Advantages of BA Multi City and Avios Multi City Redemptions

March 3, 2020 By Ben @ Thrifty Points 1 Comment

BA Multi City Using Avios

Combining two main ‘passions’ in my life – travelling and hunting out a bargain – have taken me to the four corners of the earth.  Today I’ll be looking at how to make the most of the various BA Multi City tools to redeem an Avios around-the-world ticket.

Unfortunately booking an Avios multi city trip isn’t quite as easy as it should be, however by the end of this article I hope to both equip you with the information you need and enable you to use some of those hard-earned Avios points.

There are two ways in which you can book an Avios redemption to a number of different cities.

The first would be to book various one-way flights between each of your destinations.  This can have three main benefits as I’ve recently written in this article and summarised below:

  • If you’re booked onto an Avios BA multi city flight and miss one of your flights the remaining flights could be voided – a massive risk in my eyes!
  • Secondly, you can only make changes to the flights up until 24 hours before the outbound flight. If your plans change halfway through your journey then there’s no way of changing the remaining flights.
  • Finally, in some cases the taxes can actually be cheaper if booked as one-way redemptions.

The second option of booking an Avios multi city flight is directly through the British Airways Executive Club.  Frustratingly there’s no option to do this online so you’ll have to call BA to book a multi-destination redemption.  Unfortunately booking via the phone comes with a £15 fee unless you’re a Gold member (in which case this fee is waived).  BA usually waive the fee for open-jaw BA 2-4-1 redemptions as it’s not possible to book these through the website, however I’ve never heard of the fee being waived for multi city Avios redemptions I’m afraid!

BA Multi City

Now if you’re planning an Avios around-the-world ticket, then there’s one more thing you should know.  In some instances it’s possible to save a significant number of Avios points by choosing to redeem your Avios by flying with 2 or more BA partner (oneworld) airlines.  In this instance you’ll benefit from the reduced multi-flight rewards chart which can be found on the BA website here .  Read on for worked examples which show just how many Avios you could save as well as how many Avios you’ll need to fly around the world!

We’ll start off by looking at a BA multi city redemption using the multi-carrier benefit and then compare against various one-way tickets.

Avios Multi City

Example Using Multi Carrier Avios Reward Flights

As British Airways doesn’t offer a multi-segment redemption finder, you’re going to have to plan your Avios around-the-world ticket by yourself but don’t worry we’re here to help!  First things first, let’s study the Avios multi-carrier reward flight chart.

Avios around the world ticket

The above chart is based on an economy redemption.  If you’d like to redeem in a different class, just times by 1.5 for premium economy, times by 2 for business class and finally times by 3 for first class…

Now let’s take a look at the rules for a multi-carrier redemption:

  • You must fly on at least two oneworld carriers
  • Strangely you cannot redeem on a BA flight!
  • You can take up to a maximum of 8 flight segments
  • 1 open-jaw flight allowed (i.e. land in one city and take off from another)

Whilst this redemption option can offer significantly discounted fares it does prevent you flying on a British Airways plane.  Let’s face it though if you’re flying around the world even on a cash ticket the only time you’d be able to fly on BA would be your first and last flights (unless you’re on a fifth freedom flight ).  In my eyes this isn’t a big deal and actually some of the oneworld partners offer significantly superior seat products.

To plan your trip we’d suggest using the oneworld map found here .

To initially search for availability we’d suggest using the American Airlines website which has a far better calendar to assist with finding reward flights.  You can then plug the dates into the BA Book Avios page ( found here ) to book the flight.  Note that the taxes and air miles will be different between the two platforms.  If you hold your points as American Express Rewards points earned with the likes of the Amex Gold card (for which both BA and AA are transfer partners) you may want to think about transferring the points to the cheapest/lowest Avios option (assuming you’re booking various one-way flights).

An example of the American Airlines search page for an economy flight between Sydney and Tokyo is shown below.  Note only MileSAAver flights can be booked using Avios.

british airways multi city

Once you’ve pieced together your preferred trip and made sure there is reward availability, you’ll want to find out the combined distance in miles of the flight to work out just how many Avios the flight will set you back.  I’d recommend using Great Circle Mapper ( found here ) to help measure the distance, plus it will give you a nifty map of all your flights – not sure why you’d want this unless you plan on inserting it into an article like me :).

To make life easier we’ve planned a route below with a couple of comments as to why we’ve chosen certain routes or flights.  As I’m based in London we’ll start here!

(For those viewing on a mobile, you’ll need to turn your phone on its side otherwise you’ll be unable to view the table).

how many avios to fly around the world

If you were to book this BA multi city flight as various one-way tickets the all-in number of points would be 163,000 as well as £390.80 in taxes.  You should note that taxes for a direct flight from London to Philadelphia would usually set you back £251.32, so this route represents reasonable value for the 29,404 miles flown!

To work out whether a multi-carrier reward flight would provide good value, we need to deduct the first and last positioning flights from the total number of Avios and miles flown.  This would result in 28,408 miles flown and 152,500 Avios required if booked as separate one-way tickets.  Using the multi-flight reward table, found here , we can see that for a flight totalling between 25,000 – 35,000 miles flown, the total number of Avios required would be 140,000.  This compares to the 152,500 Avios points required if the 8 segments were booked on a one-way basis and as such provides a saving of 12,500 Avios.

With the various risks of not being able to amend flights once you’ve taken the first flight or alternatively having the remaining flights cancelled should you miss a flight, the points difference between the two won’t be enough for me to book the multi-carrier BA multi city flight over individual one-way tickets…

BA Multi City – So How Many Avios to Fly Around the World?

As we’ve seen above, you can use 140,000 points and £390 in taxes to redeem an Avios around-the-world ticket with a total of 9 stops!  However if you want the security of being able to change or cancel your flights once you’ve commenced your journey then you may want to think twice unless of course there’s a significant Avios saving!

british airways multi city flights

The Positives and Negatives – Multi Carrier Mileage Chart

So what are the positives of using the multi-carrier mileage chart when booking an Avios multi city holiday?  Well in the instance above we saved only 12,500 Avios, however the savings can be significantly more on certain routes.  We deliberately picked what we believed would be a worst-case scenario (i.e. a low number of Avios required for the distance flown) so when you’re booking yours there should be a greater saving than our example.

There are however a couple of negatives.  The first is that you cannot unfortunately fly on British Airways.  The second is the risk of having the remaining flights cancelled if you miss one of the 8 segments.  The final issue is that once you’ve taken your first flight you’re unable to change any of the remaining flights…

Simple Flying

How do multi-city flights work.

Multi-city flights can help save time and money.

  • Multi-city flights combine multiple destinations into one reservation, saving money and time.
  • Multi-city bookings are ideal for domestic and international travel and have many advantages compared to multiple one-way or roundtrip tickets.
  • Advantages include cost savings, time efficiency, and opportunities to explore new cultures on a long trip.

Whether you are traveling for work or leisure, and you need to visit or explore several cities during your trip, there are various ways to help you save time and money and ensure you enjoy seamless movement between your destinations. One of the best ways is to book multi-city flights , which, fortunately, are offered by several airlines worldwide.

What are multi-city flights and how do they work?

When booking flights for business or a family vacation, travelers usually come across the two main options first seen on booking sites: one-way and roundtrip . Depending on your plans, these allow you to fly to your destination only (one-way) or back to your origin (roundtrip). If you need to visit multiple destinations during your trip, it is possible to book multiple one-way or return tickets, but this can be costly and inconvenient .

This is where multi-city flights come in. This is a flight itinerary that includes two or more destinations. By selecting "multi-city" on a flight booking site, you can book a round trip for different routes in each direction. For example, a multi-city booking would be ideal if you want to travel from Boston to Miami, then from Miami to Atlanta, and back to Boston.

Multi-city flights work by combining all flights into one reservation, often saving you money and time of booking multiple one-way tickets. They are not only limited to domestic flights, so they can be booked when traveling between different countries or continents.

The Evolution Of Ultra-Long Haul Flight

How to book multi-city flights, planning your trip.

Multi-city flights can be booked directly on an airline's website or through third-party sites by simply selecting "multi-city" on the menu. However, some airlines do not display it together with the one-way and roundtrip options, so you may need to scroll down or type something like "British Airways multi-city flights" in your search engine.

This type of itinerary is ideal for most international routes, but some are better than others. You can select your preferred destination and dates and see what works best for you. Knowing an airline's hub can also help you plan your trip, as you can better understand the connection points. For example, British Airways has its hub at London Heathrow Airport (LHR) , while Emirates has Dubai International Airport (DXB) .

Some airlines limit multi-city flights to three destinations, while others allow you to add more. There are also different terms for multi-city bookings depending on which airline you are flying with. Finnair notes that:

  • You must be returning from the same continent you flew to and to the same continent you departed from. So, if you traveled to Europe from North America, you must return to your origin from Europe and not any other continent.
  • Your flight in one direction must be longer (in miles) than the distance between any cities you travel between using other modes of transport like a bus or train.

Advantages of multi-city bookings

By now, you've probably realized some of the benefits of booking multi-city flights. While it might take some time and planning to get the best out of your multi-city booking, the advantages might be worth it. These include:

  • Cost savings: Booking multi-city flights instead of two one-ways or roundtrips can cost much less . You can also avoid being hit by sudden price fluctuations as ticket prices change depending on the travel season.
  • Saving time: By combining all flights into one reservation, you will spend less time booking flights and enjoy more time exploring your destinations.
  • Breaking down trips: When traveling long-haul, instead of flying non-stop for over 10 hours, you can stop in another city and experience a new culture or try new food.

Did You Know That Etihad Allows Connecting Passengers To Book Multi-Night Stopovers In Abu Dhabi?

What about open-jaw flights.

Another way of planning your flight itinerary is through open jaw flights . These are similar to multi-city flights and can be booked using the same option on an airline's website. However, the difference is that open-jaw flights skip one of the flights in the middle of your trip, whereby you use another mode of transport or book a flight on a separate reservation.

An open-jaw flight is basically an airline return ticket where your origin and/or destination cities are different in both directions. For example, you fly from New York to London but return to New York from Paris, or you fly from New York to London and return from London to Miami. The name is derived from how the routes are illustrated on a map, as shown above.

You can access Manage My Booking to view any flights on your booking, provided there is at least one flight with a British Airways flight number. Seat and meal request services, the Advance Passenger Information service, Online Check-in, if available, can only be used on flights with a British Airways flight number.

If you have booked through a travel agent and your booking contains at least one flight with a British Airways flight number, then simply use your travel agent's booking reference to access the Manage My Booking service. There are two key service limitations, which may apply to a travel agent booking:

  • You may not be able to view all of your flights in Manage My Booking. If this is the case, then this is because British Airways does not own the booking and is normally allowed to view it's own flights plus with preceding and succeeding connecting flights (regardless of airline).
  • Changes made through Manage My Booking to British Airways flights will normally not be passed back to your travel agent booking.

You will be unable to access Manage My Booking for any bookings that:

Special meal requests cannot be made for travel on any UK Domestic flight. Special meals requests cannot be made on some Euro Traveller flights.

Check where you can request a special meal

If you are travelling on a standby or waitlist ticket you will be unable to request special meals on any route.

Kosher meal requests are not available on all services. Please check here to see where kosher meals are available . Special meal requests are unavailable on all other routes if your flight is due to depart within 24 hours.

Please note: Special meal requests on British Airways flights operated by our partner airlines may differ from above. Flights operated to/from London City airport have complimentary catering.

We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.

From selected locations, customers using Online Check-in can print their own boarding pass at home or in the office and go straight to the central search security area on arrival. This then saves the customer visiting a Self-Service Check-in kiosk at the airport to collect their boarding pass. The Online boarding pass needs to be printed on plain white A4 or letter paper and includes a unique 2D barcode, which will be scanned by airport security staff and checked off against information already in the system. When travelling from the UK, customers will need to provide photographic ID in the form of a passport, identity card or driving licence, along with their Online boarding pass, before they will be allowed to pass through security. At all other airport locations, the passport/identity card check will be carried out before boarding the aircraft. The technology that is being used, along with the requirement for an approved type of photographic ID, means that customers can be reassured that security is in no way being compromised. What is a British Airways Stopover?

A British Airways stopover is a fantastic travel option that allows you to take a break in a layover city for a few days or more when flying with British Airways. Instead of simply using the city as a transit point, you have the opportunity to explore and immerse yourself in the culture, attractions, and cuisine of that destination. It’s like adding an extra mini-vacation to your main trip at no additional airfare!

With a British Airways stopover, you can choose from a variety of enticing destinations around the world. Whether you’re traveling from one continent to another or just within Europe, there are numerous cities available for your stopover. From iconic cities like New York, Dubai, and Tokyo to cultural gems like Rome, Barcelona, and Istanbul, the options are endless.

One of the wonderful aspects of a British Airways stopover is the flexibility it offers. You can decide how long you want to spend in the layover city, whether it’s just a quick overnight stay or a few days of exploration. This gives you the freedom to customize your travel experience and make the most of your trip.

Not only does a British Airways stopover allow you to discover new destinations, but it also enhances your overall travel experience. Long-haul flights can be exhausting, and having the opportunity to break up your journey and enjoy a refreshing break can make a world of difference. It’s a chance to relax, rejuvenate, and add an exciting element to your trip.

In addition to the convenience and flexibility, British Airways stopovers offer another significant advantage – the chance to save money. By booking a stopover, you can often find more affordable airfare options compared to booking separate flights to each destination. This means you can explore multiple cities without breaking the bank.

So, whether you’re a frequent flyer looking to make the most of your layovers or a traveler seeking to experience more on a single trip, a British Airways stopover is the perfect solution. It adds a touch of adventure to your journey, opens up new possibilities for exploration, and allows you to create unforgettable memories along the way.

Benefits of Booking a British Airways Stopover

Booking a British Airways stopover comes with a host of benefits that can greatly enhance your travel experience. Let’s take a closer look at some of the advantages you can enjoy when you choose to incorporate a stopover into your journey.

  • Explore Multiple Destinations: One of the biggest advantages of a British Airways stopover is the opportunity to see and experience multiple destinations on a single trip. Instead of flying directly to your final destination, you can break up your journey and spend a few days in a layover city. This allows you to immerse yourself in different cultures, explore new attractions, and have unique experiences that you wouldn’t otherwise have on a traditional flight.
  • Flexibility and Customization: A British Airways stopover offers the flexibility to tailor your trip according to your preferences. You can choose the duration of your stopover, whether it’s a short overnight stay or several days of exploration. This flexibility allows you to create a travel itinerary that suits your needs and allows for maximum enjoyment of each destination.
  • Save Money: Booking a stopover with British Airways can often lead to cost savings. Instead of purchasing separate flights to each city, you can take advantage of stopover pricing, which may offer a more affordable option. This means you can stretch your travel budget further and potentially visit more destinations without breaking the bank.
  • Break up Long Flights: Long-haul flights can be tiring and exhausting, especially when traveling to far-off destinations. A British Airways stopover provides a much-needed break in your journey. By breaking up long flights, you can give yourself time to rest, rejuvenate, and adapt to a new time zone. This can help reduce jet lag and make your overall travel experience more comfortable and enjoyable.
  • Discover Hidden Gems: When you include a stopover in your itinerary, you have the opportunity to discover hidden gems and lesser-known destinations. Often, layover cities are overlooked by many travelers, but they hold their own unique charm and attractions. By exploring these off-the-beaten-path locations, you can uncover hidden treasures, experience local culture, and create memorable travel moments.

These are just a few of the benefits you can enjoy when booking a British Airways stopover. Whether you’re seeking to explore new destinations, save money, or add a touch of adventure to your journey, a British Airways stopover is a fantastic option that allows you to make the most of your travel experience.

How to Plan for a British Airways Stopover

Planning for a British Airways stopover involves a few key steps to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience. Let’s take a look at how you can effectively plan and prepare for your stopover.

  • Research Your Preferred Stopover Destination: The first step is to decide on the city where you want to have your stopover. Consider your interests, the attractions you want to visit, and the experiences you want to have. Research the culture, weather, and any visa requirements for the destination. Look for popular tourist spots as well as off-the-beaten-path gems to create an itinerary that suits your preferences.
  • Check Your Eligibility for a Stopover: Ensure that your itinerary, fare type, and ticket allow for a stopover. Not all flight tickets permit a stopover, so it’s important to check the terms and conditions. Make sure you comply with any specific requirements set by British Airways for stopover eligibility.
  • Find Available Flights and Stopover Options: Once you have decided on the destination and checked your eligibility, it’s time to find the available flights and stopover options. Use the British Airways website or consult a travel agent to explore the flights that fit your travel dates and desired stopover duration. Take note of the layover cities and the duration of each layover to ensure you have enough time to explore.
  • Make a Booking with British Airways: After selecting your desired flights and stopover options, it’s time to make a booking with British Airways. Follow the booking process outlined on the website or consult a travel agent to ensure that you secure your desired itinerary. Double-check all the details, including travel dates, stopover duration, and any additional services or upgrades you may require.
  • Prepare for Your Stopover: Once your stopover is confirmed, it’s time to prepare for your journey. Research the local customs, language, and currency of your stopover destination. Make sure you have the necessary travel documents, including passports, visas, and any required vaccinations. Create a packing list based on the activities and weather at your stopover location.

By following these steps, you can effectively plan for a British Airways stopover and ensure that you make the most of your layover city. With proper research, preparation, and booking, your stopover experience will be seamless, enjoyable, and filled with wonderful memories.

Step 1: Research Your Preferred Stopover Destination

The first step in planning a British Airways stopover is to research and choose your preferred stopover destination. This is an exciting opportunity to explore a new city or revisit a favorite destination. Here are some important points to consider during your research:

  • Interests and Preferences: Think about your interests and what you would like to experience during your stopover. Are you interested in history, culture, shopping, or outdoor activities? Consider what attractions and activities align with your preferences.
  • Attractions and Landmarks: Research the top attractions and landmarks in your potential stopover cities. Look for iconic sites, museums, parks, and other must-visit locations. Make a list of the places you’d love to explore and prioritize them based on your interests.
  • Local Culture: Delve into the local culture of each stopover destination. Learn about the customs, traditions, festivals, and cuisine to get a taste of what the city has to offer. Consider if there are any unique cultural experiences or events happening during your visit.
  • Weather and Season: Check the weather patterns and seasons of the cities you are considering for your stopover. This will help you pack appropriate clothing and plan outdoor activities accordingly. Consider if you prefer mild temperatures, vibrant festivals, or cozy winter experiences.
  • Destination Safety: Ensure that the stopover destinations you research are safe for travelers. Check travel advisories and read reviews from other travelers to gauge the safety and security of the cities. Your safety should always be a top priority.
  • Visa Requirements: Investigate if you need a visa for the country of your stopover destination. Check the visa requirements and application process well in advance to avoid any last-minute hassles or complications. Make sure you have enough time to obtain the necessary documents if required.
  • Flight Availability: Consider the flight availability and frequency of flights to your preferred stopover cities. Make sure there are suitable options that align with your travel dates and preferred stopover duration. Take note of the layover duration and ensure you have enough time to explore the city comfortably.

By conducting thorough research on your preferred stopover destination, you will be well-equipped to make an informed decision. This will ensure that you choose a city that aligns with your interests, offers exciting attractions, and provides a memorable experience during your British Airways stopover.

Step 2: Check Your Eligibility for a Stopover

Before diving into the planning process for your British Airways stopover, it’s important to check your eligibility. Not all flights and tickets allow for a stopover, so it’s essential to ensure that your itinerary meets the necessary requirements. Here’s what you need to consider:

  • Flight Ticket Type: Check the terms and conditions of your flight ticket to determine if stopovers are permitted. Different fare types may have varying rules and restrictions regarding stopovers. Make sure the ticket you have purchased or plan to purchase allows for stopovers.
  • Stopover Duration: Verify if your desired stopover duration aligns with the rules set by British Airways. Some fare types may have specific limitations on the length of stopovers. Ensure that your preferred stopover duration falls within the allowed time frame to avoid any issues or additional charges.
  • Destination Restrictions: Take note of any destination restrictions that may apply to your stopover. Certain countries may have specific entry requirements, such as visas or transit visas, depending on your nationality. Ensure that you meet the necessary criteria to enter and exit the stopover destination smoothly.
  • Route and Layover Cities: Double-check the route and layover cities of your British Airways flight. Make sure that the itinerary includes a layover in your desired stopover city. Verify the duration of the layover and ensure it allows for enough time to explore and enjoy the city.
  • Booking Flexibility: Consider if your booking allows for changes or modifications. Sometimes, unforeseen circumstances may arise, and you may need to adjust your travel plans. Having some flexibility in your booking can make the process easier if you need to make any changes to your stopover arrangements.

By checking your eligibility for a stopover before proceeding with the planning process, you can ensure that your itinerary aligns with the guidelines set by British Airways. This will save you from potential complications or disappointments and allow you to move forward confidently with your stopover plans.

Step 3: Find Available Flights and Stopover Options

Once you have determined your eligibility for a British Airways stopover, the next step is to find the available flights and stopover options that suit your travel preferences. Here’s how you can go about finding the best options:

  • Use the British Airways Website: Start by visiting the British Airways website and navigating to the “Book” or “Plan and book” section. Enter your travel details, including origin, destination, and travel dates, and select the option for a stopover if available. The website will provide you with a list of flights that include a layover in your chosen stopover city.
  • Consult a Travel Agent: If you prefer personalized assistance or have specific requirements, consider reaching out to a travel agent specializing in British Airways flights. They can help you find the best flight options, provide advice on stopover destinations, and assist with any additional requests or arrangements you may have.
  • Compare Layover Cities: Explore the different layover cities available for your chosen route. Consider factors such as the duration of the layover, airport facilities, and proximity to the city center. Compare the attractions, cultural experiences, and amenities offered by each city to choose the one that aligns with your interests and preferences.
  • Check Stopover Duration: Pay attention to the duration of the layover in each city. Ensure that the stopover duration allows for enough time to explore and enjoy the destination. Consider whether you prefer a shorter layover to maximize your time at the final destination or a longer layover to explore the stopover city in more depth.
  • Consider Hotel and Transportation Options: Research the availability of hotels and transportation options in each stopover city. Check the proximity of hotels to the airport or city center and consider factors such as affordability, amenities, and accessibility. Look into public transportation or private car services to navigate the city during your stopover.

By conducting a thorough search for available flights and stopover options, you can find an itinerary that aligns with your travel preferences and allows for an enjoyable stopover experience. Take your time to compare the different options and choose the one that best suits your needs and desires.

Step 4: Make a Booking with British Airways

After finalizing your preferred flight and stopover options, it’s time to make a booking with British Airways. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to secure your desired itinerary:

  • Visit the British Airways Website: Go to the British Airways website and navigate to the booking section. Enter your travel details, including departure and arrival airports, travel dates, and the number of passengers. Make sure to select the option for a stopover and enter the specific stopover city you have chosen.
  • Choose Your Flights: Explore the available flight options that include a layover in your stopover city. Compare the prices, departure times, and other factors that are important to you. Select the flights that align with your preferences and fit your travel schedule.
  • Enter Passenger Information: Provide the necessary passenger information for each traveler, including names, contact details, and any special requests or requirements. Ensure that all information is accurate and matches the travel documents of each passenger.
  • Select Additional Services: If you require any additional services such as extra baggage, seat selection, or in-flight meals, choose them during the booking process. British Airways offers various options to enhance your travel experience, so take advantage of any services that align with your needs.
  • Review and Confirm: Take a moment to review all the details of your booking, including flight dates, stopover duration, passenger information, and any additional services selected. Double-check for any errors or discrepancies before proceeding to payment.
  • Make Payment: Choose your preferred payment method and proceed to make the payment for your booking. Ensure that you provide accurate billing details and complete the transaction securely. Be aware of any applicable fees or taxes that may be included in the final price.
  • Receive Confirmation: Once the payment is successfully processed, you will receive a confirmation email with all the details of your booking. Keep this confirmation for your records and reference. It’s also a good idea to save a digital or printed copy of the confirmation for easy access during your journey.

By following these steps, you can successfully make a booking with British Airways for your desired flight itinerary with a stopover. Double-check all the details during the booking process to ensure accuracy, and don’t hesitate to reach out to British Airways customer service if you have any questions or concerns.

Step 5: Prepare for Your Stopover

As your British Airways stopover approaches, it’s important to make the necessary preparations to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience. Here are some essential steps to take as you get ready for your stopover:

  • Research the Stopover City: Dive deeper into your stopover city by conducting more research. Familiarize yourself with its culture, customs, local transportation options, and popular attractions. Create a rough itinerary of places you want to visit and activities you want to experience during your stay.
  • Check Visa Requirements: Verify if you need a visa to enter the stopover city. Review the visa requirements for your nationality and ensure that you have all the necessary documentation. Apply for the visa well in advance of your trip to allow for processing time if required.
  • Pack Accordingly: Consider the weather and activities you have planned for your stopover and pack accordingly. Pack appropriate clothing, comfortable walking shoes, any necessary adapters for electrical outlets, and any specific items required for your planned activities. Don’t forget essential travel documents such as passports, visas, and travel insurance.
  • Arrange Accommodation: Book your accommodation in advance to secure a place to stay during your stopover. Research different options, such as hotels, hostels, or vacation rentals, and choose one that suits your preferences and budget. Consider factors such as proximity to attractions and public transportation.
  • Plan Transportation: Explore transportation options in your stopover city. Research public transportation systems, such as trains or buses, and consider purchasing tickets or travel passes in advance. Alternatively, you may decide to rent a car or use ride-sharing services, depending on your preferences and the accessibility of your planned destinations.
  • Learn Basic Language Phrases: Familiarize yourself with a few basic phrases in the local language of your stopover city. Simple greetings, polite expressions, and thank you can go a long way in making connections with locals and showing respect for their culture.
  • Notify Banks and Mobile Providers: Notify your bank and mobile service provider about your travel plans, including the stopover city. Inform them of the dates and destinations to avoid any issues with your bank accounts or mobile services while abroad. Consider activating an international calling and data plan if necessary.
  • Stay Updated on Travel Advisories: Keep an eye on travel advisories and check for any updates or alerts regarding your stopover destination. Stay informed about any potential safety concerns or changes in travel regulations that may affect your plans. It’s always a good idea to prioritize your safety and stay informed throughout your journey.

By taking these steps and making proper preparations, you can ensure that you are ready for your British Airways stopover. With your research done, necessary documents in hand, and accommodations and transportation sorted, you can look forward to an exciting and memorable stopover experience.

How to book award flights using British Airways Avios

Ben Smithson

Whenever the topic of British Airways Avios comes up, we hear rumbles, like "those points come with high fees," "they're hard to use," and "I'm not going to London anytime soon." Indeed, if you're looking for award flights from the U.S. to Europe on British Airways, Avios offer poor value due to high carrier surcharges on awards .

However, don't let these frustrations keep you from looking into the program's sweet spots. TPG currently values Avios at 1.5 cents each , and you can get much more than that thanks to British Airways' distance-based award chart .

And by using Iberia Avios — which can be transferred 1:1 from British Airways Avios — you can book round-trip flights to Europe from just 34,000 points (with reasonable taxes/fees).

Avios are easy to use and redeem — British Airways is the largest European airline servicing the United States, with dozens of flights every day. So award availability can be excellent.

Even if you aren't flying across the Atlantic, you can get great value redeeming Avios for short-haul flights on partner airlines like American Airlines and Alaska Airlines, or even island hopping around the Caribbean on British Airways' unique fifth freedom routes .

There's certainly value to be had from British Airways Avios. But if you've never booked using the British Airways website, it can take some getting used to. Here is how you book award flights online using British Airways Avios.

Sign up for a British Airways Executive Club account

First, you're going to need a British Airways Executive Club account. You can sign up easily online.

Sign into your British Airways account

When searching for awards on the BA website, I usually log in to my account using the log-in widget at the top right of the www.britishairways.com homepage:

Alternatively, you can select "Manage" from the top menu and then select "Log in to my Executive Club" to be taken to the Executive Club log-in page .

British Airways' website is one of the better options for searching Oneworld award availability . However, Qantas' website is even better, and American Airlines has added online booking for most of its partners in recent years. So you might want to start on another website to find space before heading back to the BA website to book award flights.

Know which partners you can book online

As noted above, British Airways is a great option for searching Oneworld award availability. You can search and book award seats on all of the Oneworld member airlines:

  • American Airlines.
  • Alaska Airlines.
  • Cathay Pacific.
  • Iberia, including Iberia Express and Air Nostrum.
  • Japan Airlines.
  • Malaysia Airlines.
  • Qantas, including QantasLink and Jetconnect.
  • Royal Air Maroc.
  • Royal Jordanian.
  • SriLankan Airlines.

The only exception is award inventory on Aer Lingus , which is not available on the British Airways website. To book awards with this carrier, you will need to search for award availability on another site. You can use ExpertFlyer (owned by TPG's parent company, Red Ventures) to search, or you could use United.com for an approximation of Aer Lingus award space.

To book Aer Lingus, you can call the U.S.-based British Airways call center at 800-325-4504 from within the United States (or 800-247-9297 from outside the United States) from 7:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time.

Search award availability on BA's website

Once you're logged in, you'll want to navigate to the Book Flights With Avios page to search for award availability. On the following page, fill in your origin and destination airport, date, class of service, number of passengers and click "get flights" at the bottom:

multi flight trip british airways

The search results will show award availability for three classes of service — the service selected, plus the one above and below. So, if you're flexible on which class of service you'll want, you'll want to pick "premium economy" to see economy, premium economy and business class space. You can also choose "business" to see premium economy, business and first class availability.

Don't click on the "check reward flight availability" link. It will redirect you to another page when you're already in the right spot.

Award availability will appear for the date you search. If not, BA lets you easily search plus or minus three days at the top of the results page, helpfully noting which dates have award availability.

multi flight trip british airways

If you're looking for a specific flight, you can scroll down to see if it's available. Also, for those booking American Airlines domestic first-class flights, it's important to note that British Airways shows these under the "business class" column.

Check the pricing

Once the Avios are in your account, it's time to actually book your award flight. Select your preferred option from the search results and click "Continue" at the bottom. Where you have selected a partner flight, you will be given a fixed cost in Avios, plus taxes, fees and surcharges (for domestic flights in the United States they are a very reasonable $5.60 per flight).

multi flight trip british airways

If you choose a flight operated by British Airways, you will be presented with a range of pricing options to pay fewer Avios and more cash.

multi flight trip british airways

Grabbing a calculator and our monthly valuation of Avios is a good idea to decide which option is the best value. Using the most Avios for the business class flight to London above, you would be paying $1,350 worth of Avios (90,000 x 1.5c) plus $278 of fees, taxes and carrier-imposed charges (225 British pounds), for a total of $1,628.

At the other end of the scale, using only $468 of Avios (21,250 x 1.5c) plus $1,239 of fees, taxes and surcharges (1,000 British pounds) would be $1,707 in total. There isn't much of a difference here, so it would depend on how many Avios you wish to part with.

Finalize your booking

Read and agree to the terms on the next page, then click "continue" to progress. Your personal information should be populated from your account profile on the next page. Update as needed and click "continue" again. On the final page, complete your payment information to finalize the booking.

Transferring points to British Airways Avios

multi flight trip british airways

The easiest way to earn a meaningful number of Avios for everyday spending is by applying for the British Airways Visa Signature Card .

This card offers new applicants 75,000 Avios after you spend $5,000 on purchases within the first three months from account opening. TPG values Avios at 1.5 cents each , making the full bonus worth $1,125. The British Airways Visa Signature has a $95 annual fee and earns 3 Avios per $1 spent on purchases with British Airways, Aer Lingus, Iberia and Level. Plus, you can earn 2 Avios per $1 spent on hotel accommodations when purchased directly with the hotel. All other purchases earn 1 Avios per $1 spent.

Remembering that Avios can easily be transferred between the different programs that use this currency at a 1:1 ratio. So you should also consider the Aer Lingus Visa Signature Card or the Iberia Visa Signature Card , which offer the same 75,000 Avios welcome bonus, with the same generous earning rate and low annual fee.

The following cards all currently offer strong welcome bonuses that you could easily convert to Avios:

  • American Express® Gold Card : Earn 60,000 Membership Rewards points after you spend $6,000 on purchases in the first six months of account opening. Terms apply.
  • The Platinum Card® from American Express : Earn 80,000 Membership Rewards points after you spend $8,000 on purchases within the first six months of card membership. Check to see if you're targeted for an up to 125,000-point welcome offer through CardMatch (offer subject to change at any time). Terms apply.
  • The Business Platinum Card® from American Express : Earn 120,000 bonus points after spending $15,000 on purchases on the card in the first three months of card membership.
  • Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card : Earn 75,000 bonus miles once you spend $4,000 on purchases within the first three months from account opening.
  • Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card : Earn 75,000 bonus miles once you spend $4,000 on purchases within the first three months from account opening.
  • Chase Sapphire Preferred Card : Earn 60,000 bonus points after spending $4,000 on purchases in the first three months from account opening.
  • Citi Premier® Card: (see rates and fees )Earn 60,000 bonus points after spending $4,000 on purchases in the first three months from account opening.
  • Ink Business Preferred Credit Card : Earn 100,000 bonus points after you spend $8,000 on purchases in the first three months from account opening.

Bottom line

Booking award flights with Avios on British Airways' website can help you take advantage of incredible sweet spots like American Airlines lie-flat business-class flights domestically for 16,500 Avios, short-haul British Airways flights for just 4,750 Avios, flights between the U.S. West Coast and Hawaii for 13,000 Avios and flights between the East Coast and Ireland for just 13,000 Avios.

It's one of those programs that is worth using, even if it takes a little extra effort.

When British Airways is cheaper than Ryanair

multi flight trip british airways

High charges for luggage and seat selection mean that Ryanair and other budget airlines may not have the cheapest tickets this summer.

When we compared the price of three April flights from London airports -  to Malaga, Athens and Naples, Ryanair’s headline fare was cheaper than British Airways and Jet2 every time.

However, when we added a cabin bag and seat selection, British Airways was cheaper on two out of three routes. Jet2 was cheaper than Ryanair on the other route.

Ryanair has repeatedly introduced new extras and fees over the past few years. Its basic fare now only includes a backpack or handbag that fits under the seat in front of you, while parents must pay to sit next to children as young as three years old.

Ryanair cabin bag costs

On a return flight from London to Malaga Ryanair’s basic price was £36 cheaper than BA. But when we added a cabin bag to put in the overhead locker - and chose a seat with Ryanair -  BA was  £25 cheaper.

On a return flight from London to Athens Ryanair appeared to be £32 cheaper than Jet2 - but when we added a bag and a seat Jet2 was £29 cheaper than Ryanair.

Both British Airways and Jet2 allow you to take cabin luggage to put in the overhead locker for free. They also, usually seat travel companions together for free, so we didn’t add seat selection to those fares.

Wizz Air charges over £100 for extras

Wizz Air’s extras were even more expensive. Somebody browsing a flight comparison site for a trip to Athens or Naples at Easter might have thought Wizz was cheaper than its rivals.

However, just putting a bag in the overhead locker cost a startling £89 for each return trip. Seat selection was also the most expensive we found - £24 for a return booking. Wizz Air and Ryanair are much less likely to seat travel companions together, unless they pay.

It’s a reminder to travellers to always take so-called extras into account when you book a fight.

How British Airways, easyJet, Jet2, Ryanair and Wizz flights compare - once you add cabin luggage

All flight dates were for the same weekends in April - booking in December - and coming back a week later. We picked destinations to which all five airlines flew to from London airports. For Ryanair and Wizz we paid for seat selection as they often separate passengers who don’t pay. For the other airlines over 90% of passengers are typically seated with travel companions without paying, so we didn’t add seat selection to those fares. The cheapest flight for each route is in yellow.

Which is the cheapest airline - and the best?

Budget airlines such as easyJet, Ryanair and Wizz Air may well be the cheapest if you’re just travelling with a bag that fits under your seat.

However, if you want to take enough luggage for a week’s holiday - and be confident that you’ll sit next to your children or travel companion without paying - other airlines can beat them for price.

British Airways’ early morning flights from Gatwick (all three we checked departed before 7am) can have low prices once you take into account its more generous luggage allowance.

When we asked thousands of travellers about their experience of flying, Jet2 - which also includes cabin baggage in the ticket - was the best short-haul carrier. Wizz Air was the worst.

The best airlines for short-haul and long-haul flights.

Wizz response

When we contacted Wizz Air for comment at the end of last year it accepted that its standards had fallen in summer 2022 but told us that it had invested significantly in customer service since then. It said: ‘Our customer satisfaction has improved significantly.’ It also said that the average price for cabin luggage is lower than on the three routes and dates we looked at.

Which is the most punctual and reliable airline?

Unfortunately British Airways flights had a very poor record for punctuality and cancellations when we checked last year.

BA cancelled 3.3% of its flights less than 24-hours before they were due to depart in the year up to September 2023.

Just as bad, 2.4% of its BA Euroflyer flights - which operate from Gatwick airport - were more than three hours late.

Which are the best and worst airlines for punctuality?

BA response

When we contacted BA at the end of last year it told us: ‘We always work hard to get our customers to where they need to be on time. . .Over the last year we experienced several factors outside of our control that had an adverse impact on our customers, such as adverse weather and Air Traffic Control industrial action.’

Which is better - easyJet or Ryanair?

In our snapshot price comparisons, easyJet came out cheaper than Ryanair - despite the fact that it has copied its rival’s policy of making you pay for cabin luggage.

You can’t read too much into the results of just three price comparisons but our annual airlines survey results do show significant differences between the two carriers.

easyJet vs Ryanair: Which is better for punctuality, seat comfort, customer service and value for money?

British Airways Expands ‘£1 Fare’ Option to All Flights

Gordon Smith , Skift

April 16th, 2024 at 6:35 AM EDT

Loyalty programs are huge business for many airlines, with fierce competition for well-heeled frequent fliers. BA will be hoping these changes make its Avios scheme more attractive to existing and future customers.

Gordon Smith

British Airways has announced a big change to redemptions in its loyalty program. The airline is making every flight available to buy from just £1 ($1.25), plus Avios.

Until now, the lowest available ‘cash plus Avios’ price was dependent on multiple factors, meaning overall fare combinations varied considerably.

Operated by IAG Loyalty,  Avios is the reward currency  used by British Airways and other major airlines including Iberia, Qatar Airways, and Finnair. It also has partnerships with brands including American Express, Avis Budget Group, and Marriott.

From today, members of the Executive Club have the option to discount any British Airways flight to as little as £1, with the difference being paid in Avios. The incentive applies to seats throughout the aircraft from economy right up to first class.

Refining Frequent Flier Perks

In line with many of its competitors, such as  Virgin Atlantic’s Flying Club , British Airways has long  offered a part payment service .

This allows frequent fliers or other high spenders to lower the cash price of their booking by using more points. In addition to journeys operated by BA, it can also be used on American Airlines flights between the U.K. and the United States, as well as some codeshare services.

Colm Lacy, British Airways’ Chief Commercial Officer, said the decision was made after listening to feedback from Executive Club members. “We know that most of our customers choose the lowest cash amount when it comes to making Reward Flight bookings, so we anticipate this to be a popular option for those using Avios part payment too. Ultimately, our goal is to keep adding more choice and flexibility for members.”

The change does not impact BA’s popular ‘Reward Flight’ scheme. These will continue to be priced at a fixed rate, with a limited number available for each service.

British Airways Under Scrutiny

The development comes as British Airways continues a  £7 billion ($8.9 billion)  transformation program. Over the next two years, the flag carrier aims to overhaul its operation and enhance the passenger experience. It follows allegations that  underinvestment and outsourcing  have left the airline on the back foot.

Last month, the airline launched the latest phase of a major new advertising campaign. Its unorthodox format sparked controversy as well as critical acclaim.

Airline loyalty programs  are nothing new , however, in recent years they have grown to become critical assets for many major airlines.

For example, American Airlines’ AAdvantage scheme and United Airlines’ MileagePlus program were recently valued at $24 billion and $22 billion, respectively. For its part, IAG Loyalty says there are more than 40 million Avios collectors worldwide.

Does British Airways Have WiFi?

  • British Airways aims to fully equip its entire fleet with WiFi by the end of 2025.
  • While the long-haul fleet mostly has WiFi, not all short-haul Airbus variants are connected.
  • Passengers are charged for WiFi, with options like a messaging package and a more comprehensive browse and stream option.

Staying connected is more important than ever, especially for frequent travelers who need to maximize their productivity while flying. But in-flight internet connectivity isn’t only for those who work. Other passengers simply want access to their everyday luxuries in the air, whether it's social media or the latest streaming service.

British Airways passengers itching for the internet might be disappointed that the airline still hasn’t equipped all its aircraft with WiFi. The airline is five years past its 2019 deadline of equipping all long-haul aircraft with in-flight WiFi service. However, the new plan is to have the entire fleet equipped with WiFi by the end of 2025.

British Airways fleet connectivity

British Airways has only one year and change left to fully equip its long- and short-haul fleet with WiFi if it wants to reach the 2025 deadline. While progress is ongoing, the airline isn’t making a big deal about which aircraft have WiFi and which don’t, which doesn't provide passengers with much uniformity.

Short haul fleet

Thanks to a post by AirGuide Destinations , we know which aircraft aren’t getting WiFi. The Airbus A319 models will not get a WiFi retrofit, as they are currently being phased out. Only four of the 29 aircraft of this particular variant are equipped with the service, so there’s a slim chance that the next BA A319 flight will have WiFi.

More than half of the A320 and A321 models, including the new engine option (neo) variants, are equipped with WiFi. However, the A320-200 and A321-200 variants have an average age of 17.6 and 18.4 years, respectively. This means that many older aircraft are nearing the end of their lives and will not see any future upgrades.

The airline also operates 20 Embraer ERJ-190 aircraft for smaller regional flights. It’s unclear if these have WiFi, and there’s very little information about them.

In summary:

  • Airbus A319: Only four aircraft are equipped with WiFi
  • Airbus A320: Most aircraft are being retrofitted with WiFi.
  • Airbus A320neo: The new aircraft comes with WiFi fitted from the factory.
  • Airbus A321: Most aircraft are equipped with WiFi.
  • Airbus A321neo: Fitted with WiFi connectivity from the factory.
  • Embraer ERJ-190: Not available.

Long-haul fleet

Over the last few years, British Airways has focused its WiFi retrofit efforts on its long-haul fleet, and it shows. Very few aircraft in the long-haul fleet lack internet connectivity.

Let’s start with Airbus's latest aircraft, the A350 XWB . British Airways operates the larger A350-1000 variant, which is equipped with WiFi systems from the factory. The airline currently operates 18 A350s, all of which have WiFi. BA currently operates 12 Airbus A380 superjumbos as well, all equipped with WiFi.

Now, let’s move on to the Boeing side of things. BA operates an extensive 777 fleet, with 59 aircraft across two variants. According to One Mile At A Time , all 59 aircraft, 43 777-200 and 16 777-300ER models, are equipped with WiFi.

BA operates the latest widebody Boeing produced in its long-haul fleet - the 787 Dreamliner. The fleet has three variants: the B787-8, -9 and -10. None of the -8 and -9 models came from Boeing with WiFi and, therefore, needed a retrofit for the service to be available. BA had a program in Cardiff to retrofit the aircraft . However, it was stopped during COVID-19 and hasn’t been restarted.

As it stands, all 787 -8s and four of the 18 787-9s lack WiFi. The 787-10 models were fitted with WiFi from the factory, and as a result, all seven are WiFi capable.

British Airways Makes Big Changes To US Airbus A380 Flights This Winter

How much does it cost.

British Airways charges passengers for WiFi unless they are BA First customers. Two WiFi packages are available, so passengers can choose the one that fits their needs.

Messaging package

The messaging package allows customers to send and receive instant messages and emails via various applications. However, attachments and large files are not allowed. The package is free for Executive Club Members, who can sign up at no cost.

The prices for non-members are as follows:

  • £1.99 - £2.99 non-members on short-haul flights
  • £2.99 - £4.99 non-members on long-haul flights

The prices start at £1.99/£2.99 for one hour. At the top end, £2.99/£4.99 is for the flight pass, which lasts the entire flight duration.

The Browse and Stream package

Browse and Stream is a more comprehensive package that doesn’t limit what you can do on the Internet. It gives you all the perks of the messaging package, plus the ability to browse the Internet, view social media, and stream music and video content.

The prices for this package are as follows:

  • £4.99 - £11.99 (short-haul flights)
  • £4.99 - £21.99 (long-haul flights)

The package's duration depends on the length of the flight. For example, a flight pass from Newark to London on a Boeing 777 costs £14.99.

The specific connectivity types and associated packages are shown below:

What’s the connection like?

The WiFi packages at British Airways tend to be a bit pricier. However, there is no data cap, which means you can use as much as you like. But passengers are often peeved by slow WiFi on flights, so how does BA fare?

Speeds can vary, depending on the route and satellite backhaul loads. British Airways doesn't promise a certain speed, but says in its terms and conditions,

Due to a variety of factors, Wi-Fi Service coverage, speed and quality may vary there are areas in which there may be sporadic or no coverage, the Wi-Fi Service may be disrupted due to altitude, weather, flight path, solar (electromagnetic) storms or similar interference and issues with satellite or terrestrial backhaul may degrade, limit or prevent operation of the Wi-Fi Service.

UK-based ISP Preview conducted an onboard WiFi test in 2022, flying from London to Dubai on an Airbus A380. The reviewer stated the below results:

Fastest Results (Average)

  • Download Speed: 5.80Mbps
  • Upload Speed: 2.73Mbps
  • Latency: 655ms

Slowest Results (Average)

  • Download Speed: 0.57Mbps
  • Upload Speed: 0.22Mbps
  • Latency: 736ms

These speeds mean passengers will likely struggle to do large file transfers, P2P, video streaming or online gaming. However, Netflix is possible, and general work stuff like emails, Slack and documents should be fine. Social media scrolling and uploading essential travel photos should all work well.

NEWS... BUT NOT AS YOU KNOW IT

These ‘budget’ airlines are more expensive than BA

author image

British Airways planes

When heading away on our summer holidays, most of us will always choose the ‘low-cost’ carrier option – especially if it’s a short-haul flight.

However, sometimes ‘low-cost’ doesn’t mean cheapest, and you may get better deals with more traditionally expensive airline options.

According to UK consumer champion Which? , extra charges for luggage and seat selection mean that the likes of Ryanair and other budget airlines may not have the cheapest tickets this summer.

The organisation compared the price of three popular April flights from London airports. The destinations were Malaga, Athens and Naples. At first, Ryanair’s initial fare was cheaper than British Airways and Jet2.

However, after the addition of bags and seat selection, British Airways came out on top in two of the three routes. Meanwhile, Jet2 was more affordable than Ryanair on the other route.

Ryanair’s basic fare only permits you to bring a backpack or handbag that fits under the seat in front of you, and parents have to pay to sit next to children as young as three years old.

Extra charges

For the return journey from London to Malaga chosen by Which? for the investigation, Ryanair’s base fare was initially £36 cheaper than British Airways. However, after adding a cabin bag for the overhead locker and selecting a seat with Ryanair, BA turned out to be £25 more affordable.

Then for a return trip from London to Athens, Ryanair seemed to offer a £32 saving compared to Jet2. Yet, upon adding a bag and selecting a seat, Jet2 became £29 cheaper than Ryanair.

Both British Airways and Jet2 allow for complimentary cabin luggage for the overhead compartment. Also, both airlines typically assign seats for travel companions together without extra charge.

Wizz Air is another airline often touted as cheaper and better value, but according to Which?, its extras are even more expensive. Placing a bag in the overhead compartment will set you back an eye-watering £89 for each return trip. Seat selection is also costly and will see travellers forking out £24 for a return booking.

So, what was the end result and what airline is the best option for your pocket this summer? Well, if you are travelling with a bag that fits under your seat, traditional budget airlines like easyJet, Ryanair and Wizz Air are still the cheapest. Yet, if you want to take enough luggage for a week’s holiday or wish to sit next to your child or companion, you are advised by Which? to look at British Airways instead.

The consumer champion noted that BA early morning flights from Gatwick can have low prices with generous luggage allowances.

British Airways will increase the frequency of flights between San Diego and London from one flight per day to two, it was announced Tuesday.

Since San Diego International Airport first started offering the flights in 2011, British Airways has served about 2 million passengers traveling between San Diego and Europe, according to the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority. The market for the flight has grown 50% from 2019 to 2023, the agency said.

While London is the final destination for around 60% of the passengers flying this route, the other 40% connect to other cities, including Edinburgh, Dublin, Madrid, Barcelona, Lisbon, Cairo, Rome and Mumbai, airport authority officials said.

“We are looking forward to giving passengers on both sides of the Atlantic more options to fly nonstop between San Diego and Europe, while providing the same comfort and convenience of the popular route with British Airways that we already offer,” said Kimberly Becker, president and CEO of the airport authority.

SAN added the new flight on Saturday. It is seasonal and will end Oct. 25.

“We are delighted to launch this second daily flight from San Diego, further supporting the growth of business and leisure travel in the city and demonstrating our commitment to the region,” said Neil Chernoff, British Airways’ chief planning and strategy officer.

According to the airport authority, the flights will: arrive in San Diego from London at 6:10 p.m. and depart San Diego for London at 8 p.m.; and arrive in San Diego at 3:25 p.m. and depart for London at 5:15 p.m.

The route will be served by the airline’s Boeing 777 and 787 aircraft.

British Airways cheaper than budget rivals on some routes, study finds

Consumer group Which? considers impact when extras such as seat selection are added to headline fares

Airlines that boast about low prices can be more expensive than their rivals when extra costs are added to headline fares, according to a new study.

British Airways was cheaper than Ryanair and Wizz Air on two out of three routes analysed, according to consumer group Which?.

Researchers conducted a snapshot price analysis for the cheapest return flights from London airports to Malaga, Athens and Naples with Ryanair, Wizz Air, British Airways, Jet2 and EasyJet booked in December 2023 for travel on weekends this month.

They included the price of taking a cabin bag as hand luggage.

The cost of seat selection was added for Ryanair and Wizz Air as a previous survey indicated they are the airlines least likely to automatically seat travel companions together.

The study found that while budget airlines often had the cheapest headline fares, Ryanair and Wizz Air failed to return the lowest price on any occasion when the cost of a cabin bag and seat selection – always included in British Airways and Jet2 fares – were taken into account.

Naples price check

British Airways was found to have the lowest total price for Naples flights, at £120.

That compares with £198 with Jet2, £185 with Wizz Air, £132 with Ryanair and £126 with EasyJet.

British Airways was the second-cheapest airline, behind EasyJet, for Malaga flights, but the most expensive for trips to Athens.

Baggage and seat selection accounted for an average of £113 across the three routes with Wizz Air, £57 with Ryanair and £52 with EasyJet.

Wizz Air’s cabin bag fee includes priority boarding.

Unavoidable hidden charges for online consumers – or “drip pricing” – is to be banned under the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Bill progressing through Parliament.

Optional extras are not included in the legislation, but Which? believes fees for seat selection on flights should be covered.

Rory Boland, editor of magazine Which? Travel, said: “It’s easy to assume that budget airlines like Ryanair and Wizz Air are always the cheapest option.

“But if you want to sit next to your kids or take more than a few items of clothes with you, then you’ll increasingly find better prices elsewhere.

“Next time you’re booking a flight, look beyond the headline fare and factor in the cost of extras you need, before you book.”

A Ryanair spokesman said: “This is more fake news from Which?.

“Ryanair has the lowest fares of any airline in Europe and additional ancillary products, such as extra luggage, are entirely optional for customers.”

A spokeswoman for Wizz Air said its “average price” for cabin baggage and priority boarding is “much lower” than the one found by Which?.

She went on: “As an ultra-low cost carrier, we allow passengers to choose which services they wish to purchase so that we can offer the most affordable travel opportunities.

“Optional add-ons are not required to fly, and we believe that customers should be offered the choice and flexibility to choose the right products for them.”
