James Acaster: Hecklers Welcome | Review of the comic's current tour

James Acaster: Hecklers Welcome

Review of the comic's current tour

James Acaster’s been a comedian for 15 years and at the top of his game for a good two-thirds of that. Yet  he’s still pushing himself creatively even though – as he confesses here – he really doesn’t like doing stand-up. He learned that in lockdown, free from the rigmarole of having to do it.

Hecklers Welcome is an attempt to address both those points, by learning to be in the moment a bit more, to go with the flow of the gig, whatever the crowd may throw at him, even if it means deviating from his carefully crafted routines.

By his own admission he’s been bad-tempered and sulky with audiences before, going in hard on the most good-natured of interruptions or railing testily against a room for being quiet and unappreciative when they had – until then – been having a perfectly nice time. Even if that audience were nursery-aged children he was reading a Roald Dahl story to.

Thanks to therapy, he’s come to realise much of this is on him. And because it came from therapy, of course it all stems from childhood. When he was little boy watching any sort of performance he immediately wanted to be part of it – and when he did join it, it usually ended in humiliation. That combination of an ego that’s both huge and fragile defines so many comedians, and was evident at such a young age.

Despite the title, hecklers aren’t so much welcome here as tolerated. Setting out the ground rules at the start, Acaster essentially says he’ll take them in good grace, as well being chill about people wandering to the loo or checking their phones.

They’re a pretty well-behaved lot in Brighton tonight. During the show itself only a few heckles are attempted, and only one is delivered with enough confidence to be heard above the laughs and hubbub of the show, and is subsequently addressed in the same well-intentioned spirit it was intended. For why would anyone want to derail the work of a comedian known for meticulous storytelling, skilfully engineered to build up a bigger picture?

The key story on which all else hangs involves the five-year-old Acaster reduced to tears when taking part in a demonstration in front of his classmates. The therapist has this as the defining incident, with the adult comic always trying to protect that version of himself whenever he’s on stage.

That’s not the only humiliation. The story of him entering a dog show with an uncooperative pet is vivid in its detail, but funnier when we learn just why the sausage-dog came to be named Stephen Minney, and the consequences of that odd decision.

Even a story about a truly terrible impression of the then Prince Charles for a school talent contest, which is wilfully anticlimactic, has his place. And as an adult, ignominy still stalks him – witness his unconventional approach to the teenage tearaways who terrorise a train carriage he was on.

Funny as these are – exaggerated by Acaster’s ever-indignant retelling and awkward, angular physicality as much as his spry turn of phrase – it’s how these stories piece together into a bigger picture that sets Hecklers Welcome aside. Psychologists will tell us that aggressors are so often scared people lashing out against the world, and that’s what Acaster subtly points towards at every turn.

For an encore, Acaster properly confronts his nemeses and actively invites the heckles. And in truth, it’s a mess, primarily comprising people shouting out bits of old routines, which doesn’t give him much to work with. Plus the question about Russell Brand could never have provided a funny payoff. Hecklers may be welcome… but only if you’re as sharp as Acaster.

Tickets are on general sale now, with limited availability already for several of the new shows.

Since its launch in late 2018, Off Menu has been nominated twice in the Best Comedy Podcast category at the National Comedy Awards, and has welcomed over 180 guests through the doors of the Dream Restaurant.

Ed and James recently teamed up for Celebrity Hunted in support of Stand Up to Cancer, memorably tackling the hunters' ground crew face-to-face with water pistols in the grounds of the Taskmaster house.

James will also be on the road with his own solo stand-up show Hecklers Welcome later this year.

James Acaster fans despair as websites crash and tickets sell out

James Acaster fans have joked that tickets for the comic’s new tour are “harder to get than Glastonbury”.

The stand-up comedian is heading out on the road later this year with his new show Hecklers Welcome , his first UK tour since 2019’s cold lasagne hate myself 1999 .

The first lot of dates went on sale on Friday (31 March), with shows in Cardiff, Kettering, Glasgow, Salford, Birmingham, Dublin, Brighton, Bristol, Leeds, Belfast. The list of dates can be found here , with more to be announced.

However, many fans found that, as tickets went on sale, they were unable to purchase tickets due to the various ticket websites crashing.

Sharing a photo of a screen that said there were “too many internet transactions in process”, one fan tweeted: “Tried to get James Acaster tickets, had a breakdown, bon appetit,” in reference to the comic’s much-memed appearance on The Great Celebrity Bake Off .

  • Kathy Burke praised for ‘woke’ rant after Amanda Holden’s Paul O’Grady remark
  • ‘I definitely abused my own self’: Florence Pugh felt ‘immense guilt’ for leaving Midsommar character
  • Falcon death: Gladiators star Bernadette Hunt dies aged 59

“Buying James Acaster tickets went super well Thanku x,” another fan commented, their screen simply reading: “This service is unavailable.”

“Why is it harder to get James Acaster tickets than it is to get Glastonbury tickets?” another punter questioned.

“Logged on to website at 9.45 to get James Acaster tickets. Placed in massive queue at 10am. Queued for twenty minutes. Tickets sold out. Had a breakdown. Bon appetit,” one tweet read.

“Trying to get James Acaster tickets is gonna be my Joker origin story,” another fan joked.

Following his last tour, Acaster took a break from stand-up comedy, with many fans believing he’d given up the profession for good.

However, speaking to The Independent in August , the Off Menu host said that he “never said I’d quit”, adding: “Some people were under the impression that I did quit, but I really didn’t.”

On returning to the stage for Hecklers Welcome , Acaster said that he had spent his break from comedy working on his relationship with the audience, rather than derailing entire shows to talk to hecklers.

“I’m going into it knowing, ‘Here are the things that I really didn’t enjoy before, so let’s focus on those things and let’s focus on making that better, and making that aspect of my performance better,’” he said.

“To now pick it up from there and go, ‘OK, I don’t like all those things, but what are we going to do about that? How are we going to make sure those things don’t ruin it for you?’ – that’s been really positive.”

Off Menu With Ed Gamble And James Acaster Tour Announced

Comedians and podcast hosts Ed Gamble have announced the first ever live tour of their critically acclaimed podcast, Off Menu. Taking in an initial eight dates in October and November 2023 including one night at London’s prestigious Royal Albert Hall, tickets are available to members of the Off Menu mailing list on Thursday 13th April at 10:00 am with general on sale taking place on Friday 14th April at 10:00am. Tickets will be available here.

Update: more dates added including London Royal Albert Hall with second nights being added in Bristol, Glasgow, Manchester and Dublin. Tickets at link above.

In  Off Menu: Live  the genie waiter (James) and maître d’ (Ed) will quiz a guest about their dream cuisine – their favourite ever starter, main course, dessert, side dish and drink (not in that order) – live on stage. Featuring a different guest each night, and a slightly different version of James’ Diet Coke story.

Since launching in December 2018, Off Menu has become one of the biggest podcasts in the country and was an instant success, winning multiple awards, regularly topping the podcast charts and racking up over 120 million downloads. In 2019 and 2020, it was nominated for Best Comedy Podcast at the British Podcast Awards.

Ed Gamble said:  “I am mad with joy that we finally get to put the dream meals on wheels.”

James Acaster said:  “Like Shrek and Donkey, Ed and I are off on a noble quest and we won’t stop until we find our happily ever after.”

Ed Gamble  is an award-winning stand-up comedian, writer, and podcaster. Crowned the series nine champion of the award-winning TV show Taskmaster (Dave/Channel 4), Ed was featured on the second Champions of Champions episode in 2022 and is the current host of the Taskmaster Podcast. Ed has appeared in over 30 episodes of the hit satirical panel show Mock the Week between 2015 to 2021, making him one of the most frequent regulars on the show. He is also a judge on BBC Two’s Great British Menu and co-host of a Radio X Show with Matthew Crosby.

Ed additionally served as one of six rotating guest-hosts for Pointless (BBC One) – alongside Alexander Armstrong. Additional TV credits include Almost Royal (BBC America), Man Down (Channel 4), Blankety Blank (BBC One), Roast Battle (Comedy Central), Richard Osman’s House of Games (BBC Two), Hypothetical (Dave). His most recent stand-up tour, Electric, was given an Autumn extension after selling out multiple venues in its initial run. This comes after his twice-extended 2019 show, Blizzard, and his 2019 Amazon Prime special, Blood Sugar. Most recently, Ed has appeared on Live at the Apollo (BBC Two) for a second time.

James Acaster  is ‘One of comedy’s most original voices’ (Evening Standard). A whimsical master, he has received acclaim from around the world, including a record breaking 5 consecutive nominations for Best Comedy Show at the 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 & 2016 Edinburgh Fringe Festivals. In 2017 he toured the country with a staggering three show Trelogy, performing Recognise, Represent and Reset consecutively over three nights in each venue. These three shows and Recap, form his Netflix four part series, Repertoire.

It was the first of its kind, a stand up mini series with an overarching narrative, James being the first UK comic to shoot more than one Netflix Original special. James has released three books – Classic Scrapes, Perfect Sound Whatever and James Acaster's Guide to Quitting Social Media – all of which made the Sunday Times bestseller list. In 2019, James completed a mammoth long tour of his hugely successful show Cold Lasagne Hate Myself 1999 around the UK, Australia and America; the show is now available to watch on Vimeo. James was recently announced as joining the cast of the Ghostbusters sequel and will be touring his new stand-up show Hecklers Welcome in autumn 2023.
