Best of Switzerland tour requires that you have adequate and valid travel insurance covering medical and personal accidents, including repatriation costs and emergency evacuation. World Nomads offers travel insurance for independent travelers and intrepid families.

For this Best of Switzerland tour getting the required visa(s) is the responsibility for each individual traveller, as visa requirements vary depending on your nationality. We recommend to check with your local embassies representing the countries that you are traveling to, as part of this itinerary.

  • Some of Switzerland’s best scenery is found on walks, which can be quite steep and long. While this trip itself doesn't require a high level of fitness, it’s essential to be at least moderately fit if you want to take part in all activities. During the trip, you have the option to hike the trails in the Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau region.
  • The primary means of transportation on this trip is by train. Swiss trains are a fast (and punctual) way to cross long distances, allowing you to avoid traffic jams and arrive right into the city centre. They are comfortable and all have toilets, however, can sometimes be quite busy. You may need to make exchanges in between to reach your destination. Please note that you'll have to carry your own luggage on and off the train and storage space for luggage on trains can be quite limited, so make sure it doesn’t exceed our weight and size recommendations. You can find specifics under ‘Packing’ in the ‘Essential Trip Information’ section.
  • Hotels in Europe often don't have double beds, but rather two single beds that can be pushed together.
  • On this trip you must pack as lightly as possible because you will be expected to carry your own bag and although you won't be required to walk long distances with your luggage (max 30 minutes), we strongly recommend keeping the weight under 15kg / 33lb. Most travellers carry their luggage in a backpack, although an overnight bag with a shoulder strap would suffice if you travel lightly. Smaller bags or backpacks with wheels are convenient although we recommend your bag has carry straps to accommodate the cobbled streets, uneven surfaces, stairs and steps you are likely to encounter while carrying your luggage. You'll also need a day pack/bag to carry water and a camera etc for day trips.
  • Proof of vaccination against COVID-19 is no longer mandatory on departures after 1st January 2023. Nonetheless, all travellers are strongly advised to be vaccinated as a safety measure to protect themselves and others on the tour. This policy excludes all Polar trips and select adventure cruises, where testing and vaccination are required.
  • Also, proof of vaccination may still be required at specific entry points or by the airlines. Therefore, please make sure to check all the travel requirements carefully before travelling.

This trip incorporates the following COVID-19 measures:

  • This tour has received the World Travel and Tourism Council’s Safe Travels stamp, which provides travellers with assurance that COVID-19 health and hygiene global standardised protocols have been adopted.
  • Hygiene and safety guidelines will be followed to ensure your well being is looked after during travels.

Best time to visit switzerland.

May, June, September, and October are wonderful months for seeing Switzerland, as the weather is typically mild, the mountain passes are still open and the country is less crowded than in the peak holiday months of July and August.

It tends to rain more in the months of March, April, October, and November, and with snowfall usually present from December, this is the perfect time for skiers and snowboarders.

Geography and environment

Landlocked Switzerland shares borders with   Austria , Lichtenstein,   Italy ,   France , and   Germany .

A highly mountainous country, Switzerland's best-known ranges are the Alps in the south, with the mighty Matterhorn and iconic Eiger being the most well-known peaks.

Home to an abundance of rolling hills, lakes, glaciers, rivers, meadows, and fields, Switzerland's landscapes are incredibly picturesque, particularly in spring and summer when the wildflowers are in bloom.

Top 5 culinary classics of Switzerland

While not enjoying the same worldwide popularity that it did in the 1960s and 70s, this Swiss classic is still alive and well in Switzerland. Although not to everyone's taste, travelers should experience sitting around a communal pot of rich, melted cheese at least once.

Who knew that a plate of grated, fried potato could taste so good? Considered to be Switzerland's national dish, Rosti was once relegated to the breakfast plate but is now served as an accompaniment to dinners too.

3. Bircher Muesli

This Swiss-German classic has taken off worldwide as a breakfast food, although it was originally created for hospital patients by a Swiss physician. Commonly eaten in the evening in southern Switzerland, it's a nutritious mix of oats, fruits, and seeds.

This brioche-like, plaited bread is a traditional Sunday morning treat in Switzerland. Dating back to the 15th century, this delicious bread can be found in bakeries all over Switzerland, especially on Sundays.

Making hundreds of varieties of cheese, Switzerland is one of the best places in the world to indulge in a dose of calcium. Whether it's a chunk of hard Gruyere, a slice of Emmental, or a bit of fruity Appenzeller, Switzerland has enough cheese shops to satisfy everyone.

Tour overview.

An eight-day jaunt through the countryside and cuisine of Switzerland is the ideal way to see (and taste) all things Swiss. This small nation packs a punch with its mountainous landscapes, glacial lakes, picturesque cities and food staples that are so tough to beat. Beginning in Zurich, travel in comfort by train to lakeside Lucerne, the stunning Swiss Alps and cheese-obsessed and chocolate-stuffed Bulle before finishing in the nation's quaint capital, Bern. Here, the outdoors has never looked so good and the chocolate has never tasted so smooth, so it’s time to sample it all yourself.

Find out why the Swiss are known around the world for their cheese and chocolate, with visits to producers of both in La Gruyere region.

Your local group leader will provide expert advice on how to make the most of your free time, as well as giving you orientation walks around each place so you can get your bearings.

Discover the Top of Europe in the Jungfrau region. With a free day to choose your own adventure, you can take the day as relaxed or as thrill-seeking as you want to explore this highland haven.

Take in the breathtaking alpine views from the summit of Pilatus Mountain with your small group, reached via the steepiest cogwheel railway in the world.

With plenty of free time to explore at your own pace in Bern, you’ll discover why this city is considered as one of the most beautiful and laidback capital cities in the world.

People that have booked this tour have also searched for the following:

Day 1: Zurich

Location: zurich, accommodation: hotel.

Welcome to Switzerland! There's much to see and do in Zurich, so we recommend you book some additional nights prior to the trip's start. This afternoon, meet your group at 5 pm in the hotel lobby for an important welcome meeting. Afterwards, take an evening orientation walk with your leader around Zurich to take in the river and lakefront by night.

Day 2: Lucerne

Location: lucerne, meals included: breaksfast.

This morning, get a taste of the world-renowned Swiss rail system – efficient and punctual – as you head to Lucerne, a small city known for its mountainous backdrop on the pristine Lake Lucerne. The city is a popular destination for those visiting central Switzerland thanks to its proximity to many outdoor activities, its breathtaking natural beauty and historic architecture. On a walking tour with your leader, take a walk past 15th-century frescoed houses and across covered wooden bridges and climb to the top of the medieval towers along the city walls for spectacular views of this picturesque city and its surroundings. In the tiny streets of the old town (Altstadt), there’s often a craft market and dozens of shops full of unique handmade goods. Optional Activities: - Lucerne - Spreuer Bridge - Free - Lucerne - Church of St Leodegar - Free - Lucerne - Swiss Museum of Transport

Day 3: Lucerne / Mt Pilatus

Location: lucerne / mt pilatus.

It's tour time! Hop on the Golden Pilatus tour – a roundtrip journey across Lake Lucerne to the summit of Mt Pilatus and back to town via boat, rail and gondola. From the shores of the Reuss river in Lucerne, hop on a steamboat ride along the lake to Alpnachstad, where you'll board the steepest cogwheel railway in the world, which takes you to the summit of Mt Pilatus at 2132 metres. Walk up to the various viewpoints or just park yourself on the panoramic viewing platform and enjoy some lunch (and perhaps even a yodelling or alphorn demonstration if you're lucky). From here, travel down the other side of the mountain via gondola. Opt to walk back to the city centre or hop aboard a public bus for an evening at your leisure. Included Activities: - Lucerne - Boat Cruise & Mt Pilatus Golden Circle Tour

Day 4-5: Jungfrau Region

Location: jungfrau region.

Today, travel to the Jungfrau Region of the Swiss Alps and enjoy a couple of free days in this picturesque mountain paradise. From your homebase in the valley village of Lauterbrunnen, you've got a tonne of optional activities to choose from. With trains and cable car routes throughout the valley, it's quite easy to access viewpoints and hikes of all levels from the valley floor to mountain peaks. You could also visit Trummelbach Falls – Europe's largest subterranean waterfalls whose powerful glacier waters have carved a slot canyon through the mountainside. You might also opt to ride the rails from Lauterbrunnen through the villages of Wengen and Kleine Scheidegg to board the train to Jungfrauroch, aka the Top of Europe, home to the highest railway station in Europe at nearly 3500 metres. Interlaken and Grindelwald are easy day trips, too. Happy exploring! Optional Activities: - Interlaken - Jungfraujoch (The Top of Europe) - Interlaken - Schilthorn Mountain - Interlaken - Trummelbach Falls - Jungfrau region self-guided hike - Free

Visit the famous Zytglogge - Bern Clock. On a guided tour, examine the gears and apparatus of the old clock, which dates back to the 15th century, with many original parts still in operation. Watch the perfectly timed figurines closely and don't miss out on the panoramic view of Bern from the top. In the evening, why not get some of your crew together to explore the food and drink scene in Bern – from typical Swiss dishes to worldwide cuisine, Bern is a great place for dining. Included Activities

  • TRANSPORT IN EUROPE
  • Half the fun of travel is the travelling itself, that's why we like to travel the local way – whether that means mingling with commuters on a local train, watching the scenery roll by from the window of a long distance bus, arriving on a high speed train in the city centre of your next destination, or navigating each city's public transport system. In Europe, you are guaranteed to travel by genuine local public transport wherever possible, which puts you right in the centre of the action.
  • SWISS TRAINS
  • On this trip you will be predominantly travelling by train. Swiss trains are most likely the best in Europe, clean, comfortable, and, you guessed it, punctual. Some of them will have restaurant carriages, but all of them have toilets. You will also be able to charge your phone or camera on the train as well (as long as you have the right adapter with you). And what is guaranteed, are the best views you can ever imagine.
  • The style of accommodation indicated in the day-to-day itinerary is a guideline only and may change. On some occasions, alternative arrangements may need to be made due to the lack of availability of rooms in our preferred accommodation. In these cases, we will use a similar standard of accommodation.
  • Throughout the trip, we request that our properties prepare rooms in time for our arrival, especially if we're arriving prior to normal check-in time. However, this isn't always possible which means we won't be able to check-in immediately on arrival at some hotels. Instead, we can store our luggage and explore our new destination or on some trips, have use of shared day rooms until all rooms are available.
  • OCCASIONAL ALTERNATIVE ACCOMMODATION
  • The style of accommodation indicated in the day-to-day itinerary is a guideline. On rare occasions, alternative arrangements may need to be made due to the lack of availability of rooms in our usual accommodation. A similar standard of accommodation will be used in these instances.
  • TWIN SHARE BASIS
  • Accommodation on this trip is on a twin/multishare basis. We pair up solo travellers with another traveller of the same gender as per the gender marker on each of their passports. Please note there may be times where facilities will be shared rather than ensuite and rare occasions when you share a room with passengers travelling on different Intrepid trips than your own.
  • CHECK-IN TIME
  • Throughout the trip we request that our hotels prepare rooms in time for our arrival, especially if we're arriving prior to normal check-in time. However this isn't always possible which means we won't be able to check-in immediately on arrival at some hotels. Instead, we can store our luggage and explore our new destination.
  • PRE/POST TRIP ACCOMMODATION
  • If you've purchased pre-trip or post-trip accommodation (if available), you may be required to change rooms from your trip accommodation for these extra nights.
  • Your accommodation may not always have private en suite facilities or air-conditioning. European hotels generally don't provide kettles or fridges.

Is this trip right for you.

Some of Switzerland’s best scenery is found on walks, which can be quite steep and long. While this trip itself doesn't require a high level of fitness, it’s essential to be at least moderately fit if you want to take part in all activities. During the trip, you have the option to hike the trails in the Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau region. The primary means of transportation on this trip is by train. Hotels in Europe often don't have double beds, but rather two single beds that can be pushed together. On this trip you must pack as lightly as possible because you will be expected to carry your own bag and although you won't be required to walk long distances with your luggage (max 30 minutes), we strongly recommend keeping the weight under 15kg / 33lb.

Reviews of this Operator

North american adventure.

This was my first international solo trip, but I never felt “alone” - there was always someone to go shopping, hike, or grab a quick bite with. The itinerary was a great balance between organized activities, while still allowing free time for exploring. Each location was unique and charming in its own way. Spending the night in the holy city of Moulay Idriss and wandering the winding streets of Chefchaouen were especially memorable. Thank you Mustapha and Intrepid for an incredible adventure!

Cambodia Discovery

The overall experience was fantastic. V good tour leader. All places visited had something special to do or see. I would book a tour with this company again. Only one negative tour hub is not I repeat not available to contact direct by phone.

Explore Southern Africa

Best trip ever was, 2 things I didn't like the black mamba stop was wasting day and village ,so 2 night I think was just wasting, I could do 2 days in Kruger, and one more night in delta

Amazing Guatemala and beyond tour with Intrepid

Did Guatemala and beyond trip in November 22. It was amazing, we were so well looked after by our guide Aura. She was very knowledgeable and during our bus trips she gave us the history of the 4 countries. The border crossings can be tricky but handled very well by our guide. We saw all the most interesting and beautiful places. The hotels were lovely comfortable colonial style. I will travel with intrepid again

Central American Journey

Very enjoyable, good paced Tour. Tour Leader, Choko was helpful, knowledgeable and extremely informative.

Wonderful Croatian tour

Our tour guide,Tamara, was the highlight of our Explore Croatia tour. She was knowledgeable, organized, and so kind and fun. Croatia is a beautiful country. I loved the people, the scenery, the food, the history. I hope to go back one day. Intrepid was perfect for me. There was group time and there was plenty of free time. It wasn’t a luxury tour but all of our accommodations were clean and safe. The dinner in Hvar was SO special!

One Week In Costa Rica

The trip was amazing, everything was well planned out & there wasn't any issues. The tour guide was very friendly and made the experience fun. During the trip I didn't have to worry about safety as we were never put in harms way. I would definitely recommend & do again.

North Morocco Adventure

Touring the beautiful North of Morocco I learned far more than I’d anticipated in this 9 day tour. Interesting sights to see, with knowledgeable local guides, this tour provides a great balance of exposure to a different culture with ample time for relaxation. Chefchaouen is an absolute highlight, & not a place many Morocco trips of this kind go to. Loved it!

Essential Morocca

Essential Morocco was an absolute dream. Every single day had such informative walking tours and tours of local facilities. Whether it was dinner with a local family or visiting a pottery factory, I learned so much about Moroccan culture. The accommodations were safe and I felt secure the entire 11 days. This trip wouldn’t have been the same without one person. That person is Youssef. If you are coming to Morocco with Intrepid and you don’t request Youssef, you’re doing it wrong. Words cannot describe how incredible of a guide he is. There were 3 of us on our trip of 18-29 year olds and he made us all feel so welcome and safe all the time. Whether that is cracking jokes on long drives or giving us the itinerary for the next day, Youssef ensured we felt respected and seen.

Cambodia Adventure

Absolutely superb leader - knowledgeable. fun, safety conscious. Group of 15 travellers from 5 countries who bonded into a solid team. In addition to a fantastic itinerary, our leader’s love of karaoke made the trip unforgettable. It even inspired a song written as a tribute to him.

Vietnam Classic

My husband and I went on the classics 10 day trip in Vietnam with an Intrepid group. This was the most interesting and incredible experience I have had. It covered all of Vietnams must sees and sight seeing. The group of people in our team were all lovely and felt like family/ friends by the end of the trip. The tour guide ‘Duc’ was professional, knowledgeable and always helpful. We continued on the to start another intrepid trip in Cambodia. I would highly recommend this trip for anyone wanting to see Vietnams highlights. 10/10 for our tour guide Duc.

Thank you for sharing your experience, Brenda on your Classic Vietnam trip. We are delighted to hear that you had a group who all bonded so well and a tour leader who was professional and knowledgeable which meant you had such an enjoyable time exploring the wonders of Vietnam. We hope you enjoyed Cambodia just as much and we look forward to welcoming you on another Intrepid adventure in the not so distant future.

Our tour guide Anh Voung made all the difference

Our tour guide Anh Voung made all the difference. She was extremely well organized, disciplined and was able to make a cohesive group among the small group tour participants. Also, she knew thoroughly the history of the places we visited. We were able to see Vietnam through her eyes. That made all the difference.

Date of experience : March 14, 2024

Thank you, Michael for your sharing your experience with us. We are delighted that you enjoyed exploring Vietnam and that your tour leader Anh Voung made your trip extra special. We look forward to welcoming you on another Intrepid adventure in the not so distant future. All the best, Intrepid Travel

Okavango Delta

Myself and my partner done our first trip with Intrepid in August 2023 from Johannesburg to Victoria Falls with Okavango Delta highlight. Everything was very well organised. The guides were very knowledgeable and friendly. The other guests were all very friendly. We would have found it difficult to put together a trip like this by ourselves. We will definitely consider doing another trip Intrepid and we would highly recommend them.

Date of experience : August 12, 2023

Thank you for taking the time to post our review and for your recommendation to others. We are delighted to know that being your first Intrepid experience you found the trip to be well organised and your guides were knowledgeable and friendly. We hope to welcome you on another of our adventures soon.

Our first trip with Intrepid did not…

Our first trip with Intrepid did not disappoint. We had a great guide who was both informative and helpful. He fitted into the group and nothing was too much trouble. Would highly recommend

Thanks for your lovely review Deborah. It's wonderful to read that you enjoyed your Intrepid trip an that your tour leader was able to enhance your experience! We hope to welcome you back soon!

Good - unless there are long bus rides.

I have now done four trips with Intrepid and can generally recommend them. Most guides are enthusiastic and speak good English, and the level of organisation is good. However, if your trip involves long distances to travel by bus be aware that Intrepid, in general, provides very poor quality in this department. I recently returned from a trip to Mexico, where the travel style was decribed as "comfort". Our bus was, however, the very definition of UNcomfortable. They mention in the trip notes that the bus may feel cramped, but not that it is old, has very limited suspension, and that a vast majority of seats will not accomodate people over 180 cm. I am 183 cm and returned from Mexico with knees that still ache from the experience. The quality of the bus was outrageous, and all travelers agreed on this. We saw buses of the same size, but of better quality, on the way so they do exist. That Intepid does not feel the need to renew its fleet of buses can only be described as stingy.

Hey Anders, thanks for getting in touch with us. Your loyalty is greatly appreciated, and we're happy to hear that you're pleased with our expert guides. We value your input and would love to delve deeper into your feedback about our fleet. Please feel free to reach out to our Customer Care team at [email protected] with your booking reference number and so we can examine this more closely.

Money robbing Intrepid.

Terrible company to deal with, slow customer service and when I had my flights cancelled for my trip. I mentioned that I could no longer go on my trip I was notified that they do not do refunds. I now have lost out on over $1000 that I will never be able to access again for a trip that I had given over 6 months notice.

Date of experience : March 18, 2024

Hi Calum, we are very sorry to hear about your experience. A member of the sales team will be in touch to discuss this with you, alternatively you are welcome to contact us directly at [email protected] and we can look into this further.

Delhi to Goa

The whole trip just worked really well. I think this was also due to our fantastic guide, Gajraj Singh. He pitched the tour perfectly, was very knowledgeable about the places we visitedand occasionally slightly changed things to our benefit. The hotels and travel arrangements were as described and removed any stress.

Date of experience : February 06, 2024

Thank you for taking the time to post your review. It’s great to know the trip worked well and that your tour loader Gajrag Singh contributed to your enjoyment. I’m sure he will be delighted to receive this feedback. We hope you will find another of our itineraries to your linking and we can welcome you back on another of our adventures soon.

I’ll choose Intrepid Everytime

I’ve done about 6 tours with intrepid. My favorite are the Camping African tours. Very efficient way to see off the beaten path in different counties. Very well organized although I think some of the accommodations needs review. Team leaders, chefs and drivers have all been 10/10. Their customer service is very responsive when answering my queries about visas, food, airport connections ect. I travel at ease knowing I chose intrepid.

Date of experience : November 28, 2023

Hey Jeeleigh! Wow, 6 tours, that's amazing! Thanks for travelling with us. So happy you've had such great experiences. Thank you for your note about the accommodation - if you'd like to send us an email about your concerns regarding the accommodations, we can for sure pass them on to the right department for you! We can't wait to welcome you on your next trip :)

Explore Vietnam

This trip is challenging and sometimes tiring but so rewarding. You see parts of the real Vietnam off the tourist trail, meet real people and hear their stories. Amazing value for money with good, clean accommodation. Travelling through the country on the overnight train with the locals was a fantastic experience. Great variety of cities visited and all the organisation went very smoothly. Lots of additional excursions are offered which are all worth doing - they added to the trip immensely. This was our first Intrepid trip and I’m sure it won’t be our last.

Date of experience : February 07, 2024

Thank you for taking the time to post your review and for sharing your experience with others. It's good to know that although you found the trip challenging and tiring a times, it was also so rewarding. We do hope you will find another itinerary to your liking and we can welcome you on another of our adventures soon.

So glad we chose them for our first small group tour.

Had an amazing trip with Intrepid on the South Morocco Discovery Tour. We'd never been with Intrepid before so didn't really know what to expect. But it was fantastic from start to finish - quick replies to our queries before departure and then the trip itself. Great group of people, amazing Mo, our group leader and we were lucky enough to have 3 other Mo's. The itinerary was pretty full on, with lots of time in the bus but scenery, the stops and the banter on the bus made it part of the experience. We saw so much, from rainy Atlas Mountains to the Sahara Desert, ancient walled cities to seaside fishing town, and of course Marakkech. Loved every minute - the people, the places and being with Intrepid meant we didn't have to worry about anything. Will definitely use Intrepid for our next trip - so glad we chose them for our first small group tour.

South India revealed

South India revealed, from 02.02 - 17.02.24 We thought the South Indian trip from Trivandrum to Goa was really good! The tour guide Thilip was extremely personable and constantly looked after us, even when no activities were planned. Explained everything and gave valuable tips, took us to local restaurants to eat and described the food before ordering. The journey with different means of transport, bus, TUK TUK, train and sleeping car was also stress-free with Thilip. The accommodations were good and clean according to the price/performance ratio. Since we ate a lot in local restaurants and also used public transport, we had many nice encounters with Indians. The houseboat trip on the backwaters with homestay was one of the highlights. Sightseeing in Verkala, Kochi, Madurai, Mysore and Hampi were great and well organized. Of course, our small travel group of 10 people also contributed to the whole trip being good and harmonious. We can highly recommend this trip, but you should also be willing to adjust to the country and its people!! Heino and Hannelore Müller, Münster, Germany

Date of experience : March 12, 2024

Hi Heino and Hannelore, thank you for your wonderful review! We're so delighted that you had such a wonderful time on your South India Revealed trip with Intrepid and experienced all the delights that India has to offer. Engaging with the local people is one of the joys of travel and we're so pleased that your trip afforded you plenty of opportunities to do so. Thank you also for your kind words about your tour leader Thilip. Our leaders are the hear of Intrepid and it's great to know that they were able to enhance your experience. We can't wait to welcome you on another Intrepid trip!

Exhausting and Exhilarating

We have travelled with Intrepid in Japan, Eastern Europe and now India. On each occasion the tours were well organised, and the guides professional, friendly and great communicators. Our recent Premium trip to India involved early starts and long days but those factors allowed us to see much more than we would have if we had travelled solo. We were introduced to many cultural experiences which added to the overall itinerary. Our guide orchestrated many seamless vehicular changes from bus to car to tuk tuk which allowed us to travel to and from temples, forts, palaces, etc, as efficiently as possible.

Thank you for sharing your experience with us, Alan, on what sounds like an incredible Indian adventure. We are so pleased that you felt you got most out of such an exhilarating country by being introduced to many cultural experiences and covering a vast distance. Where will your next adventure be? We look forward to welcoming you on another trip soon.

Gorillas and Game Parks

Gorillas and Game Parks was an awesome experience and trip. The Intrepid crew was great and very professional. The driving times were quite long, longer than listed, but we stopped every few hours for a break. The tents were in great shape and comfortable.

Hi Michael, thank you for your review. We are pleased to know that you had a fantastic overall experience with us, and your feedback of your tent in particular is great to hear. We do our best to have accurate travel times on our trip notes, thank you for highlighting that for our team to check on. We hope the time with the gorillas was just as magical as you had imagined! With best wishes for your next adventure.

Premium price basic accommodation

I booked a premium trip to India because I wanted good accommodation and the itinerary looked amazing. The itinerary did not disappoint, unfortunately the guide and accommodation let the trip down massively. One of the rooms was filthy, another had a missing window pane, that the guide tried to pass off as a feature! Too many of the hotels had problems with the drains that made spending time in the room unpleasant. The guide was reactive when he needed to be but was mostly focusing on his phone and getting to the end of the walk/activities as soon as he could. I had a good time because the group and places we visited were great but I won't be rushing to do another trip with intrepid anytime soon.

Thank you for taking the time to post a review. We are disappointed to learn of your experience and that although you had a good time, you had a good group and the itinerary didn’t disappoint, you will not be rushing to book with Intrepid again. Your feedback is very important, and we would welcome the chance to discuss your comments around your leader and your accommodation in more detail. Wonderful trip to Costa Rica

We chose Intrepid for our Costa Rica trip February 2024 after a great trip to Namibia with Intrepid in May 2023. Definitely an intrepid trip! As well as seeing a good bit of Costa Rica--Caribbean, rain forest, cloud forest, Pacific beach--we went tubing, rafting, snorkeling, kayaking through a mangrove swamp and zip lining over the cloud forest. (All very professionally run.) We particularly liked Intrepid's use of family-run businesses. The guide was super organized and very knowledgeable about the areas visited and the plants and wildlife we were seeing.

Date of experience : January 28, 2024

Hello Inge, thank you for such an excellent overview of your tour to Costa Rica! We appreciate your recognition of our local business partners, and we always hope to contribute to local economies that will have a larger impact on the communities we visit. Costa Rica is indeed, a nature lovers dream and we look forward to having you along with us again in future. Stay well.

Premium Intrepid India experience.a few words our India experience…

In a few words our India experience with Intrepid Travel was superb! Our guide was an exceptional human being with a wealth of knowledge which made the trip so much easier and exciting for the travellers! We visited the most amazing and interesting places, many I had never heard of but by the time I left I knew so much more about them. Our accommodation, food and travel were great and thanks to Intrepid our whole trip was fabulous. Certainly recommended!!

Fabulous organised trip to Sri Lanka

Fabulous organised trip to Sri Lanka. Would definitely book through them again. The tour guide was so knowledgeable and took us to places that we would never have seen on our own. Some of the hotels were a little basic but perfectly fine. Definitely a 5* experience.

Date of experience : February 02, 2024

Thank you for your lovely review, Denise. We are delighted to hear that you had such an enjoyable time exploring Sri Lanka and that your tour leader took your group to interesting places, off the beaten track. We are always so pleased to hear when customers would love to travel with us again, we look forward to hopefully seeing you on another one of our adventures soon. All the best, Intrepid Travel

Very disappointing, incompetent and slow

I wanted to write something about my trip to New Zealand. Unfortunately, it never happened. I found Intrepid very unprofessional all the way through. I had to transfer the entire amount (a huge sum) before they even started an inquiry. My request for a single room could not be accommodated and I was offered the trip on a twin-share basis. I confirmed this within a day. Three days later I received the first email saying that the trip was no longer available. What could I do but accept? So I gave them my bank details to transfer the money back. Nothing happened for another three days and I received a similar email saying that the trip was no longer available a second time. I was offered a later date. After waiting five working days for any sign of the transfer, I tried live chat again. I was assured that the transfer would be initiated, but that it could take up to two weeks!!!! These are absolutely impossible and customer unfriendly business practices. While Intrepid is keeping my money back, I am now unable to organise the trip myself. I feel quite betrayed and will not consider or recommend Intrepid again.

Dear Carola, thank you for taking the time to post your review. We pride ourselves on our customer service, so we're very sorry that this was your booking experience. Please reach out to us at [email protected] with your booking number so that we can assist you further.

Experience locals on an Intrepid tour

We have just come back from Morocco, completing our 9th Intrepid tour. We love the way Intrepid find interesting ways to link us with locals. In the Morocco Uncovered tour, for example, we visited a Berber tent on a cold rainy day. The home was toasty warm, the Berber shared his life (so different to ours in suburban Australia), music and love of the land. It was an experience I will never forget. On the same tour, my partners birthday was celebrated in a local house where the family had made all the ingredients for the meal! In the past we have happened (ie not part of the tour) on a circumcision party (Turkey), weddings (Sri Lanka, Turkey, Myanmar), developed an understanding of Jordan as the crossroad of culture, and sharing deep fried locusts (Cambodia). If you want to get to know what it's like to live in a country, meet some locals and have a great time, go Intrepid. Their organisation, logistics and guide are top class.

Date of experience : February 05, 2024

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. It's great to know that being a first time Intrepid traveller, you had an amazing trip and will be booking with Intrepid again. We hope you will find another itinerary to your liking and we can welcome you on another of our adventures soon.

Intrepid what can I say Excellent Tour

Intrepid what can I say I will say it’s the best organised trip I have ever been on I was reluctant to go on an organised tour reason being I like to do my own thing This gave everything I wanted to down time by ones self ,but most of all the companionship with others on the tour friendships we now have made but most of all the tour guide who went out of her way to make sure things were done to absolute perfection I would recommend this tour and guide and one could only hope I come across her once again for a tour leader “ Too travel is to Live “

Date of experience : February 15, 2024

Hey Jenice!! Wow we're so happy to hear you had such a great experience on your recent trip with us! So happy you made some life long friends and some wonderful memories. We can't wait to welcome you on another trip :)

intrepid tours switzerland

Explore this dreamy part of the world at your own pace. Start with sophisticated Zurich and then see Switzerland the best way, on world-famous scenic train journeys through the Swiss Alps. Discover idyllic alpine landscapes, snow-capped peaks, charming mountain villages and luxury resort destinations.

Day 1 Zurich

Grüezi! Welcome to Switzerland. After your arrival at the airport, make your own way to the hotel and enjoy your first day at leisure. As a lakeside "metropolis of experiences", with a magnificent view of the snow‐capped Alps on the horizon, Zurich offers a unique mixture of attractions.

Start with the beauty of the city’s natural surroundings. If you feel like getting a better view, take the train to the summit of Uetliberg Mountain. From the station, it’s a short walk to the peak and the scenery is incredible over Zurich, the lake and the Alps. Or if you’re in the Old Town and fancy a vantage point, you can walk up Lindenhof Hill for sweeping views over the city.

Check in: Passengers will be arriving at various times throughout the day. If arriving prior to standard check-in time, which is generally 3pm local time, you are welcome to leave your luggage with hotel reception and explore your surroundings until check-in becomes available, as there are generally no scheduled activities on Day 1 of the itinerary. The hotel may grant early check-in, however this is strictly subject to availability and at the hotel’s discretion.

Day 2 Zurich

Wake up to a delicious Swiss breakfast, then take a stroll along the famous Bahnhofstrasse — Zurich's shopping paradise. A quick detour will lead you to the narrower cobbled streets of Zurich's Old Town and its smaller, independent artisan shops. Use your included 24-hour Zurich Card for local transport and various discounts across the city. Be sure to not miss the picturesque waterfront promenades!

Day 3 Zurich Lucerne

After breakfast, transfer by rail to Lucerne in Central Switzerland, situated in an enviable location surrounded by a stunning lake and mountain panorama. The historic town of Lucerne attracts visitors globally with its well-preserved old town, countless shops and restaurants. A visit to Chapel Bridge, which has stood the test of time as a traditional crossing for locals, is one of many highlights that are sure to impress.

Day 4 Lucerne Flüelen Gotthard Panorama Express Lugano

This morning, the Gotthard Panorama Express takes you from the heart of Switzerland, with a journey through Lake Lucerne on a paddle steamer boat.  From Flüelen, travel by first-class panoramic train to Lugano, a picturesque lakeside town in Switzerland’s Italian-speaking Ticino region.

Use the provided guest card to take full advantage of local transport and explore nearby villages, such as the pretty village of Morcote.

Day 5 Lugano Tirano Bernina Express St. Moritz

Board the Bernina Express bus after breakfast, and enjoy a scenic drive to Italy-based Tirano where you join the Bernina Express panoramic train across the border back to Switzerland. You will travel over circular viaducts and pass through winding tunnels, with highlights including the Brusio Circular Viaduct and a photo stop at Alp Grüm.

Arrive in St. Moritz, a luxury alpine resort town in Switzerland’s Engadin valley, and spend the rest of the day at leisure. This luxury alpine resort town, a favourite for celebrities and royals, is surely one of the world’s most famous winter sports resorts. This was the first mountain village in the country to have a ski school, a tram and electric lighting. The Winter Olympics have been held here twice. It’s a renowned ski destination.

Day 6 St. Moritz

A full day awaits to explore St. Moritz, where guests from all over the world appreciate the modern Alpine lifestyle. Take advantage of your included guest card to visit the local area. We suggest the nearby mountains of Muottas Murgal or Diavolezza for incredible views that are not to be missed. Various sights including the leaning tower, a remnant of the Mauritius Church from around 1500, or the Segantini Museum, offer unique insight into the city’s fascinating history.

Day 7 St. Moritz Glacier Express Zermatt

Ride the world‐famous Glacier Express to Zermatt today, a gorgeous village near the Italian border. Be enthralled by Switzerland’s spectacular scenery, thanks to oversized, panoramic windows that make for an unforgettable experience. Along the deep Rhone valley, the Glacier Express travels through an incredibly fascinating part of the Alps. The route famously takes you through 91 tunnels and 291 bridges, offering unrivalled views. Make sure to have your camera handy! Optionally, you may wish to dine at your seat with a delicious 3-course meal served on your table (additional charges apply).

Day 8 Zermatt

Zermatt lies at the foot of the iconic Matterhorn peak. The town's touristic development is closely linked to what is arguably the world's most famous mountain. This car‐free resort offers guests an abundance of activities such as visits to the local mountains of Gornergrat or the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise. It is also home to the highest open-air cog railway in Europe.

Day 9 Zermatt Montreux

Continue by train to Montreux, nestled between steep hills and the lakeside of Lake Geneva. The town's promenade is lined with flowers, sculptures, Mediterranean trees and grand Belle Époque buildings. Nearby attractions include the medieval island castle, Chateau de Chillon and the vineyards of the Lavaux region.

Day 10 Montreux GoldenPass Express Wilderswil

Your journey continues by train on the GoldenPass Express through the wild and romantic Pays d'Enhaut, complete with scenic villages and crystal-clear lakes at every corner.

Interlaken is a laidback resort town, presided over by three mighty mountains, Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. It makes a great base from which to explore the Bernese Oberland. Unprecedented views of the Swiss Alps give an impression of what is to come during your stay.

Höheweg, the main promenade of Interlaken, is lovely for a stroll. It runs from Lake Brienz to Lake Thun, with flower gardens and parks on one side allowing for a view of the Bernese Alps. On the other side you’ll find high-end hotels, boutiques, cafes and the casino.

Day 11 Wilderswil Jungfraujoch Wilderswil

Your penultimate day in Switzerland packs another highlight! This morning you will embark on a self-guided excursion to the Jungfraujoch, also known as the highest railway station in Europe. You may choose to go via Grindelwald Terminal on the technical marvel that is Eiger Express cable car, or take the traditional route by train from Grindelwald via Kleine Scheidegg. Highlights include the world’s highest Lindt Chocolate Shop and the Ice Palace with its impressive ice sculptures.

Day 12 Wilderswil Zurich

Today marks the end of your magnificent and unforgettable tour through Switzerland. We hope you have thoroughly enjoyed your inspiring trip.

Your train ticket includes the rail transfer from Wilderswil to Zurich airport, allowing you the flexibility to select a suitable connection for your departure flight. Trains via Lucerne typically depart every hour.

Want to explore Lake Geneva by boat?

Cruise Lake Geneva

On a sunny day, there’s no better way to tour Switzerland than by water. Gaze at the country from its largest lake and learn something new about its shores, choosing a historic paddle boat, passenger ferry or cocktail-sipping sunset cruise.

Discover the 15th-century vineyards of Cave Champ de Clos

The Conne family have been producing wine for centuries in the heart of the UNESCO heritage region of Lavaux. Be hypnotised by rows of terraced vineyards then retire to the stone cellar to taste the vintages they have produced.

Take a horse carriage ride through the Alps and Rosegg Valley

The alps are home to an endlessly romantic trail that can be taken on horse carriage ride. Rug up in blankets for this fairytale experience through alpine forests, arriving at a destination of snow capped mountains and an impressive glacier. The kind of views imagined when dreaming up a Switzerland trip.

Ride up to Stans by Switzerland's oldest mountain railway

Start in Lucerne and travel along tracks from the 1890s, watching villages and views pass by in the window. With wildflower meadows in the summer and snow dusted trees in winter, you will unwind as you wind around the mountains for 30 minutes before reaching the top.

Travel to the heart of Switzerland, Interlaken

The unassuming town of Interlaken is the perfect base to connect with the soul of Switzerland. Explore over 700 hikes which roam into the mountains from your doorstep, with charming isolated villages found sitting between them.

Our top 5 things to do in Switzerland

We'll take you through the pristine natural beauty of this country, with a trip that's filled with moments of awe. Lakes, grapevines and alpine forests prove it's not just the hills that are alive in Switzerland.

Swiss National Museum

There is a reason this is Switzerland's most frequently visited museum of cultural history. Inside, you will immerse in the past and present through some 840,000 objects. From bronze Age bowls to silver knight’s armour, nowhere else will deliver such a rich and comprehensive insight into the Swiss.

Lake Geneva

Charlie Chaplin museum

The property where Charlie Chaplin spent his last years provides an intimate glimpse into the iconic entertainer's life and work. Be moved by a walk through the vast estate, where you will marvel at his original bowler hat and boots, hear tales from friends and touch painstakingly replicated movie sets.

Zentrum Paul Klee

The namesake of this museum is one of the 20th century's most important artists. Step into the space to quietly take in his artworks, you might find yourself lost in the famous cubism inspired 'Insula dulcamara' or colourful jigsaw that the German-Swiss genius was most famous for.

Best museums in Switzerland

There's more to this landlocked country than army knives and chocolate. With Trafalgar, you will gain a deeper understanding of Switzerland through these must-visit museums.

Once a farmers’ breakfast, Rösti is now a plate popular amongst the Swiss. One bite into this crisp baked potato and you will be hooked. Luckily, the country's many regions boast their own versions, offering an excuse to sample many during your tour of Switzerland.

There is more to this classic fare than dipping bread into a pot of melted cheese. It’s a sacred pastime. To the Swiss, fresh bread and bubbling creamy Gruyere is incomplete without one vital ingredient: good company. Indulge in authentic fondue in Switzerland in the company of new friends.

Swiss chocolate

Chocolate aficionados will find no shortage of pleasure in the smooth chocolate of Switzerland. The birthplace of Lindt, Toblerone, Mövenpick and more, a banquet of cocoa will be enjoyed here in the name of culture.

Best food in Switzerland

Baked potato, melted cheese and genuine chocolate. The culinary delights of Switzerland were designed with only the pleasure of taste in mind, and it's an indulgence Trafalgar is only too happy to share with you.

What to pack for Switzerland

People packing for a tour

Even in summer, layers are vital in Switzerland. Temperatures differ throughout through the country and can get particularly crisp in the higher mountains.

A good quality camera

In a place known for pinch me moments, it would be remiss to forget something more than just a smartphone to capture them all.

Swiss Francs

Switzerland may be at the core of Europe, but this country abandoned the Euro many years ago. Though you can still use them in some larger establishments, but it's better to arm yourself with plenty of Francs so you're never caught short.

A phrasebook

A phrasebook with the national languages of German, French and Italian is essential on a tour of Switzerland. If you really can’t spare the space, download them to your Google Translate app offline.

Walking shoes

If your trip is likely to see you traversing the dynamic landscapes of Switzerland, a pair of sturdy walking shoes or hiking boots should be on the packing list.

Intrepid Launches Women-Led Tours In Saudi Arabia

Jesse Chase-Lubitz , Skift

April 4th, 2024 at 12:50 PM EDT

Intrepid’s new women-led tours in Saudi Arabia are about “focusing on the hosts, not just the travelers.”

Jesse Chase-Lubitz

Intrepid Travel has announced a women’s-only tour in Saudi Arabia — led by women, for women.

The tour represents an effort to sidestep the luxury-focused travel industry in the country while giving travelers a more authentic experience and supporting the booming female labor force.

The launch follows several years of progress for Saudi women, who gained the right to drive in 2018 and to be tour guides in 2019. As the country seeks to become a leading travel destination, the percentage of women who make up the tourism workforce has skyrocketed to 45%.

“This shift had one positive effect, which is that it gave more rights to women,” said Zina Bencheikh, the managing director of EMEA for Intrepid Travel. “[This tour] effectively means that we can speak to women and we can meet women who own businesses, women guides, women who run restaurants.”

The 12-day adventure will bring travelers to female-owned establishments. “I think the beauty of traveling this way is to focus on the hosts, not just the travelers,” said Bencheikh.

Going Local, Not Luxury

The tour involves a family-owned citrus farm, rock formations, and giant tombs. Travelers will visit the holy site Medina, take a tour of Al-Balad in Jeddah with Saudi’s first female guide, and go on a cruise in the Red Sea.

Intrepid partnered with a local agent, Sara Omar, to design the trip. Omar has previously focused on planning trips for Saudi women to experience other parts of the world. Now, she’s helping Intrepid bring the world to Saudi women.

“A lot of people think Saudi women are unable to do anything, that we’re not educated, that we don’t work. Meeting the locals is the best way to understand what the lifestyle is really like,” Omar said, according to Intrepid’s press release.

The tour also taps into something that has been difficult for tour operators to breach in Saudi Arabia – local engagement. While the country has marketed themselves as a luxury destination, many travelers want a more authentic experience.

“I think the country has positioned their tourism in one part of the travel industry, which is that kind of more mainstream luxurious experience,” said Bencheikh. “But in my opinion, they are kind of missing the point. In all the reports we see that what people want is interaction with the local people.”

The Saudi tour is the latest in a series of women-led tours. Others include tours to India, Nepal, Morocco, Jordan and Pakistan, all of which have grown in popularity since their inception.

These tours align with the travel experiences trends Intrepid is seeing, which show that female travelers above 50 are increasingly looking for solo meaningful experiences in lesser visited countries.

Intrepid’s women-led trekking tour in Morocco launched in 2018 and now has 20 departures per year. “If you think about the economic impact for those women,” said Bencheikh. “Some of them never worked before and now they have a job that is paid for by doing something they enjoy.”

Bencheikh said that Intrepid is scoping for locations for new tours, and may have its eyes on Asia next.
