The UK Visit Visa, also called the Standard Visitor Visa, allows you to stay in the UK temporarily to partake in different activities. If you hold a Standard Visitor Visa or a Marriage Visitor Visa, it will also serve as a Transit Visa if you need to change flights or pass through the UK border control on your way to another country.

The UK Study Visit Visa will allow you to partake in any academic-related activity not exceeding 6 months. You can:

• Study at an accredited institution, which must not be an academy or state-funded school.
• Do a short piece of research that’s relevant to your course overseas
• Do an ‘elective’ or an optional additional placement if you’re studying medicine, veterinary medicine and science, nursing, midwifery or dentistry.
• Do an unpaid clinical attachment if you’re a graduate of a medical, dental or nursing school.
• Sit an entrance exam, retake an exam or course module, or do a PhD oral exam.
• Take the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) test or the Professional and Linguistic Assessment Board (PLAB) test.

If you intend to study at an accredited institution, you must already be enrolled at the institution before you can apply for the visa.

If you’re taking an elective course, you must meet the following requirements:

• Be at least 16 years old
• Be already enrolled on a course overseas equivalent to a UK degree.
• Be required to take an elective at a UK higher education institution as part of your course.
• Provide written confirmation from the UK institution that you will not be treating patients or being paid for the elective.

You must not treat patients if you’re visiting to participate in an unpaid clinical attachment or dental observer post. You must also provide written confirmation of your attachment from the UK institution and that you’ve not done such a program in the UK before.

Furthermore, if you’re to take the OSCE or PLAB test, you must provide the following documents:

• A letter from the Nursing and Midwifery Council confirming your OSCE test registration.
• A letter from the General Medical Council confirming your PLAB test registration.

Your total stay in the UK can be up to 18 months. First, you will be allowed to extend your visa for an additional 6 months if you do not pass the PLAB test. Then, if you pass, you can apply to stay in the UK for an unpaid clinical attachment or dental observer post.

This visa category applies to academic professionals, senior doctors or dentists, and researchers who intend to take up unpaid activities in their field.

If you are a lecturer or professor at an academic institution, you can do any of the following:

• Carry out your own research during a sabbatical

As a visiting academic, you can either apply for a visa lasting 12 months or for one lasting 6 months and extend your stay for an additional 6 months while in the UK. However, for longer stays, you must meet further requirements and submit additional documents.

You can enter the UK from Pakistan for sightseeing or leisure purposes. If you are touring in a group, each tour member must apply for the Standard Visitor Visa.

When applying, you need to submit proof of your reason for travelling with documents such as your travel itinerary, hotel reservations, etc.

You can visit the UK to get treatment at a private hospital or medical facility if you meet the following requirements:

• You can prove that you have a medical condition that needs private consultation or treatment in the UK.

• You are not a danger to public health if you have an infectious disease, such as leprosy.

The Child Visitor Visa allows children below 18 to enter the UK for holidays, tourism, medical treatment, excursions, or to visit friends and family. The requirements for this visa vary depending on if the child is travelling with or without an adult.

Children travelling alone must provide written consent from their parent or guardian authorising them to travel to the UK. They’ll also need to provide proof that they have suitable accommodation throughout their stay, including:

• The name and date of birth of their host

United Kingdom is one of the place which is always on the priority and bucket travel list of every traveler, but honestly speaking getting a UK visa is not a piece of cake for everyone. UK gives a “Standard Visitor Visa” to those who want to visit the UK for various purposes like

• Family visits
• Medical treatment
• Business visits etc

These Standard Visitor Visas have following validity options:

In General, these visas allow for multiple entries, but each visit is limited to a maximum stay of 180 days. Nevertheless, there may be cases where single-entry visas or visas with reduced validity and duration are granted under special circumstances.

Which validity option should you apply for?

There is no strict guideline for selecting a validity option. Nevertheless, it is advisable to begin with a Six-month visa and progress to longer-term visa for subsequent visits if needed. However, obtaining a longer-term visa often requires demonstrating a compelling reason for frequent visits to the UK.

Providing passport copies, CNIC copies, job letters or other financial documents of relatives in Pakistan may not be helpful in establishing family ties, as these documents are considered “inadmissible” under UK immigration laws. Therefore, it is advisable to rely solely on an FRC to demonstrate family ties to Pakistan.

Demonstrating financial assets in Pakistan can also be helpful in establishing strong ties to home country. It’s not just the amount of money in the bank account that matters, but the length of time the account has been created, which indicates stability in the home country. Similarly, properties in the home country can also be presented as evidence to establish ties to the home country.

Demonstrating Professional stability is also crucial in showing ties to Pakistan. Similar to financial ties, the length of time spent in the same job is important for immigration officials to evaluate the stability of applicant’s ties to their home country. Individuals who have been employed by the organizations for the extended period of time are generally seen as more stable compared to those who are newly employed or who frequently switch their jobs.

Socio-professional ties can also assist in establishing strong ties to the home country. Individuals in certain profession can assure by providing a copy of the relevant membership/enrollment (For example for doctors it’s the PMDC membership, for businessmen it’s the Chamber of Commerce membership, for lawyers it’s the Bar Council membership, for engineers its PEC etc.)

Strong travel history is also a great indicator of strong ties to home country. They look it from the view that this person visited certain countries, and then came back to his home country. Therefore, it appears that he is stable in his home country and is not a potential illegal immigrant. Visits to countries like USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand give more benefit than rest of the countries. Also, they are mainly interested to evaluate your travel history for last five years, as over the years circumstances can change for any person.

Source of funds is not clear:

You should give documentary evidence for all the money in your accounts. It can be salary slips in case of salary. It can be tax returns and other business/company related documents for businessmen and self-employed people. It can be a gift deed if someone gifted you money. Then for example you sold a car and deposited the money into your account, then it will be a letter of explanation along with any receipts or copies of cheques etc.

A lot of people do the mistake of stating excess number of days for stay in the UK and/or showing that they will be staying at an expensive hotel. Always make a sensible itinerary. For example, if an applicant has a salary of Rs 50,000, but they show that they will be spending Rs 500,000 for their trip to the UK. It may not sound reasonable to the visa officer that a person will spend ten times more than their salary on a holiday.

Purpose of visit is vague:

Visa officers always like those applicants who have a clear purpose of visit, instead of those who have dual purposes and/or generic reasons to visit the UK. A generic reason will indicate all you want from your application is a UK visa, on the contrary, a specific reason will show a genuine need for a visit to the UK.

It is recommended that your reason should be like “I will be staying in London for seven days and during that time I will visit major touristic places in and around London. Or, “The purpose of my visit is to see my sister and her children for ten days, I will be spending most of my time with my sister and her family as I have not seen them in two years”.

Do not write vague reasons to visit like “I want to go to London, if I get a visa I may also go to Scotland”. Or, “I will meet my sister in Manchester, however I may stay in a hotel in London”.

There is another misconception that a refusal from UK or another country is something very negative for future travel. This is again not true. Refusals are very common and as soon you meet their criteria they will issue you a visa regardless of how many refusals you have had in the past. Only exception is a refusal on the basis of misrepresentation or fraud.

Someone I know gave certain documents and they got the visa, I will also give exactly the same documents and I will get the visa. This is again not true, every application is different. Something may work for somebody, however, it will not work for everyone.

Someone applied for a visa last year with these documents, so I need all the same documents to apply. No, rules on what documents are required and not required are always changing. Always consult the official website before applying.

Final advice, do not trust any person, agent, or lawyer with your application. It is your application, you know the best and most about it. Even if you use someone’s services, do not blindly trust them and check everything carefully yourself.
