How to Tour the Walt Disney Studios in Burbank

Have you ever dreamed of getting to tour the Walt Disney Studios in Burbank? This is one of the hardest studios in Los Angeles to get to see. There are only three studios that offer tours that anyone can buy tickets for. Those studios are Paramount , Sony and Warner Bros . The main ways that you can tour the Walt Disney Studios in Burbank are through D23 Events, Disney Movie Insider Rewards, and Adventures By Disney.

What is D23? It is The Official Disney Fan Club! Earlier this year I attended the D23 Expo which I highly recommend. You can be a general member for free or a gold member for a price. For $99.99 a year, plus shipping and taxes, you can join the club. There will be a few free member events throughout the year but most activities require you to spend more money to attend. However, if you really want to tour the studio you’ll most likely find the price tag worth the investment.

At least two times a year club members can purchase tickets to tour the studio. This tour always sells out though so you do have to pay close attention to when it goes on sale. The best way to stay informed is to check the D23 events page on their website often. The pricing starts at $99 and goes up from there. Pricing is more for general members (the free membership), and it is more expensive for weekend tours as well. You can find tickets and available tour times through the D23 event page when availability permits.

What does this tour entail? According to the D23 website, you can expect a 2 and 1/2 hour tour which includes a visit to Walt Disney’s Office and the archives.

Disney Movie Insiders Rewards Program

Did you know that you can earn points for watching Disney movies in theatres and by purchasing Disney Movies on DVD and BluRay? Once you create an account with Disney Movie Insider Rewards and start earning points you can redeem them for great rewards. One of the rewards is to tour the Walt Disney Studios in Burbank. This reward costs 12,000 points so it will take a while to earn enough.

Adventures By Disney is a way to travel while having Disney take care of everything. There is a four-day tour of Los Angeles. This experience gives you access to the park in a unique way and provides a tour of the Walt Disney Studios in Burbank. You even get to tour Imagineering. These trips and experiences with ABD can be very pricey but you certainly get some spectacular experiences. You can see pricing and details here .

Hollywood Studio Tours

Which are the best.

la tour studio disney

This post covers the most enjoyable movie studio tours in and around Hollywood.

With so many historic studios in the area, it might be difficult to pick just one to visit.

Taking a studio tour is one of the top things to do in LA .

  • Ways to Save on Tours

STUDIO TOURS

Interestingly enough, there are quite a few differences between the tours offered at each studio, and that should make it easier to figure out which tour best fits your expectations.

Ticket prices vary from $62 per person to literally thousands of dollars.

However, 3 of the tours, Warner Bros., Sony Pictures, and Universal Studios are included for free or at a lower cost in several tourist attraction passes.

It's also worth noting that the length of these tours can run from roughly an hour to almost a week.

With all of that said, let's start talking about what each movie studio offers with their tours.

  • Warner Bros.
  • Sony Pictures
  • Universal Studios
  • Paramount Pictures
  • Adventures by Disney: Disney Backstage

At the bottom of this post , we share some thoughts and opinions from members of our Los Angeles Travel Tips group on Facebook.

Our group comprises roughly 9,000 locals (like our tour guides), tourists, returning visitors, and newbies to LA.

You don't need to be a member to read the posts, comments, and recommendations.

WARNER BROS. STUDIO TOUR

Below is a summary of our post on Warner Brothers Studio tours , where we also provide tips on planning your trip.

If you're in the market for a somewhat normal tour on the backlot, this might be one of your best bets.

In addition to seeing movie sets and sound stages from some of the most notable movies in film history, you'll also have the opportunity to enjoy a few specific activities.

la tour studio disney

While on this movie studio tour, you'll be able to re-create a famous scene from the hit television show Friends , climb aboard Harry Potter 's broomstick, and even create your own Batmobile.

Warner Bros. even offers an interactive sound stage that explores the entire process of making a film from start to finish.

At three hours in length, this tour is probably the longest duration of all of the options in Hollywood.

  • $70/adult | $60/child
  • Availability: Thursday - Monday
  • Hours: Every half hour from 9 am - 3:30 pm
  • Duration: 3 hours
  • Available in both English and Spanish
  • Click here for more information .

TIP: This tour is included for free with the purchase of the Go City Los Angeles Explorer Tourist Pass .

You can also combine this tour with the Universal Studios tour using the combo deal below!

la tour studio disney

With an overall score of 4.5 out of 5 stars , it's fair to say that this Hollywood studio tour is very well rated ( read reviews here ).

Some guests have gone so far as to suggest that this trip is worth every single penny.

Visitors were typically very happy with their tour guides, referring to them as both friendly and informative.

SONY PICTURES STUDIO TOUR

This might be the most affordable movie studio tour in Hollywood, and it's also one of the most historic. Do note, that is is a walking tour.

While on this tour, you'll see the sound stages where they recorded classics such as The Wizard of Oz and superhero flicks like Spider-man .

Additionally, you'll have the opportunity to see where Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune are recorded.

Although they don't make any promises, there's always a chance that you'll run into someone famous on this active studio back lot!

They also offer a premium tour which includes transportation via golf cart, access to the Sony Museum, a free souvenir photo, a complimentary beverage, and lower prices at the Sony Studio Store.

Tickets

  • $55 per person | $150 for the Premium tour
  • Availability: Monday – Friday at 10:30 am, 1:30 pm and 2:30 pm
  • Duration: 2 hours

Tip: Admission is usually included for free with the purchase of at least one Los Angeles tourist pass .

With an overall score of 4 out of 5 stars on TripAdvisor, it's clear that this is a pretty popular Hollywood studio tour.

Customers really appreciated the opportunity to see several historic filming locations and learn a lot about the process of making a movie.

Although some reviewers were unhappy that this is a walking tour, others simply appreciated the opportunity to see where film history was made.

UNIVERSAL STUDIOS TOUR

This is where things get interesting, as Universal Studios has essentially made their tour one of the services offered at their amusement park.

In other words, you need to buy a ticket for Universal Studios Hollywood in order to experience this studio tour.

Clocking in at only one hour in length, this is definitely the shortest studio tour available. Check out this video of Stephen Spielberg giving a tour of the site.

In addition to seeing the back lot, you'll also experience attractions such as the Jaws ride, King Kong 360 in 3D, Bates Motel and Fast & The Furious : Supercharged.

Although it will cost more to take this tour, it's worth noting that your ticket lasts all day and guarantees access to all of the rides.

  • $119-$139/adult | $109-$129/child
  • Availability: Daily from 8 am - 6 pm
  • Duration: 1 hour
  • Click here for ticket information .

TIP:   Universal Studios Hollywood is included for free with the purchase of a tourist pass. Read about all the opportunities for deals in our full post .

Despite the higher price tag, this movie studio tour has still received quite excellent ratings ( read reviews here ). The overall Universal Studios Hollywood experience has a score of 4.7 out of 5 stars .

A few visitors have even suggested that this trip around the studio is worth the price of admission.

Although most customers feel that the ticket price is a bit high, even the critics can't deny that they had a blast.

PARAMOUNT PICTURES STUDIO TOUR

Unlike the other movie studios, Paramount Pictures offers three different studio tours.

The main tour is 2 hours long and covers quite a lot of ground on the backlot.

However, if you want to experience more, their VIP tour lasts for 4 ½ hours and includes access to several additional areas.

The VIP tour also provides a gourmet lunch at a unique location in the studio.

Alternatively, you can also choose a 2 ½ hour night tour that reveals a lot of historic locations such as notable theaters and original film vaults.

No matter which option you choose, you'll learn a lot about the history of Paramount.

  • $65 for the studio tour | $215 for the VIP tour
  • Availability of Studio tour: Mon-Fri, every half hour from 9 AM - 3:30 PM
  • Availability of VIP tour: Mon, Wed, Fri at 9:30 AM
  • Duration of Studio tour: 2 hours
  • Duration of VIP tour: 4 ½ hours
  • Click here for additional information .

Reviews for the Paramount Pictures Studio tours are very positive, averaging a rating of 4 ½ out of 5 stars on TripAdvisor.

Some visitors referred to the excursion as a movie buff's dream, while others were just impressed with how much they learned and discovered.

Some reviewers indicated that Paramount alters the tour slightly depending on the season, ensuring a nice variety of topics and locations to cover no matter when you decide to buy a ticket.

ADVENTURES BY DISNEY: DISNEY BACKSTAGE

You had to figure that Disney was going to be a little more expensive, but the actual cost of this week-long experience might shock you.

To be fair, the package includes meals and accommodation at both the Loews Hollywood Hotel and Disney's Grand Californian Hotel & Spa.

This Disney backstage adventure includes a tour of the Walt Disney Studios & Archives, an Imagineering tour, a Hollywood walking tour, and a tour of the Jim Henson Company.

Most of these tours are only available via this week-long package. The entire itinerary takes six days to complete, and it will keep you busy with plenty of fun activities from start to finish.

  • $4,999 for Adults | $4,749 for Children
  • Availability: 2-4 times per month
  • Duration: 6 days
  • Hotel accommodation included
  • 11 Meals included
  • VIP Disneyland ticket included

As you can probably imagine, the testimonials for this experience are quite positive ( read reviews here ).

Some guests even noted that they made friends with their tour guides and continue to stay in touch with them to this very day.

Additionally, customers also appreciated the opportunity to see some behind-the-scenes areas that bring the history of Walt Disney to life.

One visitor even suggested that this trip allowed them to become kids again as they explored secret and wonderful locations at the happiest place on earth.

COMBO DEALS

If you're looking for a better price on these tours and other activities in Hollywood, you might want to consider one of the following combo packages.

Studios like Warner Bros. and Universal often work with tour companies to provide their services at lower prices.

There are several options to mull over, and almost all of them provide additional tours and services.

If you plan on spending more than one day in Hollywood, these combo deals are definitely worth a look.

GO CITY LOS ANGELES ALL-INCLUSIVE PASS

There's a reason that this is one of the premier attraction passes in Los Angeles.

In addition to offering access to a variety of notable locations, they also provide admission to some studio tours.

In particular, you can enjoy the Universal Studios tour, the Warner Bros. Studio tour and (sometimes) the Sony Pictures Studio tour with one version of this pass or another.

The Warner Bros. Studio tour is currently only offered with their Explorer Pass, and you'll need to purchase at least a 3-Day All-Inclusive pass to get admission to the Universal Studios tour .

Given that this tourist pass also supplies tickets to Six Flags Magic Mountain and Knott's Berry Farm, it's fair to say that the Go City Los Angeles All-Inclusive Pass could be a real bargain.

  • $109 for 1-day pass
  • $164 for 2-day pass
  • $284 for 3-day pass
  • $344 for 4-day pass
  • $374 for 5-day pass
  • $434 for 7-day pass
  • $99 for 2 choices
  • $119 for 3 choices
  • $144 for 4 choices
  • $154 for 5 choices
  • $189 for 7 choices
  • This attraction pass is available every day of the week
  • Includes up to 3 movie studio tours

Read our post comparing the different tourist attraction passes available in Los Angeles.

TRANSPORTATION COMBO PACKAGES

If you're looking for transportation to and from each movie studio tour, the following services are available.

The advantage of these combo deals is that you won't have to pay for parking, gas, or car rental in order to visit each location.

Hotel pickup and drop-off are included with each package.

Take your time and enjoy the studio tour without having to worry about anything else!

  • Not currently available as of January 2024

Universal Studio Tours Sign

CELEBRITY HOMES TOUR COMBO PACKAGES

These combo deals provide both a celebrity home tour and a movie studio tour.

Each option includes transportation not only around Hollywood but also to and from the studios.

While some of these services use a mini-bus, others drive you around town in a luxury sedan or an SUV.

Each company offers both hotel pickup and drop-off.

Expect these outings to last for between 6-8 hours on average.

  • Warner Bros. Studio Tour & Movie Star Homes Tour (Starline Tours) - $119/Adults | $99/Children
  • Alternatively, we offer our own self-guided celebrity homes tour .

This might be a good way to save even more money if you don't mind doing a bit of driving around Hollywood and Beverly Hills.

TIPS FROM LOCALS AND TRAVELERS

While we provide the details of what each tour offers, costs, and other information, here you can see what members of our Los Angeles Travel Tips group on Facebook have to say.

There are plenty of fans of the Warner Brothers tour.

la tour studio disney

And some enjoyed Paramount as well.

la tour studio disney

If you have to choose only one, between Warners or Paramount, these members’ insight may help.

la tour studio disney

Universal Studios received mixed reviews. Some people felt it was a waste of time and money.

la tour studio disney

On the other hand, Issa had a fantastic time, so much so that she wrote a very long post detailing her time there and how to make the most of your visit.

la tour studio disney

Take a look at our Los Angeles Travel Tips group for more recommendations, opinions and advice.

You don't need to join to read comments, but if you do join you can post a question regarding the studios!

The new year is here, and we’re all about bringing you the best things to do in LA, whether you are homegrown and live here full time, or if you have friends and family visiting and would love to show all that our beautiful city has to offer. One of the best ways to gain insider access to Hollywood’s glitz and glamour is through studio tours. The four major studio tours in LA provide a chance to get up close and personal with celebrities and production teams as they create movie magic and TV history. You’ll also get to go deeper into some of the classic films and see just how imaginative and resourceful studios can be when it comes to getting the perfect sound, visuals and storyline. If you’re lucky, you also may see a dreamy movie star or TV actor buzzing by you in their golf cart on their way to set. Here are four of the main studio tours in LA, plus an extra special behind the scenes tour of what is widely considered the happiest place on earth.

Pro Tip: The studio tours can fill up quite quickly, so be sure to get your tickets in advance. Also, each studio lot has their own parking procedures and some are cash only, so be sure to have that information on hand before you go. Finally, the studio tours can vary in both price and time, and you can follow our guide below to get clear on which experience is right for you!

Warner Bros. Studio Tour Hollywood

Location: Burbank

The Warner Bros. Studio Tour Hollywood is our first pick for many reasons. First, from the time you enter the parking garage to the time your tram takes off on the lot, you are given movie star treatment. We love that although the tour can be quite large in the number of attendees, it feels like your own private experience with only 10-12 guests at a time on the tour. The Warner Bros. Tour has a great mix of both driving by numerous outdoor sets and sound stages and ample opportunity to wander around on your own. At just under three hours, this tour was the longest one we went on, and we still were left with wanting more. Our best moments included the new Storytelling Showcase highlighting nearly 100 years of Warner Bros . The new grand finale delights fans of the DC Universe and The Wizarding World of Harry Potter with recreated sets, authentic props, costumes, and memorable photo opportunities. Gilmore Girls fans will also delight in getting to walk around some very familiar scenes, and there are some great photo ops at ‘Central Perk’ and in front of the iconic Friends fountain! A brand new addition to the tour is the TCM (Turner Classic Movies) Classic Films Tour for TCM’s 30th anniversary . This tour takes guests on an incredible journey through the Golden Age of Hollywood, celebrating iconic movies which include  the exterior of James Dean’s apartment where he resided while working on the lot, the Eastwood Scoring Stage built in 1929, and the Property House, which houses over a half-million television and movie props, including the pirate chair from Captain Blood  and even the breathtaking Tiffany’s chandelier from  The Letter . Get tickets here !

Pro-Tip Bonus: A fter you work up an appetite walking around the studio, head to The Smokehouse in Burbank for a martini, steak, or just to admire the many old Hollywood stars that frequented the joint. Legend has it that The Smokehouse was also George Clooney’s go-to restaurant for many years while filming ER.

Universal Studios Tour

Location: Universal Studios, Universal City

This tour is SO much fun and packs so much within the 60 minute run time. The studio tour is included with park admission, so you can spend the whole day going on rides and then hop on the tour for a nice relaxing break. Comedian and The Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon makes a (pre-recorded) appearance as you get to travel throughout one of the world’s biggest TV and movie production lots. We loved the exclusive behind the scenes look of the Jupiter’s Claim set on Jordan Peele’s latest horror movie, NOPE. We don’t want to give away all the twists and turns on the ride, but let’s just say there are some jaw dropping moments that will leave you quaking with delight.

Paramount Studios Tour

Location: Hollywood

If you’re a movie buff looking for a classic Hollywood tour, look no further than the Paramount Studios Tour. From seeing the original Forrest Gump bench to the “little New York” city, Paramount has a large part in Hollywood’s history and future. Make sure to download their Paramount Studio Tour app, as it provides a fun extra bonus to see how the props in front of you were actually used in their respective movies. We loved the insider glimpse into Hollywood’s top TV shows like I Love Lucy and films like the original King Kong. Paramount Pictures offers three different studio tours, and while their main tour is just about 2 hours long and covers much ground, the VIP also offers some extra perks including a gourmet lunch.

Sony Pictures Tour

Location: Culver City

The Sony Pictures Tour is our choice for when you’re in the mood to explore on foot, as this two-hour guided walking tour gives you the close up experience of a working studio. Create some great Vision Board pics by holding an Oscar and an Emmy Award, and visit sound stages once used for giant films like The Wizard of Oz, Men in Black and Spider-Man . Swing by smash-hit games shows Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune . Our favorite was the scoring stage and we left having a deeper appreciation for the labor intensive process of making a movie and all the integral parts within production from start to finish.

Visiting the Walt Disney Studios Lot

by Disney Park Princess | Feb 5, 2019 | Adventures by Disney , Disneyland , Other Disney Parks Around The World | 8 comments

Walt Disney Studios Lot

If you’re a Disney fan (and I’m guessing you are if you’re reading this blog!), then I’ll bet you’ve always wanted to visit the headquarters of the Walt Disney Company – the Walt Disney Studios lot in Burbank, CA. There’s just something so special about the location where Walt himself worked and dreamed up all of our favorite movies and the US parks.

Since I live in Southern California I’ve been lucky enough to visit the Walt Disney Studios (affectionately called The Lot), many times, and I have to tell you – it’s as special and as magical as you’d imagine. And no matter how many times I get to visit it just never loses that sense of awe for me. Here are some of the things I love to see that I think makes ‘The Lot’ so special.

SOUNDSTAGES

Unless you work in ‘the industry’ I’m sure you don’t get to spend a lot of time at a working movie studio. Which makes it so cool when you visit The Lot! You can wander around the soundstages. If you’re lucky enough, you might see a TV show or film in production. Of course you can’t take photos, but getting to see a piece of Hollywood up close and personal is priceless. And then when you see that episode on TV months later you’ll remember what it really looked like and how much work went into just that one scene.

It gives you such a new appreciation for the entertainment industry. Plus, as Disney fans, it’s a must to stop by Soundstage 2 and take a photo with the plaque dedicating it as the Julie Andrews Stage. Because that’s where both Mary Poppins and the Princess Diaries were filmed!

la tour studio disney

LEGENDS PLAZA

Maybe you’ve heard of Disney Legends, individuals who have made an impact on Disney films and parks. Did you know that there’s a ceremony to induct these legends and that they cast their hand prints in bronze? On The Lot all of these plaques are displayed in an area called Legends Plaza. It’s an open air patio with columns decorated with the plaques. It’s so special to be able to walk around and see how your hands measure up to some of your favorite actors and Imagineers. In the center of the plaza you’ll find the only Partners Statue (of Walt & Mickey) that you can get up close to, touch, and take your photo with.

It’s a really wonderful place to grab a coffee and just sit and take in how many legendary people are represented in the plaza. Get an up close and personal view of the famed Legends Award. If you look close enough at this amazing sculpture, you might find Cinderella’s Gus Gus! Don’t forget to look up at the striking architecture of the Team Disney building. There you’ll see the Seven Dwarfs holding up the roof. This is a nod to the fact that it was the profits from Snow White & the Seven Dwarfs that made building The Lot possible!

la tour studio disney

THE COMMISSARY

Sure, it’s just a cafeteria, but there is something inexplicably cool about getting to eat where Walt Disney did. And where current Disney employees eat every day! You somehow feel part of a special club. Plus, the food here is really good! There’s a sandwich station, a taco station, a salad bar, a grill with burgers and the like, plus several other stations where the hot offerings change daily. But there’s always one staple no matter what day of the week it is – every day the commissary serves up Walt’s Chili, the original recipe that Walt himself enjoyed all of the time! Where else are you going to get the chance to eat like Walt did?

la tour studio disney

WALT DISNEY ARCHIVES

Getting to see bits of Disney history is pretty special, and housed on The Lot is the Walt Disney Archives. And yes – you get to visit! In the lobby of their building the Archives does a rotating exhibit in display cases of some of their assets. Sometimes it relates to a movie, other times a character. Once when I visited there was a display on Disney shoes!

You can also enter the Archives reading room, where you’ll see a display of an original animator’s desk as well as other displays. One time I got to see the very first Mickey Mouse watch ever created! And if you’re lucky, they’ll even pull out one of Walt’s (many) Oscars for you to hold. It’s true – you can’t believe how heavy those things are!

la tour studio disney

WALT’S OFFICE

There are few places more breathtaking and special to me than Walt Disney’s office suite. Can you imagine being able to stand in the space where Walt worked? It’s really one of the most special opportunities. A few years ago the Walt Disney Archives restored Walt’s office suite on the third floor of the Old Animation building and now it can be visited on certain tours. You will get to step inside both of Walt’s offices – the Formal, where he entertained guests, and the Informal, where he actually got down to business.

You’ll see the piano the Sherman Brothers used to play songs for him. You’ll see his private kitchen – complete with working retractable wall! Every single thing in his office suite was restored by the archives exactly how Walt left it the last day he was there. I’m talking the exact number of paper clips, the location of all papers, and even the books on his book shelf. I’ve been lucky enough to visit several times and I never get over that feeling of awe. It’s incredibly special!

la tour studio disney

How to Get A Tour

The Walt Disney Studios actually isn’t open to the public, so unless you know someone who works there you can’t just pop in for a visit. However, recently there became two ways for the rest of us to be able to visit! D23, the official Disney fan club, now offers monthly tours of The Lot. You do need to be a member of the fan club, and then you’ll need to sign up for tickets. But then you’ll be treated to a multi-hour tour of The Lot and all of the special places I mentioned above.

la tour studio disney

The other is Adventures by Disney’s Backstage Magic tour. Guests on this Adventure spend a morning touring around The Lot. They learn all about the history, eating lunch in the commissary, and of course taking time to shop in the Studio store! That might be worth it alone to book this vacation, but then you’ll get to visit the Imagineering campus AND the Jim Henson studios. It is literally the ultimate backstage pass!

Have you been lucky enough to visit the Walt Disney Studios? If so, I’d love to hear your favorite memory in the comments below!

Alex Fischbeck

Hi Heather! I am so incredibly jealous that you were able to do this. Can I ask how? I’ve been researching and can’t figure out any way that I can tour it, especially since Adventures by Disney doesn’t have any trips until 2022 and D23 has no tour dates.

Heather Coursen

I know right now all tours to the Studio lot have been suspended due to Covid. However, in the past you were able to visit by booking a tour with a D23 membership, doing the Adventures by Disney Southern California tour, or by redeeming Disney Movie Rewards points for a tour. Hopefully you’ll be able to visit in the future!

Nelisse tig

Hi I just bought D23 tickets- where do they want us to park? Is there a parking structure

Sara Varney

Hi Nelisee, Did you buy tickets for the D23 Expo in Anaheim next August? The Anaheim Convention Center does have parking but the price is not included in your tickets.

Nelisse

Sorry I should have clarified- my bad- I purchased studio tour tickets thru D23 to tour the Burbank Lot- do they have parking onsite for visitors?

Yes, there is parking for official visitors on the studio lot. Have fun!

Amber Clark

I just purchased a D23 tour for February. I have a couple of questions. First, how much time do you have to shop in the Disney Studio Store and Employee Center? Also, are you able to eat at the studio after the tour ends? Lastly, do they rush you out at the end or are they somewhat flexible with the time they give you? TIA!

I have not done the D23 Studio Tour yet, just with Adventures by Disney. I believe they are similar! We had just a few minutes to shop and we were able to eat at the commissary. The timing is quite stric and guests are not given time to explore on their own.

Hope this helps!

Studio Tours in Los Angeles

Four major studios spread around town sell daily tours for visitors. On all but Universal Studios' tours, you will usually be able to go onto the set of a show that is currently in production. For film buffs, our favorites are the last two. Universal Studios  in Universal City offers daily 1-hour tram tours of its studio lot as part of the general admission price to the amusement park, which is open from 9am to 7pm in the summer and from 10am to 6pm in the winter. Bonus: You'll get to see the Wizarding World of Harry Potter as part of your ticket. www.universalstudioshollywood.com

Sony Pictures  in Culver City also does tours, but its lot has gone through several owners, so you'll see little of the old MGM days an more about the current Sony franchises. Book via www.sonypicturesstudiostours.com .

The last two have the most intact history on display. Paramount  in Hollywood does tours that combine walking with golf cart transportation. Book via Paramount Studio Tour ( www.paramountstudiotour.com ).

Warner Bros . in Burbank has tours of its backlot and soundstages conducted on small-group golf carts. The entire experience takes three hours and should be pre-booked via  www.wbstudiotour.com .

The Walt Disney Studios in Burbank does not regularly open to the public, but Adventures By Disney often includes tours into expensive 5-day vacation packages that also include time at Disneyland Resort.

Note : This information was accurate when it was published, but can change without notice. Please be sure to confirm all rates and details directly with the companies in question before planning your trip.

Studio tours in Los Angeles for behind-the-scenes moviemaking magic

Check out these studio tours in L.A. for a behind-the-scenes look at how movies and TV shows come to life

Michael Juliano

Embark on a studio tour and you’ll discover what Angelenos already know: (Almost) everything is filmed in L.A. That quiet East Coast cul-de-sac? A fake residential block at Universal Studios. That New York cityscape? The backlot at Warner Bros. Studios. An elaborate sci-fi ship? That would be a soundstage at Sony Pictures Studios. When L.A.’s  beaches , scenic hillsides and aesthetically diverse neighborhoods can’t quite cut it, productions set up shop at one of the city’s studios—and some of the biggest ones have opened their gates for tours. From  Culver City  to  Hollywood , take a peek behind the soundstage doors with these studio tours in Los Angeles.

An email you’ll actually love

Warner Bros. Studio Tour Hollywood

Warner Bros. Studio Tour Hollywood

  • Things to do
  • Walks and tours
  • price 2 of 4

Warner Bros.’ guided tram tour zips through the studio’s sizeable footprint—110 acres on the Valley-side of the Hollywood Hills—with about a dozen other passengers onboard. It’s an encyclopedic tour of all types of filming locations, with a journey through the backlot’s city stand-ins and Gilmore Girls -starring residential square, as well as a stops inside a soundstage and at a few museum-caliber displays of props. Though you’ll spend some time simply navigating the sprawling grid of soundstages, you’ll also stop and venture on foot with memorable photo ops: a seat on the couch at Friends’ Central Perk or The Big Bang Theory’s  Apartment 4A, an opportunity to mount a Harry Potter broomstick and the chance to come face to face with almost every Batmobile imaginable.

For fans of: Ellen , Conan , The Big Bang Theory , Friends , Harry Potter , Batman ,  Aquaman ,  Wonder Woman ,  Crazy Rich Asians ,  Looney Tunes

You won’t find anywhere else: A dedicated studio museum, and by far the most to see on any studio tour.

  • price 3 of 4

While Universal Studios’ tram tour is technically an amusement park attraction—which means you’ll have to stomach the hefty price of admission—it manages to combine the look of a living, working studio with entertaining theme park polish. The tour mixes live narration and pre-recorded bits as you cart through backlot sets of New York, a mutt of European villages, the Old West and familiar movie landmarks—most impressively the 747 crash site from  War of the Worlds . The majority of live filming is securely tucked away—and if it’s not, expect portions of the backlot to be chopped off of your experience—but Universal compensates with preplanned encounters that mimic special effects: a wet and fiery earthquake simulation, a sudden flash flood and that delightfully rubbery, toothy grin on the face of Bruce—a.k.a.  Jaws . While the 3-D motion simulation that replaced the iconically campy (and burned down) King Kong section is a welcome technical upgrade, the tunnel lacks the same immersion and charm of the original—the same can sadly be said for the similarly dizzying and ill-executed Fast & Furious: Supercharged segment.

For fans of: Psycho , The Fast and the Furious , all things Steven Spielberg

You won’t find anywhere else: Rubber sharks, CGI gorillas and plenty of pyro.

Up to 1hr, $109–$139 theme park admission

Sony Pictures Studio Tour

Sony Pictures Studio Tour

  • Culver City

As you pass through the studio gates on this walking tour, you’re immediately greeted by Tony Tasset’s arching  Rainbow  sculpture—a nod to the studio’s past as the home of  The Wizard of Oz . The lot’s footprint has been significantly downsized since then, when it was known as the iconic MGM Studios; virtually all of its colorful backlot sets are now gone with the wind. But the magnolia tree-lined sidewalks and clean, white Art Deco facades provide a pleasant ambience that the other industrial-edged studios lack. A leisurely pace allows time to peer through the elephant doors of a soundstage and look out for passing celebrities. The tour skews toward contemporary productions—the bullet-riddled RV from  Breaking Bad , a stock car from  Talladega Nights  and a stop in the studios for  Jeopardy  or  Wheel of Fortune —but there are still plenty of small moments where that old moviemaking charm endures.

For fans of:   The Wizard of Oz ,  Singin’ in the Rain ,  Ben-Hur ,  Spiderman ,  Breaking Bad ,  Talladega Nights ,  Jeopardy ,  Wheel of Fortune

You won’t find anywhere else:  The acoustic bliss during a stop in a foley studio. 2hrs, $50

Paramount Pictures Studio Tour

Paramount Pictures Studio Tour

Believe it or not, Paramount is the last major studio to keep its headquarters located in Hollywood—and the only one there to open its doors to the public. Inside the famous wrought iron gate, you’ll be treated to a guided tram tour through the prop house and a sizable New York backlot. Of particular note, there’s the open-air Blue Sky Tank, which holds almost one million gallons of water to film anything from surfing scenes to maritime disasters.

For fans of:   This Is Us, Grace and Frankie ,  Dr. Phil

You won’t find anywhere else:  A seasonal after-dark tour that takes a macabre walk through moviemaking history and the neighboring Hollywood Forever Cemetery .

What can’t you see?

What can’t you see?

Some of the biggest and most exciting studios are open to public tours, but you may be scratching your head at some big name omissions. CBS Television City (which has been solf for future redevlopment) technically doesn’t offer tours, but there are tons of  TV shows  that film there everyday for which you can secure tickets. NBC’s famous Burbank studio tour was discontinued in 2012 after most of its productions had migrated to Universal City—notable holdout  The Tonight Show  fled the lot for New York in 2014. Sunset Gower and Sunset Bronson (the locations of the original Warner Brothers and Columbia studios, respectively) are closed to the public, but you can get a fantastic oral history from the  Felix in Hollywood Tour . Similarly,  Siren Studios ,  L.A. Center Studios ,  the Jim Henson Company Lot  and the 20th Century Fox Studios are for serious business only, though all have been known to host the occasional public-facing event. And not to stomp all over your childhood dreams, but unless you know an employee, don’t plan on getting inside the gates at the Walt Disney Studios or Nickelodeon’s Burbank animation studio.

A tram accident at Universal Studios Hollywood injured 15 riders on Saturday night, authorities said.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department units were dispatched shortly after 9 p.m. PT to the theme park, the department said in a social media post . A total of 15 people sustained minor injuries and were transported to a local hospital.

In a statement to Variety , a Universal Studios Hollywood spokesperson confirmed “there was a tram incident at the theme park tonight that resulted in multiple minor injuries.”

Popular on Variety

The cause of the crash is still under investigation, but “alcohol and drugs are not considered to be a factor in this crash,” the CPH said.

A spokesperson for Universal Studios Hollywood issued another statement, saying, “Our thoughts continue to be with the guests who were involved, and we are thankful that based on agency reports, the injuries sustained were minor. We are working closely with public agencies, including the California Highway Patrol, as we continue our review of the incident and safety remains a top priority. We have resumed Studio Tour operations with a modified route and are reinforcing our operational and safety protocols.”

Universal Studios Hollywood operates multi-car trams for its World-Famous Studio Tour. The one-hour tour takes visitors behind the scenes of the Universal Studios lot, where films and television shows like “Nope,” “Back to the Future,” “Desperate Housewives,” “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” and more were filmed. The ride is also known for King Kong 360 3-D, one of the world’s largest 3-D experiences, and the “Jaws” shark attack. Universal Studios Hollywood is celebrating the 60th anniversary of the attraction beginning next week.

Universal Studios tram tossed “multiple” riders to the ground, accident investigators say

A tram vehicle at Universal Studios Hollywood threw “multiple” riders to the ground after it struck a guardrail near props from the “Jurassic Park” film franchise in an accident that is under investigation by the California Highway Patrol.

Details of the accident that took place Saturday night — amid the 60th anniversary of the attraction — remain sketchy, but the CHP said the agency has determined that drugs and alcohol were not a factor in the crash that injured 15 park visitors.

For the record:

3:01 p.m. April 22, 2024 An earlier version of this article said 15 riders on the Universal Studios Hollywood tram attraction were thrown to the ground. The California Highway Patrol said “multiple” riders were thrown to the ground and that a total of 15 were injured.

The tram was driving through the storied Universal Studios back lot shortly after 9 p.m. when the crash occurred, according to authorities.

The linked tram cars passed by a set of props from the “Jurassic Park” film franchise when the tram driver turned onto Avenue M and for some unknown reason the last car in the procession collided with the metal guardrail on the right side, the CHP said. This caused the tram to “tilt and eject multiple passengers from the tram,” authorities said in a news release.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department received a call for service shortly after 9 p.m. for the crash and 15 passengers were transported to a hospital with minor to moderate injuries.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department also responded to the scene but the CHP is the lead agency, a Universal Studios spokesperson said.

March 28, 2024

“Our thoughts continue to be with the guests who were involved, and we are thankful that based on agency reports, the injuries sustained were minor,” Universal Studios said in a statement.

The theme park is working closely with authorities as Universal Studios continues its “review of the incident and safety remains a top priority.”

The Studio Tour tram ride, which is celebrating its 60th anniversary this week, will continue to operate with a modified route and the theme park will reinforce its “operational and safety protocols.”

The status of the injured passengers was unclear as of Monday.

In many ways, the tram ride came to define the theme park.

Over the years, countless riders have enjoyed close encounters with a robotic shark depicting the blood-thirsty animal in the movie “Jaws,” a terrifying stop outside the Bates Motel from the film classic “Psycho” and a harrowing escape from the clutches of King Kong.

Newer film franchises have joined the tour, including a stroll through a suburban neighborhood wasted by aliens from the 2005 film “War of the Worlds” to a western-themed sideshow from Jordan Peele’s 2022 movie “Nope.”

The tram tour got its start in 1964 when Universal Studios executives noticed that food sales at the studio commissary shot up after local tour buses were allowed past the studio gates to let fans get a glimpse of the back lot movie sets and props.

The first iteration of the attraction were the pink-and-white Glamour Trams, which carried about 38,200 riders in the first year. Passengers paid $2.50 for a two-and-a-half hour tour that included stops to see a stunt show and a movie makeup exhibition.

How the Universal Studios tram tour defined the modern theme park

The most important theme park ride ever created? It may just be the Universal Studios tram tour, which dates to the silent film era. Once primarily a behind-the-scenes tour, the trek has evolved to define the modern theme park.

Aug. 3, 2023

Later renamed the Universal Studios Studio Tour, the trams have since endured real life fires, labor strife, a series of expansions and at least one fatal accident.

The theme park launched a renovation project in 2022 to begin converting the diesel-hydraulic powered vehicles to run on electricity to reduce emissions. It is not clear if the tram that struck the guard rail was a newer electric vehicle or an older version.

This is not the first time an accident happened at the theme park. In 1986, a park employee was run over by the tram during a special Halloween “Fright Nights” show . Paul Rebalde, 20, was stationed on a parked tram filled with mannequins dressed to look like corpses, the Sheriff’s Department said at the time.

While in costume, Rebalde was to leap from among the mannequins on the parked tram and frighten people passing on moving trams, but was trapped between the third and fourth sections of one of the four-section moving trams and was run over and dragged to his death, according to authorities. The Halloween-themed attraction was paused for several years and later rebranded “Halloween Horror Nights.”

More recently, a stunt performer was hospitalized after performing in the “Waterworld” show in January 2023 . The performer was set on fire shortly before taking a leap off a tower in the show’s finale. The “Waterworld: A Live Sea War Spectacular” show is inspired by the 1995 Kevin Costner film and opened months after the movie’s debut.

Movie and film modern retro vintage poster background.

It was another tumultuous year in Hollywood thanks to the dual labor strikes in 2023, the fallout on the film pipeline and the box office remaining below pre-COVID pandemic levels, among other factors.

Keep in mind that financial disclosures for these units remain limited and are not easily comparable. The names alone vary: Paramount reports figures for its Filmed Entertainment unit, Warner Bros. Discovery and Comcast post results for their Studios divisions, and Sony has its Pictures unit. The businesses included in them differ as well. For instance, Sony’s Pictures segment includes TV networks. And Sony and others include their TV studios in the division.

And not all studios operations use the same accounting methodology, which makes direct comparisons difficult.

The annual Studio Profit Report also includes an educative look at Disney, even though it doesn’t disclose figures for its film or studios operations per se. THR is instead looking at Disney’s “content sales/licensing and other” financials, which observers say provide the closest comparable. Also, the figures below are for the calendar years 2023 and 2022, even though Disney and Sony have fiscal years that don’t align with the calendar year, and their executive teams manage their businesses with an eye on the fiscal year.

With all those caveats in mind as the backdrop, here’s a closer look at the bottom line of the film business in a time of fast-paced change. (See also: The Streaming Profit Report .)

NBCUniversal

Profit: $1.3B +35% year-over-year Revenue: $11.6B -6% year-over-year

Super! X-large! The puns for Universal’s celebration of a year, in which it went nuclear (!) on the box office were manifold.

“Other revenue,” consisting of the sale of physical and digital home entertainment products, as well as the production and licensing of live stage plays and the distribution of content produced by third parties, climbed 1 percent to $1.3 billion. But one revenue category, content licensing, fell in 2023, to the tune of 12 percent, to $8.2 billion.

Universal cited “the timing of when content was made available by our television studios under licensing agreements, including the impact of the Writers Guild and SAG work stoppages in the current year, partially offset by the timing of when content was made available by our film studios.”

The studio unit’s bottom line was, however, helped by a more than 8 percent decline in expenses, led by a more than 9 percent drop in programming and production to just below $8 billion, helped by the strikes; a 7 percent decrease in marketing and promotion to below $1.6 billion; and a minimal decline in other costs to $818 million.

Comcast president Michael Cavanagh recently touted the studio’s strong talent relationships. “We are proud to work alongside our creative partners like Christopher Nolan, Chris Meledandri and Jason Blum, who are innovative industry leaders, to develop content that continues to delight audiences,” he said on the latest earnings conference call.

Comcast management has also highlighted the studio segment as one of its six growth drivers, which also include Peacock, theme parks, as well as residential broadband, wireless and business services. Predicts Peter Supino, analyst at Wolfe Research: “The ‘Big 6’ growth businesses should exhibit solid revenue growth again in 2024 and beyond, more than offsetting legacy declines to produce 4 percent EBITDA growth in ’24.”

Warner Bros. Discovery

Profit:   $2.2B -19% year-over-year Revenue:   $12.2B -12% year-over-year

It was think pink for Warner Bros. Discovery in 2023, even if its Studios unit saw its black ink shrink.

Warner’s Margot Robbie blockbuster Barbie led the box office in 2023 with $1.44 billion in worldwide revenue for the year, providing a big chunk of the studio’s $3.94 billion in total global theatrical revenue, up 61 percent from 2022.

The low-budget horror movie The Nun II was also a profitable success and Wonka found its audience, but DC blockbusters, such as  Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom  and The Flash , underperformed at the box office.

Hogwarts Legacy boosted the studio’s gaming revenue and profit for the year, while TV revenue was down, affecting the bottom line.

Studios earnings took a nearly 20 percent hit, affected by the lower revenue and higher marketing expenses for a larger theatrical release slate, 13 movies compared to seven in 2022, and Hogwarts Legacy , “partially offset by lower TV content expense, commensurate with lower revenues.”

Still, WBD’s studios segment again brought in the biggest profit among Hollywood conglomerates, just like in 2022, 2021 and 2020.

A lack of 2024 guidance by WBD management spooked some on Wall Street, though. “Limited revenue disclosure across TV, film, and games products, theatrical, home entertainment, and licensing revenues, drives additional uncertainty in forecasting,” argued Morgan Stanley analyst Benjamin Swinburne in a recent report.

But Bank of America analyst Jessica Reif Ehrlich touted “several potential drivers that could improve the fundamentals of WBD’s business.” In terms on the studios segment, those include “a return of TV productions back toward pre-strike levels, increasing licensing of their deep valuable library, an improving film slate,” and “continued growth in the gaming business.”

Paramount Global

Profit: -$119M -144% year-over-year Revenue: $3.0B -19%  year-over-year

Blame Maverick! Paramount’s top theatrical performer of 2023 was Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One , which brought in $567 million worldwide last year, about a quarter of the studio’s $2.09 billion worldwide box office haul in 2023. Management also touted five No. 1 debuts at the domestic box office. But added together, they couldn’t match the power of Top Gun: Maverick .

The studio released eight films in 2023, the lowest number of all Hollywood giants, but just as many as in 2022. Among them were also the likes of Transformers: Rise of the Beasts , PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie , Scream VI , Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves and Killers of the Flower Moon .

However, the company’s theatrical revenue of $813 million ended up 34 percent below 2022, while licensing and other revenue dropped 14 percent to $2.12 billion. Paramount’s overall filmed entertainment revenue fell 20 percent, which “primarily reflects lower theatrical and licensing revenues, driven by the success of  Top Gun: Maverick  in 2022,” the company said.

Management highlighted how much theatrical drives various other parts of Paramount’s business.

Turtles and PAW Patrol “had successful feature films,” Paramount CEO Bob Bakish said on the company’s third-quarter earnings conference call. “Films which also drove a broader ecosystem of consumption on linear, streaming and at retail. And we look forward to future extensions, including the release of a new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle series next year and a third PAW Patrol movie in 2026.”

Bakish noted on a recent earnings call, “As we move into 2024, we’re focused on producing content more efficiently and magnifying the impact of our slate. We’re improving return on investment (ROI) by lowering the average cost per title. This, by balancing high-budget tentpoles with more modest-cost titles, like Mean Girls and Bob Marley: One Love , improving the financial return on the overall slate.”

The analyst team at MoffettNathanson forecasts 5 percent revenue growth at Paramount’s Filmed Entertainment unit in 2024 to $3.1 billion, with its bottom line swinging back to a slight profit estimated at $20 million. For 2025 and 2026, the experts expect that to grow to $85 million and $100 million, respectively.

Sony Pictures

Profit: $719M -18% year-over-year Revenue: $10.3B +2% year-over-year

The studio’s biggest 2023 blockbuster was Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse , whose box office revenue reached $691 million to make it the studio’s highest-grossing animated film ever.

Other successes of the year included The Equalizer 3 and A Man Called Otto , while Gran Turismo and Napoleon underperformed expectations.

All in all, motion picture revenue fell 12 percent, including drops of 9 percent in theatrical, 31 percent in home entertainment, 6 percent in TV and more than 5 percent in streaming.

Sony’s TV Productions arm, though, managed to shine with a 15 percent revenue gain thanks to such hit shows as The Last of Us , Twisted Metal , the final season of The Crown and The Night Agent , and media networks revenue climbed 4 percent.

But despite the overall slight revenue gain, Sony’s Pictures unit posted a bottom line decline of 18 percent despite growth in three of the four quarters of calendar year 2023.

The culprit: a roughly 70 percent operating income drop in the second calendar year quarter due to such factors as “lower television and digital streaming service licensing revenues” after the year-ago period had “benefited from the contribution of several franchise films released theatrically in fiscal year 2021” and an “increase in marketing expenses in motion pictures in support of a greater number of theatrical releases.”

Profit:  -$666M (the loss widened sharply from -$20M in 2022) Revenue: $7.8B -8% year-over-year

The Mouse House is working on turning around its creative fortunes.

Disney had a slew of top 10 hits at the worldwide box office among its 17 releases of 2023, including Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, the No. 4 with $846 million; No. 7, The Little Mermaid ($570 million); No. 9, Elemental ($496 million); and No. 10, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania ($476 million). It all added up to more than $4.8 billion, but that was down slightly from $4.9 billion in 2022 and meant the studio had to yield the worldwide box office crown to Universal.

Disney’s revenue for the 12 months of 2023 in this content segment dropped 8 percent, while its loss multiplied.

TV/SVOD distribution results were affected by lower sales volume of film and episodic TV content, which “included the impact of the shift from licensing our content to third parties to distributing it on our DTC streaming services,” the company said.

Plus, in its earnings reports last year, Disney repeatedly pointed to weaker theatrical performances than in 2022, including for The Haunted Mansion compared to Thor: Love and Thunder , or The Marvels and Wish compared to Black Panther: Wakanda Forever , Avatar: The Way of Water and Strange World in the prior-year period.

Disney CEO Bob Iger is focusing on “reinvigorating our creativity” and output. “Let’s not lose sight of the fact that in the last year, the studio had some real success, not to suggest that we didn’t have some films that were not successful, that we were really disappointed in,” Iger said on the latest earnings call. “Volume sometimes can be detrimental to quality. And in our zeal to greatly increase volume, partially tied to wanting to chase more global subs for our streaming platform, some of our studios lost a little focus. So the first step that we’ve taken is that we’ve reduced volume, we’ve reduced output, particularly at Marvel.”

Universal Studios tram riders were seriously injured in crash, lawyer says

A passenger on a Universal Studios tram car that crashed into a guardrail on Saturday estimates the ride reached speeds up to 20 to 25 mph after the driver apparently lost control of the tram, which is much faster than the usual slow pace of the attraction, according to the man's attorney.

Fifteen passengers aboard the tram received "minor to moderate injuries" after the ride crashed shortly after 9 p.m., the California Highway Patrol said in a report. The linked tram cars had passed by a set of props from the "Jurassic Park" film franchise when the tram driver turned onto Avenue M, and for some unknown reason the last car in the procession collided with the metal guardrail on the right side, the CHP said. This caused the tram to "tilt and eject multiple passengers from the tram," authorities said in the report.

Details of the accident that took place Saturday night — amid the 60th anniversary of the tram ride — remain unclear, but the CHP said the agency has determined that drugs and alcohol were not a factor.

Attorney Steven Dhillon, who represents two adults and an 11-year-old girl injured in the crash, said that one of his adult clients sustained a brain injury after her head hit a metal or plexiglass frame on the tram car.

"She woke up sick with nausea and was vomiting the next morning," Dhillon said by phone.

After she went to the hospital the following morning, she was told there was bleeding in her brain, according to Dhillon, who did not make his clients available to The Times to discuss their injuries or disclose their names.

Another Dhillon client in the last tram car said that it appeared the driver lost control while going downhill, allowing the tram to accelerate rapidly as the passengers screamed, the attorney said. The guest said the crash exacerbated pain from previous knee and spine surgeries, according to Dhillon, who did not disclose his client's age.

On Saturday, Lt. Maria Abal with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said there appeared to be an issue with the tram's brakes. While the Sheriff's Department responded to the scene of the crash, the CHP is the lead agency in the investigation, a Universal Studios spokesperson said. The CHP has not released the findings of its investigation.

"Our thoughts continue to be with the guests who were involved, and we are thankful that based on agency reports, the injuries sustained were minor," Universal Studios said in a statement.

The theme park said it was working closely with authorities as it continues its own review of the incident, adding that "safety remains a top priority."

While the initial reports of injuries appeared minimal, the long-lasting effects of the crash will likely continue to develop over the next several months, Dhillon said. He is currently discussing the situation with Universal Studios.

A spokesperson for Universal Studios did not respond to requests for comment on Dhillon's claims.

The Studio Tour tram ride will continue to operate with a modified route and the theme park will reinforce its "operational and safety protocols."

In many ways, the tram ride came to define the theme park.

Over the years, countless riders have enjoyed close encounters with a robotic shark depicting the bloodthirsty star of the movie "Jaws," a terrifying stop outside the Bates Motel from the film classic "Psycho" and a harrowing escape from the clutches of King Kong.

Newer film franchises have joined the tour, including a stroll through a suburban neighborhood wasted by aliens from the 2005 film "War of the Worlds" and a western-themed sideshow from Jordan Peele's 2022 movie "Nope."

The tram tour got its start in 1964 when Universal Studios executives noticed that food sales at the studio commissary shot up after local tour buses were allowed past the studio gates to let fans get a glimpse of the backlot movie sets and props.

The first iteration of the attraction were the pink-and-white Glamour Trams, which carried about 38,200 riders in the first year. Passengers paid $2.50 for a 2½-hour tour that included stops to see a stunt show and a movie makeup exhibition.

Later renamed the Universal Studios Studio Tour, the trams have since endured real-life fires, labor strife, a series of expansions and at least one fatal accident.

In 1986, a park employee was run over by the tram during a special Halloween "Fright Nights” show . Paul Rebalde, 20, was stationed on a parked tram filled with mannequins dressed to look like corpses, the Sheriff's Department said at the time.

While in costume, Rebalde was to leap from among the mannequins on the parked tram and frighten people passing on moving trams. But the stunt went wrong when Rebalde jumped and became trapped between the third and fourth sections of one four-section tram, was run over and dragged to his death, according to authorities. The Halloween-themed attraction was paused for several years and later rebranded "Halloween Horror Nights."

More recently, a stunt performer was hospitalized after performing in the "Waterworld" show in January 2023 . The performer was set on fire shortly before taking a leap off a tower in the show's finale. The "Waterworld: A Live Sea War Spectacular" show is inspired by the 1995 Kevin Costner film and opened months after the movie's debut.

UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif. (AP) — More than a dozen people suffered mostly minor injuries when a tram used for tours crashed into a railing at Universal Studios Hollywood near Los Angeles, authorities and the company said.

Los Angeles County Fire Department units responded shortly after 9 p.m. Saturday to the theme park in Universal City, about 10 miles (16 kilometers) northwest of downtown LA, the agency said in a social media post.

The California Highway Patrol said that while the tram was negotiating a turn, its last car collided with a metal guardrail, “causing it to tilt and eject multiple passengers.”

The fire department said 15 people were taken to hospitals with minor injuries. The highway patrol’s statement on Sunday said some of the injuries were moderate, but didn’t specify a number.

Universal Studios Hollywood said in a statement Sunday afternoon that tours have resumed with a modified route.

“Our thoughts continue to be with the guests who were involved, and we are thankful that based on agency reports, the injuries sustained were minor. We are working closely with public agencies, including the California Highway Patrol, as we continue our review of the incident and safety remains a top priority,” the statement said.

The highway patrol, which is leading the investigation, said alcohol and drugs were not considered a factor.

The tram circuit, called the World-Famous Studio Tour, offers a glimpse behind the scenes of Universal movies including “Jaws” and Jordan Peele’s “Nope.” The theme park will celebrate the 60th anniversary of the tour starting Friday.
