Exploring Boston

When you’re not watching the Celtics beat the buzzer, there’s plenty to do in Boston, or “Beantown” as the locals call it. Take a trip to Boston harbor and visit the New England Aquarium, which features The Giant Ocean Tank, a 200,000-US-gallon (760,000 L) cylindrical exhibit made of concrete and glass that houses its marine life. There’s also the famous Fenway Park, where the Red Sox made baseball history time and time again. For fans that want to do some shopping, Faneuil Hall Marketplace , located on Boston’s historic Freedom Trail, is just a stone’s throw away.

NBATrips likes to spoil our tour guests, which is why we take care of everything so you can relax and enjoy your time seeing the sights, sounds, and the scorching center-court action. That’s what makes it such a memorable experience!

“For the games we upgraded the tickets and sat on the courtside, we went up to the floor to throw a free throw which was the most fun experience for me…and met NBA players there and took pictures with them. I recommend everyone to join all this fun. It was an unbelievable and unforgettable bar mitzvah trip!”

TD Garden, also referred to as “The Garden,” is located in Boston, Massachusetts, and home to the NBA’s Boston Celtics and the NHL’s Boston Bruins. It is named after its sponsor, TD Bank, a subgroup of Canada’s Toronto-Dominion Bank.

Arena Guide by Basketball Tripper

The TD Garden was built as a replacement facility to the original Boston Garden; the arena officially broke ground on April of 1993 and wasn’t finished until September of 1995. The facility is fixed directly above MBTA’s North Station. It is the largest sports and entertainment arena in the New England are with an estimated three to four million visitors each year. The arena is owned by foodservice and hospitality company Delaware North, whose CEO, Jeremy Jacobs, also owns the Bruins.

On May 8, 1992, Delaware North announced that it had locked in its funding for a new arena with upwards of $120 million worth of loans evenly split between Fleet Bank of Massachusetts, Bank of Boston, and Shawmut National Corporation. Construction officially on April 29, 1993, was completed 27 months after seven weeks of delays due to heavy snowfall.

Before the 2006–2007 season, the arena underwent a major renovation that resulted in a new entertainment board and video advertising panels. They also added a see-through shot clock. Later, in 2009, a new energy-efficient lighting system was added to the outside of the arena. They also announced $70 million in a project upgrade to the concourses and Legends Club restaurant and the relocation of the merchandise shot and technological advancements. Finally, in the 2018-2019 season, a significant upgrade to the playing surface’s overhead lighting had just been finished.

Best bars near ground.

Several popular bars are located within walking distance to the arena, with a few of the favorites being Boston Beer Works located across the street from Fenway Park, Sports Grille Boston, and The Fours. The Fours was Sports Illustrated’s’ “Best Sports Bar in America” with memorabilia covering the walls. The Fours is almost like a Boston sports history museum. No matter what bar you find yourself at, Boston is a fantastic sports city passionate about the Celtics and always has a great atmosphere on game days.

Food - Places to Eat

While several of the bars and pubs in the area offer several food options, a few other food options are a favorite of the locals and are right around the arena that you can stop at before tip-off. While TD Garden has a variety of restaurants such as Frito Lay Test Kitchen, North End Butcher, Sal’s Pizza, and many others; some of the most popular in the area are Alcove, A&B Burgers, Tasty Burgers as well as West End Johnnie’s

The TD Garden offers daily tours for The Sports Museum that leave on the hour every hour (Monday-Saturday,) and begin at 10:00 am, and the last tour leaves at 3:00 pm. The tours start on the first level of the arena at the pro shop. The museum exhibits celebrate the history of Boston sports, including all the teams that play and have played at the TD Garden. There is a maximum of 18 participants, so it is advised that you check in 15-30 minutes before the start of the tour.

Boston Celtics Tickets

Typically, Celtics tickets vary on who they are playing on the given night, but tickets can be found for as low as $25.00, with an average price of $109.00.

One of the best seating options for a Celtics game is the Club seating in sections 107-115 and 137-145. One of the more popular is in the SportsDeck, and this is a more casual location with great amenities such as all-you-can-eat appetizers and early access to the stadium on game day. Finally, you have VIP seating, a premium option that includes seats in the first five rows.

Visiting the Arena - Travel

Stadium map.

Since the TD Garden is located near the heart of Boston, there are several travel options you can choose from. The most popular transportation methods would include busses, rental bikes/scooters, MBTA trains that have a stop just under the arena, various forms of car services, and thousands of parking spots if you chose to bring your vehicle.

The address for TD Garden is as follows: • 100 Legends Way, Boston, MA 02114

While traffic during game nights will drive larger crowds than usual down to Boston, you should be in the clear of heavy traffic if you leave a few hours before tip-off. If you are coming from surrounding suburbs, you will most likely be coming into the city on one of the three major highways ( I-95, I-495, and I-93).

While there are public/paid parking options on any given game night, the lot that the TD Garden sponsors is the North Station Garage. This garage offers an event rate of $54 if you enter the garage three hours before the tipoff. There are elevators located in the garage that will bring you directly to the main concourse and you can scan your tickets from there.

For public transportation, you are most likely looking to be on MBTA, a network of computer rails that run the metro area of Boston. You can take a series of connections that you can ultimately take to North Station, just under the arena. This train network can take you nearly anywhere in the metro area of Boston.

If you are coming from out of state and flying, you will most likely fly into Boston Logan International Airport. The drive from the airport to the arena is 3.5 miles and will roughly take 25-40 minutes to reach the arena. The most popular transportation methods to the TD Garden are by subway ($3), bus ($3-$13), taxi ($15-$20), or car.

TD Garden: Travel Guide for a Celtics Game in Boston

Things to Know When Going to a Celtics Game at TD Garden

boston celtics tours

Boston is a great sports town and no team has won more championships locally than the Boston Celtics. The Celtics have a great history of success with championships in the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, and 00s, and as recently as 2010. The recent hire of coach Brad Stevens has brought attention back to the team once again because he gets his teams to play hard. The basketball fans in Boston are incredibly knowledgeable, so the home crowd atmosphere for Celtics’ games at TD Garden is always at high level. Here’s what you need to know when you’re heading downtown to cheer along with them in the arena.

Tickets & Seating Areas

The Celtics have been successful over the years, but they don’t have the same run of sold-out ticket sales as say the Knicks or the Lakers. Tickets are available through the primary market on the Ticketmaster website, via the phone, or at the TD Garden box office. Sometimes you’ll have to hit the secondary market to get what you need. Obviously, you also have the well-known options like Stubhub and TicketsNow , Ticketmaster’s secondary ticket platform that season ticket holders are encouraged to sell through, or a ticket aggregator (think Kayak for sports tickets) like SeatGeek and ‎TiqIQ , which both have a decent amount of inventory from broker season tickets.

As for where to sit when you go, basketball is a sport best seen in the lower level. Tickets in the first three rows come with access to the Sun Life Courtside Club, which includes a cool 55-foot media wall displaying games and scores from around the league. If you can get a hold of someone’s season tickets that include Legends Club access, you’ll enjoy the availability of brick oven pizza, charcuterie, and a raw bar. The SportsDeck , located in between the lower and upper bowls on one baseline of the arena, provides another Club atmosphere with some people choosing to stand while they enjoy complimentary appetizers during the game.

Getting There

It’s very easy to get to TD Garden since it’s built on top of North Station, a transportation hub. All the Green Line routes of the T, Boston’s subway system, stop at North Station and are the easiest way to get to TD Garden. Just be prepared for the possibility of busy trains and long lines leaving the game since it’s the only line that stops at North Station. You can also take the Orange Line to Haymarket, the Blue Line to Bowdoin or the Red Line to Charles / MGH and walk to TD Garden in under ten minutes. Those coming in from the suburbs have the ability to take the commuter rail in from north of Boston to North Station. Those coming from the south and west of Boston can take the commuter rail to South Station and then take the T or a taxi from there.

There are also various bus routes that end around TD Garden. A full list can be found on the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority website . Of course there’s always a taxi or Uber if you’re running late. Maybe you’ll even walk if it’s a nice day outside. You can also drive to the game and park either at the North Station Garage or one of the other parking lots in the area. The North Station Garage costs $42 for event nights, so park elsewhere if that’s too much for you.

Pregame & Postgame Fun

There are many great bars and restaurant to keep you entertained during your time in Boston. In terms of food close to TD Garden, there are plenty of options. You can grab really good fast food Mexican at Anna’s Taqueria . Their burritos are the best in town. Those in need of Boston’s well-known seafood can wander to Neptune Oyster or Union Oyster House if they don’t mind battling the lines. The North End, Boston’s Italian neighborhood, isn’t too far away either. Regina’s Pizzeria is a Boston staple for piping hot pies although the lines can go down the street during busy times. Dolce Vita , Giacomo’s, Lucca , and Mamma Maria are all really good options for a standard Italian dinner. Save some room for dessert so you can enjoy the cannolis at Mike’s Pasty or Modern Pastry . I prefer Mike’s, but the locals are split between which they like more.

If it’s bars you crave then the area near TD Garden has plenty. The Harp is the classic spot and always has a good crowd before a big game across the street at TD Garden. West End Johnnie’s and the Grand Canal are two of the better options a few steps further away although Johnnie’s gets intense after games on a weekend night. Tavern in the Square is a newer chain that’s been opening around town in the last ten years and their recent addition in the area has about 40 beers on tap to enjoy. If beer is your thing, you might enjoy Boston Beer Works , which offers a variety of micro-brews.

 At the Game

TD Garden recently underwent a massive renovation of their concourse area. The first stage of the renovation covered the concourse area behind the lower level of seats with the second stage for the upper-level concourse taking place this upcoming summer. The new food offerings include burgers drizzled with “Gooey Sauce” at Big Bad Burger, huge slices and arancini from Sal’s Pizza, shaved steak sandwiches at Garden Grill, and an array of tacos at Taqueria. The fan-favorite chicken fingers, however, haven’t gone anywhere, although they’re sold under the new name of Lucky’s Chicken. Unfortunately, the upgrade is concession stands isn’t as good as some of the other concessions stands at other NBA arenas. Finally, TD Garden also upgraded its Wi-Fi so fans can readily upload to social media, but the speed bogs down when the house is packed.

Where to Stay

If you make it in from out of town for the game, there are plenty of hotels downtown for you to enjoy. You’ll likely want to stay near Boston Common or Boylston Street so you can enjoy the most of the city. Every brand name you can think of exists like Four Seasons, Hyatt Regency, Marriott, Ritz Carlton, and Westin. If you want to stay within walking distance to TD Garden there’s the Holiday Inn Express, the Wyndham, and the Liberty Hotel, an upscale Luxury Collection property that was formerly a prison. The area down by the Seaport has really exploded in recent years and there are a few brand name hotel options there as well. Hipmunk can help you find the best hotel for your needs. Alternatively, you can look into renting an apartment via AirBNB , HomeAway , or VRBO .

The Sports Museum

The Sports Museum is a 501(c)(3) non-profit educational institution housed in the TD Garden that has served Boston and New England for more than 40 years.

At The Sports Museum, we celebrate the character of Boston sports -- the unique brand of teamwork, determination, responsibility, courage, fairness, and other qualities of character possessed by our teams and athletes that make Boston "The Greatest Sports City in America." Equally important, we use this distinctly rich heritage to help build character in kids so that they can stand strong in the face of drugs, violence, and other dangers.

Boston Celtics Agree to Massive Extension With All-Star Guard

T he 62-17 Boston Celtics, who own the best record in the Eastern Conference by a significant margin, look to be keeping their starting five together for a good long while.

Combo guard Jrue Holiday's agent, Jason Glushon of Glushon Sports Management, has informed ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski that the two-time All-Star, one-time NBA champion and five-time All-Defensive teamer has declined his $37.3 million player option for 2024-25 and agreed to a massive new four-year, $135 million contract extension to stick around with the Celtics through the 2027-28 season.

The 15-year pro is averaging 12.5 points on a hyper-efficient slash line of .481/.431/.833 (he's evolved into a lethal corner three point shooter late into his career), 5.4 rebounds, 4.9 assists, 0.9 steals and 0.8 steals a night, across the 68 healthy games he's played thus far. His scoring and passing are considerably down from his 2022-23 numbers while with the Milwaukee Bucks (19.3 points on .479/.384/.859 shooting splits, plus 7.4 assists), but that's due in part to the fact that he's playing on a much deeper team, with more talented passers, playmakers and scorers alongside him than he had on a thinner Milwaukee club that fell in the first round of last season's playoffs.

Holiday, 33, is just the fifth option on offense for the Celtics. All-Stars Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown lead the way with averages of 27 and 23.1 points a game, respectively. Another newly-obtained trade addition, injury-prone center Kristaps Porzingis, is averaging 20.2 points himself. Holiday's backcourt mate Derrick White, another defense-first guard, is also essentially the team's point man, averaging more points (15.3 on .463/.398/.901 shooting splits) and assists (5.2) than the newly-extended vet.

Wojnarowski notes that Holiday's hefty new contract will put Boston far above the league's anticipated salary cap in 2024-25 (barring trades), which will significantly impede the kinds of pieces that team president Brad Stevens can add to his team's roster next year. That said, Wojnarowski adds that the new deal will actually help Boston save money on its overall cap next year, given that it pays him a bit less annually ($33.5 million) than his prior, now-declined player option.

Signing the 6-foot-4 UCLA product through his age-37 season is a risky proposition, especially for a guard whose play is predicated on defense. Yes, Holiday doesn't seem to have exhibited many signs of age-related decline at this stage, but how will he look in two years? Three?

The Celtics no doubt are hopeful that the team isn't just paying for past experience, but future production, too. Short-term, the deal makes plenty of sense, as it keeps a core five together that has helped lead the team to the top overall record in the NBA, the league's best offensive rating (124.7) and its third-best defensive rating (113).

Holiday arrived in Boston as the centerpiece of a trade with the Portland Trail Blazers, who acquired him in their deal with the Bucks to land All-Star point guard Damian Lillard late in the 2023 offseason.

Trail Blazers at Celtics: Jayson Tatum will sit, but Jaylen Brown will play as Celtics host lowly Portland

Jaylen Brown (hand) will play against the Trail Blazers on Sunday after sitting out Friday's win.

As the Celtics navigate the home stretch of the regular season with the No. 1 seed locked up and little to play for, Jayson Tatum (right knee) will get a day off Sunday, but Jaylen Brown, who sat out Friday’s 101-100 win over the Kings with a hand injury, will play.

Derrick White and Jayden Springer, both of whom sat out Friday, are available.

All eyes will be on how coach Joe Mazzulla manages minutes and rotations .

Entering the fourth quarter with a 12-point cushion against the Kings, Mazzulla rested his starters and let the reserves play the remainder of the game.

While Boston won the game, it got tight as the final buzzer neared, but Mazzulla never wavered.

“You have to be able to win games with different guys. I felt like it was important in that particular moment that they earned the right to do whatever it took to win the game,” he said.

With the 21-56 Trail Blazers next on the docket, expect the Celtics bench to get more run.
