Key Takeaways
- Tom Cruise laughed off Family Guy's harsh parody, praising Seth MacFarlane's comedic talent.
- Despite South Park's controversial portrayal of him, Cruise backlash resulted in halting subsequent episode reruns.
- Tom Cruise rejected a role on The Simpsons, leaving fans to wonder if he disdained being parodied.
Tom Cruise is one of the most famous stars in the world. In his decades-plus career making some of the most iconic films ever, Cruise has been publicly parodied numerous times. This includes a brutal satirization by Seth MacFarlane on Family Guy.
During a joint interview on The Graham Norton Show, Cruise had the chance to confront MacFarlane about his parody. In this article, we will take a look at just how Tom Cruise responded when he came face to face with Seth MacFarlane, as well as Cruise's response to being satirized on South Park and The Simpsons.
How Did Tom Cruise Respond To Seth MacFarlane After He Roasted Him On Family Guy?
Tom Cruise faced one of his most pointed parodies in an episode of Family Guy that depicted him as a tiny, homosexual kidnapper. While Cruise has been the butt of many jokes, this Family Guy bit was easily one of the most pointed. But unlike many celebrities who have been satirized on the Fox show, Cruise got a chance to look the creator in the eye.
Alongside his Edge of Tomorrow co-star, Emily Blunt , Tom Cruise sat with Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane on The Graham Norton Show.
Sitting alongside Cruise and Blunt were other A-list celebrities, Charlize Theron and Seth MacFarlane, who were there to promote their movie A Million Ways to Die in the West. During one particular segment, the show's host brought up Family Guy. This gave Cruise the perfect opportunity to confront the man responsible for his brutal parody. But he didn't take it...
One might suspect that Tom Cruise (known for his short temper when he feels disrespected, for example, the time he lost his temper when someone touched him ) would have harbored some form of animosity towards Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane for his constant jokes about him. But surprisingly, there was nothing but love between the two stars.
During another segment on the Graham Norton Show, Norton brought up the topic of voice impressions, for which McFarlane is famous. Not to be outdone, Cruise started by revealing his near-perfect interpretation of Donald Duck, which left the host, the guest, and the audience in a fit of laughter.
Seth MacFarlane later mimicked Kermit the Frog as he recited a monologue from the film Taken. At that point, Tom Cruise laughed hysterically at McFarlane 's spot-on interpretation of the fictional character. The Vanilla Sky actor commended Seth MacFarlane on his superior voicing skills, adding that he was a "funny guy."
Tom Cruise Was Livid After South Park Parodied Him During An Episode
Family Guy isn't the only animated series that made fun of Tom Cruise. The actor also infamously appeared in a 2005 episode of South Park. The episode in question, titled 'Trapped in the Closet', portrayed Tom Cruise as a homosexual man who was hiding in a closet . The episode also made fun of his Scientology beliefs .
According to a report in Indie Wire , the South Park episode was written using the consultation services of author Mark Ebner, who wrote a book entitled "Hollywood, Interrupted," a criticism of Scientology.
Leah Remini Revealed On Real Time With Bill Maher That Tom Cruise Doesn't Follow Every Rule With Scientology
Leah Remini gave behind the scenes details during her chat with Bill Maher, discussing what Tom Cruise is really like with Scientology.
Due to the graphic nature of the South Park episode, Tom Cruise threatened not to do a promotional tour for his film Mission: Impossible III due to the fact that Paramount Pictures ' parent company, Viacom, had been responsible for re-running the South Park episode on Comedy Central.
Although Paramount and Viacom agreed to cease subsequent re-running of the South Park episode and justly complied, a report in Fox News noted that Paramount Pictures' later signed a deal with South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone for additional movies.
Tom Cruise Flat Out Rejected A Voice-Over Role in The Simpsons
In Season 4 of the widely popular animated series The Simpsons, Tom Cruise was parodied in an episode entitled "Brother From The Same Planet."
In the episode, Homer Simpson and his son Bart are at odds because of the latter's sudden popularity. Due to their rift, Bart applied for a surrogate father via a Big Brother program and was assigned a military pilot specialist known as Tom, with whom Homer Simpson later engaged in a fight.
Tom's voice was spoken by the late actor Phil Hartman , who had voiced many characters on The Simpsons since its inception.
While the Tom character was a reference to Tom Cruise in his role in the film Top Gun: Maverick, the actor would have been an obvious choice to speak in the role. In fact, many celebrities on The Simpsons have been voiced by many stars, playing themselves, in the past.
According to a report in the editorial Screen Rant , The Simpsons producers initially approached Tom Cruise to voice the character of Tom. However, Cruise declined the opportunity seemingly without reason. But many fans have since debated whether the actor was too busy to take on the role or just disdained the idea of being parodied.
Here’s Seth MacFarlane And Tom Cruise Doing Impressions Of Beloved Children’s Characters
Graham Norton had Seth MacFarlane , Charlize Theron, Emily Blunt and Tom Cruise on to promote their Summer movie pile of western sh*t jokes and headshots . During the interview, the focus turns to MacFarlane’s work on Family Guy and his numerous voices, leading us down a road where everyone tries their best impression.
Shockingly enough, Tom Cruise wins the day. Mostly because I didn’t expect Tom Cruise to take part in the fun. If anything, I expected Tom Cruise to jump up onto the couch, roundhouse MacFarlene, and then attempt to woo Theron and Blunt into joining his cult wholly legitimate religious belief system.

Seth MacFarlane and Tom Cruise Show Off Their Impersonation Skills
Seth MacFarlane and Tom Cruise engaged in a hilarious impersonations duel.
There must be something in the water at The Graham Norton Show that makes crazy things happen once the cameras start rolling.
Last week, Jonah Hill , Channing Tatum , and Julie Andrews talked about Andrews’ nude scenes . This week, it was Seth MacFarlane , Charlize Theron , Emily Blunt , and Tom Cruise’s turn to get in on the action.
MacFarlane’s impersonation skills are well known, given that he does many of the voices on Family Guy . But who knew Cruise had such skills? And don’t sleep on Blunt either, not because her impression is all that good, but because it’s always funny to hear a British person do an American accent.

Watch Emily Blunt and Tom Cruise Do Charming Impressions of Each Other
This week on The Graham Norton Show , Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt shared a couch with Charlize Theron and Seth MacFarlane in order to promote The Edge of Tomorrow and A Million Ways to Die in the West , respectively. As you would expect, MacFarlane is called upon to do some of his popular impressions and characters from his show Family Guy . But he wasn’t the only one. Both Blunt and Cruise are cajoled into doing rather inaccurate but charming impressions of each other at around the 4:10 mark in the video. However, Cruise follows up his Mary Poppins-esque Blunt, with a bang-on Donald Duck impersonation. It could all be an act, but Cruise seems so endearingly reticent and genuinely overjoyed by MacFarlane doing Taken as Kermit the Frog that it makes you both want to love Cruise without the shadow of other doubts, and wonder if the internet really did kill our last real movie star .

Further details
Tom Cruise , talking about his new film Edge of Tomorrow , says: "It's a totally different character. I've never played a coward before but dying over and over again becomes a lot of fun as you try and work out different ways to die - it was like playing Wile E Coyote. The deaths became funny and I worked for a year on all the different screams!"
He reveals becoming an actor wasn't the first time he'd tried dangerous stunts, "I saw Evel Knievel jumping off a canyon and I lived on a steep hill so set up boards and trash cans to copy him. I was about eight years old and my sisters begged me not to do it, as I had been the hospital a few times by this point. I realised half way down the hill that I couldn't stop and it was too late to bail - I was committed and I thought I'm going to go so far and so high but of course the boards split and I ended up just pile-driving through the cans. It was violent and there was blood everywhere. My sisters were standing over me with no sympathy, just, 'We told you. You're in so much trouble.' My poor mother! She was very patient."
Confirming there will be a Mission Impossible 5 , Tom says, "We are working on that right now," and reveals, "We will be shooting it here in London. We love it here."
Reluctant to be drawn on a sequel for Top Gun , he says, "I don't know. People have been talking about it but it's no closer to being true, but we have been talking about coming up with a story and a script - we'll see."
Emily Blunt , revealing she was overwhelmed by Tom, says "When I first started working with him I kept saying, 'Oh my god, it's you!' Then the illusion kind of wears off."
On getting into shape for her role, she says, "It was really physical but it was cool training. I did all kind of stuff. Sprinting, weight training, yoga and Krav Maga, the Israeli martial art - it's pretty aggressive."
Talking about being pregnant during filming, she says, "For some additional photography I was pregnant but it was still early and I wasn't really telling anyone. So Tom was confused as to why I wasn't engaging with all the stunts, as I was game when we did them originally. So I told him I was growing a human. He was so cute about it and protected me - he almost went overboard on helping me. In the end I had to say, 'Tom. I'm fine, I can do stairs!'"
Charlize Theron , talking about her first movie, Children of the Corn III , says "I was an extra and I only had to run through a field and scream. I had to bring my own clothes. I was living from hand to mouth and had a brand new pair of Pumas and was really chuffed with myself and thought, 'I'm in a movie, I'll wear my new shoes,' and I got there and they just doused us in blood, which went all over my new sneakers. I was really upset about it, but not as upset as when I went to see the movie and they had dubbed my scream and I was like, 'Oh my god am I that bad?"
Seth MacFarlane , talking about his first non-animated screen kiss - with Charlize in their new movie A Million Ways to Die in the West , says "I was okay with it. I was a little afraid I would look a little goldfishy! But it was alright." With mock annoyance, Charlize interjects, "It was just 'alright.' Really?"
Talking about the success of Ted , Seth confirms Ted 2 is on the cards, "It will be happening in 2015. We are writing it as we speak," before performing Ted's Thunder Song to the delight of Graham and his audience.
Asked by Tom how many voices he can actually do, Seth says, "Just enough to avoid being myself," before indulging Graham by doing several voices from Family Guy and Liam Neeson 's phone call from Taken in the voice of Kermit the Frog.
Coldplay perform A Sky Full of Stars , before Chris Martin and Jonny Buckland join Graham for a chat about the success of their new album. Asked if it's true it's #1 in 70 countries, Chris says, "I can tell you where we are not number one. Cambodia, Mongolia, The Bahamas and Burkina Faso, and it's number three in Kehjistan!"
Asked if they would be touring soon there was an emphatic 'No' from both members of the band.
Jonny, asked if he gets recognised, says "I was this morning but my first reaction is aggression, like, 'How do you know my name?'"
On whether other band members are recognised, Chris talks about the Grammys when Jonny and Will won an award, "They were back stage and a woman came up to them and asked if we were doing the catering!"

Seth MacFarlane and Tom Cruise (Yes, Tom Cruise) Deliver Top-Notch Impressions on Graham Norton
By Dustin Rowles | Videos | May 31, 2014 |
Over on The Graham Norton Show this week, Tom Cruise and Seth MacFarlane were on promoting their respective movies ( A Million Ways to Die in the West and The Edge of Tomorrow ), and both ended up doing impersonations. The first three minutes of the clip are mostly MacFarlane running through his animated characters (and their inspirations).
Once you get exhausted with that, however (it should take about 30 seconds), Emily Blunt does a short, amusing impression of Tom Cruise (at 4:10), and then after he busts out a short impression of Blunt, Tom Cruise cracks out his Donald Duck (at 4:45) which is surprisingly delightful.
MacFarlane then wraps it up with a pretty great impression of Kermit the Frog delivering Liam Neeson’s Taken speech, which I hate to admit I rather enjoyed.

‘Family Guy’ Creator Seth MacFarlane Reflects on Show’s 25th Anniversary: ‘Still Surviving and Thriving’ | Video
“There’s no indication that the show is going to end anytime soon,” the Fox animated comedy’s creator and star tells TheWrap
“Family Guy” made its debut on Fox on Jan. 31, 1999, with the episode “Death Has a Shadow.” 25 years later, the animated comedy remains a genre staple, despite getting briefly canceled in 2002.
In January 2023, Fox renewed “Family Guy” for Seasons 22 and 23.
“It’s still surviving and thriving. It still has a sizable audience and is a perfect example of there being an appetite for something. So we continue to feed the beast,” MacFarlane told TheWrap. “There’s no indication that the show is going to end anytime soon.”
MacFarlane added that it feels “strange” to reach the 25th anniversary.
“I’ve just been going at a dead run ever since the show premiered,” he said. “Between then and now just feels like one really long day to me.”
When asked if he has a favorite episode or joke from the show, MacFarlane said that it’s a “tough question to answer.”
“There’s now so much of it that there are episodes that I don’t remember,” he said. “I go back and I’ll look at a show and I have a vague memory of making it. You’re faced with the reality of the passage of time and at some point in the past, this episode, this scene, this moment, frame by frame was so important that I had to get it exactly right, and now I can’t remember what happens next. I mean, there’s like 400 of these things. Who can keep track?”
Ultimately, he believes “Family Guy” has endured because of its ability to keep audiences laughing, much like the Jackie Gleason sitcom “The Honeymooners.”
“I would never ever compare these two shows… But I always loved the answer that Jackie Gleason gave when he was asked about how that show endured with only 39 episodes. And he just said, ‘Because they were funny.’ I don’t know that our answer would be any different,” MacFarlane said.
“I think the goal of the show is just to make people laugh… It delves into social allegory and politics now and then without question, as a good primetime animated show should, but that’s always secondary. It’s a room full of comedy writers who just want to f—g laugh… That’s the mission statement of the show and it doesn’t ever really try to position itself with any pomposity as anything more than that, which I think in this instance is probably a good thing.”
In addition to MacFarlane, “Family Guy” stars Alex Borstein, Seth Green and Mila Kunis.
MacFarlane executive produces the series alongside showrunners Rich Appel and Alec Sulkin, as well as Steve Callaghan, Tom Devanney, Danny Smith, Kara Vallow, Mark Hentemann and Patrick Meighan.
The animated comedy will return for its spring premiere at 9:30 p.m. ET/PT March 6 on Fox.

Why Charlize Theron Says She'll Remember Seth MacFarlane on Her 'Deathbed'
The costars – and close friends – talk to PEOPLE about their new comedy, A Million Ways to Die in the West
Despite her recent guest-hosting gig on Saturday Night Live , Oscar winner Charlize Theron is not known for her way with a punchline.
But her good friend, Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane , was eager to showcase the actress’s comic side.
The pair team up in the comedy A Million Ways to Die in the West , out May 30.
“The most flattering thing you could say to me is that I could be a match to him,” Theron, 38, tells PEOPLE in this week’s issue. “I am a huge fan and have been for many, many years.”
“He’s definitely the kind of person that from afar fascinates me. Then you have this opportunity to know someone, and when they don’t let you down, that’s such a gift. The thing you remember when you’re 80 and lying on your deathbed is that. I’ll remember the friendship and working with Seth on this movie.”
MacFarlane, 40, says of their bond, “We had said ‘Hi’ here and there. But it was so quickly into the process, I felt like she was someone I’d been working with my entire life. I really felt like I made a lifelong friend.”

Seth MacFarlane Answers the Web's Most Searched Questions
Released on 05/24/2022
Hi, I'm Seth Macfarlane.
And this is the Wired Autocomplete Interview.
[light comical music]
I'm from New England.
We only respond to negative criticism.
If you wanna [beep] me, I'm here.
Did Seth Macfarlane work on 'Johnny Bravo?'
I did work on Johnny Bravo.
That was actually where I got my start
at Hanna-Barbera/Cartoon Network.
I was a writer and part-time storyboard artist
for Johnny Bravo for Season 1.
And then, they fired us all and got some new guys,
and, you know, that's when the show went south.
Did Seth Macfarlane draw 'Family Guy?'
I did way back when.
My major was Animation in school,
so I designed the characters.
I think it's safe to say they were improved
by other more talented artists,
but the initial designs were mine.
Did Seth Macfarlane leave 'Family guy?'
Stepped away around 2011 or so,
when I started doing Ted
and that was when I kind of handed it off
to the show runners who've been running it ever since.
Yeah, these days, I do voiceover on Family Guy,
but that's really about it.
Did Seth Macfarlane sing in 'Sing?'
Same word, both a verb and a noun.
Actually, yeah, I did.
I sang My Way and a couple of other Sinatra tunes
for the fabulous motion picture, Sing.
Did Seth Macfarlane make 'The Simpsons?'
I fuckin' wish. No, I did not make The Simpsons.
I have a lot of very good friends at The Simpsons,
Matt Groening is a friend and Al Jean,
and Mike Reiss, and Mike Scully.
And those guys, [clears throat]
that was [clears throat] actually legitimate throat clear.
I wasn't trying to undercut what I just said.
The Simpsons definitely had an influence on my work.
And I think on the work of every animated show
that came afterwards, they rewrote the rule book.
So, no, I did not, but hopefully, you still like me.
What does Seth Macfarlane look like?
What are you a fuckin' idiot? [laughs]
What blank Seth Macfarlane blank?
This is like I'm on the Match Game here.
Know what that is kids?
Know what the Match Game is?
Gene Rayburn, nothing?
What voices does Seth Macfarlane do?
I know what you're asking
and I'll bark like a seal for you.
I do Peter. I do Stewie.
I do Brian, and I do Quagmire.
So those are the voices that I do
for, and Stan, and Roger.
What is Seth Macfarlane working on now?
I am working on The Orville, which premieres June 2nd.
And I'm also working on Ted,
which is a television series for Peacock based on the films.
The movie, Ted, I don't know if Ted is a film.
It's a movie.
What awards has Seth Macfarlane won?
Softball questions.
Yeah, a handful of Emmys, like the Man-Show awards.
Right, no, the Spike TV awards.
One of those dude channels that used to be around.
I got something from them that had antlers on it.
That's still in my house.
What movies did Seth Macfarlane direct?
Directed three movies, Ted, Ted 2,
and A Million Ways to Die in The West,
which is a very concise title
that if I had to do over again,
I would listen to the executives
and come up with something shorter.
Yeah, that's that's those questions.
Who was Seth Macfarlane on 'Gilmore Girls?'
I think I was a graduating college student.
I was [laughs] literally, just taking,
taking shots at Lorelai Gilmore.
And then. I think my sister and I sang
a rendition of Michael, Row The Boat Ashore.
I think that was the extent of my Gilmore Girls tenure.
I was friends with Amy Palladino and Dan Palladino.
So, it was a little bit of nepotism.
Dan Palladino used to run Family Guy with me,
and so, when he left to go do Gilmore Girls,
he took me with him, I guess.
What college did Seth Macfarlane go to?
Attend, you also could have said.
I went to the Rhode Island School of Design, superb school.
They trained me to make Family Guy,
which I'm sure, you know, they regret at this stage,
but, yeah, loved RISDI, loved my experience.
Great place, highly recommended.
Why does Seth Macfarlane hate Tucson?
It's not Tucson that I hate.
It's it's all [laughs] of Arizona.
Does Seth Macfarlane own Hulu?
I do not own Hulu.
I have a subscription to Hulu.
If things keep going better,
I'm gonna get the one without the commercials.
Has Seth Macfarlane been on Broadway?
I have not been on Broadway.
No, I remember years ago getting offer
to come to Spamalot,
but I was too busy making Family Guy
and as attractive as that offer was,
the timing didn't work out.
But it's not out of the realm of possibility.
I'm certainly open to it.
Why did Seth Macfarlane make 'American Dad?'
Because Family Guy got canceled in 2002, or thereabouts.
Created American Dad and then of course,
Family Guy came back.
It was never my intention to have two animated shows
on the air at the same time.
And I figured, Well, it's all right.
One of them will die, eventually.
And here we are years later [laughs]
and they're both still kickin'.
Is Seth Macfarlane nice?
I guess it depends on the hour of the day.
It's very early right now,
but generally, I try to be kind.
Is Seth Macfarlane vegan?
I'm trying to phase out of meat.
There's a Taco Bell late night now and then,
that kind of disrupts things.
But in general, I'd say that's probably where I'm headed.
Is Seth Macfarlane's friends with Mila Kunis?
We better be because she works for me.
So, [chuckles] this would not be good,
but yeah, no, she's a good egg. We're close.
Is Seth Macfarlane friends with Ryan Reynolds?
Yeah, I'm also friends with Ryan Reynolds.
Yeah, these are like really,
you guys could be digging a lot deeper.
This is the next one.
When did Seth Macfarlane host SNL?
I think it was what? 2013?
Does that sound about right? 2013?
It was before Ted?
No, it was after Ted.
Yeah, after Ted, so 2013.
I think the musical guest was Frank Ocean that night.
When did Seth Macfarlane become famous?
Right now. Like right here, now.
Because of this Wired Autocomplete Interview,
I'm now officially famous.
When did Seth Macfarlane start singing?
I've been singing since I was a little kid.
I was in a church choir if you can believe that.
I think probably, from the age of five years old,
I was singing.
When does, So, we're going to the Present Tense now.
When does 'The Orville' take place?
The Orville takes place in the 25th century.
I think our pilot was 2417, was the date.
So, yeah. There you go.
How is Seth Macfarlane?
Oh, you're asking how I am?
[Staff] Yeah. How are you?
I'm fine, I'm alright.
How did Seth Macfarlane get his start?
I got my start at Hanna-Barbera,
which was the very famous cartoon studio
that did Scooby Doo, The Flintstones,
The Jetsons, did a little bit
of work on the show called, Dexter's Lab,
before I got my real break running
Ace Ventura, The Animated Series.
How did Seth Macfarlane get Charlize Theron to,
Let's just leave this one.
I don't know what's under there.
Oh, to be on 'The Orville?'
Oh, well, that's that puts a different paint job on this.
Charlize and I are very close.
We're very, very good friends.
And it just, I rolled the dice
that maybe she was just as cool
as I thought she was and turned out she was.
How does Seth Macfarlane know Patrick Stewart?
I was a fan of Patrick Stewart for many years,
but I don't remember exactly how I met him.
I had a couple of friends who wrote for Star Trek.
I think I may have met him that way.
I don't remember how it came about, I guess,
I guess we, I dunno,
we have the same accountant or something?
I don't, it doesn't, it's gone.
It's gone.
Seth Macfarlane, full name.
Seth Woodbury Macfarlane.
Seth Macfarlane, 'William Shatner' impression?
Seth Macfarlane, 'William Shatner' impression.
Seth Macfarlane, favorite movie.
The Sound of Music. Can you believe that?
Who would've thought? The Sound of mother fuckin' Music.
Seth Macfarlane, shoe size?
11 and a half is probably where it averages out.
You know, there's a couple of brands
where it's been like a 12.
Seth Macfarlane is a genius.
No, no, no, no, no, no, no. [laughs]
Hardly. I'm from New England.
So this is positive, so it does nothing for me.
If you wanna shit on me, I'm here.
That's it. Okay.
What do I think about these searches?
I think they're hugely imaginative.
I do wish I owned Hulu.
Yeah, I do wish I owned Hulu.
