Sophie Ellis-Bextor (born April 10, 1979) is an British pop, disco and dance, singer-songwriter and recording artist, best known for her smash hit single “Murder on the Dancefloor”, hailing from Hounslow, London, UK.

Born the daughter of Blue Peter presenter Janet Ellis and film producer and director Robin Bextor, Sophie’s earliest live performance came with the children's, “W11 Opera”, when she was 13. Ellis-Bextor subsequently made forays into indie music in 1997 by becoming Theaudience’s lead vocalist. Following the release of a debut, self-titled album, which spawned the singles “I Got the Wherewithal”, “If You Can’t Do It When You’re Young; When Can You Do It?”, and the No. 25 charting “I Know Enough (I Don’t Get Enough)”, the band were dropped by Mercury Records and Ellis-Bextor went solo.

Before releasing any original material, in 2000 the singer contributed vocals to the DJ Spiller instrumental track “Groovejet”, which subsequently topped the UK Singles Chart and earned regular rotation in clubs across the UK. A year later Ellis-Bextor issued her debut solo album “Read My Lips”. Rising to No. 2 on the UK Albums Chart, the record produced four Top 20 singles: Cher’s “Take Me Home”, the No. 2 “Murder on the Dancefloor”, “Get Over You / Move This Mountain”, and “Music Gets the Best of Me”. The record turned the singer into a national household name, however she also enjoyed success internationally with the album selling 2 million worldwide.

Following a supporting tour of the UK and Europe, Ellis-Bextor returned in 2003 to release her sophomore full-length “Shoot from the Hip”. Two tracks from the album were released as singles, “Mixed Up World” and “I Won’t Change You”, with the third and fourth being scrapped due to the singer giving birth to her first child. Debuting at No. 7 on the UK Albums Chart, Ellis-Bextor’s third studio album “Trip the Light Fantastic” was issued in May 2007. The disco-pop record, produced by Greg Kurstin, earned rave reviews and featured the likes of Fred Schneider, Richard Barone, Shelly Poole, and Cathy Dennis. In support of the record the singer toured opening for Geoge Michael and Take That, however had to cancel her own headlining tour.

In October 2008 Ellis-Bextor recorded a cover of Dolly Parton’s “Jolene”, which appeared on the soundtrack for the BBC2 sitcom “Beautiful People”. After which the singer contributed vocals to French DJ Junior Caldera’s track “Can’t Fight This Feeling” that later peaked in the French Top 20, and appeared on the Freemasons single “Heartbreak (Make Me a Dancer)”. In June 2011 Eliis-Bextor issued her fourth full-length “Make a Scene”, which was marked by more dance elements and influences than previous albums. Featuring collaborations with Calvin Harris, Richard X, Armin van Buuren, and Metronomy, the album was led by the single “Bittersweet”, and peaked at No. 33 on the UK Albums Chart.

Upon the announcement of a fifth studio album in May 2011, Ellis-Bextor began touring again, playing dates in Australia and Jakarta. Led by the single “Young Blood”, the album “Wanderlust” was released in January 2014, peaking at No. 4 on the UK Albums Chart. Representing her most ambitious album to date, “Wanderlust” incorporated folk, baroque and chamber pop elements and spawned the subsequent singles “Runaway Daydreamer” and “Love Is a Camera”.

Live reviews

Oozing confidence – presumably bolstered since placing fourth on Strictly Come Dancing and the reception to well-received recent LP, Wanderlust - Sophie Ellis-Bextor is the success story you never saw coming. After wowing the charts and general public with pop gems in the early/mid 2000s, she faded into a befuddling obscurity; she never stopped dropping sounds, but the spotlight had dimmed. However, now in 2014, she's riding a resurgence, with mammoth sets at festivals across Europe (Glastonbury and T In The Park to name but a few).

Obviously, there are her vintage hits like the ubiquitous neo-disco belter “Murder On The Dancefloor”, and her guest spot with Spiller on “Groovejet (If This Ain't Love)”, but the London-born singer-songwriter also covers Moloko's “Sing It Back”, Cher's “Take Me Home”, Modjo's “Lady (Hear Me Tonight)” and Freemasons' “Heartbreak (Make Me A Dancer)” pretty regularly during live shows. That's not to say her sets are a medley of ageing pop numbers; she whips cuts from her back catalogue out for the most part, and her folk/ballad-centric recent material goes down especially well. Performing with live strings, blazing lights, and live funk strummers, she proves that she's still able to impress and deliver a ridiculously entertaining show.

Imagine how surprised and overjoyed I was to hear that Sophie Ellis Bextor was headed back to Norwich after 7 years, then imagine how much more delighted I was to realise that she was headed to such an intimate venue as the Waterfront! My wife kindly got us tickets and I have to say it is one of the best presents she has ever got me.

Live strings on stage, great costumes, glitter, this gig had the lot. Obviously being a gig to promote her new album Wanderlust the first half of the gig was devoted to showcasing her new material, but it was after the interval that it really came to life with Sophie and her band playing a medley of disco classics (both her own and other club classics). The energy levels were through the roof and the sweat was pouring from the audience as well as the performers. The stage show finished with my favourite track Murder on the Dance Floor, but still there was more with a special fully acoustic number which is no mean feat in a club of excitable fans! Sophie further cemented her status as my number 3 girl (behind my wife and daughter) by staying to sign autographs after and taking the time to speak to fans individually and posing for photos. Top, top night!

Personally I think it is refreshing for an artist who achieved commercial success during the beginning of their career to further adapt and change their sound in order to react to the musical marketplace. So many performers nowadays rest on the laurels of the hits they achieved decades ago and feel no need to create anything you could consider new. This is not true of London singer/songwriter Sophie Ellis-Bextor.

The electro artist turned baroque pop singer is a shining example of the ability to develop as a performer. Her live show is now a showcase of new whimsical tracks lifted from latest album 'Wanderlust' along with the old classic singles from the disco revival of the early 00s. She guides the audience through the narratives of 'Love is A Camera' and '13 Little Dolls' before a quick costume change and a second act of sorts begins. This is all about the dance as the lights dim and she launches into 'Take Me Home' 'Sing It Back' and of course 'Murder on the Dancefloor'. Sophie is a perfectly versatile performer with a whole career still ahead of her.

A fantastic Show.

Sophie Ellis Bextor was amazing. With a full Orchestra behind all her, her songs were transformed into magical drama. With Songs like 'Take me home' and 'Murder on the dance floor' I found myself disco dancing and squealing with delight.

The whole auditorium was rocking. Sophie had us all in the palm of her hand. One of the best evening of my year!

if you can get a ticket....GO!

I have seen sophie many times, but this tour gives you a different perspective on her songs. A beautiful sounding orchestra and band. Sophie was very charismatic and humourous as usual, and her voice is outstanding. Will miss you at Glastonbury this year SEB.

Trending on Billboard

The scene, in which the film’s lead Barry Keoghan dances nude to the song, kicked off a dance trend on TikTok – and saw the song power into charts around the world.

Last month, “Murder” cracked the Billboard Hot 100 for the first time , at No. 98, then lifted to No. 51, its new peak.

In her homeland, “Murder” recently returned to its all-time peak position of No. 2 on the Official U.K. Singles Chart, and is one of her six top 10 hits there. She also boasts a No. 1 hit as the uncredited singer on Spiller’s 2000’s release “Groovejet (If This Ain’t Love)”. The track has also reentered the top 10 on Australia’s ARIA Chart.

“It actually feels really magical, and if I’m honest, I don’t think I’ve completely processed it really,” Ellis-Bextor told the BBC following the revival for “Murder”. “It’s a song I’ve been singing for over 20 years. I still love singing it. I love the way people react when I do it live. But for new people to be discovering it, for it to be making new memories with people, is kind of beautiful.”

Ahead of her North America jaunt, Ellis-Bextor has strutted her stuff on national TV, performing the song on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and for the BBC’s coverage of the BAFTAs.

Michelle Ogundehin is best known as the head judge of Interior Designs Masterclass on BBC 1. It’s a programme I am utterly addicted to, and I was therefore delighted to have been asked to join as a guest judge for semi finals week, this week (TX 23/4/24). I have been a fan of Michelle’s expert eye when it comes to interiors for a long time, having devoured every issue of Elle Decoration published during her time as editor in chief from 2004-2017. I love her approach to homes and how they make you feel, always taking into account the link between our environment and how it affects our mental health.

Off-screen, Michelle is a devoted single mum to her 10 year old son. She became a mum later in life, after years of trying, and her journey included IVF and four miscarriages. She says her son is the best thing that has ever happened to her.

We talked about her worries about becoming a mum due to her own mother not being maternal or loving to her.

She told me how she has recently been ‘album-ing’ her life and also that she believes that what surrounds us at home affects us.

I finally tested her boundaries when I mischievously suggested she should let her little boy draw on his bedroom walls, just as my mum let me!

Heather James is best known to us all as the mum of Deborah James, the beautiful bowelbabe, who I interviewed for Spinning Plates 3 years ago. That was the year before her premature death at the age of 40, from bowel cancer.

Heather explained how she is grieving but working. Not only working in her day job as a gymnastics teacher, but also doing everything that Deborah would have continued with - including campaigning to highlight April as Bowel Cancer Awareness month.

Deborah spent the last weeks of her life at her mum and dad’s house in the summer of 2022 surrounded by her family. Heather and her husband Alistair found themselves looking after Deborah and, to everyone’s surprise, hosting Prince William when he came to their garden to make Deborah a Dame. Heather talked about caring for Deborah when she came home to die, but said Deborah’s zest for life - and campaigning - meant that far from going quiet, it was a busy time of fun, outings, a book, a rose and of course, a Damehood.

It struck me that Heather is everything you would hope to be, as a mum in such a dreadful circumstance.

She is planning to life life to the full, as Deborah wanted her to. And we spoke, just before her son’s wedding where the entire family were planning to party and celebrate just as Deborah would have done if she were still here. And speaking as someone who witnessed her 40th birthday party in full swing, boy, did Deborah know how to party!

New podcast series klaxon!! Spinning Plates is back, and we kick off the the new series with a friend of mine :-) Natasha Bedingfield is a New Zealand-UK singer and songwriter who started out in the business at a similar time to me.  Another shared link is that we are both currently on a new adventure with songs we brought out originally in our early 20s! How’s that for a coincidence?  We’ve each been on an unexpected and exciting journey with our old songs… both because of recent films.  The film ‘Anyone but You’ featured Natasha’s 'Unwritten’ which originally charted nearly 20 years ago.

Natasha talked about her place in her own family’s politics, where her brother Daniel was the first to get into the music industry. Natasha had to fight to pursue her music career; in her family’s eyes, that 'place’ had already been taken by her sibling! (Sidenote: Daniel’s debut single 'Gotta Get Thru This’ kept Murder off the top spot in the charts 22 years ago - not that I’m holding a grudge or anything, Daniel!)

Natasha has a little boy who is now 6.  When he was 2, he was taken seriously ill with a spontaneous brain abscess He had to have two surgeries and was in hospital for 5 weeks.  Thankfully there was a cure and he is fully recovered, but the time he was in hospital was obviously an extremely difficult period for Natasha and her husband. Natasha remembers having to perform a gig while her son was still in hospital. She shared how terribly difficult that was, and how in a room full of small talk she would suddenly blurt out 'My son’s in hospital!’.

On a lighter note Natasha and I talked about how having a baby changed our singing range - for the better!  And we agreed that we are both really enjoying the new ride with our old songs from the early 2000s. It was such a pleasure to hang out with Natasha - she’s such a positive person - and here’s to another series of Spinning Plates!

Take That’s tour comes in support of their 2023 album ‘This Life’. Their first album in six years, it charted at No. 1 in the UK and was the biggest selling album from a UK artist last year. Ellis-Bextor’s own ‘Murder On The Dancefloor’ has gone viral and re-entered charts around the world following its use in the finale of Emerald Fennell-directed film Saltburn – where it soundtracked Keoghan dancing nude through the titular mansion.

The song is currently sitting at number 7 on the ARIA singles chart (it peaked at number 3 in 2002) and was covered earlier this month by the Sydney indie band Royel Otis on triple j’s Like A Version .

NEWS... BUT NOT AS YOU KNOW IT

Sophie Ellis-Bextor faces competition from another iconic noughties song storming the charts

Natasha Bedingfield

Sophie Ellis-Bextor might have stormed back up the charts recently , but she’s not the only 2000s pop superstar making a fresh bid for number one.

The London singer’s hit Murder on the Dancefloor reached number two way back in 2001, and raced back up to the same heights in January 2024 after its inclusion on the Saltburn soundtrack.

But, unbelievably, she’s not the only 00s pop sensation being given another go at the charts in the first weeks of the new year, as Natasha Bedingfield has found out this week .

Her song Unwritten, which first reached the UK top 10 in 2004, has re-entered the top 20 on the Official Singles Chart after its prominent use in Anyone But You, the rom-com starring Sydney Sweeney.

Almost two decades on from its original release, the song has spread far and wide on TikTok, giving Natasha Bedingfield her first big hit in the UK since Love Like This – a collaboration with Sean Kingston that reached number 20.

It’s news that has pleased the I Bruise Easily singer immensely: ‘I’ve had songs in movies before but this time I really love the way it’s been used in such a special way that it makes you feel joyful.’

Sophie ELLIS-BEXTER

Clips posted onto the video-sharing app have shown people leaving movie theatres while singing the song, with millions of views also being racked up by users posting dance routines to the 20-year-old song.

Natasha continued: ‘People are actually singing it as they leave the theatre! Over the years Unwritten has somehow become an anthem to sing at the top of your lungs. This makes me the happiest girl in the world.’

If Unwritten were to get all the way to the top of the chart in the next few weeks, it wouldn’t be the first time Natasha has landed a UK number one.

These Words, released as her second single overall, managed two weeks at number one in 2004 when the likes of Busted, The Streets, and Avril Lavigne were at the height of their fame.

Anyone But You, Natasha Bedingfield

Ironically, it was Natasha’s brother Daniel Bedingfield who kept Murder on the Dancefloor off number one during its original run in 2001, with his song Gotta Get Thru This topping the charts at the time.

Speaking about the resurgence of Murder of the Dancefloor , Sophie told Metro.co.uk : ‘There has been a lot of crazy stuff. The way the world is, we get so much every day, every day there’s like a new development.

‘But I did slightly freak out when Oprah Winfrey used Murder [in a new video]. I’m not going to lie. I was like, “Oh my God. Oprah Winfrey! Is using Murder on the Dancefloor!

‘I think [my son] finds it slightly baffling,’ she admitted. ‘Not like, horrified or anything, but he’s definitely a little bit perplexed – like, “Why is mum doing things in what is normally just my world?’”

‘But I reassured him it’s going to pass – it’ll be a safe space again soon.’

As for Natasha, it’s not the first time one of her hits has been given a new lease of life after being included in a popular movie, with Pocketful of Sunshine eventually being certified Silver in the UK after its inclusion on the soundtrack to Easy A.

If Natasha is to claim her second number one in UK chart history, she will have to go some to overhaul Noah Kahan’s Stick Season, currently in its third week at number one, and Yes, And?, the brand new single from Ariana Grande .
