Whether you’re a beginner skier or advanced snowboarder, skiing with friends or a solo traveller, they can help with everything you need to know about life on the slopes.

We arrange everything for you

When you join an Intrepid snow adventure everything is arranged so all you have to do is choose your favourite slopes and hit the snow. You can also stay right on the mountain with ski fields outside your front door or even under the world’s largest International Dark Sky Reserve in New Zealand . Add plenty of fun places to visit nearby and you’ve got the perfect trip.

Experience a variety of snow destinations

What’s better than skiing or snowboarding on a fantastic field? Hitting the snow at multiple snow spots on the one trip. On an Intrepid group ski and snowboarding holiday, you can try up to five different snow fields on the same tour in Queenstown and beyond. With trips ranging from 5 to 12 days, there’s more than enough on-snow action to satisfy even the keenest skier.

Ski on private club fields

Your ski trip with Intrepid gives you access to local ‘untamed’ ski areas known as ski clubs or private fields with uncrowded slopes and no lift queues. If you want to soak up the old-school vibe of a traditional ski experience, these not-for-profit clubs are the perfect spot. Skiing and snowboarding at a private field also increases your chances of making fresh tracks on pristine powder snow.

I am a beginner (or an expert). what trip should i choose.

We have options for beginner and intermediate/expert skiers and snowboarders alike. If you are a beginner then our Ski New Zealand: 7 Day South Island Snow Safari is for you. We throw in 2 beginner lessons free and can arrange more if you want them. It’s also a great option for more advanced snow lovers as well. If you are looking to get off groomed snow and away from the crowds to test your intermediate to advanced skills on untamed and uncrowded terrain, then our Ski New Zealand: 5 Day South Island Snow Explorer or 12 day Ski New Zealand: South Island Snow Odyssey is for you.

These are guided group trips, will I always be skiing or boarding in a group?

Alongside organising all the logistics of your trip our friendly local leaders will always join the group on the snow, but due to the nature of the terrain and our customers’ personal ski run preferences, they cannot be with everyone in the group at all times. Think of them as personal mentor you will always give you the best advice on where to go based on your abilities and preferences. While ‘sure’ is their default answer, they also always know when it is best to say ‘no’ too.

What happens if a mountain is shut?

In the mountains the weather has the final say, and your safety is our primary concern. We make amendments to our tour route on the rare occasions that any mountains are shut or have very poor conditions - going to a different mountain if at all possible.

I don’t want to bring my own gear. Can I hire it locally?

We get it, lugging your own gear around, especially when coming from overseas, can be a painful and expensive experience. So let us take care if it with our extensive range of high-quality rental gear options. We have packages available for ski and board hire (which includes skis/board, boots and poles), helmet hire or even winter snow clothing. Just let us know what you need and collect it on day one to keep with you for the entire trip – no more changing equipment as you go move between ski fields. Best of all, we’ll even return it for you at the end of your holiday.

Do I need special insurance?

Policies vary but we strongly recommend double checking with your insurer that they cover ‘adventure activities’ such as skiing and snowboarding, as many popular insurers have this as an optional extra rather than included. This is especially important if your itinerary includes off-piste skiing/boarding or heli-skiing.

Skiing and Snowboarding

New Zealand is a winter wonderland with snow experiences, world-class ski schools and ski packages in the north and south to suit every level of skier or snowboarder.

Head to the mountains for the snow or nearby towns for accommodation close to ski fields, and find transport to the slopes, relaxation and hospitality all in one place.

North Island skiing and snowboarding slopes

The North Island season starts and finishes a little later than the South Island (which starts in late June and finishes in October).

New Zealand's largest commercial ski resort  Mount Ruapehu (opens in new window)  is the North Island's winter drawcard, with Whakapapa and Tūroa ski areas offering slopes for beginners, and more advanced skiers and snowboarders can enjoy great free ride terrain.

South Island skiing and snowboarding fields

For awesome freeriding, you can't go past The Remarkables (opens in new window) in Queenstown. This ski field has terrain for snowboarders of all abilities with slopes that offer both wide-open pistes and well-groomed trails. Ohau - a ski area between Christchurch and Queenstown has a great choice of steeps and excellent riding for all levels.

New Zealand is also one the best places to experience skiing for the first time. There are qualified instructors at each of the South Island's resorts that offer both group and private lessons for skiing and snowboarding.  There are ski shops in Queenstown, Wanaka and Methven that rent out all the equipment you need including boots, boards, skis, clothing and helmets. Or if you prefer to get your equipment on the mountain then all the resorts have ski hire too. 

Not sure what to wear? Layers are best. A base layer, mid layer and outer layer or shell are good options as you can dress up or down depending on the temperature. Thermals are a must if you feel the cold and neck warmers to protect against the wind. Don’t forget sunscreen! The UV rays reflected off the snow are almost three times as strong as those reflected at the beach.

7 reasons to book your ski holiday with a snow specialist agent

The internet changed the way we live and travel. From paying bills to booking flights, the web has made “almost” everything better. But has it done the same for snow travel?

Sure, we can see real time snow conditions via web cams and social media but what about booking a full blown snow holiday? While many spend hours and hours researching every element of their snow journey to the minute detail, booking flights, hotels, transfers, tickets on separate sites others prefer the convenience and knowledge of snow specialist travel agents.

Yes we realise this already sounds like an ad for ski specialists, but it’s not. The truth is, many resorts host travel agents on what the industry terms as “famils.” This means the resort shows off their best so travel agents have first hand and local experience of everything on offer and can then pass that on to you.

“The internet provides a very cookie-cutter ski package with separate bookings for accommodation, flights, lift tickets. But a ski holiday is much more than that!” says Lucy Wales, Marketing Manager for Skimax Holidays . 

“Working with a ski travel specialist enables you to create a tailor-made snow experience, using their first-hand knowledge.”

A generic travel site that doesn’t understand ski and snow can’t do that. 

So we asked Australia’s best known ski specialists why skiers and snowboarders should book through specialists rather than tough it out on their own. Some reasons are obvious, I mean, we did ask specialists to tell us why to use them after all, but others are pleasantly surprising for those who think booking direct is the only way to save money. 

Guaranteed exchange rate saves you dollars

Beware the crumbling dollar. Since April alone, the AUD has weakened against the JPY by 6 percent. So if you haven’t paid your hotel yet or simply handed over your credit card to secure the accommodation nights, then you’re in for a nasty surprise when your card is charged. 

“Often when people book accommodation online, they will pay directly once they are at the property, which means they are subject to any currency fluctuations that may happen from the time that they book, to the time that they pay in the local currency” says Jarred Dowson, directed of Mint Tours .

“This can make a serious dent to your holiday spending money. By booking with a travel agent, you protect yourself from these currency fluctuations as we lock in the currency rate when you book, so there’s no nasty surprises.”

General Manager of MySnow Holidays , Daniel Walker, says “I have seen customers being changed 3-4% difference in exchange rates plus 2% international credit card fees, plus the hotels own credit card fees. For me, paying an additional 6-8% on my holiday would leave a sour taste in my mouth”.

They’re accredited so you’re protected

Look for the AFTA and IATA accreditation and ensure the agency you work with adhere to the ATAS Charter and Code of Conduct which means you’re protected. Always.

They have deals the internet doesn’t

Contrary to the popular myth that using a ski specialist will cost you more, few know that ski specialists can actually save you money thanks to their connections.

“It is really easy to book the wrong flight, miss a transfer because you haven’t allowed enough time or arrive at a hotel and realise that you have booked the wrong dates” says Luke Pritchard from MySnow Holidays of the challenges of booking yourself.  

“When you book with a ski specialist, they already know the best flights to meet a transfer and how much time to allow at different airports. You get the support of inside information.”

Free advice from those in the snow

“Buying a ski holiday for the family can be the cost of a new car. Would you buy a new car without talking to a car dealer? No way! You use them for free advice and make sure they get you a great deal. If it is not the best deal, you go somewhere else” says Walker.

Snow consultants are trained experts, they have first hand knowledge of destinations and they have the networks and the booking technology to get you into places the internet can’t. 

“Do you want to be stumbling distance of the bars and ski-in-ski-out or schlepping miles in ski boots to your accommodation in the next town” asks Gabbi Mueller, Reservation Supervisor for Skimax Holidays. “Talk to a ski specialist to get a real feel of the village atmosphere because we’ve been there, we have the lay of the land.”

Most snow specialists have relationships with local guides, restaurants even ski pros and athletes. They can get you access you don’t even know about.
