It's down to you to decide which magical worlds you want to explore first. Take your pick from Bedrock, Dynamite Gulch, Cartoon Junction, Gotham City, Metropolis and Warner Bros. Plaza or follow your heart's instinct (or the map) to find the best route.

Which one will you explore first? Each land is decked out and styled right down to the T, fitted with rides and outlets of the same theme. Unless you got yourself a sweet Flash Pass, many popular rides might have short queues, so remember to follow queuing rules, so everyone has a fabulous day!

Feeling peckish? You can either grab and go or fill up on ‘food fuel’ at one of the nine dining outlets peppered across the park. Slurps up with a refreshing slushy or sorbet from Yogi Bear and Boo Boo ice cream and for those with a raging appetite - there’s no better place than a dino-sized burger at Bronto Burgers and Ribs!

Warner Brothers World Abu Dhabi (WB World Abu Dhabi) opened in 2018 and is the region’s largest entirely indoor theme park (it just lost the title as the largest indoor theme park in the world to Chimelong Spaceship, China ( 1 ) .

The park covers 1.65 million square feet and is split into six different lands or “zones”, which pay homage to a variety of Warner Brothers’ best-loved characters and franchises, including Batman, Scooby Doo, Tom and Jerry and yes, The Flintstones.

The park is set to expand with an exciting new Harry Potter zone, which will be another reason to visit this fun and friendly one-of-a-kind attraction that’s sure to make you smile.

Situated on Yas Island, Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi is just a stone’s throw from Yas Mall, Ferrari World and the Yas Marina Circuit. It is also within walking distance of Yas Waterworld. You are less than a 10-minute drive from Abu Dhabi International Airport (AUH) and about 30 minutes from downtown Abu Dhabi.

• From Abu Dhabi Central Bus Station (Al Wadha bus station), you can take the 102 bus to Yas Island, AED 4, allowing 50 minutes, and you’ll need a Hafilat bus card . Alternatively, a taxi from central Abu Dhabi will cost around AED 60 and takes around 30 minutes.

What is there to do at Warner Brothers World Abu Dhabi?

The theme park is split into six sections. Each zone includes shops, places to eat and drink and other activities as well as rides.

The central plaza area is set up like a town square, with shops and cafes flanking an open space with fountains and stage areas. This forms the heart of the theme park and is where many of the shows happen.

A real highlight is the ‘Magic of Film’ show, which uses video screens, sound effects and light projections to really capture the magic of cinema and features many of Warner Brothers’ most famous films. You can capture the show just before opening time – making it well worth your while to get in before the gates officially open.

To the right of the plaza are the more child-friendly zones; these are Bedrock, Dynamite Gulch and Cartoon Junction. Here you will find the following rides:

• The Flintstones Bedrock River Adventure – Join Fred and Wilma as they go about their day on this invigorating log-flume ride – a chance you’ll get wet but not drenched!
• Fast and Furry-ous – Dip into canyons and curve around mountains on this exciting roller-coaster.
• The Jetsons Cosmic Orbitor – Take a spin in your very own spacecraft on this family-friendly ride.
• Marvin the Martian Crater Crashers – A cosmic take on bumper cars.
• Tom & Jerry Swiss Cheese Spin – An exhilarating, adrenaline-boosting rollercoaster that sees Tom chasing Jerry!
• Scooby-Doo: The Museum of Mysteries – Join Scooby and the gang as they gather clues in this mysterious family-friendly ride.
• Cartoon Junction Carousel – A gentle ride featuring all of your favourite Loony Toon and Hanna-Barbera characters.
• Daffy Jet-Propelled Pogo Stick – Bounce up and down until you’re dizzy on this vertical jump tower.
• Tweety Wild Wockets – An aerial carousel ride for kids.
• Ani-Mayhem – Scan those bar codes as you whizz through the ACME delivery circuit.

There is also a soft play area at the Acme Factory for toddlers, as well as spiral net climbs, suspended rope bridges, crawl tubes and tunnel mazes for older children.

To the left of the Plaza is the more grown-up superhero zone. The two distinct areas mimic the streets of Gotham City and an area of Metropolis.

Most of the bigger, scarier rides are located in the superhero zone. Rides and attractions include:

• The Batman Knight Flight – A high-speed, high-speed ride through the dark skies of Gotham.
• Scarecrow Scare Raid – A swirling corkscrew that twists and turns high above the ground.
• The Riddler Revolution – A rocking, spinning rollercoaster ride.

• The Joker Funhouse – A maze of physical and mental challenges designed by Batman’s nemesis.
• Rogues Gallery Games – Roll up and try your luck at the gallery of fairground games in the heart of Gotham City.
• Justice League: Warworld Attacks – Join Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman and the rest of the crew in a face-off with their greatest enemies on this thrilling and immersive 3D ride.
• Green Lantern: Galactic Odyssey – Hal Jordan leads you to stunning new worlds on this stunning 4D flying theatre experience with a sting in its tail!
• Superman 360: Battle for Metropolis – Take your place at the centre of an epic battle to determine the fate of Metropolis.
• Teen Titans Training Academy – Could you be the world’s next superhero? Make your way along zip coasters, net climbs and rope bridges to find out if you’ve got what it takes.

Numerous shows take place throughout the day and there are plenty of chances to meet and greet your favourite characters across the park. Show times change depending on the day and season but are clearly displayed on electronic screens throughout the park.

There are professional photographers on site to take pictures of you with your favourite characters. These can be purchased at the exit to the park. You are allowed to take your own photos inside the park, but you should avoid taking pictures of people that you don’t know without their consent.

There are a variety of eateries throughout the park serving everything from fast food to sit-down a la carte dinners.

• Big Belly Burger is a popular choice in the Metropolis area. This outlet specialises in burgers, hotdogs and waffles. There is also a small snack shack in the Metropolis area selling hot and cold drinks, pop corn and ice creams.
• Another fantastic burger option can be found at the Bronto Burger and Ribs restaurant in Bedrock, where the giant ‘Bronco Burger’ is sure to blow you away. Other choices include fried chicken strips and sticky ribs as well as a very tasty falafel burger.
• The Starlight Restaurant in the town square area of the park offers a sophisticated space serving delicious a la carte options with friendly and attentive table service. The menu changes periodically, but main courses have included herb-crusted salmon with puréed spinach and potato gnocchi, lamb chops with potato purée and roasted vegetables and wild mushroom ravioli with asparagus and cheddar cheese.
• La Trattoria , also in the town square offers pizza slices, pasta and salads, whereas the Beverley Hills Boulangerie serves up a variety of sandwiches and delicious cakes and pastries; it’s also the only place in the park where you can find decaffeinated coffee.

In addition to the main restaurants, there are also plenty of places to buy sweets, candy floss, popcorn and ice cream throughout the site.

No season goes without celebration at Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi. There are special events to mark every occasion, from Ramadan to Christmas , Easter to Halloween . If your visit coincides with a special event, it is really worth visiting the theme park for a touch of holiday magic.

In addition to collective annual celebrations, Warner Brothers World can also accommodate birthday parties. These can include appearances from your favourite character. For more information, click here.

In 2022, it was announced( 2 ) that Warner Bros World Abu Dhabi would be adding a Harry Potter-themed land to their existing lineup. No dates have been announced as yet, so you’ll need to stay tuned for this exciting development!

NB despite messaging of “opening soon,” we can’t see Harry Potter opening at WB World Abu Dhabi until at least late 2025 – but we’ll keep you posted.

• Single-day tickets purchased online in advance cost AED 345 for Adults
• AED 250 for Juniors (Anyone under 1.1m in height, excluding children under three who are admitted for free)
• Adult tickets bought at the gate cost 10% more – so it is well worth purchasing your tickets ahead of time, and you’ll get to skip the queues.

Multi-park theme park tickets for Yas Island

Multi-day tickets can also be purchased, combining entry to WB World with either Yas Waterworld, SeaWorld Yas Island or Ferrari World. You have 14 days to use the multip-park passes for Yas Island.

Presently (as of October 2023), the online price for the Yas theme parks is:

• 1 park from AED 345
• 2 parks from AED 475
• 3 parks from AED 575
• 4 parks from AED 675

Note you pay 10% more for buying tickets at the gate; it’s always best to purchase online in advance. Multi-day Yas theme park tickets are valid for 14 days. These can be purchased from any of the theme park websites or we recommend reputable local ticketing agent Platinumlist.

Annual passes are also available for people staying in Abu Dhabi long term, with prices starting at AED 1295 per year (though do look out for Ramadan and Eid special offers!)

See these ticket deals on Viator (a TripAdvisor company with licensed ticket resellers); when transfers are also thrown in, this can often work out cheaper than buying through the venue, but do check!

Another option to consider is using the Go City Explorer Pass . This multi-attraction pass includes all 4 of the Yas theme parks, which you could use as part of a 3, 4, 5 or 7-day pass for Dubai and Abu Dhabi attractions.

Warner Bros World Abu Dhabi is accessible to people with mobility problems and other disabilities. There are accessible toilets and ramps throughout the park.

Some rides and experiences are not suitable for people with specific medical problems or for expectant mothers. Information about ride accessibility is available both in the park and on the Warner Brothers World Abu Dhabi website.

• The park is open from 11:00 am daily.
• Closing times vary depending on local holidays, but you can normally expect the park to stay open until 7:00 pm on weekdays and 8:00 pm at weekends.

Unlike other religious and political buildings in Abu Dhabi, where a strict dress code is enforced, theme parks are almost anything goes – within moderation! Always keep the Abu Dhabi dress code in mind when it comes to anything overtly showing too much skin.

• We would suggest comfortably dressing in jeans/trousers and t-shirts or respectable-length shorts and t-shirts. None of the rides are overly strenuous, and whilst there is one water ride, you’d be unlucky to get totally drenched – all the water action is saved for next door at Yas Waterworld .
• We’ve never noticed the air conditioning being particularly fierce (as it can be in some Abu Dhabi indoor venues ), but you wouldn’t be out of place with some sort of cardigan or pullover.
• Always wear comfortable theme park footwear , as there’s a lot of walking; even indoors, you’ll get those steps! You can wear sandals/flip-flops but will be asked to remove such footwear on some rides; you are better off with trainers for all-day comfort. You’ll need closed-toe shoes on if you’re looking to undertake Teen Titans (which includes climbing and ropes).
• If kids want to dress up in their favourite characters’ costumes, that’s fine. In fact on some special days they even give away free superhero capes for the kiddos.
• We would avoid too much dangling jewellery and accessories as there will be many rides you’ll be asked to remove these. Ladies’ abayas are fine, but you’ll be asked to secure them on some rides.

The closest hotels are The WB Hotel, Curio Collection By Hilton and the DoubleTree by Hilton Residences , both within walking distance of the park. The WB Hotel is the world’s first Warner Brothers-themed hotel where you can get the full character experience.

Rooms are decorated with a Warner Brothers twist, and Bugs Bunny and other Looney Tune favourites will join you for breakfast, lunch and dinner in the Sidekicks Restaurant. There is a large outdoor pool terrace, open-air cinema, a fitness centre, and a spa.

There is also an adults-only rooftop pool and bar area, perfect for when you’ve dropped off the kids at the amazing kids’ club, which offers indoor and outdoor activities, a games hub, a dive-in theatre and a splash pad for the little ones.

Staying anywhere on Yas Island is convenient for the trio of theme parks, and many hotels on Yas Island have deals which include theme park tickets, so it’s well worth comparing deals and inclusions.

Undoubtedly this is one of the world’s leading theme parks, and being entirely indoors, whether it’s a hot or rainy day in Abu Dhabi, its a fabulous family attraction that can be enjoyed year-round.

If this is your first visit and you’re keen to try every ride and attraction and enjoy multiple shows, you could easily spend the whole day in Warner Bros Abu Dhabi – 8 to 9 hours. If you are lucky to visit off-peak when there are no crowds and no queues (try a weekday in school term time – almost guaranteed crowd free most of the day), then you could sufficiently cover everything in 4-5 hours with rest breaks. We would allow around 6 hours as a little bit of queuing is to be expected.

Yes, the entirely indoor theme park can be explored fully in a whole day. The park opens at 11:00 am daily; if you want to try every ride and attraction you could comfortably complete this in 6 to 8 hours (on weekends and public holidays, you may experience queuing)

Theoretically, yes, though you may have to skip some rides or attractions. For first-timers, we believe each park deserves a separate day, but for repeat visitors or those on a tight timeline, you could easily see two in one day if you plan your time strategically and just want a taster of each theme park’s highlights.

The entirety of Warner Bros World Abu Dhabi is indoors. You’ll only be outside walking from your transportation into the building.

At this stage, only the concept has been announced. The construction timeline and opening date are yet to be publicly revealed, so you’ll need to stay tuned for further developments!

Yes, the “Flash Pass” can be purchased separately from your ticket, which gives you priority queuing at many rides. The Flash pass is an extra AED 150 low season, 250 AED in the high season. We would recommend seeing how busy the park is before purchasing a Flash Pass. Early birds can often enjoy queue-free rides for the first couple of hours until it gets busy. If you visit mid-week during local school term times or the peak of summer when a lot of expats are away, you may not need the Flash Pass.

Super cheap deals on Yas Theme Park tickets are hard, if not impossible, to come by. Generally speaking, the theme parks themselves offer the best-value tickets. Look out for Ramadan and Eid sales, such as 4-for-3 ticket deals or combined tickets with other attractions. Ticket reseller Klook sometimes has better pricing than the theme parks .

One of three theme parks on the Yas Island resort, Warner Bros. World opened July 25, 2018. [Here is our opening-day review: Warner Bros. World impresses in its Abu Dhabi debut .] The park features six themed lands, anchored by the Warner Bros. Plaza in the center. Let's start with a walking tour around the park.

There's no need for strategy here, nor for an upcharge line-skipping pass. With moderate to light crowds throughout the year, it's a rare day when you will have to wait more than half an hour for any single ride. Do what you want, when you want to.

The best attraction in Warner Bros. World is Ani-Mayhem, a delightful interactive dark ride set in Acme's research-and-development headquarters.

The hapless manufacturer of all the lame devices ordered by Wile E. Coyote in his hopeless quest to catch the Road Runner needs your help to scan and track its far-flung inventory. The queue is a tour of Acme's Easter egg-laden corporate offices, complete with an awards case filled with cobwebs and desks that have run out of liability waiver forms. ("Acme Factory: Where quality is our #1 dream!")

On board, it's a mix of practical and screen targets, with the 3D imagery here the sharpest I've ever seen on a theme park attraction. Put it all together, Ani-Mayhem is the world's best shooter ride, as well as the top Looney Tunes-themed attraction anywhere.

Green Lantern: Galactic Odyssey - Supposed planetarium show that turns into a Brogent Technologies I-Ride 3D flying theater ride, where we discover that the only thing more powerful than a superhero (or villain) is our collective will. It's a deep statement for a theme park, though camouflaged within one of the more intense flying theater-type rides I've experienced. Height requirement: 43 inches

Justice League: Warworld Attacks - Transformers-style 3D motion base dark ride. Height requirement: 43 inches

Superman 360: Battle for Metropolis - Standing theater show. (There were significant synchronization problems with the 3D projection on this, making it uncomfortable to watch. 3D is an issue throughout this park, with the exception of Ani-Mayhem, but this is by far the worst example.)

Teen Titans Training Academy - Extreme play area with zip coasters, net climbs, rope bridges, wall climbs, and more. Height requirement: 48 inches

Batman: Knight Flight - Forbidden Journey-style robot arm dark ride where you ride aboard Batwing vehicles flying above Gotham City. Height requirement: 47 inches. Maximum height: 6'6"

The Riddler Revolution - Zamperla Disk'O. Height requirement: 47 inches

The Joker Funhouse - Walkthrough a classic carnival funhouse, themed to the Batman villain. Height requirement: 41 inches

Scarecrow Scare Raid - Zamperla Super Air Race. Height requirement: 47 inches

Cartoon Junction

Ani-Mayhem - See above . Height requirement: 35 inches

Scooby Doo: The Museum of Mysteries - A fun, well-decorated trackless dark ride that unravels a classic Scooby-Doo mystery. Yes, the characters don't move, but Scooby-Doo wasn't exactly known for its world-class animation quality, was it? Height requirement: 35 inches.

Tom and Jerry Swiss Cheese Spin - The queue's a walkthrough the house where Tom and Jerry do battle, leading to a Zamperla Twister coaster. Height requirement: 43 inches

Acme Factory - Cartoon Junction's kiddie land features climbing structures, cargo nets and three children's rides: Daffy Jet-Propelled Pogo Stick, Ricochet Racin' with Taz, and Tweety Wild Wockets. Height requirement: 39 inches

Cartoon Junction Carousel - Ride on various Looney Tunes characters in the town square. Height requirement: 32 inches

Dynamite Gulch

Fast and Furry-ous - Intamin Suspended Family Coaster that takes you on a ride underneath one of Wile E. Coyote's out-of-control rockets. The name is the title of the first Roadrunner cartoon. Height requirement: 43 inches

The Jetsons Cosmic Orbiter - Dumbo-style spinner ride. Height requirement: 36 inches

Marvin the Martian Crater Crashers - Bumper cars. Height requirement: 41 inches

The Flintstone Bedrock River Adventure - Flume ride that hits all the familiar story beats from the introduction to the 1960s animated TV series. Height requirement: 41 inches

Where to eat

Warner Bros.' top restaurant is The Starlight, a table service family restaurant located under the giant marquee at the end of Warner Bros. Plaza, serving a variety of international dishes along with character appearances by Bugs Bunny and other Looney Tunes characters.

You can find themed quick-service restaurants in several of the park's other lands, including the Flintstones-themed Bronto Burgers and Ribs, Bo Bibbowski's Ace O' Clubs in Metropolis, and the Hollywood Trattoria on Warner Bros. Plaza.

I will warn that beef in the United Arab Emirates can have an off-putting flavor to some American palates. And you won't find pork anywhere, due to Halal dietary restrictions.

What's next?

In 2025 (or so), Warner Bros. World will add its first non-animated Warner Bros. IP with the opening of a new Harry Potter-themed land. The park will not be able to use the attractions designed by Universal Creative for its Wizarding World of Harry Potter lands, so expect all-new adventures in this land when it debuts.

Thank you so much for this! This park sounds awesome and the fact that crowds are a non factor make it that much better. Glad it's growing with the new HP expansion. One day I'll get to check it out for myself.

When I think back to Warner Bros Movie Workd Australia’s early lineup, this makes me think WB is a little short on viable IP, I remember there being a Batman simulator, a BeetleJuice/Gremlins ride, the Police Academy stunt show, a western area with another stunt show and one of those crazy gravity trick houses themed to “young Einstein”, looney tunes, and the studio tour (Hanna-Barberra/Cartoon network was still independent).

Here we seem to have DC, more DC, looney tunes and HB, with Potter on the way. Is this all the hits WB has these days?

This park looks to be one of the better middle eastern parks, and Yas Island is definitely now the premiere theme park destination in the region with this, Ferrari World, and SeaWorld. I'm surprised Flintstone's made the cut over Cartoon Network characters, which are way more relevant to modern family audiences, but perhaps that's a product of conflicting IP rights deals with IMG Worlds of Adventure.

@Chad H, I'm not exactly sure that BeetleJuice, Gremlins, or Police Academy, much less many other properties, are exactly big in the UAE or Gulf in general. Locals are a big part of the park's demographics...

@JPB1703 Almost certainly - but this park in general seems to be much more about classic/evergreen properties. Not sure any CN shows are evergreen.

@MattR, not saying they should have used those - despite the occasional rumours on BJ2 they’re all stale, but that was three different IP WBMWA had in two experiences (right next to each other), my lament is more about the state of WB, is this all todays WB has to offer in IP?

(Looking at the current WBMWA lineup, which seems to be very DC/Looney Tunes heavy the answer appears to be yes, it’s next big expansion is Wizard of Oz, which whilst evergreen is probably older than the oldest guest in the park, and was an MGM production originally)

My family went exactly a year ago. We first went to IMG in Dubai and were expecting a similar experience with WB, but the latter was far superior. The theming was top-notch, the park was clean and looked brand new, and not many people were there. There aren't big thrill rides with massive footprints, but if you're looking for an immersive, strongly themed experience, this is it. We especially loved Metropolis, Gotham, Bedrock, and the Scoobie Doo house. My boys are teenagers and were practically raised at WDW and UO, so they know what a good park is, and they loved it. I have to admit it feels a little weird for there to be so few people at such a fun park, but I'll gladly take the short queues any day.

Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi: reinventing the movie park for the 21st Century

How do you top the world’s largest indoor theme park? By building an even bigger one, of course. That’s what destination developer Miral has done in Abu Dhabi. Blooloop profiles Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi, the latest showstopper at Yas Island.

The UAE’s (United Arab Emirates) newest theme park opened to the public on July 25 , following an inauguration two days earlier. The 1.65 million square feet (153,000 square metres) facility represents an investment equivalent to US$1 billion.

They don’t do things by halves at Yas Island. Located on the northeast side of Abu Dhabi’s mainland, 10 minutes from its international airport, the leisure and entertainment hub first rose to prominence in 2009 with the opening of the Yas Marina Circuit, home of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

The spirit of Formula 1 was celebrated again a year later with the launch of Ferrari World Abu Dhabi . At the time it was billed as the world’s biggest indoor theme park. At 240km/h, its signature Formula Rossa ride remains the planet’s fastest roller coaster.

A passion for super heroes

Yas Waterworld , which opened in 2013, has been named as one of the best waterparks in the world. It’s certainly one of the most ambitious and expensive. Then there’s Yas Mall, which sits between Ferrari World and Warner Bros. World. It’s the largest mall in Abu Dhabi, and by definition very large indeed.

All three theme parks are operated by Farah Experiences. As a movie park, Yas Island’s third theme park clearly adds something fresh to the mix. Yet the local press has suggested that this particular kind of park wouldn’t have arrived in the Emirate were it not for a passion of the Miral chairman. You see,  Mohammed Khalifa Al Mubarak , who also chairs the Abu Dhabi Tourism and Culture Authority, is super into super heroes .

“He’s a visionary leader,” says Peter van Roden , senior vice-president of global themed entertainment for Warner Bros. Consumer Products. “He is also this huge comic book and IP fan; the perfect partner.”

Step through the shield into an immersive world

When guests make their way through the park’s iconic Warner Bros. shield, they will be able to explore six themed zones. All in air-conditioned comfort. Warner Bros. Plaza is there to welcome them. There’s also Gotham City , Metropolis (pictured below), Cartoon Junction , Bedrock and Dynamite Gulch .

Spread across these immersive lands are 29 state-of-the-art rides and attractions, featuring characters from DC Comics, Looney Tunes and Hanna-Barbera. A particular favourite of Al Mubarak is Superman.

Thinkwell , the LA-based global design and production agency , acted as creative lead from start to finish, bringing in several subcontractors as required. Among these was Wyatt Design , which served as key design consultant on several areas.  LifeFormations created over 100 animatronic figures used in six attractions. Aspen Creations , based in Dubai, did the fabrication and installation on a number of areas including Warner Bros Plaza, Cartoon Junction, Bedrock, The Flintstones Bedrock River Adventure, Fast and Furry-ous, Bronto Burgers, Gotham City and The Riddler Revolution. Other suppliers included  Animax Designs, Inc. , Blur, Ears Up Sound Design ,  Electrosonic , GDE , Louis Berger, Smart Monkeys , Pixomondo, Pure Imagination and Ted King Entertainment.

Everything, including the park’s two roller coasters and flume ride, is indoors. Unlike at Ferrari World, where four coasters escape outside. The vast building in which they are housed shimmers in a gold finish. In the UAE, you wouldn’t expect anything less.

Warner Bros. – back in the themed entertainment business

It’s 16 years since Warner Bros. last lent its name to a new theme park. Namely Parque Warner in Madrid. Whilst Warner Bros. Movie World (founded 1991) still operates on Australia’s Gold Coast, the German outlet of the same name was rebranded simply as Movie Park when it changed ownership in 2005. So why did the Hollywood studio decide now was the right time to return to the themed entertainment business? And why Abu Dhabi?

“The process started 10 or 12 years ago,” says van Roden. “Specifically, under our chairman and CEO Kevin Tsujihara , there has been a real focus on building franchises around our DC, animation, Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings IP [intellectual property]. Kevin has brought us into this new world and allowed us to think big. That lead to discussions with Miral, which had this vision not only for Yas Island but also for Abu Dhabi in general. We were looking, and they were ready. It’s lead to a really great partnership.”

Fully realised worlds

“Warner Bros has an almost 100-year legacy of producing and distributing high-quality entertainment to global audiences,” says Tsujihara. “This world-class attraction continues that tradition in grand style. Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi literally brings our characters to life and provides fans a truly unique immersive entertainment experience.”

One character conspicuous by his absence in Abu Dhabi is Harry Potter. “That was not a deliberate decision,” says van Roden. “Pretty soon after starting the masterplanning for the park, we settled on this mix of DC and animation. We didn’t want to overreach, you know? Not putting too many different IPs into this park is to its advantage because you can fully realise each of these worlds.”

Making memories, not movies

Unlike a handful of earlier movie parks, or indeed Warner Bros. Studio Tour London (home of the Harry Potter backstage tour ), you won’t find any film-making going on at Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi. Rather, this is an entertainment park that celebrates the silver screen and small screen intellectual properties within in. As families enjoy the richly-themed experiences and interact with the characters inside the park, they will surely make memories for many years to come. Yes, there will be selfies.

“This is not a ‘behind-the-scenes’ park, says  Craig Hanna , chief creative officer at Thinkwell . “At Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi we treat the characters as living and working in the park. Where would they live? Where would they eat and where do they work? That was the basis for the stories, rides, shows and attractions in the park.”

Different moods

“There is such a mix of environments,” says van Roden. “You move from this classic Warner Bros. Plaza and into the animation side. I think all of us have wanted to walk through Bedrock and meet The Flintstones some point. Dynamite Gulch is this cartoony kind of wild west, home to Road Runner and Wile E Coyote. Then you’ve got Cartoon Junction with this really bright, stylized sky and a beautiful Looney Tunes and Hanna-Barbera carousel.

“On the other side of Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi is this really cool Metropolis. However it gets darker and darker as you move into Gotham where the DC Super-Villains have taken over. The different moods created inside each of these lands is incredible, and the lighting is absolutely stunning.”

The indoor advantage

The prime reason for the park being indoors is obviously the local climate. “It’s 109 degrees [Fahrenheit, 43°C] outside right now,” said van Roden, speaking to Blooloop the weekend before opening. “Being able to walk into an air-conditioned box is a wonderful thing.”

Yet in most movie parks, the majority of major attractions and pre-shows are already inside buildings. All Warner Bros. World has done is bring the other attractions and the themed environments that link them inside too.

“That has been a huge advantage,” says van Roden. “It gives the park this intimacy. We can really control the lighting, the sound, the ceiling heights; the way you transition between these immersive environments.”

“Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi is special,” says Hanna. “We took advantage of the fact that we were indoors to fully immerse guests in worlds and stories in ways that can’t be done outdoors. Like the perpetual night of Gotham, the continual ‘hero hour’ of Metropolis, or the always ‘sunny’ Cartoon Junction.”

Storytelling techniques, technology and rides systems

Today’s technology means Warner Bros. has been able to create an entirely different park to those that it put its name to in the latter part of the 20th Century.

“We determined the best mix for the broadest demographic and developed experiences with certain technologies and ride systems in mind,” says Hanna. “For example, the dark rides Scooby-Doo: Museum of Mysteries, Ani-Mayhem and Justice League: Warworld Attacks take advantage of being trackless in ways never before seen in theme parks.”

Dark rides – such as Ani-Mayhem, pictured above – are a great way of telling stories. Another is Batman: Knight Flight, which marries a dark ride with a dynamic motion system and state-of-the-art special effects. Flying theatre fans will enjoy Green Lantern: Galactic Odyssey, which transports audiences to distant galaxies. Featuring an i-Ride system by Brogent Technologies , it’s the first attraction of its kind to be supplied with 3D glasses.

There’s a more traditional ride system at the heart of The Flintstones Bedrock River Adventure. Yet this family-friendly flume ride from Intamin is a lot of fun as it takes visitors on a voyage through prehistoric suburbia.

Even the park’s roller coasters immerse riders in an adventure. Tom & Jerry’s Swiss Cheese Spin is a spinning coaster that uses backlight effects to keep guests on the edge of their seat. Then there’s Fast & Furry-ous, a suspended family coaster from Intamin, which van Roden particularly enjoys.

Every attraction tells a story

“Like each of the rides, Fast & Furry-ous has its own soundtrack. It’s perfectly timed to the ride as Wile E Coyote chases Road Runner around the track. I’m laughing every time I get off it.”

Van Roden also singles out The Riddler Revolution – pictured above – perhaps one of the most elaborately-themed Zamperla Disk’O Coaster installations ever. “You feel like you are going to hit the edge of this building as its breaks through. It’s absolutely thrilling, and clearly one of the best rides in the park. The beauty of this park is it’s not like we spent all the money on a few e-ticket attractions and then bought some off-the-shelf rides to fill in the gaps. Every single attraction has a story.”

International audience and local considerations

In designing the park, Thinkwell considered the market and demographic makeup very carefully.

“We wanted to make sure the park appeals to an international audience,” says Hanna. “Plus we looked at the attractions next door at Ferrari World to ensure this park was distinctive and balanced. Whether you’re a local, an expat family, or a tourist there will be unique things to see, do and taste around every corner.”

“There was a discussion about language very early on,” says van Roden. “It was decided that English should be the base language, with Arabic supporting in certain areas such as signage and restaurants. That’s because Yas Island as a destination attracts people from from Europe as well as to the East, so the common language is English.”

A market within a four to five hour flight time

There were other considerations to make when it came to the local audience. “We have some wonderful prayer rooms, and have addressed all the appropriate things in terms of dress and diet. But overall there were very few adjustments to make. The UAE is quite forward-looking in terms of openness within the Middle East. This park is very much a statement of that.”

Van Roden says the park’s core market is expected to be those within a 100-200 mile (160-320km) radius, comfortably taking in all of the UAE. Yet European, Indian and South East Asian visitors are also in its sights.

“The number of Chinese visitors who booked for opening day was remarkable. There is a strong market within that four to five hour flight time.”

The UAE’s increasingly diverse attraction mix

“I think increasingly the UAE is becoming a destination in itself,” says van Roden. “People are coming to visit Abu Dhabi and Dubai together. We have some visionary leaders intent on building enough travel hooks between all the beaches, hotels and shopping malls. It’s all about moving beyond being that weekend destination. Abu Dhabi is really adding to that with museums and culture. The Louvre , down the road from us, is absolutely mind-blowing.”

And how long might Warner Bros. World keep families entertained?

“You know, I think this is an all-day affair if you are going to wander through it all, see everything and ride everything,” declares van Roden. “It adds to the length of stay for Yas Island and the entire region.”

A record breaking indoor theme park

Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi snatches the title of world’s largest indoor theme park from IMG Worlds of Adventure in Dubai, and Ferrari World Abu Dhabi before it. All three feature licensed intellectual property of one kind or another. So too do the trio of properties at Dubai Parks and Resorts, which launched in late 2016.

IMG’s creator, the Ilyas & Mustafa Galadari Group subsequently announced plans to build an even bigger theme park . If it comes to fruition, the 2 million sq ft IMG World of Legends will be crammed with dozens of brands from multiple IP providers. Yet plans for a 20th Century Fox movie park in Dubai have been put on hold amid concerns about oversupply of parks in the region.

IP quality Vs quantity

Van Roden isn’t worried that the UAE has gone OTT on IP. “I don’t think it’s overload,” he says. “The way the UAE is developing as a destination, I think there is plenty of room to grow. We didn’t come in and try to blow everybody out of the water by putting 20 IPs in there. We thought we are going to build the best theme park in the region. And I really think we’ve done that; up there with our friends at Disneyland Paris in terms of quality for EMEA [Europe, Middle East and Africa].”

“The DC film franchise is a juggernaut and continues to grow,” he adds. “The great success of Wonder Woman, and we hope the future success of Aquaman and other films coming down the pipe, is really exciting for us.”

Giving classic brands a new lease of life

Van Roden concedes the Looney Tunes and Hanna-Barbera brands might not be as powerful as they once were. But he believes they are a great fit for the park, and that their inclusion within Warner Bros. World can nurture a new generation of fans.

“These are iconic IPs that, even if they are not at the top of their media game, within the immersive environment of a theme park can help relaunch a brand in a lot of ways. That is actually part of our strategy.”

Above all, “we have built a park to grow into, with partners who have an interest in the future. We are already having discussions about what we can do next.”

That may include future attractions that are partially outdoors.

An Orlando model for the Middle East?

Peter van Roden joined Warner Bros. Consumer Products in March of 2016. He has more than two decades’ experience in creating location-based entertainment – from touring exhibits to theme parks – for media companies including Sesame Workshop and National Geographic. So whilst everyone is still finding their feet in the UAE theme park market, he’s certainly not green around the gills.

Craig Hanna, too, has a good pedigree in both themed entertainment and working with major film/TV brands. He works out of LA for goodness sake. So how does the Thinkwell executive rate the industry’s potential in this particular corner of the Middle East?

“The UAE is trying to transform its economy. Its offer to tourists with an ‘if you build it they will come’ mentality is a bit like what Orlando did. Already the UAE is seeing huge growth in tourism. This park will give Yas Island a strong and distinctive competitive advantage. I’m not an economic advisor, so I can’t look into my crystal ball and predict where the cap for these parks will be. However, I would ask you this: When will Orlando reach a critical mass of theme parks?”

About the construction of Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi, van Roden says: “Construction is always an interesting thing, a life of compromise and communication. I will say Miral has been an incredible partner. You go into these big projects looking for someone who brings value. It’s not just about coming along with a cheque book. And the value of Miral is that they are a world-class building and construction company. They have unbelievable people working for them; their resources and connections in the marketplace were second-to-none.”

Finding a creative force to bring the park to life

Thinkwell was appointed to lead the design effort in Abu Dhabi following several previous Warner Bros collaborations, including Warner Bros. Studio Tour London .

“Disney has Imagineering, Universal has Universal Creative,” says van Roden. “While we have the IP and storytelling expertise, we do not have that creative design house. So in partnering with an outside firm we looked for someone that could take on the roll of master designer and provide overall creative management. That’s hard to find. Thinkwell brought that capability, and they were able to scale themselves up to take on a project like this.”

“We have worked on this project for more than 10 years in one form or another,” says the company’s Craig Hanna. “Hundreds of Thinkwellians and hundreds more talented, creative and passionate people all over the world were involved. We have seen it through from blue sky concept through to opening, producing more than 2,300 original art files. These range from the park’s map to can labels on props on shelves. We produced all shows, rides and attractions as creative and technical integration leaders. And we conceived, created and produced all media for the park. We are extremely proud of the work we’ve done on it. I think that passion shows everywhere you look.”

Abu Dhabi’s theme park future

The fate of Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi now lies in the public’s hands. Unlike many new theme parks, there was no soft opening period. There was, however, about a week of trial runs as invited guests, travel agents and military got to sample its delights. This proved invaluable to general manager Mark Gzellman and his team to fine tune operations. The inauguration event on July 23 was attended by Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed , Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and deputy supreme commander of the Armed Forces, and Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid , vice-president and ruler of Dubai.

Van Roden says Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi can comfortably accommodate anywhere between 4,000 and 7,000 guests per day. The annual attendance target is between 1.5 and 2 million. Now in its eighth year, Ferrari World Abu Dhabi entertains over a million. Yas Waterworld welcomed 550,000 visitors last year. So Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi must work hard to achieve the visitor numbers expected of it. Its offer is arguably more inclusive though than Ferrari World.

The UAE’s theme park capital?

A fourth theme park has already been announced by Miral for Yas Island. SeaWorld Abu Dhabi is set to open in 2022 and will be the first SeaWorld outside the USA and the first without orcas. This Abu Dhabi entertainment hub certainly looks like giving any competing operations in Dubai a run for their money. Can Abu Dhabi become not just the sovereign state’s capital, but its theme park capital too?

1. Warner Bros. Plaza

Theme parks inspired by film and television, as Saudi Arabia announces Dragon Ball land

A theme park inspired by Dragon Ball , a popular Japanese manga and anime franchise, has been announced in Saudi Arabia.

Qiddiya Investment Company , which is also building the first Six Flags amusement park in the region, announced the project over the weekend, much to the excitement and anticipation of the show's fans.

No official opening date has been revealed yet, but when it does open, it will be the world's first Dragon Ball -inspired theme park, allowing visitors to experience the adventures of Goku and the manga's entire ensemble in person.

To be located in Qiddiya, an entertainment and tourism megaproject in Riyadh, the park will span 500,000 square metres. It will feature seven themed lands with more than 30 rides, as well as hotels and restaurants.

Renderings of the park show landmarks recognisable to fans of the franchise, including the pink island bungalow Kame House and the domed Capsule Corporation. The centrepiece of the park is the 70-metre-high rollercoaster based on Shenron, the mythical wish-granting dragon that can be summoned by anyone who collects all the seven titular balls.

The theme park announcement comes at a significant time, just weeks after the death of Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama and in the same year that Japanese graphic novels are celebrating their 40th anniversary.

This is not the first time a pop culture series has inspired a theme park. Taking inspiration from beloved characters, settings and storylines elevates the experience of amusement park goers, especially for those who happen to also be familiar with the thematic references.

Here are some of the most popular pop culture inspired theme parks in the region:

Motiongate Dubai

Located within the vast Dubai Parks and Resorts complex, Motiongate Dubai takes inspiration from Hollywood. It showcases five themed areas dedicated to popular films. For example, the DreamWorks Animation area houses attractions based on Kung Fu Panda, How to Train Your Dragon , Madagascar and Shrek .

There is also a zone dedicated to films from Columbia Pictures, including Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs , Hotel Transylvania and Ghostbusters. Rides and attractions based on the Hunger Games and John Wick franchises can be found in the Lionsgate area, while a children-focused entertainment can be found at The Smurfs' Village.

Warner Bros World, Abu Dhabi

One of the largest indoor theme parks in the world, Warner Bros World in the UAE capital features six themed lands.

Gotham City and Metropolis are based on the fictional settings of DC Comics characters Batman and Superman, Cartoon Junction land features rides and attractions based on characters such as Scooby-Doo, Tom and Jerry, as well as Bugs Bunny and friends; an American desert landscape is recreated at Dynamite Gulch, with featuring Looney Tunes characters including Wile E Coyote and Marvin the Martian. Fans of The Flintstones will enjoy a trip back in time to the Stone Age in the Bedrock area, where visitors can go on a scenic boat tour, taking in prehistoric sights and sounds along the way. Over in Warner Bros Plaza, cinema lovers will enjoy a meander through a world inspired by the Golden Age of Hollywood, with shopping and dining options befitting the theme, such as Hollywood Trattoria and Celebrity Scoop soda shop.

Guests can also check into the The WB Abu Dhabi, Curio Collection by Hilton hotel to be close to all of the action, with a Warner Bros-themed hotel stay.

Coming soon: Harry Potter Themed Land at Warner Bros World, Abu Dhabi

Next year, Warner Bros World will add another immersive world to its ranks, the first Harry Potter-themed land in the Middle East.

Fans of the book and film franchise will be able to step into the wizarding world of Harry Potter and friends. Announced by Miral in 2022, the park promises to stay "as true to the story as possible," Miral Experiences chief executive Julien Kauffmann told The National last month, while bringing the experience "to the next level".

There are already four of Harry Potter-themed amusement park areas located at Universal Studios around the world. In the US there are two, one located at Universal Orlando Resort in Florida and a second at Universal Studios Hollywood in California. In Asia, you can currently immerse yourself in JK Rowling's fictional world at Universal Studios Japan and Universal Studios Beijing, the newest of the four, which opened in 2021. Each of the Wizarding Worlds have a number of Harry Potter-themed attractions, including the Flight of the Hippogriff roller coaster for children and the Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey guided vehicle ride. There is also an interactive Ollivander's Wand Shop Experience located at each of the four parks.

In England, you can visit the Making of Harry Potter experience at the Warner Bros Studio Tour London, which displays parts of the original film sets, as well as original props and costumes from the movie franchise.

Angry Birds World, Doha

Inside Doha Festival City is the world's first theme park inspired by popular video game Angry Birds, which was extended into a Netflix television series, Angry Birds Toons , in 2013. Featuring the game's identifiable characters, Red, Chuck, Matilda and more, the space combines arcade games, indoor and outdoor rides and attractions, and a water park.

More than 20 attractions are featured at the park, including drop tower ride Blast Bomb, family-friendly flat ride Bouncing Blues and Super Slingshot, a ride that flings guests 60 metres into the air. There is also a laser tag arena, a trampoline park and an adventure zone with zip lines and slides.

IMG Worlds of Adventure, Dubai

The indoor amusement park IMG Worlds of Adventure is divided into five different zones – two of which are based on Cartoon Network and the Marvel universe.

The Cartoon Network zone features some of its most popular characters, including Ben 10 and the Powerpuff Girls. There are also rides and attractions based on Adventure Time and The Amazing World of Gumball . The Marvel area features character-inspired rides, including the Thor Thunder Spin, a spinning water ride; Spider-Man Doc Ock's Revenge, a roller coaster with 180° views; and Avengers Battle of Ultron guided vehicle ride.
