Things to do in London near The Shard

One of the reasons London is such an endlessly exciting city is because it is forever evolving. And along with other parts of the English capital, the London Bridge area of the city is changing at a pretty fast pace. As a native Londoner I still remember the area around London Bridge before The Shard revolutionized the scene, and I can promise you this part of town has has come a long way in recent years.

I also remember the level of excitement I felt when The Shard was being built and when I got a glimpse of The Shard before it opened to the public back in 2013.

Fast forward to today and tourists head to London Bridge specifically to see Europe’s tallest building – but what do they do after they descend to ground level again?

I’m constantly surprised by how much there is to see and do in the London Bridge and Southwark area – and how quickly new attractions are being added to the list, so I’ve compiled this 2019 guide to things to do near The Shard – from museums to shops, street food to beauty salons.

15 Unexpected Things To Do Near The Shard

There’s enough going on in the shadows of The Shard building to keep you entertained for days, but join me as I explore London Bridge and find a host of great things to do near The Shard, none of which involve ascending Europe’s tallest building and almost all of which let you keep your feet planted firmly on the ground.

1. Get Pampered To Perfection Where: O’Sullivans Salon

When: Weekdays 10-8. Saturdays 10-6

things to do near the shard Subway salon

Think a salon inside a station is just for an emergency stop? Think again. Reviews are stellar for O’Sullivans’ London Bridge branch, located inside the Shard Retail Arcade whit sits directly opposite the Shard entrance.

I can see why when I try out the service first hand. I’m impressed by the friendly welcome, the relaxed atmosphere and the expert cut and blow dry provided by Marco. I leave also sporting a perfect gel manicure courtesy of Jamie which I can’t stop running through my bouncy new hair. Appointments are efficient so even after a pampering session I still have the whole day left to explore the area, but I do so looking my best.

The salon uses the best products on the market in my book: Kerastase for hair and CND for nails. So whether you want a total revamp or a quick refresh, this is the place to book into near The Shard.

2. Fill Up At A Farmers Market Where: London Bridge Farmers Market

When: Every Tuesday from 9-2

If you’re looking for a locally sourced lunch and are in the area around The Shard on a Tuesday you can’t go wrong with London Bridge farmers market, which takes place in the stunning and historic surroundings of Guys Campus, King’s College.

All the fayre is from within a 100 miles of the M25 and you can find producers of everything from homemade moussaka to artisan bread and cakes, and there’s plenty of space to sit down and enjoy your chosen goodies. The market is part of a larger network of London Farmers Markets across the city.

3. Say It With Flowers Where: Igloo Flowers

When: Weekdays 7-9. Saturdays 8-6 Sundays 9-5

A gorgeous selection of impeccably presented fresh blooms will make your day (or someone else’s)  – and are easy to pick up on your way to or from London Bridge station, as Igloo is located inside the Shard Arcade. This locally-owned business began life as a single florist shop in nearby Bermondsey Street before expanding to have branches in other London Bridge locations such as Borough Market.

4. Enjoy Quiet Contemplation Where: Guy’s Chapel

When: Daily 9-5

things to do near the shard guys chapel

This 18th-century Chapel is quite literally within the shadow of the imposing Shard building, and opposite the all new Science Gallery, but it offers a contrasting perspective of London, with traditional stained and leaded glass rather than the more modern glass for which the neighbouring buildings are so celebrated.

The church contains the tomb of Thomas Guy, and a marble sculpture to the hospital’s founder by John Bacon. Like most churches it is open to people of all faiths provided you are respectful, and holds a full program of Catholic masses and religious prayer services throughout the year.

5. Ogle The Oldest Operating Theatre in Europe Where: The Old Operating Theatre Museum

When: Daily 10.30-5 (closed on Mondays until 2)

things to do near the shard old operating theatre museum

A very different kind of climb compared to The Shard here, as you ascend a narrow 52-step wooden spiral staircase to reach the church bell tower, which plays host to The Old Operating Theatre Museum.

The history of medicine and surgery pre-anaesthesia makes for a slightly gruesome subject, and as well as an exhibit stuffed with medical curiosities, the shop’s small collection of souvenirs fully reflect the theme.

There’s a quirky events programme including talks, and even horror movie nights, for those who want to immerse themselves in the location’s spooky syllabus.

6. Have A Coffee With A Conscience Were: Change Please Coffee Van

When: Daily 7-4

things to do near the shard guys coffee

Imagine if buying yourself a coffee could change a life? The idea behind Change Please coffee vans is just that: the mobile coffee units are all staffed by previously homeless individuals who have received training and support to transform their lives by filling the ever-expanding gap for caffeine in Londoners’ lives. The concept is simple but powerful, and has pride of place in the London bridge area with 2 locations: one pitch opposite The Shard, and one at Borough Market.

7.  Rummage For Vintage Where: Vinegar Yard

When: Monday – Saturday: 7.30 – 11 (closes at 10 on Sundays)

Things to do near the shard Vinegar Yard

The newest addition to the London Bridge scene is all about the old rather than the new. Vinegar Yard is a destination for flea markets and retro finds, as well as art and street food, all served up with a startling view of The Shard.

But get down there soon, with the ever changing vista of London Bridge and the building boom it’s not guaranteed how long this all-day beer garden will be available on tap.

8. Be Scintillated By Science Where: Science Gallery London

When: Daily 10-6 (closed Mondays)

This huge and impressive modern gallery space is completely free for anyone to explore, boasts a great cafe with views of the courtyard outside and has a design-led gift shop which is well worth a look.

Since signing up for Paperless Post I haven’t bought many cards, but I adore this one!

9. See Mind-Blowing Glassblowing Where: London Glassblowing

When: Daily 10-6 (11-5 Sundays)

Things to do near the shard - glass studio

Peter Layton’s London Glassblowing Studio is one of the foremost studios in Europe for hand-made glass art and has been on Bermondsey Street for a decade.

The workshop and gallery is open to the public, so after you’ve admired The Shard itself, you can learn how glass on a much smaller scale can wow you even more.

As well as the series of exhibitions and live demonstrations of this amazing artform, you can book for bespoke experience days and make your own piece of blown glass on site.

10. Shop & Save The Children Where: Mary’s Living & Giving Shop

When: 10-6 (5 on Sundays)

Things to do near the shard - charity shop

In an area as trendy as Bermondsey Street even the charity shops have celebrity credentials and sell designer brands. Mary’s Living & Giving is an upmarket retail store which is the brainchild of UK retail guru Mary Portas.

The shop in spitting distance of The Shard is as packed with high end bargains as the other outlets in similarly swish parts of London, like Westbourne Grove and Primrose Hill.

Things to do near the shard - charity shopping

I pick up a near perfect condition Massimo Dutti handbag for £25 – and I leave with a new bag, a smile on my face, and the knowledge that my shopping habit might have actually helped someone.

11. Worship High End Hong Kong Cuisine Where: Duddells

When: 12-3 & 6-11 (10.30 on Sundays)

Things to do near the shard - duddells exterior

The Michelin-starred Cantonese and dim sum restaurants are famous in Hong Kong, but this London Bridge branch is the first in the UK. The interior of the early 13th century St Thomas Church has been transformed by the designer behind Soho Farmhouse to make a temple to delectable Dim Sum.

If you’re in town on a Sunday try taking on the bottomless brunch – with or without the free flowing Perrier Jouët champagne.

12. Do Some Ship Shape Shopping Where: Hay’s Galleria

When: Opening hours of shops and restaurants vary

Things to do near the shard - Hays

Once known as Hay’s Wharf, this was the key landing and storage point for much of the dry goods, including tea, imported into London by ship. As such it earned the nickname ‘the larder of London’. Today the beautifully restored Grade II listed building is home to a smattering of shops and restaurants and a huge bronze ship sculpture called The Navigators.

Things to do near the shard - Hays Thames view

The Galleria is also a great access point to one of London Bridge’s other important viewpoints aside from The Shard: The River Thames. From the rear of the Galleria you get panoramic views of the water and of Tower Bridge.

13. See A Splash Of Colour Where: The Fashion & Textile Museum

When: Tuesdays – Saturdays 11–6 (late until 8 on Thursdays, closes at 5 on Sundays)

Things to do near the shard- fashion museum

There’s a surprising number of museums within walking distance of London Bridge Station, but this fashion museum which was founded by British designer Zandra Rhodes in 2003, is a lot more colourful than its counterparts,.

Alongside London fashion focused exhibitions there are talks, tours and events to enjoy for visiting fashion fans.

14. Seek Out Blue Plaques Where: St. Thomas Street, London Bridge

Things to do near the shard Blue plaques

Whether you’re a tourist in London or a local it’s always fun to stumble on a commemorative blue plaque celebrating the history of the area. There are relatively few in the London Bridge area but you are bound to see a special Guy’s and St. Thomas’ blue plaque if you spend the day here – it shows the location John Keats lived at in the early 1800’s.

15. Save The Best For Last Where: Borough Market

When: Monday-Saturday 10-5 (limited traders on Mondays & Tuesdays)

Things to do near the shard - Borough Market

You simply cannot come to London Bridge without having a meander around Borough Market – everything from oysters to Ethiopian food is available in one of London’s most iconic outdoor produce markets.

In fact even if you don’t consider yourself a foodie the atmosphere and history will inspire you and help you get the most out of your day exploring the London Bridge area.

Want to take in sweeping city vistas from cloud-brushing heights? For unparalleled 360-degree views over London, you can't beat the View from The Shard .

Alex Landon

Obviously, we think London is one of the best and most beautiful cities in the world. But sometimes, you just can’t fully appreciate it from ground level – sometimes, you just have to get high. At the View from The Shard , you’ll be the highest visitors to London, towering a whopping 800ft (244m) above the ground , and enjoying some of the most panoramic views in town . Life looks pretty different from 72 storeys up. Read on to make the most of your visit to the View from The Shard , which has now reopened to the public.

View from The Shard overview

View from The Shard

A relatively new addition to the London skyline, The Shard is nevertheless one of the most popular buildings in London. Opened in 2012, it stands 309 metres tall, boasts 95 storeys, and is the tallest structure in both the UK and Western Europe . Easily the biggest draw is the View from The Shard , the viewing platform and sky-high bar which has been welcoming visitors since 2013.

View from The Shard

Your trip starts with the obligatory diversion through security, and then to interactive screens telling the history of London and The Shard, before you reach the lifts. A high-speed journey to the 68th floor includes graphics to make it seem as if you’re ascending through the roofs of London landmarks, including St Paul’s and the British Museum . Once up in the sky, you can check out the merch at The Sky Boutique (London’s highest shop), or ascend to Level 69, where you’ll find the main observation deck, including the only 360-degree view in London. Up here, you can admire the views, learn more by using one of the interactive telescopes, or simply prop up the in-house bar with a cocktail in hand.

View from The Shard

For the highest possible views, head up to Level 72. The highest spot of The Shard that’s open to the public, this observation deck partially open air (and thus a tad windy), but quieter than the more commercialised lower levels. From your perch above the city, sights including Tower Bridge, Canary Wharf, St Paul’s Cathedral , and Wembley Stadium can all be glimpsed. You can even watch over the city from the bathrooms, giving you panoramic vistas from the porcelain throne – luckily, there are automatic blinds you can shut if you fancy some privacy.

Things to see at the View from The Shard

View from The Shard

In a word, everything. The name gives it away; you’re here for the views, and on clear days, you can see up to 40 miles away. Handily, there’s a good weather guarantee – if you can’t spot at least three of the London Eye, St Paul’s, the Walkie Talkie , Tower Bridge , and One Canada Square (that pointy Canary Wharf building) on your visit, they’ll let you return for free  within three months. Isn’t that nice of them?

View from The Shard

Look north, and you’ll have the Tower of London, the Walkie Talkie, and the Gherkin in your eyeline. Eastwards, sights to spot include Canary Wharf, the O2, and Tower Bridge. To the south, the landmarks are a little more scarce, but you’ll catch sight of Battersea Power Station and the Oval cricket ground here. Over in the west, you’ve got the heavy hitters: the London Eye, Big Ben, the Houses of Parliament, Hyde Park, and Buckingham Palace.

View from The Shard

Much like a visit to the Eiffel Tower or Empire State Building, another thing you tend to see at the View from The Shard are proposals. Maybe it’s the gorgeous views, maybe it’s the lack of oxygen, but there’s no shortage of guys and gals popping the question up here. Thinking about proposing to your SO? The View from The Shard offers secluded 30-minute hires of the space exclusively for proposals, which is plenty of time to work up the courage, splutter out a speech, find the ring, cry some happy tears, and get in a few pictures and phone calls. Sorted.

When to visit the View from The Shard

View from The Shard

There’s no bad time to head to the View from The Shard, really. If you go during the day, you’ll have the best chance of seeing all the London landmarks, and it tends to be a tad quieter than the sunset sessions. Having said that, watching the sun go down from the 72nd floor is a sight you don’t get very often, so if it takes your fancy, then go for it. Meanwhile, a nighttime visit offers the opportunity to see the twinkling lights of London spread before you. At Christmastime, the top twenty storeys are illuminated in a festive display , so December is also a popular month for an excursion.

View from The Shard

If you’re looking to turn your visit into even more of a special occasion , why not attend one of their regular Moët & Chandon Champagne Parties ? You’re invited to don your glad rags, ascend to the heavens, and get increasing merry on a steady supply of champagne. It starts with a glass of  Moët Brut Impérial Rose , and then goes… wherever you’d like it to go, I guess! Throw in a DJ spinning out house, dance and old skool party tunes, and your View from The Shard visit just got even more memorable.

Restaurants, pubs, and bars near the View from The Shard

They don’t exactly come cheap, however, as you won’t find a cocktail here for less than £12. If you’re willing to sacrifice a few floors for a more relaxed atmosphere, then Gong Bar  should suit you nicely (they also have a swimming pool, but you’ll need to be a hotel guest to use it).

Puncturing the skies above London, the dramatic splinter-like form of the Shard has become an icon of the city and is one of the tallest buildings in Europe. The scene from the 244m-high viewing platforms on floors 69 and 72 is like none other in town, but it comes at an equally lofty price; book online in advance for a potential discount. Premium tickets come with a good-weather guarantee, meaning you might be able to return for free.

To take in the view for less, visit one of the building's restaurants or bars; you'll pay half the viewing-platform ticket price for a cocktail at Aqua Shard , where the views are still spectacular.

Shard

The Shard: your ultimate guide

However impressive The Shard is from the outside, there's nothing like the view from the inside. Get the most out of your visit with our ultimate guide to The Shard

The Shard, London's tallest building, was not universally well-received when it was completed in 2012. For every fan of architect Renzo Piano's crystalline, church steeple-inspired skyscraper – rescued from the jaws of recession by Qatari investors in 2008 – there's at least one detractor, angry that the 1,016-foot-tall hulk was ever allowed to bully its way into sightline omnipresence.

But if views  of  The Shard are controversial, the views  from  it are not. At 800 feet, the building's ticketed viewing platform  The View from The Shard  is nearly double the height of its closest competitor, the  London Eye . From that high up London is Lego, the Thames a blue shoelace. Even the peaks of the City, immediately north, appear suddenly quaint. So, featuring where to eat to what to see a nearby, here's our sky-high guide to a trip up The Shard.

What's all this about The View from the Shard?

Chances are your trip up western Europe's tallest building is for  The View from The Shard , a ticketed viewing platform with 360-degree views across the capital and beyond (up to 40 miles on a clear day). The attraction spans three levels of decks (the bottom two enclosed, the third open to the elements above) on floors 68 to 72 of the skyscraper, reached by two super-smooth, high-speed lifts taking just 30 seconds each. Up top, Digital 'Tell:scopes' update the coin-in-the-slot binoculars at traditional viewpoints: touchscreens locate and provide information about important landmarks, zoom in, and toggle between views from different times of the day.

How about opening times and tickets info?

The View from The Shard  is open daily from 10am to 10pm. Winter hours, starting in October, are Sunday to Wednesday, 10am to 7pm; and Thursday to Saturday, 10am-10pm. Please note that last viewings start one hour before closing. Tickets cost £25.95 in advance for adults (£30.95 on the day) and £19.95 for children aged 4-15 (£24.95 on the day).

Hang on, where actually is The Shard?

Up. More specifically, The Shard is in Southwark, just two minutes from London Bridge Station (accessible by rail and the Northern and Jubilee lines tube lines). If you've got 10 minutes to spare, alight at Monument tube station (on the Circle and District lines) and behold The Shard's towering majesty as you cross London Bridge. The site can also be reached by more than a dozen buses that stop outside the  entrance to London Bridge Station, including the 43, 48, 141, 149 and 521.

The Ultimate Guide to visiting the view from The Shard

The view from the shard ultimate guide.

When looking across the London skyline, it’s pretty hard to miss The Shard; (it is 306-metres high and the second tallest free-standing structure in the UK, after all). The Shard, (also known as “The Shard of Glass” or “The London Bridge Tower”), boasts 87 stories, 12 floors of residence, three restaurants, an open-air observation deck, and a viewing gallery. But for visitors and tourists, The Shard offers an amazing viewing experience of the London skyline that you won’t be able to find anywhere else in the city – or even the world.

The Shard was built to resemble “a shard of glass through the heart of historic London;” (hence the name) and was first constructed in 2009. The building contains facades of angled glass planes which reflect both the sunlight and the sky, and in doing so its appearance miraculously changes with the weather and seasons. The Shard was also built to maintain stability under “onerous” conditions thanks to its post-tensioned concrete floors, load-bearing pillars, and a tapering shape which allows it to sway to a maximum of 400 millimeters.

Because of its unique and ground-breaking design, The Shard won first place at the 2014 Emporis Skyscraper Awards, which recognizes buildings over 100 metres completed in the previous year. The judges of the competition decided to award The Shard with the winning prize because of its immediately recognizable construction and its representation as “London’s new emblem.”

The Shard has appeared in several different movies, films and TV shows since its completion, such as The Snowman And The Snowdog, in a 2013 Doctor Who episode “The Bells of Saint John” and even a 2014 episode of The Simpsons titled “Treehouse of Horror.”

The View from the Shard Highlights

The View From The Shard (or The Shard’s main viewing gallery) is The Shard’s primary highlight that shouldn’t be missed by any visitor.

The View From The Shard is located at level 69 (spanning three levels of decks up to level 72) and it allows visitors to view a spectacular 360-degree view of the London skyline. On a clear day visitors can easily see up to 40 miles (or 64 km) of London’s skyline, including St. Paul’s Cathedral, the Tower of London, the Tower Bridge, London Bridge station and even the Houses of Parliament.

Visitors can also use The Shard’s digital telescopes (or “tell:scopes”) which have touch screens so you can zoom in on each tourist attraction, and read more on over 200 different tourist attractions in London. You can also view some pre-recorded time views of the city, so you can see what the tourist attractions look like during different times of the day or night.

At level 72, where the two separate panels of The Shard taper together, visitors can view the sky through the slanted glance and open-air tip, which provides a once-in-a-lifetime viewing experience.

On the ground-floor of The Shard, visitors can watch a screen play footage of London’s various attractions (like the Canary Wharf, London Eye and Mudchute Park and Farm), and view a panel illustrating some of the most recognizable faces of London (like The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, the Spice Girls, and many more).

Even taking the lift is a tourist activity in itself, thanks to a lightning speed which can take you up the higher levels of the building within seconds.

Special Tips

Getting There

Visiting the view from the shard.

Be prepared to schedule at least 45 to 60 minutes if you want to visit The Shard’s viewing gallery, and you will also need to pass through an airport-style security scanner once you enter the building.

Hand-held electronic guides with headphones are available for all visitors, which give detailed information on the different landmarks you can see from the viewing platforms during your visit.

If you happen to visit The Shard on a rainy or foggy day, you will be issued a free ticket so you can return to The Shard within three months. If during your visit you miss out on seeing at least three major London landmarks (The London Eye, St. Paul’s Cathedral, The Gherkin, Tower Bridge or One Canada Square), you can speak to a member of staff at the ticket desk on the first level for your free return ticket.

Ticket prices and Opening Hours

Unfortunately the admission prices of The Shard are as steep as its height, but don’t let that deter you from visiting this fantastic tourist attraction in London.

You can save money by purchasing pre-booked tickets (which cost £24.95 for adults and £18.95 for children), and there are also a limited amount of “walk-up” tickets available each day (£29.95 for adults and £23.95 for children) if you don’t mind waiting for the next available session. Otherwise, you could pay as much £100 (per adult or per child) if you want to go up to The Shard’s viewing gallery immediately.

Children under the age of four can get into The Shard for free, however their tickets need to be booked beforehand through The Shard’s official website.

The Shard’s viewing platform (The View From The Shard) is open every day (except December 25th) from:

  • 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. (with last entry at 9:30 p.m.) from April 1st to October 24th
  • 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. (last entry at 6 p.m.) Sunday to Wednesday from October 25th to March 31st
  • 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. (last entry at 9 p.m.) Thursday to Saturday from October 25th to March 31st

Because The Shard also hosts numerous events throughout the year, opening times may vary. Be sure to check out the official website before you visit.

How to visit the shard for free: a local’s guide.

Get the lowdown on how to visit The Shard for free

The Shard is one of London’s most recognisable landmarks and has become a must-see attraction for Londoners and visitors alike.

Soaring to a height of almost 310 meters above the River Thames, it is the tallest building in the United Kingdom and the seventh-tallest in Europe. It is home to The View from The Shard, the highest viewpoint in London.

Take it from me; the views from this lofty height are sensational. But this panorama will blast a hole in your wallet.

The good news is that there are two ways that you can gain free entry to The Shard: using a London tourist pass and visiting one of the building’s bars or restaurants. Here’s how to do it.

What is The View from The Shard?

The View from the Shard comprises three observation decks at the top of The Shard building- on the 68th, 69th and 72nd floors – offering 360-degree views of London and up to 40 miles beyond. The 72nd-floor viewing platform rises 256 metres above ground level, making it twice the height of any other viewing platform in London.

How Much is a Ticket for The View from Shard?

In 2023, tickets for The View from The Shard start from £28. The best prices are available if you book more than four days in advance.

What Can You See from The Shard?

For my money, The View from The Shard is one of the best viewpoints in London.

Looking west, London’s bridges follow the curve of the river, including the iconic Tower Bridge. From your lofty vantage point, famous landmarks such as St Paul’s Cathedral, the Tower of London , the Walkie-Talkie building and The Gherkin look like toy models.

Further west, you can see The London Eye and the Palace of Westminster.

Downriver, the shimmering towers of Canary Wharf and the O2 are clearly visible.

aerial view from the shard of the river thames and skyscrapers and tower bridge

In the far north, there’s the arch of Wembley Stadium and the open expanse of Hampstead Heath. Landmarks are a little scarcer to the south, but a notable exception is the towers of Battersea Power Station.

How to Visit The Shard for Free

So you’d like to see these views but don’t want to part with £28+ of your hard-earned cash? I don’t blame you.

There are two ways to gain free entry to the Shard: using one of the London tourist passes or visiting one of the restaurants in the Shard .

Let me be clear; neither of these ways is completely free. But if you are canny you will pay less than the price of a ticket for The View from The Shard and maybe – just maybe – take in the view whilst sipping on an Espresso Martini.

Visiting The Shard with a London Pass

Like many major cities, London has tourist passes: the Go City® London All-Inclusive Pass and London Explorer Pass. These give you free entry to many of the city’s top attractions, including The View from The Shard.

Unlike many traditional city passes, the  London Explorer Pass  offers access to a predetermined number of attractions over a generous 60-day time window. The London All-Inclusive Pass provides access to an unlimited number of included attractions over a predetermined number of days.

For most first-time visitors to London, these passes can save you money. Even as a Londoner, I would be tempted to buy the London Explorer Pass. But whether either of these passes will be good value will depend on what else you plan to see and do in London.

You can check the price of the London Explorer Pass  here and the London All-Inclusive Pass here .

Restaurants at The Shard

The Shard is much more than just a viewpoint. This vertical city is home to a 26-floor office complex, restaurants, the 5-star Shangri-La Hotel and apartments for ten lucky residents.

There are six restaurants at The Shard. Although none of these reach the dizzy heights of level 68 and beyond, Aqua Shard is considered to offer the best views in the building. Located on Level 31 its double-height glass walls envelop you in London’s skyline.

It’s not cheap but the food is reliably good and it also offers weekend brunch and afternoon tea.

plate of eggs benedict

Although the restaurant takes walk-ins, booking ahead is recommended.

A cheaper option to visit The Shard for free is to have a drink in the bar at Aqua Shard . This operates on a walk-in basis only and is subject to capacity.

But Aqua Shard is not your only option for free entry to The Shard. Here’s a quick lowdown on its other bars and restaurants with a view.

Gong – this sophisticated bar on the 52nd floor of The Shard serves champagne and cocktails with a jaw-dropping view thrown in for free.

Sky Lounge – this elegant lounge on level 34 serves drinks and light bites and offers a Sunday Brunch

Ting restaurant . – located on the 35th floor, its floor-to-ceiling windows offer those prized 360-degree views of London. It serves British dishes with an Asian twist and is open for breakfast and afternoon tea.

Hutong – this Chinese restaurant on level 33 is open for lunch and dinner.

Oblix – on the 32nd floor, this restaurant is split across two different spaces offering views across central London from East to West. It serves award-winning cocktails and afternoon tea

Reservations are recommended for all.

How to Get to The Shard

It’s easy to get to The View from The Shard from London Bridge Underground Station or London Bridge (railway) Station.

When exiting the underground station, turn right out of the ticket hall and follow the signs for The Shard or Joiner Street. If you are walking from London Bridge Station, turn left and go down the escalator.

The Shard is also served by buses 43, 48, 141, 149, and 521, which stop at the bus station outside the main entrance to London Bridge Station. London hop-on-hop-off buses also stop close by.

The Shard’s address is Joiner Street, London SE1 9QU. An  area map is here .

A Fabulous Free Alternative to The Shard

Wrapped around the top of the Walkie-Talkie building, the Sky Garden is also a popular London viewpoint. Best of all, the Sky Garden is completely free.

The Sky Garden is more than a viewpoint . It is a lush leafy sanctuary in the sky, home to Mediterranean and South African species that have been chosen to work in harmony with the space and light.

Like The Shard, it offers 360-degree views of London, albeit from a lower vantage point. There is more space to wander around and sit, and there is a reasonably priced bar.

kyscrapers through the curved windows of sky garden london framed by palm trees

The downside? You need to book in advance and entry slots can be hard to come by unless you are quick off the mark

15 Unexpected Things To Do Near The Shard & London Bridge

THE SHARD & LONDON BRIDGE

One of the reasons London is such an endlessly exciting city is because it is forever evolving. And along with other parts of the English capital, the London Bridge area of the city is changing at a pretty fast pace. As a native Londoner I still remember the area around London Bridge before The Shard revolutionized the scene, and I can promise you this part of town has has come a long way in recent years.

things to do near the shard courtyard

I also remember the level of excitement I felt when The Shard was being built and when I got a glimpse of The Shard before it opened to the public back in 2013.

Fast forward to today and tourists head to London Bridge specifically to see Europe’s tallest building – but what do they do after they descend to ground level again?

things to do near the shard phone box

The concept is simple but powerful, and has pride of place in the London bridge area with 2 locations: one pitch opposite The Shard, and one at Borough Market.
