Buffalo

Where to see Buffalo in Zimbabwe

One of the celebrated so-called Big Five, the buffalo’s fearsome reputation derives largely from hunters’ tales. Visitors will usually find this big, sociable bovid to be a largely placid animal – although courageous in defence against predators.

About image

Quick facts about Buffalo

The African or Cape buffalo is Africa’s only wild cattle species and should not be confused with the domestic water buffalo. The subspecies inhabiting southern and eastern Africa (S.c. caffer) is the larger of two, the other being the smaller, reddish forest buffalo of west and central Africa (S.c. nanus). Males are imposing beasts: larger than females, their curved horns meet at the base in a bony shield, called a boss. Buffalos are bulk grazers and must drink daily. Their social structures are matriarchal, and herds may coalesce in huge gatherings of more than 1,000. Older males form smaller, separate groups. Lions are a constant threat, but buffalo herds co-operate to repel the big cats – sometimes even killing them.

Where to see buffalo in Africa

Buffalo require a combination of thick bush for cover and open grasslands for grazing. They are reasonably common in most large parks and reserves across east and southern Africa, except for in the drier south-west parts of the continent.

Top tips for viewing buffalo

A large herd of buffalos on the move, filling the air with dust, is one of the more impressive sights of the bush. During the rainy season, herds move constantly in search of fresh grazing and may quickly disappear, leaving only the evidence of their passing – the trampled ground splattered with droppings. During the dry season, herds throng to waterholes, wading in deep and jostling for position. Parks with impressive buffalo populations include Tsavo East and West (Kenya), Serengeti , Ruaha and Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous) (Tanzania), Luangwa (Zambia), Hwange (Zimbabwe) and Chobe and Moremi Moremi (Botswana). Lions often tail buffalos, so remaining in a herd’s vicinity may produce some action. Old bulls tend to hang out around wallows and waterholes. Vulnerable to lion attack, and thus edgy and aggressive, these individuals require a wide berth when you’re on foot.

Cape Buffalo Hunting Package @ $12500 - Hunting Areas & Safari Lodges

We offer Cape buffalo hunts of superior quality in large privately owned nature reserves across South Africa. We work hard at obtaining and maintaining several superior areas across the different regions in South Africa so that each buffalo hunter in a particular season has an opportunity to take a top-class Buffalo.

Hunting areas in the Limpopo Province, hunting in the Free State, hunting near Kruger National Park, hunting in Zimbabwe

Drom, and his dedicated staff of five full time Professional Hunters operate on eleven exclusive hunting concessions within the nine provinces of South Africa and in Zimbabwe for the hunting of dangerous game. In each camp you will be transported to another time and treated as royalty in luxurious comfort. From beginning to end all your needs are attended to in careful and attentive fashion. Each area is uniquely different from the other in topography and vegetation, thus different species are more prevalent in certain parts of the country. We constantly strive to acquire new concessions to continue to ensure the top trophy quality we have achieved the past 10 years. We manage our areas well by not over hunting them and resting them rotationally. We have a good relationship with the landowners in our areas and can hunt on several other properties around our land and concessions if we need to. We always go the extra mile to make sure our hunters get the trophies they are looking for.

Hunt with Jannie Meyer

If you'd like to know more:, about buffalo trails.

Buffalo Trails Safaris was founded in 2005 by Jannie Meyer. Jannie grew up on Eaglemont Ranch in the Lowveld of Zimbabwe, where his father J P S Meyer operated hunting safaris. Whenever the opportunity arose, Jannie eagerly accompanied his father on hunts and as a result, some of our clients today still remember Jannie as a young boy.

After gaining his full Professional Hunters License in 2003 and working with his father for a few years, Jannie wanted to carve his own identity within the industry. He decided to go it alone, and in 2005 Buffalo Trails Safaris began operating.

Buffalo Trails Safaris is passionate about hunting, conservation and creating memories of a lifetime for all of their clients. In such a competitive environment it continues to go from strength to strength through the commitment of its team to ethical hunting and the loyalty of previous clients who return time after time.

We specialize in high quality hunts in some of the best hunting areas of Zimbabwe – notably Gonarezhou, which is world renowned for the quality of its trophy elephant bulls, and the Nyakasanga Concession which is regarded as one of the premier hunting areas in Zimbabwe.

We pride ourselves on being a small, exclusive operation where client safety and satisfaction are of the utmost importance. Our vehicles and equipment are of the highest possible standards and are maintained meticulously.

Every client is an individual and we strive to tailor-make every safari to suit the individual’s wants, needs and capabilities.

“If there were one more thing I could do, it would be to go on safari once again.” ~  Karen Blixen  ~

Mattanja Hunting Safaris

HUNTING BUFFALO IN SOUTH AFRICA & ZIMBABWE WITH MATTANJA HUNTING SAFARIS

Hunting Cape Buffalo is probably on every clients' bucket list and is the most popular of Africa's Big 5 today. Buffalo hunting is an adrenaline filled hunt, and although they look pretty docile when undisturbed, a wounded Buffalo can be aggressive and is one of the most dangerous animals! Buffalo weigh on average around 1 500 pounds with bulls being bigger than cows. Both bulls and cows have horns with bulls having a spectacular set of horns with a rock solid boss on the old targeted bulls where cows lack the boss on the head.

My preferred method of hunting buffalo is the old school way of finding fresh tracks of a group of solitary bulls and tracking from there on foot. Buffalo can cover some distance but normally bed down during the heat of the day and has to drink water every day.

The .375 H&H Magnum is the legal minimum required caliber for hunting Buffalo in both South Africa and Zimbabwe. A .375 with a quality bullet and a well placed shot will be more than efficient.  A premium soft nose bullet or a monolithic bullet of 300 grains or heavier is highly recommended! My recommendation for a premium soft nose bullet is Swift A-Frame and a monolithic bullet Barnes TSX. If you prefer to shoot soft nose bullets like a Swift having solids with you can come handy if follow up shots are required. Shot distance is about 50 yards or less on average, depending on the area and circumstances, a good quality, low variable scope on your rifle can be a lot of help. You're Professional Hunter will go over shot placement with you,  but studying shot placement before you're Safari can be an advantage!

Buffalo Hunting in South Africa can be done on private game ranches, which is fenced, or in the Private Game Reserves(APNR) adjacent to the Kruger National Park, which is free range. Some clients underestimate a fenced buffalo hunt, but in my experience it can be just as challenging as a free range hunt. My preference is to hunt self sustaining Buffalo on ranches of 12 500 Acres or bigger. Both the Limpopo Valley and the Lowveld offer exceptional Buffalo trophies and Buffalo hunts and I will almost always target age over size, unless the client specifies a specific size bull. Buffalo Hunting is South Africa is good year round although the best time is from May to October.

Buffalo Hunting in Zimbabwe is for the most part completely free range hunts. My preferred areas in Zimbabwe for Buffalo is Matetsi and Nuanetsi, depending on the time of the year. Both areas offer top quality bulls, some of the best in Zimbabwe and are massive in size! In Matetsi, seeing Buffalo herds of 500 plus Buffalo is not uncommon! Time of the year is important for a successful Buffalo Hunt! On Nuanetsi Buffalo Hunting is good and successful year round, although from May onwards to November is recommended. In Matetsi from June is a good time for Buffalo and the best time is late season, during the dry period, October / November.

Travel options to get to the hunting concession in South Africa would be to fly to OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg and take a connecting flight to Polokwane Airport or Eastgate Airport depending where you're hunting Safari is.

Travel options to get to the hunting concession in Zimbabwe   w ould be to fly to OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg , South Africa  and take a connecting flight to Victoria Falls International Airport  or Bulawayo Airport depending where you're hunting Safari is.

On every Safari you will be greeted at the airport by myself, or one of my handpicked Professional Hunters. If you require overnight accommodation in Johannesburg, I highly recommend Africa Sky Guesthouse.
