Arnold Palmer is many things to many people...world famous golf immortal and sportsman, highly-successful business executive, prominent advertising spokesman, skilled aviator, talented golf course designer and consultant, devoted family patriarch and a man with a down-to-earth common touch that has made him one of the most popular and accessible public figures in history.

His popularity and success grew with the tremendous golf boom in the latter half of the 20th Century to heights few ever anticipated and they have been recognized in countless ways over the years. Certainly each contributed to the other, a fact given recognition when he was named "Athlete of the Decade" for the 1960s in a national Associated Press poll. Before, during and after that great decade, the famous golfer amassed 92 championships in professional competition of national or international stature. Sixty-two of the victories came on the U.S. PGA Tour, starting with the 1955 Canadian Open.

Besides the magnificent performance record, his magnetic personality and unfailing sense of kindness and thoughtfulness to everybody with whom he comes in contact have endeared him to millions throughout the world and led to the informal formation of the largest non-uniformed "military" organization in existence -- Arnie's Army. Seven of his victories came in what the golfing world considers the four major professional championships. He won the Masters Tournament four times, in 1958, 1960, 1962 and 1964; the U.S. Open in spectacular fashion in 1960 at Cherry Hills Country Club in Denver and the British Open in 1961 and 1962. He came from seven strokes off the pace in the final round in that U.S. Open win and finished second in four other Opens after that. Among the majors, only the PGA Championship eluded him. He finished second in the PGA three times.

Arnie's springboard to professional fame and fortune was his victory in the U.S. Amateur Championship in 1954. He turned professional a few months later. His hottest period was a four-year stretch from 1960 to 1963 when he landed 29 of his titles and collected almost $400,000 at a time when the purses were minute by today's standards. He was the leading money-winner in three of those years and twice represented the in the prestigious Ryder Cup Match during that time, serving in 1963 as the victorious captain.

It was also during this period that his rapidly-growing business interests got their start, through the impetus of Palmer himself and with the guidance and efforts of his business manager, the late Mark McCormack, and his wide-ranging organization. Arnold is president of Arnold Palmer Enterprises, a multi-division structure encompassing much of his global commercial activity that is centered in Cleveland.  He has been involved in automobile and aviation service firms over the years including a car dealership in his Latrobe (PA) hometown.

Arnold is president and sole owner (since 1971) of Latrobe Country Club and president and principal owner of the Bay Hill Club and Lodge, Orlando, FL, which he and a group of associates acquired in 1970. Bay Hill hosts the annual Arnold Palmer Invitational Presented by MasterCard, on the PGA Tour. In 1999 Arnold and a group of investors purchased the famed Pebble Beach golf complex on the California coast. He also is tournament professional and member of the Board of Directors of Laurel Valley Golf Club, Ligonier, PA, with which he has been affiliated since its founding in the late 1950s.

Palmer is consultant to The Golf Channel in Orlando, which went on the air on cable networks in January, 1995. Another important facet of his activities involves the Arnold Palmer Design Company, which is based at the Bay Hill Club and Lodge. Since the mid-1960s, Palmer has put his stamp on more than 200 new courses throughout the nation and world. His modest business empire and golfing activities keep Palmer on the move much of the year, most of the travel in his Cessna Citation X jet aircraft. He was recognized in 1999 for his contributions to aviation and his Western Pennsylvania community when the Westmoreland County Airport at Latrobe was renamed the Arnold Palmer Regional Airport. He is a member of the Westmoreland County Airport Authority.

Palmer was born on September 10, 1929, in Latrobe, a small industrial town in Western Pennsylvania at the foothills of the Allegheny Mountains some 50 miles east of Pittsburgh. He still lives there during the warm months of the year, but spends the fall and winter months at his homes at Bay Hill and at the Tradition Golf Club in La Quinta, California. He has numerous active and honorary memberships in clubs throughout the world, including famed Augusta National in, St. Andrews in, Pine Valley in New Jersey, Winged Foot in New York and Oakmont in Pittsburgh.

The golfing great has been the recipient of countless honors, the symbolic plaques, trophies and citations scattered throughout his personal, club and business worlds, the epitome coming in 2004 when he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President George W. Bush at a White House ceremony. He has received virtually every national award in golf and after his great 1960 season both the Hickok Professional Athlete of the Year and Sports Illustrated's Sportsman of the Year trophies. He is a charter member of the World Golf Hall of Fame and a member of the American Golf Hall of Fame at Foxburg, PA, and the PGA Hall of Fame in Florida. He is chairman of the USGA Members Program and served as honorary national chairman of the March of Dimes Birth Defects Foundation for 20 years. He played a major role in the fund-raising drive in the 1980s that led to the creation of the Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children and Women in Orlando, now a part of the Arnold Palmer Medical Center. A long-time member of the board of directors of Latrobe Area Hospital, he staged a major annual fund-raising golf event for that institution for six years that led to the formation of the Latrobe Area Hospital Charitable Foundation.

The saga of Arnold Palmer began when he was four years old, swinging his first set of golf clubs, cut down by his father, Milfred J. (Deacon) Palmer, who worked at Latrobe Country Club from 1921 until his death in 1976, much of that time as both golf professional and course superintendent.  Before long, Arnie was playing well enough to beat the older caddies at the club.  He began caddying himself when he was 11 and worked at almost every job at the club in later years.

The strongly-built young man concentrated on golf in high school, soon was dominating the game in Western Pennsylvania and twice won the Pennsylvania high school championship He won his first of five West Penn Amateur Championships when he was 17, competed successfully in national junior events and went to Wake Forest University (then College), where he became No. 1 man on the golf team and one of the leading collegiate players of that time. Deeply affected by the death in an auto accident of his close friend and classmate, Bud Worsham, younger brother of 1947 U.S. Open Champion Lew Worsham, Arnold withdrew from college during his senior year and began a three-year hitch in the Coast Guard. His interest in golf rekindled while he was stationed in Cleveland.  He was working there as a salesman and playing amateur golf after his discharge from the service and brief return to Wake Forest when he won the U.S. Amateur in 1954 following his second straight victory in the Ohio Amateur earlier that summer.

It was during that period that he met Winifred Walzer at a tournament in Eastern Pennsylvania. They were married shortly after he turned professional in the fall of 1954 and Winnie traveled with him when he joined the pro tour in early 1955.  Mrs. Palmer died of cancer on November 20, 1999.  Mr. Palmer and his second wife, Kathleen (Kit) Gawthrop, were married in a private ceremony in Hawaii on January 26, 2005.  He underwent successful prostate cancer surgery in 1997 and has become a strong advocate of programs supporting cancer research and early detection.

The Palmer family consists of two daughters -- Peggy Palmer Wears and Amy Palmer Saunders, who lives and, with husband Roy, oversees operations at the Bay Hill Club and Latrobe Country Club; four granddaughters, Emily Schneider, Katherine Anne Spears, Anne James and Anna Flexer Wears; two grandsons, Samuel Palmer Saunders and wife, Kelly, and William Gray Palmer Wears, and ten great grandchildren.  Mr. Palmer’s second wife has three children – son Al Gawthrop III and daughters Lynn Bouck and Blair Miller, all living in the Denver area – and eight grandchildren.  Arnold's brother, Jerry, who succeeded their father as course superintendent at Latrobe CC, was general manager for many years and now is a member of his personal office staff, and sisters, Lois Jean Tilley and Sandra Sarni, live in their home area in Western Pennsylvania.  Their mother, Doris, passed away in 1979 after a long, brave battle against crippling arthritis.   ARNOLD PALMER'S PROFESSIONAL CAREER SUMMARY 1955 THROUGH 2005

Arnold Palmer Forged Irons: How Good Are/Were They?

I am curious about the old-school Arnold Palmer irons, most notably The Standard irons. When I started playing golf in 1990 I did see a few of those sets around, but over time they gradually disappeared. I suppose that Arnie's forgings simply fell through the cracks as people were joining the Mizuno bandwagon? I mean, if the muscleback The Standard irons were so good, word of mouth would have people keep asking for them. My first forged sets were Golden Rams, and those clubs were in the bags of Watson, Price, Floyd, Mize and quite a few other pros simply because they were coveted. Through the 90's I spoke with many golfers who loved MP-14, MP-29, Tour Blade, Tour Grind, Tour Model, Tour Action, Tour Edition, Apex, VIP, and nearly every Japanese forging out there. Arnold Palmer The Standard? I can't recall any golfer saying anything about that club, let alone even mention it. If Arnie's clubs weren't so popular, maybe they didn't feel very good. For those of you who did own a set of muscleback The Standard irons, I ask how they felt when struck in the middle. If you answer that they felt like nirvana, I must ask this follow-up question: why weren't they so popular?

I have a set of the Arnold Palmer The Standard 85 irons. So far they are my favorite of the hundreds of iron sets I have owned.

Hit these at the range a few days ago. They earned a place in the “moderns” rotation. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Yeah the Palmer Shot Makers from Wilson were a retail line.  I think the Sneads were the same. Nothing wrong with that I steered away from those as to I could get similar vintage pro lines for no

Good thread - interested to see what develops. I think it was Kirasdad who was playing the Standard 85s last year. From what I can recall, he really rated them.

I have a set of the Standard '85's and love them. They look like butter knives but are fairly forgiving and feel great. I currently have 3-PW and am searching for the Up and Down wedge and Sand Wedge in decent shape. To be honest I have no idea about the popularity of them (or lack thereof)..

When the Standards were produced, Wilson Staffs were the clubs to have. According to Richard in the Staff thread, over 50% usage at one point. Not a lot of room for anyone else at that point.

I'd heard it said the choice of 370 shafts in the Standards was a sticking point for some pros. This was offered by someone who didn't quite seem to understand the actual differences between the two, and was heavily biased, so I was unsure of taking his word. ;)

I've owned all three editions, they're all quite excellent IMHO. Fairly sharp leading edge, which can be a problem for some. I found them surprisingly forgiving of toe hits. Feel was quite a bit like Wilson Staffs IMHO.

Have given thought to looking for a set for myself, as I've unloaded all three sets I've had.

Nessism

My first ever set of new clubs was a set of Palmer Peerless blades, 1-SW. They were being phased out of production at that time, 1985 or 1986, and I got a great deal. I had just graduated college that year and was thrilled with the pickup.

They used Accels and Pollack (Apollo) shafts, with a "D" flex, which means they were half way between R and S. I loved those clubs, particularly the 1-iron. For some reason that club and I just plain got along.

For some reason I thought they were cast, but most info I've found on the internet say forged. There was no "forged" reference imprinted on the heads.

At any rate, I've got a soft spot in my heart for Palmer/First Flight/Pro Group clubs and I've got my radar up just in case the right set comes along.

Ping G425 irons w/Accra ICWT 2.0 95 Ping Glide wedges w/Recoil 110 Ping Redwood Anser - the "real deal!"

Oh, and those Arnold Palmer Limited Edition heads were Chinese made. They are beautiful but in my view they are not part of the "real" Palmer club heritage. Sort of an extension of the "Peerless" brand of components that carried on for several years after Palmer's club company folded up shop. The original "Peerless" clubs were those blades mentioned above, but he carried the name forward into CB designs. At some point Arnold sold the rights to the Peerless brand, and to a few head designs that were popular in his last few years. The new owners continued to sell Peerless brand components, including some newer designs even, but they eventually went out of business and I think Hireko wound up with the Peerless name.

Here are some Arnold Palmer wedges and a 1-iron made for tour pro George Burns - GB on every sole.

Some clubs have Standard logo, but most don't.

Up And Down Wedges (60* wide sole, low bounce)- Sand Wedges (56* DynaPower grind) - Strong Sand Wedge/ Gap Wedges (52-54* narrower sole high bounce, cavity backs) - 1-iron.

Though it's not obvious from my amateurish photos, the grinds on these are distinctive. All the wedges have been ground to minimize the hosel thickness where they meet the club heads. This is thought to let the hosels cut thru rough more easily. The soles on the UpAndDown 60*s are the widest with 6-8* bounce, I estimate. The SWs are just like DynaPowers. The GAP SWs have narrow soles and maybe 12* bounce. Each example of each loft is virtually exactly the same, again indicating they were made to a specific order from the pro. I should also mention that all are slightly upright and 1/2" long, as G Burns was about 6'4". All have Green Victory grips and one of my favorite shafts ever - Dynamic Gold S-500.

Unfortunately Palmer's manufacturing company was sub-standard, as was Players, and Hogan wasn't worth a hoot after Callaway bought them. Not even sure Y Callaway made the purchase as they weren't interested in forgings.......That's why it'll be interesting to see what happens with Taylor Made and Titleist in the near future.......

birly-shirly

What happened with Hogan is no secret. Callaway bought Spalding for their technology and market share in balls, Hogan was just a sub-brand within the Spalding portfolio.

Just the opposite of what happened with me the other week. I saw a beautiful leather bag sitting outside an antique shop, full of Slazenger Hogan Precision irons. For £10, I bought the lot, and when I got home discovered a pocket in the bag was full of vintage golf balls. 1.62 Dunlop 65s to be precise, several of which were wrapped in a pair of very worn and holey knee-length woollen socks which I think were intended to complement tweed britches.

Whilst I'm sure you're right that the Callaway purchase finished off that incarnation of Hogan, I wouldn't discount the quality of the clubs from that time. The Apex blades put out by Callaway, basically a re-issue of the classic '73 Apex, are apparently very good.

Spoke my piece on The Standard Irons from ProGroup/ First Flight/Palmer on another thread.

Great RH irons, but very few LH ones, and even those weren't as good translation as others like Hogan and Golden Ram.

Have Arnold Palmer's signature on my LH Standard 1 iron.

You must know by now Teevons retired the trophy...... :taunt:

And since someone asked.....

To my knowledge, Pro Group/First Flight/Palmer did NOT make any LH Standard Forged Cavity Back iron models.

In his early PGA Tour days, Steve Stricker was a FF/Palmer Standard staffer who played the Clay Long designed PHD irons.

I recently acquired a set of arnol palmer

clubs with signature on the sole and pg on thetip. They have a very pure nothin fancy design and they hit extremely consistent

they were in a closet for ten years and look almost unplayed and i bought them

i cant find out if they were forged or cast or what year they were made but it would tak 5

bills to get them from me i love them

the first blades i have ever hit consistently

there are old bargains out there golf clubs are one step away from only lasting a short while

before these new diapragm faces fail

so if you want what was the accepted standard

and can stull outperform ( shot shaping) you better act quick these old clubs are going to get valuable unless you can afford a nee set every year

Hot Z was a very good bag to carry as a young HS caddy. I found out fast never go near a Wilson and Haig staff bag with 2 inch razor strap weighing 40 lbs with the umbrella. Also beware the Spalding leather staff bags with the S stitched in on the side.

Does anyone know anything about what years Wilson made Arnold Palmer Shot Maker irons?  Picked a set up at a thrift store 3-9 irons with original leather reminder grips in great shape.  Minimal wear on the faces and original rust free reflex shafts and leather grips still have some tackiness to them and no cracks.   Just trying to find out some more information on them.  Haven’t had much luck thus far.

I'm thinking these were offered in retail stores and not sold in pro shops. Most likely 60's vintage.

Yeah the Palmer Shot Makers from Wilson were a retail line.  I think the Sneads were the same.

Nothing wrong with that I steered away from those as to I could get similar vintage pro lines for not much more in today's dollar/market.

Quick story though about store line clubs.  I ran into two golfers at the local par 3 last fall.  The group ahead of me was real slow and these two guys caught up to me at a tee box, they were actually playing solo as well to give you an idea of how backed up we were.  One was a guy in his 40s with a brand new bag of Callaways.  The other was a guy closer to my age in his 30s or late 20s.  He had a old bag with a shopping cart as a cart.  He pulled out a few Sam Snead clubs at the next two tees and hit the greens each time.  Won't tell you where Mr. Callaway's balls went.  But I will say that was serious moment for me in realizing the power of a well struck vintage blade and with skill behind it.

My favorite putter is the Arnold Palmer Personal.  I think they date to 1964-1966ish.  I'd love a set of the Tru Matics with the similar "charger" shafts.

Marching Toward A Better Tomorrow

Arnie's Workshop

Other than trying to perfect his swing and putting stroke, perhaps only one thing held as strong an obsession throughout Arnie’s golfing career—tweaking and creating clubs in his workshop.

A Love For Club Tinkering, Born Out Of Necessity

Beginning at the age of 11, Arnold Palmer won Latrobe Country Club’s caddie tournament five times. With Latrobe’s fairways as his laboratory, young Arnold began experimenting with hand-me-down clubs from his mother and father. These included a Walter Hagen driver, Patty Berg brassie and Wilson Top Notch flat-backed blades. Though his favorite shot has always been a draw, he loved learning how to hit and move the ball differently to work his shot. In fact he said, "I became obsessed with the idea of practicing." Other than trying to perfect his swing and putting stroke, perhaps only one thing held as strong an obsession throughout Arnie’s golfing career—tweaking and creating clubs in his workshop.

How Does This Club Feel Today?

For Arnold, it’s all about how a club feels in his hand on that particular day, not how he played the day before. H e was constantly fiddling with his clubs to create the ‘feel’ he desired.

Over 10,000 Golf Clubs

When Arnie first began working at the Latrobe course as a youngster, he didn’t always have enough money to purchase new clubs, much less the exact models he wanted. Instead he was constantly fiddling with his clubs to create the ‘feel’ he desired. When you consider the stern advice Arnie’s father, Deke, gave him about his golf swing after turning pro, this never-ending search was a bit contradictory. Says Arnie, "My dad said the quickest way to wind up back in Latrobe was by making changes to your swing."

While Arnie held fast to that admonition, he never resisted the idea of constantly trying out new types of clubs. Arnie has even won tournaments where he played with a different set of irons each day of the event. For him, it’s all about how a club feels in his hand on that particular day, not how he played the day before. Just how serious is Arnie about putting clubs to the test? Today his private collection of clubs numbers over 10,000 and is one of the world’s largest. Due to space availability, there are only about 2,000 putters and clubs in his workshop and the rest of the collection is stored in a warehouse facility on the Latrobe property. And these aren’t just any old clubs.

Experimenting

Arnold would experiment with different combinations, sometimes building over 20 different clubs of varying shafts, lengths, lofts and grip sizes.

Callaway Ambassador

To meet his demanding specifications, Arnie would exclusively customize Callaway clubs in the workshop. For example, after testing a new Callaway driver model on the range, he’d go back to the workshop and experiment with different combinations, sometimes building over 20 different clubs of varying shafts, lengths, lofts and grip sizes. His tastes would change after any given round or bucket of balls at the range.

The workshop, attached to his Latrobe office, is outfitted with most of the same tools and equipment as the Callaway manufacturing facility. It’s here you’d often find Arnie and his long-time employee, Cori, adjusting a club’s loft a few degrees, switching to a firmer shaft, or building a new set from scratch. And because he was so concerned with the way a club felt in his hand, he often changed grips from one day to the next. The leather Lamkin Grips that Arnie always used could be easily rewrapped for customization. His search for the perfect club was not only an endless pursuit—it was a labor of love for Arnie.

An awesome inside look at Arnold Palmer’s legendary workshop

arnold palmer tour golf clubs

Callaway’s Chad Coleman, A.J. Voelpel and company visited golf Shangri-La: Arnold Palmer’s Latrobe home and warehouse.

Not surprisingly, they came away with some fantastic content after touring Mr. Palmer’s office, workshop and gigantic storage facility with the King’s long-serving personal assistant, Doc Griffin.

Michael Block spotted with full set of TaylorMade “Proto” irons at Valhalla

arnold palmer tour golf clubs

Editor’s note: This is an excerpt from a piece our Andrew Tursky originally wrote for PGATour.com’s Equipment Report.  Head over there for the full article.

On Monday at the 2024 PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club, Block had a full set of TaylorMade “Proto” irons in the bag.

Block is the first player of many on the PGA TOUR to bag a set of the mysterious “Proto” irons. Rory McIlroy first switched into a “Proto” 4-iron at the Valero Texas Open, and Collin Morikawa followed suit at the 2024 RBC Heritage. Block isn’t using just the 4-iron, though, he’s using a full set to go along with a TaylorMade Stealth UDI driving iron.

Speaking with GolfWRX.com on Monday at the PGA Championship, Block revealed the full backstory.

“I hit a couple super “Proto” irons when I was at the Kingdom (TaylorMade’s fitting facility in Southern California) a couple months ago, and it was a 9-iron that didn’t have any badges or anything on it,” Block said. “I had no idea what it was … It was very similar to what I was using back then, you know, my old MCs, and very similar from the top. I hit it and absolutely loved it. For me to even think about switching irons from the last 11-12 years is crazy.

“I got this set about two weeks ago, and I’m working my way into them. I hit them more solid; it comes off the face more solid. Much higher. I think they’re still slightly too upright for me, so they’re being bent a degree flatter, because they’re going a little too high for me and drawing a little too much. When that starts to happen, I start to drop the club under and compensate too much, so I’m getting them flattened slightly, and I’m going to test them on the range again, and hopefully have them in play on Thursday…

“They go further, and they go higher … that combination is kind of a no-brainer. If I can take a 5-iron from 204 rather than a 4-iron, it’s good on me. It’s going to help me out for sure, especially at a major with the pin locations. Having that height coming in, that descent angle is going to be huge.”

With such new irons in the bag, after using the same irons for over a decade, surely you’d think there will be a bit of a learning curve. Block, however, is finding immediate comfort with the new “Proto” irons.

After a slow start to his final round, McIlroy tallied an eagle and two birdies on the back nine and his fourth major championship. Take a look at the clubs he played a decade ago in Kentucky.

The PGA Tour has a winning strategy against LIV. The Arnold Palmer Invitational was proof

ORLANDO, FLORIDA - MARCH 05: Kurt Kitayama of the United States smiles as he walks off the 18th green after winning during the final round of the Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard at Arnold Palmer Bay Hill Golf Course on March 05, 2023 in Orlando, Florida. (Photo by Michael Reaves/Getty Images)

Editor’s note: On June 6, 2023, the PGA Tour , LIV Golf and DP World Tour announced they were merging commercial operations under common ownership. Here is a timeline of between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf .

ORLANDO — The week began with more change.

It ended with something familiar: a TaylorMade hanging over the edge of a cup, a coin marker sliding next to it and a 30-year-old veteran of far-flung minor league golf series nearly doubling his career earnings with his first PGA Tour win.

In between was more validation that finally the PGA Tour has figured this out. It is not solely reliant on one man to lift all boats. It is not lost in the week-to-week monotony of a schedule created to serve everyone but totally pleased no one.

However it happened, under whatever circumstances necessitated this, the PGA Tour works right now. The designated events deliver. First, it was Scottie Scheffler chasing down Jon Rahm at the Phoenix Open. Then it was Rahm and Max Homa going head-to-head down the stretch at the Genesis Invitational. And on Sunday it was Kurt Kitayama staring down a final Arnold Palmer Invitational leaderboard that included a dozen names and enough star power to fuel a Ryder Cup to win one tournament (and $3.6 million) for the Tour journeyman supposedly left behind in this new era.

“That’s what we’re trying to do here,” Rory McIlroy said Saturday, peeking at the leaderboard in his right corner. “It’s great.”

On Wednesday, before a tournament ball went into the air at Bay Hill, a GolfWeek report served notice of Designated Events 2.0: eight tournaments with smaller fields (70-78 players) and no cuts, the promise of a guaranteed payday. There was predictable haranguing over this, the comparison to LIV and the bygone World Golf Championships, and the desire for at least a small cut, even if just a few bodies. Call this another Tiger Woods Rule: Should he ever tee it up in one of these, it behooves the PGA Tour to make sure spectators can watch him all four days, whether he’s 3-under or 5-over.

There was considerable hesitation and bemoaning about it throughout the media center, the old golf writers in their worn major championship polos wondering aloud what has become of the PGA Tour while the reactionary voices online did the same. You can hear similar conversations throughout any other niche sport’s media center or press row.

This is a group by and large not prone to seeing the necessity of evolution, that prefer the comfortable and resist change. Of course, they’re worried about the future of the PGA Tour stop that means the most to them personally. At face, there’s nothing wrong about that — I wonder if the Sanderson Farms Championship will survive another round of sponsorship issues and a new Tour schedule. But we have to see the whole picture. To acknowledge that without dramatic, drastic evolution the upstart wins and the whole thing is lost.

Would any of this have come without the threat of LIV? No. Almost assuredly not. “I think in general if a company or a product doesn’t have competition the incentive to innovate is low,” Patrick Cantlay said. “So now with competition, it makes everyone want to look inside to see how they could make their product better.”

All the sauce! pic.twitter.com/NcfloAc3rJ — Kyle Porter (@KylePorterCBS) March 5, 2023

The PGA Tour’s designated events do just that. I followed Thursday the threesome of Rahm, Xander Schauffele and Collin Morikawa — the No. 1, 6 and 10 players in the world per OWGR, respectively. Rahm had started the day with three straight birdies, then slowed down as he made the turn, but still swaggered his way to the 10th tee box, a bear cutting a figure that demanded your attention. Which he did, a considerable gallery following him as he played a different version of the game than either of his playing partners. When Schauffele finally outdrove Rahm on the 18th hole, the response from Rahm was an approach to five feet of the water-side pin, the club twirl on a 4-under three-hole finish that gave him the first-round lead.

But it’s not just having one first- and second-round pairing of that star power. McIlroy, alongside Homa, was in the group behind them. Scheffler and Justin Thomas were together in the other wave, a group ahead of Jordan Spieth. When you’re on the grounds, it feels worth the price of admission. And then all of it coalesces into standout weekend leaderboards, when the most eyes are on your product on television. That Rahm went from the first-round leaderboard to an afterthought with rounds of 76 of Friday and Saturday was not a game-changer, not when McIlroy, Cantlay, Spieth and Scheffler all entered Bay Hill’s closing stretch with a chance to win.

LIV Golf had true startup energy, a disruptor that left the PGA Tour flat-footed and arrogant. But membership seems stable now, the factions clearly set. LIV has its thing. The PGA Tour has its. The marketplace can sort out which one more people will care about.

This is the third designated event of 2023, and there’s a growing feeling that by elevating certain events, it also allows for those chosen to really develop their own flavor. The Genesis Invitational was the Tiger Woods Show. The WM Phoenix Open remains a party with some guys hitting golf balls in the middle of it.

As for the Arnold Palmer Invitational, they’re still working on it. The course is big and brawny and when the wind is howling can make a pro bend over at the waist in frustration like few other regular PGA Tour stops. But it lacks a certain flourish to it, and it can look and feel a lot like a (admittedly high end) resort course in a city that exists to service tourists. The distinction is in the name of the event, and the man whose image is plastered everywhere you look. Coming up on the seven-year anniversary of his death, is that enough? Golf and tradition are inextricably linked, but we’re also trying to look forward here.

arnold palmer tour golf clubs

It could be that part of the sell is tougher golf. Scheffler won the Phoenix Open at 19-under, Rahm the next week at Genesis at 17-under. Here at Bay Hill the swirling winds and slick greens combined to punish the poor shots while still making it possible for a player to go low. Kitayama started the final round at 9-under and won by standing, despite a triple-bogey on 9 mixed in. “Maybe a little European feel to it with the wind,” Viktor Hovland said Saturday, after a 66 that catapulted him to the lead. “You got some doglegs and crosswinds. It’s not always just about kind of bomb and gouge it.” McIlroy compared it to the annually toughest major. “It’s more like a U.S. Open,” McIlroy said. “I think that’s sort of how it feels with the thick rough and the firm greens.”

If you’re the type of golf fan that enjoys a well-earned par and takes joy in an unspeakably good player signing a card with a double bogey or two on it, this was the good stuff.

Kurt Kitayama earned his PGA Tour card in September 2021, after playing well in the Korn Ferry Finals. Before that he played professional golf in Canada. And Europe. The Asian Tour. The Sunshine Tour. Oh, and also on the Asian Development Tour, in Japan and Korea.

How about India? “I don’t think if that counts towards the Indian Open or something, but, yeah,” Kitayama said.

Any more? “Oh, yeah, China. I forgot about that one.”

This is the long path to this point, where you put on a red cardigan and cash a big check and realize you’re going to the Masters. It’s the story the PGA Tour has been selling for a long time, mentioned in the first few moments of Netflix’s “Full Swing,” in fact. “One week can change your life.”

But now it’s not the only thing the PGA Tour has. Kurt Kitayama won, and that’s a great thing made better by who he beat.

It’s on to the Players Championship now, the so-called fifth major. There’s a lot of those these days.

Scottie Scheffler spotted on range at PGA Championship

Change Text Size

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler showed up to the practice area at Valhalla Golf Club for this week’s PGA Championship on Monday afternoon.

Scheffler was listed in the PGA Championship field, but his status for the year’s second major was uncertain since it was so close to the due date for wife Meredith to deliver the couple’s first child. He has won four of his previous five starts, and his wife was visibly pregnant while attending the first two of those wins, the Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard and THE PLAYERS Championship in March. She was home in Dallas because of the approaching due date when Scottie won the Masters and RBC Heritage last month.

Scheffler’s return to competition marks the resumption of his dominant season. He is No. 1 by a wide margin in both the FedExCup and Official World Golf Ranking. Rory McIlroy is the only other player with multiple TOUR titles this season, and Scheffler’s four wins have all come in the biggest events thus far this year. In addition to his Masters victory, he successfully defended his PLAYERS title and won two Signature Events (Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard, RBC Heritage).

In March, Scheffler became the first player to win back-to-back titles at TPC Sawgrass . Then he won his second Masters , joining Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus as the only players to win multiple Masters and PLAYERS. Scheffler also became the fourth-youngest player to win multiple Masters, trailing only Woods, Nicklaus and Seve Ballesteros. Scheffler also won the Masters in 2022.

His RBC Heritage win made him the first player since Bernhard Langer in 1985 to win at Harbour Town the week after winning the Masters.

Scheffler said at Augusta National that plans were in place for him to leave immediately if Meredith went into labor. They were not needed, however, and Scheffler was able to play the following week in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.

Even after his layoff, Scheffler will be the favorite at Valhalla. He will be trying to do something that’s been accomplished just twice in the past 50 years, however. Woods (2002) and Jordan Spieth (2015) are the only players to win the year’s first two majors since Nicklaus did it in 1972.

PGA Championship 2024 props, golf odds: Expert reveals top PGA Tour prop bets, parlay picks for Valhalla

Mike mcclure locked in his expert pga golf prop picks and parlays for the pga championship 2024 at valhalla golf club.

tony-finau-usatsi.jpg

Since his miraculous victory at the 2019 Masters, Tiger Woods has completed just five of the 11 majors he's taken part in. His best finish over that stretch is a tie for 21st place, and a top-20 finish for Woods in this week's 2024 PGA Championship has +750 odds, which is not far off from Wyndham Clark's +800 PGA Championship odds to notch a top-five finish. Valhalla Golf Club hosts the year's second major, and Woods has a victory (2000) and a missed cut (2014) in his two previous PGA Championship starts at this course. Is this one of the 2024 PGA Championship props worth taking a chance on? Before locking in your 2024 PGA Championship prop picks or entering PGA Championship picks, you need to see what SportsLine DFS pro and PGA expert Mike McClure has to say .

McClure is a DFS legend with over $2 million in career winnings, and he's been red-hot on his PGA picks dating back to the PGA Tour restart in June of 2020. McClure uses his proprietary simulation model to analyze the field and crush his golf picks. He is up almost $9,000 on his best bets since the restart.

McClure's model predicted Scottie Scheffler would finish on top of the leaderboard at the 2024 Masters, the Arnold Palmer Invitational and The Players Championship this season. McClure also included Hideki Matsuyama in his best bets to win the 2024 Genesis Invitational. That bet hit at +9000, and for the entire tournament, McClure's best bets returned nearly $1,000.

The model also predicted Jon Rahm would be victorious at the 2023 Sentry Tournament of Champions and The American Express. At the 2023 Masters, the model was all over Rahm's second career major victory heading into the weekend. Rahm was two strokes off the lead heading into the third round, but the model still projected him as the winner. It was the second straight Masters win for the model, which also nailed Scheffler winning in 2022.

In addition, McClure's best bets included Nick Taylor (70-1) winning the 2023 RBC Canadian Open, Jason Day (17-1) winning outright at the 2023 AT&T Byron Nelson, and Rickie Fowler (14-1) finishing on top of the leaderboard at the 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic. This same model has also nailed a whopping 11 majors entering the weekend. Anyone who has followed McClure's picks has seen massive returns.

Now, McClure has dialed in on the PGA Championship golf tournament and just locked in his top prop picks and PGA predictions. You can only see McClure's PGA Championship 2024 prop picks at SportsLine .

Top 2024 PGA Championship prop picks

We can tell you that one of McClure's favorite PGA Championship prop picks is that Tony Finau has a better finish than Sam Burns at +100 odds. These two have combined for 11 PGA Tour victories but zero majors, however, Finau has been discernibly better at major tournaments than Burns. Finau has 13 top 25s across 31 major starts (41.9% of starts), while Burns has a single top 25 across 15 major appearances (6.7%).

Over the last six major championships, Burns didn't finish better than Finau in any of them. They had the same finish in two of the six, with Finau having a better finish in the other four. Additionally, Finau has just one missed cut over his last 18 PGA Tour starts, while Burns has two missed cuts over his last four tournaments. With the long game being a critical component to success at Valhalla, and with Finau ranking in the top 15 in both strokes gained: tee-to-green and strokes gained: approach the green, he's a much better bet than Burns, who ranks outside the top 50 in both metrics.  You can see who else to back at SportsLine .

How to make PGA Championship 2024 prop picks

McClure has also locked in a slew of other prop bets for the 2024 PGA Championship, including one that pays over 40-1 for a three-leg parlay. You can find out what it is, and check out all of McClure's PGA Championship prop picks at SportsLine .

Who wins the PGA Championship 2024, and which golf parlay should you target for over a 40-1 payout? Visit SportsLine now to get Mike McClure's PGA Championship 2024 prop picks, all from the golf expert who is up almost $9,000 on his best bets since 2020 , and find out.

Can Scottie Scheffler win the 2024 PGA Championship? Masters champion's odds explored

S cottie Scheffler is the outright favorite to win the 2024 PGA Championship. The World No.1 golfer arrives at Valhalla Golf Club on the back of four wins from five starts. Having won the Masters in April, Scheffler looks in hot form to take his second major title of the year.

According to SportsLine, Scheffler comes into the PGA Championship with 3-1 odds. The 27-year-old is followed by World No.2 Rory McIlroy with 6-1 odds. Defending champion Brooks Koepka sits third on the list with 10-1 odds.

Xander Schauffele (12-1), Ludvig Aberg (12-1) and Jon Rahm (14-1) are some other names Koepka will have to watch this weekend.

Scottie Scheffler has had a stellar season so far. Scheffler started off the 2024 PGA Tour season with a T5 finish at The Sentry. He finished T6 at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and T3 at the Phoenix Open, before winning the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

The ace golfer went on to win the Players Championship, the Masters and the RBC Heritage. A T2 finish at the Houston Open denied him a five-in-a-row win streak. It is pertinent to note that Scheffler has been off the greens for the past two weeks as he welcomed his first child.

The golfer arrived at Valhalla on Monday stating that he needed some prep before going into the major championship. Notably, Scheffler will also be with a new bagman as his caddie Ted Scott skipped the event to attend his daughter's graduation.

Scottie Scheffler is set to tee off on round 1 of the 2024 PGA Championship on Thursday, May 16 at 2:13 pm ET. The PGA Tour star will join Wyndham Clark and Brian Harman on the first tee at Valhalla. Notably, his group will follow the pairing of Rickie Fowler, Cameron Young and Jon Rahm on the greens.
