Who Is Tom Cruise?

Thomas Cruise Mapother IV, better known as Tom Cruise, was born on July 3, 1962, in Syracuse, New York, to Mary and Thomas Mapother. Cruise's mother was an amateur actress and schoolteacher, and his father was an electrical engineer. His family moved around a great deal when Cruise was a child to accommodate his father's career.

Cruise's parents divorced when he was 11, and the children moved with their mother to Louisville, Kentucky, and then to Glen Ridge, New Jersey, after she remarried. Like his mother and three sisters, Cruise suffered from dyslexia, which made academic success difficult for him. He excelled in athletics, however, and considered pursuing a career in professional wrestling until a knee injury sidelined him during high school.

At age 14, Cruise enrolled in a Franciscan seminary with thoughts of becoming a priest, but he left after a year. When he was 16, a teacher encouraged him to participate in the school's production of the musical Guys and Dolls . After Cruise won the lead of Nathan Detroit, he found himself surprisingly at home on the stage, and a career was born.

'Taps,' 'The Outsiders'

Cruise set a 10-year deadline for himself in which to build an acting career. He left school and moved to New York City, struggling through audition after audition before landing an appearance in 1981's Endless Love , starring Brooke Shields. Around this same time, he snagged a small role in the military school drama Taps (1981), co-starring Sean Penn .

His role in Taps was upgraded after director Harold Becker saw Cruise's potential, and his performance caught the attention of a number of critics and filmmakers. In 1983, Cruise appeared in Francis Ford Coppola 's The Outsiders , which also starred Emilio Estevez , Matt Dillon and Rob Lowe —all prominent members of a group of young actors the entertainment press dubbed the "Brat Pack." The film was not well received, but it allowed Cruise to work with an acclaimed director on a high-profile project.

'Risky Business'

His next film, Risky Business (1983), grossed $65 million. It also made Cruise a highly recognizable actor — thanks in no small part to a memorable scene of the young star dancing in his underwear.

In 1986, after a two-year hiatus, the budding actor released the big-budget fantasy film Legend , which did poorly at the box office. That same year, however, Cruise's A-list status was confirmed with the release of Top Gun , which co-starred Kelly McGillis, Anthony Edwards and Meg Ryan . The testosterone-fueled action-romance, set against the backdrop of an elite naval flight school, became the highest-grossing film of 1986.

'The Color of Money,' 'Rain Man' and 'Born on the Fourth of July'

Cruise followed the tremendous success of Top Gun with a string of both critically acclaimed and commercially successful films. He first starred in The Color of Money (1986) with co-star Paul Newman , and then went on to work with Dustin Hoffman on Rain Man (1988). Cruise's next role, as Vietnam veteran Ron Kovic in the biopic Born on the Fourth of July (1989), earned him an Academy Award nomination and a Golden Globe for Best Actor.

'A Few Good Men,' 'The Firm' and 'Interview with a Vampire'

In 1992, Cruise proved once more that he could hold his own opposite a screen legend when he co-starred with Jack Nicholson in the military courtroom drama A Few Good Men . The film grossed more than $15 million its first weekend and earned Cruise a Golden Globe nomination. He continued to demonstrate his success as a leading man with The Firm (1993) and Interview with a Vampire (1994), which co-starred Brad Pitt.

'Mission: Impossible,' 'Jerry McGuire'

Next, Cruise hit the big screen with two huge hits—the $64 million blockbuster Mission: Impossible (1996), which the star also produced, and the highly acclaimed Jerry McGuire (1996), directed by Cameron Crowe. For the latter, Cruise earned a second Academy Award nomination and Golden Globe for Best Actor.

'Eyes Wide Shut,' 'Magnolia'

Cruise and then-wife Kidman spent much of 1997 and 1998 in England shooting Eyes Wide Shut , an erotic thriller that would be director Stanley Kubrick 's final film. The movie came out in the summer of 1999 to mixed reviews, but that year Cruise enjoyed greater success with the release of Magnolia . His performance as a self-confident sex guru in the ensemble film earned him another Golden Globe Award and an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

'Vanilla Sky,' 'The Last Samurai'

Cruise then starred in the long-awaited smash hit Mission: Impossible 2 in 2000, alongside Anthony Hopkins , Thandie Newton and Ving Rhames. In 2002, he starred in Vanilla Sky , his second collaboration with Crowe, as well as Steven Spielberg 's Minority Report . The following year, Cruise traveled to Australia to shoot the $100 million war epic The Last Samurai, which earned him another Golden Globe nomination.

'War of the Worlds'

Cruise proved he remained a top draw by starring in the Spielberg-directed remake of the science-fiction classic War of the Worlds (2005), which grossed more than $230 million at the box office.

His next effort, Mission: Impossible 3 (2006), also scored well with audiences. However, Cruise was faced with a professional setback in August when Paramount Pictures ended its 14-year relationship with the actor. The company's chairman cited Cruise's erratic behavior and controversial views as the reason for the split, though industry experts noted that Paramount more likely ended the partnership over Cruise's high earnings from the Mission: Impossible franchise.

Cruise quickly rebounded and on November 2, 2006, he announced his new partnership with film executive Paula Wagner and the United Artists film studio. Their first production as a team, the political drama Lions for Lambs (2007), proved a commercial disappointment despite a strong cast that included Meryl Streep and Robert Redford .

'Tropic Thunder'

Taking a break from weighty material, Cruise delighted audiences with his performance in the comedy Tropic Thunder (2008). Despite his relatively small role in a movie that featured Robert Downey Jr. and Ben Stiller , Cruise stood out by obscuring his trademark good looks to play a balding, obese movie studio executive.

'Valkyrie,' 'Rock of Ages'

In December 2008, Cruise released his second project through United Artists. The film, Valkyrie , was a World War II drama about a plot to assassinate German leader Adolf Hitler . Cruise starred as a German army officer who became involved in the conspiracy.

Cruise returned to one of his most popular franchises in 2011 with Mission: Impossible—Ghost Protocol . Breaking into new territory, he then starred in the 2012 musical Rock of Ages . Although Cruise received some positive reviews for his performance as a rock star, the movie failed to attract much of an audience.

'Jack Reacher,' 'Edge of Tomorrow'

Returning to his mainstream action roots, Cruise starred in the 2012 crime drama Jack Reacher , based on a book by Lee Child. He then headlined a pair of science-fiction adventures, Oblivion (2013) and Edge of Tomorrow (2014). Showing no signs of slowing down, the veteran actor in 2015 delivered his usual high-energy performance for the fifth installment of his blockbuster franchise, Mission: Impossible—Rogue Nation .

Latest Movies and Familiar Franchises

In 2016, Cruise reprised the role of Jack Reacher for Never Go Back . He then headlined a reboot of The Mummy (2017), which performed respectably at the box office but was savaged by critics, before earning better reviews later that year for the crime thriller American Made .

2018 brought a return to familiar territory for Cruise, who starred in Mission Impossible —Fallout that summer. Prior to its release, he tweeted a photo to mark day 1 of production on the long-awaited sequel Top Gun: Maverick , scheduled for a June 2020 release.

Scientology and Personal Life

Cruise married actress Mimi Rogers in 1987. It was through Rogers that the actor became a student of Scientology, the religion founded by writer L. Ron Hubbard. Cruise credited the church with curing his dyslexia, and he soon became one of its leading proponents. However, while his spiritual life flourished, his marriage to Rogers ended in 1990. That same year, Cruise made the racecar drama Days of Thunder alongside Kidman. Though the movie was unpopular among critics and fans alike, the two lead actors had real chemistry. On Christmas Eve 1990, after a brief courtship, Cruise and Kidman married in Telluride, Colorado.

Divorce from Kidman

For much of the 1990s, Cruise and Kidman found themselves fiercely defending the happiness and legitimacy of their marriage. They filed two different lawsuits against tabloid publications for stories they considered libelous. In each case, the couple received a published retraction and apology, along with a large monetary settlement which they donated to charity. The couple has two children, Isabella and Connor.

On February 5, 2001, Cruise and Kidman announced their separation after 11 years of marriage. The couple cited the difficulties involved with two acting careers and the amount of time spent apart while working. Following the divorce, Cruise briefly dated his Vanilla Sky co-star Penelope Cruz , followed by a much-publicized relationship with actress Katie Holmes. A month after his ties to Holmes became public, Cruise professed his love for the actress in a now-famous appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show, during which he jumped on Winfrey's sofa, shouting "Yes!"

Marriage to Katie Holmes

In June 2005, after a two-month courtship, Cruise proposed to Holmes in a restaurant at the top of the Eiffel tower. In October, they announced that they were expecting their first child together. The hasty proposal and surprise pregnancy quickly became tabloid gossip. But Cruise made even bigger headlines that year as an outspoken advocate for Scientology. He openly criticized former co-star Brooke Shields for using anti-depressants during her recovery from postpartum depression. He also denounced psychiatry and modern medicine, claiming Scientology held the key to true healing. Cruise's statements led to a heated argument with news anchor Matt Lauer on The Today Show in June 2005, for which Cruise later apologized.

In 2006, Cruise and Holmes welcomed daughter Suri into the world. That year, they were married in an Italian castle, with celebrities Will Smith , Jada Pinkett Smith , Jennifer Lopez and Victoria and David Beckham among those in attendance. However, the storybook romance wouldn't last, and in June 2012, the couple announced their separation.

The Transformation Of Tom Cruise From 21 To 58 Years Old

There's a lot that can be said about Tom Cruise . The star is a Golden Globe-winning actor, producer, and dad of three . Cruise is known in Hollywood as one of the highest-paid stars, and he's held that status for decades.

Cruise is the only son of four children, who was raised by his mom, Mary Lee (née Pfeiffer), a special education teacher, and dad, Thomas Cruise Mapother III, an electrical engineer. His parents were both from Louisville, Kentucky, where he lived for 11 years, but Cruise moved to Glen Ridge, New Jersey, with his mother following his parents' divorce in 1973, per IMDb .

As a kid, Cruise struggled to fit in, and in school, he spent his years trying to hide his dyslexia, which he was diagnosed with at age 7. The actor once described his younger self as "functionally illiterate" (via Dyslexiahelp.umich.edu ), but fortunately, he excelled in sports. In fact, he once considered pursuing a career in professional wrestling, but he suffered a knee injury during high school that , per Biography .

After a teacher encouraged Cruise to join the school's production of the musical "Guys and Dolls," he fell in love with acting, and well, the rest is history. Since then, Cruise has captivated audiences around the globe, and his transformation is nothing short of amazing.

Tom Cruise sets off to New York City with dreams of becoming a star

Tom Cruise had big plans to become a Hollywood star, and he set off to New York City with his dreams at the forefront. Though he struggled to get his career off the ground in the beginning, he persevered and kept auditioning before landing his debut gig in 1981's "Endless Love," starring icon Brooke Shields. That same year, he appeared alongside Sean Penn in "Taps."

By 1983, Cruise was establishing himself as an up-and-coming heavyweight, snagging roles in 1983's "Losin' It," "Risky Business," and "The Outsiders." He portrayed the character of Steve Randle, a member of the group of young actors dubbed the "Brat Pack," with Emilio Estevez, Matt Dillon, and Rob Lowe. Though "The Outsiders" didn't receive the praise it was hoping, the gig led to roles in 1985's "Legend," and ultimately, his iconic starring appearance in 1986's " Top Gun ."

"Top Gun," which became the highest-grossing film of that year (via Chicago Tribune ), confirmed Cruise's status as an A-list actor and catapulted the star into a life of fame and superstardom. According to Box Office Mojo , the action-romance flick, which follows the story of Cruise's character, Lt. Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, as he joins an elite naval flight school, has earned more than $176 million in the box office to this day.

Tom Cruise becomes one of Hollywood's highest-paid actors by the 1990s

With "Top Gun" on his résumé, Tom Cruise established himself as a Hollywood hotshot, and by that time, he was making the big bucks. In the late 1990s, Cruise snagged the title of one of showbiz's highest-paid actors in the world, according to Celebrity Net Worth .

The handsome heartthrob had already earned $9 million for 1990's "Days of Thunder" and another $15 million for his work on "Interview With the Vampire" in 1994, but his bank account skyrocketed when he landed the starring role in "Mission Impossible" in 1996. Entertainment Weekly reported he "pocketed $70 million" for the hit action film, and he also "negotiated a chunk of 'Mission's' overall $465 million gross."

Cruise's monetary gain is so impressive that a report from Casumo claims he pockets more than $7,000 per word. "When taking into account everything he's been in for almost 40 years, supposedly it's as much as $7,091 per word," CinemaBlend reported in April 2020.

But, while Cruise has more money than one could ever imagine, the producer knows he has earned every dollar in his $600 million fortune. "I get paid because I'm worth it and they should pay me that much. But I've never done work for money, ever," he shared with Vanity Fair in 2000 (via The Uncool ). "It is my life, it is what I do, it is what I love to do."

Tom Cruise falls in love with Nicole Kidman and starts a family

As he was cementing his place in the entertainment industry, Tom Cruise was also experiencing changes in his love life. The star walked down the aisle with his first wife, Mimi Rogers , in 1987, and they were together for three years. After they split in 1990, though, Cruise was not single for long, as he developed a deep bond with Nicole Kidman when they met on the set of "Days of Thunder."

Cruise wasn't the only one who was instantly smitten. "He swept me off my feet," Kidman recalled to Vanity Fair in December 2002. "I fell madly, passionately in love." Later that year, Cruise and Kidman said "I do," and by 1995, they were the parents of their adopted kids, daughter Isabella Jane Cruise and son Connor Cruise .

Over the next few years, Cruise and Kidman raised their kids while juggling their busy careers as Hollywood stars. In 1997 and 1998, they worked together on "Eyes Wide Shut," an erotic thriller directed by legend Stanley Kubrick. The actor landed other gigs, including 1999's "Magnolia" — which earned him a Golden Globe and Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor — followed by "Mission: Impossible II" in 2000 (via IMDb ).

Just one year later, though, Cruise experienced turmoil in his personal life as he and Kidman split in 2001. Per Entertainment Weekly , the "Vanilla Sky" lead filed for divorce , citing "irreconcilable differences" as the reason.

Tom Cruise marries wife No. 3 Katie Holmes

Following his split from Nicole Kidman, Tom Cruise fixated his focus on his acting career, and throughout the early 2000s, he balanced several roles in "Minority Report," "Austin Powers in Goldmember," and "Collateral." By April 2005, Cruise's personal life started making headlines once again when he publicly debuted his relationship with Katie Holmes .

While many speculated their romance was a publicity stunt, as Cruise was starring in "War of the Worlds" while Holmes was cast as the lead in "Batman Begins," they proved how serious they were when they got engaged less than two months later in June, per The Hollywood Reporter . Before they got the chance to walk down the aisle, though, Cruise expanded his family when Holmes gave birth to their daughter, Suri Cruise , in April 2006.

The duo wed seven months later in November, marking Cruise's third trip down the aisle. Marrying the Hollywood hunk was an unbelievable moment for Holmes, who told Seventeen magazine she "used to think I was going to marry Tom Cruise" as a little girl (via The Hollywood Reporter). However, their romance eventually came to end in June 2012 when Holmes filed for divorce. At the time, Cruise's attorney called their split "a private matter," adding the actor's No. 1 priority was their "daughter's best interests" (via People ).

Tom Cruise focuses on his career, Scientology, and love

Following his a string of unsuccessful marriages, Tom Cruise became much more guarded in terms of his personal life. By 2016, Cruise sold both his L.A. mansions and purchased a penthouse in Clearwater, Florida, to focus on his work as a Scientologist. According to People , the home happens to be just one block away from the Church of Scientology's international headquarters.

Cruise has been a committed member of the controversial church since 1990, per Insider , and his involvement has been debated for years, especially since a source told Us Weekly in July 2019 that he's "not allowed" to see Suri. Regardless of the claims, plus the fact that Cruise has not been seen in public with Suri since 2013 , the Church fought back, telling Us, "Everything about your inquiry misrepresents the Church of Scientology."

These days, Cruise is also heavily involved in Hollywood, as he's set to star in several upcoming films . Most impressively, he's cast in an untitled project that will be filmed in space, per The Space Shuttle Almanac (via The Independent ).

Cruise isn't just busy in his professional life, though. The actor is reportedly dating actress Hayley Atwell . The two met on the set of "Mission: Impossible 7" and "hit it off from day one," The Sun reported in December 2020. "They've become fairly inseparable. They get on brilliantly, and both seem very happy." It looks like Cruise's long and admirable journey has certainly paid off.

Tom Cruise is 60 and kicking Father Time's butt. Why his birthday is a win for 'Top Gun' fans.

tom cruise old

Happy birthday,  Tom Cruise.  The big 6-0 was July 3. I can't believe we made it.

Yes, Tom Cruise, "we" made it. There have been many of us going along for this ride since you made the maverick decision to bring a second chapter of "Top Gun" to the screen 36 years after the 1986 original.

Sequels of beloved movies can be treacherous. We all want to recapture that thrill of the original, and, if you really think about it, recapture that moment in our lives. But time and again, it's just not possible to catch that same lightning in the sequel bottle.

Even scarier, of course, was the 36 years later part. For those of us who were very alive in 1986, this was a visceral reminder that we are all dangerously close to four decades older.

'Let's light the fires': Tom Cruise arrives by helicopter for world premiere of 'Top Gun: Maverick'

"Top Gun: Maverick" was personal. Tom Cruise needed to prevail not just for the legacy of "Top Gun" or Goose or A-list movie star viability. But for us, for me. "Maverick" had to prove that 36 years ain't no big deal, it's a number, and whatever else we tell ourselves about getting old(er). And Cruise was leading the charge.

Sure enough, that first "Maverick" trailer dropped and Cruise's Pete "Maverick" Mitchell looked like he rode that Kawasaki Ninja straight out of the Reagan administration, with the wind running through his hair and big teeth gleaming.

I saw the hair up close. I was on the red carpet in June for the film's premiere aboard the USS Midway Aircraft Carrier in San Diego. The only thing that out-staged Cruise's showboat helicopter entrance was that magnificent hair – entirely brown and bouncy. It was untamed enough to look like a victorious high school quarterback who pulled up post-shower to the homecoming dance.

To my existential relief, "Maverick" blasted through its "Danger Zone" takeoff and stuck the landing. It is an entirely worthy "Top Gun" follow, maybe even a superior film to the original . And Cruise represented. He whipped off the shirt and played dogfight football with his decades-younger co-stars. Cruise obviously didn't have the washboard abs of his  "Top Gun" volleyball game . But there were abs. And dang, he looked good, especially turbo-sprinting down the beach at the end. In blue jeans. Bravo.

Secrets to 'Top Gun: Maverick's epic football scene: Spray tans, protein bars and panic workouts

I asked Cruise how he prepared for that scene, and he shrugged it off, "I just did it," he said with his studied nonchalance. Nice. I generally reserve that line to explain how I ate all the doughnuts.

Onscreen, Maverick has lived the life none of us can live in those 36 years. Not just ignoring but thumbing his nose at his bosses , joyriding supersonic jets, buzzing the bleeping tower on Jon Hamm's Vice Admiral Beau "Cyclone" Simpson. Yet Cyclone still gives that "I respect you" nod at the end, before Maverick goes off to sunset smooch with Jennifer Connelly. You go, Maverick! He doesn't care about car payments, mortgages or inflation. He just flies.

Ed Harris stood up to 'Maverick':  He held steady as jet 'blew the roof off guard station'

Here on Earth, I grimace comedically every time I stand up following any exercise and I'm prone to shouts of agony when my shoulder just locks. I turned the big 55 in April, and happened to be in a Ross Dress for Less, which is hard enough to admit. Turns out Ross has a very liberal senior discount for their Every Tuesday Club, which to my horror, I was suddenly eligible for. Getting 10% off ceramic planters (total savings: $2) should not induce tears. But, gulp. It was my first senior discount.

I calmed myself by harnessing my inner Maverick. I'm sure Tom Cruise has figured out how to slow down, maybe even stop time. He's already back at work to show me feats of inconceivable movie heroics in "Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning" Part I (July 14, 2023) and 2 (June 28, 2024).

So I shout to you Tom Cruise: To 60 and beyond! Ride on forever, with the wind whipping through your hair.

Tom Cruise (born Thomas Cruise Mapother IV; July 3, 1962) is an American actor and producer. One of the world's highest-paid actors, he has received various accolades, including an Honorary Palme d'Or and three Golden Globe Awards, in addition to nominations for three Academy Awards. His films have grossed over $4 billion in North America and over $11.1 billion worldwide, making him one of the highest-grossing box office stars of all time.

He began acting in the early 1980s and made his breakthrough with leading roles in the comedy film Risky Business (1983) and action film Top Gun (1986). Critical acclaim came with his roles in the dramas The Color of Money (1986), Rain Man (1988), and Born on the Fourth of July (1989). For his portrayal of Ron Kovic in the latter, he won a Golden Globe Award and received a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actor.

As a leading Hollywood star in the 1990s, he starred in several commercially successful films, including the drama A Few Good Men (1992), the thriller The Firm (1993), the horror film Interview with the Vampire (1994), and the romance Jerry Maguire (1996). For the latter, he won a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor and received his second Academy Award nomination. His performance as a motivational speaker in the drama Magnolia (1999) earned him another Golden Globe Award and a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.

Since then, he has largely starred in science fiction and action films, establishing himself as an action star, often performing his own risky stunts. He has played Ethan Hunt in all six of the Mission: Impossible films from 1996 to 2018. His other notable roles in the genre include Vanilla Sky (2001), Minority Report (2002), The Last Samurai (2003), Collateral (2004), War of the Worlds (2005), Knight and Day (2010), Jack Reacher (2012), Oblivion (2013), Edge of Tomorrow (2014), and Top Gun: Maverick (2022), with Maverick being his highest-grossing film to date.

The Golden Age of the Aging Actor

Tom Cruise in ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ isn’t the exception—he’s the rule. There’s long been anecdotal evidence that top-line actors and actresses are getting older. Now, The Ringer has the data to back it up.

Share All sharing options for: The Golden Age of the Aging Actor

Like its predecessor, Top Gun: Maverick is a movie about sweaty beach sports , awkward sex scenes , and dogfights with enemies of uncertain national origin . More so than the original, though, it’s also about aging. Maverick, a trainee in Top Gun , is now an instructor, regarded as a fossil, an old-timer, the last of his kind. Tethered to the past, he’s told that he’s going to get grounded as the guard changes not just to the next generation of pilots, but to uncrewed drones. He teaches his students that “Time is your greatest enemy,” a lesson hammered home by his old frenemy Iceman’s struggle with cancer. “It’s time to let go,” Iceman informs him. “I don’t know how,” Maverick replies.

All of this seems to make the movie a metaphor for film stardom. Tom Cruise, who first played Maverick when he was 23 and reprises the role in his late 50s, is a household name who hails from an era when there was such a thing, and when people, not IPs, were the biggest box-office attractions; he’s “Hollywood’s Last Real Movie Star,” as a recent New York Times feature dubbed him, or “The Last Action Hero,” as Ringer contributor Noah Gittell did . It may be true that Cruise’s kind of big-screen (or any -screen) star is “headed to extinction,” to borrow a phrase from Maverick’s boss, rear admiral Chester Cain (Ed Harris). But even if, as Cain says, “the end is inevitable,” Hollywood hasn’t let go of aging actors just yet. In fact, it’s clinging ever more tightly to them.

In the past 20 years—and particularly the last 10 to 15—the average age of actors appearing toward the top of the bill in film and TV projects has risen significantly. Whereas the star, or the top two or three stars, of the typical movie or TV series released in the closing decades of the 20th century was typically in their late 30s—several years older than the median age of the United States population at the time—today’s average actor age has reached the mid-40s and is steadily climbing toward 50. Actors who became fixtures on big screens and small in previous decades haven’t given way to new blood as quickly as was once customary. As a result, Hollywood’s leading men and women of today bear a strong resemblance to the leading men and women from the ’80s, ’90s, and 2000s after a trip to the beach from Old —except, of course, for the fact that actors like Cruise (who’ll turn 60 next week) don’t always look their age. The graying of actors—the ones with their natural hair colors, at least—appears to be the product of a confluence of factors that reflect the fracturing of culture in the post-monoculture age, the industry’s gravitation toward franchises and sequels, shifts in audience demographics, efforts to promote more inclusive casting, and a growing range of options for maintaining a more youthful appearance.

Top Gun: Maverick features 50-somethings Cruise, Jennifer Connelly, and Jon Hamm; 62-year-old Val Kilmer; and 71-year-old Ed Harris. The movie also makes space for a smattering of 30-somethings, led by Miles Teller, Glen Powell, and Jay Ellis (who turned 40 after filming finished), but the oldsters are the stars. Audiences have happily turned out to see them: The movie opened big at the box office over Memorial Day weekend, and its appeal has proved resilient in subsequent weeks. The movie has surpassed a cumulative gross of $500 million domestically and $1 billion worldwide, and although COVID concerns kept many older film watchers away from theaters during the peak of the pandemic, 55 percent of people who bought tickets to Top Gun in its opening weekend were over 35.

In this era, the average age of Top Gun ’s top two actors hardly stands out. Consider the duos associated with other recent, high-profile releases such as Coming 2 America (Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall) or Only Murders in the Building (Steve Martin and Martin Short); the aged (and sometimes digitally de-aged) ensembles of The Irishman or the just-concluded Grace and Frankie ; or the leads of Star Trek: Picard (Patrick Stewart) or Hacks (Jean Smart). The Taylor Sheridanverse that’s taking over TV features lead actors who range from their 50s to their late 70s: Kevin Costner, Sam Elliott, Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, Harrison Ford, Helen Mirren, Jeremy Renner. Heck, an increasing percentage of movies have had “Old” in their titles: Not only Old , but also All of the Old Knives , The Old Way , and Old Henry , just since the start of 2021. On TV, there’s the almost too on-the-nose The Old Man , the new FX/Hulu series featuring 72-year-old Jeff Bridges and 76-year-old John Lithgow.

Granted, aged actors gracing the screen is not a new phenomenon, and neither is naming movies and TV shows with the word “Old.” (Old Yeller was only five years old , but the Grumpy —and Grumpier —Old Men were getting up there.) However, our analysis of IMDb data shows that this apparent aging of actors isn’t just anecdotal. The graph below displays the average age (at time of release) of the top-listed actor, top two listed actors, and top three listed actors in movies produced since 1980 that have garnered at least 1,000 IMDb user ratings (a really low bar cleared by 3,000 to 4,000 movies per year worldwide, including streaming releases).

The same pattern appears in all three, as it does if we focus on more exclusive samples of movies with at least 10,000 IMDB user ratings (roughly 200 titles per year) …

As the average age of actors with prominent parts has soared, the fraction of movies in which at least one of the top two listed actors is over 60, and the fraction in which at least one is under 30, have correspondingly increased and declined, respectively:

And while the aging of male action stars—the Cruises, Craigs, Keanus, Neesons, and Stallones—is among the most visible manifestations of the trend, it seems to span multiple genres.

Recent releases have more missing birthdates on IMDb, as do younger actors, but that can’t skew the stats enough to account for these visuals. Essentially, actors who rose to prominence in past decades have yet to retire or be vaudeville hooked out of the frame, and the youngsters and understudies who might have been expected to succeed them haven’t really arrived the way their predecessors did. The chart below, a kind of aging curve for actors, shows how prolific actors born in each of the 20th century’s five 20-year buckets collectively were as they aged. The most recent cohort, which would be in its early 20s to early 40s now, is on a much less productive trajectory than the generations born between 1940 and 1960 or between 1960 and 1980. (For reference, there are more movies made than ever now, across all platforms and even after limiting to 1,000 or more IMDb ratings, though there’s been a decrease in theatrical releases over the past decade, which began prior to the pandemic.)

The top two actors from the top-grossing movie of each year of the 1990s went on to appear in 185 movies from 2000 to 2009, and 129 from 2010 to 2019. The top two actors from the top-grossing movie of the 2000s went on to make only 101 movies from 2010 to 2019. So not only did the ’90s stars nearly double the next-decade output of the 2000s stars, but the ’90s stars were still more active two decades after their box-office heydays than the 2000s stars were one decade later. “There’s just greater longevity, frankly, of the people who are acting,” says Bruce Nash, founder of movie-industry database The Numbers . The most bankable actors, per his site’s current ranking , are Robert Downey Jr. and Sandra Bullock, both 57. But which is driving the trend: movie stars, or the movie business? Not to quash the suspense, but you know the drill: The answer is always “a bit of both.”

Ask industry sources, and you’ll get little pushback on the finding that lead actors, on average, are older than they used to be. (And not just in the sense that everyone who’s still living is older than they once were.) “People in Hollywood talk about this all the time,” says Matthew Belloni, founding partner and entertainment reporter at Puck (and host of Ringer show-business podcast The Town ). Nash adds, “It does certainly feel as though we do have that trend.” Casting director Mike Page confirms, “It definitely does track.” And Joshua Lynn, president of Piedmont Media Research , says, “It’s definitely true, you see the same names now that you did 15-to-20-plus years ago on the list of bankable stars.” The question is why this has happened—and on that topic, you’re liable to hear a range of responses.

One common hypothesis pins the blame for younger actors’ failure to reach the same heights of bankability on the decline of the monoculture. “The fracturization of the culture means it’s much more difficult to launch stars,” says Belloni. “You look at what’s going on with the Top Gun guys right now. In a previous generation, Miles Teller, Glen Powell, maybe Jay Ellis, those guys would all be stars that could be the center of their own movie now. But now, not really.” (Unless, that is, it’s a Marvel movie—but we’ll get to that.) As Page puts it, “It’s harder to establish these megastars now, because so few people are viewing the exact same content.”

In other words, actors of Cruise’s vintage, who came of age as actors and celebrities in a pre-internet age with fewer entertainment options and less siloed media diets, attained a level of cultural penetration that would be far more difficult for any actor to replicate now. Members of that generation who built their public profiles in a more fame-friendly era may be better positioned to cut through the static of competing people and products than those who didn’t debut or break big early enough to establish that foothold. Consequently, the former may be more able—or perceived as more able—to attract an audience on the strength of their reputation, which would make them more in demand. “You’ll keep seeing the same names over and over, because they happened to exist at a time when ‘movie stars’ were a more important thing to our culture than they are now,” Lynn says. Whether you noticed or not, Neeson has pumped out 24 action movies since starring in Taken in 2008, when he was 55. Another ’90s star, Adam Sandler, has made 22 non-animated movies since the start of 2008—including more comedies than he had in his whole career up to that point—most of which were part of lucrative Netflix deals .

Some sources suggest that somewhat paradoxically, the greater ease of access to celebrities today may diminish their movie-star cred. Jeff Bock, senior media analyst for Exhibitor Relations Co. , says, “Part of the mystique of being a larger-than-life movie star resides in the exclusivity of engagement with audiences. … Even though fans have more access [to younger stars], oftentimes it diminishes that unique bond one forms with consumers.” Belloni echoes that sentiment. “We can see Miles Teller all over his wife’s Instagram every day. And we can see him tweeting about the Phillies, and we can see him in all the paparazzi shots and on our TikTok feeds. And there’s nothing special about seeing Miles Teller in a movie anymore. Whereas … there [were] only a couple places to see Arnold Schwarzenegger, or Tom Cruise … or any of these guys that are considered action stars still today.” The social-media-driven “commoditization of actors,” Belloni believes, has “really, really diminished the ability to create new stars.”

Perhaps that’s partly because the current up-and-comers who might be movie-star material are less likely to inspire, or even aspire to inspire, the same sort of fandom as stars in previous eras. “There is a rising generation—more than one, really—of entertainment consumers that isn’t as committed to narrative entertainment as the generations before them,” says film historian and author Mark Harris . “Maybe they’re gamers, or maybe what they really enjoy is TikTok, or maybe it’s something else, but a generation can’t generate stars if it doesn’t really love the medium that creates and accommodates stars.” At the very least, the strain of stardom that newer media spawns may not look like yesterday’s flavor; the modern model may be closer to Kardashian than Cruise.

Even so, some actors still covet Cruise-ian cachet. (Per the Times , Powell told Cruise, “I’m trying to be you.”) They may just lack the avenues to achieve it, thanks to what Nash identifies as a “gap between the regular movies and the big blockbusters,” the latter of which are dwindling in number The remaining few, he adds, “come in, increasingly, the same mold. Really, what you’re seeing are superhero movies, [and] there’s not a lot of opportunity for people to become superhero movie stars.”

That increasing emphasis on franchise-based blockbusters has come at the expense of some of the old pathways to prominence. “There [are fewer] studio movies now than ever before, and the indie movie scene is pretty small and not as significant to Hollywood as it used to be, which allowed exciting new faces/voices into the mix,” Lynn says, adding, “There are just [fewer] opportunities for new people to suddenly emerge and lead a major film and then become stars, leading to more opportunities to lead other films subsequently.” To return to Teller: “In a previous generation, he would have the opportunity to do a mid-budget studio thriller, rom-com, something that would test his allure as a movie star and the ability to open a movie,” Belloni says. “And those movies are just not happening.”

Now, Lynn says, there are at most three routes to traditional movie stardom. You can rise from obscurity to star in a film from a respected studio director who became a big name in the ’80s or ’90s; you can earn critical acclaim from a series of smaller movies and then make the leap to Marvel, Star Wars , or another sci-fi tentpole; or you can cross over from a huge hit on TV, though it’s getting harder to have a Game of Thrones – or Stranger Things –level smash as streaming segmentation intensifies. Oscar Isaac, the Chrises , and Adam Driver, all now in their late 30s or early 40s, needed boosts from major genre movies to reach a new stardom stratosphere. As those movies make up a bigger proportion of the thinner studio release schedule, Lynn says, “You see the same people over and over again in those movies playing the same parts.”

Film data researcher Stephen Follows, who has also observed a 21st-century trend toward older actors, suspects that the thirst for reboots and sequels accounts for some of the aging trend, because recycling material leads to recycling stars. “It’s about films having the same people in them, and people sticking around for longer,” he says. “And therefore, by definition, they’re aging one year a year.” (Cruise, for instance, appears almost exclusively in sequels these days.) F. Andrew Hanssen, an economics professor at Clemson who detected early signs of a widespread aging of actors in a study published a decade ago, notes that whereas during the days of the studio system, studios would spend substantial sums on building up new stars, “The trend of paying large sums of money to relatively unknown actors to appear in a series of films (as Captain America, say)” may have “created an ‘anti-studio’ situation, in which the incentive to develop new actors except in this narrow capacity has become even weaker.”

Of course, the explosion in sequels, prequels, reboots, and remakes—not only in movies, but in other media, giving rise to what researcher Adam Mastroianni has labeled a “ pop oligopoly ”—stems in part from the fretting about breaking through in a crowded culture, which leads studios to default to the same old names. “The name above the poster is a rarity these days, and because the cost to green-light a blockbuster is an enormous risk for studios, these companies often lean on what has worked previously—sequels and big stars,” says Bock. Last month, Top Gun: Maverick producer Jerry Bruckheimer said as much, remarking , “I still get the same list of 10 men the studios want in a movie. You still get Tom, Leonardo [DiCaprio]. Get one of these big names and you’ve got a good shot at getting a movie made.” Asked for other names, he listed Brad Pitt, who at 58 just related that he’s on the “last leg” of his career; pressed for someone who wasn’t famous last century, he allowed that Hemsworth has “broken through.”

Which isn’t to say that things have to work that way. “Bruckheimer is not wrong in that there are a limited number of actors who can ‘carry’ a movie,” Belloni says. “But I think Hollywood is a little bit to blame here for being risk-averse and not trying certain actors in these roles. … A lot of it is fear that there is such a splintered culture.” Follows also attributes part of the aging effect to “the risk-averse nature of the people commissioning” blockbusters, though he notes that the evidence of actor aging even outside of theatrical releases from major studios “does suggest that it is more of a cultural trend than just the conscious or unconscious decision of 20 people.”

What else could be contributing to that cultural trend? For one thing, this situation isn’t the inverse of Wooderson’s line from Dazed and Confused , in which the actors get older while the audience stays the same age. The audience is getting older also, along with the U.S. population, whose median age is up 8.5 years since 1980. Consequently, catering to middle-aged spectators and senior citizens is more rewarding for the makers of movies and TV. “Older audiences are fueling moviegoing right now,” Belloni says. In 2019 , people 60 or older accounted for more tickets sold than any other age group except 25 to 39. And as younger viewers cut the cord and churn through streaming services , cable-connected and deeper-pocketed viewers are making their preferences felt on TV, too.

“You do have to target the older audiences, because they are the ones that are still paying,” Page says, adding, “They’re probably looking more for content and lead characters, lead actors, that are relevant and reflect their lives and experience.” Although Follows has found that the impact of actor age on audience turnout may be overrated, the perception of a link influences studios. “I probably would be more inclined to see Liam Neeson in an action movie, given my age, than Tom Holland,” says Nash, who’s 54. “You see that in romantic comedies as well. It’s not people in their early 20s anymore. It’s people in their 40s, sometimes, and the second chances at romance, and so on, tends to be a little bit more the prevailing force.”

Older characters require older actors—and like Cruise, those actors may seem to defy the ticking clock that Maverick warned about, especially compared to the chain-smoking stars of old (and old-looking) Hollywood. “Actors look young for longer, thanks to advances in exercise and diet (not to mention cosmetic surgery), and can credibly play action heroes or romantic leads at older ages than in the past,” Hanssen says. ( Physique-enhancing drugs may play a part, too.) Plus, there’s always the option of airbrushing. “Between both modern medicine and what they can do with digital makeup and things like that in post, you can have stars that are aging out, but you still pretend that they’re age appropriate,” Belloni says. And an aging audience might have an evolving definition of “appropriate.” Page points to a “societal expansion of what sexy is, what vitality is, and getting to see that there’s not necessarily an expiration date at 50, at 60, at 70.” (Which is the theme of Good Luck to You, Leo Grande , a movie released last week that stars the 63-year-old Emma Thompson and includes a much - discussed nude scene.)

Actors aren’t alone here: By historical standards, today’s top politicians , top touring musicians , top tennis players , and top quarterbacks are ancient too. It’s the era of presidential runs by Joe Biden, Donald Trump, and Bernie Sanders; pricey, sold-out concerts by Paul McCartney, Elton John, and the Rolling Stones; unprecedented title totals by Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic; one-two MVP finishes by Aaron Rodgers and Tom Brady . Just as new racket strings and slower playing surfaces have helped venerable tennis stars stay at a higher level for longer—and, for that matter, as improvements in manufacturing have kept cars on the road for record durations —tuneups to actors’ exteriors have helped them stay on screens and win Oscars at more advanced ages. Jessica Daniels , a Casting Society of America board member and the VP of casting for Walt Disney Television, says, “60 years old now doesn’t look like 60 years old did 20 or 30 years ago, and people are living longer, and so just by virtue of that, I think that we’re all adapting.”

Another factor fueling that change is anti-ageism advocacy by organizations such as the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media. Although in theory the extended tenures of legacy stars could prevent a group of more diverse actors from seizing the spotlight, studies show sweeping improvements in representation, at least in front of the camera. “It feels like the industry is … moving in the right direction as far as diversification in many areas, and I think age is one of those,” Page says. Historically, female actors have faced severe age discrimination , and that problem persists; Bruckheimer, when asked to list female counterparts to his bankable Brads, Toms, and Leos, said, “Women are harder. It’s just not that strong a list yet.” However, the trend toward older actors holds true for both men and women, and the age gap between them has seemingly started to shrink (though Top Gun costar Kelly McGillis attributed her absence from the sequel to her age and appearance).

tom cruise old

“I definitely think, specifically in television, we are breaking a lot more barriers,” Daniel says. “I think that there is so much more room for not only a diversity and inclusivity of experience, but I do think that there’s an audience that does want to see not only beloved actors that we’ve loved for years, but also just wants to see this experience, wants to see these stories being told.” Although the lines on that graph aren’t close to converging, Nash notes that there’s “not necessarily so much of a bias as there might once have been.”

For the foreseeable future, those “average age” lines may continue their ascent. “With YouTube getting more interest among kids than the state of the Academy Awards, and with streaming fracturing the landscape as we speak even further, I honestly don’t see that changing anytime soon,” Lynn says. The question confronting Hollywood seems similar to the question confronting the ATP Tour as Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic finally age out : Who’s next? “Beyond [Timothée] Chalamet, Holland, and Zendaya, name a movie star under 30.” Belloni says. “It’s tough.” Letitia Wright, Florence Pugh, Hailee Steinfeld, and (soon) Sydney Sweeney may make the most of their Marvel exposure, but in the absence of a deep pool of marquee talent, Page says, “Everybody clamors for the short list of the recognizable names.” Al Pacino anointed Chalamet as his pick to play Vincent Hanna in a potential Heat 2 , and Sony sold Uncharted to audiences using Holland’s post-Spider-Man star power, even though his older costar, Mark Wahlberg, was the one whose name helped get the movie made. (Wahlberg, now a fanatically buff 51, embodied the older-actors hegemony when in 2012 he replaced the 15-years-younger Shia LaBeouf as the face of Transformers .) But Holland and the Dune duo can act only so much.

Cary Grant, who retired at 62, supposedly said , “Hollywood is very much like a streetcar. Once a new star is made and comes aboard, an old one is edged out of the rear exit. There’s room for only so many and no more.” But what if the old stars won’t relinquish their status until they’re elderly enough for riders in real life to offer them seats? The star of Top Gun: Maverick has two more Mission Impossible movies on the way, but Chester Cain wasn’t wrong; Cruise can’t act forever, and by the time that second flick comes out, he’ll be pushing 62 himself. “There is not going to be another Tom Cruise,” Belloni says. “That era is over.” But the era of old actors has no end in sight.

The Future of Tom Cruise: Defying Age in Upcoming Projects

Tom Cruise does not walk towards the future; he sprints, jumps, and flies towards it with a ferocity that belies his calendar age.

  • Planned Films and Roles: The horizon is lined with potential box office behemoths, just waiting for his Midas touch.
  • Age and Career Choices: Will he take the mantle of the elder statesman, or continue to race against 20-somethings?
  • Embracing Real Age: Perhaps there’s a day when he’ll look at his reflection and nod to the passage of time, but that day isn’t today.

Eternal Youth in the Spotlight: What Tom Cruise Teaches Us About Age in Modern Society

From the conquest of youth to the casual flipping of the bird to old age, Tom Cruise crafts a narrative of vitality that’s more than skin deep. Here, in the twilight glow of our exploration, we find a man whose greatest role might just be himself.

  • Key Insights on Cruise’s Age and Appearance: He’s a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma, then packed in an action blockbuster.
  • Society’s Perception of Aging: Cruise nudges the needle, slowly turning perceptions from dread to admiration.
  • Sustainability of an Ageless Image: In a race against time, he’s a reminder of the joys of the journey, rather than the destination.

In the tempest of sequels, remakes, and endless red carpets, Tom Cruise stands as a beacon of age defiance—an emblem of youth in a world obsessed with the next young thing. As twisted as a Wikipedia page on Andrew Tate , as bold as Alexis Fawx challenging industry norms, and as daring as a high-risk merchant highriskpay.com in a sea of safe bets, Cruise sails onward. Through the kaleidoscopic lens of our alternative fashion world, we tilt our hat to the man who asks not “how old,” but rather, “how young can you feel?” For in the end, is that not the true measure of time?

Tom Cruise, as eternal as the starlight, as enigmatic as a twisted tale, offers us more than just box office thrills; he invites us to ponder the ticking of our own clocks and consider what it means to live not just by years, but by moments that take our breath away. How old is Tom Cruise ? He’s as old as we believe, and perhaps, as young as we dare to dream.

Eternal Hollywood Maverick: Tom Cruise

Ah, Tom Cruise—the epitome of the age-defying superstar. While he leaps from buildings and sprints into action without breaking a sweat, the rest of us are left scratching our heads. Just how old is this guy?

Cruise-ing Through the Years

Alright, let’s cut to the chase. Born on July 3, 1962, this silver screen juggernaut has been defying Father Time in a way that’d make you wonder if he’s discovered the fountain of youth. Today, he’s flashing that iconic grin and doing his own stunts at an age where some might be eyeing retirement. But Tommy boy? No way! He’s hitting the ground running, literally, without a sign of slowing down. Seems almost as if the more candles on his cake, the more determined he gets!

Professionally Ageless

Now, you’d think with all those years under his belt, you’d find his life story carved into some ancient stone tablet. But don’t you worry, on the digital Shelves Of The Ever-updating Wikipedia ,( Tom Cruise’s saga is as fresh and fascinating as ever. From his early breakout roles to his latest gravity-defying feats—the man’s biography is a true testament to his enduring spirit.

Top-Tier Staying Power

But hang on, it’s not all about being a vampire of youth—this guy’s resilience in Hollywood’s risky business is something. Speaking of risk, navigating the volatile waters of showbiz fans utmost respect, sorta like those brave Souls who venture Into high-risk merchant waters .( Just as they tackle the perils head-on, so does Cruise surpass every expectation, powering through an industry where stars tend to flicker out faster than a bad movie sequel.

The Secret Sauce?

Alright, here’s the million-dollar question: what’s the man’s secret? If there’s a secluded retreat where A-listers sip from an elixir of youth, you’d expect it to be tucked away near some exquisite Joshua tree Hotels ,( wouldn’t you? God knows the desert’s got its fair share of mysteries. But nope, no mystical desert retreats for Mr. Cruise—he’s more of the gym-and-sensible-diet kinda immortal.

So, the next time you catch a Tom Cruise flick and find yourself wondering how this guy’s kept the clock from ticking, remember—it’s Tom freakin’ Cruise. Age is just a number, and he’s living proof that some stars burn too fiercely to even think about dimming down.

Back in ’86 when “Top Gun” first took our breath away, Tom Cruise was a young Maverick at just 24. Seems like just yesterday, right? Time sure does fly!

Does Tom Cruise have a relationship with Suri?

Suri Cruise, Tom’s daughter with Katie Holmes, seems to be more in the picture with her mom these days. Paparazzi rarely catch a glimpse of her with Tom. It’s a touchy subject, for sure.

Well, the scoop is Tom Cruise keeps in contact with his kiddos, even if it’s not always front-page news. Like I said, family stuff can be as tangled as headphone wires in your pocket.

Is Tom Cruise still with Hayley Atwell?

Is Tom Cruise and Hayley Atwell a thing? As the rumor mill churns, these two have been on-again, off-again more times than a light switch. But currently, it seems the romance chapter has closed. On to the next scene!

Does Tom Cruise have any biological children?

Biological children, you ask? Suri Cruise, that cute-as-a-button kid, is his only biological child. The rest of his clan, Isabella and Connor, were adopted during his marriage to Nicole Kidman.

Tom Cruise re-emerges: Actor looks his age after viral photos of his changing appearance

Tom Cruise

Tom Cruise went viral last month after photos emerged of the actor at a baseball game with a different appearance.

This weekend, the 59-year-old actor was spotted at the Duxford Airfield in Cambridge, England, looking more like himself.

The upcoming M: 18 is the follow-up to the 2018 movie Mission: Impossible Fallout and is scheduled for release in 2023.

The actor appeared less bloated in the newer images compared to a month ago when he was subject to rumors about potentially undergoing cosmetic surgery.

Tom Cruise emerged in a navy blue sweater and dark blue jeans with a head full of hair. In addition, the Missions Impossible star appeared less bloated but seemed to have gained a little weight .

Mission Impossible 7 has finished filming

Despite currently filming scenes for Mission Impossible 8, the previous installment is yet to be released.

As with many movies in recent times, Mission Impossible 7 has had several COVID-related delays.

Mission Impossible 7 gaffer Martin Smith revealed that the movie had finished wrapping in September on his Instagram account.

The movie is currently in post-production and is scheduled for release on September 30, 2022.

Tom Cruise talks about filming Mission Impossible

Tom Cruise first starred as Ethan Hunt in the 1996 movie Mission Impossible.

The spy movie, which the actor produced, was a commercial and critical success and was the third highest-grossing film that year.

In a recent interview, he spoke about creating the movie in a clip via GamesRadar .

“I looked at Paramount, and I thought what I wanted to produce was something – I looked at it in many different ways… I wanted something that was going to be very commercial, potentially, but I wanted something that was going to be artistically challenging,” Cruise explains.

In an interview about the film, Tom Cruise explained the movie’s challenges in several countries.

“What is the challenge of this thing going to be? I wanted it to be an international film, and an international cast,” Cruise adds. “Which at that time was different. I wanted to shoot it in England… I remember they said, ‘Can’t you shoot it in LA, or New York?’ And I was like, ‘No, I actually, I want to go to London.'”

In addition, the busy actor is also promoting the upcoming movie Top Gun: Maverick, which is scheduled for release next year.

The Real Reason Tom Cruise Hasn't Aged

Now in his 60s, Tom Cruise is showing no signs of slowing down, and he isn't aging either.

Quick Links

Did tom cruise get plastic surgery, how does tom cruise look so young for his age.

Tom Cruise turned 60 in July 2022, yet he still looks like his 24-year-old self in his hit 1986 film, Top Gun, whose sequel premiered May 2022 . Some say it is all plastic surgery while others believe it is the actor's healthy lifestyle and commitment to doing his own stunts . In March 2021, Men's Health revealed the real reason the actor has stayed in great shape all these years.

Updated on March 6, 2023: Tom Cruise remains one of the most prolific action stars in Hollywood, with the long awaited sequel Top Gun: Maverick raking in close to $1.5 billion box office dollars . The Mission: Impossible actor is preparing to turn 61 this July, yet he still holds a youthful look and opts to do most of his own stunts.

Jacked Gorilla shared an inside look into Cruise's workout routine, which helps keep him in shape as well as feeling young. "Tom Cruise's workout routine consists of many different exercises . Cruise uses three days of weight training and cardio. It's his job to get active and utilize other forms of fitness on the other two days."

Cruise has been accused of getting plastic surgery for several years. In 2016, fans noticed that he looked "inflated" and "puffy" during the BAFTAs for that year. Many assumed that he'd gotten Botox or fillers. Around the same time, Cuba Gooding Jr. — Cruise's co-star in Jerry Maguire — told Watch What Happens Live! that the actor "absolutely" had work done on his face. "I don't know what he's had done, but I remember I surprised him at his house one day," Gooding Jr. shared. "And he had all of these dots all over his face and I was like, 'You all right?' and he goes, 'I didn’t know you were coming' and I was like, 'I can see why.'"

Tom Cruise smiling on the red carpet

In 2012, when asked whether he has had plastic surgery, Cruise told Playboy : "I haven't, and I never would." Meanwhile, National Enquirer 's sources said that the Risky Business star was lying. "Insiders say the gifted star remains desperate to maintain his boyish good looks and stay atop of the heap as he approaches his sixties — with the help of plastic surgery!" One cosmetic procedure the actor has never denied is getting his teeth fixed .

When Cruise was in his 20s, back in the early '80s, he had extremely unaligned and discolored teeth. He eventually had teeth whitening and alignment procedures to correct them. In 2001, he also had invisible braces with ceramic brackets. By 2010, he had a massive improvement in his smile. Still, fans noticed that aside from his misaligned middle tooth, his left incisor also appeared bigger than the right one. It still does today, but we are sure the highest-paid actor per word is not bothered about it.

In a 2021 Men's Health feature , the magazine finally spilled Cruise's secrets to defying youth. For his diet, he is reportedly on a "Beckham-devised diet consisting of a just 1200 calories, grilled foods and a noticeable absence of carbohydrate." Nutritional scientist Dr. Paul Clayton told the magazine that carbs generate insulin, which is an aging hormone. "They become glucose molecules in the body, damaging muscle and skin tissues which causes aging," said the Health Defense author. The actor's mindset is apparently a big factor as well. "I don't invalidate it when I can't do something...I say, 'that's interesting' and go with it. It's from there you get your energy," quoted the magazine.

Clinical psychologist Dr. Abigael San said that Cruise's resistance to failure helps in keeping him active. "Never avoid looking at why something went wrong – list all the reasons why it did as soon as you can," said San. "Failure leads to inaction. Planning goals as soon as possible restores a feeling of power and control. If you didn't get a promotion, do all you can to find out why." No wonder the actor is such a beast who is so committed to every project he takes on. It is also what boosts his confidence, making him the sex symbol that he is.

"Being super-informed bestows subtle confidence," explained career consultant Sherridan Hughes. "Everyone else will feel at ease working with you and for you. You're more flexible and adaptable than your peers because whatever happens, you've covered it." Then, of course, there is a whole workout routine for achieving and maintaining that action star physique. "Sea-kayaking, caving... fencing, treadmill, weights... rock-climbing, hiking... I jog... I do so many different activities," Cruise once said when asked how he stays youthful.

Tom Cruise getting off a boat

Sports scientist Anne Elliott said that "variety" is the secret to getting that body. "How we move conveys energy and youth – not how buff we are," she explained. "Regularly switching up cardio and strength work with something like fencing or climbing – like Cruise – maintains flexibility and balance: the first two things that give your age away."

Lastly, it's all about dressing well. "The right fit conveys power and shows you've accepted who you are, physically," said the actor's stylist, Alan Au. "Cruise always wears a well-tailored coat (lapels not too big or small) whether smart casual and his ‘relaxed’ is only just loose enough (too loose looks hand-me-down). Avoid boxy cuts and styles and bring attention up to the face and chest with a lighter top. Make sure only a quarter-inch of sleeve hem is showing from jackets."

This 20-Year-Old Tom Cruise Movie Can Lay The Blueprint For His Future After Mission: Impossible

  • Tom Cruise's action star status faces a challenge as he ages, so exploring villain roles could be the key to his future success after Mission: Impossible .
  • A return to the character depth of his role in Collateral could provide Cruise with exciting new opportunities in his career.
  • Practical stunt work sets Cruise apart in action films, but taking on antagonistic roles could help him stay relevant in the industry.

Tom Cruise has been a movie star for over forty years, and one of his most underrated films could be the key to the next phase of his career after Mission: Impossible . Cruise, in his most recent star era, has become synonymous with daring stunt work and large action set pieces in his blockbuster films. The two most notable examples are his long-running Mission: Impossible franchise, which is currently filming its eighth installment, and Top Gun: Maverick , which was the highest-grossing film of 2022 .

In many ways, Cruise is as popular as he's ever been and remains one of the last examples of a true movie star. There's just one issue he faces, and it's one that will only get worse with time: he's now in his 60s. He's still in amazing shape for his age and can still perform all the stunts his action roles require of him. Yet, at a certain point, Cruise just won't be able to physically accomplish these feats anymore, and the question will arise of what he will do to define the next era of his career.

10 Movies That Defined Tom Cruise's Career

Tom cruise should follow collateral's blueprint after mission: impossible.

The answer regarding a future after Mission: Impossible lies with one of Cruise's most memorable roles as the cold-blooded hitman Vincent in Michael Mann's Collateral . Collateral follows a single night in the life of cab driver Max (Jamie Foxx), who is forced to transport Vincent around L.A. as he crosses off targets on his hit list. The film doesn't just feature excellent action scenes but also a fascinating back-and-forth between the two leads. Many long exchanges of dialogue happen within Max's cab, and the audience sees him and Vincent argue philosophically about the value of human life and their differing ideologies.

Cruise had to train for Collateral since it was an unexpected role, as the actor had never played the main villain of a film before, and to this day hasn't done it again since. The uniqueness of this notion paid off, as Collateral proved to be a healthy hit. It grossed $220 million worldwide from an estimated $65 million budget (via Box Office Mojo ). Cruise's movie star charisma brought layers of charm to Vincent's sociopathic demeanor, and it is still widely considered one of the best performances of Cruise's long and illustrious career. A return to this type of role would be an exciting prospect for the actor.

Every Michael Mann Movie, Ranked Worst To Best

Villain roles can help tom cruise stay relevant.

As Cruise gets older, it'll become more challenging for him to remain at the center of these action franchises. Unlike films like Indiana Jones and The Dial of Destiny , which heavily relied on CGI to assist 81-year-old Harrison Ford with the action scenes, Cruise's movies use their practical stunt work as a selling point. Top Gun: Maverick had Cruise flying real jets , and Mission Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One had him jumping off a massive cliff on a motorcycle. Too much CGI would cheapen the impact of these stunts, which have become a big part of Cruise's brand.

However, if Cruise takes on more antagonistic parts in movies like Collateral going forward, he could not only avoid putting his body at risk in as many huge stunts but also access an untapped well of potential film roles. Cruise would still be a selling point in whatever franchise he chooses to be a part of, and he'd be able to explore the darkness he displayed as Vincent all those years ago. It'd be an exciting development for fans to witness, full of possibilities, and could prove to be the key to Tom Cruise staying relevant through the 2020s and beyond.

Suri Cruise Is All Grown Up After 18th Birthday as She Steps Out With Mom Katie Holmes in NYC

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes ‘ daughter, Suri Cruise , turned 18 earlier this month and is spending time with her mom, 45. The mother-daughter duo were recently spotted in New York City together following Suri’s birthday.

On Monday, April 22, Suri stepped out carrying what appeared to be an iced coffee alongside Katie, according to photos published by Daily Mail . For their day out, the teen wore a red maxi dress with a long denim overcoat and brown boots. As for Katie, she chose a pair of dark denim jeans with a green long-sleeved shirt for the outing.

Suri is rarely seen out in public. Up until now, she was legally a minor, and Katie preferred to keep her daughter away from the spotlight. The image featured a then-toddler-aged Suri as Katie kissed her cheek.

“I am so grateful to be a mom to the sweetest daughter,” Katie captioned the post. “Happy Mother’s Day to all of the moms!!!!”

The former Dawson’s Creek star previously opened up about being a famous parent to a young child during a 2017 interview with Town & Country. While noting that this “business is so unstable, and you never really know where you’re going to be,” Katie explained how she made sure to protect Suri’s childhood.

“My child is the most important person to me, and her upbringing is paramount to my work right now,” Katie said. “It’s very important that I’m present and she has a stable, innocent childhood. I feel so blessed to do what I do, but there’s nothing in the world better than watching your child succeed.”

As for Suri’s dad, Tom, 61, was recently seen at Victoria Beckham ‘ s 50th birthday party over the weekend. The Mission Impossible movie star was reportedly seen breakdancing at the soiree, which was held in London.

Rumors have swirled over the years claiming that Tom has not been present in Suri’s life since his divorce from Katie in 2012. However, neither of the parents has publicly reacted to this speculation.

As a burgeoning actor, Chris Pine had his sights set high.

Speaking with PEOPLE on Wednesday, April 24, at the premiere of his directorial debut Poolman in Los Angeles, the 43-year-old named several actors who got their start in Hollywood before him who he looked up to when he was growing up.

"I remember being 8 years old and dressing up in a fedora and a three-piece suit and pretending to be a character in Bugsy Malone . Or taking a pencil and pretending I was Tom Cruise in Top Gun ," Pine says. "So all of the business appealed to me and all the characters."

"But certainly ... I guess I simultaneously wanted to be Harrison Ford and also wanted to be like Gary Oldman or Lee Marvin , or Walter Brennan," he adds.

Set in Los Angeles, Poolman follows pool attendee Darren Barrenman (Pine), "a native Los Angeleno who spends his days looking after the pool of the Tahitian Tiki apartment block and fighting to make his hometown a better place to live," according to a synopsis of the film, which Pine also co-wrote.

"When he is tasked by a femme fatale to uncover the truth behind a shady business deal, Darren enlists the help of his friends to take on a corrupt politician and a greedy land developer," the synopsis adds. "His investigation reveals a hidden truth about his beloved city and himself."

Pine recalled to PEOPLE at Wednesday's premiere how he "grew up in a specific kind of L.A. that was kind of on the Boulevard of Dreams and kind of on the Boulevard of Broken Dreams."

"I saw the highs and lows of the industry. And I grew up around people that were living the dream and people that desperately wanted to be in the dream," he says. "So it's no accident that everybody in this film, even the bad guy, was a musical-theater major that came out here to do a pilot."

"My girlfriend [in the movie] was once on Melrose Place and is now a Pilates instructor, and my best friend Jack Dennisoff, [played by] Danny DeVito , is a B-movie horror director that never really made it," Pine continues. "So this is really my tribute to that part of Los Angeles."

That doesn't mean the city doesn't have its downsides for him — in fact, he tells PEOPLE that what "frustrates" him about L.A. is "everything."

"The fact that we don't have above-ground public transportation, that the red cars were ripped out, that we don't really have a deep appreciation for some of the fabulous architecture that we have here, that we're building buildings right now that I feel like are built for practicality more than they are in the spirit of beauty," the Wonder Woman actor explains.

"That disappoints me, but it is my home," Pine adds.

Poolman hits theaters May 10.

Suri Cruise makes a bold fashion statement in NYC as she celebrates 18th birthday in new photos

The only daughter of tom cruise and katie holmes is now an adult.

Hanna Fillingham

Suri Cruise is officially an adult, and it looks like she's having the best time celebrating the milestone occasion!

The newly 18-year-old was pictured smiling as she stepped out onto the streets of New York City on the eve of her birthday, carrying an array of gifts as she walked with friends.

What's more, the only daughter of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes turned heads while keeping dry from the rain, with a miniature bright pink frilly umbrella.

She wore an all-denim ensemble consisting of an oversized jacket and jeans, and rocked smokey eyeliner to complete her edgy look.

Suri has kept largely out of the spotlight since her parents' separation in 2012. She was raised in Los Angeles in her early years, before relocating with her mom Katie to New York City.

Katie has raised Suri to be incredibly down-to-earth and the pair have a close relationship.

It's clear that Suri has developed her parents' talents for performing, and showcased her incredible singing voice back in 2022. Suri was heard singing the opening credits of Katie's film, Alone Together, when she was just 15.

Suri Cruise has grown up in New York City

She sang a pitch-perfect rendition of Blue Moon, and her mom was more than proud. Chatting to Yahoo! Entertainment about her daughter's role in the movie, she said: "She's very, very talented. She said she would do it and she recorded it and I let her do her thing.

"That's the way I direct in general: It's like, 'This is what I think we all want - go do your thing'." The mom-of-one was asked why she chose Suri for the job and she said: "I always want the highest level of talent, so I asked her."

Suri Cruise and Katie Holmes

While not so much is known about Suri, Katie has given an insight into her creative personality in the past. Not only is she good at singing, but she enjoys crafts too.

Katie previously revealed that the pair enjoyed many crafty hobbies during the height of the pandemic during lockdown.

"I painted, we had a sewing machine, so we were making quilts, we were cooking; we were on a perpetual vacation," Katie told the sophomore issue of Amazing magazine.

"We were also on a lake and there was a hammock, so I would wake up, sew, have coffee, take a nap on the hammock [laughs]… Oh and, by the way, I have to throw this in; we were staying by a lake, so we probably watched Dirty Dancing ten times. Let me tell you, I danced to it in the living room, and it still holds up. It was fun."

In 2022, Katie gave another rare snippet into her relationship with Suri, telling InStyle: "I love her so much. My biggest goal has always been to nurture her into her individuality. To make sure she is 100 per cent herself and strong, confident, and able. And to know it."

Suri is set to go to college at the end of the summer, making 2024 a big year for the newly-adult. This will be a huge transition for the actress, as her only child is likely going to be flying the nest.

It is thought that Suri has been considering colleges in NYC, meaning that she will still be able to see her mom regularly.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

Tom Cruise may keep quiet about his kids, but the “Top Gun: Maverick” actor is a father of three.

The Golden Globe winner became a parent while married to Nicole Kidman from 1990 to 2001.

After struggling to conceive, the former couple adopted daughter Isabella and son Connor in 1992 and 1995, respectively.

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes hold daughter Suri

Amid their divorce, the “Big Little Lies” alum suffered an ectopic pregnancy . After splitting from Cruise and moving on with Keith Urban , Kidman later welcomed daughters Sunday and Faith via surrogate.

As for Cruise, he moved on with Katie Holmes in 2005. The duo welcomed their daughter, Suri, in April 2006, seven months before tying the knot in Italy.

Holmes filed for divorce from the Oscar nominee in June 2012, and their divorce was settled the following month. Keep scrolling to meet Cruise’s kids.

Isabella Jane Cruise

Kidman and Cruise adopted Isabella shortly after she was born in 1992, and their daughter has followed in the “Mission: Impossible” star’s Scientologist footsteps.

In a March 2019 newsletter for the organization, Isabella thanked her dad “for everything.”

Although Kidman keeps quiet about her relationship with Isabella, she did speak about her adult children in a November 2018 Who interview .

Nicole Kidman sits with Isabella and Connor

“They are adults,” the Emmy winner said of Isabella and Connor at the time. “They are able to make their own decisions.

“ They have made choices to be Scientologists and as a mother, it’s my job to love them,” she continued.

“I know 150 percent that I would give up my life for my children because it’s what my purpose is.”

Connor Anthony Kidman Cruise

Connor was also raised in the Church of Scientology after being adopted in 1995.

Cruise and Kidman’s adult son is active on social media and has documented his fishing trips, his new buzzcut hairstyle and more.

Over the years, Connor and his dad have been photographed on rare outings.

The duo watched basketball games together in Connor’s younger years, and have more recently been spotted boarding a helicopter and hanging out on the “Jack Reacher” set.

Suri Cruise

Tom Cruise smiles with Suri

Holmes gave birth to Suri in 2006 and has maintained a close bond with her daughter.

The “Dawson’s Creek” alum told Town & Country in 2017 that she provides the little one with a “stable and innocent” childhood .

Cruise, however, still has “no part” of his youngest child’s life , a source exclusively told Page Six in March 2022.

Suri Cruise walks on street

In a 2012 defamation lawsuit against Bauer Media, the “Jerry Maguire” star said he didn’t see Suri for three months after his and Holmes’ breakup.

“Listen, when there is a divorce … things change,” Cruise said. “It’s not an ideal situation.”

Ex-Scientologist Leah Remini has asserted that Cruise “can’t be connected” to Suri because Holmes is considered a “suppressive person” or “enemy” in the religion.

Suri cruise rings in 18th birthday in nyc while tom on set in london, suri cruise milestone 18th bday in rainy nyc ... dad tom on london set.

Suri Cruise is celebrating adulthood -- let that sink in -- as she rings in her 18th birthday in NYC by taking a rainy day stroll with a friend.

Despite the dreary weather, Suri didn't let a little rain wash out her big day ... she happily chatted away with her pal while under the shelter of her pink umbrella.

Suri had a gift bag in hand during her walk around town, suggesting the celebrations were already underway. It remains to be seen if there will be any larger festivities later -- she leads a pretty low-key lifestyle -- but ya gotta figure her mom Katie Holmes has something planned for such a big birthday.

As for Suri's dad, Tom Cruise , he most certainly won't be joining in on the birthday fun for a couple reasons.

First of all, Tom's across the pond from Suri right now -- he's busy filming a new project in London.

But, more importantly, the father and daughter reportedly haven't had a close relationship since 2012.

In fact, the last time they were publicly seen together was at Disney World that summer. That's also the same year Katie filed for divorce from Tom, when Suri was just 6-years-old.

At this point, they've been estranged twice as long as they were together -- so, the Tom factor's probably NBD for her.

Suri's eligible to vote for the first time. They really do grow up so fast!!!

Bill skarsgård's boy kills world blocked from box office top 10 by 45-year-old classic.

The Bill Skarsgård action movie Boy Kills World loses out on a Top 10 box office slot in its opening weekend, falling behind a 45-year-old classic.

  • The new Bill Skarsgård action movie Boy Kills World opens to a slow weekend at the box office.
  • The movie earned $1.6 million, placing it at No. 11 on the domestic chart.
  • It has fallen behind the 45th-anniversary re-release of Alien , which took No. 10.

Boy Kills World is off to a rough start at the box office, losing out on a Top 10 slot to a 45-year-old classic. The new action-comedy movie was directed by Moritz Mohr from a screenplay by Tyler Burton Smith and Arend Remmers. It stars Bill Skarsgård as the titular Boy, a deaf and mute fighter who has vowed revenge on the people who killed his family in a near-future dystopia. The cast of the movie also includes Jessica Rothe, Famke Janssen, and H. Jon Benjamin as the inner voice of Boy.

Per Deadline , the Boy Kills World release is kicking off with a slow opening weekend projected to take in a 3-day total of $1.6 million at the domestic box office. This will see it land at No. 11 on the chart, preventing it from holding a slot in the Top 10 during its debut. It has lost out to several other movies, including the new releases Challengers and Unsung Hero , the holdover hits Godzilla x Kong and Civil War , and even the 45th-anniversary re-release of Ridley Scott's sci-fi-horror classic Alien , which is set to take No. 10 with $1.78 million.

Is There Hope For The Boy Kills World Box Office?

The new bill skarsgård movie needs strong word of mouth.

Boy Kills World opening below its original $2 to $3 million projections likely spells bad news for the production. While its budget has not yet been officially reported, the average budget for the feature slate that Hammerstone Studios producer Alex Lebovici is currently managing is $18 million. As movie theaters keep half of ticket sales, meaning movies generally need to earn back twice their production budgets in order to turn a profit, this would likely place the break-even point for the movie somewhere between $20 and $50 million , a total it seems unlikely to reach if it doesn't see growth.

Boy Kills World Ending Explained

Boy Kills World reviews may not be strong enough to help the movie rise above this lukewarm debut. While the movie has a Fresh score on the review aggregator service Rotten Tomatoes, at the time of writing it has a 61% critics rating , which is just 2% away from the line past which it would be considered Rotten. While audiences have so far rated it slightly higher at 69%, this may not reflect a level of enthusiasm that could fuel exponential growth at the box office.

Boy Kills World has received a CinemaScore of B- from opening weekend moviegoers.

It seems entirely possible that Boy Kills World will lose money, or at least barely scrape together a profit. Another factor that isn't working in its favor is that the summer movie season is heating up in May beginning with the rival action-comedy The Fall Guy starring Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt. That competing title may steal away action-hungry audience members who could otherwise have decided to see the Skarsgård movie in its second weekend.

Now older and more bloodthirsty than ever, Boy heads into the fray to claim revenge while liberating the world from her tyrannical grasp.
