Meet Your Guide in Piazza del Duomo

The adventure begins in Piazza del Duomo. Home to the Duomo of Florence, Baptistery of Saint John, and Giotto's Bell Tower, the square is the heart of Florentine history. Your guide will describe the importance of the complex as you head towards the cathedral entrance, where your skip-the-line tickets will allow you to start exploring without the usual long wait.

The Duomo di Firenze, Florence Cathedral

Completed in 1436, the great Gothic Cathedral is one of the world's most unique and impressive churches. Originally clad in the medieval wooden style, the church's façade was deemed obsolete within decades of its opening. Your guide will tell fascinating stories about the immense scandal involving the Medici family, Popes, and famous architects that led to an incomplete façade for centuries. Listen to the saga and appreciate the modern façade of white, green, and red marble that adorns the dome today.

Within the vast interior of the church, you'll first be struck by the huge frescoes of the Last Judgement that cover the cupola's ceiling. You'll see these impressive paintings up close when you have ascended to the top of the dome. Other parts of the cathedral are more simple such as the white colors of the nave symbolizing piety and religious devotion.

Exclusive Areas

After you've discovered the main part of the Duomo, it's time to visit the places the general public don't get to see. First, you'll enter the exclusive Circular Room, where the 16th-century statues that used to be part of the cathedral's façade are stored. Next you'll visit the secret terraces that were closed off to the public for hundreds of years, and many Florentines never even knew they existed! From here, you'll get a close-up view of the details that make the Duomo such an impressive piece of architecture. And of course, you'll also get a tremendous view of the city below.

Brunelleschi's Dome

During the 14th and 15th centuries, Florentine architects had a major issue to solve. They had to enclose the top of their cathedral without the use of the flying buttresses that had become commonplace in European construction. In Florence, the buttresses were seen as horribly ugly and therefore banned from being used in the city.

With this handicap and the lack of modern engineering tools, Filippo Brunelleschi's dome becomes even more impressive. Standing nearly 500 feet in the air, and constructed of layers of dome structures, you'll learn the story how the dome came to be.

Finally, you'll climb to the top of the dome with your expert guide. As you near the top of the cupola, admire the frescoes across the dome ceiling. Painted by Giorgio Vasari beginning in 1568 and completed by Federico Zuccari a decade later, it's natural to compare these frescoes to Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel.

Accessed via the exclusive Circular Room and secret terraces—which are only available as part of this tour—the dome climb is a truly unforgettable experience. As you reach the summit, take in the incredible panorama of Florence surrounding. With a 360-degree view, you'll see the epic beauty of the Renaissance capital in all its glory.

Lots of steps

Anna our tour guide was really good. Unfortunately our tour was changed and we only got the tour with the guide of the Duomo climb. Once we entered the stairs of the dome we no longer could hear Anna's comments. The view was spectacular!!!!!! We did make use of the museum, baptistry and underground passes that came with the ticket on later days, since most of our tour was cancelled on our chosen day. Highly recommend if you're willing to climb up a lot of stairs.

Some water and comfortable shoes! Since this is a religious site, you'll also need clothing that covers your shoulders and knees.

Is there a dress code to enter the religious sites on this tour?

We ask both men and women to cover their knees and shoulders, otherwise, the Duomo might refuse entry. We understand the summers in Florence can be hot, so a great alternative is to bring a shawl/scarf/sweater with you. That way you can cover your knees and shoulders when necessary.

What if I have concerns about my mobility?

This is a walking tour, and the steps to reach the top of the dome are very steep. We wouldn't recommend this tour for people with mobility issues or severe vertigo. If you have concerns about your mobility, consider a Private Florence Tour as this can be more easily tailored to your needs.

Is this tour run by The Tour Guy?

This tour is run by one of our trusted and vetted partners in Florence.

6 BEST Duomo Tours in Florence (by a Local)

By: Author Stefania Guglielmi

Posted on Last updated: April 15, 2024

Categories Europe , Italy

Heading to Florence soon? You can’t miss the Duomo, possibly the city’s most important landmark! I’ve compiled a list of the best Florence Duomo Tours to help you plan the perfect visit. Check it out!

If you’re planning a trip to Florence, visiting the iconic Duomo should be at the top of your list . No matter if you’re spending a week, one day , or two days in Florence , its main cathedral is a MUST!

The stunning building, with its marble facade and towering dome, is a masterpiece of architecture and engineering .

The Duomo was designed by Filippo Brunelleschi, a pioneering architect whose work still astonishes experts of our day. Its official name is Santa Maria del Fiore Cathedral, and it’s used interchangeably with the term Duomo.

Image of Brunelleschi's Dome and the terracotta roofs of Florence

But is the Duomo simply a cathedral? Not quite. The Duomo is a complex that comprises six different sites, one of which is the beautiful church, and another one being Brunelleschi’s Dome. The other attractions include the Baptistry, the Bell Tower, the Crypt, and the Museum. It can take a lot of time to visit them all, so when buying tickets for the Duomo you can choose which sections you want to access.  Each one has its own unique history and significance, starting with the Cathedral. The imposing structure boasts a grand nave, stunning stained-glass windows, and beautiful frescoes. The Dome is its crown jewel , dominating Florence’s skyline. Then there’s the Baptistery , an octagonal building famous for its ornate bronze doors and beautiful mosaics. Giotto’s Bell Tower , home to 12 bells, offers panoramic views of Florence, and the Crypt is an underground space beneath the main church. Finally, the Duomo Museum has a collection of art and artifacts from its long history, including sculptures, and paintings.

Whether you’re interested in architecture, art, or history, you just can’t miss visiting this symbol of Florence.

That’s why I’ve put together a list of the best tours to help you choose the perfect visit for you . Without further ado, let’s explore the ultimate Florence Duomo tours!

Why rely on me for Florence Duomo tours? My roots are in Bologna, Italy, just a stone’s throw from Florence. I’ve wandered Florence’s streets and marveled at the Duomo on countless visits.

With 10 years of experience in writing about Italy and helping people plan their trips, I know what makes a tour exceptional. And I ensure you get only the very best.

I generally use Viator , Get Your Guide , and Walks to book tours around the world. I especially recommend them for their great cancellation policy. If your plans change, you can cancel most activities up to 24 hours in advance and get a full refund.

In a rush? These are the top tours

OUR PICK: The BEST Florence Duomo Tour

Our top pick is this Florence: Dome Climb, Museum and Baptistry Small-Group Tour . It is by far the most comprehensive visit to the complex.

You’ll get tickets for all six areas of the Duomo, and enjoy a very informative guided tour of Santa Maria del Fiore Cathedral. Learn about the building’s history, and all the legends that surround it from your savvy guide.

You’ll also get to admire the magnificent frescoes inside the cathedral and climb to the dome, from where the views are unparalleled.

Visit the museum and the baptistry as well, and receive a 72-hour valid pass to access the bell tower and the Cathedral crypt on your own. The tour caters to 12 people at a time, ensuring an intimate experience.

Why is this tour the best one in our opinion? Most tours only visit a part of the Duomo – either the cathedral or the dome. This small-group tour covers it all.

The tour is only guided through the first part, meaning you get to climb the dome at your own pace. After the tour, you have a ticket valid for 72 hours to complete your visit to the remaining parts of the complex.

are Florence Duomo tours worth it

Florence is filled with endless beauty and charm, and sometimes, it can be easy to look past a special building, or in this case, the Florence Duomo, and not truly appreciate it the way it deserves simply because you may lack some knowledge of its history.

Though it happens to everyone at one point, it doesn’t have to happen to you. You can learn so much more, and appreciate beyond the average traveler if you take a tour of the Florence Duomo.

A local guide will offer everything from insight into its exterior Renaissance architecture to the crypts that are hidden from typical self-guided visits.

Aside from learning about the impressive mosaics in its interior, the thousand years old clock inside, and stunning frescoes and their meanings, you’ll be able to ask all the questions you have.

best Florence Duomo guided tours

The best Florence Duomo guided tours are going to be the ones that best cater to what you want to get out of touring the Florence Duomo.

Though each tour will offer a great explanation of the vast history and fascinating stories and legends that surround this monumental Florence cathedral, with a professional guide, the best Florence Duomo tours will depend on what you’d like to get out of it, and what piques your interest the most.

Let’s explore a few options that can help start to inspire you to get clear on how you want to experience the grand Florence Duomo.

1 – Early Access Duomo tours

Early access Duomo tours are incredible opportunities for those travelers who want to not only get the tour experience with a guide but those who want to experience what it would be like to “open up” the church along with the key-bearer of the Duomo.

Requiring a bit of an early wake-up call, an early-access Duomo tour will reward you with something that few get to see, like being inside the cathedral when the Duomo light up inside and climbing up to the Cupola del Brunelleschi to see the morning light start to wake up the city, before the crowds of people flood the iconic square.

Part of the experience includes enjoying a local breakfast, further enriching the experience uniquely.

  • Early Access Duomo tours

2 – Duomo Complex tours

Exploring the Duomo Complex on a tour simply means that as part of the tour, you would experience visiting the cathedral, dome, and other attractions within the Duomo Complex.

Tour times can vary from 1.5 hours in duration to up to 3 hours, and the difference lies in the few extra places that are included in the tours.

For instance, the 3-hour long tour may include a stop inside the Museum of the Opera del Duomo, brimming with famous pieces of artwork, and the Baptistery.

Not to mention, the depth at which the local historians share is worth the time and cost of the tours. The longer the tour, the more the guides are able to share and answer more questions.

  • Duomo Complex tours

3 – Cathedral tours

If you’re just looking to explore the Cathedral itself, a Cathedral tour is just what you may want to consider, as it is a tour that usually lasts up to 1 hour, and offers a local historian sharing eye-opening stories, historical facts about the construction of the cathedral, and the magnificent frescoes inside.

There are options that include skip-the-line, which is a great thing to consider especially when visiting the cathedral, as it’s usually the number 1 attraction to have the longest line in Florence.

Something to keep in mind is that the cathedral tours only include a tour and entry into the cathedral, and not into any other parts of the complex, including the tower and dome.

  • Cathedral tours

4 – Duomo’s Dome tours

Want to explore only the cathedral’s dome?

Climb up the 463 steps, until reaching the top of the dome, taking in the spectacular views of the city, as well as the detailed Renaissance etchings and engravings on the famed cathedral, up close while you’re up there.

From there, you’ll also be able to see wide enough into the famous Tuscan countryside and learn about the inspiration from the same sights you’re viewing for many of Florence’s painters throughout time.

It wholly depends on your travel style, availability, budget, and season in which you travel which could influence which Florence Duomo tour you decide to select for your trip.

Many tours offer the same basic essentials like a professional tour guide, and entrance into the cathedral, while other more inclusive tours may offer skip-the-line options, and entrance into special parts of the cathedral-like the Baptistery, the Giotto Belltower, and the Opera del Duomo Museum.

If you’re traveling solo, you may want to go all out and selfishly spend as much time as you can exploring and learning the true meaning and hidden mysteries of the Duomo on a small group tour or a skip-the-line Duomo climb.

If you’re traveling with your family, a skip-the-line guided express access to the Duomo may be your choice, if you’re looking to get close to the historical emblem of Florence, without boring your kids too much.

Those who are traveling on a budget may want to consider a simple yet concise 1-hour guided tour to get the basics, plus more and the opportunity to ask any and all questions that pop up throughout the tour.

what to see on a Florence Duomo tour

When you book a Florence Duomo tour, you are unlocking thousands of years’ worth of Florentine history, which will come across as more interesting and will come alive to you as you take a tour versus learning about it anywhere else.

See with your eyes the sights inside, and learn straight from professional art historians, and guides as you experience with your own senses the 3rd largest cathedral in the world.

Let’s break down some of the highlights awaiting you at the Duomo Complex.

Cathedral of Florence

Discover the Florence Cathedral, also known as the Duomo, a church that dates back to 1296 and was built to honor, Santa Maria del Fiore (Saint Mary of the Flower), paying homage to the flower of Florence, a lily.

Walk inside its 2 doors to discover the gray-blue marble coating the interiors of the holy space, as your eyes scan the art inside from the Ascension of the Virgin, to the relief work on the doors, the religious sculptures towering columns, and more.

A tour guide will share interesting facts from the architects who built the cathedral, the struggles that went into the creation of the cathedral, and the role of the cathedral today.

Brunelleschi’s Dome

Brunelleschi’s Dome, Florence

Adorning the Florentine cityscape is the undeniable Brunelleschi’s Dome, built between 1420 and 1436 by the architect, Filippo Brunelleschi, hence the name of the Dome.

Look up the magnificent frescoes painted on the inside of the dome featuring imagery of the Last Judgment, as you notice the oculus situated in the middle of the dome.

Step up an estimated 463 steps to reach the opulent views, feeling like an old-world King or Queen, taking impressive sights of the city, usually taking around 30 minutes- 1 hour to reach the privileged views.

Listen as the guide shares important facts about the construction of the dome, known as the largest masonry vault in the world, as well as learn about the recent renovations done to maintain the grandeur of the dome.

Duomo Terraces

Duomo Terraces, Florence

Don’t just reach the dome, but also walk the Duomo Terraces, taking you up 32 meters high, and walking a path of 70 feet on either the north or south side of the cathedral.

The Duomo Terraces offer not only stunning sights of the city and countryside, but also an up-close look at the construction of the cathedral, the marble coating, and the rose window- the main window sitting above the entrance of the cathedral.

Walk with a tour guide to share with you the history and alternative uses of the terrace when it comes to rain, as well as safety precautions when walking through yourself.

Giotto’s Bell Tower

Giotto’s Bell Tower, Florence

Built in 1334 by sculptor and architect Giotto, Giotto’s Bell Tower is said to be possibly the most beautiful bell tower in Italy.

Decorated with colors of white, green, and red, the square and rectangular shapes that embellish the bell tower tell a story of humanity, the universe, and religion, worth a moment of contemplation.

Take the advice and insight from the guides, offering a deeper appreciation for Giotto and other artists’ input, and work on the beautiful bell tower, which is detailed with intentional pieces and design.

Climb up the 398 steps bell tower to get astonishing views of the city from above.

Baptistery of San Giovanni

Baptistery of San Giovanni, Florence

Appearing in a form of a hexagon is the Baptistry of San Giovanni, which dates back to the 4th or 5th century.

Historically, there were many believed uses of the Baptistery, many of which you will learn on a guided tour, but one of those uses was to store art sculptures and paintings.

Inside, marvel at the intricate details of the mosaic imagery, featuring scenes of the Last Judgment and St. John, the patron saint of Florence.

Take a look at the north and south doors inside, engraved with other religious carvings, and Renaissance Gates of Paradise.

Ancient Basilica of Santa Reparata

Ancient Basilica of Santa Reparata, Florence

Step inside to view the remnants of early Christianity in Florence at the Ancient Basilica of Santa Reparata, which was excavated between 1965 to 1973, and sits across from the Baptistery.

Scan the floor of the Santa Reparata, donning a magnificent mosaic of various geometric shapes, with imagery of a peacock, said to be a symbol in Christianity of immortality.

Be guided by an art historian, as they share more details and insight into the interior’s decoration, colors, and engravings, all symbolic of the early foundations of Florence.

Also learn about the souls that rest within the Santa Reparata, and why it is so important to Florentines.

Opera del Duomo Museum

Opera del Duomo Museum, Florence

Walk into one of the most important museums in Florence and in the whole world, housing masterpieces dating back to the Renaissance, that were part of some of Florence’s most important and historical points of interest.

Inside, you can expect to find masterpieces including David’s Michaelangelo, as well as other pieces created by the same architects and sculptors that designed the Duomo.

A guide will surely help you understand at a larger scale every piece inside the museum, to help you truly understand the grandeur of these pieces not only in Florence but the world.

What to know about florence from our local guides.

What are the best things to do in Florence?

Florence offers a multitude of iconic must-visit spots and hidden gems alike, guaranteeing that you’ll never be bored no matter how long you spend in this enchanting city. Here are a few of our guide team’s recommendations to get you started:

  • Check Florence’s top sights off your bucket list by visiting David and the Duomo —and, if you dare, take things one step further by climbing the dome
  • Delve into the countless artistic treasures housed within the Uffizi Gallery
  • Explore the sprawling Pitti Palace and bask in the tranquility of the Boboli gardens
  • Wander through the picturesque Oltrarno neighborhood and take part in the time-honored Italian aperitivo tradition at its lively bars
  • Immerse yourself in the vibrant atmosphere of the Sant’Ambrogio Market

What are some great day trips to take from Florence?

Florence is well-positioned within Tuscany to allow easy access to some of the most beautiful and historic corners of the region. Consider an excursion to Pisa to see the iconic Leaning Tower in person, an afternoon sipping wine in Chianti , or an all-encompassing Tuscany day trip covering some of the region's most picturesque towns.

Which typical foods should I try in Florence?

First things first: There’s no such thing as “Italian food”—not when each of Italy’s 20 regions has its own distinct culinary traditions! And Tuscany is no different. When visiting Florence, be sure to seek out the regional delicacies that are at their best on their home turf.

If you’re visiting Italy, you probably (understandably) plan on eating all the pasta you possibly can. Here in Florence, try the local wild boar ragu served with wide, flat noodles ( pappardelle al cinghiale ) or any type of pasta graced with Tuscany’s prized local truffles.

But pasta is far from the end-all-be-all of Florentine food. Traditionally, Tuscan cuisine was characterized as cucina povera , or “food of the poor,” and many dishes that are still enjoyed today have roots in this humble gastronomic tradition. Foods like ribollita , a hearty bread and kale soup, and the famous lampredotto (tripe) sandwich were born out of efforts to reduce waste and make the most of every scrap of meat and vegetables.

Last but not least, Florence’s most famous typical food is just about as far from cucina povera as it gets: the legendary bistecca alla fiorentina , or Florentine steak. If you’re looking to splurge on an unforgettable meal while in the Tuscan capital, don’t miss it!

If you want to eat the best Florentine food at the spots real locals love, join us on one of our Florence food tours. Our Tastes & Traditions of Florence Food Tour is a fantastic daytime option featuring a visit to the Sant'Ambrogio Market. In the evening, head across the river for aperitivo and dinner on our Oltrarno at Sunset Tour . Either way, you're guaranteed a fun, relaxing, and delicious few hours.

What are the best museums in Florence?

In addition to the Accademia Gallery, home to Michelangelo’s larger-than-life David statue, and the iconic Uffizi, here are a few more can’t-miss museums in Florence:

  • Palazzo Pitti, a former Medici palace-turned-cultural complex housing four museums
  • Museo Nazionale del Bargello, known for its collection of Renaissance sculptures by masters including Michelangelo, Bernini, and more
  • Palazzo Vecchio, the centerpiece of Piazza della Signoria, housing everything from ancient Roman ruins to Renaissance masterpieces
  • The Galileo Museum, home to an unrivaled collection of scientific equipment and an excellent option for families
  • Gucci Garden, a living tribute to the century-old luxury fashion house based in Florence

When is the best time to visit Florence?

Florence is sure to delight no matter when you decide to visit. Each season has its benefits, and it all comes down to the kind of experience you’re looking to have.

Many international visitors flock to Italy for summer vacation, making Florence a popular draw in the warmest months of the year. While this means the city can get quite crowded (and the temperatures are no joke), there’s nothing better than enjoying an al fresco meal on a gorgeous summer evening. (And, worst case scenario, the nearest beaches are just 90 minutes away.

Spring and fall boast the best temperatures all year: pleasantly warm, but not too hot, with refreshingly crisp evenings. Winter temperatures can be quite chilly (although snow is rare)—but if you’re looking for a more budget-friendly option with fewer crowds, it’s an excellent choice.

What are some fun things to do in Florence with kids?

Florence is an excellent city for families, with plenty of sights and activities that will keep even the littlest travelers entertained. A spin on the famous carousel in Piazza della Reppublica is a magical experience for all ages, and kids will love getting hands-on at the Leonardo da Vinci Interactive Museum. If you need a break from walking around (and the heat!), the Oblate Library (Biblioteca delle Oblate) offers a wonderful children’s section with kids’ books and even a small garden.

Another fantastic option for families is a kid-friendly food tour! Our Tastes & Traditions of Florence Tour is centered around the vibrant and colorful Sant’Ambrogio Market—a fun and exciting stop for little ones—and features plenty of kid-approved local tastes along the way.

History of the Duomo Florence

The Basilica Di Santa Maria Del Fiore more commonly known as the Duomo Cathedral of Florence was one of the most important architectural structures in 14th century Florence. It inspired and ushered in a whole new era of art and engineering.

With its spectacular Renaissance dome constructed by Filippo Brunelleschi and the baptistery directly across the street, Florence’s cathedral towers over the city. The huge Gothic cathedral dedicated to Santa Maria del Fiore was built on the foundations of the 7th-century church of Santa Reparata, the remnants of which may be seen in the crypt.

The Florence Duomo is located in Duomo Square. It was designed by Arnolfo di Cambio, a prominent architect, and sculptor who admired the Gothic style, and building began towards the end of the 13th century. Florentine artists abandoned the Gothic style in favor of the Roman style about the middle of the 14th century. The metalsmith Lorenzo Ghiberti and the artist Filippo Brunelleschi were given the honor of completing Florence Cathedral.

After the Cathedral’s facade was demolished towards the end of the sixteenth century, Emilio de Fabris reconstructed it, made minor changes, and used marble of various colors.

  • What to See
  • Climb the Duomo's Cupola

Climb the Duomo to see all of Florence

Afraid of heights or claustrophobic.

If you suffer from a fear of heights or dark, narrow spaces, then a climb up to the dome might not be for you.

It is less than a meter wide, there is plexiglas for protection and you can admire the immense size of the frescoes up close as well as LOOK DOWN about 40 meters into the central part of the cathedral . You are not exposed here and cannot fall -- but if you fear heights, this part might be hard to manage. The climb up the dome is within the space between the two domes so it is extremely narrow, and the steps are steep. People have different tolerances for heights so consider these points to decide whether to climb or not.

Reaching the Top of Florence

After seeing the Duomo from all sides and visiting the inside of the cathedral, all you need to do to complete the experience is climb to the top of the cupola!

Built by Filippo Brunelleschi who won the competition for its commission in 1418, the dome is egg-shaped and was made without scaffolding. The raising of this dome, the largest in the world in its time, was no easy architectural feat. At the base of the dome, just above the drum, Baccio d'Agnolo began adding a balcony in 1507. One of the eight sides was finished by 1515, when someone asked Michelangelo - whose artistic opinion was by this time taken as cardinal law - what he thought of it. The master reportedly scoffed, "It looks like a cricket cage." Work was immediately halted, and to this day the other seven sides remain rough brick!

You Need to Reserve

The only way to see the inside of the dome up close and enjoy the extraordinary view of Florence it offers is to climb its 463 steps (there is no elevator): the route takes you by the interior of the dome where you can admire Giorgio Vasari 's frescoes of the Last Judgment (1572-9) up close.

The OPA Combination ticket gives you entrance to the Duomo but you need to reserve your place in line BEFORE. Once you book your time slot, it CANNOT be changed .

The way up (and down) are basically tight corridors used by the workmen who built the cathedral for maintenance, they were never thought of as being open to the public. They are narrow, the steps can be steep and the entire climb is 463 steps. When you reach the base of the drum right below the cupola's frescoes, you actually come out onto a walkway (you can see in the photo below).

While they were designed by Vasari, they were actually mostly painted by his less-talented student Frederico Zuccari and finished by 1579. The frescoes were subjected to a thorough cleaning completed in 1996, which many people saw as a waste of restoration funds when so many more important works throughout the city were waiting to be salvaged. The scrubbing did, however, bring out Zuccari's innovative color palette.

Continue upwards through the two shells of the cupola and out onto the lantern, from which you can enjoy impressive views of the city.

Around the Piazza del Duomo, we also recommend you visit the Baptistery and the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo , where you can see up close many of the original statues and decorative elements from the cathedral as well as Ghiberti's original Baptistery doors (the ones outside are copies). Make sure to visit the inside of the cathedral if you haven't done so yet. If you want to see another view of Florence, you can also climb up to the top of Giotto's bell tower .
