The nib of a fountain pen is the metal part that actually touches the paper. The width and firmness of the nib, combined with the way you hold a pen, as well as your choice of ink and paper, will determine how the writing style of your pen will look. The LAMY  safari is a workhorse pen, known throughout the fountain pen community for its ruggedness, reliability, and no-nonsense functionality. The triangular grip makes it great for those starting out who have no idea how to hold a fountain pen, but it's used and loved by fountain pen lovers of all levels of experience.

The  safari comes with an interchangeable silver steel nib, which can be easily swapped out for another size. This fountain pen comes with a blue LAMY ink cartridge so you can get started writing right away.

If you'd like to use bottled fountain pen ink, you can also purchase a LAMY Z28 converter. Note: To ensure quality performance, LAMY tests their pens as a final step in manufacturing. If you happen to see any residual blue ink, rest assured that this is normal.

How do i fill a fountain pen with ink 8eda1617-f73a-4daf-8245-6d2bf4abeb7b.

It depends on the pen's filling mechanism, which you can find in the Technical Specs section above. 

Here's a quick definition of the most common filling mechanisms:

• Cartridge - A small, disposable, sealed plastic reservoir that holds fountain pen ink. These come pre-filled with ink, and typically you just push to insert them into place and you'll be ready to write! Check out our quick guide here .
• Converter - A detachable and refillable ink reservoir that allows you to use bottled ink in a cartridge-accepting pen. Typically you will install the converter into the grip section, dip the nib/feed into the ink, and twist or pull the converter knob to draw ink into the converter. Here's a video for how to fill a cartridge/converter pen using a LAMY pen as an example.
• Eyedropper - A pen that utilizes the entire barrel as a reservoir for ink. Ink is directly filled into the barrel, allowing for a high ink capacity. Here's a video on how to do it!
• Piston - A type of filling system that uses a retracting plunger inside a sealed tube to draw ink into a pen. They are typically either twist or push-operated. These pens cannot accept cartridges or a converter, and only fill from bottled ink.
• Vacuum - A push-style piston that uses pressure to fill the large pen body with ink. They seal the ink chamber when closed, making it ideal for flying without risk of leaking. Check out our video on how to use a vac filler here .

It depends on the filling mechanism, but it mostly comes down to flushing it out with water, and sometimes a little bit of Pen Flush if the ink is really stuck. 

It's a bit easier to show than to tell, so we've put together a few quick videos showing you the process:

How often do I need to clean my fountain pen? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

We recommend a good cleaning every 2 weeks, and any time you change ink colors. 

Water will usually do the trick, but we recommend you use our Goulet Pen Flush if the ink has been left in the pen for a while and could have dried up, or when you’re switching ink colors.

My pen won’t write! What do I do? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

First things first... make sure you have ink in the pen! Be sure that the ink cartridge or converter is seated properly in the pen, and that you aren't out of ink.

We always recommend you give your pen a good cleaning first, using our Goulet Pen Flush , or a drop of dish soap in some water. New pens often have some machining oil residue left in the feed, so a good cleaning often does the trick first.

If that still doesn't work, try priming the feed. This consists of either dipping your pen nib and feed in ink, or forcing ink from the converter down into the feed.

Fountain pen with cartridge filling system with blue ink cartridge supplied. Polished steel nib.

Use Lamy T10 cartridges, or the optional Lamy Z28 converter available separately, for bottled ink.

Best Color Ink For Yellow Paper

I have a huge amount of Levenger yellow pad paper that I got on clearance. I currently use Pelikan 4001 and a Pelikan Souveran FP. I'm getting tired of the black on yellow. To spice up my FP life, I'm considering other colors like brown to use on the yellow paper. I do a ton of writing on it, so it should be a good ink to use regularly for fast writing. Has anyone used the brown Pelikan 4001 on yellow paper? How does it look?

I really like brown ink on yellow paper! I prefer Waterman Havana Brown over Pelikan Brown for this kind of writing.

+1 for brown ink on yellow. A nice dark brown like Diamine Saddle Brown looks nice to me.

I also like to use BSB and Herbin's Eclat de Saphir on yellow.

Reds don't look so nice on yellow to me.

Brown does look nice on yellow paper but I also like ink that matches the lines. Usually that's a blue-black like Diamine, Waterman, or Sailor for me. All of them dry fast enough to be well-suited to the task but there are plenty of others from which to choose.

I write on poor hospital paper everyday and itis yellow. i have found that Noodler's Walnut and Widomaker are very handsome. Another thought is a deep purple like MB Violet and La Colour Royale by Noodlers

I use yellow notepads all the time for writing my lectures. I think that green (Waterman Green) and Waterman South Sea Blue work well - enough contrast but also aesthetically pleasing.

I'd lean towards a Turquoise-Blue such as the much-admired Waterman South Sea Blue.

I believe that most inks you might encounter have a degree of transparency that allow the colour of the paper to show-through the ink, hence 'mixing' those two colours.

I would be careful with Brown, as I found with the Cd'A Grand Canyon: the ink may become unseated. It may be desirable to seek a Brown that is heavily saturated, dark, and with little or any shading. (I'd look to Private Reserve Browns - many of their inks are quite highly saturated, so you might choose to dilute them to get the exact density/transparency you wish.)

But to back-up a bit: the paper is likely not all that FP friendly (??) so check the Reviews to ensure the suggested ink/s do not feather, bleed-through or show-through.

Also, the paper colour is very active/animated, so the ink colour should not generate an edge effect, and the density (light-dark) should not be too different - the ink+paper pairing should generate legibility by difference of colour - not so much by difference in density.

The only time you have too much fuel is when you're on fire.

I'm not sure what ink I'd use. The browns sound good. I'd probably also try blues and greens. Purple doesn't sound good, right across the color wheel. Orange and red would be too hard to look at. Now, would grey do it?

Another saturated brown to consider is Diamine Chocolate Brown. I don't know how yellow your paper is but Diamine Chocolate is my favourite on Post-It notes. For more subtle yellow paper I might be tempted by Herbin Café des Iles, which has very nice shading.

Has anyone used the brown Pelikan 4001 on yellow paper? How does it look?

The writing paper that I get at work is yellow, legal size and FP friendly, I have used Waterman Havana on it which looks quite acceptable.

Thanks for all the suggestions. For brown I've ordered Waterman Havana Brown. The lines on the pale yellow pad are gray, so for gray I ordered Iroshizuku Fuyu-Syogun. I have vacation after next week, so I can try them out without having to write fast and furiously. I love a world of choices!

I reported the spam that a mod has now made disappear so that now nobody has to see it. I never thought I had to explain that. Saying I reported it keeps other people from sending the mods repetetive reports.

A nice dark brown looks very professional. It's crisp, yet still has a bit of personality to it. My go-to brown is Waterman Havana.

There is some yellow work paper which Iroshizuku is really wasted upon.

Anyone got a scan of brown on yellow? I have a bottle of Visconti sepia/brown just sitting there but am loathe to ink an entire pen out just to use it at work. Last time I did that, I realised Pouissiere de Lune probably wasn't quite professional enough...

i would recommend a blue-black/midnight blue and a deep dark brown. if you'd like to see a greenish hue to the shading of the blue then no need to use too dark of a blue. make sure the brown is deep enough to contrast to the yellow paper otherwise the brown will come out too light, unless you prefer that look.

Alviso Marina County Park | San Jose, CA

Join park staff aboard a boat to explore the community of animals, plants, and people that call San Francisco Bay home. Discover our region’s natural history and how we have shaped – and protected – our shoreline over time. Participants must be at least 8 years old, and the program is FREE. 

Note: Masks are recommended but not required.

1) What is the minimum age requirement to attend the program? Are there any restrictions?

Participants must be at least 8 years old. Getting on the boat requires walking onto the floating launch ramps, which lack handrails for support and can exhibit instability. All participants will be required to sign a Release of Liability Waiver. Please take a few moments to read, print, and sign the waiver in advance . Parents or legal guardians will need to sign on behalf of accompanying minors. 

2) When and where should I arrive?

Please arrive at least  fifteen (15)  minutes prior to the tour start time. All unclaimed seats, including reserved seats, will open up to the general public on a first-come, first-served basis  FIVE (5)  minutes prior to launch. The tour meets at the launch ramp at Alviso Marina County Park, 1195 Hope Street, Alviso, CA 95002.

3) What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the tour?

The 58 bus stops at Liberty and Taylor, and is about a 0.5 mile walk from Alviso Marina County Park. If arriving via car, there is a large parking lot with plenty of free parking. 

4) What can I bring into the event?

Alcohol is NOT permitted on the boat. Dogs are also not allowed, for the safety and comfort of all participants involved, and out of respect for the sanctuary status of the Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge. Trained ADA service animals are permitted.

Small items should be secured on your person or in a small bag/container to be stowed in a small space beneath each bench. Please note that storage is extremely limited. Large, bulky items, such as backpacks, will not fit under the benches and will need to be left onshore in your personal vehicles to ensure aisles and pathways are kept clear of any hazards. We do not allow snacks on the boat to reduce the potential for polluting the waterway. 

Dress comfortably with sturdy shoes, sun protection, and layers to account for variable weather conditions. Please make sure items like sunglasses and hats can be secured so they won't fly off during the boat tour. Again, weather conditions can vary greatly, from extreme cold, wind, to prolonged sun exposure, sea spray, and choppy waters. 

5) What kind of boat will we be on?

The boat is a pontoon-style catamaran with un-padded bench seating. In order to provide the best possible views on the tour, the boat does not have a roof or a shade structure.

7) Can I bring a class out on the tour?

If you are an educator for grades 6+ and would like to bring your class out on the slough, visit PARKHERE.ORG and check out our Education Programs page for the "Exploring Our Changing Bay" field trip opportunity. Or, if you want to bring a class out and run your own program on our boat, see the "Floating Classroom" option on the same page. The latter is especially suited for college classes.

8) Anything else?

The staff of Santa Clara County Parks makes the safety of our visitors a priority. Any actions or behaviors that the Park Ranger deems unsafe (putting the safety of others at risk or compromising the integrity of the vessel) could warrant exclusion from the tour or even early termination of the tour. The tour may be cancelled due to unforeseen adverse weather conditions the day of the tour. Cancellation due to predicted weather events will usually be communicated at least one day in advance.
