Here at Blue Planet Aquarium, we’re proud of our 12 year history working with various schools in the Chicagoland area. Here’s a list of our ten favorite school aquarium projects:

1.       CCA Academy – The video tells the story of a 575 gallon aquarium we donated to this West Side “Second Chance” School.  An incredible organization doing unbelievable work.

2.       Staying on topic of CCA, earlier this year we sent a 10 foot long, custom made terrarium to these same folks to serve not only as a room divider in the lunch room, but as a biotope of live plants and lizards.

3.       Wilma G. School – more about this wonderful school in our featured installation post!

4.       Oak Park Library – This 400 gallon aquarium in the kids’ books department is filled with colorful freshwater Cichlids and, in keeping with the library’s green initiative, uses all low voltage equipment.

5.       School libraries are a popular place for aquariums. To date, we have had 10 various aquarium installations in school libraries in and around the Chicago area.

6.       Smyth School – Our longest running school service client, this inner city school boasts 2 150 gallon freshwater aquariums in the school’s busiest hallway for all the students to enjoy.

7.       Penitentiary high school – Think about this: these kids are actually incarcerated but are still getting a high school education. With no exposure to the outside world, these kids need all the help they can get to succeed. We installed a 180 gallon freshwater aquarium along with an aquatic and land turtle enclosures that the kids were able to enjoy and learn from.

8.       Speaking of turtles, kids love them! We have literally supplied entire set-ups, service, or parts and supplies for dozens of school turtle tanks over the years!

9.       Xavier School – A client of ours from our earliest beginnings told us about a friend of his who was a science teacher at Xavier School and that if we ever had any used equipment or tanks to donate, this teacher would love to get his hands on them. We have sent truck-fulls of equipment to him over the years and he literally has been like a mad scientist with his creations!

10.   Chicago Public Schools – As the only vendor for Chicago Public Schools we have worked with countless schools on tons of projects over the years. It’s a relationship we are very proud of and thrilled to be part of!

School trips inspired by Blue Planet

2017-11-07T11:45:00+00:00

With Blue Planet being watched all over Britain since it hit our screens again a fortnight ago, we suggest some inspired trips to take your class on.

SEA LIFE Blackpool

Thanks to people like Sir David Attenborough, we’re learning more all the time about the planet’s deepest oceans, and there’s plenty of inspiration for school trips. There are many attractions across Britain giving children the chance to get close to ocean life to tie in with various subjects including Science and Geography. We look at a handful offering educational visits.

SEA LIFE Blackpoo l, London, Great Yarmouth and Birmingham are all wonderful aquariums that are home to hundreds of creatures from the deep. When visiting, children can identify the various species, study the colours and textures of their skins and find out more about the habitats they live in. New for schools at SEA LIFE Blackpool this year is a series of curriculum linked sessions. Schools can also take part in feeding demonstrations, get closer to the animals in the Ocean Tunnel and touch a starfish in the interactive rockpool.

Blue Planet Aquarium in Chester, offers school packs for Key Stages 1 to 4, providing hands-on activities, animal encounters and question and answer sessions. Classes will find an Underwater Shark Tunnel there allowing them a closer look, a Coral Cave with diverse colours and textures, and a Flooded Forest section where pupils can see fresh water fish from South America.

Deep Sea World in Fife, Scotland offers school trips and classes, along with teacher previews. The aquarium offers talks throughout the day and daily feeds which pupils can learn more about the way in which the sea creatures survive. The exhibits include Seals, Underwater Safari, Amazon, Piranha, Krakatoa, Lake Malawi, Rocky Shores and Amphibians.

Oceanarium

Pictured: Oceanarium in Bournemouth.

Oceanarium in Bournemouth offers different tour packages for schools; the Self-Guided Visit, whereby classes can peruse the attraction by themselves, the Guided Tour package where sessions will be led by a marine expert, adapted to Key Stages and chosen topics, and the Guided Tour and Interactive Session package which includes a guided tour and a session getting pupils hands-on with artefacts including turtle shells and shark jaws.

The National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth offers educational visits for all Key Stages with different packages available and catered to the needs of each group. Sessions can include an Interactive Tour or an Explorer Visit which is self-led and has access to all the daily talks, shows and feeds. Free teacher pre-visits are available too as well as there being coach drop-off points and facilities for lunch. Workshops are also available as extras, including Plastic Seas which investigates the marine ecosystem and Classifications and Food Webs. There is also an Our Blue Planet show which links to STEM subjects and highlights the conservation issues facing the oceans and their inhabitants.

Blue Planet II is currently on BBC One every Sunday at 8:00pm.

Dive with Sharks in Cheshire at Blue Planet Aquarium

blue planet aquarium school trips

Welcome to the Blue Planet Aquarium, a captivating underwater world located in Cheshire, North of England. This visitor guide will take you through the mesmerizing exhibits, thrilling experiences, and essential visitor information to ensure your visit is as enjoyable and memorable as possible. The Blue Planet Aquarium offers a unique glimpse into the mysteries of the oceans and provides an educational journey for all ages.

Discovering the underwater world

The heart of the Blue Planet Aquarium experience lies in its spectacular marine life displays. From the colorful coral reefs teeming with exotic fish to the eerie depths inhabited by mysterious creatures, each exhibit is designed to fascinate and educate visitors. The aquarium’s pride is its vast collection of sharks, making it one of the best places in Europe to come face-to-face with these magnificent predators. The underwater tunnel provides an immersive experience, allowing guests to walk beneath swimming sharks and rays, feeling as though they are part of this underwater realm.

What makes Blue Planet Aquarium one of Europe's best places for shark encounters?

Interactive experiences.

Beyond observing, the Blue Planet Aquarium offers several interactive experiences that bring visitors closer to marine life. The touch pools are a hit among younger visitors, where they can gently handle starfish and sea urchins under expert supervision. For those seeking more adrenaline-pumping activities, diving with sharks presents an unparalleled opportunity to dive into their world safely enclosed in a cage. These interactive sessions not only provide entertainment but also aim to foster a deeper understanding and respect for marine creatures.

Educational programs

Education is at the core of Blue Planet Aquarium’s mission. A variety of educational programs are tailored for different age groups, including school trips that align with national curriculum standards. These programs offer hands-on learning experiences about marine biology, conservation efforts, and the importance of protecting our oceans. The knowledgeable staff lead engaging presentations and workshops that inspire future generations to become stewards of our planet’s aquatic environments.

Visitor information

To make your visit as smooth as possible, here’s some essential visitor information. The Blue Planet Aquarium is open year-round, but opening hours may vary seasonally so checking their website before planning your visit is advisable. Tickets can be purchased online in advance for convenience and often at a discount compared to on-the-day prices at the door. There are facilities within the aquarium including a cafe serving refreshments and light meals, a gift shop for souvenirs, and ample parking space available on-site.

Making the most out of your visit

To fully enjoy everything Blue Planet Aquarium has to offer, consider arriving early to beat the crowds especially during weekends or school holidays when it can get quite busy. Allocate enough time to explore all exhibits without rushing – typically around 3-4 hours should suffice. Don’t miss scheduled feeding times or talks which are both entertaining and informative; these provide insights into animal behavior you might not observe otherwise.

  • Vast collection of marine life including exotic fish and predators like sharks.
  • Immersive underwater tunnel experience walking beneath swimming sharks.
  • Interactive touch pools allowing close encounters with certain marine species.
  • Diving with sharks experience for thrill-seekers.
  • Educational programs catering to various age groups promoting conservation awareness.
  • Facilities include cafe, gift shop, and ample parking space.
