If BTS' anthology album "Proof" is a musical record documenting the act's nine-year career, "2022 BTS Exhibition: Proof" invites fans to immerse themselves in a visual trail of BTS' history.

Upon walking into the Seoul exhibition at the Hybe Insight building, which opened on Sept. 28, visitors are greeted by gigantic concept images of the seven K-pop superstars from its latest album "Proof." The album, which dropped in June, wrapped up the 9-year-old band's first chapter in their career.

The exhibition features images and videos of the members that were taken during music video shoots and concerts. Most of them have been unveiled before, but some were also being shown for the first time. Props in music videos and outfits worn by the members in the videos and during concerts are also on display.

Some parts of the exhibition made fans linger longer, such as videos taken during the "Proof" jacket photo shoots that showed each members up close. The next corridor was also congested with fans poring over dance practice videos, old and new, their faces pressed up close to the small screens.

The last room is filled with some of the band's most celebrated moments. Colorful snapshots from the band's world tours, from the 2018 world tour "Love Yourself" to 2022 "Permission to Dance On Stage: Las Vegas," covers one side of the wall. The other side is decorated with film pictures of the members from 2018, some taken by the artists themselves. Perhaps what shone the brightest in the room was the trophy corner, packed with Guinness World Records certificates, a plate commemorating BTS' first Billboard Hot 100 win and historic magazine covers.

Seeing the fans out of the exhibition are handwritten messages from each of the members. "I hope this exhibition fills up a block of your memory," wrote Jin. Another message, in what seems like Jimin's handwriting, read, "We won't forget the warmth you showed us, and we promise to grow warmer so that you don't lose that smile."

If you expect a tight-knit chronology made up of never-before-revealed materials, you might be disappointed, but taking an 80-minute walk through the exhibition, it would be enough to evoke nostalgia for the fans who have been beside BTS on their journey.

The Seoul exhibition runs until Nov. 22 at Hybe Insight, an exhibition venue run by Hybe, the multilabel firm under which BTS' label Big Hit Entertainment is affiliated.

The same exhibition opened on Wednesday in Busan's Haeundae LCT The Sharp as part of the group's "The City" project. "The City" is an immersive festival site for fans visiting ahead of the act's Asiad Main Stadium concert on Oct. 15. The concert was organized to support and promote Busan's 2030 World Expo bid.

5 Takeaways From BTS' New Album 'Proof'

After a few years of smash hits, BTS have cemented their relevance in music. With old and new tracks, 'Proof' puts the focus back on what truly matters: their love for their fans.

BTS have catapulted to unprecedented levels of stardom in the two years since their last Korean release, BE. They became the first K-pop act to be nominated for a GRAMMY, broke countless chart and streaming records, and sold out stadiums across the globe. BTS has already proven there's nothing they can't do — hence, their anthology album, Proof, feels perfectly timed. It reintroduces BTS to the world by solidifying them as who they are: musicians who inspire.

Just in time for the group's 9th anniversary, Proof features classic songs, unreleased gems, and three new songs for fans to enjoy. Though BTS has spent the last year or so releasing infectious English tracks, this three-disc album showcases their depth and lyrical ability in addition to their knack for producing catchy pop hits. A return to their primarily Korean music, it feels like BTS is home once again.

With 48 tracks in total, there's something to discover for fans both new and old. Ultimately, everyone who listens to Proof will understand the musical journey BTS has experienced since their debut.

Here are 5 takeaways from BTS' new album Proof.

It's A Love Letter Between ARMY And BTS

From the rough demos, to the care taken in ordering the tracks, to special songs like "Born Singer" from 2013, Proof is an album only true fans will be able to fully understand and appreciate. And that's exactly the point.

After a couple years of issuing radio-friendly hits, BTS chose to release a project that would mean something to the fans that have rooted for them over the years. Ahead of the release, the group's RM commented , "As the focus of the album is our message for our fans who have been together with us for the past nine years, we paid the most attention to our lyrics."

"Yet to Come" Has A Message Of Hope

Like the title suggests, "Yet to Come (The Most Beautiful Moment in Life)" initially feels like a lost track from BTS' 2015 EP The Most Beautiful Moment in Life . Listen again, and you can pinpoint different lyrics that chronicle the group's journey from humble hip-hop group to your friendly neighborhood superstars: "That uncomfortable title we were given one day/We are still abashed by being called the best," the Korean lyrics translate. "You know, I just love music/ Nothing much has changed from back then."

The story isn't stuck in the past, though. There's a clear message of hope, that something better is coming for whoever listens.

"Run BTS" Is Just As Fun As The Show

Most ARMYs know about the variety show  BTS have been doing since 2015, "Run BTS, " in which they play games and do various activities as a group. Just like the fan-favorite show — which has allowed fans to watch the group bond with each over the years — the new track of the same name is flavorful and uptempo with the perfect dash of hip-hop.

With RM, Suga, j-hope, and Jungkook working on the song, it's definitely a team effort. Although emotional ballads make up a good deal of the album, "Run BTS" captures the high-energy antics for which the group is known and loved.

"For Youth" Is About Gratitude

Much of Proof is fan-centric, but "For Youth" definitely takes the cake. Youth is not about age, but the feeling of being with someone that makes life feel worth living. For BTS, that's ARMY, and vice versa.

At the beginning of the song, a packed stadium sings "Epilogue: Young Forever" to the boys. The track highlights that special moment, providing an opportunity for BTS to respond in a poignant way. Lyrics like, "I open my eyes and it's 10 years ago/ Hanging around Nonhyeon-dong" and "That flower cared for, thanks to you I could be me" paint a perfect picture of the memories shared.

It's Hard Not To Cry

BTS have always been in touch with their emotional side, and they've never shied away from vulnerability in their music. But it's arguably more apparent than ever on Proof . Throughout all 48 tracks (especially the disc of exclusive demos), there's a certain rawness that further humanizes the group.

With Proof, BTS managed to capture some of the most special moments of their career while adding new ones. Whether they're highlighting well-appreciated tracks like "Spring Day," adding fan-loved unofficial favorites like "Born Singer," or summing up their journey with new tracks that focus on reflection and storytelling, the album serves as an exquisite recollection of BTS' history and hope for the future.

The record is timely, as it comes at a time where the group seems larger than life, but clearly aims to remind the world that anything is possible with passion and hard work. Thinking back on how long the journey to recognition has been for the septet warrants a tear or two, and sharing the moment with fans makes it even more special.

While happy songs like "Dynamite" have helped them dominate the mainstream, Proof is a reminder that BTS' ability to touch their audience is not limited to one emotion, one genre or one moment — and the proof is in the music.

Why Is BTS So Popular? 9 Questions About The K-Pop Phenoms Answered

J-Hope performing in 2022

J-Hope's Road To 'Hope On The Street Vol.1,' From Falling Back In Love With Dance To Tying Together His Global Influences

After 11 years in BTS, j-hope revisits the passion that started it all: dancing. Ahead of his new docuseries and special album, 'Hope on the Street Vol.1,' discover the full-circle journey that brought him back to his roots.

"Just dance," j-hope commands on his 2018 BTS solo track.

For the international sensation, that's what it's always been about: expressing himself through movement. Now, 11 years after the launch of the seven-piece group, j-hope takes a U-turn to where it all began, before his K-pop idol days, street dancing between his hometown, Gwangju, and Seoul, South Korea.

Out March 29, j-hope's new special album, Hope on the Street Vol.1 , is a musical ode to dancing that boasts a "vibrant collection of six tracks spanning a diverse array of sounds and moods that showcase j-hope's musical prowess and depth." Like j-hope's global perspective of dance, the EP expands borders and sounds, featuring appearances from HYBE labelmate HUH YUNJIN of LE SSERAFIM as well as American stars Nile Rodgers and Benny Blanco .

The mini-album will also be accompanied by a docuseries of the same name, premiering on Amazon Prime Video on March 28. According to a press statement, the six-part project will "highlight j-hope's story and love for dancing as he begins a new journey."

Ahead of Hope on the Street Vol.1 's arrival, take a look at how j-hope's origins inspired the project — from his enrollment in a local dance academy to songwriting with J. Cole on their 2023 single, "on the street."

Finding Purpose In Dance

Long before becoming a global superstar, j-hope (born Jung Ho-seok) first discovered his love for dancing on the playground.

"The school I went to had a dance lesson for 30 minutes in the morning. They would play a dance video, and we would copy it as exercise," j-hope recalled in a 2013 interview for the BTS Japan Fanclub magazine. "My friends around me would praise me, saying, 'You're really good!'"

Eventually, those recess workouts turned into a passion. J-hope began practicing moves at home and freestyling at local talent shows. By the sixth grade, he told his parents he was serious about it, enrolling him in Gwangju's Joy Dance Academy.

While at the Academy, j-hope also joined the underground dance crew, NEURON, building a reputation under the name "Smile Hoya." Though he hasn't participated in the troupe since his pre-BTS days, he still recognizes it as one of the most influential parts of his career.

He'll even honor the crew with Hope on the Street , which includes a track called "NEURON," featuring Gaeko and yoonmirae . He will also return to Gwangju in the closing chapter of the docuseries.

It's not the first time j-hope shouted out Gwangju, either. His 2019 collab with Becky G, "Chicken Noodle Soup," paid tribute to his beloved upbringing: "From Gwangju, one gang of you-know-what/ Geumnam Chungjang Street, that's my Harlem." (The same track also foreshadowed his latest release: "Hope on the street, now it's my own way.")

Forging A New Life In Music With BTS

J-hope continued to have a diligent mindset as a trainee at Big Hit Entertainment. But as revealed in BTS' 2018 docuseries, Burn the Stage , training and dieting became emotionally and physically tolling. At one point, j-hope even considered leaving the group.

"I couldn't do things I wanted to do," he revealed during a 2021 You Quiz on the Block segment . "To be honest, I wanted to play games. I want to go out and hang out. I wanted to stay with my family. I had to give up a lot of things from that perspective."

The stress became so intense that he bought a one-way ticket to Gwangju. But ultimately, the brotherhood and love of music he formed with BTS gave him the courage to return: "I came back because I trusted you," j-hope recounted.

And they trusted him, too: "I told [Big Hit] that we needed Jung Ho-seok. We couldn't debut without him," RM responded. Meanwhile, Jung Kook delivered a tearful speech to encourage him to stay with the band.

The longer he stayed, the more j-hope began to love other sides of music, like producing and songwriting. Now, he has become one of the main writers for the group's tracks, alongside RM and Suga , and has co-penned all of his solo projects, including Hope on the Street .

Spreading His Wings With Two Full-Length Solo Projects

After nearly 10 projects with BTS, j-hope delivered his debut mixtape, Hope World , in March 2018.

"My fantasy had always been making a music video and performing with the music I had created. I wanted to put my own story to music and share it with the world," he told Time magazine upon Hope World ’s release.

It's an introduction to j-hope the artist, inviting listeners to step into Hope World , a colorful kaleidoscope of different cultures and styles — something that has also been a key part of his dance journey.

Though, j-hope still wanted to dig deeper into his artistry. He developed his sound, becoming more vulnerable in his lyricism on tracks like 2020's "Outro: Ego." By 2022, he was ready to drop his first studio album, Jack in the Box .

Where Hope World showcases j-hope's dance performance, Jack in the Box highlights "my artistry in music ." But Hope on the Street paints the full image of the phenom — part musician, part dancer.

Laying The Groundwork With "On The Street," Featuring J. Cole

One of j-hope's earliest musical influences was J. Cole. The rapper inspired j-hope's stage name and the title of his mixtape, which pays homage to 2011's Cole World . In 2022, j-hope honored Cole with "Born Singer," the BTS re-write of Cole's "Born Sinner." So, a celebratory meeting was in order when they were both scheduled to perform at Lollapalooza (where j-hope made history as the first Korean soloist to headline).

"[He's] my idol," j-hope said to Variety in 2023. Since they met, he "couldn't stop thinking about how great it would be if we could make music together." He reached out to J. Cole, and "on the street" was born.

As j-hope told Variety , the "street" concept became a metaphor for life: "The street is a place where people can actually encounter and feel real lives of people: a child's innocent mind; first encounter with someone and falling in love; someone in an urgent moment;" and so much more. It's the place where he learned to love dance — and where he grew a love for music and artists like J. Cole, who called their collab "a blessing" in the behind-the-scenes footage .

And thus, "on the street" became the springboard for his forthcoming project, Hope on the Street .

Unveiling A Docuseries And A Multi-Part Project

By the tail end of 2023, each member of BTS had enlisted in mandatory military service. But even during the septet's hiatus, j-hope managed to serve up a surprise announcement of Hope on the Street on Feb. 17 with a fitting montage of dance videos.

The joint docuseries and album follows j-hope's journey of self-discovery, accompanying his former instructor, Boogaloo Kin, as they dance their way through the streets of Osaka, Seoul, Paris, New York, and his hometown while meeting other dancers.

" Hope on the Street , my roots, the most important part of my life. This is how j-hope danced. I wanted to share this story with you," he said in an interview for the documentary .

After years of breaking records and making history as a member of BTS, it was "a chance to look back on my life," he explained in another trailer . "I realized the answer was in song and dance."

Culminating j-hope's skills in both art forms, Hope on the Street is a love letter to everything that's made him who he is today — and proof he'll never forget it.

6 Takeaways From 'BTS Monuments: Beyond The Star'

9 Essential K-Pop/Western Collabs: From BTS And Megan Thee Stallion, To IVE And Saweetie

From Jungkook and Usher's tribute to their shared musical idol, to BLACKPINK and Selena Gomez' sugary sweet collab, K-pop and Western artists of all genres are joining forces to create killer hits.

It’s impossible to ignore the growing global popularity of K-pop. Although Korean pop has been around for decades, the genre's meteoric worldwide success over the past 10 years is reminiscent of Beatlemania and the early 2000s American boy band craze. With a steady increase year-over-year in album sales and K-pop groups touring the U.S. and Europe, interest in K-pop shows no signs of slowing down .

Initially launched in South Korea as a music subgenre with Western pop, R&B and hip-hop influences in the '90s, the K-pop industry is valued at around $10 billion .

Given the worldwide appetite for K-pop, several Western musicians are keen to partner with K-pop acts crossing over into more international markets, often with songs sung partially or entirely in English. While K-pop artists do not need Western artists to be successful — BTS sold out London’s Wembley stadium in under 90 minutes back in 2019, and BLACKPINK made Coachella history twice with performances in 2019 and 2023 — K-pop's massive fanbase and multi-genre influence make it an ideal collaboration for everyone from rappers and singers to electronic DJs.

But don’t take our word for it. Here are nine of the most iconic K-Pop/Western collaborations (not in any order; they are all great songs!).

Usher and Jungkook - "Standing Next to You (Usher Remix)" (2024)

The maknae (the youngest member of the group) of global K-pop superstars BTS and the King of R&B are both having banner years: Jungkook released his debut solo album, and Usher just performed at the Super Bowl .

The Bangtan Boys have cited Usher as a significant influence (even singing a callback to his 2001 hit "U Got It Bad" in their No. 1 song, "Butter"), so BTS fans were delighted when the Jungkook tapped Usher for a remix of "Standing Next to You." The song marks the fourth single from his Billboard 200 chart-topping debut album, Golden .

Both singers count Michael Jackson as a major influence. In their collaboration video, Usher and Jungkook pay tribute to the King of Pop as they slide, pop, and lock across the slick floor of an abandoned warehouse.

John Legend and Wendy of Red Velvet - "Written in the Stars" (2018)

R&B singer/pianist John Legend was the perfect choice for an R&B ballad with Wendy, the main vocalist of K-pop quintet Red Velvet. The final song on the five-track SM Station x 0 , a digital music project, "Written in the Stars," is a beautiful, mid-tempo love song. A bit of a departure from K-pop’s typical upbeat sound, Wendy and Legend are in perfect harmony over a warm yet melancholic rhythm.

As Red Velvet’s main vocalist, Wendy was the ideal voice for this collaboration. Additionally, she split her childhood between Canada and the U.S., and has been comfortable singing in English since Red Velvet debuted in 2014. This wasn't her first collab with a Western artist: In 2017, she released an English-language version of the pop ballad " Vente Pa’Ca " with Ricky Martin .

BLACKPINK and Selena Gomez - "Ice Cream" (2020)

A powerhouse debut single, BLACKPINK collaborated with pop royalty Selena Gomez on the massive 2020 hit "Ice Cream."

An electropop-bubblegum fusion filled with dairy double entendres, "Ice Cream" was an enormous success for both Gomez and the BLACKPINK girls. The track peaked at No. 13 on the Billboard Hot 100 and has racked up nearly 900 million YouTube views to date.

Written by a consortium of hitmakers, including Ariana Grande and BLACKPINK’s longtime songwriter and producer Teddy Park (a former K-pop idol himself), "Ice Cream" shows that YG Entertainment’s golden foursome and Gomez were the correct partnership for this track. The pop-trap bop marked the first time a K-pop girl group broke the Top 20 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and immediately solidified BLACKPINK as global superstars.

Snoop Dogg and Monsta X - "How We Do" (2022)

West Coast rap godfather Snoop Dogg has quietly become one of the go-to Western acts for K-pop collabs, working with Psy, BTS, Girls’ Generation and 2NE1. K-pop is the Dogg Father's "guilty pleasure, " and he performed at the Mnet Asian Music Awards with Dr. Dre in 2011. Without Snoop's love of K-pop, the world might not have gotten this fun and energetic collaboration with Snoop and Monsta X, a five-member boy group under Starship Entertainment.

The song appears in The Spongebob Movie: Sponge On The Run in a dance segment where Snoop, decked out in a pink and purple Western suit, is accompanied by zombie dancers. Though we do not see the members of Monsta X, their harmonious crooning is the perfect accent to Snoop Dogg’s trademark casual West Coast flow.

BTS and Steven Aoki - "MIC Drop (Steve Aoki remix)" (2017)

No K-pop list is complete with a nod to the magnificent seven, and "MIC Drop" is one of their catchiest Western collabs to date.

"Mic Drop" is quintessential BTS: a nod to hip-hop with a heavy bass line and fun choreography. While the original version of "MIC Drop" is excellent, the remix with EDM superstar DJ Steve Aoki and rapper Desiigner cracked the Top 40 on the Billboard Hot 100 — the first of many hits for the Bulletproof Boy Scouts.

Released at a time when BTS were just starting their ascent to chart-topping Western dominance, the track's boastful lyrics and tension-building electro-trap production offered an excellent introduction to the group that would soon become international superstars.

JYJ, Kanye West and Malik Yusef - "Ayyy Girl" (2010)

A truly deep K-pop cut, you’d be hard-pressed to find many people who know that Kanye West collaborated with a first-generation K-pop group over 13 years ago. Released as the lead single on JYJ’s English-language album The Beginning , West’s signature bravado and wordplay are on full display over a track that sounds like the Neptunes produced it.

The song garnered attention in the U.S., but after a string of bad luck (including a severely delayed U.S. visa process and issues with their management company, SM Entertainment), JYJ could not capitalize on their American success. The group continued to see success in Korea and Japan in the early 2010s but never made a splash in the Western market again.

IVE and Saweetie - "All Night" (2024)

A reimagining of Icona Pop’s 2013 song of the same name, "All Night," sees fourth-generation K-pop girl group IVE partner with rap’s resident glamor girl Saweetie for a funky, electronic-infused pop song that’s perfect for dancing from dusk till dawn.

"All Night" is the first English song for the Starship Entertainment-backed group. Interestingly, none of the members of IVE have individual lines in the song, choosing instead to sing the lyrics in a six-part harmony. This choice is exciting but fun, giving listeners the feeling that they are more than welcome to sing along.

The girl group embarked on their first 24-date world tour in January 2024, with stops in the U.S., Asia, Europe and South America. Given their quest for global dominance, there’s a good chance "All Night" won’t be IVE's last English-language release.

BTS and Megan Thee Stallion - "Butter (Remix)" (2021)

BTS’ "Butter" had already spent three weeks atop the Billboard charts and was declared the "song of the summer" when the group’s label announced Houston rapper Megan Thee Stallion as the guest star for the song’s remix in late August 2021. The GRAMMY-nominated septet is no stranger to collaborating with Western musicians, having worked with Halsey , Jason Derulo, and Coldplay .

Though only slightly altered from the original (Megan’s verse was added in place of the song’s second original verse, along with several ad-libs), the remix was praised by both fans and critics alike, catapulting the song’s return back to the No. 1. Although the collaborators did not release a new music video featuring the group and the self-proclaimed "Hot Girl Coach," three members of BTS’ "dance line" (members J-Hope , Jungkook and Jimin ) released a specially choreographed dance video . Additionally, Megan was a surprise guest during BTS’ record-breaking Permission to Dance LA concert in November of the same year.

LE SSERAFIM and Niles Rodgers - "Unforgiven" (2023)

GRAMMY Lifetime Achievement Award recipient Nile Rodgers ' first foray into K-pop was a partnership with LE SSERAFIM , a fourth-gen girl group from the same parent company behind BTS. "Unforgiven" was released earlier this year as the lead single from the group’s debut album of the same name.

A darker take on the familiar K-pop formula with A Western feel and look (the young quintuplet dons cowboy hats, boots and bolo ties in the song’s accompanying music video), "Unforgiven" is about rebellion and being a fierce, strong and independent risk taker. That riskiness drew Rodgers' ear.

"It seems like a lot of the K-pop that I'm hearing lately, the…chord changes are a lot more interesting than what's been happening [in other music fields] over the last few years," he told GRAMMY.com in 2023. "I come from a jazz background, so to hear chord changes like that is really cool. They’re not afraid, which is great to me."

6 Takeaways From 'BTS Monuments: Beyond The Star'

In honor of BTS' 10th anniversary, Disney+ released 'BTS Monuments: Beyond the Star.' Two of the eight episode docuseries are available to stream; read on for a deeper look at the septet's history, accomplishments, and behind-the-scenes moments.

Today, it’s hard to avoid BTS . You might have heard their GRAMMY-nominated singles "Dynamite" and "Butter" playing at a random store. Maybe you learned about another record they broke in the news. Or, you probably know at least one person in their passionate, loyal fanbase, also known as Army.

But before there was BTS, the international sensation, there was Kim Seok-jin ( Jin ), Min Yoon-gi ( Suga ), Jung Ho-seok ( J-Hope ), Kim Nam-joon ( RM ), Park Ji-min ( Jimin ), Kim Tae-hyung ( V ), and Jeon Jung-kook ( Jung Kook ), seven hopefuls from across South Korea with one dream and thousands of hours of dedication to their craft.

A decade ago, it might have seemed impossible for a group like BTS to be at the top in their home country — let alone one of the biggest groups on the planet. In Korea, it was only likely to become successful if you had one of the legacy names, such as SM Entertainment, backing you, and they came from the virtually unknown Big Hit Entertainment (now Big Hit Music under conglomerate HYBE).

Year after year, the septet defied odds, from winning Best New Artist at the esteemed Melon Music Awards in 2013 to earning Top Social Artist across the globe at the Billboard Music Awards consecutively between 2017 and 2021. They have amassed 26 Guinness World Records and became the first Korean act to receive multiple nods from the GRAMMYs.

In honor of their 10th anniversary as BTS, Disney+ released BTS Monuments: Beyond the Star . The docuseries offers a deeper look at the septet's massive accomplishments, tracing back to their initial auditions in 2010. The first two of eight episodes are available to stream now.

Below, discover everything we learned thus far about the icons in their latest docuseries, BTS Monuments: Beyond the Star .

The BTS Grind Never Stops

You see their flawless choreography, calculated facial expressions and glamorous outfits, but you never know the amount of preparation it takes to get there.

For example, BTS rehearsed the lead single, "Danger," from their debut studio album, Dark & Wild , until the wee hours of the morning for weeks. They then traveled to Los Angeles to promote the single and, despite Big Hit’s unstable financial state, implemented a huge budget to produce the music video. The goal was to win the television competition "SBS Inkigayo."

"As expected, we didn’t place first and left the charts in a day," RM remarks in the episode.

The intense training and dieting caused them to question if their slow traction was worth the battle. "To be honest, I didn’t think this was fun in the past," Jin tearfully mentioned in a 2013 fan meeting. "There were a lot of things they couldn’t get started because they weren’t sure what path we were on."

Through their frustrations, BTS never gave up, and eventually, the perseverance led to their first mega-hits, "I Need U" and "Fire" in 2017. They obtained their desired results and still never decreased their work ethic, which skyrocketed their career to an even higher level. "We’ve always worked hard, whether there was a crisis or not," Jin explains.

Everyone Had Their Unique Strengths

What makes BTS a powerhouse is that each member had a clear-cut reason they joined, and as Suga notes, it took "countless" changes to perfect it into the current lineup.

According to HYBE chairman and the group’s creator, Bang Si-hyuk, he was impressed by RM’s "depth of character and base of knowledge"; Suga had a unique sarcastic, dark side; J-Hope was "the personification of diligence" and a strong dancer; Jin’s handsome features would easily attract a fandom; Jung Kook had "a lot" of potential; V was effortlessly charming; and Jimin was instantly talented and intrigued the team.

They’re More Than Colleagues — They’re Family

It’s common for manufactured groups not to bond beyond the stage. However, BTS see themselves more like family than co-workers.

Showing up for one another’s personal affairs was second nature. Without question, they watched Jung Kook enter high school, taking photos and teasing their younger brother, or maknae . The docuseries also flashes back to J-Hope’s surprise birthday party, where the six created a sentimental video of his family.

"I had found my place," J-Hope shares. "I believe that [joining BTS] was the most fateful moment of my life."

Being A K-Pop Idol Wasn’t Always Respected

For many aspiring musicians, especially those of Asian heritage, becoming an idol is the ultimate goal. You completely surrender to your art, spending nearly every waking hour doing what you love. If you’re lucky enough to debut at a company like HYBE, you will undoubtedly join the ranks of K-pop’s most influential. Better than anyone else, BTS knows that wasn’t always the case.

"There was a strong negative view of idols," Suga recounts of their breakthrough EP The Most Beautiful Moment in Life . "Nowadays, we are acknowledged for our achievements and performances overseas, but it was a really agonizing time for us back then. We had a lot of unreasonable controversies."

They became "desperate and spiteful," but because of the support from the Army, they overcame the rough patch and switched the narrative. As a thank you to their fans, they wrote "2! 3!" to say, "Let’s forget it all."

The United States Was A Turning Point In Their Career

By 2016, BTS knew they were stars in Korea. They performed in the biggest venue at the time, the Olympic Gymnastics Arena, with a capacity of 25,000 people. They won the Mnet Asian Music Awards' most coveted honor: Artist Of The Year.

"In a movie, the credits would start rolling. At that point, we’d done everything we could as Korean artists," Suga says with a laugh. So, what’s next? Conquer the rest of the world.

The following year, BTS performed at the Billboard Music Awards, certain that nothing would come of it. To their surprise, they won Top Social Artist, which had previously only been awarded to Justin Bieber .

"It was the start of raising people’s awareness of us as the group BTS," RM reveals. Things continued to snowball: they performed at the American Music Awards and dropped a remix with Steve Aoki.

By early 2022, BTS were making history. The group performed their smash hit "Butter" onstage at the 64th GRAMMY Awards.

They Believe In The Power Of Art

When the pandemic began in 2020, entertainment was the first sacrifice. "‘Concerts may never be held again. People are unable to gather,’" Suga recalls hearing on broadcasts. They began to wonder if there was a point in releasing music.

After two years of self-reflection and improvement, they knew COVID-19 could not be the end. Music gave them purpose. "That was the driving force," J-Hope says. "I wasn’t completely aware of how important music and dancing was to me. I realized that I shouldn’t take it all for granted."

The lockdown also showed them the impact Army had on their lives. They motivated them to keep going because they knew how much the band meant to their fans. They witnessed it constantly when they saw the fervent cheers and tears on tour. BTS has brought together millions of people. As Namjoon promises, "Art can change the world," and "Music transcends languages, nationalities and races."

11 Iconic Concert Films To Watch After 'Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour'

The concert film seems to be having a moment. From the Talking Heads to Queen, read on for 11 concert film experiences that will help keep the party going.

A lavender haze has descended upon movie theaters across America.

Taylor Swift ’s filmed version of her historic Eras tour is the movie-music event of the year, dominating the box office becoming highest grossing dometic concert film in Hollywood history after a single weekend. Byt the time the Eras credits roll, you know all too well that you’re going to want to keep the party going.

Luckily, there are a breadth of artists whose musical singularity is reflected on the silver screen. Swift's major influence notwithstanding, the concert film seems to be having a moment in recent years: Pop stars such as Lizzo ( Live in Concert ), Selena Gomez ( My Mind and Me ) and Lewis Capaldi have released popular concert films.

From Beyoncé ’s stunning Homecoming , to acclaimed concert films from Queen to Talking Heads and new entries like from the boys in BTS , read on for 11 excellent concert film experiences.

Homecoming: A Film by Beyonce (2019)

When Beyoncé headlined the Coachella Music and Arts Festival — the first Black woman to do so — in 2018, she didn’t just perform; she delivered a tour de force extravaganza that spurred a whole new moniker: Beychella.

Shot over two nights, the Netflix film Homecoming includes a discography-spanning retrospective and memorable performances of "Run the World," "Single Ladies" and "Formation." Layered in ware nods to the Historically Black College and University experience, legends like Nina Simone and dazzling array of choreography, wardrobe and vocal chops .

The New Yorker later hailed it a "triumphant self portrait" and " a spectacle of soul." Directed by Queen Bey herself, Homecoming took home the golden gramophone for Best Music Film at hte 62nd GRAMMYs.

Stop Making Sense (1984)

The filmmaker Jonathan Demme is known for classics like Silence of the Lambs and Philadelphia , but he was also a major force in concert films. Among his achievements in this field is Stop Making Sense , his 1984 portrait of David Byrne and his Talking Heads.

Filmed at the peak of the band's popularity and following the release of Speaking in Tongues (which featured "This Must Be The Place" and "Burning Down the House,"), Stop Making Sense   is a cult classic, from its array of hits to the band’s massive suits which became their calling card.

The film was re-released in theaters last month. "I'm kind of looking at it and thinking, who is that guy?," said David Byrne in a recent interview with NPR about watching his younger self. "I'm impressed with the film and impressed with our performance. But I'm also having this really jarring experience of thinking, ‘He's so serious .’"

BTS: Yet to Come in Cinemas (2023)

While the GRAMMY-nominated South Korean superstars BTS may be on a break — Jung Kook recently announced that he will release his debut solo full-length - bask in the glow of the K-pop and their rollicking concert film earlier this year. In the film, Jung Kook alongside Jin, RM, Jimin, V, J-Hope as they smoothly perform their calvadace of hits, including "Butter" and"Dynamite" in a 2022 performance for Busan, South Korea’s rally to host the 2030 World Expo.

The boys are actually no stranger to the genre, with Yet To Come marking their fifth concert film in addition to BTS Permission to Dance on Stage — Seoul: Live Viewing and 2020’s Break the Silence: The Movie among others.

Madonna: Truth or Dare (1991)

With off-stage footage shot in black and white and performances in vivid color, this early '90s classic depicts Queen Madge at the height of her power. Taken from an actual game Madonna and friends play towards the end of the film (to scandalous results), Truth or Dare showcases the breadth of Madonna’s superstardom up until that point with performances of classics like "Holiday" and "Like a Virgin" with its artfully-shot juxtaposition of performance and documentary footage a trailblazer in the concert film genre.

" The surprise of Truth or Dare is just what a blast Madonna is," wrote the Guardian on the occasion of the film’s 30th anniversary. "Nastily funny, openly horny, undisguised in her contempt for anyone she deems less fabulous than herself and her blessed collaborators."

Justin Bieber: Never Say Never (2011)

Way before Swiftmania, there was Bieber Fever. In the wake of Justin Bieber ’s explosive rise, Never Say Never interspersed performances with snapshots of his journey from humble Canadian roots to global pop force to be reckoned with.

Helmed by Jon M. Chu (who’d go onto direct blockbusters like Crazy Rich Asians and In the Heights ), Never Say Never is a time capsule of a younger, more innocent Bieber and his early earworm bubblegum hits. Until Swift's Eras is tallied it’s the top-grossing concert movie ever released in the USA.

Prince: Sign o’ the Times (1987)

This iconic concert film was once hard to come by; after its theatrical run, Sign o’ the Times was only issued on VHS and eventually went out of print. But thanks to the magic of streaming, one can now easily transport oneself back to the '80s and enjoy the magic that is Prince .

Directed by the artist and using his acclaimed 1987 album Sign o’ the Times as a jumping off point (the album itself was a 2017 inductee into the GRAMMY Hall of Fame), the film reminds viewers of the Purple One's magnetism. Under an array of colorful lights and performing to a raucous crowd, the icon may have died in 2016, but S ign o’ the Times serves as a deft time capsule of his royal talent.

Katy Perry: Part of Me (2012)

As Katy Perry was in the midst of releasing her acclaimed album Teenage Dream , the pop singer had the foresight to chronicle the ensuing pandemonium.

" I feel like it was, like, a big wave coming," she told ABC upon the release of Katy Perry: Part of Me , the 2012 concert film that documented her blockbuster California Dreams tour. "I thought to myself, 'Well, I think this is going to be a moment. Maybe I should catch it on tape. I'm either going to go completely mental, completely bankrupt, or have the best success of my life."

Fortunately the later wound up occurring, with the subsequent film a celebrity-packed (featuring everyone from Lady Gaga to Adele ) hit-filled ("Teenage Dream" and "California Girls") look into the life, times and music of the star.

Queen: Live at Wembley ‘86 (1986)

Freddie Mercury and Queen were staples of London's Wembley Stadium, performing many memorable shows, including an iconic turn at Live Aid in the early '80s and a Mercury tribute show in the '90s.

Songs like "We Will Rock You" and "We Are the Champions" fit right in on Wembley's massive stage, with the concert film depicting the thundering live versions of those classics. Relive those heady days with this film which showcases just what made Mercury and his band rock icons, and huge ones at that.

"Mercury was indeed a born ringmaster," wrote CNN in a piece about their status as stadium savants. "There was no alienating affectation, no wallowing in sentiment... Queen consciously wrote their songs as vehicles for theatrics."

Summer of Soul (2021)

Back in 1969, Stevie Wonder , Gladys Knight , Nina Simone and B.B. King joined forces for the Harlem Cultural Festival, a mostly forgotten multi-week legendary summit. That all changed when Roots frontman Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson obtained a treasure trove worth of footage and directed this stunning film, aptly dubbed Summer of Soul , which brought the event back to vivid life and subsequent acclaim including a GRAMMY Award for Best Music Film.

"It was gold," Thompson told Pitchfork of his process of sifting through the footage to create what would become a passion project. "If anything, it was an embarrassment of riches. It was too much. I kept this on a 24-hour loop for about six months straight. Slept to it. Traveled to it. It was the only thing I consumed."

Justin Timberlake + The Tennessee Kids (2016)

Also directed by Jonathan Demme and released before his 2017 death, J ustin Timberlake + The Tennessee Kids showcases Timberlake 's  popular 20/20 Experience World Tour and litany of solo hits including "Sexyback" and "Suit & Tie."

"I don’t think anything can compete with live performance," admitted Demme to Rolling Stone before his death in 2017. "You can’t beat it. But we strive to provide the most exciting interpretation of that feeling, as filmmakers. We can provide a roving best seat in the house. We can linger on closeups. We can follow the dynamics of the music. I love shooting music."

The Last Waltz (1978)

One of the earliest projects of director Martin Scorsese ’s career was helping edit the monumental film version of Woodstock in 1970. But as that decade progressed and the auteur became known for narrative features including Mean Streets, he revisited his roots by directing The Last Waltz. A trailblazer in the genre, the film captures the last performance of The Band featuring frontman Robbie Robertson alongside a range of guests including Bob Dylan , Ringo Starr and Eric Clapton . Filmed on Thanksgiving Day in 1976, it’s a time capsule of the day’s biggest acts at the height of their artistry.

"It's a picture that kind of saved my life at the time," Scorsese told an audience at the Toronto International Film Festival during a 2019 screening. "It's very special to me. Forty years on, it's very special to a great number of us."

BTS Set ‘Proof Live’ Event to Celebrate Release of New Album

By RS Editors

BTS are taking the stage for a special live event to mark the release of their new anthology album, Proof .

Last week, the group’s official Twitter account shared a poster for “Proof Live,” teasing a “special guest” alongside the seven members. The event takes place this Monday, June 13 at 9pm KST / 8am ET and is streaming on the group’s official YouTube channel, known as “ BANGTAN TV .”

BTS (방탄소년단) 'Proof' Live Official Poster 2022.06.13. 9PM KST | 8AM ET @ BANGTAN TV #BTS #방탄소년단 #BTS_Proof pic.twitter.com/pdM62uAzYg — BTS_official (@bts_bighit) June 6, 2022

Unlike previous BTS live streams, fans will be able to watch the BTS “Proof” live stream online for free, since their YouTube channel isn’t geo-blocked and doesn’t require a subscription to access.

The streaming event was likely filmed during the BTS “Permission to Dance” tour dates back in April, when the group was in Las Vegas for four nights of sold-out shows . The group first teased their new album during the last night of the tour, when the phrase “We are bulletproof” and the date “2022.06.10” was shown on screen. Of course we now know that refers to the name of the three-disc album, Proof , and the album’s release date on June 10.

As for who the special guest could be? It turned out to be — spoiler alert — Anderson .Paak, who met a few of the guys in BTS after they attended the Silk Sonic residency in Vegas.

BTS Profile

BTS, also known as the Bangtan Boys, are a South Korean boy band. They made their debut locally in 2013 but have rose to international prominence over the last few years. Their third full album, Love Yourself: Tear, made its debut at #1 on the Billboard 200 charts, making BTS the first ever Asian group to accomplish this feat.

Some of BTS’ biggest singles are DNA, Fake Love, Blood Sweat & Tears, Spring Day, and Mic Drop. Mic Drop was remixed by Steve Aoki and Lil Yachty and hit #28 on the Billboard Hot 100.

BTS is known for their large social media presence, BTS were listed by Forbes as the most retweeted artist on Twitter in March 2016. Following that, Twitter launched its first ever K-pop Twitter emoji featuring BTS in May. In October 2016, Billboard placed BTS as number one on their Social 50 chart, making them the first Korean group to top the chart. To date, they have spent 83 weeks as number one on the Social 50 chart. That same year, they also charted on YouTube’s Music Global Top 100: 17th on the video chart, 6th on the artist chart and 14th on the tracks chart. In May 2017, they won the Top Social Artist Award at the Billboard Music Awards, becoming the first Korean group to win a BBMA.

On November 20, 2017 Guinness World Records revealed that BTS had earned a spot in their 2018 edition for “having the world’s most Twitter engagements for a music group”. That December, they were revealed to be the most tweeted about celebrity in 2017, being “liked or retweeted over half a billion times (502 million)” worldwide, more than U.S. President Donald Trump and Justin Bieber combined.

BTS’ achievements led the group to be ranked number one on Forbes Korea Power Celebrity list for 2018, a list ranking South Korea’s most powerful and influential celebrities.

In 2019, the group went on a short hiatus following a busy tour and promo schedule. In the fall, they only made a few select appearances including becoming the first solo act to perform in Saudi Arabia. In 2020, a new BTS tour and album called Map of the Soul was announced. However, those shows had to be postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The only live shows in 2021 were four “Permission to Dance on Stage” shows in Los Angeles, LA.

In early 2022, BTS announced Permission to Dance on Stage in Las Vegas. Around the same time, they announced new music and a multi-disc albums et called Proof.

BTS

K-pop group BTS is continuing its world tour in April, with four newly announced dates at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. The global superstars will perform on April 8, 9, 15 and 16, with the last day of the tour being streamed live online. Additionally, the group’s event “Live Play in Las Vegas” will be held on all four days at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

The news comes after the group’s announcement last week of concert dates in Seoul, South Korea on March 10, 12 and 13 at the Seoul Olympic Stadium. Those performances will be BTS’ first in its home country since 2019. BTS performed four sold-out shows at SoFi stadium in Los Angeles at the end of last year, filling the stadium with tens of thousands of fans. According to Billboard , the group’s tour dates in L.A. grossed $33.3 million with 214,000 tickets sold — the most made by a run of shows at a single venue since 2012.

BTS is best known for hits “Butter” and “Dynamite,” with the former nominated for best pop duo/group performance at this year’s Grammy Awards . The nomination is BTS’ second, following last year’s nomination for “Butter.” The 64th Annual Grammy Awards will be held in Las Vegas just before BTS’ concert dates, on April 3 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. BTS has yet to win a Grammy, but is known for its extremely devoted fans who have helped catapult the group to global superstardom since its debut in 2013.

Registration to purchase tickets for the group’s new dates is open from now until Feb. 26 at 5 p.m., when tickets will go on sale. Tickets for BTS’ Los Angeles dates sold out almost immediately.

BTS fans are disappointed after thinking a world tour announcement was coming

bts proof world tour 2022

BTS  has been preparing to release its anthology album ' Proof ' and unveiled the album release schedule last month.

Recently, many fans were anticipating a BTS world tour announcement on June 7 KST because the release schedule only showed three question marks " ??? " With numerous idol groups resuming their world tours and traveling overseas for international concerts since COVID-19, restrictions have become lax.

bts7_biased

Therefore, many BTS fans were looking forward and hoping that the global K-pop group would announce the dates for a world tour as well. However, to the disappointment of some fans, BTS announced a 'Proof' Live event and released a teaser poster  on June 7. Before the teaser poster was released, many fans were expressing their excitement, looking forward to the world tour announcement but soon were disappointed and were fooled when the poster was released.

I love BTS and would love a world tour…but I am lowkey glad there’s no tour announcement right now. I think they need to rest…and just have time for themselves.

BTS

BTS celebrates its 10th anniversary on Tuesday, June 13, 2023, ringing in an entire decade of historic accomplishments at the milestone anniversary.

In an industry marked by imminent expiration dates, 10 years is considered unheard of for many pop groups—no matter where they call home. But BTS have risen far above any short, rise-and-fall arc, as they continue to reach new heights even in their current “Chapter Two” by balancing solo careers alongside their group activities. Both as a septet and on their own, members RM, Jin, J-Hope, Suga, Jimin, V and Jung Kook keep breaking their records after remapping an entirely new future for South Korean crossover success in the States.

Formed in 2013 by Big Hit Entertainment (the humble record label that eventually had a corporate rebranding into today’s HYBE ), all seven members used to share one bedroom . The image of the group handing out flyers to a Los Angeles concert in 2014 was immortalized in their show, American Hustle Life . But now, the K-pop phenoms are living comfortably in luxury apartments , selling out stadiums in minutes and earning recognition from the industry’s most prominent artists and awards shows.

To continue the celebrations for BTS’ annual Festa, Billboard updated its critics’ list of top tracks and extended it to a clean 60 songs. The initial Top 50 created for BTS’ fifth anniversary in 2018 sees new BTS classics (including their several Hot 100 No. 1s) join the list as well as beloved B-sides (scroll through to see where tracks like “Blue & Grey” or “Run BTS” land). For the purposes of this list, the only songs considered were those released by the group or credited to BTS, and not solo releases—those solo songs could make their own stacked Top 60 as well.

Happy birthday to Bangtan and here’s to all the hits “Yet to Come.”

"Butter" ( Butter , 2021)

BTS "Butter"

The smooth, smash summer single was BTS’ second solo No. 1 on the Hot 100 and earned the group their second Grammy nomination. But best of all, it features RM shouting out how the group has “got ARMY right behind us” in his rap section.  — JEFF BENJAMIN

Listen above.

“A Supplementary Story: You Never Walk Alone” ( You Never Walk Alone , 2017)

One of the first things to learn about BTS is that nothing they do is incidental (see: any of the exhaustive fan theories the members themselves have acknowledged.) The heartbeat at the start of “A Supplementary Story: You Never Walk Alone,” then, is a befitting and intentional touch to one of the group’s more heartfelt tracks, which sees the members oscillate between expressing their gratitude and encouraging the listener to crawl, run and fly toward their dreams as the instrumental shimmers behind them. —  MONIQUE MELENDEZ

Listen here .

"Yet to Come" ( Proof , 2022)

Co-written with pop singer-songwriter (and ARMY member) MAX, “Yet to Come” was a comforting and therapeutic release for the band who might have shaken the world upon announcing they were releasing solo projects in BTS’ “Chapter Two” but the music proves that they still believe the “best moment is yet to come.” The official music video also honored the stars’ past eras, but excitement about what was to come was clear from Jung Kook’s opening line: Was it honestly the best? ‘Cause I just wanna see the next.” — J.B.

“Don’t Leave Me” (Face Yourself, 2018)

As if it wasn’t clear from their feats of international chart-topping, BTS’ music connects in any language — as further seen by this stunning Japanese-language release. The hardcore synth production is powered by melancholy belting from Jimin, Jin and Jung Kook, as the band pleads with a lover to stay. — J.B.

“Outro: Love Is Not Over” ( The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, Pt. 1 , 2015)

BTS’ vocalists take center stage on this R&B ballad written and composed in part by Jung Kook and Jin. Jung Kook, Jin, Jimin and V express the lyrics’ longing with a soft sincerity, while the dense production, bass-laden chorus and brilliantly placed harmonies make the track one of the more memorable bookend tracks in BTS’ discography. —  M.M.

 “Attack on Bangtan” ( O!RUL8,2? , 2013)

This anthemic song, also known as “The Rise of Bangtan,” is a swaggering, funky hip-hop track through which BTS hype up themselves and their potential. With lines like, “Climbing to the top is a matter of time” and “If you don’t know us, get [ready] to know us well,” the group state their intentions for future domination in the most rambunctious of ways. —  TAMAR HERMAN

“Just One Day” ( Skool Luv Affair , 2014)

With sweet harmonies guiding the raps and exuding warmth in the swaying chorus, “Just One Day” reveals a softer side to BTS through its mellow R&B melody. Coming after their previously released trio of dynamic hip-pop singles — “No More Dream,” “We Are Bulletproof pt. 2” and “N.O” — it was the first time the group slowed down a bit and put the dulcet quality of their vocalists front and center.  —  T.H.

“MIC Drop” ( Love Yourself: Her , 2017)

BTS

*record scratch* *freeze frame* Yup, that’s BTS filling their bag with trophies. You may be wondering how they got there. But give “MIC Drop” a listen, and you’ll have the answer soon enough. The intensity of the song is the product of a potent mixture: an ominous, trap-infused beat rages against boastful lyricism befitting a world class act. The remix with  Steve Aoki  and  Desiigner  went on to hit  No. 28 on the Hot 100 , but we also appreciate the original inspired by  Barack Obama’s memeworthy mic drop . No need to be  sorry  to  Billboard . —  CAITLIN KELLEY

“Intro: Never Mind” ( The Most Beautiful Moment In Life, Pt. 2 , 2015)

Performed almost entirely by Suga, “Never Mind” serves as the introductory track to the  Most Beautiful Moment In Life, Pt. 2 , setting up the album’s success with its reflective take on BTS’ struggles. Co-written by the rapper, it examines how, when working towards his goal of being a musician, Suga urged himself forward through hardships by shrugging them off, or never minding them. —  T.H.

“Singularity” ( Love Yourself: Tear , 2018)

As  Tear’s  opening track, “Singularity” serves as a mood setter that doesn’t aim to stun or overwhelm. The R&B burner haunts the listener with its languorous tempo, sudden pauses, distant ad-libs, and brooding lyrics (“Even in my momentary dreams/ The illusions that torture me are still the same,” V confesses.) On “Singularity,” V excels, with his luxurious baritone molding to fit the song’s contours. —  M.M.

"We Are Bulletproof : The Eternal" ( Map of the Soul: 7 , 2020)

A gorgeous dedication to ARMY, this defining anthem brings the intensity and spectacle of BTS’ most meaningful hits with a humble sentiment: “We were only seven/ But we have you all now…/ We are, we are together, bulletproof.” — J.B.

“Coffee” ( O!RUL8,2? , 2013)

A remake of  Urban Zakapa ’s “Café Latte,” BTS reworked the 2009 song to fit their own distinct vibe. With smooth raps and rock strings spurring along the original jazz melody, “Coffee” is as equally crestfallen lyrically as the original but has a more playful tone that fits the youthful feel of the septet’s  Skool  era. —  T.H.

“Like” ( 2 Cool 4 Skool , 2013)

This song’s off-kilter concoction of twinkling keys and bleeped-out curses makes it dreamy and swaggy all at once. The cutesy tone of the song is amplified by clever and light-hearted lyricism about breaking up in the social media age. The sweet R&B groove was a welcome salve to the hard hip-hop posturing that dominated their rookie aesthetic. —  C.K.

“Hold Me Tight” ( The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, Pt. 1 , 2015)

Replete with all the classic break-up song motifs (melismatic ad-libs, a twinkling piano, and multiple uses of the words “heart” and “cry”), “Hold Me Tight” is the closest the boys come to treading “Cry Me a River” territory — but impassioned raps from J-Hope, RM, and Suga distinguish BTS from their angst-ridden forefathers in *NSYNC . — M.M.

“Intro: The Most Beautiful Moment in Life” ( The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, Pt. 1 , 2015)

Basketball acts as a microcosm of Suga’s life on this song. Vignettes on the court stand in for his bigger worries while samples of basketball squeaks line the beat. This solo track is well-placed as an intro because it’s immersive: the ambience of the court functions like scene-setting. After all, Suga’s stage name comes from “shooting guard.” —  C.K.

"My Universe" with Coldplay ( Music of the Spheres , 2021)

A moment of musical respect and admiration recognized on both sides, BTS teamed up with their long-admired idols Coldplay for “My Universe,” with both sides bringing their best to the bilingual hit. Co-produced by legendary pop maestro Max Martin, both bands sang and harmonized in English and Korean, showing the world a border-crossing success that flew straight to No. 1 on the Hot 100. — J.B.

“Fire” ( The Most Beautiful Moment In Life: Young Forever , 2016)

It doesn’t get more energetic than “Fire,” an explosive, funky electro-pop single that thrives on frenzied synths and whirring sirens as the seven  sing and rap  about setting the world’s expectations aflame: “Live as you like, it’s your life anyway/ Stop trying, it’s OK to lose.” As good as BTS are at evocative dance tracks, it’s bangers like “Fire” where their dynamism truly thrives. —  T.H.

“Boyz With Fun” ( The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, Pt. 1 , 2015)

“Boyz With Fun” lives up to its title. Silly songs are a staple of the septet’s multi-faceted repertoire — and this song stands out on sheer panache. The funky bass line animates playful sound effects, like J-Hope turning the word “fun” into a revved engine. This is BTS at their rowdiest, proving you can get outta your mind without being brainless. —  C.K.

“Danger” ( Dark & Wild , 2014)

BTS

The first single off of BTS’ first LP, this punchy, rock-influenced song has it all: vibrant electric strings, a powerful hip-hop beat, discordant synths and a touch of lovelorn sentimentality. Over the driving track, the members of BTS express anger and passion towards a lover who won’t give them the time of day. —  T.H.

 “Lost” ( Wings , 2016)

This sweeping synth-pop  Wings  track finds its way through a trap beat and soaring harmonies as the act’s vocalists — Jin, Jimin, V and Jung Kook — dramatically expound on philosophical lyrics, like “To lose your way/ Is the way to find that path.” With the lyrics expressing an optimistic outlook about making one’s own way in the world, “Lost” is immensely impactful both for its lyrics and its powerful melody. —  T.H.

“Boy in Luv” ( Skool Luv Affair , 2014)

Propulsive with its rock and hip-pop sound, “Boy In Luv” switched things up for BTS stylistically, shifting away from the aggressive tone and contentious themes of their first year’s releases in favor of an enthusiastic ode to young love. The group lives up to their boyish name with this single, in which they express their passion, and the anguish that accompanies it, for a girl who is teasing them. —  T.H.

"Mikrokosmos" ( Map of the Soul: Persona , 2019)

The fan-dedicated song that closed BTS’ Love Yourself: Speak Yourself world tour concerts, “Mikrokosmos,” combines the Greek word for “microcosm” with the Korean word that also doubles as its Korean title (“소우주”) for a cross-cultural exchange in honor of ARMY. The emotional synth-pop track harbors a beautiful message and includes a promise from BTS: “You got me…I got you.”  — J.B.

“Road” ( 2 Cool 4 Skool , 2013)

The road to success isn’t only paved with flowers. Before BTS became a big hit, they already displayed a remarkable propensity for self-examination as rookie idols. On this hidden track from their first EP, the members reflect on their struggles with chasing their dream. Hindsight bias can make their record-smashing seem fated — but “Road” offers a glimpse into a time when BTS’ future was uncertain. —  C.K.

“Stigma” ( Wings , 2016)

Are you calling V a sinner? His solo track is halfway between a jazz standard and R&B ballad, showcasing his attachment to antiquated sounds. The devil is in the details, and the complex interplay of restraint and intensity is offset by sparse piano and brass. V’s baritone vocals even manage to make a falsetto sound smoky. —  C.K.

“21st Century Girl” ( Wings , 2016)

BTS

A rare female-empowerment anthem sung by a group of men, “21st Century Girl” lets BTS speak their aspirational messages specifically to the women leading our future over some absolutely banging production — the horn samples on the chorus have a regal feel to them, particularly when a trap twist gets added at the end. All that, plus  hooks that are begging to be shouted and responded to (“All my ladies! Put your hands up!”). —  J.B.

“Rain” ( Dark & Wild , 2014)

Written in part by the rap-line, the lyrics to “Rain” detail gloomy slice-of-life scenes that are overcast with worries. The empty space between the clipped piano notes adds a jazzy flair to the hip-hop sample. “Rain” proves BTS are adept at painting moods with swatches of gray weather. —  C.K.

“Serendipity” ( Love Yourself: Her , 2017)

Her  opener “Serendipity” is an electronic R&B lullaby that speaks of a love fated to be: “Ever since the universe was first formed/ Everything has been planned.” The smooth, minimal arrangement hands over the reins to Jimin, whose sensuous, wispy voice is the ideal instrument for the gentle, celestial track. —  M.M.

"ON" ( Map of the Soul: 7 , 2020)

BTS delivered the debut TV performance of “ON” during a top-secret filming in New York City’s historic Grand Central Terminal for The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon . If that doesn’t speak to the epic grandeur the guys planned around this single, we’re not sure what will. With a military-like chant, “ON” delved into BTS’ rise to success, the highs and lows that come with it, and their dedication to pushing forward. They sing, “Can’t hold me down ’cause you know I’m a fighter,” and “ON” shows they were only about to fight harder toward global domination. — J.B.

“BTS Cypher Pt. 3: Killer” ( Dark & Wild , 2014)

BTS might be mainstream now, but they’re fond of revisiting their underground rap roots. Technically the fourth in their series of cyphers, “Killer” spotlights the rappers’ individual skills: Suga chops up the speed raps, J-Hope rides the beat and RM paints vivid imagery. Roaming charges be damned, “Killer” is the kind of cypher that’ll have ARMYs saying, “going ?? Hong Kong.” —  C.K .

“I Like It, Pt. 2” ( Wake Up , 2014)

BTS pressed the return button on “I Like It” in this Japanese sequel to the lovesick debut album track. The members take the concept in a direction reminiscent of West Coast hip hop thanks to the high-pitched portamento saw wave synths. After all, the track was released after the septet was mentored by G-funk master  Warren G . —  C.K.

“DNA” ( Love Yourself: Her , 2017)

BTS

Their first track to land on the Hot 100 — peaking at No. 67 last year — “DNA” offers up a vibrant soundscape that plays up the group’s hip-hop leanings while meshing them with EDM, with a whistling refrain and acoustic guitar loop thrown in for additional impact. It’s a forceful yet tender dance track with an earworm of a chorus, which fronted the group’s Stateside rise last year and led to “DNA” becoming one of BTS’ first songs to be  certified Gold  by the RIAA. —  T.H.

“Sea” ( Love Yourself: Her , 2017)

A hidden track that the most dedicated fans got to hear on the physical edition of  Love Yourself: Her , the soothing guitar juxtaposes the heartbreaking lyrics that, in retrospect, seem to be a slight hint to the future direction of the darker  Love Yourself: Tear  released eight months later. —  J.B.

“BTS Cypher 4” ( Wings , 2016)

BTS may be idols, but their bravado hasn’t been defanged. The refrain of BTS’ omnipresent motto “love yourself” is turned on its head here — and transformed from a kind-hearted encouragement to a snarky barb. The rap-line barks DGAFs at ya playa haters on this blockbuster showcase of the group’s rap skills. Despite a  snafu  with a recycled beat, Suga, RM and J-Hope prove here that they know how to take ownership of a verse. — C.K.

"Blue & Grey" ( BE , 2020)

Produced by member V and envisioned initially as his solo song, “Blue & Grey” was a beautiful addition to BTS’ 2020 album BE , with lyrics addressing anxiety and depression that spoke to the overall state of the world while navigating the COVID-19 pandemic. V’s raw bass tone perfectly opens the sparse R&B-pop production, with the entire group giving the track additional depth and impact when sung together. — J.B.

“Euphoria” ( Love Yourself: Answer , 2018)

How good is BTS’ music if a song teased in an album trailer won the hearts of millions even before it dropped in full? The light-yet-pummeling synth work blended with Jung Kook’s feathery vocals made this track an early fan-favorite when the “Euphoria : Theme of Love Yourself: Wonder” trailer video was released. The JK solo track was eventually released on Love Yourself: Answer . It also became a highlight on the LP’s accompanying tour when Jung Kook sang the soaring track above the crowd while being lifted into the air during its live performance. — J.B.

“Paradise” ( Love Yourself: Tear,  2018)

On the bouncing electronic pop of “Paradise,” BTS address fans running on the hamster wheels of school and work and assure them it’s okay to take a breather from the world’s endless demands. Produced by British musician  MNEK , it’s a sanguine, joy-filled affair, carried largely by its bright, snappy choruses, and an anthemic bilingual chant that encourages fans to walk their own paths: “Stop runnin’ for nothin’ my friend/ You don’t need to have a dream that everyone else has.” —  M.M.

“Outro: House of Cards” ( The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, Pt. 2 , 2015)

“Outro: House of Cards” is nothing short of cinematic, with its sweeping string-filled arrangement, overt metaphors for a failed love, layered harmonies, and drawn-out ad-libs. The interplay between the vocalists’ tones as they all tell parts of the tale is central to the song’s allure. From Jung Kook’s smooth, flexible voice to the airier tone V takes on, the contrasts and constant shifts give the song an added dose of drama — not that the song was ever short on that. —  M.M.

“Begin” ( Wings , 2016)

For his  Wings  solo track, Jung Kook details his transformation from a wide-eyed, green trainee to one of the industry’s top idols, focusing on the six BTS members who guided him all the while. While the production is sleek — its chorus borrows from Purpose-era Bieber EDM with its shift into a barrage of sounds — it’s the story it tells that sets the track apart. Penned in part by RM, the lyrics are an earnest open letter that, in a rare display for any boyband, explores and centers the group’s brotherhood. —  M.M.

“Airplane, Pt. 2” ( Love Yourself: Tear , 2018)

An extension of J-Hope’s solo mixtape track “Airplane,” the members go on a lyrical world tour here while still remembering their roots and the dreams that made them international sensations. The Latin-pop vibe of the track only enhances its global feel, which appropriately comes in part from the teams behind genre-breaking hits like  Camila Cabello ‘s “Havana” and  Luis Fonsi ‘s “Despacito.” —  J.B.

“Baepsae (Silver Spoon)” ( The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, Pt. 2 , 2015)

Much has been said about the social commentary BTS have laced their discography with, and this swaggering diss track is  full of that . Named after the Korean slang for “try-hard,” its boisterous bassline and gritty production — especially blaring horns and haunting pipes — accentuates the group’s sass, as they sarcastically address the current generation’s lack of career stability. A song that reflects the lives of people not only in Korea but also around the world, “Baepsae” is one of BTS’ most impactful songs. —  T.H.

 “134340” ( Love Yourself: Tear , 2018)

If you do enough genre-hopping, you’ll eventually stake out new sonic territory. The title “134340” refers to  Pluto’s 2006 demotion  from planetary status — an extended metaphor used to explore separation from a loved one. The song’s experimentalism is out of this world, but its solar flair is grounded by the earthiness of the instrumentation. How many Top 40 acts can ride a beat led by a flute? It may take the titular former planet 248 years to revolve around the sun, but this song is on heavy rotation. —  C.K.

“Dope” ( The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, Pt. 1 , 2015)

“Dope” gifts listeners with a buttoned-up subversion of hip-hop braggadocio: BTS aren’t “playing in the club” because they’re too busy building an empire off their hard work. And they aren’t wrong. The song recruited countless new ARMYs with the jaw-dropping choreography of their one-take  music video . Hinged on the catchiness of a nasally saxophone riff, “Dope” is the kind of jam that requires such fancy footwork. —  C.K.

“Best of Me” ( Love Yourself: Her , 2017)

K-pop fans are notoriously wary of popular Western acts teaming up with their favorites, since history has delivered awkward collaborations, which fans would rather pretend never happened altogether. Not the case when BTS and Andrew Taggart of  The Chainsmokers  linked up, bringing the latter’s accessible, ubiquitous bouncy dance sound with BTS’ dynamic harmonies and raps. Some fans still call this B-side BTS’ radio smash that got away. —  J.B.

"Run BTS" ( Proof , 2022)

BTS used the 2022 anthology album Proof to showcase their entire career together, and the new songs released alongside the project also successfully did that. While “Yet to Come” and “For Youth” reflected BTS’ more mature perspective, “Run BTS” was a throwback to their early underdog days. With a more hip-hop and sample-focused production, “Run BTS” was a treat for longtime fans and became a fast favorite for ARMY — it even spurred a dance trend across TikTok. — J.B.

"Boy With Luv" with Halsey ( Map of the Soul: Persona , 2019)

A consistent thread throughout BTS’ most successful collaborators is working with artists they genuinely admire and call friends. Years after their first meeting, the boys teamed with musical pal Halsey for the airy, funk-tinged K-pop single “Boy With Luv,” which marked a lighter and softer side to both artists. “Boy With Luv” was particularly special for longtime ARMY members as a matured parallel to BTS’ 2014 single “Boy in Luv,” finding happiness in life’s smaller things and moments. — J.B.

"Idol" ( Love Yourself: Answer , 2018)

A stadium-sized anthem, “Idol” tipped to the lofty peaks BTS wanted to reach. The group refuses to define themselves by industry standards (“You can call me artist/ You can call me idol…/ I don’t care”) and has the vision to bring South Korea’s music to a global audience with the production blending elements of traditional Korean instruments with South African house music. An additional remix version with Nicki Minaj proved their ambition was growing bigger by the day. — J.B.

 “Interlude: Wings” ( Wings , 2016)

An album closer that seems like anything but, “Wings” ends the eponymous album in an uplifting way, dropping a clap-driven track that would fit right in at any club around the world. Starting off evocatively with graceful strings and Jung Kook’s echoing opening line, a sudden shift transforms this “Interlude” into a party song laced with the group’s optimistic raps and earworm of a chorus, all of which express how they’ve metaphorically taken flight and reached great heights supported by their “Wings,” a nod to both their own strengths as well as the support from ARMY.  —  T.H.

"Dynamite" ( BE , 2020)

Released during the pandemic, the uplifting melodies in “Dynamite” delivered exactly what the world needed on BTS’ irresistible English-language track. The single made Billboard chart history as BTS’ first No. 1 on the Hot 100 from a South Korean group and became a source of comfort during an uncertain time in world history. — J.B.

“Whalien 52” ( The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, Pt. 2 , 2015)

“Whalien 52” contains one of the septet’s richest displays of storytelling. The title is a portmanteau of “alien” and “52-hertz whale” — in reference to the isolation experienced by a  peculiar whale  whose call is too high-pitched to be heard by its kind. The mournful cries of the surrounding chopped and pitched-up vocals evoke the whale’s call. Meanwhile, the lyrics map the members’ personal struggles onto the metaphor of the “most lonely creature in the world” in an uncommonly candid way. —  C.K.

“Fake Love” ( Love Yourself: Tear , 2018)

BTS

You could say “Fake Love”  outsold  — somewhat literally, as it broke records by hitting No. 10 on the Hot 100. This is BTS at their angstiest, wallowing in the heartache of changing yourself so much for someone that your love is fake. The lyrics make complex ideas bite-size: “In this dream that won’t ever come true/ I grew a flower that couldn’t be blossomed.” The septet put their own spin on emo hip-hop with reverb-shellacked guitars creeping in the background amid trap elements, like ever-twitching triple hi-hats. It’s 2018, which means a K-pop group has a more guitar-centric single than most entries on the rock charts. — C.K.

“Spring Day” ( You Never Walk Alone , 2017)

BTS

Absence makes the heart grow more complicated. “Spring Day” packs an emotional wallop as the lyrics hover in the bargaining stage of coping with the absence of a loved one. “I say that I’m gonna erase you,” Jimin sings. “But actually, I still can’t let you go.” (Fan theories abound, but RM didn’t deny a  rumor  that the lyrics are about the  Sewol Ferry tragedy .) In this perpetual winter, the miasma of whirring synths contrasts with introspective vocal deliveries that are half-spoken. This artistry paid off on the charts: “Spring Day” foreshadowed BTS’s Hot 100 run when it hit No. 15 on the  Bubbling Under Hot 100 . —  C.K.

“Dimple (Illegal)” ( Love Yourself: Her , 2017)

Ephemeral future bass takes center stage on this B-side from last year’s  Her , which features Jin, Jimin, V and Jung Kook singing about an “illegirl” whose charming facial feature should be illegal. The four smoothly deliver up some of their finest performances on this sultry, wordplay-driven love song — especially during the airy post-chorus bridge that shifts the melody away from its plinking beat and sleek synths to focus on the vocalists building off one another to take the track to a soaring climax. Between that and the descending repetition of the hypnotic refrain, “That dimple is illegal,” “Dimple” is one of the brightest moments of BTS’s discography. —  T.H.

“Not Today” ( You Never Walk Alone , 2017)

BTS

Only a week after the release of the emotive pop rock of “Spring Day,” the synth-heavy anthem “Not Today” broke through like a rocket jet through dense fog. The track doesn’t stray too far from the aggro-pop formula perfected in “Dope” and “Fire”: relatively inconspicuous verses, a bombastic chorus, and a vocal-centric pre-chorus hinting at something grander. Only this time around, they crank the chorus up to a 12, its ominous, klaxon-like sound demanding your attention. Complete with a pro-underdog message that pushes the listener to defy their limitations, it’s equal parts social commentary and floor-shaking thrills. —  M.M.

“Pied Piper” ( Love Yourself: Her , 2017)

Despite the  push-pull of its lyrics  and its darker-than-average references (the Biblical tale of the Garden of Eden, the  Pied Piper of Hamelin  who literally lured children away from their homes), “Pied Piper” is mellow funk-pop at its best. BTS synthesize — pun wholly intended — their influences (the ’80s talk box via “24K Magic,”  Daft Punk ’s work with  The Weeknd ,  Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 1 ) into a funky track that would feel at home on any Spotify summer playlist. The balance between organic bass and drum instrumentation and digitized sounds highlights the sheer sophistication of BTS’ recent productions, and makes “Pied Piper” the coolest-sounding cautionary tale around. —  M.M.

“Butterfly” ( The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, Pt. 2 , 2015)

2015 was a key year in defining BTS’ sound and the sentimental punch they packed with every track. “Butterfly” is a representative track, with its evolution from an acoustic-leaning pop track to industrial-strength synthesizers backing the boys. The lyrics in “Butterfly” are some of BTS’ most complex, relating the fear of losing something — time, a lover, a memory — to a butterfly that can also get scared and quickly fly away. Incorporating these elaborate-yet-universally understood symbols has been a cornerstone of BTS’ work and why their music deserves more of a deeper exploration than a casual listen. —  J.B.

“Save Me” ( The Most Beautiful Moment In Life: Young Forever , 2016)

BTS

The final single released as part of BTS’ career-changing  The Most Beautiful Moment In Life  trilogy, “Save Me” solidified the group’s dedication to an emotive brand of music that blends popular electronica trends with their hip-hop leanings. There’s an overwhelming sense of despair and anxiety that permeates this expressive  Young Forever  track, but its incongruous nature keeps it from ever becoming awash in total melancholy. After taking off with spry synths, a tick-tocking beat and Jimin’s forlorn opening verse, the song subtly builds toward its sweeping, trop house climax. And then the beat picks up mid-verse to lead into the frenetic chorus, which in turn descends into an anguished rap section. It’s powerfully subtle, and one of the group’s most ambitious productions to date. —  T.H.

“Run” ( The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, Pt. 2 , 2015)

BTS

It’s hard to talk about “Run” without mentioning “I Need U,” BTS’ breakthrough track that saw the members explore new sonic territory and garnered them wide domestic success. The two singles are intricately threaded together, with their music videos telling complementary parts of a larger lore and their sounds branching off from the same synthy pop trends. But where “I Need U” is smooth and lush, “Run” is as tumultuous as a finely tuned pop song can get. There’s the sense of desperation, best heard in the tense fray of Jimin’s voice as he sings, “Pitiful destiny/ Point your finger at me.” There’s the feverish energy of the titular verb, which repeats throughout the track’s propulsive, urgent chorus. There’s the ache that blankets the song, boiled down into the words “cry,” “bye,” and “lie.” Underneath the song’s undeniably catchy exterior lies an embrace of the painful foolishness of love. —  M.M.

"Black Swan" ( Map of the Soul: 7 , 2020)

The introduction to Map of the Soul: 7 , BTS’ biggest album to date, began with “Black Swan,” which brought some of the band’s most personal, honest fears and reflections straight into the spotlight. “Black Swan” discusses an artist’s concern over losing their passion for music with the members’ deliveries sounding like an internal battle of whether to continue pursuing their passion. Map of the Soul: 7 was released as BTS was approaching their seventh anniversary, which is typically the standard length of initial contracts for K-pop groups before deciding to renew or disband, and “Black Swan” gave insight the group mindset and the overall relationship musicians have toward their craft. Blending a modern-day emo hip-hop sound with South Korea’s traditional string instrument in the gayageum gave the song all the more of a personal feeling. Luckily, BTS had no intention of leaving their craft but instead continued to use it to share their more serious anxieties with the world in hopes to create a more empathetic and understanding tomorrow. — J.B.

“I Need U” ( The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, Pt. 1 , 2015)

BTS

The story goes that “I Need U” was the turning point in BTS’s upward trajectory: The song first snagged the septet their long-coveted first-place trophies on  Korean music shows . On an aesthetic level, they committed to branching out of the brash old-school hip hop sound of their rookie days. This song was the beginning of a sonic metamorphosis that achieved a rare trick in the music industry: BTS didn’t need to trade their artistic integrity for an increase in accessibility. Rather, “I Need U” was their most ambitious comeback at this point in their career, melding world-building art direction, gorgeous contemporary dance and an emotionally charged dance track. Synths wind up like a music box while walls of hi-hats flank the choruses. Meanwhile, their softer brand of R&B provides a sturdier backdrop for the overwrought lyrics about a breakup. This comeback expanded the possibilities of what BTS could do as a group — before they eventually expanded the possibilities of what K-pop can do on the world stage. —  C.K.

“Blood Sweat & Tears” ( Wings , 2016)

BTS

By the time BTS’ 2016 album Wings was released, BTS were on the cusp of becoming the K-pop act commanding the world’s attention, and having a monumental album led by a song like “Blood Sweat & Tears” solidified their place as true competitors in the global music arena. The track utilizes music trends of the moment like tropical moombahton, snappy trap and breathy vocal approaches, but never does it feel like it loses a touch of who BTS are as artists. The raps, the vocal deliveries and the visuals all feel specific and important to their developing story, while still being wholly accessible to audiences around the globe. Being able to take what is happening in the world at large, and reshaping it to who you are, is one of the most impressive and important markers for an artist. BTS do just that with “Blood, Sweat & Tears,” and only continue to push their art deeper into the global music scene. — J.B.
