Peter Uihlein's victory in Web.com Tour Finals opener gives him PGA Tour exemption ... and options

Nationwide Children's Hospital Championship - Final Round

Michael Cohen

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The professional golf odyssey of Peter Uihlein didn’t end Sunday with his victory in the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Championship. It only became more complicated.

Which is a nice problem to have.

Destined for the PGA Tour since an All-American career at Oklahoma State and a victory in the 2010 U.S. Amateur, Uihlein finally earned his exempt status with a one-stroke triumph over local favorite Ryan Armour in the Web.com Tour Finals opener at the Scarlet Course at Ohio State University Golf Club.

And he had no idea how he was going to use his newfound status.

Uihlein, who turned 28 last Tuesday, has competed primarily in Europe since he turned professional in 2012. And in the immediate aftermath of his third professional title, he wasn’t inclined to alter his plans of another autumn abroad.

“I have to sit down and really look at the schedule,” Uihlein said after firing an “efficient” six-under-par 65 to blaze past Armour, a former Buckeyes golfer, to finish at 14-under 270. “There’s so many good events now in Europe. The Rolex Series they created … phenomenal. So many events you don’t really want to miss, because there’s countries I love going to, events I like playing, courses I really enjoy over there. It’s really tough. I just don’t know. I don’t know next year’s schedule in Europe. I haven’t looked at the PGA Tour schedule. I don’t know where I’m going to be playing, but I know I’m going to try and do both and we’ll see what happens.”

Thanks to three top-25 finishes this season in seven tour events, Uihlein earned enough FedEx Cup points to qualify for the Web.com Tour Finals as a non-member. Bryson DeChambeau took the same route to a tour card last year when he captured the DAP Championship in Cleveland.

The top-25 money winners from the four-event finals earn PGA Tour cards for the 2017-’18 season. With his $180,000 first prize, Uihlein is a lock after he overcame a four-stroke deficit to nip Armour with an impeccable round in which he missed just one fairway and one green. Still, he needed a little help, which Armour supplied when he bogeyed the 72nd hole after missing a 40-footer.

Uihlein, who had previously competed in this event twice as an amateur, still was digesting the ramifications of the victory. Additional finals starts could ensure a high priority ranking in the coming PGA Tour season, and the winner of the finals earns a berth in the Players.

Not that he was planning to use his exempt status much this fall.

The only PGA Tour event he envisioned entering is the WGC-HSBC Champions in Shanghai, China, in late October, which also is an official event on the European Tour. “That’ll count for both,” he said. “[But] I haven’t even looked at next year’s schedule. Like, I have no idea when the last [finals] event is. I don’t know when the first event is [on the PGA Tour]. I don’t have a clue. I don’t know anything.”

Well, he does know he is ready for some American cooking. At least part time.

The epiphany struck him after competing in the Shell Houston Open, where he finished T-23 and then flew home to Jupiter, Fla., in time to watch his beloved Boston Red Sox—Uihlein is a Massachusetts native—play the New York Yankees.

“Yeah, this is the first year I’ve really, really wanted it,” he admitted. “First time in my professional career I was home on a Sunday night after playing on a Sunday. Never once have I done that. You kind of like to sit back and be like that’s pretty convenient. Boys are doing it all the time. That kind of hit home a little bit. So, I was like, I really kind of want to at least get my PGA Tour card so I can have moments like that when I can spend a little time at home with my girlfriend and two dogs.”

Ah, but the world still beckons. Uihlein, the son of Wally Uihlein, longtime CEO of Acushnet, parent company of Titleist, feels like a more grounded individual thanks to the frequent-flyer miles he’s accumulated the last five years.

“I've been very fortunate with my upbringing and who my father is, the opportunities I’ve had,” Uihlein said. “Bradenton in high school [at the IMG Academy] I was in a bubble. I go to college at Oklahoma State, you’re in a bubble. All of a sudden my first event as a pro, I end up on a plane to India. You go there for the first time, really not leaving the country very rarely, and all of a sudden you go to India, totally different. It’s a different world, different cultures. Just a different environment. You get to see things I never would have seen if I didn’t leave America. Like I said, it’s just some places that are just phenomenal.

“We play an event this year in China where you can see the Great Wall of China. Incredible.”

So, what’s next? Well, it could be Boise, Idaho, in two weeks for the second finals event. No walls, but great potatoes. Uihlein wasn’t sure, but it’s all gravy. Golf’s renaissance man hasn’t done much domestic reconnaissance, his mind programmed for the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship at St. Andrews followed by the Italian Open on the European Tour.

But again, he’s in an enviable position. And after recovering from surgery for a ruptured ligament in his left wrist in May 2016 and retooling his game to commit to hitting a fade—after playing a draw most of his career—he believes he has the game for wherever he ventures next. Beating a quality field on a tough track is “nice validation,” he said.

“This year in particular, with the way I’ve tried to change my game, I’ve become a lot more consistent,” Uihlein said. “It’s a good feeling to know that I can play golf just hitting it in one direction and eliminate one side of the golf course, which is something I’ve been just absolutely hammering. I really like where my game is headed.”

And that’s the most important direction of all. No maps or compasses needed. His game is headed upwards.

Uihlein, son of Titleist CEO, wins Madeira Islands Open, first pro title

Uihlein, son of Titleist CEO, wins Madeira Islands Open, first pro title

SANTO ANTONIO DA SERRA, Portugal -- Peter Uihlein of the United States won the Madeira Islands Open by two strokes after shooting a 4-under 68 on Sunday for his first career title in his 16th European Tour event.

Uihlein, the son of Titleist chief Wally Uihlein, birdied four of his last eight holes for a 15-under total of 273 at the Clube de Golf do Santo da Serra course. It was his third top-10 finish in seven European Tour events this season.

''I'm just thrilled,'' Uihlein said. ''To do it playing well on the back nine, coming down the stretch, is sweet. It was all putting that did it today. I was just trying to free up and they started to roll in.''

Morten Orum Madsen of Denmark blew his chances by hitting a double bogey on the 18th for a 67 to finish tied for second with Mark Tullo of Chile (71). Tullo started the final round as the overnight leader and got off to a good start by making a hole-in-one on No. 4, but he ended with four bogeys.

Craig Lee of Scotland (71) finished three shots behind Uihlein.

Having started the day one shot off overnight leader Tullo, Uihlein got off to a bad start as he bogeyed the first, but he atoned for that blemish with back-to-back birdies at the third and fourth.

The 2010 U.S. Amateur champion and former Oklahoma State star, could only watch, though, as Tullo found the cup with an 8-iron tee shot from 201 yards at the par-3 fourth.

After picking up another shot at the seventh, Uihlein was knocked back again with two consecutive bogeys just before the turn. But he came out fighting on the way back with four birdies, including three in a row from the 11th, which left him two shots clear on 15 under par.

The tournament might well have been decided by a playoff as Madsen was 15 under on the 18th tee after a stunning run that yielded eight birdies. But the 25-year-old suffered a double bogey on the last hole.

“I hit some good putts coming down the stretch,” said Uihlein. “When I was at the 17th I saw Morten was on 15 under and I thought it might have been a little more difficult, but when I got to the 18th green I obviously saw he had dropped back. I’m just delighted to have won.”

Uihlein admitted that his decision to begin his professional career on the European Challenge Tour and European Tour, on the advice of his father, was one of the best he ever made, believing he has developed both as a player and a as a man in Europe.

“A year ago I wasn’t even thinking about playing, I was just really struggling,” he said. “It’s a funny game. But I've learned a lot over the last year.   When you’re struggling, it’s one of those things, you hate it when it happens but it’s almost the best thing that could happen to you. It definitely was for me and I'm pretty happy with how things turned out.

“You grow up quick out here and that was the main reason I came over,” he added. “It’s been a good process so far and hopefully I can keep going.”

Tullo, meanwhile, was disappointed not have emerged victorious on the day he carded a 13th career ace, but the 35-year-old is happy with his game after a second top-5 finish on the European Tour this season.

“It was a very positive week,” said the Santiago native. “I could have won this tournament. I had three bogeys from 100 yards today which hurt a lot, but hats off to Peter. He played really on the back nine and that’s what you need to do to win tournaments.”

Peter Uihlein solves wind at Paiute, wins MGM Resorts Championship

Peter Uihlein closed with a 69 to finish at 16-under 272 on the Sun Mountain course at Paiute to win the Korn Ferry Tour’s MGM Resorts Championship by four strokes.

Peter Uihlein celebrates after winning the Korn Ferry Tour's MGM Resorts Championship on Sunday ...

Peter Uihlein came out firing, built a big lead, then coasted to victory Sunday at the inaugural MGM Resorts Championship at Paiute.

Uihlein, the only player to shoot all four rounds in the 60s in the Korn Ferry Tour event, closed with 69 to finish at 16-under 272 on the Sun Mountain course. Las Vegan David Lipsky and Jamie Lovemark finished four shots back.

“I just got off to a dream start,” said Uihlein, who won $108,000 from the $600,000 purse. “I made a nice par on 1, then birdied 2, 3, 4 and then 7. It was nice to get off to a start like that on the front.”

It was a start Uihlein needed given what Lipsky was doing. Playing 13 groups in front of the leaders, Lipsky challenged the course record, finished with a bogey-free 65 and posted 12 under while Uihlein was just beginning his day.

Lipsky’s score caught Uihlein’s attention.

“I got off to a great start, and then I saw David’s score,” he said. “From there on out, I knew what I had to do.”

Uihlein played what he called conservative golf after building a six-shot lead at the turn, but he refused to call it easy. With the wind gusting for a fourth consecutive day and the greens as fast as they had been all week, Paiute kept his attention to the finish.

The win is Uihlein’s second on the Korn Ferry Tour but first since 2017. He also has a European Tour title in 2013.

It’s validation for working hard over the past six months, said Uihlein, who seemed destined for greatness at a young age. His father, Wally Uihlein, was the longtime president and CEO of Acushnet, which includes Titleist, FootJoy and Scott Cameron among its golf brands.

Uihlein, 31, played college golf at NCAA powerhouse Oklahoma State, won the U.S. Amateur in 2010, but he hasn’t found as much success as a professional.

The Jupiter, Florida, resident hopes this victory is a step in the right direction. The points that come with it should get him close to the top 25 on the Korn Ferry standings and a promotion to the PGA Tour next season.

That promotion is something Lipsky has nailed down. Already inside the top 10 entering the week, his tie for second has sealed his status for 2022.

“To get my full-fledged PGA Tour card is awesome,” he said.

Lipsky’s round — and Uihlein’s, for that matter — were an anomaly Sunday when the wind was its strongest of the week. There were just 13 rounds in the 60s.

“It was tough, man,” Uihlein said of the wind. “But it was one of those things where everybody was playing in it, so you can’t stress about it. Nobody got it easy at any point.”

The conditions took their toll on two other Las Vegas players Sunday. Harry Hall, who was in contention the first three days, ballooned to a 79 to fall to a tie for 51st. Alex Kang, who started the final round in a tie for sixth, shot 76 and finished tied for 28th.

The quotation from the proud father was a version of Ralph Waldo Emerson’s famous words, ''Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.’'

The path of Peter Uihlein took him inside a cage below the surface of the Indian Ocean, where a Great White Shark with jaws wide open approached while closing in on a tuna. The jagged, triangular teeth gnashed at the tuna’s head against the cage, and the former U.S. Amateur champion could see black eyes roll over to white.

''That was the coolest,’' Uihlein said. ''When I knew I was going to South Africa, that’s the thing I’ve always wanted to do. We were in Mossel Bay. I was told it was a good cage dive, so we did it. We were out there for five hours. They chum up the water, and there were six or seven of them. It was incredible.’'

Uihlein spoke on his way from Gatwick to Wentworth, a familiar path for the best on the European Tour.

The 23-year-old out of Oklahoma State earned a spot in the BMW PGA Championship with his two-shot victory Sunday in the Madeira Islands Open in Portugal, his first win since he turned pro in December 2011 and set off on a course where few Americans venture.

It started with the Gujarat Kensville Challenge in India.

In the last 18 months, he has been to Korea and Kazakhstan, Finland and France, the Czech Republic and Copenhagen.

Uihlein tried Q-School on the PGA Tour as an amateur and didn’t get out of the second stage, leaving him no status on any tour. Most young Americans, especially with his pedigree as a U.S. Amateur champion and two-time Walker Cup player, would try to make the most out of sponsor exemptions on the PGA Tour, or even try to work their way up through the Web.com Tour.

Looking at golf through a wide lens, and with the advice of those who see golf on a global landscape, Uihlein headed to Europe and beyond.

His father is Wally Uihlein, chief executive of Acushnet, which makes Titleist golf equipment. His agent is Chubby Chandler of International Sports Management, whose stable began with Lee Westwood and Darren Clarke and now includes a couple of South African stars in Louis Oosthuizen and Charl Schwartzel . He began working with Butch Harmon and his son, Claude Harmon III.

There were times when travel, failures and solitude could have made him question what he was doing so far from home.

''Based on the guys I have around me – Butch, Chubs, my dad – they’ve been doing this a long, long time,’' Uihlein said. ''If they say it’s the right thing to do, who am I to question what they say? I had no doubts.’'

Frustrations?

''Name me one golfer that doesn’t get frustrated,’' he said with a laugh.

He says he is not the least bit envious of Jordan Spieth , the 19-year-old from Texas who started out trying to make it through sponsor exemptions. Spieth was closing in on Web.com Tour status when he tied for second in the Puerto Rico Open and tied for seventh in the Tampa Bay Championship , which earned him unlimited exemptions on the PGA Tour. He now has locked up his card for 2014.

Two years ago, Bud Cauley left Alabama and earned his card without ever going to Q-school.

''Those guys played well with the opportunity, and that’s what it’s about,’' Uihlein said. ''To do what Spieth did, you have to be a great player, and you have to be ready to come out and play well in a few events. They both played great. But for every one or two of those guys, there are 20 who don’t pull that off.’'

Before there was a Hogan Tour – now called the Web.com Tour – it made more sense for players without a PGA Tour card to travel the world in search of a game. That’s what Payne Stewart did. Corey Pavin spent his first year out of UCLA on the European Tour and won the German Open by beating Seve Ballesteros.

These days, the options range from the Web.com Tour, the eGolf Tour in North Carolina, the Hooters Tour in the South. Uihlein chose to travel to obscure outposts in golf, and even in some down times, there have been few regrets.

''It helps you grow up as a player and a person,’' he said. ''There are so many different variables every week. It’s all about becoming a more well-rounded player, and not a one-dimensional player. You might hear someone say, ‘Hilton Head sets up well for them.’ I don’t want that stereotype.’'

Uihlein started slowly. He made only one cut in the five European Tour events he played – a tie for 57th in the Avantha Masters in India – but at least secured status on the Challenge Tour, which is Europe’s version of the minor leagues.

It sounds exotic traveling the world, yet there were times when his confidence took a beating, just like any golfer. He withdrew from the Hassan Trophy after opening with an 83 and didn’t play for nine weeks. Part of that time was spent with Harmon in Las Vegas.

Harmon said the problems were his driving and confidence, and one was easier to fix than the other.

''He’s worked his butt off,’' Harmon said. ''The kid always has been able to play, he just lost his way a little bit. I’ve talked to Wally. We thought the European Tour was the way to go. Young kids get spoiled over here. You get over there, you play in bad conditions on different courses, and you appreciate it more. He’s doing the right thing, and I’m real happy for him.’'

With his win in Portugal, Uihlein now has a full European Tour card, which can only help get him to where he eventually wants to be, back home in America.

Even now, Uihlein is in no hurry. He is seeing the world. He is learning. He takes nothing for granted.

''If you’re OK with being a little lonely out there, it’s definitely the route,’' Uihlein said. ''It’s a different route for an American, but I think you’ll see it more and more.’'

Uihlein started this year by playing seven straight weeks that took him from India to South Africa to Kenya and back to South Africa for two weeks, and then to Puerto Rico and Florida before taking a five-week break. He shares a home in South Florida with Brooks Koepka, who plays the Challenge Tour in Europe, and Matt Broome, a childhood friend who is playing the PGA Tour Latinoamerica.

''We have a house rule that whoever wins a tournament has to buy a jet ski,’' Uihlein said. ''Brooks won a Challenge Tour event a few weeks ago. So now we’re going to have two jet skis at the house when I get home.’'

And then he’ll be back on the road again, leaving a trail.

EXCLUSIVE: Peter Uihlein – “one of New England’s most proficient golfers”

peter uihlein pga tour wins

MIAMI, Florida – LIV Golf Miami begins its fifth of 14 events April 5 at The Blue Monster at Trump National Doral. Thirteen teams of four will vie for the $3 million first prize ($750K apiece) of the $5 million purse, and these 52 individuals plus Wild Card additions Anthony Kim and Hudson Swafford will be shooting for the $4 million gold medal from the $20 million treasury.

On Wednesday at the famed layout, players showed up to work using the practice range to work on their short game and putting with a bit more relaxed approach as they prepared for the 54-hole event this weekend.

I exploited this day of relative calm for my own purposes and tracked down one of New England’s most proficient golfers ever, Peter Uihlein , and coerced him into a short but revealing interview. I am a fellow New Englander and had followed Peter’s green scorchings for many years before I first met him in March, 2012, at the Puerto Rico Open, his first professional event.

PETERUIHLEIN202411

Peter, now 34, lived in the Herman Melville whaling village of New Bedford, Massachusetts, and grew up under the tutelage of his father Wally Uihlein , CEO of Acushnet Company. I know almost all of us contributed to Peter’s upbringing with our purchases of Titleist and Foot Joy products, but I don’t begrudge the boy a single penny of that money I spent.

I just take a little more credit than I probably should for his golf achievements!

Peter learned the game at the Country Club of New Bedford, a classic Donald Ross par-69 venue. His two POY awards in the American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) along with other sterling youthful exploits earned him a scholarship in 2008 at Oklahoma State University alongside redoubtable teammates Rickie Fowler, Morgan Hoffman, Talor Gooch and Kevin Tway .

When he left OSU at the end of 2011, he had accumulated a 2009 Walker Cup 4-0 record, the 2010 US Amateur at Chambers Bay, WA, on his 21st birthday, the 2011 Ben Hogan Award for the best collegiate golfer in the nation, and 2011 1st Team All-American status.

peteruihleinamateur

He turned pro in December of 2011 and then played in that 2012 Puerto Rico Open. He missed the cut—but not many thereafter. He joined the European Tour in 2013, had eight Top 10’s, and was named the Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year. He won the Web.com Tour Finale in 2017, which propelled him onto the PGA Tour, where, in his first year, he won $1.8 million and finished No. 64 in the FedEx Cup standings. In 2018-19, he won $840K to finish 133 but lost his card, which he regained for the 2021-22 season.

However, Peter joined the LIV tour in June of 2022, where he first played on Brooks Koepka’s Smash GC team, then on Dustin Johnson’s 4Aces, before starting the 2024 season with Bubba Watson’s Range Goats. He has had 13 Top 24’s, eight Top 10’s, and three “ Trips to the Podium ” for his three 2nds. In his 26 events with LIV, Peter has earned a total of $24,845,926. Even Herman Melville would be impressed with the size of that catch! Now it’s time to catch up with Peter on what’s happening in his world.

Leigh MacKay : How has life been treating you on the Liv Tour?

Peter Uihlein : Life’s great! LIV does an unbelievable job for the players and the families, which really resonates with the players. LIV makes sure my wife and kids are comfortable during an event. Originally, I had to make a difficult decision, but now I love every minute of it.

LM : You had regained your card on the PGA Tour in 2022 but joined LIV in June. What influenced that decision?

peteruihleinpeter

PU : A lot of factors went into it. I wanted to return to the European Tour, but COVID put an end to that idea. Then I got on the PGA Tour again, but I wasn’t as happy as I had hoped to be although I loved my time on the Tour. And when LIV was in the offing, I thought it would be a good fit. A major point was the international travel because my wife Chelsea and I certainly enjoy that lifestyle. The timing proved to be perfect, and LIV became an opportunity I couldn’t pass up.

LM : Did you discuss the decision with your dad?

PU: Yes, we talked about it. I don’t want to speak for him, but he believes that competition is a motivating force, and he was never one to back down from a fight in his professional life. He felt like LIV was the right decision at that point in my career, and he said go for it.

LM: What goals have you set for LIV Golf League?

PU: To finish in the Top 10 each year in the Order of Merit. The fields are getting better, and the players, as you know, are quite good. So that one goal will be a tough one to fulfill.

LM: What is the camaraderie like on the Range Goats? Do you enjoy the team concept? That you can wear shorts? That the tournaments are only 54 holes? That the tee time is a shotgun start?

PU: It is a different experience. We are a new Range Goats team with Bubba, Thomas, and Matthew. And we have all done our own thing for a long time so that now we are trying to get used to each other. Bubba is an excellent captain and a good mentor, and I love the team concept, and it is fun. I would like LIV to place more emphasis on the team play. I do love the fact that I can wear shorts! 54 or 36 or 90 holes make no difference to me. Tell me how many to play, and I am all in. Yes, the shotgun is fair. We are all out on the course in the same conditions, so I am greatly in favor of that aspect.

LM: Are you concerned at all whether the LIV Golf League will eventually get Official World Ranking Points? What are your feelings about the possible but not definitive LIV merger with the PGA Tour?

PU: No, not at all. I think the LIV players are well past that point in their concerns. The talk surrounding the “ merger ” with the PGA Tour doesn’t affect me either. The golfers should be concerned with playing golf in the competitions, and the business people are the ones who should be concerned about the workings within the system. That’s my opinion.

LM: You have said that Ernie Els, who you followed growing up, is someone you greatly admire. Did you get to play with him often on the European Tour? What other pros did you get to play with, whom you also watched in your youth?

PU: I did get to play with Ernie, and the first time we played I shot 60 with him at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in Scotland! I always liked Ernie’s demeanor and swing, total composure, and global presence as I was watching him play as I was growing up. So playing with Ernie was always a treat for me. And I admired Adam Scott , too, for his personality and his performance and our relationship. And Sergio, too! Although he is bit more different than those two—more charismatic, a swashbuckler, perhaps.

LM: With your yen for international travel what are your favorite courses around the globe?

PU: Oh, a good question for great memories! In no special order, let me see: Lake Karrinyup CC in Perth and The Gorge GC in Adelaide—Australian golf is pretty cool. The Albatross Golf Resort in Prague, home of the Czech Masters. Hong Kong GC, a special favorite. Walton Heath GC in the UK. And Valderrama GC in Spain. By the way, my favorite course in the USA is just down the road from the CC of New Bedford in Plymouth, MA—Old Sandwich, a Coore-Crenshaw masterpiece.

livgolfmiami202488

LM: Do you still root for the Bruins, Celtics, Patriots, and Red Sox as you did when you were a kid?

PU: Oh, yes! Of course! I root for them all. But mainly now I will follow the Red Sox and the Pats, and I have also adopted the Miami Marlins because I live in Jupiter, Florida.

LM: Final question, anything you would like to say to your many New England fans who have watched you develop into one of the best professional golfers in the world?

PU: Yes. I have lived in Florida now for a long time, but I am still a New Englander at heart, and I am proud to be from Massachusetts. And I am proud to represent the blue-collar people, the hard workers like those that I grew up among in New Bedford. New England is a special part of the world for me.

peter uihlein pga tour wins

David Lipsky shot 21 spots up the leaderboard after a final-round 65 but neither he nor anyone else was going to catch Peter Uihlein at the MGM Resorts Championship at Paiute in Las Vegas.

Uihlein shot all four rounds in the 60s, capped by his final-round 69 on Sunday, to win on the Korn Ferry Tour at 16 under.

Uihlein, the 2010 U.S. Amateur champion, took the outright lead on Saturday at the Paiute Golf Resort’s Sun Mountain course and carried it over to Sunday for his first win since the 2017 Nationwide Children’s Hospital Championship.

Lipsky tied for second with Jamie Lovemark, who started the day one shot off the lead. Lipsky and Lovemark each finished 12 under. Taylor Moore was solo fourth at 10 under.

The four-way tie for fifth at 9 under included Aaron Baddeley, Braden Thornberry, Nick Hardy and Sean Tuten.

Up next on the Korn Ferry Tour is the Veritex Bank Championship at Texas Rangers Golf Club in Arlington, Texas.

Nelly Korda ties record with 5th straight win, gets 2nd major. Scottie Scheffler poised to win again

THE WOODLANDS, Texas — Nelly Korda tied an LPGA record with her fifth straight victory, closing with a 3-under 69 for a two-stroke victory in the Chevron Championship to capture her second major title.

Korda joins Nancy Lopez (1978) and Annika Sorenstam (2004-05) as the only players to win five consecutive LPGA events. Her previous major victory was in 2021 at the Women’s PGA Championship.

Korda held out to win over Maja Stark of Sweden, who birdied her final two holes to shoot 69 and pull within one. Korda stayed aggressive on the par-5 18th, easily clearing the lake in front of the green and setting up a simple up-and-down for birdie.

Haeran Ryu of South Korea shot a bogey-free 67 to enter the final round leading Korda by one. But she bogeyed the first two holes in the fourth round to fall out of the lead. She closed with a 74 and finished fifth.

Korda, who finished at 13-under 275, took home $1.2 million from a purse of $7.9 million, raising her season earnings to $2,424,216.

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. — Masters champion Scottie Scheffler holed a difficult pitch for eagle on his second hole Sunday and turned the RBC Heritage into another rout. A storm system with heavy rain stopped play for 2 1/2 hours, forcing a Monday finish.

Scheffler was 20 under and has a five-shot lead with three holes remaining when the final round resumes at 8 a.m. Monday. He was on the verge of winning for the fourth time in five tournaments, the exception a runner-up finish in the Houston Open.

He was trying to become the first player since Bernhard Langer in 1985 to win the week after slipping on the Masters green jacket.

U.S. Open champion Wyndham Clark made a furious charge early in the round at 8 under through 11 holes, only to lose ground with a double bogey in the trees. He posted a 6-under 65 and finished at 15-under 269.

Patrick Cantlay was tied for second at 15 under when he hit his approach to the collar of the 18th green. He chose to mark his ball and return Monday to finish. J.T. Poston also was on the 18th hole and among the group at 15 under.

None had a chance of catching Scheffler unless the world’s No. 1 golfer made a series of blunders in the morning, and that looked improbable.

PUNTA CANA, Dominican Republic — Billy Horschel went to the Dominican Republic for the first time in search of momentum and came away with a PGA Tour victory he sorely needed Sunday in the Corales Puntacana Championship.

Horschel ran off four straight birdies on the front nine to get in the mix, began to pull away with an eagle on the par-5 12th hole and closed with a 9-under 63 for a two-shot victory over Wesley Bryan.

Horschel, who started the final round three shots behind, all but sealed it with an 18-foot birdie putt on the 16th hole.

Bryan, trying to go wire-to-wire, was only one shot behind late in the round. But right after Horschel made his final birdie, Bryan missed a par par putt from just outside 2 feet and fell three behind. He birdied the 18th for a 68 and was runner-up.

Horschel finished at 23-under 265 and earned $720,000 for his eighth PGA Tour victory, and his first in nearly two years.

PGA TOUR CHAMPIONS

IRVING, Texas — Paul Broadhurst closed with a 5-under 66, playing bogey-free over the final nine holes to hang on for a one-shot victory over David Toms in the Invited Celebrity Classic for his sixth PGA Tour Champions title.

The tournament was reduced to 36 holes because of heavy rain that washed out Saturday.

Toms shot a 65.

Broadhurst, who finished at 11-under 131, had not won on the PGA Tour Champions since 2018, the year he won three times and his second senior major. The victory moves the Englishman to No. 2 in the Charles Schwab Cup behind Steven Alker, who did not play.

Y.E. Yang (69) and Thomas Bjorn (70) tied for third, three shots behind. Bjorn was playing on a sponsor exemption.

KORN FERRY TOUR

LAKEWOOD, Fla. — Tim Widing of Sweden won his first Korn Ferry Tour event when he closed with a 5-under 66 and won a three-man playoff with a par on the second extra hole in the Lecom Suncoast Classic.

Widing birdied the par-3 17th and finished with a par to get into a playoff with Patrick Cover (69) and Steven Fisk, who lost the lead with two bogeys only to birdie the 18th for a 68.

Cover was eliminated with bogey on the first extra hole at No. 18. Fisk made bogey the second time around.

Miles Russell, the 15-year-old from Florida who became the youngest player in Korn Ferry Tour history to make the cut, shot a 66 to tie for 20th. The top 25 get into the next tournament.

OTHER TOURS

John Catlin won for the second straight time on the Asian Tour. He closed with a 5-under 66 on Saturday for a wire-to-wire victory by seven shots over Wade Ormsby in the Saudi Open. The 33-year-old Californian now has two wins and a tie for third on the Asian Tour this year. Peter Uihlein, who finished third, had a 66-63 weekend and still lost ground to Catlin. ... Garrick Porteous won for the first time in seven years when he closed with a 7-under 63 for a one-shot victory over Alexander Levy in the Abu Dhabi Challenge. It was his second title on the Challenge Tour. ... Chiara Tamburlini of Switzerland finished off a dominant Ladies European Tour victory with a 3-under 70, seven shots ahead of Aunchisa Utama in the Joburg Ladies Open. ... Matthew Anderson of Canada birdied his last two holes on the Rio Olympic course for a 2-under 69 and a one-shot victory in the Brazil Open on the PGA Tour Americas. ... Rio Takeda won her second straight tournament on the Japan LPGA, shooting a third straight round of 4-under 67 for a three-shot victory over Mitsuki Kobayashi in the Fujisankei Ladies Classic. ... Eunwoo Choi closed with a 1-under 71 to successfully defend her title in the Nexen-SaintNine Masters on the Korea LPGA Tour.

PGA Tour winner and longtime Masters broadcaster Peter Oosterhuis dies at age 75

One day short of his 76th birthday, PGA Tour winner and former Masters broadcaster Peter Oosterhuis passed away on Thursday morning, according to the PGA Tour .

The Englishman won the 1981 Canadian Open but was probably more known as the longtime voice of the 17th hole at Augusta National during CBS’s annual Masters coverage. Oosterhuis retired from broadcasting in 2014 to deal with early-onset of Alzheimer’s. The London native earned seven wins on the European Tour in a two-year span from 1972-74 and was the rookie of the year in 1969. He also competed on six consecutive Ryder Cup teams from 1971-1981, where he boasts an overall record of 14-11-3. He twice defeated Arnold Palmer as part of his record-tying six Sunday singles wins.

Oosterhuis was the Director of Golf at Forsgate Country Club in Jamesburg, New Jersey, and Riviera Country Club outside Los Angeles from 1987-1993 and then tried his hand at broadcasting. He worked as lead analyst for Golf Channel’s European Tour coverage and then joined CBS, where he covered the Masters from 1997-2014.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth Ann, sons Rob and Rich, stepsons Byron and Matt and four grandchildren Peyton, Turner, Sutton and Lachlan.

Former PGA Tour winner Peter Oosterhuis dies aged 75

F ormer PGA Tour winner and long-time voice of the Masters, Peter Oosterhuis has passed away. The former golfer was 75 years old. The Englishman was on six straight Ryder Cup teams during his playing days. He played for Great Britain and Ireland as well as with others in later tournaments as the biennial event continued to evolve.

During his years with the Europeans, he defeated some of the best that the American side had to offer. That includes Arnold Palmer (twice, no less), Johnny Miller and Gene Littler.

He would go on to become a beloved broadcaster, working with CBS and other networks. Oosterhuis retired from that side of the game in 2014 to fight his battle with early-onset Alzheimer's disease.

Ultimately, he passed away on May 2, 2024. That is one day before his 76th birthday. He was born in 1948 and quickly became one of the top amateurs. He was the first schoolboy to represent Great Britain & Ireland at the Walker Cup.

Oosterhuis was a member of the Eisenhower Trophy team as well. He would eventually turn pro in the late 60s and win the 1969 Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year Award for the DP World Tour . He went on to really dominate, winning the Harry Vardon Trophy after leading its Order of Merit in four straight years beginning in 1971.

After several worldwide victories, Oosterhuis made his way to the United States and became a member of the PGA Tour. Surprisingly, he made his debut on tour in the 1971 Masters Tournament . He eventually played a total of 343 events for the tour.

Oosterhuis is still today tied for the all-time lead in Ryder Cup singles victories. He has six, the most anyone for either team has ever had.

Peter Oosterhuis had his best year in 1981

Peter Oosterhuis had a career that didn't stand out in history, but he still had one worth remembering. His best season came in 1981, when he finished 28th on the final money list.

He had come up just short with three runner-up finishes on tour that year before he broke through at the Canadian Open. He entered the final round down by three strokes, likely heading for another disappointment.

Instead, he he shot 70 under very difficult conditions to earn a one-stroke win. Jack Nicklaus, Bruce Lietzke and Andy North were tied for second, and Oosterhuis said of that victory via PGA Tour:

"What a way to win after watching those big names come in and mine still staying up there on the leaderboard. I am fortunate that the course is so tough. It allows no one to make a powerful finish."

In 1982, he finished runner-up for the second time at The Open Championship, coming behind Gary Player by four strokes. He would never go on to win another event and eventually decided to pursue other career options within golf. That included being Director of Golf at Forsgate Country Club and Riviera Country Club.

Liv golf embarks on its second tournament in as many weeks.

liv-golf-miami-signage-g.jpg

Following yet another successful event in Australia, LIV Golf is back at it again this week in Singapore. LIV Golf Singapore marks the second time in as many years that the 54-hole circuit will travel to the country, and it represents the league's final event before the second major championship of the season, the PGA Championship.

It will be at Valhalla in two weeks' time that Smash GC's captain, Brooks Koepka, will defend his Wanamaker Trophy. The five-time major champion has not experienced the fast start that he saw in 2023 before winning at Oak Hill, but he may have showed signs of things to come with a quality outing at last week's LIV Golf Adelaide.

Koepka hopes to build on the momentum he garnered at The Grange ahead of his major defense. Meanwhile, Cameron Smith's Ripper GC proved victorious in a playoff over Louis Oosthuizen's Stinger GC in the league's first-ever team playoff. The all-Australian squad scored their first victory together on home soil and aim to keep a good thing going this week.

Meanwhile, two-time major champion, Jon Rahm, continues to flash form but is without an individual crown to show for it. The world No. 5 is getting himself in position and is among the favorites to take home the trophy before eyeing his third different major championship.

Torque GC's Joaquin Niemann remains in fine form, as does Crushers GC's Bryson DeChambeau. Dustin Johnson will look to lean on his teammate, Patrick Reed, with their 4 Aces are sinking down the season-long standings with only six tournaments to go.

Polland wins PGA club pro title. Nineteen others advance to PGA Championship

  • Copy Link copied

FRISCO, Texas (AP) — Wyoming club pro Ben Polland atoned from a crushing loss in 2015 with steady golf in a tough Texas wind, closing with a 4-over 76 for a three-shot victory Wednesday in the PGA Professional Championship.

Polland and 19 other club professionals advance to the PGA Championship on May 16-19 at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky.

Among them will be Tracy Phillips, the longtime Oklahoma professional who will make his PGA Championship debut in two weeks at age 61.

Wyatt Worthington II of Ohio will be playing the PGA Championship for the third straight year by making it harder than it needed to be. He went from the 36-hole lead to rounds of 78-80 and claimed the 20th spot by making a 4-foot bogey putt on the par-5 18th at Fields Ranch.

Polland, the director of golf at Shooting Star of Jackson Hole, thought he had the PGA Professional Championship won in his debut in 2015. He took a two-shot lead to the final hole and made a double bogey, while Matt Dobyns made birdie for a three-shot swing to win.

“With what happened my first time, I always knew if I kept trying hard, working hard, I’d have a chance,” Polland said. “I can’t believe it’s done.”

He had an early wobble with a double bogey on the par-4 fifth hole. But then, everyone was struggling in a strong field on the West course.

Jeremy Wells of Crystal Lake Golf Club in Estero, Florida, was the only player to break par. His 70 moved him from a tie for 45th to a tie for eighth, earning a spot at the PGA Championship for the second straight year.

As usual, most of the drama was at the bottom in the battle for the final spots.

Braden Shattuck, the defending champion from outside Philadelphia, had not made a birdie the entire round and bogeys on the 16th and 17th hole put him into a large tie for 20th. He reached the green in two on the downwind closing hole, and his two-putt birdie gave him a 78. The birdie also knocked out five players from a playoff that would have decided the 20th spot.

Worthington extended the drama. He needed only a bogey on the 18th hole to secure a spot at Valhalla and hit iron off the tee to play it safe. But in a peculiar decision, he went for the green and came up short into a hazard. He took a penalty drop, hit wedge for his fourth shot some 30 feet long and rolled the par putt 4 feet by.

Worthington made the bogey putt for an 80, pulled his cap over his eyes and breathed a heavy sigh after a rough final 36 holes.

It was the second straight year the PGA Professional Championship did not require a playoff to determine the field of 20 club pros who earn spots at Valhalla.

Phillips is director of instruction at Cedar Ridge in Tulsa, Oklahoma, which has hosted LPGA Tour and LIV Golf events. Golf Digest rated him the No. 1 junior in 1979, and he went on to play at Oklahoma State. But after trying to play overseas, he switched to teaching and went 20 years without playing until his desire returned.

He played with Ernie Els in the Senior PGA Championship two years ago and called that a dream come true.

“Now I get to play with the younger guys and hit even more woods into greens than I did this week,” Phillips said. “Just to be able to do this is unbelievable.”

The PGA Championship will have 21 club pros. Michael Block of California tied for 39th at Fields Ranch. He already was exempt for the PGA Championship from finishing in the top 15 last year at Oak Hill.

Accomplished player, CBS golf analyst Peter Oosterhuis dies at 75

  • ESPN News Services

Peter Oosterhuis , a six-time Ryder Cup participant who later brought his distinguished British voice to CBS golf telecasts as an analyst, died Thursday, one day shy of his 76th birthday.

"Peter was an integral part of our golf coverage and an incredible teammate for nearly two decades," CBS Sports said in a statement. "... Peter brought a unique style and distinct perspective to our broadcasts which made him one of the most respected analysts in the sport. Our deepest condolences go out to his wife Ruth Ann and his entire family."

As a player, Oosterhuis was a force in Ryder Cup play, going 6-2-1 in singles -- twice beating Arnold Palmer and once Johnny Miller . His six wins remain tied for the all-time lead in singles.

He also was a two-time runner-up at the Open Championship and a two-time winner of the European Tour money title. He was ranked No. 1 in Europe for four years during a prolific rise to prominence that eventually brought him to the PGA Tour.

He won 20 tournaments around the globe and never declined an invitation to represent Great Britain in the Ryder Cup, where he had an overall record of 14-11-3 in all matches during an era of U.S. dominance.

Among his near-misses at majors were a 1-shot defeat to Tom Watson at the Open Championship in Royal Troon in 1982. He also tied for third at the 1973 Masters after leading for the first three rounds. The final round was played Monday because of weather issues, and Tommy Arnold claimed his only major title, beating J.C. Snead by 1 shot.

His breakthrough PGA Tour win was the 1981 Canadian Open, when he finished 1 stroke ahead of Bruce Lietzke , Andy North and Jack Nicklaus .

After his playing career, Oosterhuis became a broadcasting mainstay with CBS, including Masters telecasts from 1997 to 2014 when he frequently provided commentary from the 17th hole. He also served as an analyst for Sky Sports and Golf Channel.

Oosterhuis also served as golf director at Riviera Country Club near Los Angeles and Forsgate Country Club in New Jersey.

He announced his retirement from broadcasting in the summer of 2014 due to the diagnosis of early-onset Alzheimer's.

The London-born Oosterhuis was DP World Tour Rookie of the Year in 1969 and won the top player award on tour for four consecutive seasons (1971-74). In addition to three Southern Africa Tour titles, he won seven DP World Tour titles and became a full-time PGA Tour participant in 1975 as one of the first international players to assume a spot on the U.S.-based tour.

His best year on the PGA Tour came in 1981, when he finished 28th on the money list with $115,862.
