Have checked the manual and searched this site and don't come up with a clear solution, so does anyone have a suggestion? 2006 Road Glide, cruise control is not working. The switch on the bars to engage the cruise is functioning, and the green light comes on in the Gage an stays lit, but the cruise will not engage. Could it be just a simple cable adjustment will fix it? Before tearing into it, would love to hear if anyone else has had this issue and what the fix was.

Make sure a brake light switch is not activated.

Thanks for the link, I will check it out.

  • Jun 4, 2018

ok, no luck. Got an electrical manual for the bike and have run the cruise diagnostic tests and everything passes, but the cruise still will not engage. Light in tach turns green when set and just does not physically engage and set the speed. Does anyone have a clue?

you may want to check the small cable from the cruise module that attaches to the induction module. There is a small retaining ring that holds it in place. tourbox

Will let you know what I find. I have gone through everything and the cables all looked good and connections solid, but I will make sure I didn't miss anything.

The green light tells me that all the disengage switches (brakes, clutch, throttle roll off) are working correctly. Look at the actuating cable from the cruise servo to the throttle body.

Since the OP hasn't gotten back, does anyone know at what speed he is trying to set the cruise?

Cruise control not working again

  • Add to quote

had this same problem a while back and that cause was the accessory fuse blown. well the fuse is good but i put a new one in anyway. brake light is not stuck on so its not the foot pedal switch. open up the switch compartment and the little piece that always seems to break that sits in the slot on the brake handle is not broken. dont see a crimped or broken wire , but how would that happen if it was never messed with. so i am stumped. when i turn on the switch on the dash it lights up red like it should, but when i engage the switch it doesnt turn green and obviously it doesnt work. the only code showing is for the cruise control fault so i am guessing its the switch ? with the fall riding season upon us and the leaves may turn color eventually  i would like to have it working. if not for that, i would just wait till winter time to mess with it.

2007 road king cruise control not working

Any changes in grips, bars, etc. ? Obviously something is shorting out the accessory circuit? Or the cruise control switch is damaged Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

while sitting in the shed i also pulled clutch in light went to green. pulled brake in,light went to green. foot brake depressed, green light again. nothing was done to it. been using it since fuse replaced sometime ago. just stopped working

Hmm seems to be working in opposite, I’d bet on an ecm fault Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Did you do something prior to the fuse blowing? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

nope but that was 2 years ago

P0577 Code means there is an electrical fault in the cruise control circuit due to a failed switch, or abnormal voltage level in the input circuit.

2007 road king cruise control not working

I had the same problem with my 2012 Custom. I found the front brake light switch was bad so I did a quick repair and all was well for a while. When the cruise stopped working again I used the Harley diagnostic check and found the set/resume switch was faulty. I replaced both the front brake lamp switch and the set/resume switch and all has been well ever since. I'll list below the Diagnostic Steps I used. Hope this helps. Mike U. 1. Hold cruise switch in the SET position. 2. Turn the cruise ON. 3. Turn the main power switch on, the cruise light should initially come on then turn GREEN, release the cruise switch the light will turn RED. 4. Push the cruise switch to RESUME the light should turn GREEN, release the switch, the light should turn RED. 5. Roll the throttle OFF make sure you roll it off to activate the cutoff switch for the cruise, the light should turn GREEN, release the throttle the light should turn RED. 6. Apply the front brake, the light should turn GREEN, release it, the light should turn RED. What you have done is test each of the SWITCHES that are in the cruise system. If, during any of the tests, the light does not turn GREEN, then that part is at fault.

so again i went outside and did all the diagnostic with light going from red to green an d all does. took it apart again and made sure the plunger is still there and plunges. no signs of frayed wire. stopped at a guy that does harley customizing in the neighborhood and he said he would change out the switch assembly. so either i spend the 200.00 and try and change it and hope its the problem or take it to the stealer and fork out more money to be certain. i have not found a video on line for the change out. anybody have a link to one ?

If you have external wiring, it's a breeze If you do. (Plug & Play) If you don't,good luck! The Plug is up in the fairing. Taking the fairing off is the longest part of the job.

2007 road king cruise control not working

I've got a 2019 RG Ultra. Just replaced the hand grips. Cruise control power light comes on orange but when I try to set it going down the road, it won't engage. Any advice as to what the problem may be?

Check to see if your brake light is stuck on . If it is , you broke the tit on the switch for the front brakes. The bike thinks the brake is being applied and wont let CC engage.

I fixed the issue with the brake lights. The throttle side was sticking so I took it all apart and now the light is not on anymore. The cruise still is not working.

5 Reasons Why Your Cruise Control Stopped Working

Magnus Sellén

  • Updated: March 15, 2023

Cruise Control Not Working

It would be difficult to find a vehicle on the road today without cruise control. This invaluable feature makes driving long distances easier but can also cause trouble when it malfunctions. Understanding the reasons your cruise control stopped working ensures that you can get the problem fixed quickly for a more enjoyable ride.

While this fault can cause issues with the cruise control system itself, there could also be an effect on the acceleration of your vehicle. That’s why you want to have it looked at as soon as you notice a problem. Let’s take a quick look at the reasons your cruise control may have stopped working.

Reasons Why Your Cruise Control Stopped Working

The most common reason a cruise control stops working is due to a blown fuse or a defective brake pedal switch . It can also be caused by issues with the throttle control system or the ABS. In older cruise control systems, it can be caused by a broken vacuum line.

Here is a more detailed list of the possible reasons your cruise control is not working:

1. Blown Fuse

broken fuse

All electrical systems in the vehicle are controlled by fuses. Your cruise control system is attached to a fuse that can blow if there is a short circuit or fault. Without a good fuse, the cruise control system can’t work at all.

Thankfully, it’s not difficult to find and replace a blown fuse. Look in the owner’s manual to find the fuse that corresponds with the cruise control technology.

2. Defective Brake Pedal Switch

push brake pedal

The brake pedal switch is responsible for turning the brake lights on and off based on the pedal position. Cruise control systems are designed to disengage whenever your brake pedal gets pressed.

Because the cruise control is wired into the brake pedal switch, any fault can cause it to stop working. When the brake pedal switch malfunctions, the car believes the brakes are engaged, causing the system to turn off automatically. Not only that, but your car’s brake light might also be stuck on, leaving confused drivers in your wake.

3. Malfunctioning Speed Sensor

abs sensor close

Speed sensors are located on every wheel or differential. The purpose of these sensors is to monitor the speed of the wheels to determine if traction control is needed.

The speed sensors are also part of the cruise control system. When a sensor fails, the cruise control can stop working and the speedometer might act strange as well.

If there is an issue with a speed sensor, it will often show with an ABS warning light or a check engine light on the dashboard.

RELATED: 3 Symptoms of a Bad ABS Wheel Speed Sensor

4. Electrical Issues

cruise control buttons

The cruise control system is electronic, with many components working together to make the system operate. If the cruise control fails to work, you want to check the wiring harness and associated connectors for a fault.

You also need to ensure that the voltage source is supplying enough power to the system. Even the smallest fault can cause defects with the cruise control. In many cases, there can be an issue with the cruise control lever or buttons causing the cruise control to not engage.

If your cruise control buttons are located on the steering wheel it could also be caused by a bad clock spring, which is located behind the steering wheel.

Check the system with an OBD2 scanner to look for any trouble codes related to the cruise control.

RELATED: 5 Symptoms of a Broken Clock Spring, Location & Replacement Cost

5. Damaged Vacuum Actuator, Hoses or Cable (Older cruise control)

If you drive an older vehicle with cruise control, you might have an issue with the vacuum actuator or the cable that connects to the throttle. If there has been damage done to the vacuum hoses or the actuator, the cruise control will stop working altogether.

Additionally, the cable linking the actuator to the throttle must be in good shape. If it has been broken, the cruise control will fail.

What is Cruise Control?

Cruise control is a feature that is used when you are traveling at a consistent speed. Cruise control was first introduced for automobiles in the 1950s. However, it took many years before it became a staple in the modern vehicle.

This electrical system allows you to set a predetermined speed and take your foot off of the gas pedal. If you are on a long drive, there is less fatigue because you don’t have to try to maintain your speed. Cruise control can also benefit fuel economy because the vehicle uses less fuel when traveling steadily.

In newer cars, you might be able to find adaptive cruise control , which is a smart technology. Adaptive cruise control allows you to travel at a predetermined speed, but it also helps to maintain a safe distance from the vehicles in front of you with the help of sensors. With conventional cruise control, you need to take over when the car in front of you slows down, but that’s not the case with adaptive cruise control.

There are also vehicles nowadays with not only cruise control, but fully self-driving vehicles . We will most likely see much more of this in the future.

Cruise Control Repair Cost

The cost to repair your cruise control system depends on what caused it to fail. If you need to replace a cruise control or brake switch, you might spend between $125 and $350, including parts and labor. However, the cost to change a fuse is only a few dollars and you can perform the replacement yourself in just a matter of seconds.

On the other hand, when something major fails, such as the actuator, you could be looking at a much higher repair bill. In some vehicles, the cost to replace a cruise control actuator can cost more than $700. These costs rise if you drive a luxury vehicle or one that is difficult to get parts for.

It might not seem immediately important for you to fix the broken cruise control, but this defective system can affect other performance aspects. You could start to notice issues with acceleration or have trouble with the speedometer. To play it safe, it’s always best to have the cruise control repaired as soon as you notice a problem.

Is there a fuse for the cruise control?

Yes. If the cruise control is installed from the factory, you should check your car’s owner’s manual for the fuse location. If it’s an aftermarket cruise control, you’ll need to follow the wires to find the fuse.

Does the brake switch affect the cruise control system?

Yes. The brake switch affects the cruise control system. The brake switch sends a signal to the cruise control system to let it know when the brakes are being applied for the engine to know when it should stop accelerating.

Will the cruise control work if the check engine light is on?

The cruise control function will be disabled when the check engine light is on in most car models, even if the cause of the check engine light is not the cruise control itself. This is mainly due to safety reasons.

Can a vacuum leak affect cruise control?

Older vehicles use vacuum to control the throttle for the cruise control, and in this case a vacuum leak can heavily affect the cruise control. However, modern cruise controls are fully electric and in most cases will not be affected by a vacuum leak if the check engine light is not illuminated.

Although many people may think that the cruise control system is unimportant and not worth spending money to repair, the problem can be caused by a faulty part that will affect the engine’s performance or durability. Therefore, it is best not to ignore the problem if your cruise control is not working without first diagnosing the car properly.

If your cruise control still isn’t working after trying all the tips in this article, it’s probably time to take it in for a professional opinion from a mechanic. It may be a more serious problem that requires replacement parts or repairs. In the meantime, drive safe and enjoy the open road!

Fixed cruise control and check engine light problem

  • Add to quote

Another post on cruise control and check engine light problem but this had a good outcome on my backyard mechanic checkout ability. 2008 Ultra Classic Symptoms include: 1) Intermittent check engine light 2) Cruise control not engaging In the field operation with check engine light on showed the cruise control would engage after holding the set switch for a long time in set mode. When engagement observed check engine light would go out. Engagement would last various lengths of time from a few minutes to much longer periods of time. But would always drop out on its own. There seemed to be a correlation between the check engine light and the cruise control operation. Suspect an electrical problem. Actions taken: 1) Researched Forums and learned there are many symptoms, fixes, guesses, other things to try for troubleshooting cruise control problems and check engine light "on" conditions. Didn't find an exact symptom or fix posting for this situation. 2) Performed the check switches post instructions which was very valuable and gave a baseline place to start troubleshooting. Repeated here for convenience: Easiest way to check all dropout functions of your cruise control. 1. bike off, run/stop to run 2. push set/resume to set and hold. 3 with cruise on/off switch to on, turn on bike 4. cruise indicator light should be green, release set switch, light should turn red. 5. push to resume and release, light should turn green then red 6. push throttle closed and release, light should turn green then red 7. push rear brake pedal and release, light should turn green then red 8. pull front brake lever, light should turn green then red 9. on models with a clutch/neutral starter lockout, pull clutch lever, light should turn green then red whichever switch does not turn the light green, is your bad one. if light will not turn green at all and you have followed ALL directions and tried multiple times, your set/resume switch is bad. If light stays green even after releasing set switch, one of the dropout switches is stuck closed, usually the roll off throttle switch. unplug this and try again. make sure brake light will not turn on without using brakes (wobbly brake lever, stuck rear brake light switch etc.) Happy hunting!! P.S. this is really the easiest way to troubleshoot cruise control!!!! 3) Since all switches checked out good - gave up on trying and took bike to dealer to get fixed. 4) Dealer couldn't find anything wrong on a quick check of codes, etc., and said he would research it and get back with me. Nice thing is he didn't charge me for the checkout. 5) Next steps, took seat off and disconnected every connector I could see and sprayed with CRC electronics cleaner. Couldn't get the ECM disconnected and just swung the lever over on that big connector to what I though would allow me to disconnect that connector. Couldn't pull it apart but sprayed it anyway. Then took headlight off and reached up in the fairing area and shook the cables and connectors and inspected what I could see for any wires that may look frayed or rubbing away insulation. Everything looked great so just shook it all up again reassembled headlight and put seat back on. 5) Cruise control now works like it use to and no check engine light staying on anymore. 6) Back to loving my ride again.

2002 Road King Cruise control failure

  • Add to quote

Today the Cruise control on my 2002 Road King (FLHRCI) went kaput. Seems like the stepper motor is inoperative. All functions work except it fails to keep constant speed. I swapped the control module with another one I have and the symptom stayed with the control module. Tried ordering another via the internet and was met with rebuffs everywhere. Seems like Harley has stopped distribution of cruise control parts for early touring models. The part in question is 70955-98B - Control module. It is also part of Cruise control kit 77183-02 also no where to be found. I have been unable to find anywhere in the universe a place that sells 70955-98B. One thread I found said that 70989-98B is an acceptable substitute but it also is no where to be found. Also how can I confirm this? Has anyone gone through this scenario? If yes, what can be done to get my Road King cruising again?

Have you used your local dealer's parts counter and asked them to do a "part locator" search nationally/internationally using HDNet? Carl

Carl, Thanks for the quick reply. That's tomorrows project but other people on the forums I have perused have tried this avenue and failed. About the only thing I can hope for is a suitable substitute. About a year ago I purchased one of the kits (77183-02), which has now been obsoleted, for another project which is why I was able to swap the bad one out and determine the module is bad. Unfortunately I need the good one for another bike.

This maybe worth a try .... i thought i had a 'stepper' problem but traced it to the cable module on the headstock, this sits just behind your throttle cables, you got two wires which activate this device, simply unplug it, tape them up and hey presto, the cruise control works reliably again - you can still switch the system off by tapping your front brake but not by rolling of the throttle so be aware. Good luck pal.

Thanks Biffo,. The thing you are talking about is called a "Roll Out" switch here in the states. I thought of that also but the disconnecting the wires did not resolve the issue.

70989-98c http://www.kutterharleyonline.com/product/70989-98C

70955-98 http://www.ebay.com/itm/1999-Harley...526120c&item=150678671884&pt=Motorcycles_Part

or this page http://motors.shop.ebay.com/i.html?_nkw=Harley+Davidson+Cruise+control

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. I have resolved the issue thanks to a bird dogging parts guy at Gator Harley in Leesburg Florida. He managed to find a "Almost substitute" and it does work. They even had two in stock. Installed it today. It is PN# 70989-98C. It is the module only. The original PN# (70955-98B) included the cable that attaches the module to the throttle body. The substitute does not have this cable. I do not know what I would do if I ever need a cable since there is no part number for it. Again, Thanks for all the suggestions, links and comments.

I know this is kind of an old post but I thought I would post this I case anyone ever needs it. The cable you are referring to is called a stepper cable. Part number 56372-98 would most likely work. I called Harley he said he doubts they can get it but when I gave him the part number he said it could be ordered and would be about $40 CDN (there may be a revised part number but he didn't say). I found it in an old cruise control retrofit instruction guide on the Harley website for the 1996-1999 Road Kings
