At the Strange New Worlds premiere event, TrekMovie had a brief moment to speak with Celia Rose Gooding, who has taken on the classic role of Nyota Uhura. The actress talked about how she has been involved in developing the look for Cadet Uhura on Strange New Worlds .

Can you talk about the choice for Uhura to have your short hair? Did anyone try to suggest a wig or anything else?

No. I auditioned like this and they loved it. So it was never a conversation. It was approached—like they asked me would I want to wear a wig? And my answer was, “Absolutely not.” Wigs? I like to let my scalp breathe. So to have an opportunity to look like myself and show up as myself as this character, it’s an incredible opportunity.

Rebecca Romijn talked about how you two are given a choice of which uniforms to wear.

Yeah, we choose.

Celia Rose Gooding as Uhura and Ethan Peck as Spock.

How does that work, choosing for each episode?

It depends on what’s going on. I like to keep the ratio pretty balanced of top and pant versus tunic. And also sometimes if I’m just feeling the tunic, sometimes I don’t want to try and swim into that top and pants. So it really is however we’re feeling. And the costumes department, they are so forgiving. They’re so collaborative. And so they email us before every episode with like, “What are you feeling? What do you want to do?” And we take it from there.

We get to see Uhura singing on the show, so was there any singing during your audition process?

No, they didn’t thank God! I have a theater background and so I’m sure there’s footage of me singing out there everywhere. I would have happily sang in the audition if they asked me to. [laughs]

I am genuinely curious why Celia’s hair style is the topic of conversation. We’re not talking about the hair style of any other actor/actress on the series. She looks good as she is, and I mean, yea it’s great that they didn’t force her to wear a wig, I can’t help but wonder why so much focus on her chosen style. People, fictional or otherwise change hair styles – it makes sense that Uhura would be no different. This is like the Janeway hair all over again.

I guess it is because the Uhura character on TOS series didn’t have such short hair and people are looking for ‘consistency’ whatever that means, same question, would it matter if Spock decided to go back to the Discovery beard and longer hair for strange new worlds?

That was a different time and a totally different era. It’s amazing that people do not change with the times and realize these things right away.

“For the times they are a-changin’”…

Nichelle Nichol’s take on Uhura’s new appearance, from the making of The Motion Picture :D https://trekkiefeminist.com/uhuras-tmp-hair/

Oops…Nichelle *Nichols’s*

I was just about to point that out! Yeah she changed hairstyles in time, that’s kind of common in real life too.

Look at Michael Burnham. This woman was changing hairstyles every several episodes for a while. She grew braids in the third season. Nobody cares because its just a person changing things up. It’s the same bizarre argument when Spock showed up in Discovery with a beard. People were arguing Spock didn’t have one in TOS either so therefore…

Lol. We’re all, every one of us, only human…=).🖖🏾

I think the fact her hair looks like a military buzzcut just doesn’t seem to fit with what we know of Uhura as a character. She was always quite feminine, and cadet Uhura has quite an androgynous appearance. I think it’s as relevant an issue to discuss as any.

Uhura’s a CADET at Starfleet Academy and it’s seven years before TOS. The character’s hairstyle at this point in Uhura’s timeline matching Celia’s makes a lot of sense. Uhura is an excited, loving life cadet in her final year getting to take her sea cruise on one of the best ships in Starfleet. . Why Celia has her hair that way is her choice. It’s not for me to approve or disapprove, because it’s her personal expression.

If you think about it though, if Ethan Peck’s Spock had a radically different haircut—if he had a shaved head or long braids down to his waist…people would be talking about the stylistic choice and whether it seems to fit the character. That said, Im more interested in Celia’s performance and whether she captures the spirit of Uhura. I liked her in the first episode. I’ll get used to the buzzcut.

I had no issue with Ms. Gooding’s appearance in the first episode; people change their hairstyle all the time. It’s her delivery that felt nothing like Uhura. Nichelle Nichols and even Zoe Saldana projected a slightly reserved nature in their interpretations once they were on the ship. They were never effervescent and bubbly. The scene where she is distracting the alien until Chapel can knock him out is a perfect example. Uhura was never chatty in that way with a complete stranger, let alone an alien. Watching that scene I got nothing from it that felt Uhura from the character. Same goes for Chapel, she came across more as a hyperactive cheerleader than a professional.

It’s a little depressing that so much focus was placed on her appearance but not a single word was spoken about her approach to the actual character.

As the person who did the interviews, I was trying to get to the fact that Celia Rose Gooding had some autonomy over her look, which didn’t happen on the older shows and definitely seemed important to her. Regrettably, we had a very short time with her and couldn’t get to the other questions on the list.

We also interviewed her just a few days before about other topics, and wanted to cover something different.

Then again, Nichols and Saldana played Uhura 10 or so years later in her life than the version Gooding plays.

I get that but there have to be recognizable threads in there or what’s the point of calling the character “Uhura”? I still have mannerisms that I had as a child. Did she even bother to say “hailing frequencies open” when she put pike on ship-wide comms?

But it’s only one episode, we’ll see where she goes with it.

She is not under any obligation to say that, though. That is not a character trait.

Given that she is a cadet at the time of this show I found no fault with her enthusiasm. Perhaps with more experience she will gain more reserve. Although I liked her portrayal in that scene. It felt like something Uhura would have said if she had more lines than normal. It also helped the story by showing that they studied the people of Kiley before their arrival. As the communication officer she would be a part of that study. As for Saldana’s performance…its good but it’s also HER performance,. I like that Celia is getting to put her own personal spin on Uhura. Then again I also have zero issues with them “updating” the characters for this show. So take my statements how you wish.

That scene in the elevator was perfect Uhura in my opinion. It was established in TOS that she monitors all planetary transmissions when the ship is in orbit around a previously unexplored planet. It made total sense that she knew the colloquialisms and was able to immediately engage the gentleman in conversation about a local sports team. I mean she was the one to dope out the whole “Worshipers of the Son” conundrum in “Bread and Circuses” just by listening to the broadcasts after all.

Furthermore, when the TOS writers allowed it Uhura showed she was very cool under pressure. Improvising that little conversation on the fly was right on track for her! She knew what was going on and didn’t panic! Total Starfleet pro! Can’t wait to see where they go with these characters!

I actually consider Uhura outgoing. She has sang in TOS, I think more than once, was curious about the Tribbles and in Mirror, Mirror was very outspoken.

Someone mentioned that she had to refer to the Klingon books to translate Klingon in ST VI. I found that insulting to the character. An officer in her position would have had to have known more than they made it out to be.

I believe Nichelle Nichols said the exact same thing about that bit of TUC!

She’s beautiful the way she is.

If you look at the NASA unveiling of the Enterprise space shuttle in 1976, with all the Star Trek cast members there except Shatner, Nichelle Nichols is there sporting her hair as short as the current Gooding’s hair on the show. Have a look. They’re almost a spitting image of one another.

comment image

Nichelle’s hair is still straight in that photo, or perhaps the more accurate description is relaxed – I’m not a hair stylist^^ – HOWEVER having said all that, perhaps most have forgotten that in the movie of the time i.e. TMP, she sported a big bold beautiful afro (and it may even have been a wig, I’m too lazy to find out)

So…the character of Uhura, and Nichelle, and curly hair have indeed gone together on-screen previously. Ms Gooding’s appearance is fine=) https://www.nasa.gov/image-feature/star-trek-and-nasa-54-years-and-counting/

More than fine, in fact – *consistent*.

Is it just pulled back into a bun?

Hair styles change, this is years before TOS. It’s short because she’s a cadet spending time studying Klingon or in TOS wasn’t it Klingonese? ;-)

It’s pulled back into a bun yes, meaning Nichelle’s hair is still straight ie ofc not an afro – buzzcut, bouffant or otherwise. I thought your saying her hair being short implied it was an afro like Celia’s…I misunderstood. Someone else said Michael Burnham’s style has changed a lot also…I can’t comment on that cuz I’ve never seen more than a tiny bit of Discovery. People will have to get used to Ms Gooding’s look as the character if, for whatever reason, they find it jarring and given time, people will. I do admit, it jarred me too – not gonna beat myself up though as ofc sometimes change is disconcerting and you, me and everybody else are only human (although…while I get why it was done, I don’t think I’ll ever *like* the latest ‘orginal, old’ Starship Enterprise; just get used to it) but apart from knowing many women do indeed change styles in reality, it helped me hugely when I remembered Ms Nichols as Uhura in TMP (and just how stunning she was in it on top)

Lol Uhura’s supposed to be an expert in languages or is it linguistics, true enough. In The Trouble with Troubles their language was called Klingon’ee/ii according to the Klingon officer winding up Scotty and Chekov aboard the station, wasn’t it. Gutted his description was never used again AFAIK. Compared to ‘Klingonese’, both the sound and the spelling seem…more exotic, otherworldly, alien. *sigh*

Excuse the rambling!🖖🏾

Love having Uhura there and love the idea that her look (and style) can progress over time.

https://images.app.goo.gl/aj4hmHWtUDA92YW68

https://trekkiefeminist.com/uhuras-tmp-hair/

Exactly! Damn Nichelle Nichols is so awesome across all her styles over time. Love how Celia Rose Gooding can continue the tradition.

All of that – absolutely!🖖🏾

It’s always about an actress’s hair or weight. I remember all the Janeway hair hubbub and more recently,Tilly’s weight. Never the character or the performance. It’s 2022,can’t we do better than this? There are women that change their hairstyles frequently. Why wouldn’t Cadet Uhura have short hair now longer later( or not,if she chooses)?

Yeah it’s kind of sad it’s the women actors on these shows whose appearance get so much scrutiny. I get it’s because this Uhura’s hair is different from the original but yeah it’s silly. She simply grew her hair out TEN YEARS LATER!! Leave it at that.

The evolution here is that in modern times, Star Trek actresses are part of the whole conversation about their hair and their clothes. This is a huge shift from back in the day. The hair thing started with Discovery, and now they’re even choosing which uniform type to wear. I think it’s great.

For the record Laurie, my comment was not aimed at you at all or even for asking the question. I was talking about the people on boards who ARE making it an issue questioning how her hair looks now or debating it should just be longer, etc. I was talking about those people specifically.

What you asked is fine and I think it’s great no one tried to get her to change her hair because it’s not needed. Yes if this was in the actual TOS years, people would have an argument, but even then it’s not really a big one. Yes they are playing old characters but it’s still a different interpretation of those characters as well. She is obviously not playing the character as Nichelle Nichols played her so physical differences shouldn’t be a big issue at this point either.

She didn’t have much screentime in the pilot but really liked her performance. I dind’t see much of Uhura in there but that might just be because Nichols never really got anything to do in the show or the movies anyway, so there’s not much to go on :-D

I will just say it. Sexy and beautiful.

Pop culture with a different perspective.

Celia Rose Gooding on Staying True to Herself and Uhura in ‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’

Celia Rose Gooding is a woman of her time just like the iconic character she plays on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds – Cadet Nyota Uhura.

“I’m really tapped in,” Gooding told The Nerds of Color last week. “I am someone very much of my generation. I would say I’m a bit chronically online as the saying goes.”

Gooding, like Uhura, is keen on communications and keeping up with the world around her. She is active on social media and stays up-to-date on all things Star Trek — including Twitter, Instagram, and Reddit. So to play the new communications recruit wasn’t a stretch for the actress.

Strange New Worlds , which premiered May 5 on Paramount+, centers Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) and his crew embarking on several missions abroad the U.S.S. Enterprise. Gooding plays the young communications officer, Nyota Uhura — best known as being played by Nichelle Nichols in Star Trek: The Original Series and by Zoe Saldana in the J.J. Abrams Star Trek reboot. Of course, this is not the same Uhura that fans recognize, because this Uhura is a new cadet — fresh out of the Academy — and still trying to figure out her place in Starfleet. Gooding is excited to explore this side of Uhura that hasn’t been seen before.

“[For me] to really showcase that very human insecurity that I think more people have and [more] than we are often [willing to] admit, it was incredibly important to show this iconic character, who was so beloved in the franchise, as someone who wasn’t really sure in the beginning.” said Gooding. “[She] really had to dig deep [to] find that confidence within herself and to be uplifted by her crew, I think it was incredibly beautiful to establish that canonically.”

uhura star trek strange new worlds earrings

Of course, portraying an already established and beloved character didn’t come without its baggage. The recent Star Trek series have been met with some pushback from the older generation of fans who aren’t tuned in with current times and the way the future should be. Gooding is aware of this and doesn’t take any of the comments seriously. She’s living in the moment and is focused on doing what she believes is best for her character.

“There are people from all different walks of life and all different backgrounds who really enjoy the show and there are people with very different ideologies who watch the show, and sometimes may want Star Trek’ s ideology to match their own,” Gooding explained. “They may not mesh and that may cause controversy, strife, and drama. But as long as my cast reminds me that as long as I stay true to myself and I’m proud of what I’m doing, I [will] keep going and continue to do what feels right and feels appropriate for this character and really make it my own.”

We chat more about what Uhura represents to her and Black women everywhere — including the topic of Black women’s hair, Uhura and Spock’s relationship, and what she hopes to see next season.

The Nerds of Color: This character is iconic — Nichelle was the first Black woman lead on television and she represents so much for Black women and women of color in the Star Trek world. She was still the only woman character in the J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek films as well. There’s so much history from this character but you’re playing her at the beginning. There’s so much to add to her rich history. Is there something you really want to bring to her and her canon/history?

Celia Rose Gooding: Yes. We have incredible writers on the show and they are really giving us a wealth of information and a cornucopia of awesomeness. I wish I had a more elegant way to [say] it. But I think what we are doing with this character – giving young cadet Uhura an opportunity to really showcase the very human sides of her – the sides that may not be super confident about everything she’s doing and the sides of her who may need a bit of encouragement. It was incredibly important for me to really humanize this character. The social climate of the ’60s didn’t have that opportunity [for Uhura] to really be a full well-rounded human[with a backstory] and so to establish it in canon that she was someone who wasn’t really sure about her position in Starfleet and wasn’t really sure that what she could offer to the crew was worthy. [For me] to really showcase that very human insecurity that I think more people have and [more] than we are often [willing to] admit, it was incredibly important to show this iconic character, who was so beloved in the franchise, as someone who wasn’t really sure in the beginning. [She] really had to dig deep [to] find that confidence within herself and to be uplifted by her crew, I think it was incredibly beautiful to establish that canonically.

uhura star trek strange new worlds earrings

Because we do have some information from Star Trek: The Original Series and from the J.J. Abrams reboot, was there anything that you were excited to bring that was already established? We already got to hear you sing and other aspects of her personality. Is there anything that you were excited to bring that was from the canon?

Yeah, you touched on it. I have an opportunity to really show her performance side – her singing and dancing. Well, her singing and her movement. We don’t get a lot of dancing, but she carries herself well. To really flesh out her singing talents and her gift of song and how the math of music is something that she has an eye on, Uhura is brilliant. The Uhura that I’m playing doesn’t really know how truly brilliant she is. Because she’s lived with her intelligence for so long, she doesn’t take it as seriously as the franchise will in the future. So to really flesh out her brilliance and her brain and how that influences her performance and just the math of music, even as someone who’s a singer herself, I had no idea the music theory that [comes with it]. To have an opportunity to really flesh out something that we saw bits and pieces of in the original series, that was really cool.

I love that you kept your short hair — giving us another feel for Uhura and what she represents. It’s also a big deal with Black women. Was this something you discussed with your family or your team?

I shaved my head. Oh gosh, it feels like forever ago now. But I remember calling my agent and letting him know like, ‘Hey, I’m gonna shave my head just so you know. He was like, ‘Okay.’ I am incredibly lucky to have to work in a space that is really accepting of how I present myself and have a team that is incredibly supportive. They really roll with the punches with what I decided to do with myself. I auditioned with my short hair like this, and the team loved it. And there was a moment where they were very comfortable with me showing up and playing with my shaved head. They asked me, ‘Hey, do you want to wear a wig? Would you feel more comfortable wearing a wig?’ I was like, ‘No, I love my hair like this.’ Nichelle [Nichols] herself was someone who really advocated for the multifaceted presentation of Black women in Star Trek . She was someone who really championed the idea that there are so many different ways that Black women present themselves, and all of them are worthy in the future. She really advocated for the natural presentation of Black women in Star Trek . To have an opportunity to really continue that legacy and pass that torch down to 2022, it was an incredible opportunity. I’m so glad that it’s been so well-received.

uhura star trek strange new worlds earrings

As a longtime Star Trek fan, I’ve seen the prejudice and racism from the community towards women and People of Color. I know when Star Trek: Discovery was first introduced — the cast was met with unwarranted comments, but they had fans like us who supported the series 100%. Did any of the new series cast or creatives offer any advice on navigating this fandom and their treatment?

Oh yeah! I am someone very much of my generation. I would say I’m a bit chronically online as the saying goes. I think something that the cast told me when I [told them] I read everything on Twitter was to [not] take it too seriously. Everyone has an opinion. And, sometimes, some of them are a little harsher than others. Of course, continue to stay tuned in and really listen to the fans, but also don’t take everything they say personally, because this franchise is so loved. There’s such an incredibly vast audience. There are people from all different walks of life and all different backgrounds who really enjoy the show and there are people with very different ideologies who watch the show, and sometimes may want Star Trek’ s ideology to match their own. They may not mesh and that may cause controversy, strife, and drama. But as long as my cast reminds me that as long as I stay true to myself and I’m proud of what I’m doing, I [will] keep going and continue to do what feels right and feels appropriate for this character and really make it my own. This character is so loved and so popular. I had a bit of anxiety about trying to personalize this character and really make it my own, but my cast [are] incredibly supportive and incredibly collaborative. I really do love this cast [as] family. They uplift and support me. It’s incredible how we work together. It’s an incredibly talented group — and incredibly diverse group of both look and mind. It’s been an incredible experience.

The series touches on a lot of deep subjects of prejudice, other-ism, loneliness — was there a topic that really hit close to you?

Of course. As a young person in the entertainment industry as someone who’s just getting started, I think [Uhura] having an opportunity to really showcase and spotlight those initial feelings of weariness [really] hit close to home. As someone who was still sort of figuring out their place in this industry, to play a character who was also doing the same was really cathartic. To sort of admit as a character of ‘I don’t know if this is what I’m cut out to do’ and while it may be where all of [her] talents lie, there’s still so many pieces of who I am that I’m still figuring out and still making sense of. So to play a character who’s sort of doing that same thing, it was incredibly therapeutic.

Based on the Kelvin timeline, Uhura and Spock have a thing. They do have a moment on the Enterprise. Is this something that was discussed or did they tell you not to worry about it?

In Strange New Worlds , I think something that was really highlighted especially in these first two episodes was Uhura and Spock’s friendship. I don’t know if it’s going to develop into anything romantic. I’m not sure. That wasn’t something that the writers spoke to me about directly. That wasn’t anything we ever really touched on. I think Spock and Uhura have an incredibly iconic friendship that was seen in TOS and to sort of continue that in Strange New Worlds , it’s incredible. I love Ethan Peck. He is someone who I really look up to and also really appreciate having a friendship with. Our characters, when we see them in Strange New Worlds , they have a lot of similarities. I think there are more similarities than they themselves even know. So that iconic friendship between the two of them really means a lot to me. The fact that, in the second episode [“The Children of the Comet”], we see Spock and Uhura really open up to him. We see Spock give her that affirmation and that support really meant a lot to me.

uhura star trek strange new worlds earrings

Strange New Worlds was given a second season before the series even premiered. Is there something you’d like your character to touch on the next season that we didn’t get to see this season?

We’re currently shooting season two right now. Today is my first day off in a minute, too. I think something that I’m excited to really showcase is just Uhura’s connection to the idea of community and family, what it means to belong, what it means to be a part of a crew that really feels like a family that really feels like a well-oiled machine and a really tight unit. I really am excited to touch on what that means to Uhura. We learn in the second episode that she lost her family in an incredibly traumatic situation. The idea of community and family is [an] incredibly sensitive and touchy subject for her. I think something I’m excited for season two is to sort of really heal and find something for Uhura to connect to and to put trust in this family and crew. So hopefully we’ll get more of an opportunity to sort of see how she values relationships and how she values herself as a member of this crew and as someone who is incredibly integral to how this family runs.

As a Trekkie from a family of Trekkies, is there an alien or piece of technology that you were most excited to see or interact with?

Honestly, it’s a credibly cliche, but as someone who comes from a Trek family, I was just so excited about stepping on the bridge and being able to see and be a part of that set that is so iconic. To have an opportunity to have the delta and just the iconic pieces of the tricorders, the communicators, and the phaser, [was incredible]. It was just the world building from our props department, costumes department, and sets department. They work so hard. It was just incredibly exciting to really establish myself and ground myself in this universe with these details that have been thought about so thoroughly. The attention to detail is impeccable and have a part of that to call my own. That was something that I was really looking forward to. And. as someone who was shooting season two, it’s something that I look forward to every day of being able to put on my costume and do the whole nine as someone who has a theater background. The world building is something that is incredibly important to being able to to characterize myself and really step into this character and play it fully. I think all of those pieces and details are so important. So I was really excited. I’m still very excited to sort of have that stuff. It grounds me as an actor and helps me do my job better. I am in awe of the team that we have and they really make it very easy for us to step into these characters and do them justice the way we have so far.

Who Plays Nyota Uhura On Star Trek: Strange New Worlds?

Nyota Uhura on Strange New Worlds

In the "Star Trek" timeline, few space-faring females stand quite as tall as Nyota Uhura . The Kenyan-born communications officer is one of the series' most iconic characters and one of the best examples of how "Star Trek" shattered the social norms of its time. When the original series aired in the late 1960s, TV audiences were not entirely used to seeing Black women portrayed with as much competence and skill as Uhura (originally played by Nichelle Nichols). The character is a genius, a prodigy of languages, a high-ranking Federation officer and ship commander, and one-half of one of the first interracial kisses to ever air on television (via CNN ).

That legacy remains strong even now, over half a century after Uhura and "Star Trek" initially debuted. Thanks to "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds," which tells the story of the USS Enterprise crew before James T. Kirk (William Shatner) took command, a whole new generation is being introduced to Uhura. More specifically, they're being introduced to Uhura as portrayed by actor Celia Rose Gooding. While this is the first time that many "Star Trek" fans have been introduced to Gooding, "Strange New Worlds" is far from her only influential role.

Celia Rose Gooding is an award-winning thespian

If you haven't heard of Celia Rose Gooding before now, then we won't blame you. She hasn't been acting quite as long as others. However, Gooding has accomplished quite a lot, possibly because the talent is in her blood. Her mother is Tony Award-winning actor LaChanze, who identified Gooding's talent from a very young age (via Playbill ). As a child, Gooding grew up seeing her mother succeed in theater, even helping her as a reader for auditions at times. This, in no small way, prepared Gooding for her own theater career, where she has made swift progress.

Aside from "Strange New Worlds," Gooding is likely best known for her role in the Broadway play "Jagged Little Pill," where she plays Frankie Healy, the adopted Black bisexual daughter of a white family. In 2021, "Jagged Little Pill" won a Grammy for best musical theater album (via IMDb ), making it Gooding's first award as a professional actor. That's a strong start if ever there was one.

Now that this star has made a trek over to the strange new world of television, however, we look forward to seeing what Celia Rose Gooding can accomplish when she's offstage and on-screen. Who knows? She just might win an Emmy as her second award.

Strange New Worlds is finally fixing the most neglected character in Star Trek canon

Uhura was a super talented linguist in The Original Series . But now, her skills will finally be showcased.

uhura star trek strange new worlds earrings

Uhura is the MVP of the classic Enterprise. But, in the 1960s Star Trek: The Original Series, you might not have known. Although Nichelle Nichols’ character created a pioneering moment for Black representation on mainstream TV, she was often frustrated that Uhura’s role wasn’t bigger. Now, in a new clip from Strange New Worlds , Celia Rose Gooding’s new Uhura is here to set the record straight.

Uhura’s origin story revealed

In a newly released clip from Paramount+ , we learn that Strange New Worlds will tell the origin story of Nyota Uhura. While it’s true we saw Zoe Saldaña’s Uhura at the beginning of her career in the 2009 Star Trek reboot, that version of the character is technically from the alternate Kelvin Universe. Celia Rose Gooding’s Uhura is from the Prime Universe, meaning Strange New Worlds is showing us what led to Uhura’s role in TOS .

Nichelle Nichols in her role as communications officer Lt. Uhura on the TV series Star Trek.

Nichelle Nichols in Star Trek: The Original Series.

How TOS short-changed Uhura

As revealed in the documentary Woman In Motion (as well as her memoir, Beyond Uhura ) Nichelle Nichols got pretty sick of saying “hailing frequencies open” over and over again on the classic Star Trek . Although Roddenberry had imagined her character as the lead linguist and communications officer on the Enterprise , most of that canon exists offscreen. Like George Takei, Walter Koenig, and James Doohan, Nichols was essentially a supporting cast member. And after seeing the various changes made as scripts were developed, Nichols often felt short-changed. In William Shatner’s memoir, Star Trek Memories , she said :

“I’d get the first draft, the white pages, and see what Uhura had to do this week, and maybe it was a halfway-decent scene or two, sometimes more, and then invariably the next draft would come in on blue pages and I’d find that Uhura’s presence in the show had been cut way down...it finally got to the point where I had really had it. I mean, I just decided that I don’t even need to read the f**king script! I mean I know how to say, ‘hailing frequencies open.’”

The J.J. Abrams films did a bit to try and build up Uhura’s actual presence as part of the crew, but in three movies of that continuity, there was only so much space for Saldaña’s Uhura.

Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding) sets Captain Pike straight about her language skills.

Strange New Worlds is finally giving Uhura her due

In the new Strange New Worlds clip, we see Uhura’s first moments on the USS Enterprise. We also see Captain Pike erroneously thinking she speaks “12 languages.” She quickly corrects him, saying it’s actually “37.”

This is a pretty big deal. Although Uhura’s presence in The Original Series was important for representation, her character was tragically underdeveloped. Her skill and importance to the crew was implied in The Original Series more than it was depicted. The feature films did a bit to mitigate this sense of tokenism, but even in The Undiscovered Country , Uhura was depicted looking up Klingon phrases on the fly, which makes no sense for an expert linguist.

In the new clip, Spock (Ethan Peck) says to Uhura, “Starfleet would be fortunate to have an officer like you.” This doesn’t mean that Spock and Uhura will become a couple like they did in the Kelvinverse, but it does connect to a relationship that Spock and Uhura had in The Original Series . In several episodes, including “The Man Trap” and “Charlie X,” it was clear that of all the people on the Enterprise , Spock often deferred to Uhura.

And now, in Strange New Worlds , it looks like we’re finally going to see why. If this new Trek delivers on its promise, Uhura could end up being an even bigger deal than Spock, which will hopefully raise more than a few eyebrows.

Strange New Worlds Season 3 Director Becomes A Star Trek Redshirt In The Best Way

  • Director Jordan Canning shares a redshirt moment on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds set with Rebecca Romijn and Ethan Peck.
  • Exciting news for fans as Star Trek: Strange New Worlds receives a renewal for season 4 from Paramount+.
  • Jordan Canning's directorial work on Strange New Worlds includes episodes in seasons 2 and 3, showcasing her talent.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds director Jordan Canning jokingly became one of Star Trek 's infamous "redshirts" in a behind-the-scenes photo from season 3. Strange New Worlds season 3 is nearing the end of its production in Toronto, with Canning directing episode 8 of the hit Paramount+ show's third season. Excitingly, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has received a season 4 renewal from Paramount+, assuring even more voyages aboard the Starship Enterprise.

On her Instagram, Jordan Canning (@jjcanning) shared a behind-the-scenes photo of herself from Star Trek: Strange New Worlds ' USS Enterprise set between Rebecca Romijn, who plays Lt. Commander Una Chin-Riley AKA Number One, and Ethan Peck, who plays Science Officer Lt. Spock. Canning joked in her caption, "Always happy to be the redshirt between these two." Check out her post below:

Jordan Canning also directs Star Trek: Strange New World s season 3, episode 2, and she helmed the Vulcan comedy of manners, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2, episode 5, "Charades."

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3 - Everything We Know

What is a redshirt in star trek, lt. hemmer is strange new worlds' most tragic redshirt..

A "redshirt" became infamous in Star Trek: The Original Series . The term refers to the ill-fated, red uniform-wearing security officers of the Starship Enterprise who were known for beaming down to a planet with Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) only to be killed horribly by whatever monster of the week the Starfleet Officers faced. Many redshirts had names and ranks, but their most common trait was they were disposable background characters who fueled the plot and suspense of that week's Star Trek episode . Star Trek: Strange New Worlds nodded to TOS' redshirts with the death of Lt. Hemmer (Bruce Horak) in season 1, episode 9, "All Those Who Wander."

Hemmer's demise was in contrast to most redshirts who usually died haplessly on Star Trek: The Original Series .

However, Hemmer died a noble death in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds , sacrificing himself to the Gorn to save his friends and crew mates. Hemmer's demise was in contrast to most redshirts who usually died haplessly on Star Trek: The Original Series . Considering many of Strange New Worlds ' core characters like Lt. La'an Noonien-Singh (Christina Chong), Lt. Erica Ortegas (Melissa Navia), Ensign Nyota Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding), and Commander Pelia (Carol Kane) wear red shirts, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds isn't as bloodthirsty with their redshirts as Star Trek: The Original Series.

Screen Rant

Kirk’s starship enterprise returns in star trek: discovery - with a big twist.

The Starship Enterprise makes a shocking return in Star Trek: Discovery season 5, but it's a version that hasn't been seen since TOS season 2.

Warning: SPOILERS for Star Trek: Discovery Season 5, Episode 5 - "Mirrors"

  • The Mirror Universe's ISS Enterprise, last seen in Star Trek: The Original Series' "Mirror, Mirror," makes a shocking return in Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 5.
  • Star Trek: Discovery filmed scenes on the USS Enterprise set of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.
  • The ISS Enterprise now exists in the 32nd century, offering a new glimpse into the alternate reality of the Mirror Universe.

Captain James T. Kirk's (William Shatner) Starship Enterprise makes a shocking return in Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 5, but with a jaw-dropping twist - it's the ISS Enterprise from Star Trek: The Original Series ' "Mirror, Mirror"! Written by Johanna Lee & Carlos Cisco and directed by Jen McGowan, Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 5, "Mirrors," sees Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and Cleveland Booker (David Ajala) enter interdimensional space to pursue Moll (Eve Harlow) and L'ak (Elias Toufexis) and the next clue to the Progenitors' ancient treasure. What Burnham and Book never expected to find was the Mirror Universe's derelict ISS Enterprise.

Star Trek: Discovery picked up the mantle of the Mirror Universe from Star Trek: The Original Series , Star Trek: Deep Space Nine , and Star Trek; Enterprise. Discovery 's season 1's game-changing Mirror Universe arc introduced Emperor Philippa Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh), who would enter Star Trek 's Prime Universe and is now headlining Paramount+'s upcoming Star Trek: Section 31 movie. Star Trek: Discovery deepened the saga of the Mirror Universe, but the alternate reality's final appearance was in Star Trek: Discovery season 3. Thanks to Star Trek 's Temporal Wars , it's now impossible for the Prime and Mirror Universes to cross over in Star Trek: Discovery 's 32nd century.

Individuals who both time travel and cross from Star Trek' s Prime and Mirror Universes suffer a lethal medical condition, such as what happened to Emperor Georgiou.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Returning Cast & New Character Guide

Star trek: discovery brings back kirk’s mirror universe starship enterprise, the iss enterprise last appeared in star trek: the original series' "mirror, mirror".

The Mirror Universe's ISS Enterprise in Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 5 is the same Constitution Class starship from Star Trek: The Original Series season 2, episode 4, "Mirror, Mirror," which was the ISS Enterprise's only prior canonical appearance. The ISS Enterprise was trapped in interdimensional space and abandoned by its crew, who were refugees and freedom fighters attempting to flee the Mirror Universe for Star Trek 's Prime Universe in the 24th century. As Captain Burnham later learned, the refugees made it to the Prime Universe, and one scientist even became a Starfleet Admiral.

In Star Trek: Enterprise season 4's "In A Mirror, Darkly", the 22nd-century Terran Empire gained control of the Constitution Class USS Defiant, which crossed over and time traveled from the 23rd-century Prime Universe.

In Star Trek: The Original Series ' "Mirror, Mirror", the ISS Enterprise was commanded by Captain James T. Kirk who assassinated its prior Captain, Christopher Pike (Jeffrey Hunter). "Mirror, Mirror" saw the Prime Universe's Kirk, Lt. Uhura (Nichelle Nichols), Dr. Leonard McCoy (DeForest Kelley), and Scotty (James Doohan) switch places with their Mirror counterparts due to a transporter accident during an ion storm. Before switching back, Prime Kirk planted a seed with the goateed Mirror Spock (Leonard Nimoy) to take control of the Terran Empire and institute reforms to prevent the inevitable destruction of the Empire.

Mirror Spock's reforms were successful but ultimately weakened the Terran Empire, which was conquered by the Klingon-Cardassian Alliance, as seen in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.

Star Trek: Discovery Filmed Season 5’s Enterprise On Strange New Worlds’ Set

Star trek: strange new worlds was on hiatus after season 2..

Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 5, "Mirrors", was filmed on the USS Enterprise set of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds . When Discovery season 5 was in production in late 2022, Strange New Worlds was on hiatus after completing season 2 filming in June . ( Strange New Worlds wouldn't begin season 3 production until December 2023.) Sonequa Martin-Green, David Ajala, Eve Harlow, and Elias Toufexis shot on Strange New Worlds ' sets, which are located in Toronto where Star Trek: Discovery also filmed.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 is in production, and the series has been renewed for season 4.

Star Trek: Discovery redressed Strange New Worlds ' USS Enterprise set to become the ISS Enterprise. Scenes were filmed on the Enterprise's bridge, hallways, and medical bay. Interestingly, by using Strange New Worlds ' Enterprise set, which depicts the USS Enterprise before Captain Kirk assumes command, Star Trek: Discovery season 5 establishes that the ISS Enterprise, which crossed into the Prime Universe decades after Star Trek: The Original Series , is the same ship as in "Mirror, Mirror" despite the very different interiors.

Star Trek: Enterprise recreated the sets of Star Trek: The Original Series ' USS Enterprise for the interiors of the USS Defiant.

What Happens To Mirror Universe’s Enterprise In Star Trek: Discovery?

The 32nd century just got another 23rd-century starship.

Captain Burnham and Cleveland Booker piloted the ISS Enterprise out of interdimensional space and into Star Trek 's Prime Universe with the help of the USS Discovery. Afterward, Burnham assigned Lt. Commanders Kayla Detmer (Emily Coutts) and Joann Owosekun (Oyin Oladejo) to fly the ISS Enterprise to Federation headquarters, so that the Mirror Universe's starship could be put into "storage". However, there are now fascinating ramifications to the ISS Enterprise existing in Star Trek: Discovery 's 32nd century .

Amazingly, the ISS Enterprise is also now the second 23rd-century starship in 3191 along with the USS Discovery itself.

Although the ISS Enterprise is obsolete by 32nd-century standards, it's still a bonanza of Mirror Universe technology that the United Federation of Planets has now acquired . This would certainly be of interest to Dr. Kovich (David Cronenberg). The 23rd-century ISS Enterprise is a window not just to 900 years ago, but also to the alternate reality, especially since the Mirror Universe is now sealed off permanently from the Federation. Amazingly, the ISS Enterprise is also now the second 23rd-century starship in 3191 along with the USS Discovery itself. Perhaps the ISS Enterprise will reappear and play a role in the second half of Star Trek: Discovery season 5.

Nichelle Nichols, Lt. Uhura On 'Star Trek,' Has Died At 89

uhura star trek strange new worlds earrings

Nichelle Nichols, who broke barriers for Black women in Hollywood when she played communications officer Lt. Uhura on the original "Star Trek" television series, has died at the age of 89.

Her son Kyle Johnson said Nichols died Saturday in Silver City, New Mexico.

"Last night, my mother, Nichelle Nichols, succumbed to natural causes and passed away. Her light however, like the ancient galaxies now being seen for the first time, will remain for us and future generations to enjoy, learn from, and draw inspiration," Johnson wrote on her official Facebook page Sunday. "Hers was a life well lived and as such a model for us all."

Her role in the 1966-69 series as Lt. Uhura earned Nichols a lifelong position of honor with the series' rabid fans, known as Trekkers and Trekkies. It also earned her accolades for breaking stereotypes that had limited Black women to acting roles as servants and included an interracial onscreen kiss with co-star William Shatner that was unheard of at the time.

"I shall have more to say about the trailblazing, incomparable Nichelle Nichols, who shared the bridge with us as Lt. Uhura of the USS Enterprise, and who passed today at age 89," George Takei wrote on Twitter. "For today, my heart is heavy, my eyes shining like the stars you now rest among, my dearest friend."

Takei played Sulu in the original "Star Trek" series alongside Nichols. But her impact was felt beyond her immediate co-stars, and many others in the "Star Trek" world also tweeted their condolences.

Celia Rose Gooding, who currently plays Uhura in "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds," wrote on Twitter that Nichols "made room for so many of us. She was the reminder that not only can we reach the stars, but our influence is essential to their survival. Forget shaking the table, she built it."

"Star Trek: Voyager" alum Kate Mulgrew tweeted, "Nichelle Nichols was The First. She was a trailblazer who navigated a very challenging trail with grit, grace, and a gorgeous fire we are not likely to see again."

Like other original cast members, Nichols also appeared in six big-screen spinoffs starting in 1979 with "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" and frequented "Star Trek" fan conventions. She also served for many years as a NASA recruiter, helping bring minorities and women into the astronaut corps.

More recently, she had a recurring role on television's "Heroes," playing the great-aunt of a young boy with mystical powers.

The original "Star Trek" premiered on NBC on Sept. 8, 1966. Its multicultural, multiracial cast was creator Gene Roddenberry's message to viewers that in the far-off future — the 23rd century — human diversity would be fully accepted.

"I think many people took it into their hearts ... that what was being said on TV at that time was a reason to celebrate," Nichols said in 1992 when a "Star Trek" exhibit was on view at the Smithsonian Institution.

She often recalled how Martin Luther King Jr. was a fan of the show and praised her role. She met him at a civil rights gathering in 1967, at a time when she had decided not to return for the show's second season.

"When I told him I was going to miss my co-stars and I was leaving the show, he became very serious and said, 'You cannot do that,'" she told The Tulsa (Okla.) World in a 2008 interview.

"'You've changed the face of television forever, and therefore, you've changed the minds of people,'" she said the civil rights leader told her.

"That foresight Dr. King had was a lightning bolt in my life," Nichols said.

During the show's third season, Nichols' character and Shatner's Capt. James Kirk shared what was described as the first interracial kiss to be broadcast on a U.S. television series. In the episode, "Plato's Stepchildren," their characters, who always maintained a platonic relationship, were forced into the kiss by aliens who were controlling their actions.

The kiss "suggested that there was a future where these issues were not such a big deal," Eric Deggans, a television critic for National Public Radio, told The Associated Press in 2018. "The characters themselves were not freaking out because a Black woman was kissing a white man ... In this utopian-like future, we solved this issue. We're beyond it. That was a wonderful message to send."

Worried about reaction from Southern television stations, showrunners wanted to film a second take of the scene where the kiss happened off-screen. But Nichols said in her book, "Beyond Uhura: Star Trek and Other Memories," that she and Shatner deliberately flubbed lines to force the original take to be used.

Despite concerns, the episode aired without blowback. In fact, it got the most "fan mail that Paramount had ever gotten on 'Star Trek' for one episode," Nichols said in a 2010 interview with the Archive of American Television.

Born Grace Dell Nichols in Robbins, Illinois, Nichols hated being called "Gracie," which everyone insisted on, she said in the 2010 interview. When she was a teen her mother told her she had wanted to name her Michelle, but thought she ought to have alliterative initials like Marilyn Monroe, whom Nichols loved. Hence, "Nichelle."

Nichols first worked professionally as a singer and dancer in Chicago at age 14, moving on to New York nightclubs and working for a time with the Duke Ellington and Lionel Hampton bands before coming to Hollywood for her film debut in 1959's "Porgy and Bess," the first of several small film and TV roles that led up to her "Star Trek" stardom.

Nichols was known as being unafraid to stand up to Shatner on the set when others complained that he was stealing scenes and camera time. They later learned she had a strong supporter in the show's creator.

In her 1994 book, "Beyond Uhura," she said she met Roddenberry when she guest starred on his show "The Lieutenant," and the two had an affair a couple of years before "Star Trek" began. The two remained lifelong close friends.

Another fan of Nichols and the show was future astronaut Mae Jemison, who became the first black woman in space when she flew aboard the shuttle Endeavour in 1992.

In an AP interview before her flight, Jemison said she watched Nichols on "Star Trek" all the time, adding she loved the show. Jemison eventually got to meet Nichols.

Nichols was a regular at "Star Trek" conventions and events into her 80s, but her schedule became limited starting in 2018 when her son announced that she was suffering from advanced dementia.

2024 Emmy Predictions: Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series

uhura star trek strange new worlds earrings

Weekly Commentary (Updated: April 25, 2024) : With her captivating portrayal of Princess Diana in the sixth and final season of Netflix’s “The Crown,” Australian actress Elizabeth Debicki has earned universal acclaim and a trifecta of major televised awards, including Golden Globes, Critics Choice, and Screen Actors Guild honors. As the awards season shifts towards the Emmys, Debicki’s undefeated streak positions her as an undisputed frontrunner, potentially poised to claim her first Emmy trophy amid widespread industry admiration.

Debicki faces competition from her co-star Lesley Manville, who delivered a compelling performance as Princess Margaret, and Christine Baranski, the formidable matriarch in HBO/Max’s “The Gilded Age.” Nonetheless, Debicki is leading the pack. Her acclaimed work in “The Crown” not only captivated audiences, amid a mixed reaction for the final season, but it also earned her first Emmy nom for the series’ fifth season last year. Despite losing to Jennifer Coolidge’s scene-stealing role in “The White Lotus,” Debicki’s rising star may be too bright to ignore.

The race is further intensified by a strong lineup from Apple’s “The Morning Show,” featuring Greta Lee, Nicole Beharie, Julianna Margulies, Holland Taylor, and Karen Pittman—all of whom have significant fan bases. The crowded field increases the likelihood of vote-splitting, potentially benefiting other potential nominees and contenders.

As the first phase of Emmy campaigning kicks off, attention is focused on “The Crown” and “The Morning Show” potentially dominating the field. Yet, there’s room for surprises. “The Gilded Age” has more potential nominees such as Cynthia Nixon and Audra McDonald, and industry buzz suggests that Leslie Uggams, fresh off her acclaimed role in the Oscar-winning “American Fiction,” could gain traction for Prime Video’s “Fallout.” Additionally, former Emmy darlings like Archie Panjabi from Apple’s “Hijacks” and standouts from Netflix’s “3 Body Problem,” such as Rosalind Chao and Eiza González, might also make an unexpected splash.

Other genre shows could also attract attention, including young standout Celia Rose Gooding as Nyota Uhura in Paramount’s “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” and Sophia Di Martino, who, along with her co-star Tom Hiddleston, could become favorites for their roles in Disney/Marvel’s superhero series “Loki.”
