Theme Nights On Cruise Ships (Everything You Need to Know) – Examples

What is a themed night.

A themed night on a cruise ship where guests and staff dress up with a specific theme in mind.

Colour-themed nights are very popular – particularly White Night, which is held on many different cruise lines.

How Do You Find Out In Advance What The Theme Will Be?

Cruise theme nights are included in your cruise fare, but you need to check online to find out what the theme on your cruise might be, so you can pack accordingly.

You can normally find out in advance which themed nights might be held by logging into your online cruise account.

You could join a Facebook “Roll Call” which is a Facebook group specifically for the sailing you are taking. Others already in the group may be able to advise you.

If in doubt – guess! White night parties are very common, followed by 80s and 70s parties. Pack something that you could wear that would fit the theme, just in case!

Here Is What Some Of The Cruise Lines Suggest

Black and White Night, 50’s/60’s/70’s/80’s, Country Western, Masquerade Ball, Toga Parties. These are examples and are subject to change. Royal Caribbean
Every MSC cruise offers themed nights on board, including White Parties, Elegant Nights, Flower Party and more!  Guests are encouraged to bring outfits that go with each of the themed nights. MSC
Gala Evenings follow one of four themes – either Black and White, Red and Gold, Masquerade or Roaring 20s. You’ll find many nods to these themes in the way your ship is decorated, the musical acts performing throughout the night, and in the signature cocktails and dishes available that evening in our bars and restaurants. It Sounds Like Disney May Have Had Problems With Themed Nights In The Past…

During themed cruises and onboard celebrations like Pirate Night, Guests are invited to dress in costume. We value safety and good judgment and ask Guests to choose costumes that are family friendly, not obstructive, objectionable, offensive or violent. To avoid any disappointment or delay in the boarding process, please refrain from bringing toys or props that resemble guns, knives or other related implements. Disney Cruise Line

Do You Have To Get Involved In Themed Night Parties?

Not at all, joining in is completely voluntary. If dressing up isn’t your thing, there is no need to do it!

Can I Hire Themed Clothing Onboard?

The only cruise line that advertises clothing hire is Cunard.

Gentlemen can hire tuxedos including shirts, trousers and dinner jackets on board from the shops – these are to wear on their “Gala Nights,” not themed nights as such.

Tuxedo packages range from $90 for one night up to $250 for 5 nights.

They don’t hire any sort of clothing hire for ladies, suggesting instead that they buy something from one of the onboard shops.

I took a cruise on the last Ocean Liner, Cunards Queen Mary 2. Cunard has very strict dress codes. Find out what I thought of that here:

Understanding the Concept of Cruise Ship Themed Nights

Cruise ship themed nights are special events that take place during a cruise where passengers are encouraged to dress up or participate in activities that align with a specific theme. These themed nights can range from formal dress codes to costume parties or celebrations centered around a specific country or era. The goal of these themed nights is to create a fun and immersive atmosphere for passengers to enjoy.

Themed nights on a cruise ship are important because they offer a unique opportunity for passengers to engage in a different experience and add some excitement to their vacation. These events allow passengers to get creative and step out of their comfort zone by dressing up or participating in themed activities. Themed nights also create a sense of camaraderie among passengers as they come together to celebrate a common theme. It’s a chance for passengers to connect, socialize, and create lasting memories.

How to prepare for themed nights

Preparing for themed nights on a cruise ship requires a little bit of planning and creativity. The first step is to research the scheduled themed nights for your specific cruise. This information can typically be found on the cruise line’s website or through your travel agent. Once you know the themes for each night, you can start planning your outfits and accessories.

When packing for a cruise, it’s important to include items that can be used for themed nights. For example, formal nights may require a cocktail dress or a suit and tie. Costume or dress-up nights may call for outfits that reflect a specific theme, such as a pirate costume or a 1920s-inspired ensemble. Country-specific nights may require clothing that represents the culture of the country being celebrated.

If you don’t have appropriate outfits or accessories for themed nights, don’t worry! Many cruises have onboard shops where you can find costumes or themed clothing for purchase. You can also get creative and make your own outfits using items you already have or by visiting local thrift stores before your cruise.

Popular Types of Cruise Ship Themed Nights

Cruise ship themed nights come in various forms, each offering a unique and exciting experience for passengers. Here are some popular types of themed nights you might encounter on a cruise:

Formal nights

Formal nights are the epitome of elegance on a cruise ship. Passengers are encouraged to dress in their finest attire, such as evening gowns, tuxedos, or formal suits. These nights often include special dinners, live music, and dancing, creating a sophisticated and glamorous atmosphere.

Costume or dress-up nights

Costume or dress-up nights are a chance for passengers to get creative and embrace their inner child. These nights may have specific themes like “pirate night” or “superhero night,” and passengers are encouraged to dress up accordingly. It’s a fun and playful way to add some excitement and whimsy to the cruise experience.

Country-specific nights

Country-specific nights allow passengers to immerse themselves in the culture of a particular country. These nights often feature themed decorations, music, and cuisine from the chosen country. Passengers can dress up in traditional clothing or colors associated with the country to fully embrace the experience.

Retro nights

Retro nights take passengers back in time to celebrate a specific era or decade. Whether it’s the 50s, 60s, or 80s, retro nights are an opportunity to dress up in vintage clothing and dance to the music of a bygone era. It’s a nostalgic and fun-filled night that appeals to passengers of all ages.

Tropical nights

Tropical nights are all about embracing the vibrant and laid-back atmosphere of a beach vacation. Passengers can wear Hawaiian shirts, floral dresses, or even don grass skirts. The Ultimate Guide To Cruise Ship Themed Nights

Planning and Packing for Cruise Ship Themed Nights

To make the most of cruise ship themed nights, it’s important to plan ahead and pack accordingly. Here are some tips to help you prepare:

Researching the scheduled themed nights

Before your cruise, research the scheduled themed nights so you know what to expect and can plan your outfits accordingly. Check the cruise line’s website or reach out to your travel agent for more information. Knowing the themes in advance will give you time to prepare and ensure you have the appropriate clothing and accessories.

Packing tips for themed nights

When packing for themed nights, consider the specific requirements for each theme. For formal nights, pack an elegant cocktail dress or a suit and tie. For costume or dress-up nights, bring outfits and accessories that align with the theme. If you’re unsure about the dress code for a specific themed night, it’s always better to be slightly overdressed than underdressed.

Finding outfits and props on the cruise

If you don’t have appropriate outfits or accessories for themed nights, don’t fret. Most cruises have onboard shops where you can find costumes or themed clothing for purchase. These shops often offer a variety of options to suit different themes and budgets. Additionally, you can get creative and make your own outfits using items you already have or by visiting local thrift stores before your cruise.

Opting Out of Cruise Ship Themed Nights

While cruise ship themed nights can be a lot of fun, some passengers may choose to opt out for various reasons. Here’s why some passengers choose not to participate, as well as alternative activities for those who prefer not to dress up:

Why some passengers opt out

There can be several reasons why passengers choose not to participate in themed nights. Some passengers may find dressing up uncomfortable or prefer to relax and unwind without the pressure of dressing in a specific theme. Others may simply not be interested in participating and prefer to enjoy other onboard activities.

Alternative activities

If you opt out of themed nights, there are still plenty of activities to enjoy on a cruise ship. Take advantage of onboard amenities such as spa treatments, fitness classes, or live entertainment shows. Participate in themed activities that don’t require dressing up, like trivia nights or cooking demonstrations. You can also explore the various dining options or spend time relaxing by the pool.

Staying involved without dressing up

If you still want to be involved in the themed night atmosphere without dressing up, consider observing and enjoying the festivities from the sidelines. Many passengers enjoy watching others dress up and participate in themed nights without feeling the need to join in themselves. You can still soak up the energy and enjoyment of the themed nights without actively participating.

The Ultimate Guide To Cruise Ship Themed Nights

Food and Beverage on Cruise Ship Themed Nights

Themed nights on a cruise ship often extend to the food and beverage offerings, adding an extra element of excitement to the dining experience. Here’s what you can expect when it comes to food and beverage on themed nights:

Themed menus

On themed nights, cruise ships often offer special menus that align with the theme of the night. For example, on a tropical-themed night, you might find dishes featuring fresh seafood or exotic fruits. On country-specific nights, you can expect cuisine inspired by the culture and flavors of the chosen country.

Specialty beverages

To complement the themed menus, cruise ships often create specialty beverages that tie in with the theme of the night. From fruity tropical cocktails to themed mocktails for non-alcoholic options, there’s a wide range of beverages to choose from. These specialty drinks can add an extra touch of fun and flavor to your themed night experience.

Food and drink etiquette

When dining on a cruise ship themed night, it’s important to observe the appropriate etiquette. Follow the dress code guidelines for each themed night to ensure you are dressed appropriately for the dining venue. Be mindful of other passengers and respect their dining experience. If there are specific dining activities or rituals associated with the themed night, be sure to participate and enjoy the unique experience.

Participation Benefits of Cruise Ship Themed Nights

Participating in cruise ship themed nights offers several benefits that contribute to an enhanced cruise experience. Here are some reasons why joining in on the fun is worth considering:

Socializing opportunities

Themed nights provide a great opportunity to meet and socialize with other passengers. When everyone is dressed up and participating in the same theme, it creates a sense of camaraderie and opens doors for conversation. You can connect with fellow cruisers who share similar interests and enjoy the shared experience of the themed night together.

Enhanced cruise experience

Themed nights add an extra layer of excitement and entertainment to the cruise experience. They create a festive and immersive atmosphere that can make your vacation feel even more special. Whether it’s dancing the night away at a 70s-themed party or enjoying a formal dinner in your finest attire, participating in themed nights can elevate your overall cruise experience.

Chance to win prizes

Some cruise lines provide opportunities to win prizes during themed nights. From costume contests to trivia competitions, themed nights can be a fun way to test your creativity and knowledge while having a chance to win exciting prizes. Be sure to participate in any activities or competitions that might be happening on your themed night for a chance to take home a memorable souvenir.

Creating Lasting Memories with Cruise Ship Themed Nights

Participating in cruise ship themed nights offers a chance to create lasting memories. Here’s how you can make the most of these special nights:

Photo opportunities and services

Themed nights provide excellent photo opportunities to capture the fun and excitement of the evening. Take advantage of onboard photography services and designated photo areas to create memorable snapshots. Some cruise lines even offer themed photo packages, allowing you to take home professionally taken photos that perfectly encapsulate your themed night experience.

Unique experiences and stories

By fully engaging in themed nights, you create unique experiences and stories to share with friends and family. Embrace the opportunity to dress up and step into a different world, whether it’s as a swashbuckling pirate or a glamorous movie star. These experiences can become cherished memories that you’ll look back on fondly for years to come.

Creating fun and adventure

Themed nights are all about fun and adventure, so don’t be afraid to fully immerse yourself in the experience. Dance, laugh, and let loose with fellow passengers as you celebrate the chosen theme. Take part in any themed activities or games that are offered, and make the most of the lively atmosphere. Themed nights are designed to create an unforgettable experience, so embrace the opportunity to have a great time.

Handling Potential Challenges on Cruise Ship Themed Nights

While cruise ship themed nights are generally enjoyable, there can be some challenges that arise. Here are a few strategies for handling potential challenges:

Dealing with discomfort or anxiety

If you feel uncomfortable or anxious about participating in themed nights, remember that it’s okay to opt out. These nights are meant to be fun, and the most important thing is that you feel comfortable and enjoy yourself. You can still have a great time on a themed night by observing and enjoying the atmosphere from the sidelines.

Addressing costume malfunctions

If you’re participating in a costume or dress-up night and experience a costume malfunction, don’t panic. Pack a small emergency kit with safety pins, double-sided tape, or any other items that might come in handy for minor wardrobe malfunctions. If the issue is more significant, consider visiting the ship’s concierge or onboard shops for assistance.

Managing crowd and noise levels

Themed nights can be lively and energetic, which may not be everyone’s cup of tea. If you find the crowd or noise levels overwhelming, look for quieter areas on the ship where you can relax and still enjoy the experience. Many cruise ships offer multiple venues and spaces, so you can always find a more relaxed setting if needed.

Maximizing the Experience of Cruise Ship Themed Nights

To make the most of cruise ship themed nights, here are some tips for maximizing your experience:

Joining the pre-night parties

Many cruise lines host pre-night parties to get passengers excited and prepared for themed nights. These parties are a great way to meet other passengers who share a similar interest in the theme and build excitement for the upcoming event. Attend these parties to connect with fellow cruisers and start the themed night off on a high note.

Making advance dining reservations

If you plan to dine in specialty restaurants or attend special dinners on themed nights, it’s a good idea to make advance dining reservations. Themed nights can be popular, and availability in dining venues can fill up quickly. Making reservations ahead of time ensures you secure your spot and can fully enjoy the themed dining experience.

Taking part in themed activities or games

Themed nights often include various activities and games that passengers can participate in. Take advantage of these opportunities to interact with others and have some fun. Whether it’s a dance competition, a trivia night, or a scavenger hunt, getting involved in the themed activities will enhance your overall experience and help you create even more lasting memories.

By following these tips, you can fully immerse yourself in the cruise ship themed nights and create an unforgettable vacation experience.

Cruise ship themed nights offer a unique and exciting way to enhance your vacation experience. From formal nights to costume parties, these themed events provide an opportunity to dress up, socialize, and create lasting memories. By planning ahead, packing appropriate attire, and embracing the fun atmosphere, you can make the most of cruise ship themed nights. The Best Cruise Ship Theme Parties and Where to Find Them

Cruise ship deck party

Carnival Cruises:

  • Carnival Cruises is known for its signature 80s Rock'n'Glow Deck Party.
  • They also have a Caribbean-themed party known as a Mega Deck Party on longer itineraries.
  • White Hot Parties are also held on some itineraries where everyone wears white.
  • The ships Vista and Horizon are said to have a Latin dance party known as Amor Cubano.
  • Carnival also has a formal night. It has been a while since I have been on one of “The Fun Ships”, but I seem to remember them being a bit stricter about the dress code than a lot of their competitor cruise lines. Guests who were not dressed more formally on elegant nights would be denied seating in the main dining rooms and forced to eat at the buffet. Cruises six days or longer usually have two Cruise Elegant evenings.

Celebrity Cruises

  • A '60s party,
  • a Motown party,
  • a Latin party called Sizzle,
  • a rock masquerade entitled Masque,
  • And a silent disco. (They seem to be the only cruise line that does this, which is quite surprising considering the noise complaints we used to get on party nights when I worked in the guest services department of one of their competitors.)
  • White Hot Parties are also held on some itineraries where everyone wears white.
  • Their formal night has been rebranded as “evening chic” which is supposed to be less formal than formal, but smarter than smart casual.

Costa Cruises

  • Costa cruises are also said to have a white night and a 70s party.
  • Some itineraries also feature a black & red night and a masquerade party.

Disney Cruise Line

  • Disney Cruise Line is known for its Pirates of the Caribbean Deck Party complete with a fireworks display. (And let me tell you, pyrotechnics on a cruise ship with loads of kids on board? That sounds like a logistical and safety nightmare! ...But also, probably a lot of fun.)
  • The Disney Wonder is also said to have a Pixar Pals Party,  while the Disney Wonder and Disney Magic have a Frozen Party.
  • Each cruise also has an optional “Dress-up night” (where you are encouraged to dress in formal attire, not pirate attire - just to clarify what they mean by “dressing up”).

MSC Cruises

  • White parties are also common on MSC cruises.
  • Other theme parties include a Tropical Party,  a Flower Glory Party  (A 70s party), a Carnival party (themed around Brazillian carnivals and not MSC's competitor)  and a Space Party (I would like to experience that one).
  • Cruises longer than seven days have two formal nights, often referred to as Gala Nights.

Norwegian Cruise Line

  • Norwegian’s Mega ships (Breakaway class or bigger) are known for their Glow parties where guests are encouraged to wear neon colours.
  • On the smaller ships, they used to have White Hot Parties where guests were encouraged to wear all white. They have now (updated 2023) done away with the White Hot Party and the Glow Party has become the signature party fleetwide. You won't look out of place in white but pack your neon too.
  • Other theme nights you may find on an NCL ship (dependent on the length of cruise and itinerary) include Latin night, Caribbean Night, a 50s & 60s sock hop, 70s night, 80s night, a country hoedown and a Latin dance party.
  • There will be at least one “Dress up or not night” per cruise, with the possibility of more on longer itineraries.

P&O Cruises

  • P&O is known for a Bianco party, their version of the White Party,  as well as a Nero party, the antithesis of a white party where everyone wears black. Way to shake things up, P&O!
  • They are also rumoured to have a Back to School Party.
  • P&O seems to be most well known for its Gatsby Party. From what I understand, this overlaps their signature party and their formal night. Apparently, they do 1920s dance classes and sequinned headband-making craft sessions in preparation for it.

Royal Caribbean:

  • A 70s night or 'Disco Inferno' is also a common theme night on Royal Caribbean, but they seem to have replaced the 70s party with a 90s party on The Harmony of the Seas.
  • They also host a Red Party on the Harmony of the Seas, a high-energy party with DJs, surprise performances, special effects and technology.
  • Some of the other parties you may experience on Royal Caribbean include a Black & White Night, a 50s, 60’s or 80’s party or a Country Western party.
  • Toga parties and Caribbean parties (dependant on the itinerary) also happen on occasion.
  • Sometimes on Royal Caribbean, the formal night is replaced with a masquerade ball (pre-pandemic these masks covered your eyes not your mouth but that may have changed). Cruises that are seven days long or longer usually have two formal nights, the first one being a bigger deal than the second.  (Formal attire is recommended but not mandatory.)

Virgin Voyages:

  • Virgin Voyages obviously does things differently. They have swopped out the white night for a red night or ‘Scarlet Night’ which is said to feature art installations and performances throughout the ship. It’s less a party and more a ship-wide activation.
  • It may also be the only cruise line that doesn’t do a formal night.
  • Apparently, the spa is also the location of a spa party complete with DJs.

Additional Parties

  • In addition to this, Sailaway parties are standard on most cruise lines
  • Halloween, New Year's Eve and Christmas have their own theme parties
  • If you’re sailing off the coast of the USA, you can also look forward to parties that commemorate the Super Bowl, the 4th of July and St. Patrick's Day.
  • If you cross the equator, there's also a party for that.

Stepping into this grand affair requires a finesse adorned in attire that resonates with the night’s royal essence. This section aims to unfurl the fabric of dress code etiquette, ensuring you glide through the evening with grace and ease.

Overview of Princess Cruise Dress Code

Princess Cruises advocates a dress code that balances sophistication with comfort.

The atmosphere on formal nights is one of refined elegance, where every guest is a jewel in the crown of the night. Here’s a glimpse into the attire guidelines:

  • Men : Traditionally, a suit or tuxedo encapsulates the desired look. A dark suit paired with a crisp dress shirt and a tie or bow tie is a classic choice.
  • Women : Evening gowns, cocktail dresses, or elegant pantsuits echo the night’s elegance. The length of dresses can vary, though a knee-length or longer is often preferred.
  • Children : While there’s a touch of leniency for the younger guests, dressing them in formal or semi-formal attire complements the evening’s atmosphere.

Men’s Dress Code

Dressing for a formal night is an ode to elegance. Here’s a more detailed insight into men’s attire:

  • Suits and Tuxedos : A well-fitted suit or a tuxedo is a timeless choice. While black is a classic, feel free to explore navy or charcoal grey for a touch of uniqueness.
  • Dress Shirts and Ties : A crisp dress shirt, coupled with a tie or bow tie, polishes the look. A light-colored shirt contrasting with a dark suit often creates a sharp ensemble.
  • Footwear : Leather dress shoes or other formal footwear complete the outfit. Remember, comfort is key as you may find yourself dancing the night away!

Packing Tips for Norwegian's Theme Nights

Packing Tips for Norwegian's Themed Nights

It's amazing to think of all the esteemed awards Norwegian Cruise Line has won throughout the years, including being cited as the World's Leading Cruise Line. Here's another accolade that should grab your attention: best nightlife. Norwegian guests know how to party. We all know it's easy to show up at any celebration or event in life, but wouldn't you rather look the part and get in on the action? Let's have some fun Norwegian style . Check out the inside scoop on what you need to pack for some of the hottest parties at sea.

Ready to start planning? Explore all Norwegian cruises .

Dancing Under the Stars

As any good cowboy would tell you, there's nothing quite like being out underneath the vast night sky filled with twinkling stars — unless you're on the ocean waters, of course. Norwegian invites you to go dancing under the stars on its Nashville Nights & Lights party on board Norwegian Bliss , where entertainment is provided by a DJ and a live band from none other than the Music City itself. What should you pack for this boot-scootin' party? Denim, a checkered shirt, and a bandana, along with your cowboy hat and boots, and you'll be in the country and Western groove.

Latin Night

If you've been lucky enough to attend a performance of Burn the Floor on the Norwegian Breakaway, Norwegian Getaway, or Norwegian Epic, you know how hot and steamy a Latin night can be. What to pack? Women will sizzle in red, and a dress with movement will get you extra points. Don't forget those sexy high heels you've got hidden in the back of your closet. And for men? It's better to be a little more polished with your clothes than not - dark jeans or slacks, a polo, or a collared shirt. Topping off the look with a cool fedora should do the trick.

Channel your inner John Travolta or Donna Summer during this free-flowing night dedicated to the Generation X era. What do you pack for this retro flashback? You may want to hit the back of your closet again for this one, the very back — or maybe a secondhand store. Here's the skinny: Wide bell-bottoms, embroidered vests, and "hippie" clothes for women would be fab, while disco shirts and those awesome leisure suits would be sweet for men. You get bonus points if you learn the Stayin' Alive or YMCA dance moves before going on your cruise vacation .

When you realize the night is always still young! #CruiseMoments #CruiseNorwegian A post shared by Norwegian Cruise Line (@norwegiancruiseline) on Mar 30, 2018 at 4:34pm PDT

Yuppies, unite. Now that you've danced the night away to the '70s, you can Cabbage Patch or Moonwalk your way into the '80s. Either way, you'll be doing The Running Man in no time. The '80s had some wild clothing styles, so the crazier, the better. Think leg warmers, shoulder pads, and neon colors topped off with fingerless gloves for women. What about the totally rad mesh T-shirts and parachute pants for men? A must before cruising? You'll need to review and memorize the Thriller dance moves.

White Hot Party

The signature Norwegian Cruise Line White Hot Party will easily be one of the most attended parties during your cruise. Why? It could be because it's such a simple concept: Wear all-white clothing, and you're good to go. Or maybe it's because the DJs are spinning some of the trendiest club music around. This iconic party idea originated in France more than 50 years ago as a fundraiser, and it's still white hot today. Fashion tip for women? Wear skin tone unmentionables underneath your white clothing so they won't show. For men? It's time to wear those white sneakers.

The days are hot, the nights are steamy! #NorwegianBLISS takes Miami. A post shared by Norwegian Cruise Line (@norwegiancruiseline) on May 9, 2018 at 8:29pm PDT

Whether you're a first-time cruise guest or an Ambassador Latitudes Rewards Member, feel free to party it up on board Norwegian Cruise Line. After all, you're on vacation. Where do all the themed night parties take place? Many of these events are held at Spice H20, an adults-only venue by day, turned hip oceanfront club at night. When you enter this space, you'll find an open-air dance floor, a giant TV screen, and plenty of cozy seating areas. You'll discover an inviting bar area, hot tubs, and grotto-style waterfalls for cooling off, plus amazing ocean views. Other parties take place on the top deck. Just be sure to check your daily for more information.

It's important to mention that you don't have to attend any party or do anything you basically don't want to do on a cruise ship. Feel free to do what you want, when you want - that's the beauty of Freestyle Cruising with Norwegian Cruise Line. Why? The experience is all about you. It's your vacation, your way. Don't worry about learning those Michael Jackson dance moves - unless you want to, of course. Enjoy your cruise vacation however you want. And after all, you still need enough room in your suitcase to bring home souvenirs, so leave that sequin glove at home.

Dressing for Theme Nights: Fun and Festive Cruise Attire

One of the most exciting things about going on a cruise is the opportunity to dress up for theme nights. Cruise theme nights allow you to express your creativity, have fun, and make memories that will last a lifetime. Whether you’re planning to attend a formal night, a tropical/Hawaiian night, a pirate night, an 80s/90s night, a Halloween costume party, a masquerade ball, or a country-western night, there are dress code guidelines you need to follow to look your best. In this article, we will provide you with comprehensive information on how to dress for cruise party theme nights. We will cover the dress code guidelines, creative outfit ideas, packing tips, and recommendations to help you make the most of your cruise experience. So, let’s get started!

Types of Theme Nights on Cruises

Formal night.

Formal night is one of the most elegant and glamorous events on a cruise ship. The dress code for formal night varies from cruise line to cruise line, but generally, it involves wearing black-tie attire or a formal gown. For men, this means a tuxedo or a dark suit with a dress shirt and tie. For women, this means a full-length gown or a cocktail dress. Some cruise lines also allow dressy pantsuits for women. It’s important to check with your cruise line to ensure you’re following their dress code guidelines for formal night.

Tropical/Hawaiian Night

Tropical/Hawaiian night is all about embracing the island vibe. This theme night usually takes place on a deck or poolside, and the dress code is casual and colorful. Men can wear a Hawaiian shirt or a tank top with shorts, while women can wear a sundress or a floral top with shorts or a skirt. Don’t forget to accessorize with a lei or a flower crown to complete the look.

Pirate Night

Pirate night is one of the most popular theme nights on cruises, and it’s a great opportunity to channel your inner Jack Sparrow. The dress code for pirate night is pirate-inspired attire, which can include a pirate hat, an eye patch, a bandana, a vest, and boots. Men can wear a white shirt with a vest and a sash, while women can wear a corset with a skirt and a headscarf. Don’t forget to accessorize with a sword or a parrot.

80s/90s Night

80s/90s night is a throwback to the decades of big hair, neon colors, and shoulder pads. The dress code for this theme night is retro-inspired attire, which can include a denim jacket, a neon-colored shirt, a scrunchie, and leg warmers. Men can wear a leather jacket with a band T-shirt and ripped jeans, while women can wear a mini skirt with a crop top and high-top sneakers.

Halloween Costume Party

Halloween costume party is a chance to show off your creative side and embrace the spooky season. The dress code for this theme night is a costume, which can range from scary to funny to sexy. Some popular costume ideas include a witch, a vampire, a superhero, or a movie character. Don’t forget to accessorize with makeup and props to complete the look.

Masquerade Ball

Masquerade ball is one of the most elegant and mysterious events on a cruise ship. The dress code for this theme night is formal attire with a mask. Men can wear a tuxedo or a dark suit with a dress shirt and a tie, while women can wear a full-length gown or a cocktail dress with a mask. It’s important to choose a mask that complements your outfit and doesn’t obstruct your vision.

Country-Western Night

Country-western night is a chance to embrace your inner cowboy or cowgirl. The dress code for this theme night is western-inspired attire, which can include a cowboy hat, a plaid shirt, a denim jacket, and boots. Mix and Match your Pieces

When packing for theme nights, try to mix and match your pieces to create different looks. For example, wear the same Hawaiian shirt with different shorts or wear the same pirate hat with a different shirt.

Pack Accessories to Enhance your Outfits

Accessories are a great way to enhance your outfits and make them more festive. Pack items like leis, flower crowns, and pirate accessories to complete your look.

Don’t Forget Comfortable Shoes

12 Themed Cruises You Should Have On Your Radar In 2024

T aking a cruise is an experience unlike anything else. Days at sea on a ship full of entertainment and relaxation make for a fantastic vacation. But what if you want even more from your cruise? A theme might be what's missing. In addition to all the usual cruise experiences, themed cruises allow fans of a particular artist, lifestyle, hobby (or even animal), to celebrate their passion on the high seas with activities, events, surprises, and sometimes special guests.

There are dozens of themed cruises on offer each year, usually hosted by major cruise lines like Norwegian , Carnival, and Royal Caribbean. But don't let their numbers fool you. According to  Business Insider , themed cruises are rapidly climbing in popularity, and some trips are selling out in record time. That means it's important to find your dream-themed cruise and reserve your tickets as early as possible.

Fortunately, even if they're sold out, most themed cruises will let you join a waiting list, so there's still hope! Here are 12 themed cruises that will set sail in 2024 and are well worth boarding, either now or the next time they hit the high seas.

The Emo's Not Dead Cruise

If you truly know it's not a phase, the Emo's Not Dead Cruise is perfect for you. Gather with fellow emo fans for four days (and nights) of concerts, activities, and even a private party at Great Stirrup Kay in the Bahamas. Over a dozen bands will perform, including Yellowcard, Senses Fail, and Armor for Sleep. Alongside themed activities like a masquerade ball, cruisegoers can also enjoy surprisingly cheerful activities like a bellyflop competition in the ship's pool.

The first Emo's Not Dead cruise was in 2022. Cruisegoer and emo fan TheReelChris shared highlights on  YouTube , calling it "EPIC." Fans in the comments section agree, with Schecterplayer92 adding, "This was one of the best experiences of my life." With a killer lineup and entertaining activities scheduled, it seems like Emo's Not Dead 2024 will also be a rad experience. The cruise will be hosted on the Norwegian Pearl, leaving from Miami on February 26 and returning on March 1, 2024. But what would an emo-related cruise be without a little sadness? Unfortunately, the cruise is already sold out. If you're interested, you can  sign up for the waiting list  and hope.

Meow Meow Cruise

Some of us know that no matter how great a vacation might be, cats would make it even better. Meow Meow Cruise has solved that problem. While guests unfortunately aren't allowed to bring their own furry friends aboard Virgin Voyages' Scarlet Lady, the four-day cruise will give them their feline fix in plenty of other ways.

Activities include cat-themed trivia and a scavenger hunt. But the best part may be communing with fellow cat people (many of whom stroll around the ship wearing cat ears). You'll also be able to mingle with real cats -- one of 2024's ports of call is Key West, where you'll find the Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum and its community of about 60 friendly polydactyl kitties, many of them descended from one of the author's own pets.

It's hard to find reviews for Meow Meow Cruise, but the fact that this themed cruise has been going on annually since 2015 speaks for itself. The 2024 Meow Meow Cruise sets sail from Miami on February 21, with a return date of February 25. Tickets are still available, but to be sure you don't miss out, consider booking right now.

In My Cruise Era

Sure, cruises are great — and cruising is a multi-billion dollar industry — but is anything more popular than Taylor Swift? For those who can't imagine anyone saying "no" to that question, there's no better cruise than In My Cruise Era. While not officially affiliated with Taylor Swift, this themed cruise is a passionate fan homage. Swifties will be able to dress up in their favorite Taylor-inspired looks, exchange friendship bracelets, perform their idol's songs during karaoke sessions, and more. We're also guessing there will be of lots impromptu song breaks throughout the ship from Taylor's extensive catalog.

Royal Caribbean's Allure of the Seas will host this cruise, which sets sail from Miami on October 21, 2024 -- which, as People Magazine points out, is one day after the Eras Tour will be in the city. Fans lucky enough to attend the concert can continue their Taylor euphoria for four more days on the high seas. Since this is a new themed cruise, there aren't any reviews, but based on the positive fan vibes from Eras Tour concerts and movie viewings, among other events, we're guessing it's going to be a great time for Swifties. Swifties must agree, since the cruise is already sold out. Cancellations do happen, though, so hopeful fans can join the waiting list.  Contact the cruise's organizers to sign up.

Disney's Halloween On The High Seas

Go on just about any cruise-related blog or website and you'll see that Disney Cruise Line's Halloween-themed cruise, officially called Halloween on the High Seas, is a popular favorite. As you probably expect from Disney, this themed cruise is perfect for a family vacation , so it's not too scary. The cruise is hosted on multiple Disney Cruise Line ships, and each one is decorated with the care and attention to detail you'll find in most Disney-related enterprises. The Pumpkin Tree is the highlight of the decor, with pumpkins that eventually appear on its branches and transform into lit and unlit jack o'lanterns.

Halloween on the High Seas also features Halloween activities (including a trick-or-treating night) and exclusive Halloween-themed desserts. Disney cruises in general are known for their opportunities to meet the studio's beloved characters, and during the Halloween on the High Seas cruises, some of those characters are in costume. Notably, Disney Cruise Line's official site tells us, Minnie Mouse, Daisy Duck, and Clarabelle Cow will be dressed as the Sanderson Sisters -- who wouldn't want to see that?

This magical mixture of whimsy, fun, and exclusive opportunities is the perfect way to cast a spell on Disney fans of all ages. Luckily, Halloween on the High Seas is held during a number of different times in September and October, so you and your family should be able to find a place on board!

The Hallmark Channel Christmas Cruise

Sure, Hallmark Channel Christmas movies might be a little on the cheesy side, but let's be honest: lots of us dream of being in one in real life. You can get a little of the real-life Hallmark movie experience by visiting some of the movies' filming locations , but now there's a way to have an even more immersive experience: The Hallmark Channel Christmas Cruise.

Passengers will get to meet Hallmark Channel movie stars, attend panels and photo ops, and get to see a new Hallmark Christmas movie before its world premiere. Maybe best of all, passengers can take part in lots of Hallmark Christmas movie-inspired activities, including tree lighting and cookie decorating -- all while wearing their favorite ugly Christmas sweaters.

2024 is the first year of the Hallmark Channel Christmas Cruise. It was originally intended to be just one cruise, but a second one was added after the first one sold out. As of now, two Hallmark Channel Christmas Cruises are scheduled for 2024. Both go from Miami to the Bahamas and back and last four days in November. ... And both are sold out. But Christmas is a time of miracles, so if a Hallmark Channel Christmas experience on the high seas sounds like your dream come true, sign up for the waiting list as soon as you can!

Hurtigruten Northern Lights Cruises

Themed cruises are often about fandoms and hobbies. But Norway-based cruise line Hurtigruten offers a themed cruise that's about something even bigger: the Northern Lights . There are several Northern Lights-themed cruises out there, including some luxurious options by Cunard. Unfortunately, the Northern Lights aren't always visible, but Hurtigruten stands out by offering a Northern Lights Promise for cruises scheduled between September 26 and March 31 and lasting longer than 11 days. If the Northern Lights aren't visible during your cruise, they'll give you another one. So if you're serious about seeing the Aurora Borealis, this is the company to choose.

The Northern Lights are the focus of Hurtigruten's eponymous cruises, but there are also other things to do on board, including scientific lectures and photography lessons. There are excursions, too -- notably a dog sledding option. Passengers who've taken one of Hurtigruten's cruises unanimously praise the stunning fjords and landscapes you can admire from the ship and during excursions, not to mention their experiences of seeing the Northern Lights. Some warn that the ships aren't as luxurious or modern as many other cruise ships, primarily because Hurtigruten's ships are also functional vessels intended to transport and deliver mail to various points on the Norwegian coast. Still,  Cruise Critic reviewers like cmolaison praise the friendly crew, the surprising level of comfort, and the "stunning vistas" you'll see, saying he and his family "highly recommend" taking a Hurtigruten cruise.

Cruise & Crop Crafting Cruises

If the perfect vacation for you is a combination of R&R and crafting, you're in luck! There are several crafting-themed cruises. One of the most popular is organized by Cruise & Crop, with ships around the world hosting different crafting- and arts-themed trips. This makes them the most accessible themed cruises on our list, with different price ranges, departure points, itineraries, and ports of call. One thing all crafting cruises have in common, though, is groups of like-minded people exploring their creativity amid the other joys of cruising.

For instance, one of Crop & Cruise's 2024 offerings is a Mexican Riviera cruise aboard Royal Caribbean's Navigator of the Seas, featuring scrapbooking and other papercraft classes taught by artist Barb Warne. The ship departs from Los Angeles on April 19, returning April 26. Many Cruise & Crop cruises sell out quickly, so if this idea has sparked both your wanderlust and your creativity, be sure to check their list of 2024 cruises and reserve as soon as you can.

Star Trek: The Cruise

For seven days and nights every year, thousands of Star Trek fans gather to be a part of a fandom extravaganza at sea. Star Trek: The Cruise is an experience that features celebrities aboard (2024's guests include LeVar Burton and Wil Wheaton, among many others), costume and cosplay events, and lots of fun activities.

But what makes Star Trek: The Cruise truly unique is that audience participation is very much encouraged. Passengers and celebrity guests are all considered the crew of one great, big, intergalactic vessel. Passengers get to interact with the guest stars in events like karaoke battles, and stars share parts of their earthly lives with Q&A sessions and even glimpses at other projects they may be involved in.

The first Star Trek: The Cruise was held in 2017 and since then it's been a fan favorite. Star Wars and cruising aficionado Aaron Bossig writes on  Trek Movie.com that many fans go on the cruise every year, and proudly wear t-shirts from the previous ones. He calls Star Trek: The Cruise "an extra special convention experience." 2024's edition will be held on the Mariner of the Seas, departing from Cape Canaveral, Florida, on February 22 and returning on February 29.

Literature Festival At Sea

Once a year, aboard the legendary Queen Mary 2, passengers can mingle with writers, poets, journalists, and critics in a full-blown literary festival in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Literature Festival at Sea invites writers in all genres to host round table discussions, participate in Q&As revolving around their work and areas of expertise, host workshops, and converse with passengers.

Whether passengers want to participate as much as possible or just attend a few events, the Festival seems to be an excellent addition to a typical Queen Mary 2 voyage. On TripAdvisor , passenger Artemis C writes of her experience at a previous Literature Festival at Sea that "the whole week was a joy".

2024's lineup features crime novelists, journalists, historians, and more, for what's sure to be a fascinating week of discussion and discovery. If you'd like to combine an elegant transatlantic cruise and a literary experience, 2024's Literature Festival at Sea will take place from November 13-20, departing from Southampton, U.K., and arriving in New York. Cunard has also launched an Australian Literature Festival at Sea, scheduled from December 11-16, 2024, on the Queen Elizabeth, which departs from and returns to Sydney.

Chefs Making Waves

Many cruise lines are proud of their food offerings. Some cruises feature dishes created by world-famous chefs, and others even host food and wine festivals. But no culinary cruise event seems quite as, well, fun, as Chefs Making Waves. This culinary-themed cruise will set sail for the first time in 2024. Onboard will be a number of beloved celebrity chefs, including Anne Burrell and the Cake Boss himself, Buddy Valastro. Cooking demos and, of course, food tastings of all kinds (including sit-down meals, desserts, and street food) are on the menu. Best of all, Chefs Making Waves is an all-inclusive cruise, so everyone can eat and drink without having to pay extra!

There will be all of the usual cruise-related fun, from swimming to excursions, to help you work up an appetite. There will also be unique games, with some of the chefs participating in events like bingo and a celebrity chef sing-off. If this sounds like an awesome cruise, you're not the only one who feels that way. Chefs Making Waves will take place from March 25-29, departing from Miami with excursions in Great Stirrup Cay and Nassau, Bahamas ... and it's already sold out. But you can still  sign up for the waiting list . With a little luck, you'll be able to enjoy this delicious, themed cruise experience.

Soul Train Cruise

Imagine a festival with a lineup featuring some of the best soul and R&B acts of all time. Now imagine it's on a relaxing cruise ship. This dream is actually reality -- it's called the Soul Train Cruise. The popular themed cruise will be celebrating its 11th year in 2024 and the lineup is on fire. Dozens of groups and artists will perform, including The Temptations, Boyz II Men, and En Vogue. Passengers can also learn how to dance like people did back in the old school days of Soul Train's TV show, with lessons from some of the show's actual dancers. There will also be wine tastings, Q&A's, comedy shows, and a lot more.

With all of this on offer, it's no surprise that the Soul Train Cruise is sold out. But sign up on the waiting list and keep your calendar free from January 27-February 3, and you may get lucky. If you do, the cruise leaves from Fort Lauderdale, with ports of call in Tortola (British Virgin Islands) and St. Maarten.

The Gothic Cruise

The Gothic Cruise is an annual event held on an ordinary cruise ship. Goths mingle with "norms" but have their own private events on board, mostly DJ sets and concerts. There's also a masquerade ball, with Goths decked out in their finest Victorian-style garb ... as long as it meets ship safety requirements, that is. The cruise's website specifies that simulated weapons aren't allowed and notes that hoop skirts are fine for the ball but not in the ship's dining areas, "due to the close proximity of the tables". And yet, the Goth community thrives on these cruises -- and even gains norm fans along the way.

In a Porthole Magazine article about the Gothic Cruise, longtime attendee Spike Pittman says that many mainstream passengers are wary of the Goths at first, "But by the end they're begging to get into our private events." Some even book their future cruises to coincide with the Gothic Cruise, even if they don't plan on attending every event.

The Gothic Cruise has been held since 1989. Cruising doesn't seem very Goth, but in the end, the article points out, it comes down to what all themed cruises offer: a sense of community (in this case, one that often stays up all night and sleeps during the day). If this moves your little black heart, the 2024 Gothic Cruise will be held on the Norwegian Escape (but book through the Gothic Cruise's website for private event access), departing from Orlando on March 2, and returning March 9.

NCL Theme Nights 2024 Schedule

Photo of author

March 15, 2024

theme nights on ncl

Are you about to travel with Norwegian Cruise Line and want to know what theme nights you will find on your trip? Then this is the right article for you.

You will find the full schedule of the 2024 theme nights.

The only thing I want to say before we start is that NCL is a little different than other cruise lines .

It seems that they care more about the idea of “ Freestyle Cruising ” rather than having specific dress codes.

For this reason, there is not the same number of themed party night s that you can find on Carnival Royal Caribbean or MSC.

However, there are some themed nights and parties so let’s take a look at them.

Table of Contents

The Glow Night

Glow part on NCL

Glow Night is one of the most famous ones on NCL.

It’s basically a vibrant, neon-filled party under the stars where guests are encouraged to wear bright and fluorescent colors .

You will find music, dancing and light shows that will create a lively and electrifying atmosphere.

For this theme night, women can wear neon-colored dresses , fluorescent leggings , or glow-in-the-dark accessories like glow bracelets and necklaces.

If you wanna keep it simple a neon skirt or t-shirt will be enough .

Men can wear neon or bright-colored shirts with bright shorts or trousers. Remember to play with accessories like a glow-in-the-dark tie, wristbands, or hats

70’s, 80’s or 90’s night

The nostalgic-themed nights are some of my favorite ones.

They will take you back to the 70s, 80s, or 90s with music hits, iconic dance moves, and unforgettable fashion.

All the passengers of the cruise will basically celebrate the past with a party of retro fun.

What to wear? Well, there’s tons of stuff to choose from!

Women can opt for bell-bottom jeans , colorful jumpsuits , or sequined dresses to reflect the 70s disco era.

Electric neon outfits for the 80s, or grunge-inspired ensembles for the 90s. Accessories like hoop earrings, headbands, and platforms can complete every look.

Men can choose from a wide range of options, such as polyester suits and platform shoes for a 70s vibe, leather jackets for the 80s, or flannel shirts and band tees for the 90s.

Just follow your spirit and wear what makes you feel good!

This night is usually followed by a Latin party featuring salsa, bachata, and merengue music.

What is the most appropriate dress code? Women can wear f lowing dresses or skirts that are easy to move in, paired with comfortable dancing shoes .

Outfits often include red clothes or warm patterns , reflecting the energy and warmth of Latin culture.

Men can go for casual or semi-formal attire , such as bright-colored shirts paired with trousers or jeans.

Formal nights

During formal nights on cruise ships, guests have the opportunity to dress up and enjoy an elegant evening .

These nights often include fine dining, a cocktail with the captain, and professional photography sessions.

However, NCL is one of the few cruise lines that has no formal night .

The reason behind that choice is that NCL believes in “Freestyle Cruising” and therefore never requires an elegant dress code .

However, if you like dressing up you can still do it to take some nice photos .

Women can wear a cocktail dress or a sophisticated pantsuit while men can wear a suit or a tuxedo.

White Night

White Nigh t is a fun event held on many cruise ships. The idea is that guests dress entirely in white for a night.

As far as I know, it’s the only theme night present on every cruise line: we saw it among the Royal Caribbean theme nights , among the Carnival theme nights , and even among the MSC theme nights !

As I have already explained to you in other articles, the dress code is quite simple: you have to dress completely in white .

Some of you have written to me that they have everything but they don’t have white pants in their closet. Then you can simply pair a white shirt with light-colored jeans .

The Schedule for all Ships

NCL Ship

As you can imagine, not all theme nights are the same for every ship.

They may change based on the itinerary, the duration of the cruise, and the choices of the cruise director.

Below you will find the 2024 schedule for all NCL ships ( take these as indicative as they may vary ).

Day-To-Night Outfits

To bring on your cruise.

Explore the world in style with these five perfect cruise outfits that'll keep you comfortable as you go from pool deck to onshore excursion and back again. Put together a capsule wardrobe made up of a few versatile pieces that can be mixed and matched for any adventure.

The quintessential cruise style consists of chic but relaxed pieces. Think breezy fabrics, loose silhouettes, light neutrals, bright colors and beachy accessories.

Lean into tropical prints, red and coral hues that pop against aquamarine waters, woven hats and classic sunglasses.

Your cruise outfits will be as fun to wear as they are to look at.

Port-Day Wardrobe

Fashion and function combine on days strolling through port cities.

Breezy top or polo shirt

Flowy maxi dress

Wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses

Comfortable sandals

Capris or shorts

Dress it up

A cardigan or button-up shirt adds evening elegance when it's time for dinner.

Onboard Ensemble

Go for comfort on those relaxing sea days.

Swimsuit or stylish swim trunks

Sundress or a loose nautical-themed shirt

Panama hat and sunglasses

Comfortable sandals or flip-flops

Swap flip-flops for dressy sandals or closed-toed shoes before heading to the onboard restaurant.

Adventure Attire

Be ready for all of the fun cruise ship adventures, from the skydive simulator to the waterpark.

Lightweight shirt

Athletic shorts or leggings

Long-sleeved shirt, sunglasses and hat

Shoes with sturdy soles

Before showtime at the onboard theater, change into a skirt or trousers, dress shoes and an airy scarf for a polished look.

Beach-Day Outfit

Nothing says beach paradise vacation like an outfit that's laid-back yet luxe.

Swim shorts with a Cuban collar shirt

Hat and sunglasses

Swimsuit under a romper or sundress

Have dinner reservations? Trade your beach sandals for smart penny loafers, and add seashell-inspired jewelry or a sleek watch

Sightseeing Cruise Outfit

Opt for loose, breathable fabrics on big days out to roam any terrain from rainforests to ruins.

A lightweight shirt

Socks and boots or sneakers

Sunhat and sunglasses

Breezy linen pants

This outfit can easily carry you into the evening, but dainty jewelry, colorful slip-on shoes, a Panama hat and swapping from a backpack to handbag will create a softer look.

Getting There

Get packed and ready to set sail on the Ultimate World Cruise.

T hough it's tempting to pack everything, cruise outfits are meant to be laid-back, so plan to wear a few items of clothing more than once — no one will judge you, promise. Pack a few key staple pieces that can be paired together in several different mix and match styles — this is called a capsule wardrobe. To ensure you can put together a great outfit each day, pack mindfully in one color palette or scheme — colors like red, coral and yellow will pop in pictures when photographed in front of a turquoise sea. If you're wondering what to pack for a five-day cruise, bring along six shirts, six sets of underwear, and three to four bottoms. Then, throw in at least two swimsuits, so you always have one dry. Finally, pajamas, a jacket or sweater, athleisure wear, a hat, sunglasses, sandals, athletic shoes, and dress shoes round out a perfect cruise outfit packing list.

Breezy fabrics like cotton and linen in a loose silhouette keep you cool and covered under the sun during the daytime, and with a few adaptable accessories, you can transition seamlessly into a polished evening look. No matter if you're spending your day sipping an ice-cold cocktail on deck, strolling along a sandy beach, adventuring on jungle trails or searching for local treats, these five versatile day-to-night cruise outfit ideas will make packing easy, getting you on island time, in no time.

1. Port-Day Wardrobe

If you'll be spending your port days shopping, dining, and exploring new cities and towns, you'll need cruise outfit ideas that are both stylish and practical. A flowy top or polo shirt, bright-colored capris or khaki shorts, comfortable shoes, sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat will keep you cool during the day. When the sun goes down, dress it up with a button-down shirt, shawl or cardigan.

2. Onboard Ensemble

For days spent at sea, you'll want cruise attire that's comfortable and convertible. A swimsuit underneath a sundress or flowy shirt and shorts is an outfit that will take you from the pool to the spa to the mini golf course and beyond. When it's time for dinner, swap your shorts for trousers and slip on dressy sandals or closed-toe shoes. If you're cruising with your kids, be prepared for spills and stains with an extra shirt.

Solid-colored board shorts paired with a button-up shirt (nautical print encouraged) work just as well for a day on deck. Then, change from swim trunks and flip-flops to chinos and dress shoes before heading to the onboard restaurant. A Panama hat adds an element of holiday luxe no matter the time of day.

3. Adventure Attire

The best outfits for a cruise are the ones you can wear all day long. If you have a list of adventure activities planned for your shore excursions, or if you'll be braving the ship's RipCord® by iFly® skydive simulator and Zip Line, pack accordingly. During the day, wear athletic shorts, a neutral-colored tank top, and sneakers or sandals. Don't forget a hat, sunglasses and a long-sleeved sun shirt in your day bag. Need to dress up for dinner? It's simple. Pack extra clothes in a tote bag in case you don't have time to go back to your stateroom. Swap your athletic shorts for a flowy skirt or trousers, and trade your sneakers for a more formal pair of shoes, like chunky heels or loafers for a put-together look.

4. Beach-Day Outfit

For many, a cruise vacation is all about spending as much time as possible in or near the sea. Maybe this means claiming a lounge chair as your own, seeking a spot in the sand without footprints or swimming out into the clear blue water. When you're done wading in the water or soaking up the sun, a cover-up like a romper, oversized shirt or dress is always a stylish choice for wandering local shops and grabbing a seaside lunch. Quick-drying swim trunks are the go-to staple for this cruise outfit and is a perfect choice for kids. Just throw on a collared shirt and slip-on penny loafers, and you're good to go.

For dinner reservations, add an air of tropical elegance with a pair of wide-legged linen trousers or chinos in a solid color, paired with a linen top in a colorful print and some timeless accessories like a gauzy scarf, dangling necklace, a sleek watch or large sunglasses.

Make sure your cruise packing list includes a lightweight bag for your book, sun protection, wallet, camera, phone and a foldable dry bag tucked inside. When you're done swimming, you can stow your swimwear away in the dry bag without getting the rest of your items wet.

5. Sightseeing Cruise Outfit

When trying to figure out what to wear on a cruise, it's important to plan ahead and know what your must-dos are for your cruise vacation. For long days jam-packed with historical and natural sights to see, pack fabrics that are breathable and comfortable. Linen pants and a good pair of socks and boots are invaluable for rainforest hikes, while a lightweight long-sleeve shirt and a sunhat with a drawstring will keep you covered when visiting ancient ruins. If you're packing outfits for a cruise destination in a warm climate, bring something that can be worn over a swimsuit, so you're always ready to take a dip in hidden cenotes.

When it's time to hit the town at night, add some accessories to soften this look like dainty jewelry, colorful slip-on shoes, a Panama hat and a handbag.
