Israel's 10 Best Travel Tech Start-Ups

Natasha Dzhola /

Tech & Entrepreneurship Editor

Often referred to as the ‘start-up nation’, Israel punches above its weight in high-tech innovation. Home to an impressive number of global unicorns and a disproportionate number of successful start-ups given its small size, Israel’s tech community is now stepping forward as a global leader in travel tech. Creating everything from B2B solutions for the hotel industry to platforms changing the way travellers find destination inspiration, these are Israel’s hottest travel tech start-ups.

Jerusalem-based Aspectiva uses artificial intelligence (AI) and natural language processing to analyse consumer opinions from across the web, turning them into comprehensive and valuable insights.

Founders Ezra Daya and Eyal Hurwitz found that while travellers often ‘turn to customer reviews for advice, they are only left more confused by the massive amount of customer opinions that were often irrelevant to their own personal concerns’. By generating personalised recommendations, Aspectiva gives travellers looking for anything from hotel reviews to restaurant recommendations the power to make more informed decisions, while brands benefit from increased online conversion rates.

Nes Tziona-based SeeVoov has developed a trip planning concept around an interactive video planner.

Users start by choosing a destination and the kind of vacation they’d like to have in that country (from ‘sightseeing’ to ‘gastronomy’), and are presented with videos about popular tourist attractions, restaurants or museums in those locations. After choosing the points of interest that look most appealing, SeeVoov generates a trip plan, enabling users to book flights, hotels and other reservations without leaving the platform.

Tel Aviv-based FairFly maximises savings on business travel by tracking flights after booking.

The real-time data platform, backed by Waze founder Uri Levine, monitors flight fluctuations after a purchase. If the price of a flight drops so far that the potential savings make up for the cancellation fee, FairFly automatically cancels the original itinerary and books the new one.

New York City-based, Israel-founded Roomer is an online marketplace for selling and buying discounted hotel reservations.

Travellers who can’t use their pre-booked hotel rooms due to a last-minute change of plans can post their reservation on Roomer. The platform then verifies the booking and allows other travellers to purchase the discounted spaces, saving both parties money.

Tel Aviv-based Arbitrip is reducing business travel costs with AI by giving travellers tailored room recommendations and tracking price fluctuations after point of purchase.

If a room drops in price, Arbitrip will automatically rebook at the cheaper rate. If a nicer room or a better hotel becomes available for the same price, the platform will upgrade the booking at no extra cost.

Tel Aviv-based Simgo offers travellers virtual mobile phone SIMs, letting people roam the globe without replacing their physical SIM card.

Simgo users can choose their own mobile phone operator anywhere in the world and never have to fear going off-grid.

Travel without worrying about going off-grid

Jerusalem-based Bitemojo offers self-guided food tours with nothing but a mobile phone.

The app takes users on a journey through the given community’s history, identifying key points of interest and local cuisine along the route.

Haifa-based Pruvo tracks existing hotel reservations and notifies travelers when the price drops.

Users email their reservation to Pruvo and if a price shift is detected, are given the option to cancel and rebook at a lower price.

Tel Aviv-based Bidflyer auctions airline’s unsold seats to travellers in real time.

Benefiting both airlines and their customers, BidFlyer users gain from attractive prices while airlines profit on otherwise unsold stock.

Eilat Is On Track To Be Israel’s Next Travel Tech Startup Hotspot

The City of Eilat. Leon Yaakov via Flickr, Public Domain

When Israel took on the start-up nation moniker, cities like Tel Aviv, Haifa, and Herzliya immediately came to mind as vibrant high-tech scenes. Today, even historical and spiritual Jerusalem is earning a spot on the start-up map as home to vision-based driver assistance system Mobileye, acquired by Intel, and DIY lifestyle firm Hometalk. Global venture firms such as OurCrowd and Jerusalem Venture Partners also see a bright future for the city, setting up new funds and incubators .

But what of Eilat, the southern port and resort town on the Red Sea known more as an escape for most Israelis due to its lavish beaches, tourist attractions and high concentration of hotels? Could it make its own mark on the industry?

SEE ALSO: A Look Inside Israel’s Booming Travel Tech Industry

The entrepreneurs behind the Eilat Hub, the co-working location, incubator, accelerator, and high-tech platform all tucked into one unassuming space in an industrial area just 10 minutes from the airport, seem to think so. They are seeking to turn the hub into a center of innovation and creation in southern Israel. And their current focus is on travel tech.

“Just two-and-a-half years ago, there were zero startups in Eilat,” Eilat Hub CEO Or Haviv tells NoCamels during a conference earlier this month. Today, he says the Eilat Hub has 30 in its portfolio and runs over 114 programs for startups of all levels with tens of thousands of meetups throughout the year.

“We are one of the fastest growing hubs in the world,” he says, “Everyday we have one to five startups knocking on our door.”

Eilat: Travel tech city

Israel may be known for its tech prowess in cybersecurity, agriculture, autonomous driving, and digital health, but it’s also making strides in travel technology.

Israel is currently home to more than 300 travel tech startups , making an impact in all travel sectors including hospitality, hotel management, and tourism. Booking.com, the search engine for travel and lodging reservations,  announced it would open an R&D center in Tel Aviv last year, and then revealed  plans to move to the Azrieli Sarona tower in April 2018 in order to expand operations.

Israel’s national airline, El Al, also saw an opportunity, forming a  strategic partnership  in February with the world’s largest aerospace company Boeing, through its investment arm Cockpit Innovation, to scour travel technologies for possible applications in the aviation and aerospace industries.

While travel tech startups are spread all over the country, the Eilat Hub says the city is essentially a “travel tech capital,” and an ideal environment for startups to test their products and technologies.

Eilat is Israel’s top travel destination, Haviv says. It is in close proximity to the upcoming Ramon International Airport, currently in its final stages of construction and set to open in 2019 about 10 km north of the city. It is set to handle domestic and international low-cost and charter flights from Europe. Eilat also has an international sea port, which hosts cruise ships, and has the largest number of hotel rooms within one city in the entire country. According to a Ministry of Tourism report in 2017, a record-breaking year for incoming tourism in the country, there were 50 hotels with 11,023 rooms operating in Eilat which is more rooms than Jerusalem (10,381 rooms), Tel Aviv-Jaffa (7,937 rooms.), the Dead Sea area (4,532 rooms), and the Sea of Galilee area (6,545 rooms).

“These numbers…[along with] a comprehensive tourist infrastructure on the private, municipal, and government level, and more, along with our fastest growing ecosystem, make Eilat a travel tech city,” Haviv says.

Boots on the ground

Haviv says the Eilat Hub, and its annual Travel Tech Boot Camp is the “perfect answer to Eilat’s travel and tourism infrastructure.”

Partnering with InnoVel, the business and innovation center connecting travel companies with cutting-edge startups, Eilat Hub held its five-day boot camp at the same time as the 3rd annual InnoVel Travel Tech conference which began on June 12 in Tel Aviv. The conference featured representatives from some of the world’s biggest tourism companies including Airbnb, Skyscanner, Expedia, HostelWorld.

Travel startups from seven countries applied to the Boot Camp, Haviv says, and five companies already in advanced stages made the final cut. The scale-up program was packed with business sessions and workshops led by 50 top tech, travel, financial, investment, hospitality and legal representatives from leading investment firms, hotel chains and tourist networks including Agoda, Skyscanner, Accor hotels, Booking.com, Arkia Airlines, InnoVel, Champion Capital, and Cockpit.

The five travel tech startups who participated in the boot camp pitched their startups on the program’s demo day on June 14. Judges included Rom Hendler and Chen Amishay, CEO and COO of InnoVel, Andy Morris, senior commercial manager of Skyscanner, Raphael Guillet, disruption technologist at AccorHotels, Timothy Hughes, vice president of corporate development at Agoda, Avishai Cohen, COO at Amadeus IT Group Israel, Eitan Spector, partner development manager ISV and startups at Microsoft Israel, Oz Eliav, director of corporate innovation at El Al’s Cockpit Innovation and Stephen Bookbinder, the managing director of Champion Capital Group, who was not able to make it to Eilat but made himself available remotely via Skype throughout the entire boot camp.

Products and services from the five startups ranged from hotel performance analytics to a new virtual assistant for travelers (think Siri on the streets.) Israel-based SeeVoov’s CEO Asaf Toker pitched a new way to plan trips based on videos that are tagged by the company’s intelligent machine learning system. Israeli-founded company Viggo hopes to deliver a hotel engagement platform through Smart TVs, wi-fi, and an app, according to General Manager Jonathan Casif. HotelsBI, with employees in Israel, Russia, Germany, and Belarus, provides aggregated analytics to hotels and ways to improve hotel performance. Israeli EasyWay founder and CEO Roy Friedman said he came up with the idea of Eve, a virtual assistant that can provide tailor-made recommendations for the ultimate travel experience, while traveling the world and coming up short when planning his own itinerary.

The winning startup was Slovenian firm Nexto, a location-based engagement and storytelling platform that enables content creators to use augmented reality to enhance guided tours at popular tourist and heritage destinations. In other words, the team turns “ audio guides into games to make sightseeing more interactive, .”

“Modern generations have higher expectations, both in terms of content quality and engagement,” Nexto co-founder and chief product officer Tadej Strok said during his pitch, “Our devices are now enabling much better location-based engagement possibilities and especially with what’s been happening with AR in the recent months, years. Our phones are becoming windows into different worlds. We believe we’re standing on the brink of a storytelling revolution.”

Nexto won a package of services worth more than NIS 100,000 ($27,600), which is provided by Google Launch Pad, Microsoft, law firm APM & Co., and VC firm Champion Capital Group. It was the company’s second win at a startup competition, nabbing first prize at the Booking.com Booster Lab in Barcelona.

Haviv explains that the Eilat Hub Boot Camp is the first step to a long-term tourism and technology development program called the Incubator, a one-year program for companies at a relatively advanced stage, that has a steady workflow, a finished product, has already raised capital, and is mostly ready to enter the market. The Incubator aims to connect large and diverse entities in the market, including investment funds, tech hubs, and international companies (think, El Al’s Cockpit venture arm or representatives from Microsoft) with tech startups. All the startups that participated in the Boot Camp can become part of the Incubator program.

“Eilat Hub supplies participating companies with a professional team that helps them break into the market and creates fertile ground for the startup as a well as an opportunity to position Eilat as the leading city in the field of travel tech at national and international levels,” the hub said in a statement.

Why should a startup come to Eilat?

When asked why the high-tech scene didn’t boom in Eilat as quickly as it did in other parts of Israel, Haviv is quick to answer.

“I think there is a reason that the people of Israel walked 40 years in the desert. I don’t think it’s because they didn’t have Waze. I think we weren’t ready for it,” he tells NoCamels, “You have to be ready in many ways. Infrastructure has to be ready. The people of Eilat have to be ready. The fact of the matter is if we were ready, it would have happened. The right things have to be aligned.”

Haviv says the excuses of the past — Eilat is too hot, Eilat is too far, Eilat has nothing for entrepreneurs — are no longer valid.

“People say it’s far from Tel Aviv. Well actually, no it’s not,” Haviv says, “For less than the price of gas, and definitely less time in traffic, you will get from Eilat to Tel Aviv in about 35-40 minutes – with check in, security, maybe an hour, hour and a half. You know what? It’s still less than traffic, it costs less than gas,” he explains.

According to Haviv, delegations made up of mentors, investors, and partners, arrive in Eilat every week. The boot camp alone generated over 50 flights, he says.

Haviv explains that there are three key reasons the travel tech industry is heating up in Eilat. The first is that the Eilat Hub offers startups a modern and pleasant coworking and meeting space alongside other startups who are building their product or service. The second is that the hub offers a number of tailor-made programs for startups of all levels, whether it’s just a small group with an idea, an early-stage startup, or a more advanced one, like Nexto.

According to Haviv, the Israeli Minister of Economy Eli Cohen has visited the Eilat Hub several times, and has been taken with the model. “The government of Israel and the municipality of Eilat are working very intensely right now to make Eilat one of the top five metropolises in Israel,” Haviv tells NoCamels.

Finally, perhaps the most important attraction, Haviv says, is the city’s natural assets. Already a top travel destination, Eilat is also a center of biotech innovation, with a number of world-class research institutes nearby, and is a leader in agriculture, water and energy tech thanks to its desert climate. Seventy percent of the city is already energy independent, Haviv says, noting that Eilat is set to be the first smart city to be energy-free by 2020 .

“[Whether] you’re a startup from Tel Aviv, or from Slovenia, startups will move globally, anywhere that will add serious value to them, Anywhere that would help them launch. Anywhere that will help them meet investors and clients and scale up. It doesn’t matter where it is on the globe, they will go there,” Haviv says, “Today was proof. Today you saw a company from Slovenia that applied, along with many others from different countries, to come to Eilat because of the boot camp, the partners of the program, the assets of this town.”

“These guys are leaving the boot camp with actual partnerships, with actual clients,” he says of the winners, adding that investment may also soon be in the cards.

In the Heart of Israel’s ‘Start-up Nation,’ an Exclusive Scene Opens Up

Tel Aviv’s flourishing tech sector is expanding and diversifying, offering travelers a surprising new lens on the city.

travel tech companies israel

By Sarah Amandolare

Tel Aviv is known for its thriving tech scene, drawing venture capitalists and start-up founders to events like Cyber Week , a cybersecurity conference, and Muni Expo , focused on tech for “smart cities.” A decade ago, the best-selling book “ Start-up Nation ” spotlighted Israel’s booming high-tech sector, and the industry is still going strong.

But the scene remains fairly exclusive, centered around Tel Aviv and employing mostly non-Orthodox Jewish men. Now, there are promising efforts underway to expand and diversify Israel’s tech sector — and to open it up to travelers.

Increasingly, there are opportunities for travelers to discover the city through its entrepreneurial side. A new museum, a start-up-inspired restaurant, boutique tours and myriad formal and informal events around Tel Aviv and beyond are some of the ways travelers can explore this evolving tech landscape.

Tel Aviv has tried tech-tourism before, offering tours of start-up offices and establishing a permanent exhibition on Israeli innovation in the Stock Exchange building, for example. But new opportunities encourage travelers to dig deeper into the roots of the industry, as well as reconsider its place in Israeli culture.

“Everyone knows that Israel is the Start-up Nation. Most people, both Israelis and internationals, don’t necessarily know why,” said Yarden Leal, deputy director general of The Peres Center for Peace & Innovation, home to The Israeli Innovation Center , which opened in February 2019.

Part museum, part homage to the former president Shimon Peres, the new Mediterranean-facing venue in the Jaffa neighborhood makes the idea of Start-up Nation “something tangible,” Ms. Leal said. An interactive hologram exhibition, for example, lets visitors converse with Israeli innovators, such as the USB flash drive inventor, Dov Moran, while another exhibition showcases Israeli products ranging from autonomous vehicles to a space telescope. And inside a virtual reality tunnel called the Capsule, travelers can get a feel for the future by trying to solve impending global challenges, like food shortages, with technological tools.

Ms. Leal hopes visitors leave with an understanding that “at the core of entrepreneurship is the belief that ‘I can make a difference.’” That idea is underscored in a documentary film about President Peres, an advocate for bottom-up change and cross-border knowledge-sharing, that is screened in a replica of his office. The Center has also hosted entrepreneurial workshops for ultra-Orthodox Jewish women, and teamed with the Danish Foreign Ministry and Palestinian partners for an ongoing incubator-accelerator for Palestinian companies in the West Bank. “President Peres always said, ‘Why don’t we make the start-up nation into the start-up region,’” Ms. Leal said.

Another organization spreading entrepreneurial energy beyond Tel Aviv is Start-Up Nation Central . Occupying a modern building on Lilienbaum Street, near tech-centric Rothschild Boulevard, the nonprofit connects young companies from throughout Israel with funding sources, and offers meeting spaces and professional workshops. In November 2018, the organization opened L28 , a start-up-inspired restaurant next to its offices. Every six months, a new chef-entrepreneur will occupy the light-filled eatery and experiment with Israeli cuisine. Druze Israeli chef Naifa Mulla is currently at the helm, creating contemporary spins on traditional Druze dishes, which blend Arab and Middle Eastern elements, such as seafood Shish Barak, a yogurt-based soup with drum fish dumplings — rather than the traditional beef or lamb — and crispy squid.

Additionally, the new venture ACT (Art, Culinary and Tech) aims to be an epicenter for Israel’s growing food-tech sector, offering guidance for start-ups and “a lab for chefs,” while hosting events ranging from pop-up dinners to talks on women in agriculture and food technology, according to co-founder Carmit Oron.

Such endeavors speak to the fact that more travelers are looking to experience how culture and tech collide in Israel, according to Tova Wald , a tour operator who creates customized itineraries for luxury corporate and leisure clients. In recent years, she said, both business travelers and tourists have requested that tech be somehow woven into their itineraries in Tel Aviv and beyond. “About half are coming to travel, but they’ve heard so much about the innovation and are curious to see it firsthand,” Ms. Wald said.

She has guided travelers through the hub of cybersecurity companies known as Cyber Spark , located about 70 miles from Tel Aviv in the Negev desert city of Beer Sheva, and on tours with Orthodox Jewish women entrepreneurs of the city of Bnei Brak, 30 minutes from Tel Aviv. But Ms. Wald’s itineraries might also explore innovations from thousands of years ago, such as Caesarea , an ancient city on the Mediterranean, and Masada, a fortress in the Judean Desert used against the Roman army in 73 A.D. “High tech is a great bridge between people and cultures and ideas,” Ms. Wald said.

That possibility fuels organizations working to expand Israel’s tech sector, such as The Hybrid , which helps Arab-led start-ups scale up, and WMN , an advocacy and mentoring organization for women entrepreneurs in Tel Aviv and the north of Israel. Tech has also taken hold in Jerusalem, and is growing in Nazareth as well as cities near Tel Aviv like Herzliya and Ra’anana-Kfar Saba.

And the entire industry has been throwing its doors open, according to Orlie Dahan, executive director of Tel Aviv-based EcoMotion , an organization trying to build Israel’s smart-transportation sector. While in the recent past, companies might have done everything in-house and under wraps, “the new world is all about consortiums; everyone bringing something to the table and together creating bigger, greater things,” Ms. Dahan said.

She encourages travelers to sign up for one of EcoMotion’s twice-a-year hackathons, where teams spend 36 hours trying to solve a mobility challenge presented by industry heavyweights, such as auto manufacturers, or France’s national rail operator S.N.C.F., which in the past has invited teams to personalize the travel-booking experience for riders.

“There’s room for all types of players,” Ms. Dahan said. “Even if you’re not a coder, you can be the one doing the presentation, managing the project or designing the mock-up to show how the app will look.”

If a hackathon sounds like too much, less formal tech events abound in the evenings throughout the year. Many opportunities can be found through Meetup.com, and offer travelers a peek behind the industry curtain. The soaring Azrieli Sarona Tower, where numerous tech companies have offices, hosts gatherings, as does Rise Tel Aviv , one of the British bank Barclays’ financial-tech work spaces, in the financial district.

“It’s very easy to get into the Israeli tech scene through Meetups and events,” said Erez Gavish of TLV Starters , which guides new entrepreneurs from early idea to up-and-running businesses from its office at Google Campus , the Israeli outpost of Google’s international chain of start-up hubs, another venue for tech events. The tight-knit culture means that one conversation can open the door to yet another gathering. Most evenings offer between five and 10 free event options, often within walking distance of each other and in English; Israeli start-ups generally need funding from outside Israel and create pitches in English from the get-go, according to Mr. Gavish.

As for the origins of Israeli innovation, he points to a combination of factors, from tech-savvy military alums to the desert environs that inspired the invention of drip-irrigation in the 1960s.

Given its vulnerable setting, Mr. Gavish said, Israel needs to cultivate an ethos very much aligned with tech: “create something.”

The Middle Eastern country is sometimes referred to as "Startup Nation" thanks to the sheer number of entrepreneurs building businesses there, particularly in cities like Tel Aviv.

Multinational tech companies like Google, Apple, Facebook, and Microsoft all have research centres in Israel but some of the local companies are arguably more interesting, with many of them specialising in drones, cybersecurity, and autonomous driving technology.

Take Mobileye, for example. The company's autonomous driving technology was so interesting that Intel paid a whopping $15.3 billion (£11.8 billion) for it in March  when it acquired the company.

The tech companies have been ranked based on interviews with multiple investors on the ground in Israel and what the firms have achieved over the last year.

25. Zebra — medical diagnostics company

travel tech companies israel

Founded in 2014 and backed by the likes of Salesforce billionaire Marc Benioff with $20 million (£16 million), this Tel Aviv-based company says it has taught an algorithm to identify early signs of breast cancer with the help of thousands of previous mammograms.

That constantly improving algorithm — trained using a technique known as machine learning, which is a type of AI that equips computers with the ability to learn without being explicitly programmed — is now better than radiologists using the best computer aided detection (CAD) methods for mammography, the company claims.

In December, the company launched a  service that allows people to upload their medical imaging scans such as CTs and mammograms to Zebra's platform, and receive an automated analysis for key clinical conditions.

24. Mobli — social media firm

travel tech companies israel

Mobli is a social media company headed by serial entrepreneur and investor Moshe Hogeg. The startup, which downsized considerably last year , sold a geofilter patent to Snap for $7.7 million (£5.9 million) in March, according to TechCrunch .

Hogeg also has a mobile phone company called Sirin, which has raised $97 million (£77 million) to build a new $16,000 (£12,400) smartphone called Solarin. The phone launched at a party in London last year that was attended by the likes of Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy but the company laid off a third of its staff in March , suggesting sales have been poor.

Before becoming an entrepreneur, Hogeg, was an officer and company commander in the Israeli Defense Force where he led 150 soldiers in an "elite unit." He's also the entrepreneur behind the Yo! app. Its sole function was to send the user's friends the word "Yo" as a text and audio notification.

23. OurCrowd — crowdfunding platform

travel tech companies israel

Founded by Jon Medved, OurCrowd is an equity crowdfunding platform that allows accredited investors to invest in pre-vetted startups alongside trusted venture capital investors and angel investors.

The OurCrowd community has invested over $440 million (£339 million) into a range of companies, with $80 million (£62 million) going to startups operating in the healthcare sector.

"We believe we have a responsibility, a mission, to enable every single human being to be able to document his or her life story and safeguard it for generations to come," Golan Levi, a user experience expert at MyHeritage, told news site Israeli21C  in January.

Last year, MyHeritage launched MyHeritage DNA, which offers cheap DNA tests that reveal users' ethnic origins and previously unknown relatives.

travel tech companies israel

Founded in 2013 by a team of security enthusiasts, Argus develops technology for vehicles that can prevent them from being hacked.

The company has reverse-engineered the cortex in our brains to enable what it claims is a new generation of biologically inspired computational technologies. Today the company's technology can identify what's in photos. It can index and tag images in real time, enabling users, advertisers, and publishers to understand them better.

"Most of the time users want to engage with their photos," said Cortica CEO and cofounder Igal Raichelgauz on a call with Business Insider. "The big challenge of AI here is to show them the photos that will surprise and delight."

StoreDot has caught the eye of Korean electronics giant Samsung, which has helped the company to raise $66 million (£51 million).

China launches investigation in response to EU probes of solar, wind power and other products

China’s Commerce Ministry has announced it will launch an investigation into whether unfair trade practices were adopted by the European Union in its probe of Chinese companies. BEIJING (AP) — China announced an investigation Wednesday into whether the European Union has adopted unfair trade practices in its probes of Chinese companies bidding on projects in the 27-nation bloc. The move is the latest in a brewing trade war between the two economic giants.

The investigation will focus on wind power, photovoltaics, security equipment and electric trains, the Chinese Commerce Ministry said.

The EU has used a new regulation to investigate companies bidding for projects within the European Union. These include a probe into whether Chinese subsidies give wind turbine companies an unfair advantage in the competition for projects in Spain, Greece, France, Romania and Bulgaria.

China accused the European Union of protectionism and “reckless distortion” of the definition of subsidies in response to that investigation. The EU has also investigated Chinese companies bidding for a 455-megawatt solar park in Romania and for the procurement of 20 electric trains in Bulgaria.

The Chinese investigation will be completed before Jan. 10, with a possible extension of three months to April. It was requested by China’s Chamber of Commerce for Import and Export of Machinery and Electronic Products.

The EU imposed provisional tariffs on China-made electric vehicles last week over subsidies that it alleges gives an unfair advantage to automakers exporting from China. In response, China has launched an investigation into European pork exports.

Both the EU and the United States are worried that inexpensive Chinese automobiles could overwhelm their domestic producers and lead to factory layoffs. Chinese auto exports have risen about 30% in the first six months of this year.

American citizen working for drone company injured in Israel

By Kathryn Watson

Updated on: July 8, 2024 / 1:17 PM EDT / CBS News

A U.S. citizen who was a representative of a drone company doing business with the Israelis has been wounded in Israel, after the Hamas-aligned militant group Hezbollah fired missiles toward Israel, U.S. officials tell CBS News national security correspondent David Martin.

A spokesperson for the U.S. State Department confirmed that an American civilian was injured, but didn't offer further details. The U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem is assisting the injured American and the citizen's family, the spokesperson said. The U.S. government has repeatedly urged Americans to stay away from the region because of the ongoing Israel-Hamas war .

"The department reminds U.S. citizens of the continued need for caution and increased personal security awareness throughout Israel and the West Bank, as security incidents often take place without warning," the State Department spokesperson also said.

Fears about the possibility of war between Israel and Lebanon's Hezbollah have grown after an Israeli airstrike killed a senior Hezbollah commander last Wednesday. Israel said the commander, Mohammad Naameh Nasser, was responsible for firing rockets into Israel. Hezbollah responded with another barrage of rocket fire. Like Hamas, Hezbollah is backed by Iran but is believed to be larger and better armed.

Politics latest: 'Emergency' prisons plan revealed - as government urged to decriminalise drug possession

The new government is expanding the early release scheme to ease pressure on prisons amid a lack of spaces - amid calls to go further and decriminalise drug posession.

We are signing off now after a big week in Westminster that saw Labour making its first moves as the new government, and the Conservatives trying to work out what their future in opposition looks like.

But don't worry, we will be back on Sunday morning to cover all the political news from the weekend and bring you the latest with Trevor Phillips.

See you then!

Friday marks the end of the first full week for hundreds of new MPs who came to Westminster after the general election.

But for some of the newbies, there was an even bigger task coming their way - being promoted to ministers.

Our political reporter Alix Culbertson takes at look at the new Labour politicians who have already found themselves on Sir Keir Starmer's frontbench.

Jess Phillips says there are "still things that I worry about" after the government confirmed it would be letting prisoners out of jail early to help with overcrowding.

The Labour MP and now minister in the Home Office tells Sky News' Electoral Dysfunction podcast that "by no means is any of this perfect" and the situation was a "terrible, terrible thing".

She adds: "It's still not something that you would ever want to be doing. And there are still things that I worry about."

But Ms Phillips defends the decision too, especially around the exclusion of domestic abusers and stalkers from the policy, saying it is "a shift from what it was... when the Tories were doing it".

She says: "You do what you can in the initial hours that you have to do it, and that isn't the end.

"We will now work on exactly how to make sure that as many possible safeguards can be put in place for potential victims whose perpetrators are being released."

The full episode of Electoral Dysfunction will be released here later this evening, so keep an eye on your feeds.

The victims' commissioner for England and Wales has welcomed the government's decision to exclude domestic abusers and stalkers from its new early release scheme for prisoners.

Baroness Newlove called the move a "welcome and necessary step, reflecting the concerns raised by victims and those who advocate for them".

In a statement, she said there needs to be "clear communication with victims" during the process to ensure the government has their trust, including informing them if release dates are brought forward and allowing them to request protection measures.

She demanded the probation service is "properly resourced to effectively manage licensing conditions and exclusion zones, which are vital for public safety and victim reassurance".

Baroness Newlove added: "Public safety must remain the top priority as these changes are implemented.

"We must acknowledge these exclusions have limitations and cannot address every potential risk."

The chief inspector of prisons is warning the move by the government to tackle overcrowding in jails will "inevitably lead to the early release of some risky offenders".

In a statement, Charlie Taylor welcomed the decision by Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood to release prisoners who had completed 40% of their sentences to free up space, saying the "recognition of the seriousness of the situation, and swift action to manage the prison populations to relieve the immediate strain many jails are under" was positive.

However, he added: "This latest measure will inevitably lead to the early release of some risky offenders, and will add to the workload of already stretched prison OMUs (offender management units) and probation services.

"How these men are prepared for release and how prisons and probation are supported in managing them will be vital."

Mr Taylor said his organisation will be "watching this very closely - as well as any plans that are developed once the immediate pressure is relieved that seek to make prisons places of genuine purpose, help people to break the cycle of reoffending and protect the public from future harm".

Former home secretary and likely Conservative leadership contender Suella Braverman has blasted the government in a somewhat odd way - namely for "picking up Tory ideas".

As we have just reported, Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood has announced plans to release prisoners who have served 40% of their sentences to help alleviate overcrowding in jails, subject to some exemptions.

A similar plan was said to have been proposed by the now former justice secretary Alex Chalk last year, but was understood to have been blocked by Number 10 over fears of a backbench rebellion from Tory MPs.

Tweeting after the government announcement was made, Ms Braverman said: "I opposed this, both inside & outside government.

"With 40 MPs, I tabled amendments to the Sentencing Bill to stop the early release of criminals and put public safety first.

"We managed to stop the government doing it."

She added: "Labour is picking up Tory ideas and putting the public at risk."

Ms Braverman also claimed "everyone and his mother should run to be leader" of her party when the contest kicks off.

But she said all contenders have "got to start taking responsibility for what we did, and for the things we shamefully left undone - such as not building enough prisons".

The justice secretary has announced that the government will conduct a review into how the "crisis" in prisons was "allowed to happen".

Shabana Mahmood explained: "It will look at how and why necessary decisions were not taken at critical moments. And the lessons that must be learned by future governments, from the failures of the last."

She added: "The legacy of those who last occupied 10 Downing Street is prisons in crisis, moments from catastrophic disaster.

"Our legacy will be different.

"A prisons system brought under control. A probation service that keeps the public safe. Enough prison places to meet our needs. And prisons that break the cycle of reoffending - and create better citizens, not better criminals."

The justice secretary has set out what would happen if the government does not implement these "emergency measures" to reduce the prison population.

Shabana Mahmood said: "Soon, the courts would grind to a halt, unable to hold trials.

"The police would have to stop carrying out arrests. With officers unable to act, criminals could do whatever they want, without consequence.

"We could see looters running amok, smashing in windows, robbing shops and setting neighbourhoods alight.

"In short, if we fail to act now, we face the collapse of the criminal justice system. And a total breakdown of law and order."

She declared this "the legacy of the last Conservative government" and the consequences of their "failure" to address the issue.

The new justice secretary has placed the blame for the "crisis" in prisons firmly at the door of the previous government.

Shabana Mahmood said of the Conservative Party: "Time and again, they ducked the difficult decisions that could have addressed this challenge.

"Instead, they kept the public in the dark about the state they had left this country in. They were too weak to heed the warning signs that were flashing. They chose instead to put the country at risk."

There have been reports that her predecessor, Alex Chalk, tried to implement the emergency measures she is announcing today in order to ease the crisis, but former PM Rishi Sunak blocked it.

"But, instead of taking responsibility, she said, "Rishi Sunak called an election. He tried to hoodwink the electorate. And he was punished at the ballot box."

Echoing language used to describe the people who appeased the Nazis in the 1930s, Ms Mahmood said: "Those responsible – Sunak and his gang in No 10 – should go down in history as the guilty men.

"The guilty men who put their political careers ahead of the safety and security of our country. It was the most disgraceful dereliction of duty I have ever known."

By Mollie Malone, news correspondent

These measures from the justice secretary will be seen among the prison and probation sector as a proper attempt to reset and alleviate the immediate prisons crisis (see previous post).

But it doesn’t solve everything. Far from it.

The justice secretary admits today that the core announcement to lower the automatic release point from 50% to 40% is in itself an emergency measure.

At the moment, we are lurching from one emergency measure to the next.

There are safeguards in place that didn't exist under the previous controversial scheme launched by the Conservative government in October - allowing eligible offenders to be released up to 70 days before the end of their sentence.

Those safeguards might help offset some fears expressed by victims groups.

But it certainly doesn't offer a long term solution.

"Although it will be a law, it still does not resolve how we use prison in the long term," said one prison source.

"If we carry on with court backlogs and send more people to prison, we will be in the same position all over again," they said.

The government are committing to building more prison places.

But their prisons minister James Timpson fundamentally disagrees with that approach and thinks a third of people that are in prison shouldn't be there

There are lots of questions yet to answer about what meaningful reform looks like.
