink and lunch with a lively atmosphere. Look out for live music and sit back and enjoy the free entertainment.

Some are dog friendly too, but check before you go, as it may depend on the time of year.

It’s not just limited to beer, either. Margaret River also has a cidery and distillery, which are very popular.

If you plan to have lunch, I suggest booking in advance as it can be almost impossible to get a table at peak times.

The Grove Distillery , Cowaranup Brewery, Eagle Bay, Beer Farm, and Margaret River Brewhouse are great ones to try.

For whiskey-lovers, Grove Distillery (the first distillery in the Margaret River region) offer a guided whiskey tasting. Led by their staff, you will have two tastings of their latest premium, small batch releases, which have been aged for a minimum of five years.

7. Margaret River Chocolate Factory

If you love chocolate, visit the Margaret River Chocolate Company at the original factory in the Margaret River region. Opened in 1999, it is now one of Western Australia’s most popular tourist destinations . Entry is free, and so are the tastings (choose from white, milk, and dark chocolate or try all three!). You can see the chocolate being made through large viewing windows and wander through the shop looking at the large range of products available for purchase.

The Chocolate Café serves light lunches and sweets, including burgers, chips, salad, soup, cakes, desserts, chocolate fondues, milkshakes, and hot drinks.

8. Margaret River Town

Margaret River’s main street is lined with boutiques, art galleries, cafes, and tourist shops, making it the perfect place to look for that unique gift. The Margaret River Tourist Information Centre is located in town and is a brilliant resource for free maps of the area, guidebooks, gifts, and souvenirs.

At the end of town, Rotary Park is a recreational area with a playground close to the river.

At night, the town comes alive with wine bars, restaurants, and live music. Meet up with some friends and make a night of it.

9. Sunflowers Animal Farm

Sunflowers Animal Farm is now in Ludlow, near Busselton.

10. Caves Road Tourist Drive

Take a scenic drive along the 111 km long iconic Caves Road, which connects the two capes, Cape Leeuwin and Cape Naturaliste. Although it runs parallel to the coast, it is inland, providing views of the forests, farms, and wineries that back onto the road.

The road is a single winding lane in most parts, so sit back, take your time, and enjoy the views. Don’t speed; those huge trees are unforgiving.

11. Boranup Forest

Boranup Forest is a 25-minute drive south of Margaret River town along Caves Road. Boranup means “place of the male dingo” to the Wadandi people, one of the Nyungar language groups of Western Australia.

Boranup Drive is a beautiful tourist drive which is a firm gravel road but is suitable for two-wheel drives, although it can be a bit bumpy! It winds through the stunning forest, consisting of two-thirds Jarrah and Marri, the remainder being Karri (third tallest trees in the world). Most of the forest is regrowth from when it was milled in the late 1800s.

Karri Lookout (Boranup Lookout) is on the eastern side of Caves Road and has views of the forest, coastline, and Hamelin Bay.

Take a walk amongst the towering karri trees and see wildflowers, including orchids, in spring.

 It was devastating to see the Boranup Forest after the huge bushfire in December 2021. There’s a great article by Margaret River Mail on how we must learn lessons from this fire . I agree that we need to include Aboriginal management in the recovery plan as they know the land far better than we do.

12. Margaret River Farmers Market

Margaret River Farmers’ Market has been providing fresh local produce to its customers since 2002. They are held every Saturday from 7:30 am to 11:30 am at the Margaret River Education Campus, Lot 272 Bussell Hwy, Margaret River. There’s too much produce to list, but you can find a full list on the Margaret River Farmers Market site .

Please note that dogs are not allowed due to health and safety requirements.

13. Hamelin Bay

Hamelin Bay is a beautiful beach between Margaret River and Augusta. It’s a 25-minute drive from Margaret River and just over 10 minutes from Augusta.

This beach is well known in Western Australia for its beautiful white sand and the abundance of stingrays.

It’s also an excellent beach for fishing, diving, and snorkelling.

14. Augusta

Augusta is a 30-minute drive from Margaret River and a wonderful place for a day trip. This charming coastal town is the most south western town in Australia. It’s also the point where the Southern and Indian Oceans meet. You will find perfect conditions for windsurfing, kitesurfing, paddling, snorkelling, and wildlife spotting.

While here, visit the  Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse , the tallest lighthouse in mainland Australia. This working lighthouse has spectacular views of the rugged coast and the Southern and Indian oceans. Cape Leeuwin lighthouse marks the start (or end) of the Cape to Cape Track.

Combine the day in Augusta with a visit to Hamelin Bay and Boranup Karri Forest. The towering trees of the karri forest are mesmerising and filled with wildflowers in spring. 

The Boranup Lookout is the start of some lovely walking trails and offers stunning views of Hamelin Bay’s turquoise waters. The forest is a haven for birdlife, including Purple-crowned Lorikeet, Splendid Fairy-wren, White-breasted Robin, Crested Strike-tit, and Golden Whistler.

15. A Maze’N Margaret River

We have only been to the maze in Yallingup, but A Maze’N has great reviews. The attraction incorporates a half-hectare giant hedge maze, an 18-hole mini-golf, five hectares of stunning gardens with mazes, outdoor games, puzzles, and a café.

Private House for 8 Guests

We stayed at   Kings Landing  one Christmas. It’s a luxurious property on the outskirts of Margaret River that sleeps up to eight guests. This holiday home is in a rural setting on 3.8 acres of land, where kangaroos visit each night. Kings Landing has spacious open-plan living areas and a large modern kitchen. It contained everything we needed for our weeks’ stay, even table tennis in the garage! I highly recommend staying there.

Margaret River Location & How To Get There

Margaret River is in the Western Australia’s South West . International and domestic visitors will fly into  Perth Airport .

Margaret River is a 3-hour drive along State Route 2, National Route 1, followed by State Route 10.

TransWA runs buses to Augusta that stop in Margaret River. However, it’s hard to get around this region without a car. SouthWest Coachlines also have a service from Elizabeth Quay in Perth to Margaret River via Busselton.

Margaret River Weather & Forecast

The hottest months are January & February, where the average highs are 26/27 degrees.

March, April, November, and December have warm 22-25 degree days with minimums of around 11.

The coldest months are from June to September. During this time, the temperature will be around 16/17, with a minimum of 8.

The most rain falls between June and August, with February being the driest month.

The Best Time to Visit Margaret River Western Australia

You should visit Margaret River between December and March if you want a beach holiday. However, it is extremely busy during the summer WA school holidays , so try to avoid Christmas and January if you can.

For Surfing, head to the region any time of the year or in March to watch the Margaret River Pro.

Whales pass along the coast from June to September in Augusta and from September to December near Dunsborough.

To experience Margaret River’s Gourmet escape, you should visit in November. Avoid “schoolies week” when hundreds of school leavers descend on the region.

A Brief History & Settlement of Margaret River Australia

I would like to respectfully acknowledge the Wadandi Noongar People, the Traditional Owners, and First People of these lands. I would like to pay my respect to the Elders past, present, and future, for they hold the memories, the traditions, the culture, and hopes of the Wadandi People.

Artifacts found in Devil’s Lair Cave, just south of Margaret River, indicate human life dating back 48,000 years.

This area is important to the local Wadandi People to continue their connection to the land and sea. Various cultural tours are available through Koomal Dreaming to experience Wadandi and Bibbulman country through their eyes.

The Margaret River area was first settled by Europeans in 1857 when Alfred and Ellen Bussell built their homestead “Ellensbrook.”

Lockville Timber Co was granted a 14-year lease to cut timber in the Augusta district in 1875. During the 1880s, the timber trade continued to grow. About 17 million railway sleepers were cut from the surrounding forests from 1900 to 1914.

Margaret River was gazetted in 1913 and reportedly named after Margaret Whicher, cousin of John Garrett Bussell. The timber trade started to decline around this time due to the forests being over-logged.

The Margaret River region is now known for its world-class wines and surfing breaks.

Things to do in margaret river: a one day trip from stunning beaches to wineries.

Anyone who likes wine in Australia would have heard of Margaret River. But it’s actually a lot more than just a wine region ! The vineyards are located between two capes, Cape Naturaliste and Cape Leeuwin. And the coast from one Cape to another is stunning.

Premium wines and magnificent beaches… Doesn’t the Margaret River sound like a perfect destination?!

Using our experience visiting the region twice for a short trip, I’ve selected a few things to do in Margaret River according to what we enjoyed the most, and then made another shortlist as a suggestion for those with only one day there.

When you grab a tourist map of the Margaret River region, you immediately see there are enough attractions to keep you entertained for a full week. We only had a couple of days before going East to reach Esperance ( see the full itinerary here ), so we had to make choices. We decided to skip the cave exploration as we had opportunities to do that elsewhere. We focused on the coast and the wineries. I’ve placed them on a map at the end of the article to help you organise your trip there.

The Busselton Jetty: the longest wooden jetty in the world

Our first stop was Busselton, a coastal town reputed for its 2km long jetty. We left Perth in the afternoon and arrived in Busselton at the end of the day. We walked on the jetty at sunset. Despite the cold wind, it was lovely.

During the day, only those who buy a ticket can get access to the jetty. I’m not sure it’s a must-see if you’re only in Margaret River for one day. But if you are interested in discovering the underwater world, you may want to give it a go.

A beautiful coast from one cape to another

The Margaret River region goes from Cape Naturalist in the north to Cape Leeuwin in the south.  And the coast is beautiful all along the 120 kilometres.

Our recommendations of the best places to check out on the coast when visiting the Margaret River:

• Point Piquet in Meelup Regional Park, for its red rocks near the turquoise water
• Sugarloaf Rock , for the dramatic shapes
• Canal Rocks , a must-see. Although the wind was not a highlight of our trip to Western Australia, it made some places look incredible and wild. Canal Rocks was one of them: the waves were powerful!
• Hamelin Bay , for the friendly rays. Unfortunately, they did not visit the beach when we were there. But we’ve seen amazing videos  of the place. The rays come to the shore in a few centimetres of water, attracted by the scraps the fishermen leave behind them.
• Cape Leeuwin , for its lighthouse and the magnificent views. We were disappointed by Cape Naturalist Lighthouse, which is a lot smaller and with no interesting views from the base. But Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse is worth going. Although we could not climb to the top of the tower as there was a two-hour wait because of the school holidays, we enjoyed our visit around the base and our drive in the natural park. Did you know that the Indian Ocean and the Southern Ocean meet there?

And beautiful wines from one cape to another!

Margaret River is a major wine region in Australia: 20% of Australian premium wines are from there! The region has a maritime climate that can be compared to Bordeaux, which is a particularity in Australia. Margaret River wines are mostly famous for their Cabernet Sauvignon blends and Chardonnay.

Our recommendation of wineries to visit in the Margaret River:

It’s hard to choose between the 215 vineyards and the 180 wineries. We had lunch at two wineries ( Aravina Estate and  Brookland Valley ) and visited two other ones for wine tasting ( Voyager Estate and  Woodlands – the ones we knew from the other part of the country). All had lovely views and beautiful parks. The food was excellent and there was not a wine we did not like. Special mentions for the homemade charcuterie and the local venison at Brookland Valley, and for the Aravina Estate Wildwood Ridge Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon.

Things to do in Margaret River in one day

You’ll have to make choices among the things I listed earlier if you only have one day to explore the Margaret River.

Point Piquet , Sugarloaf Rock and Canal Rocks along the north coast are stunning and you should be able to check them out in half a day. If you spent the night nearby, then you’ll be ready to start going down around lunchtime. The timing should be perfect to stop at a winery (Aravina Estate is the closest on my list) – make sure you call them before to confirm they’re open and have space for you. You can then go all the way down to Cape Leeuwin for the rest of your day.

If you are visiting the Margaret River as a day trip from Perth, then you’ll probably have to skip Cape Leeuwin and stick to the north of the region.

Where to stay in Margaret River

I think I made it clear that you cannot do all the things Margaret River has to offer in just one day. So if you can spend more time in Margaret River, it’s worth it. To have a full day to explore Margaret River, we stopped in Busselton * after leaving Perth in the afternoon. It allowed us to check out the jetty at sunset and save time for our day in Margaret River.

Next time we go, we’ll make sure we have more time to relax and book one of the amazing accommodations between stunning nature and wineries. If you’re looking for accommodation that will create memories , more than just a place to spend the night, check out these ones:

• Eight Willows Retreat * – for more affordable rooms. Nature will be at your doorstep, and some rooms have lake views and a spa bath.
• Hilltop Studios * – if you’re lucky with the dates as it’s often fully booked. It’s hard not to love their uninterrupted views and the spa bath.
• Island Brook Estate Winery * – so that you can enjoy wine tasting at the property. And it comes on top of the spa bath and lovely forest setting.
• Bettenays Margaret River * – for unbeatable lake and vineyard views. And the spa bath, of course.

It takes three hours to drive to Margaret River from Perth. For us, it was a stop on our road trip along the southwest of Western Australia . But it’s a great destination for a weekend, and even for a week!

Sydney and Melbourne are arguably the most popular destinations in Australia for international visitors, but did you know that Western Australia is the biggest state? It accounts for approximately a third of Australia’s land mass but receives a fraction of the number of international visitors that Sydney and Melbourne receive every year.

According to Tourism Research Australia , Sydney and Melbourne received a combined 7 million+ international visitors in the year ending June 2019. The entire state of Western Australia welcomed about 973,000 – which means that the Margaret River region received just a fraction of that!

The Margaret River region (which includes Margaret River town) is one of the most popular destinations in Western Australia and is world-renowned for its outstanding wineries , but is also famous for its stunning beaches , natural wonders and unique landmarks.

The best time to visit the Margaret River region is during the Australian summer months (December through February), but the shoulder season is fantastic too. The winter months are extremely cold so if you’re looking to hit the beaches then avoid visiting from June to August. If you want to explore an underrated part of the world, add the Margaret River region to your bucket list now. How to get to Margaret River and how to get around

Getting from Perth to Margaret River is relatively easy if you rent a car – the Margaret River region is located 3 hours away from Perth . Here’s what you need to know – when people refer to the “Margaret River region” it includes the town of the same name – “Margaret River”. However, the entire Margaret River region actually starts from Busselton and Dunsborough in the north down to Augusta in the south.

The closest international airport is in Perth: from Perth your best option is to rent a car (we have used Keddy by Europcar, Budget and Thrifty in the past) to make the drive down south. Remember, you drive on the left in Australia (the steering wheel is on the right). Alternatively, if you are headed to the Margaret River region from the east coast of Australia, Jetstar operates direct domestic flights between Melbourne and Busselton 3 times a week. In March 2024 Jetstar will also begin offering flights between Sydney and Busselton 3 times a week.

There are a limited number of express buses that you can take via South West Coast Lines , and I’ve also heard good things about this shared airport shuttle service between Perth Airport and the Margaret River region , though it appears to only operate Monday to Friday, and not on the weekends.

Once you are in the area, public transport is pretty much non-existent and private tours and drivers are pricey, so the best way to get around is to self-drive. Parking is plentiful and Google Maps is very accurate – just stick to the speed limits and be alert when driving (especially at night) as kangaroos are known to jump into the middle of the street out of nowhere. Kangaroo collisions are no joke.

If you don’t want to self-drive from Perth to Margaret River, get in touch with DBM Drivers , a locally owned wine tour and airport transfer business. Their rates are extremely reasonable compared to other companies, and were very reliable when we used them for a one-way airport transfer. Full day tours are $350-400 for up to 7 people, and one-way airport transfers are $400 for up to 7 people (rates accurate as of 2023).

The best places to stay in the Margaret River region

Accommodation prices tend to be higher in this area, with nightly rates reaching as much as AUD$300-500 during the peak season. To get bang for your buck, make sure you stay in a convenient and picturesque town so that you can explore more of the beaches and coast. Wondering where to stay in the Margaret River region?

I would recommend staying in Dunsborough, Quindalup, Margaret River town, Yallingup, Eagle Bay or Bunker Bay . Here are some personal recommendations:

Melo Studios in Dunsborough : Perfect for a romantic getaway in the Margaret River region for couples. There are 2 ultra-luxe villas available – this 2-bedroom Caesia Studio or 2-bedroom Eucalypt Studio with kitchen, BBQ area and lounge. Michael and Jess are superhosts who grew up in the area, and their properties are always immaculate. Dunsborough Hideaway : A charming and modern studio, located a short 5-minute drive from Dunsborough town in a quiet residential neighborhood away from the hustle and bustle. There is a beautiful garden out front as well as a full kitchen. Elaine’s studio is also often booked up months in advance, so check availability and book early .

Lakeside glamping at Olio Bello in Cowaramup : Perfect if you’re looking for something a little different. Olio Bello offers 6 stunning glamping tents about 10 minutes away from Margaret River town. The tents are luxurious and incredibly spacious, and are fantastic for couples looking to retreat into nature and experience some serious peace and quiet. Chambré Estate in Margaret River town : For an immersive “Australian bush” experience, check into the luxurious Chambré Estate just a 5-minute drive from Margaret River town. The brand-new property offers cozy suites and multi-room cabins and kitchens for those traveling with friends and family, and certain suites have access to their stunning outdoor wood-fired hot tubs (just so you know, these may not be used when fire bans are in place, typically December to March). The best places to visit in the Margaret River region

Wondering what to do in Margaret River? Read on for some of the best places to visit and things to do in this stunning region of Western Australia.

1. Boranup Karri Forest

Boranup Karri Forest lies between Caves Road and the coast and is filled with pale-barked karri trees. Karri trees are one of the tallest species of tree in the world and can reach nearly 90 meters in height.

There is no entry fee and there are small parking areas to the side, so make sure you drive through this amazing woodland during your trip.

2. Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse

Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse is located in the south of the Margaret River region, where the Indian and Southern Oceans meet. It is the tallest lighthouse on mainland Australia, which means that one of the best things to do in this region is to go on a lighthouse tour, just look at this view!

Lighthouse tours (AUD$21 at time of publishing) take place every half hour and is jam-packed with fascinating facts about the history of the lighthouse – the build, the keepers, the multiple shipwrecks prior to building the lighthouse and how operations are maintained (it’s a working lighthouse to this day).

Guided lighthouse tours every half hour from 9 AM to 4:30 PM, and there is a small on-site café if you’re feeling a bit peckish. Visit the website to pre-book your lighthouse tour (and avoid any disappointment if a particular time slot is full).

3. Sugarloaf Rock

Aptly named for its conical shape, Sugarloaf Rock is located off the coastline and a popular sunset spot. I don’t usually go out of my way to see a rock, but this one is pretty darn special and is one of the most famous Margaret River attractions.

Watching the sunset is one of the best things to do in the Margaret River region – it’s spectacular during the day, but if you’re heading there in the late afternoon make sure you bring a blanket as it can get extremely windy and cold, even in the summer months.

4. Meelup Beach

Meelup Beach is one of the most popular beaches in this region and it’s not hard to see why – it offers fine white sand, crystal clear water and is protected from wind and waves – what’s not to love? If you are traveling with children, this is the perfect beach to take them to.

5. Point Piquet

Located nearby Meelup Beach, Point Piquet is another beautiful bay with perfectly turquoise-coloured water. This is a great swimming spot to check out and doesn’t tend to get as busy as Meelup Beach if you want the bay to yourself.

The water is crystal clear, and offers a nice sandbank for beginner to intermediate surfers when the winter swell hits.

6. Bunker Bay

Bunker Bay is a great place to grab brunch followed by a dip in the ocean. The long stretch of beach is a great place to soak up the sunshine and is considered one of the top beaches in the region.

7. Injidup Natural Spa

This natural rockpool is located in Yallingup and is a hidden gem in the Margaret River region. Bring your swimsuit (and sunscreen – the sun is brutal in Australia) and drive here for a fun afternoon. It can be easily accessed by car – take the trail on the left hand side of the parking lot and make your way down towards the coast.

Turn right when you reach the fork and you’ll find yourself at the rockpool. You’ll have to climb down so wear appropriate footwear.

8. Canal Rocks

Canal Rocks is natural geographical feature along the coast of the Margaret River region. A natural narrow channel was formed after centuries of erosion from the ocean’s waves, which can be explored on foot through wooden pathways.

Canal Rocks is part of the Cape to Cape Track, or you could always venture on towards Wyadup Cliffs for a leisurely 2-kilometre scenic walk.

9. Busselton Jetty

You may be thinking to yourself, “Why is a jetty on this list?” The reason is because Busselton Jetty is the longest wooden jetty in the southern hemisphere, spanning more than 2 kilometers in length! Walking the entire length will take you approximately 25 minutes.

There is also a small “train” that takes you up and down the stretch of the jetty (departing on the hour, the ride lasts 45 minutes) as well as an underwater observatory where you can check out the marine life. It’s one of the more popular Margaret River attractions to check out if you’re traveling with young children – our nephews and nieces love it! You will want to book ahead as the train fills up quickly and you will need to wait until the next departure time if you miss it.

10. Hamelin Bay

Hamelin Bay is home to a few unique residents – a fever of sting rays that often swim right up to the shoreline. They’re often found at the boat ramp on the beach where they are fed scraps by the fishermen.

If you’re looking to see the sting rays in Hamelin Bay, choose a sunny day with little to no swell so that the water visibility is higher. It’s also important to be respectful as the sting ray are wild – avoid harassing them or trying to touch or pet them – they are not pets, after all.

11. Lake Cave or Ngilgi Cave

The region is also home to more than 100 natural caves, some as deep as a 12-storey building! There are 4 show caves in the Margaret River region that are currently open to the public, and you can join semi-guided tours to explore deep underground. If you’re looking for unique things to do in the Margaret River region you can’t skip a cave tour.

The Lake Cave near Boranup Forest is spectacular and is suitable for most visitors (children under 4 visit for free) but you’ll need to walk approximately 300 steps down and back up. The stalactites, stalagmites and straws in the cave are incredible and there is also a rare suspended table formation – the only of its kind in the world.

You might also want to check out Ngilgi Cave – the region’s first-ever tourist attraction which visitors were once lowered into via rope. Today, there is a set of stairs and pathways leading visitors through the expansive underground cave – it is a LOT bigger than you might imagine and there are some tight spots to navigate through. Don’t let the small entryway fool you! Tickets cost AU$24 per person for adults at Mammoth, Lake and Jewel Caves or AU$32 at Ngilgi Cave.

12. The Aquarium

The Aquarium, like the natural spa at Injidup, is a natural rock pool that is largely protected from waves and swell. The crystal-clear water is almost a turquoise colour and makes for a perfect swimming spot on a hot day. You’ll have to walk on an unpaved trail for about 15-20 minutes to get to this secret spot in the Margaret River region.

Can you see why this is one of my favourite Margaret River attractions? We’ve spent many afternoons here, wading around in the water and jumping off rocks with the nephews!

It’s also a very popular spot for snorkeling in the Margaret River region as it is protected from heavy swell and the water is as translucent as it gets.

Other things to do in Margaret River

The Margaret River region also has one of the longest whale watching seasons in the world: the season runs during the second half of the year and whales are often spotted during their migration. More details here.

Melbourne is the city I want to visit in Australia but after reading about the Margaret River Region I’ll add this to my itinerary as well and even up those visitor numbers! I would have to visit Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse and see where the Southern and Indian oceans meet.

This area is definitely underrated! Melbourne’s fantastic as well though – make sure you head out to the Great Ocean Road!

Exmouth, Albany, Margaret River and Broome named four of Australia’s most beautiful towns

A vibrant Gascoyne town has been crowned one of Australia’s best towns once again, this time by a survey comparing appearances on social media channels Instagram and Pinterest.

A Mortgage Broker Pty Ltd survey comparing hashtags on the social media platform Instagram and pins on the visual discovery platform Pinterest has ranked Exmouth as the eighth most beautiful place in Australia.

The survey looked at 40 towns across the country and found Exmouth appeared in 443,000 Instagram hashtags and 979 Pinterest pins, with 443,979 total social media appearances.

The Gascoyne town beat Broome in the Kimberley, which came in with 433,000 hashtags and 983 pins (433,983 in total).

Towns in the South West overcame their northern counterparts, with Albany coming in as fourth most beautiful with 1,301,019 total appearances and Margaret River fifth with 875,014.

However, top of the list was Richmond in Tasmania, raking in 4,901,088 social media appearances, followed by Byron Bay in NSW (3,300,991) and Noosa in Queensland (1,701,024).

It is not the first time this year Exmouth has been crowned one of the best towns in Australia.

At the seventh Wotif’s Town of the Year awards in February, Exmouth was named the ninth-best town across the country due to its nearby attractions, including the Ningaloo Reef.

In June, Exmouth won gold for the third year in a row in the 7News Top Tourism Town Awards’ small tourism town category.

Exmouth will go on to compete in the Top Tourism Town Awards finals on Tuesday, September 10, in Canberra.
