Imola F1 Track Guide
Imola Circuit Map & Guide
Located in the small Italian town of Imola just south of Bologna, the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari resumed its place on the F1 calendar in 2020 after over a decade’s absence. Originally a stand-in for cancelled races during the COVID-19 pandemic, the race continued in 2021/22 and a contract extension was signed ensuring Imola’s place on the calendar until 2025. This Grand Prix has a long and sometimes tragic history, sadly most known for the tragic deaths of Ayrton Senna and Roland Ratzenberger in 1994. Track changes since have made it far safer and due to the short and tight nature of the circuit – which leads to close racing, the most memorable being Fernando Alonso and Michael Schumacher’s epic battle for victory in 2005. The spiritual home of Ferrari, the passionate tifosi will be in full voice all weekend long.
While each of our Emilia Romagna Grand Prix Packages comes with a pre-defined grandstand ticket, we’ve created this Emilia Romagna F1 Track guide to help you choose an alternative.

Grandstand: 1
Grandstand 1 sits right next to Grandstand A at the entry into Tamburello at turn 1. An uncovered stand, you will have a large screen opposite your seats meaning you will be able to keep track of the weekend proceedings. A drawback to consider is the view, being slightly obstructed by fencing as this stand is closer to ground level than its neighbours I, M and A further back down the start/finish straight.
Grandstand: 2-4
A set of three stands, Grandstands 2 through 4 are located on the inside of the circuit on the exit of the Tamburello chicane. Thanks to the nature of the Imola track, you will feel close to the action in these stands with a view to your right of cars exiting the opening set of corners. The opening lap will provide plenty of wheel-to-wheel vision of the cars close up, and you will have some good photo opportunities of the cars as they head into the Villeneuve chicane.
Grandstand: B
The Imola circuit has seen many changes over the years for safety reasons, with the Villeneuve chicane and Tosa hairpin at Grandstand B significantly altered. Despite this, it is still a driver’s favourite, and your seats in Grandstand B provide perfect views of the quick exit of the chicane into the Tosa hairpin as well as the uphill exit. Despite it being a tighter hairpin than the comparable Suzuka and Montreal corners, the Tosa hairpin is still a popular overtaking point. With very little run-off – you will feel very close to the action in Grandstand B. A giant screen ensures you will be able to follow the action on the rest of the track also.
Grandstand: 5
Adjacent to Grandstand B is the smaller Grandstand 5, here you will have similar views to Grandstand B, albeit set a little further back from the track. The upshot of this however is you will have relatively unobstructed views by the catch fencing allowing for some decent photo opportunities. Grandstand 5 is on the exit of the Tosa hairpin, meaning your on-track views will be corner exit and the uphill run into Acqua Minerali.
Grandstand: D,E,F
A hugely popular set of three stands, the D, E and F stands are located in the iconic Acqua Minerali section of the Imola track – a fast sweeping right hand corner which an F1 car can take almost at full throttle, which is a sight to behold from these stands. Regardless of your seats in Grandstands D-F, you will have excellent vision of both the track and the Imola scenery. The true undulating nature of the Imola circuit can only truly be appreciated from being at the track, and these stands will give you the best feel of this. While these grandstands are not covered, the back rows are covered by the trees located at the circuit. Giant screens are also directly across from the stands, meaning you won’t miss a minute of the action.
Grandstand: 7
One of four grandstands on the outside of the track, Grandstand 7 is located at the Variante Alta chicane, a tight right-left uphill chicane. While overtaking here is difficult, here you will truly be able appreciate an F1 car’s cornering ability as they negotiate this tricky set of corners. This chicane is crucial – particularly on corner exit – for the downhill run into the final corner, where overtaking is possible.
Grandstand: R
Grandstand R is located on the inside of the final corner – Rivazza, which is the most popular corner for overtakes at Imola. Being a tight and narrow circuit where overtakes are few and far between, this puts Grandstand R at the top of the list if on-track overtakes are what you are looking for the most. Unlike most, if not all, grandstands on the F1 calendar, Grandstand R is a “natural” grandstand – meaning it is quite literally a hill. Bucket-style seats are built into the landscape meaning each section of the stand has a unique view of the circuit. Here you will be also right at the beginning of the main straight, meaning it is a short trek to the post-race celebrations on the main straight, and a short run down to catch the podium. The crowd in Grandstand R are well known to be the most passionate at the circuit, meaning an electric atmosphere all weekend long.
Grandstand: H
Grandstand H is located on the outside of the final corner. Here you will be sat in the braking zone for Rivazza, meaning there is a chance you will witness some wheel-to-wheel action prior to corner entry. A cheaper option for the budget-conscious, H Grandstand is a short walk to the start-finish straight and has a giant screen meaning you can keep tabs of the race throughout.
Grandstand: I,M,A
A set of three grandstands along the short start/finish straight, Grandstands I, M and A are highly sought-after positions on the circuit. From your seats you will have a vast array of views – from parc ferme, to the pitlane as well as the starting grid. Here you will see the cars exit the final corner Rivazza, fly down the main straight and enter the Tamburello corner. The sole DRS zone on the circuit – it is this section of track where plenty of overtakes are done (or attempted!) and was the scene of the infamous George Russell and Valtteri Bottas incident in 2021. Grandstands M and A are covered while Grandstand I provides almost completely unobstructed views of the track by fencing. All three stands have large screens visible from your seats.

The Imola circuit, near Bologna, Italy, was host of the Formula 1 San Marino Grand Prix from 1981 to 2006. While the death of Ayrton Senna cast a shadow over the circuit in 1994, Imola continues to enjoy a wealth of motorsport activities each year.
Situated near the town of Imola, 40 kilometres east of Bologna, Imola – officially titled Autodromo Internazionale Enzo e Dino Ferrari, in homage to the Ferrari founder and his son – opened as a semi-permanent venue in 1953. At the time, the circuit featured no chicanes, meaning that the track was high speed.
The circuit hosted car and motorcycle races throughout the 1950s. In 1963, it hosted a non-championship Formula 1 race, won by Jim Clark. The configuration was updated to include the Variente Bassa and Variente Alta chicanes in the 1970s. Soon after, and after another non-championship F1 event in 1979, won by Niki Lauda, Imola first hosted a World Championship F1 event for the first time in 1980. Monza was undergoing renovations, so Imola took its place as host of the Italian Grand Prix. The event was a hit, and the circuit remained on the calendar as the San Marino Grand Prix until 2006.
The anti-clockwise circuit has undergone relatively little change since opening in the 1950s. Its biggest re-profiling came as a result of the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix weekend, in which Roland Ratzenberger and Ayrton Senna lost their lives. Senna’s crash at the famous Tamburello turn led to the corner being slowed down. Alongside its F1 duties, Imola also hosted the Superbike World Championship from 2001 to 2006. Both series departed the track for 2007, as the circuit underwent major renovations. In addition to changes to the track layout, the garages and paddock area were rebuilt in a project overseen by Hermann Tilke.
The Superbike World Championship returned to the track in 2009 and remains a popular feature of Imola’s annual schedule. Formula 1 returned to Imola after a 14-year absence amid the coronavirus pandemic in 2020. It has remained on the calendar since, though the 2023 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix was called off due to flooding in the local area. The circuit recently signed a new longer-term contract to remain on the schedule until at least 2025.
In 2024, the World Endurance Championship will join the annual selection of events at Imola for the first time. The 6 Hours of Imola is scheduled to take place in April.

Imola Grandstand Guide: Where to sit at the Imola Grand Prix
Racing at Imola has returned to the Formula 1 calendar. After filling in on the pandemic-affected 2020 season, the Autodromo di Enzo e Dino Ferrari made a welcome reappearance in the 2021 and 2022 racing calendars, but was sadly cancelled in 2023 due to dangerous weather conditions. The good news is, this quintessential racing circuit in the heart of the beautiful Emilia Romagna region is ready to return in 2024!
Built around a vast city park with public roads both lining the outside of the track and crossing over onto the inside of the track, it’s a special circuit that has delivered years of memorable moments.
An old-school circuit with only a handful of grandstands, here’s everything you need to know about getting a good view of the track at Imola ahead of the Emilia Romagna Formula 1 Grand Prix .
Imola Circuit Grandstand Guide for Formula 1
We’ve put together a map of the different grandstand at the Autodromo di Enzo e Dino Ferrari at Imola. This way you can pick out the places you want to sit and compare them with the pricing, and below you will find more detail on each grandstand.
Partenza 2, 3 and 4
Action zones: Start-finish line, starting grid, pit lane Seat type: Grandstand seating (no back) Covered : Partially, at higher rows Numbered seating: Yes
Grandstands Partenza 2, 3 and 4 line the main straight at the circuit. Partenza means “start” in Italian, so you can imagine where these once are located on the circuit. These large grandstands overlook the starting grid and pit lane, making them a prime position to watch the race. You’ll be able to soak up the atmosphere on the grid as the drivers prepare before the race, and catch the podium ceremony above the pits after the chequered flag.
From the final turn to the first, the cars reach high top speeds along this straight, where they will also pick up DRS, so you will be able to see plenty of overtakes from your seat. Behind the grandstand, there is a permanent bar and diner, perfect for fuelling you through the race!
Action zones: Turns 5, 6, 7, 8 and 8 Seat type: Grandstand seating (no back) Covered : No Numbered seating: Yes
After the opening two chicanes, the two Tosa 1 grandstands are located at turn 7. This acute corner is one of the tightest on the circuit, and could be an overtaking opportunity for a brave driver. You’ll see the cars barrel down from the second chicane towards the braking zone at 7, before powering towards the second sector and turns 8 and 9. In 2021, this is the spot where Lewis Hamilton lost control of his Mercedes while lapping cars – a nearly catastrophic error for his race.
Acque Minerali 1, 2 and 3
Action zones: Turns 11, 12 and 13 (Acque Minerali) Seat type: Grandstand seating (no back) Covered : No Numbered seating: Yes
Grandstands Acque Minerali 1, 2 and 3 are on the inside of the circuit at Acque Minerali. This undulating section of the track sees the cars tackle oversteer through turns 12 and 13 while building speed uphill towards the fast third and final sector of the lap. On the inside of the track, these grandstands are very close to the public roads and park at the track. This is quite unique for a Formula 1 track, but has a similar feeling to the national park at Monza.
Action zones: Turns 16, 17 and 18 Seat type: Grandstand seating (no back) Covered : No Numbered seating: Yes
The Rivazza grandstands are located overlooking the penultimate corner of the Imola circuit. On the outside of the first Rivazza corner, you will see the cars bomb downhill towards this braking zone – but that doesn’t mean there’ll be a lack of speed. Track limits are often imposed at the exit of the first turn, as drivers push to pick up every hundredth of a second at this section of the lap.
R ivazza 1 & Prato Rivazza
Rivazza 1 and Prato Rivazza are some of the most unique places to watch a Formula 1 race from, and is hardly a grandstand at all. Forty rows of seating have been installed within a huge grass verge. There are two grandstands at the exit of the second turn at Rivazza on the inside of the track. From R1, you will see cars exit the second Rivazza and pick up the pace towards the start-finish line. From R2, you’ll catch cars peeling off into the pitlane, or power towards the line.
Where to find the best general admission views at the Imola Grand Prix
There are a number of hotspots in the general admission area of the Imola circuit. We recommend getting there early and walking around to find you own favourite spots and then pitching camp if you find the place you want to watch the race from.
One place that we would recommend would be at Acque Minerali at the start of turns 12 and 13 to take in some of the best action. Another is between turns 2, 3 and 4, a prime overtaking spot.
Book tickets for the 2024 Imola Grand Prix
The 2024 Imola Grand Prix is likely to be a popular event due to the previous year’s cancellation and its relatively low price.

INTERNATIONAL CIRCUITS. Racing is in the DNA of this land. A sporting passion that is born and grows in what are among the most important racetracks in the world.
Imola itself is a lovely town and the circuit is just on the edge of the town in beautiful parklands. My first stop once inside the circuit was to visit Ayrton Senna's statue.
