Highlights: Seal was great. The first part was around 10 songs from the Standards album (but not my favourite, I’m beginning to see the light, which I have on vinyl from the early 60’s by Eugenie Baird). All well performed and in good voice - I was a little concerned having seen his slot on Strictly Come Dancing; it was not convincing; but no worries here. And then the transition to his main hits...he became far more animated, going into the crowd, performing and singing really well and getting everyone up..We thought he felt much more at home, understandably. But he is a class act still with great presence. A good balance

Lowlights: what a terrible venue. It was freezing cold and everyone kept coats, scarves, hats & gloves on just about. The ushers ran about trying to get everyone seated and move the queues along. The seating, well! 114€ a ticket to sit on some chairs they've picked up from a school refectory - and worse, around 12 rows back, we were on the flat, so once people stood up we were also forced to stand like it or not. Also meaning we had to watch through a forest of arms with phones in their hands recording everything. The concert was supposed to start at 8pm; a guy came on did 5/6 songs and disappeared around 8:25, whereupon we sat, not the 5 minutes we all expected, but till 9 before he appeared. People were really ratty, with slow clapping, ironic cheeers when a roadie checked an instrument for the umpteenth time. Someone made the sound of the Dax band harking back to the old 5 Nations and got a great cheer. Good he didn’t release the cockerels, but at least that would have been worth it. All to no avail, we sat there freezing. Not a place to go back to through choice this. This also meant that Seal had to deal with all the grumpiness which he did very well, chatting to everyone, speaking Fraench and making lighthearted comments

9/10 for Seal and a very tight band - although during the second part the bass drum made such a vibration it was quite disturbing; fortunately they sorted that out. Nul points for La Seine Musicale; they need to go along to the U Arena and see how its done - a real professional operation there

What an incredible concert! What an amazing entertainer! It is more than enough that Seal has one of the most iconic and uniquely soulful voices on the planet; but he went above and beyond during this show. He wooed the audience, leaving the stage several times to wander deep into the crowd and sing/share his songs with throngs of adoring fans standing around him and cheering him on. He allowed the audience to do more than "watch a concert", rather he brought us all into the show with him and included us in the heartfelt emotion of his amazing songs. The show was personal, intimate, unifying and perfect! The Mountain Winery Venue is one of the best places to see a show in all of the San Francisco Bay Area. When you combine a Big Time Performer like Seal with a small and intimate venue like Mountain Winery, you are destined for a truly special and totally memorable evening! "Kiss from a Rose" was electrifying; "Prayer for the Dying" oozed with emotion, "Killer" and "Crazy" had me leaping out of my seat. Seal's "new" songs, which he performed early in the night, were so richly personal that I rushed out and bought his latest CD immediatly following the show. Thanks Henry Olusegun Adeola Samuel for a great night of entertainment; one I won't soon forget!!

Seal was such an awesome singer and really enjoyed his concert from beginning to the end. He played all of my favorite songs such as "Crazy" and "Kiss from a Rose". The audience was really grooving and moving to the music throughout the whole concert and they really got up and showed the passion they have for his music.

Seal as you can see really loves to perform and just allow everyone to enjoy his music as much as he loves to create it. The special effects and visualization were seriously incredible as well. They went very well with all his music and were awesome to look at and enjoy during his performance.

I got up one time and started singing during his "crazy" song and felt as if I was tripping on some acid as I sang and watched the incredible visualizations they had playing on the huge screen in the background. The venue was really nice and I enjoyed the seats when I sat down they gave me a break from standing and were very comfortable.

Although I'm sure not very many people care about the seats they do help at times. The concert was really great and I loved all the sounds and music he played along with the musicians he had playing with him.

This is the 3rd time seeing Seal and as always, he doesn't disappoint. His voice, song list, charisma, just awesome and gets the crowd going. Now the one thing that was quite exceptional about this concert was, earlier on during the day he met a girl called Poppy busking in the centre of Manchester. He ended up befriending her and sang with her drawing quite a crowd. After that he was speaking to her and low and behold, she opened the concert for him before he came on singing her own songs. I cant think of any other artist that has ever done that. I hope that has helped to make her dreams come true and any talent scouts spot her. He also had a guy called Rhys Lewis who was on before Poppy as well, he was awesome. No music published as yet to buy, but defo gonna keep an eye out for him. All in all was probably one of the best experiences as well as concerts, as Seal had been filming the events with Poppy on his facebook site live throughout the day so a lot of us saw the day progressing. Absolutely loved it, see u next time Seal

I have been a Seal fan since the beginning of his singing career. I really appreciate him giving a performance outdoors instead of indoors. The outdoor concert is more comfortable and enjoyable. His performance was outstanding, songs sung great sounding just like his albums. I really love the aucostic guitar performance. Seal is a very talented man who gave an outstanding performance.

The concert was amazing. Seal is a great artist. I highly recommend his live performances. We had an awesome night at the Ruth Eckerd. Thank you Seal! He sang all his great hits. The sound was amazing. The size of the theater was very goo for this kind of concerts.

The best of the new from the Standards album or the first half of the show followed by a fine selection of greatest hits.

Seal was on great form. His voice showing no signs of diminishing with age. This was our third time seeing him and it will not be the last

It was a good show but for as much money as we spent it was not worth it. He only played from 8:30-10:15. There were no encores. He spoke a lot and his voice was not tip top (because of a cold I presume).

His hit ‘Fly Like An Angel’, which featured on the soundtrack to Space Jam in 1996, recently also appeared in season five of Netflix series The Crown alongside hits by Mariah Carey , Lionel Richie and Edwyn Collins .

Meanwhile, Richie also recently performed at the  Coronation Concert to perform some of his biggest hits in front of the newly-crowned King Charles III and Queen Camilla.

However, following renditions of his songs ‘Easy Like Sunday Morning’ and ‘All Night Long’, the 73-year-old received some backlash from fans watching the broadcast at home, who were quick to point out how his vocals sounded different to what they expected.

Despite that he shared a series of online updates, showing him enjoying his time at the historic event .

Elsewhere, Carly Rae Jepsen previously revealed that she once watched – and covertly filmed – Seal eating a loaf of bread .

Jepsen explained that she was once on a jet with Seal and Michael Bolton en route to “some gala event” when she saw Seal devour a full loaf of gluten-free bread – plain.

“Fun fact, Seal ate an entire loaf of bread one slice at a time. I’m sorry. I shouldn’t say that,” she told Zane Lowe. The Beats 1 host replied: “Who is this person? Oh my God.”

Jepsen continued: “It was gluten-free though. So that’s good,” to which Lowe replied, “It’s totally acceptable. One slice, very deliberately.”

TOPANGA, CALIFORNIA - August 25, 2023: Seal, a British singer, songwriter and record producer, poses for a portrait at his home. (Photo by Philip Cheung for The Guardian)

Seal on homelessness, hits and love: ‘My father gave me one beating too many – and I was out the door’

After 30 years in music, the man who sang Crazy, Killer and Kiss from a Rose still hasn’t come to terms with fame. He talks about life in a shelter, the celebrity ‘circus’ – and almost becoming a fashion designer

O n his 60th birthday earlier this year, Seal thought he had died. Opening the door to a friend’s house, the singer was confronted by 200 people from every aspect of his life – his old manager Rob Cavallo, who he hadn’t seen for 18 years, his sister, children, housekeeper and even the tennis coaches he had hired to lead a boot camp years previously. “They say that when you die you will see all the people who love you,” he says, “and for a split second, that’s where I thought I was.”

He came to from the shock and swiftly had another realisation. “There was only one reason they were all at this party, these people that I was really fond of and people I thought I was more fond of than they were of me; it’s because they love me and they cared enough to make the effort. It was a rare moment where I faced the reality that I am worthy of being loved. And that was just too much – it was really overwhelming.” He spent much of the rest of that night crying.

If there is one thing you should know about Seal, real name Seal Henry Olusegun Olumide Adeola Samuel, it is that he loves love. Over the course of our 45-minute conversation, he says the word 36 times. Since the release of his eponymous 1991 debut album, he has sold more than 20m records thanks to the soaring, huskily soulful vocals that expound on every aspect of the romantic condition. There is the addictive infatuation of Kiss from a Rose (1995), the need for a unifying, human connection on Killer (1991) and the nourishing, healing importance of love itself on, you guessed it, 2015’s Love.

Seal, a British singer, songwriter and record producer, poses for a portrait at his home.

“What else is there to sing about?” he says in his signature baritone, still with the twang of his London upbringing even though he has lived in the US for the best part of 20 years. “No one wants to hear me singing about the woes of the world or about how depressed I have been. It has to circle back to love. It is at the centre of everything I do.”

It is a tactic that has paid off for Seal, who is holed up in a Malibu studio working on new material, on a short break from his world tour celebrating three decades since the release of his first two albums. During our video call he is also trying to eat breakfast while battling an ant infestation across his desk. There is clearly a lot going on, yet for Seal there are always bigger things at stake, such as homing in on the inspiration for his next songs.

“Whenever I think back on all the records that I have made, the value has been in the process, not in the end result,” he says. “I don’t really care what happens to it afterwards because it is out of your hands. It is about the incredible moments where you are in a room with your favourite players and they do something that is magical, then you harness that energy for the record.”

He talks excitedly about a new song the band has been working on that explores the idea of home and how it is a feeling you carry with you, as much as a place that you return to. It’s a poignant subject for Seal to explore.

Born to a Nigerian mother and Brazilian father in London, he was raised by a foster family in Essex until he was four. When he returned to his biological family, Seal had to share a home with his physically abusive father. By the time he was 15, he had run away; he spent the ensuing years couch-surfing with friends or sleeping in homeless hostels while he took a grant to go to college.

Seal, a British singer, songwriter and record producer, poses for a portrait at his home.

It is touching, I comment, that he has dedicated his life and career to the healing power of love when his childhood and teenage years seem so marked by a difficulty in accessing it. “Much has been made, perhaps through my own fault, about my ‘difficult’ upbringing,” he says, putting air-quotes around the word “difficult”. “But it wasn’t that difficult. In retrospect, I was extremely fortunate. It was a bit of a patchwork family and I could have done with a father that wasn’t that abusive or violent, but as soon as I was 15, I escaped. He gave me one beating too many and I was out the door living it large in London, becoming an adult.”

The more we speak, the more he shows his resilience and his remarkable capacity to find good in the hardest of times. “I had the benefit of foster parents who loved me for those formative years of my life,” he continues. “I slept on friend’s floors, I slept in homeless shelters and there were at least those facilities for me to take advantage of. In fact, I currently work with an [adoption and social care] charity called Vista Del Mar and when you look at some of the kids in those places, they have fuck all. They are told that they are insignificant and they’ve been completely and utterly abandoned. That’s a real difficult childhood. Mine was nothing like that.”

He speaks enthusiastically about Mr Wren, a primary school teacher who first encouraged him to sing and gave him his earliest opportunity to perform in front of his parents at a school concert aged 11. “He dressed cool, looked cool and he took an interest in me. I started singing because he sang and I wanted to be like him,” Seal says. “Throughout that ‘difficult’ time in my childhood, he was there and he saw me when few other people did. He took the time to inspire me, to push me.”

After that a cappella school hall performance of Johnny Nash’s standard I Can See Clearly Now, Seal viewed his singing talent largely as a hobby and party trick, rather than a calling. He left home and, after his father’s death when he was 17, he pursued a diploma in architecture before briefly considering becoming a fashion designer. It was another chance encounter that nudged him fully into music. “There was a girlfriend I had at the age of 23 who convinced me that I was wasting my time trying to be a fashion designer,” he says. “She heard me sing for the first time and took me straight down to Tottenham Court Road, bought me a drum machine and Portastudio recorder, gave me a clip round the ear and said: get on with it, stop wasting your time. I didn’t want to hear it, but it is one of the most sound pieces of advice I ever had.”

Seal in the Netherlands in 1991, shortly after the release of his first album.

There followed dozens of tentative pub gigs and a stint spent touring in Japan as part of the funk band Push , where Seal began to perfect his onstage vocal skills and status as a captivating frontman. He was “always writing new stuff, since it never switches off”, and after the Push tour ended he stayed on for a year travelling in Asia, playing in a blues band in Bangkok while writing the demos that would eventually make up his multimillion-selling debut album.

Returning to London in 1989 for the birth of the DIY rave scene and the warehouse parties that produced acid house, Seal met the electronic producer Adam Tinley, AKA Adamski, and wrote lyrics to one of his more downtempo backing tracks. The anthemic result, Killer, became a dancefloor and chart hit, spending a month at No 1 in the UK and leading to a record deal with the producer Trevor Horn.

The pair embarked on a long and sometimes tumultuous relationship, ultimately producing six records including the multi-platinum Seal and Seal II. The second featured the power ballad Kiss from a Rose, which became Seal’s entry into the American market after the director Joel Schumacher put it in the end credits for his 1995 film Batman Forever. It reached the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100 and won three Grammys in 1996. Horn has returned as musical director on Seal’s world tour and the rekindled partnership has Seal ruminating on his journey. “I mainly just feel lucky that I was able to sing my way out of poverty and sing my way into people’s favour,” he says. “The last 30 years of my life have been exceptional – I have done things I could have only dreamed about.”

Not that global success hasn’t come with challenges. After meeting the model Heidi Klum at a party in 2004, the pair began dating and soon married. They had three children together, all under constant tabloid scrutiny. There are dozens of articles speculating on their yearly ritual of vow renewals , the reasons for their eventual split in 2012 and even their finances . “It was a pain in the arse,” he says. “I can’t stand the word celebrity because it has such a negative connotation of implying being famous for the sake of being famous. As far as I was concerned, I was always a musician and I have never considered myself a celebrity. I don’t need to look in OK! magazine to understand who I am. I am no longer in that circus.”

Instead, he is focusing on his true calling. That is, of course, to make people “lean in with love”. “When I perform, I sing to remind people to connect with each other because I have a lot of faith in us as a species,” he says. “I think we do some pretty screwed-up things, but at our core we are of love and that is the purpose of life. The fact that I can sing and have that love reciprocated is extremely rare. I do for a living something that, in essence, is who I am.”

Seal, a British singer, songwriter and record producer, poses for a portrait at his home.

To support all this, he spends an hour with his vocal coach every day and is an avid tennis player, using his training sessions to stay physically and mentally fit enough to tour. “Tennis is an allegory for life. A lot of the time, a tennis player is competing against themselves, not the other person,” he says. “You have to work daily on your technique and you have to go through the repetition in order to let go. It’s the same as singing, where technique is only there to prevent the body from interfering with the soul’s free expression. When I walk up to the mic and open my mouth, I’m letting go and trusting that I will be caught by the hours of preparation that I have put in. I am trying to relinquish control.”

All this leaves me wondering one thing: if embodying, giving and receiving love is so central to Seal’s existence, then why was it so shocking to be confronted by so much of it at his 60th birthday party? “It was a teaching moment,” he says, somewhat cryptically. “I have to accept that people are there because they care. If for some reason my time actually was up now, I would not be looking back on my life saying, ‘God, what a waste.’ I would say my first couple of years were a bit rocky but, man oh man, did you make up for it.”

15 beaches and seal colonies in the UK for seal watching

The coastal waters of the UK and Ireland are home to two breeds of seals that can be seen from coastal cliff paths and beaches. Grey seals and common (harbour) seals have established thriving colonies dotted along the rocky shores and secluded beaches making them perfect for safe seal watching.

This guide provides key information on the seal species found in the region, their behaviours and life cycles. I will share the prime locations to spot each type of seal and view the impressive colonies. From the remote sea caves of the Outer Hebrides to the bustling island shores of Orkney , a magical seal-watching adventure awaits all without leaving the UK.

Largest seal colonies in England

England hosts robust populations of both common and grey seals along its shores. Here are some of the top areas to spot seals:

Donna Nook, Lincolnshire

Donna Nook has one of the largest grey seal colonies in England, with over 1,000 pups born each year. The viewing area offers close vantage points to observe seals lounging on the sandbanks, especially during the November to December breeding season.

Docile cows nurture their white fluffy pups in full view, while the bulls make their loud vocal displays, competing for control of harems. Early mornings typically provide the best light for photography.

Blakeney Point, Norfolk

On this remote spit in Norfolk lies an impressive colony of common and grey seals. Seals can be seen hauled out on the shingle beach or swimming in the inlet.

The miles of sand dunes and salt marshes create a beautiful surrounding landscape. Boat trips run regularly for closer viewing. Spring and autumn are ideal times to spot seals.

Horsey Beach, Norfolk

Horsey Beach on the Norfolk coast transforms into a bustling seal nursery every winter, offering remarkable opportunities to safely observe over 1,000 common and grey seal pups up close from behind fences.

Mothers can be seen nurturing their newborns within the sand dunes as the pups grow and learn to swim in the ensuing weeks. With a picturesque backdrop of windswept dunes and charming beach huts, Horsey Beach allows visitors to admire seal colony life in a protected habitat.

Hunstanton, Norfolk

Hunstanton Beach is the most popular spot for seal-watching in the area. You can often see seals sunbathing on the sand or swimming in the water. You can also see seals from the top of the Hunstanton Cliffs. This is a great way to get a panoramic view of the beach and the seals.

Finally, Hunstanton Nature Reserve is home to a variety of wildlife, including seals. You can often see seals basking on the rocks or just offshore. The SeaLife Centre in Hunstanton has rescued seals throughout the year helping them recover and return to the wild.

Farne Islands, Northumberland

Home to over 3,000 grey seals, the Farne Islands have one of the largest seal colonies in Britain. Boat tours allow you to get exceptionally close views of seals lounging on rock formations or swimming in the sea. Accessible yet rugged, the islands make seal spotting easy. Prime season is September through November.

Lundy Island, Devon

A more remote and rugged landscape, Lundy Island has a small but growing Atlantic grey seal colony. Requiring an island ferry trip, Lundy offers a sense of adventure and discovery. Fewer crowds allow for intimate seal encounters.

The winter and spring months are best for sightings although for diving and snorkelling and an easier crossing, the summer is the best time to visit.

Seal colonies in Scotland

Scotland provides some of the most magnificent backdrops for spotting seals amid its islands and sea lochs. Key areas include:

Isle of May, Firth of Forth

The Isle of May boasts Scotland’s biggest colony of grey seals. A National Nature Reserve, the island offers ranger-led seal tours during pupping season from October to January.

Cliff-top vantage points provide views of seals hauled out on rocks or swimming near the island. The Isle of May is located just a 1.5-hour boat trip from Edinburgh and is one of the easiest seal spots to reach in Scotland.

Orkney Islands

The Orkney archipelago is scattered with small islands hosting significant grey seal populations. Ideal spots include South Ronaldsay, Brough of Birsay and around Scapa Flow. On the island of Westray, seals can be spotted on the beach in the main village of Pierowall.

Driving around the islands can be an easy way to spot seals as they can be seen hauled out on the rocks that run along the shoreline close to the main roads or bobbing in the water watching human activity.

Shetland Islands

While the Shetland Islands are considered more of a common seal habitat, grey seals are also spotted throughout the rugged coastlines. Seals can be seen swimming near the dramatic cliffs and stacks all around the coast while the secluded bays and natural harbours are home to a large number of seals.

Outer Hebrides

The remote Outer Hebrides chain provides excellent grey seal watching along its exposed beaches. Loch Eynort on South Uist is a great location to see seals hauled out along the shore while Stornoway Harbour in Lewis is a seal spotting location in the north of the islands. Boat operators offer tours to see seals up close.

Inner Hebrides

The Inner Hebrides host grey seal colonies on smaller rocky islands like Canna , the Treshnish Isles, the Garvellachs, and more. Local kayak and wildlife cruise operators can help visitors spot seals. Exploring the coast of Mull will always reward a seal sighting at some point so it is always worth scanning the water close to the shore.

Where to see seals in Wales

Although less populated than England and Scotland, Wales still provides delightful seal-watching opportunities. Key spots include:

Ramsey Island, Pembrokeshire

Ramsey Island has a small colony of Atlantic grey seals that haul up on its beaches. Boat tours from St Davids offer chances to admire these local Welsh seals.

Pembrokeshire Coast

Various locations along the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park offer grey seal sightings, especially in late summer when they pup. Strumble Head , Abereiddy, and Porthgain are prime spots.

Where to spot seals in Northern Ireland

Ireland’s coastlines house both grey and common seals. Prime areas to spot them include:

Rathlin Island, Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland’s largest seabird colony is also home to a resident population of common seals. They can often be seen sunbathing on the rocks around the island’s coastal shores.

Strangford Lough, Northern Ireland

This scenic inlet contains a community of common seals. Boat tours provide opportunities to admire these seals up close in their sheltered habitat. Peak season is May to August.

Murlough Bay, Northern Ireland

Though less reliable, both common and grey seals have been observed occasionally hauling out on the sand and rocks around this remote protected beach.

Common seal or grey seal – How to tell the difference

Two species comprise most of the seal population across the UK and Ireland – the common seal and the larger grey seal. Though they share aquatic habitats, there are distinguishing characteristics between the types.

They will often be found together and it is often difficult to distinguish between the two at first glance but spending time with them will allow you to identify not just different species but individuals as well.

The larger of the two seal species, the grey seal ( Halichoerus grypus ) can grow over 2.5 metres long and weigh up to 310 kilograms. They are identified by their elongated snout and mottled grey to silver coats.

Grey seals are found predominantly in the northern coastal waters of the UK and Ireland. Major colonies exist off the coasts of Scotland, with significant populations also in England and Wales.

From October through December, grey seals come ashore to form breeding colonies and give birth to their young. The females, called cows, give birth to a single pup with a white silky coat. The pups nurse for 2-3 weeks while the mother does not eat, sustaining herself on fat stores.

The pups nurse for 2-3 weeks while the mother does not eat, sustaining herself on fat stores. The bond formed between a cow and her pup during this time is quite strong.

Grey seal pups remain on shore for several weeks after weaning, spending time in loose groups with other pups. During this time they shed their white coats and develop their adult fur, learning to swim and hunt. Most pups venture out to sea on their own around 6-10 weeks old.

Adult males, known as bulls, come ashore in late autumn to establish their breeding territories. They compete for the best rocky perches, vocalizing with loud calls and posturing to defend their areas from rivals. When the cows arrive, the bulls gather harems on the beaches below.

Grey seals can live over 25 years on average. They spend most of their lives at sea, only coming on shore briefly to breed and moult. Their feeding grounds range widely based on available fish stocks, sometimes embarking on long migrations.

Common Seals

In contrast to the grey seal, the smaller common seal ( Phoca vitulina ) has a more southerly range. They are frequent along the coasts of England and Ireland, with significant populations in areas like Norfolk and Strangford Lough.

Common seals reach about 1.85 meters in length and 145 kilograms in weight. Their coats are smooth and spotted, ranging from brown to tan to silvery-grey.

Unlike grey seals that gather in large breeding colonies, common seals give birth alone on protected beaches and tide flats. Pups are born from May to July with creamy white fur. They nurse for 4-6 weeks before their mothers wean them, spending more time learning to fish on their own.

Common seals reside closer to shore than greys, usually hunting within 45 kilometres of their haul-out sites. They consume a diversity of small fish, crustaceans and cephalopods. Adult common seals may migrate seasonally along coastlines following prey.

Responsible seal watching

When visiting seal colonies, be sure to follow responsible wildlife viewing guidelines:

  • Observe from a distance using binoculars or telephoto lenses. Never approach resting seals.
  • Keep noise to a minimum and avoid making sudden movements.
  • Follow warning signs and only view from designated areas.
  • Pay attention to seal behaviour – if they look alert or uneasy, give them more space.
  • Never feed, touch, or interact with the seals in any way.
  • Keep dogs and drones far away from haul-out sites.
  • Avoid seal colonies during pupping seasons or other sensitive times.
  • Learn proper etiquette from local guides, rangers or local information boards.

What time of year is the best time to see seals in the UK?

The best time to see seals in the UK is during the summer months, from June to September. This is when the seals are most active and when the weather is warmest. However, seals can be seen year-round in the UK.

What to do if you see an injured seal

If you see an injured seal, here are a few things you should do:

  • Stay calm and do not approach the seal.  Seals are wild animals and can be unpredictable. Approaching a seal could make it feel threatened and could lead to it biting or scratching you or a mother abandoning her pup.
  • Call the RSPCA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) on 0300 1234 999.  The RSPCA will be able to send someone to rescue the seal and take it to a wildlife rehabilitation centre or arrange for a Marine Mammal Medic to come and assess the seal.
  • If the seal is in immediate danger, such as if it is caught in fishing gear or if it is being attacked by another animal, you can try to ensure its safety.  However, only do this if you are sure that you can do so safely.
  • Do not feed or touch the seal.  Feeding or touching a seal can spread disease and can also make it more difficult for the seal to be rescued.
  • If the seal is in a public place, such as a beach or a park, try to keep people away from it . This will help to protect the seal and will also help to prevent people from getting hurt.

By following these guidelines, you can help to ensure that injured seals receive the care they need. If the seal is too unwell to be left it will be taken to a rescue centre.

Seal Rescue Centres in the UK

These centres rely on public support and are always seeking volunteers to assist with seal care and education. They provide a valuable service in giving injured, distressed or abandoned seals a second chance at life in the wild.

  • Hillswick Wildlife Sanctuary in Shetland Islands – Smaller rescue providing emergency aid to seals and other wildlife in the northern isles.
  • Cornish Seal Sanctuary in Cornwall – Provides emergency first aid and longer-term care for seal pups in distress. They have helped rehabilitate and release hundreds of grey seals.
  • RSPCA East Winch Wildlife Centre in Norfolk – Takes in rescued and injured common and grey seals found along the East Anglia coast. They rehabilitate the seals until they can be released back into the wild.
  • Scottish SPCA National Wildlife Rescue Centre near Huntly – Cares for sick, injured and orphaned seals from across Scotland, with the goal of releasing them.
  • Scarborough SEA LIFE Sanctuary – This seal sanctuary takes in and rehabilitates both common and grey seals found sick or injured along the Yorkshire coast and surrounding areas. They have an emergency seal hospital on site and aim to eventually release rescued seals.
  • Hunstanton SEA LIFE Sanctuary – Similar to the centre at Scarborough this small centre takes in seals from around Norfolk
  • RSPCA Stapeley Grange Wildlife Centre – Located in North Yorkshire, this wildlife centre has rehabilitated and released grey seals stranded or rescued from Yorkshire beaches. They also take in other marine mammals like porpoises.
  • Seal Rescue Ireland in County Wexford – Seal rescue centre focused on the rehabilitation and release of grey and common seals.

Conservation and protection of seals in the UK

Common and grey seals are protected species in the UK, and there are a number of organisations working to protect them.

One of the main threats to common and grey seals is disturbance from humans. This can include things like people getting too close to seals, or boats and other vessels making noise and waves that can disrupt seal behaviour.

To help reduce disturbance, there are a number of designated areas where people are asked to stay away from seals, such as haul-out sites (where seals rest on land) and pupping areas. There are also signs and information boards in place to help educate people about how to behave around seals.

Another threat to common and grey seals is pollution. This can include oil spills, which can coat seals’ fur and make it difficult for them to stay warm and swim. It can also include chemicals that can build up in seals’ bodies and harm their health. To help reduce pollution, there are a number of regulations in place to control the use of harmful chemicals and to prevent oil spills.

Common and grey seals are also affected by climate change. Rising sea levels are causing some seal colonies to lose their breeding grounds, and changes in ocean temperature and currents are affecting seal prey populations. To help address climate change, there are a number of organisations working to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to develop adaptation strategies for wildlife.

In addition to the threats mentioned above, common and grey seals can also be injured or killed by fishing gear, or by being hit by boats. If you see a seal that is injured or in distress, please contact the RSPCA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) on 0300 1234 999.

Observing seals in their natural coastal habitats provides an unforgettable and rewarding experience for travellers. Witnessing seal behaviours and family dynamics is a true privilege.

The UK and Ireland offer some of the best vantage points to admire both common and grey seals, with colonies dotting the beaches, islands, and sea lochs. From the hustle and bustle of Donna Nook to the remote solitude of Shetland, a diversity of memorable seal encounters await.

When visiting, be sure to respect the seals, give them ample space, and follow responsible viewing guidelines. The future of these colonies depends on our ability to appreciate seals from a distance and minimize disturbance.

With amazing coastal scenery as a backdrop, seeing seals in their element creates a cherished travel memory. Whether you delight in watching pups playfully learning to swim, males competitively vying for mates, or pairs serenely sunbathing on the rocks, observing seals connects us to the wonders of nature.
