Capitals defenseman Nick Jensen taken off ice on stretcher

W ASHINGTON -- The  Washington Capitals say defenseman Nick Jensen is conscious, alert and using his extremities after being stretchered off the ice following a scary collision.

Jensen's head hit the boards and his body went limp after he was shoved by Tampa Bay's Michael Eyssimont late in the first period of a 4-2 Washington victory on Saturday. He was attended to by medical personnel for several minutes, after trainers called for the stretcher.

Officials postponed the final 1:31 of the first period to be played after intermission. There was no penalty called on the play, referee Frederick L'Ecuyer said, leading to boos from the crowd.

After a scoreless second period, John Carlson and Nic Dowd scored in the third, helping the Capitals to secure the win.

Dowd, a college teammate and longtime friend of Jensen's, dropped the gloves in the second to fight Eyssimont, who was booed by the crowd each time he touched the puck after the hit on Jensen.

"Any of our teammates would've stepped up and done that," Dowd said. "I just saw an opportunity. I think there's obviously a bit of a code, and we were able to handle it and move on."

Nick Jensen walked out of the arena with his family, avoiding a trip to the hospital after the Washington Capitals defenseman crashed headfirst into the boards and was stretchered off the ice Saturday.

That update from coach Spencer Carbery came after the team said Jensen was conscious, alert and moving his extremities following the shove from Tampa Bay's Michael Eyssimont late in the first period.

“Scary situation,” Carbery said. “Initially when you see something like that, someone stretchered off, you’re thinking the worst-case situations. He’s doing better.”

Capitals players after their emotional 4-2 victory to keep their playoff hopes alive still had Jensen on their minds, especially college teammate and longtime friend Nic Dowd, who fought Eyssimont in the second.

“You’re immediately upset, but then when I see Jens laying on the ice like that, it’s tough to see,” Dowd said, his eyes welling with tears. "Our kids grow up together, born around the same time, know his family really well. Seeing anybody in a vulnerable state like that is challenging. But he’s a tough guy, so, I’m glad to know that he’s doing better now.”

“He’s awesome,” said Lightning coach Jon Cooper, who won a USHL championship with Jensen in 2010 with Green Bay and went over to the home locker room to check in about him. “Those are tough ones to see, especially because of the result of the hit and it wasn’t penalized, nor should it have been. It was just a tough one all the way around. I’m hoping he’s OK. I heard he’s doing OK.”

Jensen's absence is the latest injury to Washington's blue line, already missing Rasmus Sandin, whose head hit a stanchion Sunday against Ottawa and who has been ruled out for the remainder of the regular season. The other five defensemen shouldered the load the rest of the way in the Lightning game.

"They really stepped up," said goaltender Charlie Lindgren, who added that he and his teammates determined to play like Jensen after the injury.

“That’s hard and it’s the right way and I thought we did that. Credit to the guys in here because it’s not easy seeing a brother go down like that.”

Sad to say Expectations were Not Met!

The good news is Jensen's is right on the gulf....truly gulf front! That was what caught my eye trying to find accommodations post hurricane Ian ( 5 months ago now). This complex survived the hurricane with minimal damage. The 2 bedroom unit was clean upon our arrival, fresh sheets, towels, and true to the online pictures. Beachy vibe. We soon discovered that although the wi fi worked well the TV's were not working in our unit. More importantly the air conditioner filter was very dirty....... I called Breakaway Vacations to report this and was told someone would be out later today or tomorrow. No one ever came. I called 3 times. I was told once that things were a little lean post Ian. My husband remarked that the prices were not lean. We found out that other units had TV but no internet. My main concern was the 20 X 20 dirty filter though. This is just a simple replacement, no tech skill required. Apparently Breakaway Vacations had no filters on the island or anyone to bring one to us. My simple expectation of clean air and yes TV too was not met. More

This company is very unethical and steals booking fees for trips they cannot accommodate! The island is not accessible and still they called us and told us that even though they cancelled our trip, we would receive no refund! I guess thats what you call South Florida hospitality, this management company is really poorly managed…

When we checked in to our suite, the only toilet in the unit was not operable! Despite several calls to the property manager a plumber/handyman was never sent to solve the issue!! In fact, she implied that we were mistaken! I would never recommend this place to anyone despite its location. In contrast we’ve stayed at South Seas where everyone is extremely helpful and friendly!!

We stayed here for the week of Christmas for a nice quiet getaway. What a spectacular place! We rented the Penthouse sweet and couldn’t have been more pleased! The views are just spectacular. The accommodations and space is superb! The staff is most friendly and helpful! The location is perfect for everything! Can’t recommend this place enough and will be staying again!

I first visited Jensen's 28 years ago when my oldest daughter celebratedher 1st birthday. Fast forward to my current visit...still can’t beat the beach access and view. My youngest daughter (now 22) visited with me for 3-day vacation before she went back to college. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in the Penthouse...the only unit available but definitely the best. Sunsets were awesome and the accommodations were super clean. We appreciated the beach umbrellas, noodles and shelling net ...made our relaxing days on the beach more enjoyable. Thank you Jensen's for a great getaway...so relaxing!

We just returned home from a most amazing, relaxing stay at Jensen’s on the Gulf! I can’t say enough good things about this place. Location, cleanliness, decor, customer service, this place has it all! We stayed in room #1 and although it’s small, it was perfect for a weekend stay!
