Nov 29, 2021 DEADMEN & DRAGONS

Originally aired: saturday, december 18 2021, replay available until friday, december 25, for deadmen & dragons ultimate and platinum meet & greet ticket holders..

Plus special guest: Fit For An Autopsy

Part two of the two-part series, Deadmen & Dragons, is the second installment from Trivium’s first livestream series from “The Hangar,” their brand new HQ.

“Deadmen & Dragons is the celebration of the last two years — two albums, The Hangar, the Metal Tour of the Year, and of course A Light Or A Distant Mirror. The moment we knew that touring was off the table in 2020, we shifted focus back to the creative process. This stream is the closing of this unexpected chapter of Trivium and the beginning of a new one full of many exciting possibilities with The Hangar.” Paolo Gregoletto

TRIVIUM – “Deadmen and Dragons” Livestream Event (December 18th, 2021)

trivium deadmen and dragons tour setlist

Nothing jump-starts the evolutionary process quite like pure, unabashed necessity, and it would be the understatement of the century to suggest that the events over the past 2 years have altered the way bands reach their audiences. Case and point, metal upstarts turned icons Trivium , whom managed to field a duo of highly impressive studio LPs in the midst of the ongoing Covid lock-downs, and have shown zero signs of slowing down regardless of the highly tentative state of the touring scene. In fact, this quartet’s extensive work in the live streaming medium over the past decade or so has made them quite capable in translating the high energy performances that their concert events have been known to feature into the virtual setting, as their rather impressive rendition of their highly acclaimed 2011 album “In Waves” demonstrated the previous week. That very same combination of explosive impact and militaristic precision would be reprised with a de facto “Part 2” event in “Deadmen And Dragons,” albeit in a format that is a tad closer to a typical one hour set.

True to its predecessor, this event had all of the attributes of a typical live show (save the crowd noise), including the brief and necessarily laconic opening set, courtesy of deathcore trustees and fellow travelers Fit For An Autopsy . By no means slouches at their craft given their extensive discography going back to the beginning of the previous decade, their showing would prove a bit more by-the-numbers compared to their prior sub-20 minute showcase. Much of this lay in the straightforward character of the slower grooving title anthem off of 2015’s “Absolute Hope Absolute Hell” and the djent-happy crusher “Heads Will Hang” , which are nevertheless performed flawlessly and with a particularly avid zeal by helmsman and inhuman shouter Joe Badolato . Then again, another never before played entry off the upcoming “Oh, What The Future Holds” album in “In Shadows” serves to liven things up with a more thrashing and animated approach, allowing guitarists Pat Sheridan and Tim Howley to unload some impressive riff work while Josean Orta makes a formidable ruckus behind the drums.

The main event would naturally prove a less rustic affair, though still possessing that up close and personal setting that one attending a moderate size venue would expect. The nostalgia factor would prove noticeably thick during the documentary-style interview segments that would kick the performance off and function as breaks throughout the set, with Matt Heafy and his three compatriots reminiscing upon the cloud of uncertainty that hung over the entire music world during the opening days of Covid 19, which coincided with the release of 2020’s “What The Dead Men Say.” What would be recounted by each member of the band would prove both informative and heartening, most particularly when the subject of Trivium ’s “hangar” practice and performance space was covered and how it would provide the means for the band to continue bringing their hybrid style of thrash and metalcore to the masses absent touring. Indeed, one wouldn’t be far off in inferring that the very theme of this concert was the triumph of artistic ingenuity over adversity, as both of the albums being showcased were released in the midst of a world all but bereft of the traditional means of promotion.

If 2011’s In Waves marked the beginning of Trivium ’s current era of greater stylistic nuance and refinement, the dual works of “What The Dead Men Say” and “In The Court Of The Dragon” present it taken to its logical conclusion, and that would be reflected even in the somewhat unconventional manner in which both albums were presented. Though in many ways this hour long foray into recent material would feel a bit closer to a traditional live set list than the previous live stream, the heavy focus upon deep tracks and never-before-heard selections would throw a massive yet welcome curveball into things. There is a notable focus upon frenetic thrashers such as “A Crisis Of Revelation” , “Fall Into Your Hands” and “Like A Sword Over Damocles” off the latest album, which serves to blend well with the similarly fast and flashy character of “What The Dead Men Say” as an entire album, to speak nothing for the incredible display of virtuosic skill put on by each member of the fold, as even bassist Paolo Gregoletto can’t help but get his Cliff Burton on during the opener and first of the three aforementioned songs.

trivium deadmen and dragons tour setlist

To say that this performance was impressive would be to put it lightly, as one could scarcely believe that four individuals could fill an arrangement so completely. At times it could be argued that Matt Heafy was a part-time front man, as both guitarist Corey Beaulieu and Gregoletto provided almost as much vocal input into the mix. Likewise, the insanely fast and precise drumming of Alex Bent barely registered as the handiwork of a mortal man, though one might expect as much from the guy who handled the kit for such wildly technical and frenzied outfits as Brain Drill and Battlecross . Yet at the end of the day, what truly sells these songs and makes them so conducive to the stage is the delicate balancing act between melodic saccharine and sheer brutality that typifies Trivium ’s post-2010 sound, though the elaborate dance of shred going on between Beaulieu and Heafy is far from a non-factor. Whether one fancies the triumphant splendor at warp speed that is “The Ones We Leave Behind” or the nuanced journey through epic semi-balladry “The Shadow Of The Abattoir” , this is a band that practically does it all, and even when doing so for an hour barely manages to break a sweat.

TRIVIUM Set-list:

A Crisis of Revelation (Live Debut) / Fall Into Your Hands (Live Debut) / Amongst the Shadows & the Stones / The Defiant / Sickness Unto You / Bending the Arc to Fear / Like a Sword Over Damocles / The Ones We Leave Behind / No Way Back Just Through (Live Debut) / The Shadow of the Abattoir (Live Debut)

Trivium announce Deadmen And Dragons U.S. tour

Trivium announce Deadmen And Dragons U.S. tour

Trivium have announced the Deadmen And Dragons U.S. tour with Between The Buried And Me , Whitechapel and Khemmis .

This awesome bill of heavy bands will hit the States from October 2 through to November 10, with frontman Matt Heafy enthusing of his tourmates: "Between The Buried And Me are the pioneers of mixing genres well before anyone else had. BTBAM back in 2002 – on the impeccable self-titled album – showed that they were unapologetically ready to mix elements of death metal, melodic death metal, grindcore, power metal, prog, ethereal – at times beautiful – passages of melody. Their self-titled record was a massive influence on me; I was captivated by the immense mixture of so many styles. Through their combining of a vast range of sonics and soundscapes, they created a sound that is truly their own."

Adds guitarist Corey Beaulieu: "We're excited to have Whitechapel be a part of this amazing bill. It's been over 10 years since we toured together on the Shogun tour and seeing how the band has progressed over the years and added a killer melodic element to their brutal sound just makes it a perfect time to share the stage once again."

And then bassist Paolo has this to share about one of his "favourite new bands of the last few years", Khemmis: "When we were putting the tour together, I heavily advocated for having them on the bill. I think it's always a testament to a band's sound when you have trouble pinning a label to it – doom, melodic metal, thrash, death metal. With Khemmis, it's all in there and rocks hard. They are a 10/10 live band and did a great cover of Rainbow In The Dark, so do not miss their set!"

Trivium announce 2022 North American tour

Between the Buried and Me, Whitechapel and Khemmis will serve as the openers on the trek, which is set to begin in early October

Matthew Heafy performs live on stage with Trivium during a concert at the Kesselhaus on June 19, 2019

Matt Heafy's been plenty busy with non-Trivium endeavors lately.

Just this year, he released the debut album from his black-metal side project, Ibaraki , and released new signature gear with Epiphone – in the form of the MKH Les Paul Custom Origins Collection – and KHDK Electronics (the In Waves clean boost pedal ).

Today though, he announced that he'll be hitting the road with his Trivium brothers once again this fall.

Beginning October 2 with a show in Boise, Idaho, the 'Deadmen and Dragons' tour will take the veteran metal outfit across North America, before concluding with a November 10 gig in Los Angeles. Between the Buried and Me, Whitechapel and Khemmis will serve as the openers for the tour's full duration.

And blast beats just sound really, really good beneath Matt Heafy’s soothing clean singing” while  Revolver labeled it “epic.”  Guitar World  christened second single “ Feast Of Fire ” as “pummeling” and “quintessentially Trivium,” as Metal Injection declared it “really, really catchy.” The band also shared the video for “ The  Phalanx ” in partnership with Elder Scrolls.  Kerrang!  called it “huge.” Heafy discussed the genesis of the track with NME. On October 14,2022 Trivium  slayed  Nashville, Tennessee during the Deadmen and Dragons  tour. This show took place at the Marathon Music Works  venue, located in the heart of Nashville. Supporting acts included  Between the Buried and Me ,  Whitechapel , and  Khemmis . Although it has only been five months since Trivium has performed in Nashville, the last being in May for the  Metal Tour of the Year , fans packed the venue awaiting the chance to see them again.

First band of the night was doom metal band  Khemmis . Formed in 2012 in Denver, Colorado, Khemmis chose their name after an ancient city in Egypt. This was defiantly a great choice for a opening band for this tour, they had the crowds undivided attention from start to finish. Although all the fans had not arrived yet, the ones who were there seemed to thoroughly enjoy their thirty minute set.  This 4 piece band had very high energy, with vocalist  Phil Pendergast  jumping around nearly the whole set, all while playing guitar as well. Some of their songs included “Avernal Gate,” “Sigil,” and “Isolation.” The band closed out their set with the song “A Conversation with Death” which seemed to be a fan favorite.

Second band of the night was Tennessee’s own  Whitechapel . Formed in 2006, this deathcore band formed in Knoxville, Tennessee, and chose the name Whitechapel after the district of London where Jack the Ripper once lived. This six piece band has released 8 albums, and 14 music videos, and is most known for their song “The Saw is the Law.” Vocalist, Phil Bozeman , absolutely wow’ed the crowd with his intense screams, and stage presence. Once Whitechapel came on the energy was intense, crowd surfers began rushing the barricade and keeping security hard at work. Not to mention the mosh pit was absolutely insane Nashville was giving Whitechapel the energy they deserved. This six piece band has previously stated that some of their influences include Cannibal Corpse, Slayer, Pantera, Hatebreed, and Napalm Death, but with their unique sound they have managed to take all of those bands and transform it into one of their own. Whitechapel played seven songs, which included “Lost Boy,” “Orphan,” and “This is Exile” they closed out with the song “Doom Woods.” From the first note to the last, Whitechapel took Nashville by storm, and with over 400,000 monthly Spotify listeners and growing daily its safe to say they aren’t stopping anytime soon.

Up next was progressive metal band  Between the Buried and Me . Formed in 2000, Between the Buried and Me originated in Raleigh, North Carolina and is commonly known as the abbreviation “BTBAM.”  This 5 piece band has produced ten studio albums, and is most known for their ability to quickly switch from thrash metal to keyboard melodies, as well as vocalists  Tommy Giles Rogers Jr   wide range of vocals. BTBAM previously stated one of their biggest musical influences was Counting Crows, ironically enough they chose the name Between the Buried and Me based off a section of lyrics in the Counting Crows song “Ghost Train.” This five piece band has produced ten studio albums, as well as multiple music videos. Some of the songs they played on this tour included “ Sun of Nothing,” “Extremophile” and closed out with the song “The Future is Behind Us.” The crowd wasn’t as rowdy during this set, but seemed to be enjoying the show with multiple fans screaming the lyrics loud enough for the band to hear. Nevertheless, the fans seemed to be very pleased with the performance, and the anticipation was rising for Trivium.

The crowd was packing in as  Trivium was about to grace Nashville with their presence, and fans began chanting their name. Formed in 1999, this heavy metal band originated in Orlando, Florida. Trivium has sold over 1 million albums worldwide, and was even nominated for a Grammy for song “Betrayer” as the “Best Metal Performance.” This four piece band is most known for their insane riffs, dual guitar harmonies, breakdowns, as well as wonderful crowd interaction during the entire set. Vocalist,  Matt Heafy , combines his amazing singing voice, with intense screams and growls which makes for an amazing show. During the show Matt stopped multiple times to speak to the crowd, thank them for coming out and supporting live music, as well as challenging this Nashville crowd to beat Alberta, Canada as the most insane crowd of the tour, a challenge that Nashville was willing to accept. Trivium has released ten studio albums, and endless music videos.  They performed for approximately 1.5 hours, and the set list included a variety of songs, some that include “What the Dead Men Say,” “Chaos Reigns,” “In the Court of the Dragon,” “The Heart From Your Hate,” and they closed out with the song “In Waves.” Once Trivium began performing the mosh pits went wild, some of which even had small children, that everyone in the pit was allowing to have the best time and keeping them safe. Before the set was complete, Trivium crowned Nashville as the most intense crowd of the tour this far, something that Music City made nearly impossible for another city to take over. Although Trivium has visited Nashville two times in 2022, we greatly anticipate the next time they come to town.  The Deadmen and Dragons tour began October 2, 2022 in Boise, Idaho and ends November 10,2022 in Los Angeles, California. There is still time to get tickets to this iconic tour click HERE  for more details.

TRIVIUM’S “Deadmen and Dragons Tour” -October 9 @ The Myth in Maplewood, MN

trivium deadmen and dragons tour setlist

On Sunday evening, October 9th, thousands of Trivium fans poured into The Myth in Maplewood, Minnesota to watch the sixth show of “The Deadmen and Dragons Tour.”  It was evident that the crowd was ready for great music. The band, also, was ready to play songs from their last two albums- several of which fans didn’t get a chance to hear when the band was supporting Megadeth on the “Metal Tour of the Year” last fall.  This time, with Trivium headlining, we were treated to a longer setlist and several great supporting bands. For over four hours, the crowd was unified over our common love of heavy music.

The first act to open the night was Khemmis (Phil Pendergast- guitar/vocals, Ben Hutcherson- guitar/vocals, David Small-bass, Zach Coleman-drums).  With much intensity, this Denver-based Doom Metal band started playing “Avernal Gate,” welcoming listeners into their world of doom. The quartet continued to hype up the crowd with “Three Gates,” “Sigil,” and “Isolation,” as more people poured into the venue. The band closed their set with “Conversation With Death, an eerie invitation to consider something we will all face, but hope not to anytime soon. This was my first time seeing Khemmis, and I thought they were great live. Five songs were just too short of a setlist. I’m not much of a doom-metal guy, but I found myself wanting more.

Next on the stage was the mighty Whitechapel (Phil Bozeman- vocals, Ben Savage- lead guitar, Alex Wade- rhythm guitar, Gabe Crisp-bass, Zach Householder- guitar, Brandon Zackey- touring drummer). This Knoxville band really pushed their latest album hard. “Kin” was released nearly a year ago. Unfortunately, their set list was cut short due to audio issues, but of the five songs Whitechapel played, four were from “Kin.” They opened with “I Will Find You,” “Anticure,” “Lost Boy,” and their toned-down ballad, “Orphan.” Long-time fans absolutely loved it when they closed with “This Is Exile,” an example of quality deathcore from the band’s 2008 album of the same name. It’s too bad we only got to hear five songs, but it was a great set nonetheless.

The crowd intently watched as Between the Buried and Me (Tommy Rogers- vocals, Paul Waggoner- lead guitar, Dustie Waring- guitar, Dan Briggs- bass, Blake Richardson- drums) took the stage and began their set with their chaotic 2007 hit,  “Sun of Nothing.” The progressive band continued with their newer song, “Revolution in Limbo,” and the ferocious “Extremophile Elite.” The bass was pounding as they proceeded into the nearly twelve-minute-long track, “Never Seen/Future Shock.” Because the band’s songs are longer than most, we were only graced with a five-song setlist, but it was killer. The North Carolina prog giants closed their set with their funky “The Future Is Behind Us.”

Trivium might be one of the most underrated metal bands of the last two decades.  They have wowed the masses with their extensive touring and popular twitch channels and just released their tenth studio album nearly a year ago to the day.  I was really pleased to hear a setlist splattered with songs from the last two albums (this is the Deadmen and Dragons Tour after all)! As the intro song “IX,” played, the four bandmates (Matt Heafy- vocals/guitar, Corey Beaulieu- guitar/backing vocals, Paolo Gregoletto- bass/backing vocals, Alex Bent- drums) took their positions on stage. The crowd erupted as Trivium played “What the Deadmen Say,” their title track single from their ninth album.  As the circle pits began to form within the packed crowd, the Orlando-based quartet played the fan favorite, “Into the Mouth of Hell We March.”

Trivium continued their set with their monstrous, “The Sin and the Sentence ” and the thrashy  “A Crisis of Revelation,” which was the first time Minnesota fans heard the song performed live. Heafy gave a shoutout to Minnesota as three of their crew are from the Twin Cities. They then played “A Chaos Reigns” and chaos reigned all over the pit. The band even stopped mid-song when an unruly fan was causing problems in the pit. Matt said the guy probably had too much to drink and just needed to be in timeout like his kids. They resumed right where they left off and knocked the rest of the song out of the park. Next was “The Shadow of the Abattoir,” one of my personal favorites from the band’s latest album.

There was a short intermission as the instrumental song, “X” was played and the band re-emerged at the final roar with their massive hit, “In the Court of the Dragon.” Our heads became sore during the fast-paced, “To The Rats” and there wasn’t a quiet voice in the venue when they played “The Heart From Your Hate.” Matt Heafy showed us all that he is a master of his craft as he led the band in playing an eleven-minute-long masterpiece, “Shogun” and older fans were treated to the massively popular song from 2005, “Like Light to the Flies.”

As the night was coming to a close, the lights dimmed and “Capsizing the Sea” played in the background. As soon as the instrumental was over, every Trivium fan went wild as Matt screamed the opening lyrics to “In Waves.”  Every album the band puts out is as good, if not better than the one before. Every tour the band plays is as good, if not better than the tour before. Everything they touch is gold and “The Deadmen and Dragons” was no exception. It was a killer evening watching these beasts of metal. I highly recommend catching them on this tour if they are coming to a city near you.
