2023 UCI BMX Racing World Cup: Preview, full schedule and how to watch

Sylvain André and Laura Smulders are the defending champions as the 13th edition of the World Cup series kicks off in Türkiye on Saturday 3 June and Sunday 4 June.

BMX

The 2023 UCI BMX Racing World Cup begins this weekend, on 3 and 4 June, with the world’s best BMX racers set to battle in Sakarya, Türkiye, for the first two rounds of the season. The same location hosted the last four stages of the 2021 series.

The Netherlands, France, and Argentina will hold the remaining eight rounds, as Sylvain André and Laura Smulders will try to defend their World Cup titles, which they sealed in Bogotá, Colombia, last year.

The World Cup circuit also offers riders an opportunity to earn points for their NOCs in the UCI BMX Racing Olympic rankings, which will count in the Paris 2024 qualifying.

Check out our preview of this year’s season and find out how to watch the action live.

How to qualify for BMX racing at Paris 2024. The Olympics qualification system explained

Women’s elite: laura smulders chasing sixth world cup title.

Five-time - and defending champion Smulders from the Netherlands goes into this season as the clear favourite.

Last year, the Olympic bronze medallist from London 2012 secured her 27 th victory at a World Cup event, and her lead in the overall standing was confirmed already before the last round.

Several riders will be challenging the dominance of 29-year-old Dutchwoman, including Zoé Claessens . The talented Swiss rider finished second in the overall standing last season, and also won silver at the 2022 UCI BMX World Championships.

Olympic champion Bethany Shriver is also aiming to improve upon her third place in last year's World Cup general classification. Two-time Olympic gold medallist Mariana Pajón is also one to watch. The Colombian has claimed the World Cup general classification three times in her career with the last victory in 2021.

USA's Alise Willoughby and Felicia Stancil could also perform strongly. Stancil claimed the World Championship title last year, while Willoughby won silver at Rio 2016 and claimed gold at the World Championships 2019 .

Men's elite: Who will challenge reigning champion Sylvain André?

Consistency was the key to Sylvain André 's overall win last year. The 2018 French world champion finished ahead of USA's Cameron Wood and Australian Izaac Kennedy , both of whom are looking to challenge last season’s winner again this year.

The Olympic champion of Tokyo 2020 Niek Kimmann of the Netherlands is also among the favourites, alongside his training partner and winner of the 2021 World Cup Simon Marquart from Switzerland.

Two-time Olympic bronze medallist Carlos Ramírez of Colombia, aka 'The Magician', is aiming to stand on the top of the podium this season after finishing second in 2021 and third in 2010.

Tokyo 2020 silver medallist Kye Whyte won't feature in Türkiye but could be one of the contenders for the overall title.

BMX Racing World Cup 2023 format

There are four categories in the World Cup: men's elite, women's elite, men's under-23, and women's under-23. Riders can only score points for the category they are participating in, meaning that an under-23 athlete does not score points for the elite category unless he or she competes as an elite athlete.

At each moto (heat), starting with round one, the top four riders advance to the next round of the event until the eight-rider final is reached. Riders, who are not in the top four in round one, get a second chance in the “last chance round”, where the top two riders also advance to the next round. The competition format is repeated on every competition day.

After each final, the winning rider is awarded 150 points for the World Cup general classification. Second to eighth place will get 130, 115, 100, 90, 80, 75 and 70 points. The riders that get eliminated before the finals then receive points corresponding to the round they were eliminated in and their position in those races.

When all eight rounds are over, the rider with the most points is crowned the World Cup champion.

Schedule 2023 UCI BMX Racing World Cup

Once again, this year’s UCI BMX Racing World Cup consists of ten rounds.

The season has been divided into two parts. Türkiye and the Netherlands are hosting the first four rounds in June. After a three-month break, the season will continue in France with the fifth and sixth round before leaving the European continent.

Santiago del Estero in Argentina will host the final four rounds in October, taking place over two weekends.

  • 3 June: Round 1 in Sakarya (TUR)
  • 4 June: Round 2 in Sakarya (TUR)
  • 24 June: Round 3 in Papendal (NED)
  • 25 June: Round 4 in Papendal (NED)
  • 23 September: Round 5 in Sarrians (FRA)
  • 24 September: Round 6 in Sarrians (FRA)
  • 7 October: Round 7 in Santiago del Estero (ARG)
  • 8 October: Round 8 in Santiago del Estero (ARG)
  • 13 October: Round 9 in Santiago del Estero (ARG)
  • 14 October: Round 10 in Santiago del Estero (ARG)

The UCI BMX Racing World Championships this year will be hosted by Glasgow in Scotland, where 13 individual UCI World Championships will take place between 3 and 13 August.

The European Continental Championships and Asian Continental Championships will take place in July. The Pan American Games will happen in October, followed by the African Continental Championship in November and the South American Championships in December.

BMX World Cup event coming to Tulsa

Ron

  • May 9, 2023 May 8, 2023

The UCI has announced that the 2024 BMX World Cup is headed to Tulsa in April 2024. The highly anticipated announcement comes after the UCI met in Italy last week to approve the World Cup dates and locations.

The prestigious BMX racing event is comprised of eight rounds held at various spots around the world. Rounds 1 and 2 will be held in New Zealand in February 2024, followed by Rounds 3 and 4 in Australia later that month. From there, the tour resumes in Tulsa for rounds 5 and 6 in April, followed by the final two rounds that will be held in the Netherlands in June 2024.

It is the first time a UCI World Cup event has been held in Tulsa, which will also be the final qualifier for the 2024 Olympics in Paris. It will be held at the 25,000-square-foot Hardesty National BMX Stadium located within the national headquarters for USA BMX at 490 N. Lansing Ave. in East Tulsa.

“We are incredibly proud and honored to be selected to host the only 2024 BMX Racing World Cup stop in the United States,” said BA Anderson, CEO of USA BMX. “All eyes will be on our world-class stadium right here in Tulsa which opened just one year ago. This effort was a labor of love in collaboration with the City of Tulsa and the Tulsa Sports Commission, and we are thrilled to bring it to the international stage in such a big way.”

Hardesty National BMX Stadium—spanning two football fields long with seating for 2,000 spectators—is the focal point of the expansive BMX Headquarters complex that relocated to Tulsa in February 2022 and also includes the BMX Hall of Fame and USA BMX Foundation. The outdoor free-span arena hosts weekly racing events, coaching clinics, Stacyc World Finals, elite training camps as well as World Cup events. It is the only Olympic-caliber covered training facility in the United States, boasting an Olympic-sized start ramp with a professional-grade track.

“We are thrilled to partner with USA BMX to bring this international event to their headquarters in downtown Tulsa,” added Joel Koester, director of sales for the Tulsa Sports Commission. “Not only will this bring around 230 athletes from 30 different countries here to experience our city, but as the event will be broadcast globally, it will shine a significant spotlight on Tulsa and the incredible biking scene we have here.”

The BMX Racing World Cup is one of several UCI World Championships that celebrate achievements in indoor and outdoor cycling.

It is an immense pleasure to bring our 2024 UCI BMX Racing World Cup to Tulsa,” concluded UCI President David Lappartient. “This new stopover promises to be particularly intense as it represents the last two UCI World Cup rounds where qualification points for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games can be earned. The Hardesty National BMX Stadium, headquarters of USA BMX, will provide a fitting stage for this very important weekend of racing. I thank our new hosts for their commitment to our sport and its athletes.”

On Friday, the racers will have one last opportunity to gain a score or improve their scores before competing in the championship event on Saturday.

At each event, riders earn points toward the final year-end rankings. Riders must have at least two National scores to obtain a year-end ranking and plate, calculated using a rider’s best two series finishes plus their finish at the world championship race. Riders will compete in the respective age category based on the day of the race. To see the complete rules and entry information, visit stacycworlds.com.

Roberts beat out what felt like the entire Chinese bicycling federation, who finished in the five spots behind Roberts. Sibei Sun finished second with a high score of 89.10 and Huimin Zhou rounded out the podium, scoring 87.90 in her second run.

“I mean, Team China, they’re coming on strong. They have some of the best riders in the world and they’re so motivated to keep it going,” Roberts said after her victory. “They placed second through sixth and that’s incredible for an entire team. So going into the event, I knew there was some big stuff I wanted to pull for the first run. I did what I could.”

Freestyle BMX gives riders a pair of 60-second runs across a park full of various quarter pipes, kickers, ramps, and pyramids, from which their highest score is counted.

Roberts began racing BMX at age nine before transitioning into the freestyle discipline in 2012.

She won her first World Championship in her UCI World Championship debut in 2017. The following year, Roberts finished third at Worlds. She’s won every World Championship since (2020’s Worlds, which were slated to be held in Houston, were canceled due to the Covid-19 pandemic).

For Hannah Roberts, there’s only one box left unchecked on her international palmarès (do freestyle BMXers call it their “palmarès?”): to win an Olympic gold medal.

cycling bmx freestyle park wc women final podium

In the 2020 Tokyo Olympics—where BMX Freestyle made its Olympic debut—Roberts took home the silver after a poor landing on her second run forced her to stop the run and accept her first-round score.

Roberts was the first overall seed and a heavy favorite going into the event.

However, Great Britain’s Charlotte Worthington took gold, scoring a 97.50 on her second run, which topped Roberts’ 96.10 first run. The pair were head and shoulders above the competition, as third-place finisher Nikita Ducarroz of Switzerland notched an 89.20.

Worthington finished Monday’s World Championships in seventh place with a high score of 76.70. But it was Worthington who was amongst the first to congratulate Roberts when it was realized the young American had won.

“I’m super grateful,” Roberts said after her win. “I’m still emotional.”

Roberts—who also won freestyle gold at the 2019 Pan American Games—will have another shot to stand atop the Olympic podium next summer in Paris.

GT Bicycles (1972–2024)

Gt bicycles a true innovator in the sport..

In 1972, Gary Turner, one of the pioneers of BMX Bicycle production got his son Craig Turner involved in BMX racing at five years old. Light weight BMX bikes were rare in those days. Gary being a machinist & welder decided to build a light weight race bike for his younger brother Glenn Turner & his son Craig Turner. He hand belt every frame & fork in his garage in Santa Ana, California. He was constantly changing & improving his craft. Craig & Glenn started ripping it up at the local BMX tracks, naturally everybody wanted one of his BMX frames & forks. After building one of the best brands of BMX bicycles with his late partner Richard Long, he retired from the corporate bicycle world in 1998.

Recently, Gary Turner himself started producing a few frames. We are putting those in a separate category:
