Announce debut album ‘ Approach to Anima’ Out May 26th on Guruguru Brain
Guruguru Brain are excited to announce the release of the debut album from Maya Ongaku, ‘Approach to Anima’ , set for release on May 29th . The first single from the album, “Nuska” is online now. Hailing from the seaside communities surrounding Enoshima, a small island located 50 km southwest of Tokyo, Maya Ongaku is a ragtag collective of local musicians whose brand of earthy psychedelia transcends widely beyond the roots of their inner souls. The name derives not from any kind of ancient civilization, but rather a neologism defined as the imagined view outside one’s field of vision. The band—currently a trio of Tsutomu Sonoda , Ryota Takano , and Shoei Ikeda —finds sanctuary at the Ace General Store, a beachy vintage shop and salon-like space just hidden from sight from the bustling, touristy riverside Subana Street. Between discussions on music and art, curating the vinyl section and manning the register, and chatting up with locals young and old, the members find time to jam and record their spontaneous ideas in the studio tucked away in the back. It’s in this unlikely setting where Maya Ongaku finds its origins, the culmination of what Sonoda describes as 自然発生 ( shizen hassei ), meaning spontaneous generation, or the supposed production of living organisms from non-living matter. ‘Approach to Anima’ , the group’s debut album, to be released on Guruguru Brain next month, finds Maya Ongaku building a foundational groove while tapping into their innermost psyche. Sonoda’s malleable guitar and vocals, Takano’s sinuous bass lines, Ikeda’s floating woodwinds, and a sprinkling of delicate percussion—all coalesce into an aural experience that’s assertive yet abstract, calm but unsettling. The slow building, sax-laden “Approach” serves as an introduction to Maya Ongaku’s world, while the appropriately-named “Water Dream” floats its way toward the gentle finale of “Pillow Song.” It’s a concise distillation of their many interests and influences, from Neo-Dada and Fluxus, to where contemporary art intersects with the development of modern recording technology in the ‘60s and ‘70s.
Now the band have shared a first look at their debut album with single “Nuska” . Speaking on the inspiration for the track, vocalis Tsutomu Sonoda comments: “When I wrote this song, the scene I had in mind was a forest covered in thick fog. I find myself there, my vision obscured by fog. As I stand there, stunned, I hear a sound from far away. This sound is the same as the one mentioned in ‘Description of a Certain Sound’, a strange sound with visual information. We continued through the forest in search of the source of the sound. The only thing we know is that the sender is a supernatural being. The sound is inspired by a sound the band actually heard during a trip to the forests of Hakone, in the western part of Kanagawa Prefecture. It is a very deep and heavy sound, different from the sound of the earth. It reached us from as far away as possible. We called the sound ‘Echo of the Earth’. The rhythm that comes from afar at the beginning of ‘Approach’ is an imitation of that sound.
The title of the album, Approach to Anima, refers to the source of this ‘echo of the earth’ as ‘anima’ and is a journey in search of it.”
The new composition immediately entices the audience to hook on the clarity of the atmosphere. The bed of lush textures and intricate noodles creates the most illustrious setting. This landscape oozes such a unique charm, it reflects this compassionate warmth from the tonality, the percussive additions, and the rhythmic pulsations assist with defining the themes throughout the journey.
As the title suggests, ‘ Approach to Anima’ is not intended to be a terminus; it’s merely the beginning of an exploration. The three childhood friends that comprise Maya Ongaku are always looking beyond the confines of the idyllic but rapidly gentrifying enclave of their beloved Enoshima. Feeding off the energy that still radiates from the triumphant, decade-long journey of their label bosses’ band Kikagaku Moyo , who Maya Ongaku supported at their final show in Tokyo last year, they hope to go wherever inspiration takes them, to anywhere around the globe where their music can find a home. Ultimately, Maya Ongaku’s uninhibited world-building will make it possible for us to see the unseen, expand the possibilities of the naked eye—all through the unbridled vibrancy of their music.
‘Approach to Anima’ track list: 1. Approach 2. Nuska 3. Description Of A Certain Sound 4. Melting 5. Something In The Morning Rain 6. Rakusui 7. Water Dream 8. Pillow Song

Maya Ongaku
Listening to musician collective Maya Ongaku ’s ‘Something In Morning Rain’, off their 2023 debut ‘Approach to Anima’, the listener is immediately transported, without knowing, to where the band came to be - a calming, seaside hiding place away from the everyday bustle. Currently a trio consisting of Tsutomu Sonoda, Ryota Takano, and Shoei Ikeda, the group found solace at a beach spot hidden from the increasingly gentrified Subana Street, an hour away from Tokyo. On their first record, released with the seal of Kikagaku Moyo label Guruguru Brain, the three childhood best friends lay the foundations to start their abstract explorations.

Maya Ongaku: Approach To Anima [Album Review]
Christopher Anthony | June 9, 2023 June 9, 2023 | Reviews
Maya Ongaku Approach To Anima Guruguru Brain [2023]
Maya Ongaku is a trio hailing from the seaside communities surrounding Enoshima, a small island located 50 km southwest of Tokyo, Japan. The group earned a bunch of early fans as they were an opener for label mate Kikagaku Moyo’s final tour. Approach To Anima is their debut album, and its earthy psychedelia transcends their roots, delving deep into your inner soul. The album takes listeners on a fantastic dreamy and atmospheric journey. It has a minimalistic sound yet is rich, with certain areas where the instrumentation feels sparse but allows the raw emotion and vulnerability of Maya Ongaku to shine through.
Notable songs include the hauntingly beautiful “Water Dreams,” which stretches over 11 minutes and features the sound of a fresh stream trickling in the background. The effect is completely hypnotic as Tsutomu Sonoda’s vocals float by and a jazzy saxophone plays off in the distance. Another standout track is “Nuska,” where Sonoda’s peaceful vocals support an enchanting melody while the group blends electric, acoustic, and bass guitars, with a bug shaker keeping a gentle beat. The masterfulness of their playing elevates each track that Maya Ongaku tackles, allowing each instrument to have its moment in these intimate compositions.
Overall, this album is a must-listen for fans of experimental and psych-folk music. Approach To Anima showcases Maya Ongaku’s talent for creating captivating sonic landscapes, drawing listeners into a small and quiet realm of exploration and introspection. The production is pristine, allowing the intricate instrumentation and textures to shine through while maintaining a sense of depth and spaciousness. It is an album that rewards repeated listens, as new layers and details reveal themselves with each encounter.

Maya Ongaku and Mong Tong combine forces for joint European tour
Maya Ongaku (top) and Mong Tong (bottom) © Guruguru Brain
Recently, Maya Ongaku (stylised as maya ongaku) released their very first album filled with psych-folk, Approach to Anima , and next November, the band will tour Europe for the first time and will do so together with Taiwanese psychedelic sibling duo MongTong, who has also just released a new album through the label Guruguru Brain, which is run by the musicians of the now inactive band Kikagaku Moyo. The European tour consists of 13 shows in six countries.
Maya Ongaku is a collective of local musicians from the coastal communities around Enoshima. The origin of the band, currently a trio consisting of Tsutomu Sonoda, Ryota Takano and Shoei Ikeda, can be found in a vintage shop called Ace General Store, where between chats, putting together the vinyl section and manning the cash register, the musicians also find time to jam sessions and record music in the studio that can also be found there.
Behind Mong Tong are two brothers who, after having completed their studies, went on a quest to learn more about the obsession they share: Taiwanese occult-inspired art and vintage superstitious imagery and turning this into music. To make this music, they use psychedelic sound gamelan music, phin guitar, tabla drums, and Taiwan sisomi.

Lineup Revealed for First Summer Slaughter Tour in Five Years
The Summer Slaughter tour is officially back, announcing a 21-date tour featuring co-headliners Veil of Maya and Brand of Sacrifice hitting the road in July.
This marks the first run of Summer Slaughter since going on hiatus four years ago. Prior to that, the annual tour had emerged as one of the top showcases for heavy music bands. Rumors of a return started circulating in March with the tour's social media accounts teasing a forthcoming announcement.
In addition to Veil of Maya and Brand of Sacrifice, Gideon, Left to Suffer, Ten56, Tallah, Cabal and Brat will all spend time playing dates on the tour, with one additional band yet to be named. Interestingly enough, there are still two "to be announced" shows in the midst of the itinerary which could tie to the still unnamed band's participation.
Brand of Sacrifice frontman Kyle Anderson says, "We’re so excited to introduce the new age of Summer Slaughter this year with Veil of Maya and this truly awesome lineup of bands! Back in 2019 we were the first band on the bill, so it’s a bit surreal to be here at the top, bringing in the new era of the tour with our first ever full headline set."
Veil of Maya guitarist Marc Okubo adds, "It’s an absolute honor to be back on the Summer Slaughter tour. This tour has been responsible for some of my favorite memories of playing music and some of my greatest friendships. This year’s lineup is amazing and I can’t wait to share the stage with these incredible bands."
READ MORE: How Alt-Dance Music Inspired Veil of May's New Sound
Ash Avildsen, the head of Sumerian Records and creator of the Summer Slaughter tour, added, “This tour has been crucial year after year for breaking new artists as well as elevating the headline status of established acts. I’m thrilled to be able to bring it back with such a youthful lineup, grateful for all the fans who have stuck by the brand and excited for the new generation to experience the tour for the first time.”
The tour gets underway July 12 in Brooklyn, New York, crossing the country before heading back east for a tour finale Aug. 10 in Reading, Pennsylvania. All dates, cities and venues can be viewed below.
Tickets for Summer Slaughter's return trek will go on sale at 10AM local time this Friday (April 26) at the Summer Slaughter website .

Veil of Maya and Brand of Sacrifice to Co-Headline First “Summer Slaughter Tour” in Five Years
The 2024 edition of the extreme-metal outing also features Gideon, Left to Suffer, Ten56, Tallah, and more
The long-running “Summer Slaughter Tour” is back for the first time in five years, with Veil of Maya and Brand of Sacrifice as co-headliners. Gideon, Left to Suffer, Ten56, Tallah, Cabal, and Brat are also on the bill of the 2024 edition of the extreme-metal package trek.
The outing kicks off July 12th in Brooklyn, New York, and runs through an August 10th show in Reading, Pennsylvania, making stops in such cities as Dallas, Phoenix, Los Angeles, and Chicago along the way.

Tickets for the 2024 run go on sale Friday at 10 a.m. local time via Ticketmaster and the Summer Slaughter website . Fans can also check for deals or pick up tickets to sold-out shows via StubHub , where your purchase is 100% guaranteed through StubHub’s Fan Protect program.
The “Summer Slaughter Tour” was last staged in 2019, but has been hiatus since the pandemic put a pause on the annual outing, which began in 2007.
“It’s an absolute honor to be back on the ‘Summer Slaughter Tour,'” stated Veil of Maya guitarist Marc Okubo. “This tour has been responsible for some of my favorite memories of playing music and some of my greatest friendships. This year’s lineup is amazing and I can’t wait to share the stage with these incredible bands.”
Brand of Sacrifice singer Kyle Anderson added, “We’re so excited to introduce the new age of ‘Summer Slaughter’ this year with Veil of Maya and this truly awesome lineup of bands! Back in 2019 we were the first band on the bill, so it’s a bit surreal to be here at the top, bringing in the new era of the tour with our first ever full headline set.”
“The Summer Slaughter Tour” has long served as a showcase for extreme metal acts, with past headliners including Necrophagist, The Black Dahlia Murder, Suicide Silence, Cannibal Corpse, and more.
Tour creator Ash Avildsen, whose also the CEO of Sumerian Records, stated, “This tour has been crucial year after year for breaking new artists as well as elevating the headline status of established acts. I’m thrilled to be able to bring it back with such a youthful lineup, grateful for all the fans who have stuck by the brand and excited for the new generation to experience the tour for the first time.”
Meanwhile, Veil of Maya are currently supporting Nothing More and Wage War on a spring US tour . Tickets for that outing are available here .
